92 points Wine Enthusiast "Inspired by the Bordeaux tradition and made from a blend of Cabs Sauvignon and Franc, Burdese is a rich and perfumed wine with penetrating notes of blackberry, currants, tobacco and exotic spice. It is full bodied and concentrated without being overextracted thanks to its vibrant red fruit flavors, silky tannins and long finish." (02/08) 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar "Inky, saturated red. Initially tight nose opens slowly to reveal cassis, cedar, sweet spices and minerals. Rich, uncommonly deep blackcurr... Read More »

A real non-aged Super Tuscan for not much more than $10! Ample, multilayered, with a very unusual fruit component, and a wine that is generously inviting to taste. The palate is soft and enveloping, full of cherry fruit and an earthy-woodsy component with a long, intriguing aftertaste. Sangiovese (40%), Ciliegiolo (20%), Merlot (20%) and Cabernet (20%).

An Editors' Choice, Wine Enthusiast: " Very characteristic of the variety, with perfumes of white flower, citrus, lemon soda and drying mineral tones. The wine offers intensity and precision with focused attention on acidity and citric freshness. Try with fried wontons or eggrolls. (07/09)

This Rosso di Montalcino (100% Sangiovese) is similar in nature and character to Brunello, at a fraction of the price. It possesses a deep ruby red color, and a soft richness that balances its fresh bouquet. It spends its first year maturing in oak, lending it some complexity for further aging. Once bottled it will comfortably mature over the next three to five years, growing still finer and more elegant. Pair with dishes such as pasta al ragu, fowl, truffles, and all meat courses.

3 Glasses Gambero Rosso! According to the Wine Spectator: "There's ripe currant and a hint of vanilla on the nose and palate. Full-bodied, with unobtrusive, fruit-coated tannins and a dense, balanced and lingering finish. Shows depth. Delicious. Drink now. 500 cases made." 89 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Nero d’Avola Deliella from Principi di Buttera is a plump, juicy wine packed with varietal red fruits, mint, sweet toasted oak and flowers. This plump, juicy wine reveals tons of length in a polished, contemporary style, with sweet n... Read More »

Club Price: $24.9992 points Wine Spectator: "Solid and powerful CC, offering loads of black fruit, gamy and vanilla character. Full-bodied, with well-integrated tannins and a long, balanced, dark chocolate-tinged finish. Lots of toasted oak and ripe fruit. Still needs to come together, yet such potential. Best after 2003." (10/02) K&L's notes - Giorgio Primo comes from winemaker Giampaolo Motta, The King Of Chianti, as he is known. Motta is a world-class winemaker who was inspired by the great wines of Bordeaux. According to Lynne Char Bennett in the San Francisco Chronicle: "Frizzante rather than spumante, this unusual Prosecco is a light pink-colored wine. It is bottled with a cork and string - no cage or foil. The nose has subtle berryish tones underscored with light peach and blossoms; then gently tart flavors and a long, pleasant finish. It can definitely take you to lox-and-bagel territory without breaking the bank. A blend of 75 percent Pinot Bianco, 15 Prosecco and 10 Pinot Nero." (Sunday, May 3, 2009)

2 Red Glasses Gambero Rosso. According to the Wine Spectator: "Fresh and lively, with berry and citrus character. Medium- to full-bodied, with fine tannins and a clean finish. Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese. Best after 2009. 790 cases made." (Web only, 2007) 60% cabernet sauvignon and 40% sangiovese. Italian Buyer Greg St. Clair says: "This is a powerful, rich and juicy wine. This isn't sweet Napa cab, it's dense and focused with layers of complexity, earth, sky, soil and grape-a symphony of masculinity. The sangiovese is a subtle overlay, a titanium... Read More »

Valentino Sciotti and Camillo de Iulis are not unlike some of their young Californian counterparts. Not everyone is blessed with an inheritance of acres of vineyards and a winery that your great-great-grandfather built and is paid for! They are negociants who work closely with growers in several regions looking to produce wines of character, from vineyards that aren’t tied to any one winery. They can offer more for the grapes because they have little overhead, they rent space as they need it, and because they are getting paid more the growers are more wi... Read More »

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate "At the risk of sounding like a broken record, the 2003 Camartina is a drop-dead gorgeous effort. Fat, rich and opulent, it will reward consumers with its generous super-ripe fruit, great length and beautiful overall balance. While it doesn’t look to be one of the more long-lived Camartinas, with some air it is drinking beautifully today. It is a very refined effort in this vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2018." (06/07) 92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Aug 07: "Deep ruby. Floral red cherry... Read More »

The F.lli Lombardo company was founded in 1881 when Giuseppe Lombardo Maltese, a man of endless energy and enthusiasm, and a gifted and resourceful shipbuilder, realized that with his sailing ships he could take the wine of his land, Marsala, all over the world. This particular dry Marsala wine makes for a tasty tipple when served alongside many of the holiday season's treats like pannetone and traditional fruitcake. A blend of catarratto and grillo, it is rich and warm with roasted notes and dried fruit flavors. Also very handy to have in the kitchen fo... Read More »

