1982 Gaja Barbaresco $189.00
91 pionts Robert Parker's Wine Advocate "The 2004 Capo Martino reveals terrific purity, depth and definition in its layers of sweet, ripe fruit, toasted oak, licorice and menthol. With air the wine's frame fills out and the richness of its expression becomes apparent. This blend of 70% Tocai Friuliano, 30% Pinot Bianco, Ribolla, Malvasia and Picolit spent 13 months in Austrian oak tonneaux. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2012." (03/08) 90 points Wine Spectator "Some honey and light almond character, with a hint of toffee. Full-bodied, with good fruit and a ... Read More »

It's not easy making Vin Santo. For starters the grapes (trebbiano and malvasia) are left to dry slowly in a special outbuilding, which concentrates the sugar and flavor component considerably. What little juice is left after this process is fermented and stored in very small casks called caratelli, which are filled just three-fourths of the way. And then time stands still. For four years the wine oxidizes and ages, and then: Perfection! Villa Pillo's Vin Santo is an archetypal example of Tuscany's after dinner sipper. Ideal with biscotto at the close of... Read More »

92 points Wine Enthusiast "Opaque with a dark brooding nose. Great, if somewhat hidden, depth of fruit and excellent balance: the fruit-acid-tannin triangle is textbook perfect. Very tight now, this is a keeper for sure. Try to avoid touching it for three to five years. Some day it will drink like a $50 bottle. Will keep till 2015." (5/1/1999) 90(+?) points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good dark red-ruby color. High-toned aromas of violet, dried flowers and spearmint. Ripe, juicy red berry and dried flower flavors given clarity by sound ... Read More »

One of my favorite producers of Barolo. Elio Grasso is making monumental wines with great balance and classic varietal character. Split between the worlds of new wave and traditonal Piemontese winemaking Elio has been able to fuse the two incorporating the best of both. Micro-oxygenation and large oak barrels give the wine more suppleness, more depth, smoothness without giving up the fruit or terroir of Barolo. Simply stunning wine. 2 Bicchieri Gambero Rosso

This super Tuscan is a blend of Merlot and Sangiovese grown in Gaiole from vineyards set 350-400 meters above sea level, a vineyard that offers a predominance of calcareous sandstone and Alberese stone. Aged in French oak, this 1996 is ready now!

90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Dark garnet with ruby highlights. Enticing nose of clove, white pepper and violet. Fresh and vibrant flavors of mint and anise give way to dark cherry fruit. Finishes with a hint of bitterness. Not as dense or concentrated as some previous vintages from this property, but this is a polished and persuasive wine nonetheless." (Jul/Aug '02)

50% Pinot Grigio, 25% Chardonnay, 25% Sauvignon. This is a truly magnificent wine with layers of mineral, complex fruit aromatics. No barrique flavors just pure nature. (Greg St.Clair, K&L Italian buyer)

93 points Wine Spectator: "Supple, ripe and generous, silky, with beautiful mahogany-scented black cherry, blackberry, rose petal and anise flavors that keep weaving through. Seductive and supple, this also has a veil of tannin that can use until 1998 to 2001 to dissolve." (10/94)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1999 Brunello di Montalcino Rennina, essentially the regular bottling, is a fresh ruby-garnet with focused and ripe red currant and wild cherry fruit, attractive notes of tar and wild fennel, and a balanced, vigorous, and well sustained palate. What’s missing here? Perhaps the spark, the inspiration which separates a very fine wine from an outstanding one. But perhaps we should stop expecting miracles in every vintage from this producer – he has never claimed, after all, to be able to walk on water." (04/05)

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2003 Furore Rosso Riserva is a French-oak aged blend of Aglianico and Piedirosso. This superbly elegant, refined wine opens with perfumed aromatics that lead to a core of ripe red fruit that impresses for its purity and definition. The tannins are finessed and the wine exhibits notable harmony. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2018." (02/08)

"I just tasted this wine and it is humming! A classically styled Barolo from a classic vintage, aged and just drinking well. Gorgeous aromas, classic earthy Serralunga character. Beautiful wine will age well for another decade plus." Greg St.Clair K&L's Italian Buyer

It all began in 1897, when 23-year-old Luigi Einaudi (who was to become Italy’s first President in 1948) purchased the first of the Einaudi estates (poderi) at San Giacomo, near Dogliani, heart of Dolcetto country. Here, Professor Einaudi resided in-between his academic work and the numerous activities as a financial writer and journalist. In spite of the magnitude and multiplicity of his interests, Luigi Einaudi personally implemented the finest, most up-to-date cultivation methods and equipment. This is alive and kicking after nearly 40 years in the bo... Read More »

Birthday bottles are always a fun idea, but in most cases the idea is tastier than the actual wine! If you're in search of a birthday bottle from 1974, you could hardly do better than this perfectly stored Riserva Barbera from Le Colline. Mature notes of cedar and dried bed berries open to reveal fading flower and silky tannins. A wine of contemplation, best enjoyed with old cheeses and a birthday girl or boy who can appreciate the maturity that comes with a bit of age!

According to Robert Parker: "Approaching full maturity, the two 1990 Riservas are delicious to drink, but they can be kept for 5-7 more years. Both are full wines with plenty of glycerin, alcohol, and spice. The Vigna Asinone possesses slightly more aromatic dimension. Both reveal the vintage's sweet fruit, as well as plenty of spice, tobacco, and a chewy aftertaste. This excellent winery has fashioned spicy, sweet, round, rich wines that offer plenty of black-cherry fruit intermixed with earth, leather, dried fruits, and spices." (08/97)

Brooding and very elegant, this Rieserva Barbaresco from back in the day proves that Nebbiolo is the undisputed king of Italian reds, and a long-lived beauty, too. According to Robert Parker: "This medium to full-bodied, highly structured wine possesses fine ripeness, a spicy, forward, undeveloped nose, and the high acidity and tough tannin that mark so many wines of this vintage. After 5-6 more years of cellaring, it should turn out to be a very good..."
