2007 Au Bon Climat Santa Barbara Pinot Noir Top Pick!
2007 Au Bon Climat Santa Barbara Pinot Noir

Quite possibly our favorite Pinot under $20. This is not a thick syrupy version of Pinot, but if you're a fan of balanced and delicate (and delicious) Pinot Noir we highly recommend grabbing a bottle. It comes from one of the top pinot producers on the Central Coast. Jim Clendenen makes great wine vintage after vintage, using exceptional fruit even in this entry-level beauty. Easy to drink with strawberry and plum notes, good texture, acidity and fruit. Good pinot for $20? Believe it. The Wine Spectator writes: "Floral, perfumed and peppery berry arom... Read More »

93 points and one of the Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2009: "Shows wonderful balance and purity of flavor, depth and complexity built around spicy wild berry, black cherry, mineral, anise and spice. Full-bodied, fresh and lively. The finish sails on. Drink now through 2013. 1900 cases made." (Web only, 2009) The Cuvee de Trois is always a staff favorite at K&L. 2008 Luli Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir

Bacchant Wines, the title of the collaboration between Master Sommelier Sara Floyd and the Pisoni family, bring you this incredibly tasty and wildly affordable Pinot Noir. From fruit sourced through the Pisoni family's deep connections in the Santa Lucia Highlands and made by Jeff Pisoni, the winemaker for Lucia, this is one Pinot this season that can't miss. The densely fruited nose is packed with red cherry and framboise tones, all the while a subtle lace of black pepper runs through the aromatics of the wine. 2008 Redtree California Pinot Noir
2008 Redtree California Pinot Noir

From Wine Spectator: "Offers baked cherry pie, with rhubarb and blueberry, showing a wonderful fruit profile that's spicy, elegant and easy to drink. Great balance. Drink now. 35,000 cases made." (Web only, 2009) When James Laube blogged about Redtree Pinot Noir, we were all left sitting with cartoon-y question marks floating above our heads. Redtree? But for once Wine Spectator actually put a wine on our radar before their score and review made it scarce. Usually it is exactly the opposite - by the time Spectator or Parker or any of the myriad of other... Read More »

2005 Hartford Court "Land's Edge" Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir (Was $50)
2005 Hartford Court "Land's Edge" Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir (Was $50)

96 points Wine Enthusiast: "Most of the grapes came from the Annapolis Vineyard, with some from Seascape. While the vintage was cool, it gave incredibly long hangtime. Dry, crisp and delicate, the wine has a silky voluptuousness that makes it irresistible, with pie-filling cherry and black raspberry flavors finished with Asian spice. New French oak adds toast and vanilla sweetness. It's expensive, but still a bargain." 2006 Chehalem "Stoller Vineyard" Willamette Valley Pinot Noir (Was $45 elsewhere)

92 points from Wine Enthusiast: "The Stoller vineyard bottling is a warm, rich and spicy Pinot Noir, with a sweet black cherry fruit core, concentrated and well-matched to the acids and tannins. A smooth and luscious midpalate continues to add flavors of butterscotch and toast, leading into a long and quite satisfying finish. Could be cellared for 6-8 years, but it’s hard to imagine it will ever taste any better than this." 2007 Undone Pinot Noir
2007 Undone Pinot Noir

Sometimes a great wine pops up when you least expect it. This bottle has a lot to overcome in the US market; the fact that people don't necessarily think of Germany for great value Pinot Noir, the fancy, hip, label depicting a woman's corset being "undone", and the fact that it is $10.99 AND imported. To be honest I had little hope but again here we are... Much like the Bernier Chardonnay we have been selling the heck out of this wine exceeds its humble beginnings. The Undone Pinot Noir is all about fun, easy drinking pleasure. Bottled with a screw c... Read More »

Cremant de Bourgogne Rosé, Perle d'Aurore, Louis Bouillot Top Pick!
Cremant de Bourgogne Rosé, Perle d'Aurore, Louis Bouillot

This delightful Rosé sparkling wine comes from Burgundy. It is made of 80% Pinot Noir, and 20% Gamay Noir. The charming eye of the swan color comes from the addition of Pinot Noir to the wine when the lees are disgorged, following the traditional fermentation in the individual bottle, in the champagne method. On the palate it is very rich and fruity but just off-dry on the finish. The mousse is explosive, with a very creamy palate impression. It shows just a hint of the earthiness of a Pinot Noir from Burgundy. This is charming rosé, subtle and deligh... Read More »

