An unusual blend for this richly fruity pink wine, 70% merlot and 30% franconia, however the taste is anything but bizarre. Strawberries and spice mix with flowers and lots of refreshing acidity, which makes this the rose to wash down cheese-rich foods like ricotto-stuffed ravioli. Minerals and stone fruit make for a fascinating finish on this value-packed rosé.

This rosé, typically named 'Cerasuolo,' is a shocking value given the prices of some of the well-known rosés from southern France. (The Montepulciano grapes are crushed, the skins macerage for 12 hours or so, then the wine is vinified off the skins like a white.) Good solid deep pink color; aroma and flavor of strawberry, with some herbal notes; lively and fresh on the palate but flavorful enough to stand up to all sorts of food. From an estate founded in the 1920s, this is a delicious, full-bodied and very dry rosé, made from 100% Cabernet Franc. Spicy, with an attractive herbaceous quality and pink raspberry fruit, this is delicious with picnic foods like tapenade on French bread, cold cuts and chicken salads.

Fabio Marchionni took over the family vineyards from his father a few years ago, having just graduated from the new enology school in Ancona and done his apprenticeship in Germany. He keeps yields extremely low, less than forty hectoliters per hectare, and makes wine with painstaking care. You could eat off the floor of the winery. The last vintage was listed in the Gambero Rosso low cost wines of 2010.

This is all Freisa grapes, but the juice had only a brief skin contact, which resulted in this light cherry-hued beauty that is all about freshness and spring! The nose hints at cherries and blood oranges while the palate is hugely satisfying with liveliness and unbelievable freshness. A picnic wine like no other!

This rarely seen pink wine comes from the local Nieddera vine, cultivated in the lower Tirso river Valley since ancient times. It makes a delicate rosé, fresh and invigorating and it draws its characteristic qualities from the favorable environmental conditions and a particular type of vinification with must fermented at a very low temperature. It should be served chilled and is excellent with grilled fish, fish stews, soups, starters and white meat.

Attilio Contini is one of the very best producers of wine in Sicily, and in fact ranks right up there in all of Italy. This is his top Cannonau, a selection of the best grapes from the single vineyard of Ovuddai di Oliena. It was aged for 12 months in small and medium aok casks, and a further 8 months in bottle. If you are a fan of game and slightly stinky cheeses, you will want to give this savory and rustic red a try.
