94 points Wine Spectator: "Plum, cedar and leather aromas follow through to a full-bodied palate, with a lovely density of ripe fruit and a soft, velvety textured finish. Ripe and beautiful. An opulent wine that opens on the palate. This is the best ever from this estate. Best after 2011." (Web only, 2009) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate has 2004 as the highest rated Tuscan vintage in the last 25 years, and the Wine Spectator says "2004 Brunello di Montalcino - a classic vintage, wonderfully perfumed and majestically refined." The wine is remarkable for its density, richness and concentration, all of which have been achieved while maintaining clarity and freshness. The French oak is beautifully integrated in this sumptuous, generous Brunello. Suggestions of flowers and spices add notes of brightness on the finish. The Brunello spent a whopping 40 months in 25-hectoliter medium-sized casks prior to being bottled. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2019." (06/09) ... Read More »

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Talenti’s 2004 Brunello di Montalcino is one of the more intensely fragrant wines in this vintage. Sweet layers of perfumed fruit flow effortlessly onto the palate, framed by silky tannins that give the wine its sense of balance and poise. This is a deceptively medium-bodied wine, yet it packs plenty of punch, not to mention tons of complexity. This pleasing, beautifully balanced Brunello is drinking well today and should continue to offer plenty of pleasure over the next decade and a half. Talenti and consulting... Read More »

90 points Wine Enthusiast "Zonchera is Ceretto’s more affordable base Barolo and it offers an excellent taste profile for those who are new to Nebbiolo. The wine opens with a dark, garnet-brown hue and segues to aromas of ripe berry, apple skin, vanilla, licorice and ginger. It’s a fruit-forward wine with tight tannins and a polished mouthfeel. It’s ready to drink now with fondue or grilled meat. - M.L. It reveals a powerful, brooding expression of scorched earth, tobacco, dark fruit and toasted oak. I first fell in love with Salice Salentino as a twenty-two-year old, living in San Francisco with way too many roommates and not near enough cash. I bought mine from a grocery store whenever I could find it. It was not from Rivera, I can't exactly remember the name (that's how old I am now), but like this 2004, it was negro-amaro it all its tannic and food friendly glory. It tasted great with pizza, pasta in red sauce, grilled veggie burgers, all those foods I ate when I was broke. The Rivera Salice Salentino is similarly endowed with acid and tannin, an... 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Brigaldara's 2004 Amarone della Valpolicella Case Vecie is a very serious wine. It reveals a richer and riper personality than the Amarone, with superb volume in its dark blueberries, blackberries, spices and herbs. The full-bodied expression of fruit hides considerable structure that lurks beneath. Lingering notes of sweetness round out the long finish. Although the 2004 shows more clarity and precision than the 2003, I would have a hard time choosing between them. This is high-class Amarone all the way. Anticip... Read More »

Sicily's most elegant wines come from this small producer located in the hills around Messina. The winemaking philosophy under Salvatore Geraci is simple: make two wines with the same indigenous grapes but with different selections. His top wine is the Faro. Faro (which means lighthouse) is a little DOC, almost the smallest in Italy. With just above 6 hectares (15 acres) in the DOC area, the production is clearly tiny. Sicily's increasing focus on modern production techniques and international varieties has had some great success, as at the Planeta estat... Read More »