The dark fruit notes repeat on the palate, which is velvety, seductively sweet and gently framed by fine-grained tannins. Lively and precise in the mouth, showing nervy redcurrant and strawberry flavors and a pungent floral quality. Finishes with very good seamless length and a strong echo of sweet red berries." Even better than the 2006! The 2007 Poppy is made from a combination of Arroyo Seco, Santa Lucia Highlands and Monterey County pinot noir, but there were no notable heat spikes to throw off even ripening. This Cazar Pinot comes from the Russian River Valley and was aged for 10 months - half in new 60-gallon French oak barrels and half in smaller French barriques. Lower in alcohol than many Pinots these days, this wine is balanced and full of fresh fruit and complementary spice. 2008 Broadley Willamette Valley Pinot Noir

90 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Broadley’s 2008 Pinot Noir Willamette Valley was bottled in June, 2009. A blend of three vineyards, it is a preview of just how good the 2008 vintage is in Willamette Valley. It offers up the superb perfume characteristic of the vintage; unlike 2007 in which spice notes dominate the aromatics, in 2008 fruit and floral aromas have the upper hand. On the palate it has layered, succulent cherry and raspberry fruit with excellent depth and balancing acidity. It has enough structure to evolve for several years bu... Read More »

2006 Domaine René Leclerc Griottes-Chambertin Grand Cru ($83 elsewhere)
2006 Domaine René Leclerc Griottes-Chambertin Grand Cru ($83 elsewhere)

90-92 points Allen Meadows' Burghound: "Very mild reduction can't begin to suppress the elegant, airy and refined extract of red pinot fruit nose that merges seamlessly into rich and relatively full flavors that possess a supple mid-palate that firms up moderately on the sappy and mouth coating finish. This is pretty rather than truly profound though if it can add a bit more depth with time in bottle, that may change. For the moment however, this appears to possess very good to excellent potential." I didn't find the reductive notes that Burghound notic... Read More »

2007 Sequana "Sarmento" Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir
2007 Sequana "Sarmento" Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir

92 points Wine Spectator: "Deliciously complex, with a rich range of flavors built around loamy currant, blackberry, plum and sassafras. Gets more interesting with every sip. Best from 2010 through 2015." (08/09) And, according to Wine Enthusiast: "Dry, silky and crisp in acidity, this Pinot offers easy flavors of red cherries, cola, licorice, orange zest and cedar, with a vast array of peppery spices. At its best now." (09/09) Winemaker James MacPhail describes the setting for the Sarmento vineyard as "nothing short of spectacular." Located in the Sant... Read More »

2008 Evesham Wood Willamette Valley Pinot Noir
2008 Evesham Wood Willamette Valley Pinot Noir

After a challenging 2007 vintage in the Willamette Valley, the late 2008 harvest was quite welcome, creating a wine that is wonderfully balanced and intense. The '08 vintage comes from Illahe (40%), Mahonia (20%) and Eola Springs (40%) vineyards. This has slightly darker fruit notes than usual, with lots of ripe plum and briar fruits on the nose and secondary aromas of sweet earth and dried savory herbs, all of which continue onto the palate. Enjoyable now with some air, this will be fantastic with a little age too.

2005 Domaine Charles Audoin Marsannay Rouge "Cuvée Marie Ragonneau"
2005 Domaine Charles Audoin Marsannay Rouge "Cuvée Marie Ragonneau"

90 points Wine Spectator: "Intense aromas of mineral, wild berry and black currant mark this firm, tensile red. Its tannins are present and balanced by a sweetness midpalate. Fine, lingering aftertaste." (Bruce Sanderson, Web Only, 03/08) K&L's notes: This charming Pinot Noir comes from the village of Marsannay. It has bright cherry fruit, brambly notes of red and black fruits, and drinks very nicely today, although a few years in the cellar will tame it even more. Charming and bright, with a lovely nose and more structure and complexity than you might ... Read More »

A stunning, cherry and cranberry-filled Pinot Noir wrapped up with an earth and spice bow. The fruit comes from Foley's Rancho Santa Rosa, part of the original Spanish Land Grant, and one of Santa Barbara's most historic properties. Planted into a steep hillside in one of the coolest parts of the Santa Ynez Valley, the site is ideal for growing bright, structured Pinot Noir. Aged in 50% new French oak barrels, which smooth the wine's texture and add spicy notes that complement the crisp acidity.

92 points Wine Spectator: "Smooth and round, with a lovely polished feel to the dark berry, cherry, licorice and spice flavors, flowing easily over finely tuned tannins, persisting expressively. Drink now through 2016." (05/09) 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2006 Evenstad Reserve is a blend of over 70 lots. Medium ruby-colored, it offers notes of cedar, cinnamon, clove, cassis, and raspberry.
