Another screaming deal from New Zealand! I bought the last 25 cases or so of this delightful elegant Pinot Noir from Wairarapa on the south end of the North island. Bright and earthy, with a long and elegant finish. Marconnets is on the border with Beaune, on the slope above Narbantons. This has a full mid-palate, with lots of fine tannins, and an elegant structure. It was vinified with partial stems, and will age beautifully, or be lovely now with an hour in the decanter. This has lovely fruit, and lots of charm. This is one of the real values in Burgundy today. This appellation is common to a number of villages, all situated in the Côte de Nuits region : Brochon, Fixin, Premeaux-Prissey, Corgoloin, Comblanchien. It is an interesting wine combining the different characteristics of the various "terroirs" : fairly soft and rich wines in the South to more tannic wines with a strong structure in the North. Pinot Noir is the only grape variety used for this appellation.

After a challenging 2007 vintage in the Willamette Valley, the late 2008 harvest was quite welcome, creating a wine that is wonderfully balanced and intense. The '08 vintage comes from Illahe (40%), Mahonia (20%) and Eola Springs (40%) vineyards. This has slightly darker fruit notes than usual, with lots of ripe plum and briar fruits on the nose and secondary aromas of sweet earth and dried savory herbs, all of which continue onto the palate. Enjoyable now with some air, this will be fantastic with a little age too.

A stunning, cherry and cranberry-filled Pinot Noir wrapped up with an earth and spice bow. The fruit comes from Foley's Rancho Santa Rosa, part of the original Spanish Land Grant, and one of Santa Barbara's most historic properties. Planted into a steep hillside in one of the coolest parts of the Santa Ynez Valley, the site is ideal for growing bright, structured Pinot Noir. Aged in 50% new French oak barrels, which smooth the wine's texture and add spicy notes that complement the crisp acidity.

The Wagner clan must have wine in their veins. Belle Glos is the project of Joseph Wagner, son of famed Caymus winemaker Chuck Wagner, devoted entirely to distinctive, single-vineyard pinot noirs. Planted near the corner of Clark Avenue and Telephone Road in the Santa Maria Valley in in 1972. This wine is pure Clark & Telephone - full of the cookie spice, mint, black tea and cranberry aromas and flavors the vineyard is known for. Bright, with firm acidity and fine-grained tannins.
