2007 Lanari Rosso Conero $21.99
A second label of Valle dell'Acate's, the Case Ibidini range (pronounced ‘bidini) consists of varietally labeled wines from the estate intended for more casual consumption. The local name of the area where the estate is situated, Bidini, is drawn from the ancient root Bidis. This in turn referred to the name of a group of early Hellenic settlers who populated the area nearly 20 centuries ago. These wines provide a purity and authenticity reflective of the philosophy of the estate, all at an affordable price. Made from 100% Nero d'Avola grapes grown in me... Read More »

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The just-bottled 2007 Passopisciaro is a weightless yet powerful wine redolent of sweet candied cherries, flowers, herbs and minerals. The wine reveals lovely density and purity, even if a few days of rain towards the end of the growing season in November robbed it of the intensity that informs the very finest vintages. Still, there is gorgeous purity to the fruit that insures this will be fascinating wine to follow over the coming years. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2021. Andrea Franchetti wasn’t content to just m... In the most outstanding vintage years, Sella & Mosca produces a Riserva version of its Cannonau, made from grapes picked in selected portions of its Cannonau vineyards. Aged three years in oak prior to release, this aristocratic red will sustain a decade or more of aging. It offers a mesmerizing scent that is redolent with violets. On the palate this rustic red is abundantly fruity (think heirloom plums), assertive and intense, with a sustained finish that calls out for lamb seasoned with rosemary!

There is nothing musty or old fashioned about this straight forward red, with fresh "modern" styling in its rich dark fruit and sweet tannins. Made entirely of the Montepulciano grape from the region of Abruzzo, this will work well with pizza/pasta or just as an all-around excellent Tuesday night quaffer!

Ruby red with purple hues. On the nose, it is fresh, with aromas of currant, strawberry and raspberry. On the palate the wine is fresh and fruity, well balanced and smooth. Fermented in stainless steel, this is a great all-around red that goes with what you're eating!

90 points Robert Parker: "The 2005 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is a relatively straightforward wine but I loved it for its superb balance and harmony. Sweet red cherries, herbs, leather, spices and earthiness are buffered by finessed tannins as this soft-textured wine opens in the glass. This is a great introduction to Amarone. Curiously, the 2005 comes across as more advanced than the 2004, and I would choose to drink it on the young side. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2015." (10/08) According to Wine Spectator: "Displays aromas and flavors of rai... Read More »

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Brigaldara's 2004 Amarone della Valpolicella Case Vecie is a very serious wine. It reveals a richer and riper personality than the Amarone, with superb volume in its dark blueberries, blackberries, spices and herbs. The full-bodied expression of fruit hides considerable structure that lurks beneath. Lingering notes of sweetness round out the long finish. Although the 2004 shows more clarity and precision than the 2003, I would have a hard time choosing between them. This is high-class Amarone all the way. Anticip... Read More »

3 Glasses Gambero Rosso! According to the Wine Spectator: "There's ripe currant and a hint of vanilla on the nose and palate. Full-bodied, with unobtrusive, fruit-coated tannins and a dense, balanced and lingering finish. Shows depth. Delicious. Drink now. 500 cases made." 89 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Nero d’Avola Deliella from Principi di Buttera is a plump, juicy wine packed with varietal red fruits, mint, sweet toasted oak and flowers. This plump, juicy wine reveals tons of length in a polished, contemporary style, with sweet n... Read More »

Club Price: $16.99And you thought Malvasia was white, right? It turns out, not always. This is made from the obscure Malvasia di Schierano, and it makes a slightly effervescent, extremely aromatic sweet red wine with low alcohol (5.5%). Gilli's version shows off an unusual marriage of freshness, weight, and aromatic complexity. Wild red berry fruit is gloriously evident on the nose, along with fascinating hints of blossoms, particularly wisteria and iris. Served will chilled, it is ideal with any sweet or dessert as well as with summer's finest fruit!

A superb blend of hand harvested Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio from the northern slope of Mt.Etna. Elegant, bracing, supple and mineral laden this wine stretches the boundaries for rose'. A beautiful color and a truly complex wine, the perfect accompaniment for pasta, fish or grilled chicken.

The fruit for Orbello comes from old-vine Barbera and Cabernet vineyards that date back to the 60s, to which are added young-vine Nebbiolo and Vespolina. In our judgement this is an extraordinary everyday wine, sold for the price of a normal Barbera or Dolcetto, with which it shares immediate drinkability but compared to which it offers more complexity and broader aromatic qualities. You will find here the same mineral and spice elements found in the more prestigious Lessona and Bramaterra, but in a fresher, more forward interpretation. 50% Barbera, 25% ... Read More »

La Casaccia is an old winery with historic cellars carved out of the solid rock beneath the winery. It was taken over recently by Giovanni Rava and his wife Elena. Their wines are carefully made and very expressive of their variety and 'territorio'. None of the wines I import from them are aged in wood, which means that the flavors from the vineyard are expressed in the bottle; they are direct, fresh and distinctive. Grignolino is a very distinctive grape variety native to Piedmont. It combines pale, Pinot-like color with mouthfilling grip and strawberry... Read More »

90 points Wine Spectator: "There's pleasant stewed plum, blackberry and spicy vanilla character on the nose and palate. Full-bodied, with a compact and firm yet silky mouthfeel. A little in reserve now. Needs bottle age to offer more on the palate. Best after 2009. 700 cases made." (08/08)

Deep ruby in color with a bright and broad nose, this wine shows aromas of ripe strawberry, cassis, cocoa, violets, on a mineral base with a typical Aglianico "textured" tannin structure framing a medium-bodied wine delivering prominent flavors of black cherry and cracked black pepper. The wine finishes warm, the tannins are now more noticeable and they add to the pleasant experience.

this wine is 100% Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and a small marvel of class and power, especially when the vintage is taken into account. There is wonderful richness of fruit, which melds beautifully with the aristocratic oak, giving spicy scents which come through on the palate, too, right to tis final liquorice note.Dark-colored ruby with concentrated aromas of blackberries, dark coco powder and stony minerals. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a fresh finish. Three Stars ***

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The estate’s 2005 Grifola is 100% Montepulciano made from lower yields than the Rosso and aged 16 months in French oak. It is a deep, rich wine with a plush core of sweet, dark fruit that gradually emerges as the wine sits in the glass. This elegant, full-bodied red offers notable elegance and balance, but it needs some air before it shows its true potential. It is an impressive effort from this young property. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2017." (02/08)

Club Price: $23.99What a delicious red wine. "...soft tannins and berryish flavors are kicked up with a spicy note of cinnamon and dried cherry...distinctive savor and bright acidity" as David Lynch says of Piedirosso in his excellent Vino Italiano. This is a very versatile food wine: serve it with salmon, pork, substantial pasta dishes, and other great everyday dishes.

There was a time when all Sagrantino was sweet. Back then, it was used as a symbol of hospitality, and served at the close of festive meals. Today, a few stalwarts are bringing back the sweet, late-harvest style of Sagrantino, thanks to the increasing popularity of the dry version. Full of flower petal aromatics and notes of freshly roasted coffee, this rare sipper is just the thing to tie up a grand Italian dinner of your own!
