2009 Rocca di Montegrossi Rosato Top Pick!
2009 Rocca di Montegrossi Rosato

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Avocate "Rocca di Montegrossi is one of the leading producers in Chianti Classico. The estate’s Rosato, made from Sangiovese, is one of the finest rosés readers are likely to encounter. The 2009 Rosato is gorgeous for its rich fabric of fruit and superb sense of harmony, qualities that accompany the wine through to the soft, enveloping finish. So many rosés today seem to be about subtraction, but Rocca di Montegrossi’s Rosato is a wine that can stand on its own, without inviting comparisons to other wines in the estate’s li... 2008 Blason Rosato (Rosé)
2008 Blason Rosato (Rosé)

An unusual blend for this richly fruity pink wine, 70% merlot and 30% franconia, however the taste is anything but bizarre. Strawberries and spice mix with flowers and lots of refreshing acidity, which makes this the rose to wash down cheese-rich foods like ricotto-stuffed ravioli. Minerals and stone fruit make for a fascinating finish on this value-packed rosé.

2008 Vallevò Cerasuolo Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Rosé
2008 Vallevò Cerasuolo Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Rosé

This rosé, typically named 'Cerasuolo,' is a shocking value given the prices of some of the well-known rosés from southern France. (The Montepulciano grapes are crushed, the skins macerage for 12 hours or so, then the wine is vinified off the skins like a white.) Good solid deep pink color; aroma and flavor of strawberry, with some herbal notes; lively and fresh on the palate but flavorful enough to stand up to all sorts of food. Grilled chicken or salmon come to mind.

2009 Sella Coste della Sesia Rosé "Majoli" (Nebbiolo Rosé)
2009 Sella Coste della Sesia Rosé "Majoli" (Nebbiolo Rosé)

The Sella wine estates are one of the oldest active Italian wine producers. The Sella family has produced wine in Lessona from their own vineyards since 1671. The documents from that period are still preserved in the Sella Foundation. Over the next three centuries, the Sella family has kept the estate intact and its cellars still hold old vintages of these wines, including Lessona dating back from as early as 1881. Today the estate still maintains its original artisanal scale and is still devoted to the limited production of high-quality wine. Majoli is... Read More »

2009 Bidoli Fornas Cabernet Franc Rosé

From an estate founded in the 1920s, this is a delicious, full-bodied and very dry rosé, made from 100% Cabernet Franc. Spicy, with an attractive herbaceous quality and pink raspberry fruit, this is delicious with picnic foods like tapenade on French bread, cold cuts and chicken salads.

2009 Collestefano Rosato "Rosa di Elena"
2009 Collestefano Rosato "Rosa di Elena"

Fabio Marchionni took over the family vineyards from his father a few years ago, having just graduated from the new enology school in Ancona and done his apprenticeship in Germany. He keeps yields extremely low, less than forty hectoliters per hectare, and makes wine with painstaking care. You could eat off the floor of the winery. The last vintage was listed in the Gambero Rosso low cost wines of 2010.

2008 La Montagnetta Il Ciaret Freisa Chiaretto
2008 La Montagnetta Il Ciaret Freisa Chiaretto

This is all Freisa grapes, but the juice had only a brief skin contact, which resulted in this light cherry-hued beauty that is all about freshness and spring! The nose hints at cherries and blood oranges while the palate is hugely satisfying with liveliness and unbelievable freshness. A picnic wine like no other!

2009 Contini Nieddera "Valle Tirso" Rosato New!
2009 Contini Nieddera "Valle Tirso" Rosato

This rarely seen pink wine comes from the local Nieddera vine, cultivated in the lower Tirso river Valley since ancient times. It makes a delicate rosé, fresh and invigorating and it draws its characteristic qualities from the favorable environmental conditions and a particular type of vinification with must fermented at a very low temperature. It should be served chilled and is excellent with grilled fish, fish stews, soups, starters and white meat.

2009 Luigi Giusti Lacrima di Morro d'Alba Rosato
2009 Luigi Giusti Lacrima di Morro d'Alba Rosato

The Castelli di Jesi are most famous for the white Verdicchio wines that are produced in the hills around this series of fourteen beautiful hilltop Castles, each surrounded by a town of the same name. While this area produces some notable red wines of the Rosso Piceno appellation, one of these ‘Castle-towns’, Morro d’Alba, earned DOC status in 1985 for their own red wine, the Lacrima di Morro d’Alba. The Lacrima grape is so ancient in the Marche that its origins remain a mystery. Lacrima di Morro d’Alba was nearing extinction in the early eighties, as de... Read More »

2007 Contini "Tonaghe" Cannonau di Sardegna New!
2007 Contini "Tonaghe" Cannonau di Sardegna

Not yet rated, last vintage of this very particular and geeky (also delicious) red got 90 points from Parker's Wine Advocate, which had this to say: "The 2006 Cannonau Tonaghe is a great introduction to one of Sardinia’s most compelling indigenous grapes. This deeply-colored, brilliant red reveals an intriguing array of black cherries, sweet herbs and licorice in a medium-bodied style. The Tonaghe offers tons of complexity and precision, especially at this price point, where it over-delivers on quality and sheer pleasure. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2012.... Read More »

2006 Contini "Inu" Cannonau Riserva New!
2006 Contini "Inu" Cannonau Riserva

Attilio Contini is one of the very best producers of wine in Sicily, and in fact ranks right up there in all of Italy. This is his top Cannonau, a selection of the best grapes from the single vineyard of Ovuddai di Oliena. It was aged for 12 months in small and medium aok casks, and a further 8 months in bottle. If you are a fan of game and slightly stinky cheeses, you will want to give this savory and rustic red a try.
