2002 Bruno Michel Cuvee Millesimee
2002 Bruno Michel Cuvee Millesimee

This fantastic Champagne comes from the villages of Pierry and Moussy in the sud-Epernay sub region of Champagne. Bruno Michel has been organic since 1999 and 5 of his 37.5 acres are farmed biodynamically. This vintage Brut is 80% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Meunier, and it offers stupendous balance between simple enjoyment/drinkability and more intellectual geeked out notes of wet stone and austere minerality.

2002 Veuve Clicquot Brut Rosé
2002 Veuve Clicquot Brut Rosé

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "A full, ripe creamy wine with a fine balance between fresh red berries and pink grapefruit crispness. There is spice, followed by a mouthful of complex berries, red plums and a firm texture. This is already delicious, but could certainly age over several years." (12/1/2008) Not exactly an unknown name in Champagne, right? You might assume that due to Clicquot's size, its wines are generic, safe and designed for the masses. But not this sexy sparkler, not by a long shot. First, beginning with the lovely smoked salmon color, ri... Read More »

2002 Veuve Clicquot Gold Label Reserve
2002 Veuve Clicquot Gold Label Reserve

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "A wine that shows an airy character. It is very open and fresh, the white fruits floating over a creamy texture and made crisp by grapefruit skin and bitter orange flavors. But it is just beginning to develop its potential, and the wine will likely fill out, as secondary flavors come through over the next 5-6 years." (12/1/2008) Fruity and rich, this new release offers stone fruit (peach and apricot) aromatics with toasty notes of brioche and nuts. On the palate these characters are repeated along with baking spice, nice Pino... Read More »

1999 Haut-Bailly, Pessac Léognan
1999 Haut-Bailly, Pessac Léognan

According to Robert Parker: "This wine is light to medium-bodied, with sweet currant and smoke-infused flavors and some oak in the background, but plenty of red fruits, vanilla, and dried herbs. This is a soft, well-balanced wine to drink now and over the next 12-15 years." (04/02) K&L's notes - Very aromatic, Graves-style wine with earthy and mineral hints on the nose. Crushed berries on the nose and palate. This is a very elegant yet powerful wine, and quite long on the palate with good grip. Delicious exotic and velvety fruit. 65% cabernet sauvignon,... 1999 Labegorce, Margaux (1.5L)
1999 Labegorce, Margaux (1.5L)

According to Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, May/June 00: "Bright medium ruby. Lively aromas of black raspberry, bitter chocolate and mint. Good texture and restrained sweetness; dark berry flavors are quite youthfully unevolved. Solidly structured wine, finishing with firm but fine tannins and very good length." According to Wine Spectator: "Aromas of berries, chocolate and hints of spices. Medium- to full-bodied, with fine tannins and a light, fresh, fruity aftertaste. Delicious red." 2001 Louise Brison Cuvée Germain Brulez Brut 1.5L (was $90.)
2001 Louise Brison Cuvée Germain Brulez Brut 1.5L (was $90.)

Mr. Brulez sells two-thirds of his grapes, and keeps the best third to make only vintage Champagne. He is the chairman of the Dijon University Alumni Association, and looks more to Burgundy than to Reims for the inspiration for his wines. There is not much more festive than a magnum of Vintage Champagne. The fact that this is meticulously crafted, and heavily discounted, makes it a particularly fun addition on your holiday gatherings!

1990 Quinta do Vesuvio (Damaged capsules, Tissue staines labels) (Was $69.95)

93 points Robert Parker: "This single Quinta port possesses an opaque black/purple color, and a sweet, rich nose with a whiff of licorice and powerfully ripe fruit. In the mouth, it is full-bodied, with superb concentration, as well as a rich, opulent, deep finish. Drinkable now, it has at least 20 years of evolution. It is just as spectacular as any vintage port I tasted from 1983 or 1985." (08/92)

2002 Berthet-Bondet Château-Chalon (620ml)
2002 Berthet-Bondet Château-Chalon (620ml)

Made strictly in accordance with tradition from the Savagnin grape, this totally unique white (the ideal gift for the geekiest wino on your list!) is kept in the barrel for 6 years under its protective yeast layer. It fully expresses the character and subtlety of this grand "terroir". Those tasting this wine are often surprised by its long lasting finish, a taste somewhat similar to Fino sherry, as well as the richness of its aroma. Depending on the vintage, this can range from vegetal (straw, tobacco), to ripe fruits (apples), sharp fruits (grapefruits)... Read More »

1989 Domaine Joseph Matrot Volnay 1er Cru Santenots (was $80.)

Lovely and unabashedly light to medium bodied, this is Pinot for the true Pinot lover, not the sort that thinks Pinot should be pitch black in color and taste like Syrah! Warm earth and mature red cherry aromas lead to a hint of truffle and a very evolved palate impression. Classic and still relatively high toned. Ready to go now as a match for strong cheeses.

