90 points Wine Spectator: "Polished and lively, with rhubarb and pomegranate notes that weave through plum and spice as this heads for the finish. The tannins are well-buffed. Drink now through 2015." 90 points James Halliday: "Lifted, vibrant red and black fruit aromas come through on the palate, and are joined by persistent tannins that just stay within the bounds of balance." (07/08) Wow, this is absolutely delicious Shiraz for a song. The nose is lifted with blueberry and blackberry fruit enhanced with notes of mineral and spice. On the palate, the... Read More »

92 points Wine Spectator: "Velvety, offering a plush mouthful of spicy cherry and red berry flavors, playing against plush tannins and hints of milk chocolate on the long, vivid finish. Syrah. Drink now through 2014." (10/09) 90 points and a Good Value, Connoisseurs' Guide: "This wine's keenly focused blackberry aromas are filled out with quiet but evident spice notes, and its convincing fruit flows from first sniff to aftertaste with nary a letup in sight. Supple, slightly fleshy and full-bodied yet never heavy, it is fairly polished in feel with integ... Read More »

95 points Robert Parker: "Binder's flagship offering, produced from a vineyard planted in on sandy, gravelly, loamy soils, is his Shiraz Hanisch. The 2004 was aged in a combination of French and American oak, more than half of which was new. It boasts a beautiful blue/purple color, great stuffing, and a fabulous perfume of crushed rocks, smoked meats, blackberries, cassis, and flowers. This thick, opulent, powerful Shiraz needs 4-5 years of cellaring, and should drink well for 20-25." (10/06) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Dark and juicy, with a lively fram... Read More »

Elegant, medium-bodied red and dark berry flavors stain the palate, with a dusty mineral quality contributing energy. Sappy dark berry flavors linger on the long, juicy finish. This is already delicious." (Nov/Dec '08) 90 points from Robert Parker: "There are 2,000 cases of the 2006 Syrah Estate, a blend of 85% Syrah and 15% Grenache. 90 points, a Best Value designation and one the Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2009: "Ripe and open-textured, this is impressive for the way it packs in the cherry, blackberry and raspberry flavors and doesn't take the foot off the gas pedal until the mineral-inflected finish has played through. Drink now through 2018. 5,000 cases imported." (09/09)

Described by Robert Parker as Copain's interpretation of a St-Joseph or Crozes-Hermitage, the Saisons des Vins "L'Hiver" is consistently an incredible value-driven syrah that showcases winemaker Wells Guthrie's talent. Guthrie, who spent time working with such famed Rhône producers as Michel Chapoutier and Jean-Louis Chave, deftly incorporates what he learned in France with a deep understanding of California-grown syrah. Like a firecracker on the Fourth of July, the 2006 L'Hiver has a bouquet of smoke, flint and ripe blackberries. On the palate, the blac... Read More »

Voted one of the "Top 100 Best Buys of 2008" by Wine Enthusiast Magazine: "Somehow, this California winery manages to put out the best budget Syrah in all of Washington State. Pure varietal, this excellent bottle brings clean berry fruit, natural acids and moderate tannins into play, with none of the bizarrely sweet vanilla and tobacco flavors that typically show up on Yellowtail wannabes. This wine just wants to be what it is--affordable, juicy and nicely representative of the higher acid, food-ready flavors of Washington state grapes." (12/31/2008) Th... Read More »

93 points from The Wine Enthusiast and number #13 in their Top 100: "There’s no doubt this is done in what some critics might call a fruit-bomb style. But boy is it gorgeously made. The creamy-smooth mouthfeel and lush layers of flavors effortlessly carry palate-saturating notes of licorice and plum. Long on the finish, with a surprising degree of elegance. A blend of various growers’ fruit vinified by winemaker Troy Kalleske. Drink now thru 2015." An untamed animal with minimal intervention (that means no filtering, no fining, and pretty much no hand of the wine maker in evidence whatsoever), this is a naturalist's dream: 100% juicy, soft and drinkable Shiraz in a fruit-forward, jammy and yet balanced style. A fantastic value and a lot of bang for around ten bucks. "Since I became aware of this property last year, I have been extremely impressed with the quality and value they have to offer. (02/09) 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "This is Zaca Mesa's basic Syrah, and it's quite a good wine. This winery is so small they don't even have a website. This Syrah comes from Flocchini Vineyard on Old Lake Lakeville Rd at the south end of Petaluma. This wine really showcases the appellation's cool-climate fruit. Smoked meat and earth aromas carry over to the full but soft and creamy palate. This is a wonderfully nuanced Syrah for the price.

93 points Robert Parker: "Slightly better is the 2006 Syrah Shanel Vineyard. It includes 3% Viognier, but it is less noticeable at this stage. An opaque purple color is followed by enormous quantities of blackberries intermixed with tapenade, acacia flowers, and truffles. Full-bodied, meaty, and dense, it cuts an even broader mouthfeel than its sibling. It, too, can be drunk over the next decade. Situated in a high altitude pocket, the cold winters and long hot days during the ripening period ensures the resultant wines are rich yet refreshing, delicate yet robust. The low rainfall, cool nights and warm days combine with the valley's rich red alluvial soils, slate and limestone to make a truly unique wine style. Jean-Louis Denois is considered by many as a maverick of the Languedoc. This passionate vigneron produces an impressive portfolio of wines from Limoux, considered one of the coolest regions in the Languedoc. The Denois philosophy is simple. To showcase Limoux as an island of freshness in the south of France. Finding the perfect balance between ripeness and acidity here is key, and Denois manages to maintain this across the board.