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: 'The single-vineyard 2003 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli, from one of the region's top sites, is fresher and more vibrant than the regular bottling, with superior balance and finesse. It shows lovely plumpness, clarity and depth in its black cherries, oak, spices and tobacco. This medium to full-bodied wine should drink beautifully over the next decade or so. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2018." (04/08) 90 points Wine Spectator: "Displays stewed cherry and mahogany. Full-bodied, with jammy fruit character and a me... Read More »

Giovanni Blason and his consulting enologist Andrea Rossi have turned this 37-acre property into a juggernaut of affordable quality wines. Giovanni and his wife Valentina own this winery in Gradisca d’Inzonzo, 3.75 miles from the Slovenian border and about 20 miles north of Trieste. Franconia is rarely seen in the U.S. (the name of the grape has nothing to do with Franken wines of Germany), and it's a shame. This is a ruby red wine, with a distinctively herbal aroma and flavor, and a velvety mouth feel. Best of all, it is quite low in alcohol, making it ... Read More »

Etna Rosso is made of Nerello Mascalese, with the permitted addition of up to 20% Nerello Cappuccio, of which Ciro Biondi takes full advantage. This shows an almost Burgundian combination of finesse and substance, leaving a wonderful lingering impression on the palate . The enologist here is Salvo Foti, also from Etna, whose respect for the indigenous flavors of the mountain is evident; the wine shows no overt oak, only excellent, clean and balanced winemaking. This wine has far more weight and complexity than you'd expect from the relatively pale color... Read More »

95 points Robert Parker "The 2001 Vin Santo del Chianti Classico is stunning in the way it has acquired tons of complexity over the years while remaining fresh and perfumed. High-toned, balsamic aromatics meld into layers of cherries in liqueur, menthol, fresh mint, spices, sweet herbs and flowers as this remarkable wine opens up in the glass. Despite its size and opulence, the wine has maintained essential inner clarity and precision, qualities that are very hard to come by in this style of Vin Santo. Rocca di Montegrossi's Vin Santo is 95% Malvasia and... Read More »

The name means "hill of the apples." Apple trees were planted at the beginning of the century to stabilize a big land slide still visible today. Light gold with green highlights, explosive nose with elderflowers and hints of sage and mint, white peach and gooseberry. Dry, very balanced, ripe fruit with citrus notes, and a long, deliciously oily finale.

(Web only, 2008) 89 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Jul/Aug 08: "Bright, full red. Red cherry, red berries, licorice and flowers on the slightly liqueur-like nose. Then fresh and scented in the mouth, with rather polite, spicy flavors and a surprisingly juicy quality. A supple midweight that finishes with light, dusty tannins and good persistence."

Marsala may be the best known wine made from Grillo, but that doesn't mean it's the only one. Marco de Bartoli uses the Sicilian varietal as the foundation for his Vecchio Samperi Ventennale, a dessert wine that is comprised of 70% Grillo and 30% Inzolia. This amber-hued dessert wine's allure starts with a nose like ambrosia - dried fruit, savory herbs, almonds and aceto - which carry over to the unctuous palate with waves of acidity. Long on the finish, this beautiful wine should last for 20 to 30 years.

"This is truly a wonderful wine but somewhere between the name and where is Molise? the wine hasn't sold....I feel bad because it is really a great expression of this least known of all Italian regions and Montepulciano! Give away price now!" Greg St.Clair K&L's Italian buyer. This is a wonderfully structured wine, obtained from a careful selection of the best Montelpulciano (100%) grapes from this estate. It offers excellent length and refined tannins, although its personality remains somewhat clenched. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2014. Nino Negri is another of Valtellina’s historic wineries although today it is part of the Gruppo Italiani Vini, which owns properties across the country. The wine producing firm of Michele Chiarlo was founded in 1956 by the sole and present owners, Michele and Giuseppina Chiarlo. Son of over seven generations of esteemed wine growers, Mr. Chiarlo is today one of the most respected producers of the fine wines of Piedmont and a leading figure in its viticultural industry. This brand new wine comes from the realtively new grape variety of Albarossa: a crossing of barbera and nebbiolo. A risk, some might say, but one that has paid off in this remarkable new release. ***3.5 stars "This wine has so much sweet fruit character in the nose you'd think it might be Californian. Although initially that overtly fruity personality dominates, it is gently conjured into something more complex, more balanced, showing more depth and complexity. The delicious fruit that covers the palate is gradually accented by hints of wild cherry, vanilla and layers of spice and a piquant vibrancy that rolls toward a balanced and juicy finish. 1,250 cases produced" Greg St.Clair K&L's Italian Wine Buyer According to the Wine Spectator: "Shows s...