2002 Taittinger Brut Champagne
2002 Taittinger Brut Champagne

91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Nov/Dec 08: "Bright gold with a fine bead. Smoky, powerfully scented bouquet displays lemon custard, buttery brioche and dried flowers. A spicy, focused midweight, offering juicy pear and mineral flavors and a late note of bitter lemon zest. Gains power with air and finishes with lingering pear and mineral notes. This is complex enough to drink now." 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2002 Millesime Brut is a beautiful, poised wine that artfully balances fruit and structure. The fruit reve... 2000 Bruno Michel Cuvee Clement Blanc de Noir Brut
2000 Bruno Michel Cuvee Clement Blanc de Noir Brut

This spectacular Champagne is made from one plot, the "9 Arpents" in the village of Moussy. This vineyard is all Meunier, and the vines are 70 years old and pre-date the arrival of cloned vines in Champagne. This wine was fermented in old oak, and aged for a year in oak before being bottled. It has a deep straw color that is almost gold and a nose of morel mushrooms in cream and moist forest floor. The Champagne is both broad on the palate and long finishing, a combination that is hard to find. It also has a surprising chalky minerality to offset the hug... Read More »

2001 Domaine de la Tournelle "Vin Jaune" Arbois
2001 Domaine de la Tournelle "Vin Jaune" Arbois

Vin Jaune is a wine like no other. Produced in only exceptional vintages when the Indian summer enables Savagnin to develop optimum ripeness, the wine then undergoes a most unique elevage: once fermented it must age in old oak barrels for at least 6 years without any topping up to replace the portion of wine that evaporates. A thin layer of yeast, or voile, forms on the wines surface much like a flor, used in the makimg of fino sherries. The wine, which displays an unbelievable degree of richness and complexity is balanced by a fine acidity which enable ... Read More »

Impressively, all this creaminess is well balanced by full, dry fruits, flavors of pear and fresh bread and finished with crisp apples. This is not a wine for aging, but it is ready to go with many meals now." (12/1/2008) 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2003 Brut offers tons of harmony in a generous, inviting style. 1979 Chalone Estate Pinot Noir (some torn labels)

Can a California Pinot Noir last well into its third decade? If any a wine could do it from the Golden State, our money would be on Chalone! Perched high on the western slopes of the remote Gavilan Mountain Range, 1,800 feet above California's Salinas Valley, Chalone Vineyard represents a singular convergence of terroir and winemaking. It's a site that was deemed unique enough to have its very own AVA! Chalone Pinot Noir, produced in true Burgundian fashion, shows uncommon power, depth and complexity. Not to mention its ability to age.

This rich, medium to full-bodied wine fills the mouth without any sense of heaviness or harshness. It is a beautifully knit, lush, complex, elegant red wine that should drink well for 12-15 years. Some tannin has emerged since I tasted it last year, when it was far more velvety. This is a powerhouse, extremely full-bodied, palate-staining wine. 1979 Clerc Milon, Pauillac (slightly oxidized capsules, some top/high shoulder fills)

In 1970 the underachieving fifth growth Clerc Milon was purchased by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, a watershed occasion for the estate, which had been producing medocre wines at best. Strange that the wines weren't always spectacular, if you consider that the vineyards of Clerc Milon lay sandwiched between Mouton and Lafite. Well, by the mid to late 70s, Rothschild had turned around this venerable estate. This represents a considerable value in mature Bordeaux.

It exhibits a deep ruby color, exceptional ripeness, a big, spicy, chocolaty, plummy bouquet, large quantities of fruit, full body, and a very long finish. After tasting it, I wonder how the 1987 vintage received so much criticism in the press.
