91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Inky purple color. Strongly floral nose displays a seductive bouquet of dark berries, lavender, rose and smoky Indian spices. Vibrant blackberry and candied cherry flavors are lifted by zesty minerals, becoming deeper and sweeter with air. The impressively brisk and focused finish features pure berries. Here's another crazy value." (09/08) On the Wine Advocate's list of recommended wine values under $25. Produced from old, ungrafted vines that rise from the beautiful, almost surreal bleached white l... Read More »

The Beaujolais Villages Nouveau is always produced in much smaller quantities than the plain Beaujolais Nouveau, and our staff finds it much the better wine. This is the gold standard in Nouveau, and always popular.

93 points Robert Parker: "The 2007 Côtes de Tablas is a sensational wine as well as a great bargain. The fact that it is finished with a screw cap may give some consumers the wrong impression, but this is a serious, mouthfilling red. A blend of 50% Grenache and the balance equal parts Syrah and Counoise, it exhibits sweet, gamy notes along with plenty of pepper, licorice, roasted herb, blackberry, and cassis characteristics, a velvety, lush texture, a full-bodied richness, beautifully integrated acidity, abundant Provencal typicity, and good minerality f... Wine-growers since the beginning of the 19th century, Louis and Jean Tête's domaine is located a few kilometers from Beaujeu, the historical capital of Beaujolais. Though the family business has grown in the last decade, it remains a very hands-on, family winery, even when it comes to their light and lively Nouveau, which is bottled, like all Tête wines, at the estate. They use the traditional "Pot bottle", which were once wide-spread in Beuajolais, and are made of made of clear glass and a slightly different shape than the modern glass.

This is how Nouveaux is supposed to be, but very very very rarely is! This new wine naturally settled in the cuve as the winter chill circulated through open windows for months, then it was bottled unfined, unfiltered, and unsulfured and shipped by plane in mid-November. The wine was made with natural yeasts only and was not chaptalized. You are getting wine in its most natural state possible. You don’t want to know what most people do to stabilize their Nouveaux. But this domaine doesn't worry, because their wine is drunk up so quickly. Besides, the Dup... Read More »

95 points and #18 on the Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2009: "Elegant, with very fine bubbles and complex spice, coffee, pear and toast aromas and flavors that are poised against lacy acidity and refined structure, letting the flavors sail on and on with finesse. Drink now." (12/09) 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "OK, a slight exaggeration, but the 1999 Brut Extended Tirage is even better. Light gold-colored, this lively, vibrant effort has tons of flavor and exceptional length. Drink it over the next 3 years." (10/09)

90 points and one the Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2009: "There's a sense of elegance to the well-defined, concentrated flavors of dark cherry, blackberry and plum, followed by notes of sage, dark chocolate and tobacco leaf on the long, powerful finish. Drink now." (10/09) According to Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Philippe Bernede’s 2007 Cahors – a 80:20 Malbec:Merlot blend – continues Clos la Coutale’s long-running streak of excellence. Smelling – much as did the 2006 – of ripe mulberries, cassis, cardamom, carob, and black walnut husks, it off... Read More »

95 points from the Wine Spectator: "This haunting wine evokes violet, black currant and slate aromas and flavors, all defined by the taut, racy structure. Light-weight, lean and intense, with a kaleidoscope of flavors on the expansive finish. Tensile. Best from 2014 through 2032. 200 cases made." 90 points from the Wine Enthusiast: "A top-notch value Cabernet with no flaws. The fruit on the nose is pretty and stylish but doesn't force the issue, while the palate is juicy and fresh with flavors of cola, cassis and wild berry. Not a complicated wine, but one that pushes all the right buttons. Ripe and friendly to the last drop. A lot of wine for the money." (8/31/09) While I agree with the critic throwing some love towards the Armador, a Cab that has consistently delivered great value for the money, I do find it to be a bit more seriously structu... 90 points and featured in the "Fifty Super Domestic Wine Values" from Robert Parker: "The 2007 7 Deadly Zins is a knock-out bargain. Aged completely in American oak, it is loaded with berry fruit, pepper, spice, and earth characteristics. By now no one is surprised to see yet another amazing value Argentinean Malbec, but for $6.99 this is just ridiculous. Doña Paula is the largest landowner in the Lujan de Cuyo sub-zone of Mendoza, and they use their immense vineyard holdings to great advantage in crafting what is undoubtedly the best value Malbec around. Soft, juicy, eminently drinkable Malbec, this has loads of cherry and plum fruit as well as a really wonderful texture (especially considering the price), which make this a great wine to buy by the case and have around for summer grilli... A truly elegant Pinot Noir from Australia? Yes, if you know the seamless structure of wines from Western Australia it can be done. Fonty's Pool produces 100% estate grown fruit ranging from sauvignon blanc, chardonnay and the ubiquitous shiraz. It was the pinot that truly stood out with sweet cherry fruit, earthy spice notes and a bright supple finish. This is one of our best under $20 reds. 94 points from Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep ruby. Captivating aromas of red- and blackcurrant, smoked meat, olive and minerals remind me of a serious Cote-Rotie. Rich black raspberry and cassis flavors are complicated by cracked pepper, olive and candied violet, with silky tannins lending support and focus. The floral qualities gain strength on the finish, which is strikingly focused and very long. For this wine's quality, the price is a steal." (May/June 2009)

This is a pure, rich, concentrated Zinfandel to enjoy over the next 5-7 years. The source of the name for this vineyard is amusingly shown on a graphic on the bottle. Due to the steep nature of the vineyard, workers in skirts are apt to "montre cul". The Coenobium is a vino da tavola from the Lazio district (in the area of Vitorchiano about 60 kilometers north of Rome) produced from vineyards organically farmed by the sisters of the Cistercian order. The wine is composed of three grape types: Verdicchio, Grechetto, and Trebbiano Toscano. The vinification is rather straight forward and occurs in stainless steel tanks but, under the guidance of Giampiero Bea, the sisters have begun to leave the juice in contact with the skins for a more sustained period, and the results are most impressive indeed!
