1999 Labegorce, Margaux $36.99
One of our distributors had some wine go missing a couple of years ago and recently just rediscovered it stored perfectly in their temperature controlled warehouse. The Villacampa Ribera is one of those finds and the wine is drinking beautifully. Nuances of roasted plums, asian spicebox, sweet American oak and a rich velvety texture. Those are just some of the things to love about this incredible find. (Keith Mabry, K&L Hollywood)

This is an incredibly rare, fully mature, Spanish gem. Produced from the steep, slate, terraced vineyards of Bierzo by Spain's legendary Mariano Garcia (while he was still making wine at Vega Sicilia!), here is a beautiful example of a perfectly aged Spanish wine that has developed quite beautifully in bottle. Produced from 40% Cabernet, 30% Merlot and 30% Mencia, think of it as a supple, balanced, old school styled Bordeaux blend with a Castillian twist. Savory cherry, hints of sage leaf, green and black peppercorn and an unmistakable character of mat... Read More »

According to Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, May/June 00: "Bright medium ruby. Lively aromas of black raspberry, bitter chocolate and mint. Good texture and restrained sweetness; dark berry flavors are quite youthfully unevolved. Solidly structured wine, finishing with firm but fine tannins and very good length." According to Wine Spectator: "Aromas of berries, chocolate and hints of spices. Medium- to full-bodied, with fine tannins and a light, fresh, fruity aftertaste. Delicious red." (03/02) K&L's notes - This lovely wine is a bit riche... Read More »

94 points Wine Spectator: "A beautiful Champagne, from the complex floral-, coffee- and brioche-scented nose to the graphite, vanilla and citrus flavors. Light-weight and intense, with a lively structure and a long, lingering finish. Drink now through 2018." (11/07) 93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Pale straw. Vibrant, exotically perfumed bouquet evokes fresh pear and nectarine, with a wild spicecake quality adding complexity. Cinnamon-accented orchard fruit flavors are strikingly precise and palate-coating. Delivers outstanding co... Read More »

91 points from Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "(75% tempranillo, 15% garnacha and 5% each of graciano and mazuelo) Medium red. Musky aromas of redcurrant, cherry, herbs and flowers, with a subtle mineral undertone adding lift. A medium-boded wine with red fruit flavors complicated by sweet chewing tobacco, succulent herbs and exotic Indian spices. Gains sweetness and power on the long, sappy finish. This is delicious and pretty complex now, but has the balance to age." (Jul/Aug '08)

91-92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright, saturated medium ruby. Vibrant aromas of crushed boysenberry, blueberry and mineral scents. Thick, fresh, youthful and sweet; a real fruit bomb on the nose and palate. Finishes very long, with big, ripe tannins. This really transcends the vintage." (May/June 01) 90 points Robert Parker: "The dense plum/purple-colored 1999 offers up aromas of truffles, underbrush, espresso, black cherries, and roasted meats. The wine is powerful and muscular with high extract and mouth-searing tannin, it is... Read More »

According to the Wine Spectator: "Almond, tea, caramel and orange peel flavors mingle in this silky white, which has mature flavors, yet the attack is still full and lively, and there's even a bit of tannic grip. Drink now through 2012." (07/09)

It's not easy making Vin Santo. For starters the grapes (trebbiano and malvasia) are left to dry slowly in a special outbuilding, which concentrates the sugar and flavor component considerably. What little juice is left after this process is fermented and stored in very small casks called caratelli, which are filled just three-fourths of the way. And then time stands still. For four years the wine oxidizes and ages, and then: Perfection! Villa Pillo's Vin Santo is an archetypal example of Tuscany's after dinner sipper. Ideal with biscotto at the close of... Read More »

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1999 Carinena Reserva is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carinena, and Merlot selected from the estate’s best parcels and aged for 16 months in Russian oak. Dark ruby/purple-colored, it offers a complex perfume of cedar, leather, mineral, black cherry, and black currant. Medium to full-bodied, the wine has a solid core of ripe fruit and enough structure to unfold for another 1-2 years. It can be enjoyed now through 2015." (02/08)

Shows a lot of mineral and oriental spice in the nose, and those scents really opened up after a few minutes in the glass. The terroir shines through. When asked to compare it to wines from previous vintages, Mr. Prats mentioned it reminds him of the 1985 though not quite as fat. Superb length. The wine shows its Cabernet tannins, but they’re well integrated. 65% cabernet sauvignon, 35% merlot in the vineyard, and in the blend. 55% new oak. Only 40% of the crop went into the grand vin. 21,000 cases produced. According to Robert Parker: "The dark ruby-co... Read More »

According to Robert Parker: "This wine is light to medium-bodied, with sweet currant and smoke-infused flavors and some oak in the background, but plenty of red fruits, vanilla, and dried herbs. This is a soft, well-balanced wine to drink now and over the next 12-15 years." (04/02) K&L's notes - Very aromatic, Graves-style wine with earthy and mineral hints on the nose. Crushed berries on the nose and palate. This is a very elegant yet powerful wine, and quite long on the palate with good grip. Delicious exotic and velvety fruit. 65% cabernet sauvignon,... Jean Leon is a legendary figure in the world of Spanish wine. A young Spanish immigrant from Santander, Leon worked his way up in the US restaurant industry, eventually opening up La Scala in Hollywood with James Dean as his partner. In 1963, he would return to his native Spain, to Penedes (just north of Barcelona) to be exact, to establish a world class winery. Using cuttings from Lafitte-Rothschild, Jean Leon's cabs quickly developed a devoted following inside Spain and beyond. These days, the vineyards are farmed sustainably, and all vineyard wor... This is 100% Chardonnay from the walled Clos of Cazals in Oger. In the past, fruit from this vineyard was joined with that of Mesnil sur Oger for a stupendously good Champagne. Then it occurred to Cazal that its very own Clos might make wonderful and wonderfully original bubbly! Brilliant, luminous, with notes of citronella, hawthorn, rose and violet with apple, pear and citrus on the palate. The bubbles on this one are as fine as fine can be, and the finish brings in subtle cedar and oak. A distinctive style, but one that will find wide appeal!

92 points Robert Parker: "The 1999 Chardonnay Michaud Vineyard boasts a stunning nose of roasted nuts, minerals, tropical fruits, and honeyed citrus. This full-bodied effort is reminiscent of a Batard-Montrachet in its richness, opulence, and minerality. This dense, exquisitely concentrated, and pure wine should drink well for 4-5 years. Brilliant!" (06/02) 90 points Wine Spectator: "Smooth-textured, with polished, graceful, pure pear, fig, citrus and hazelnut flavors that are rich and creamy, finishing lots of finesse and spiciness. 90 points Wine Spectator: "There's a high-toned minty graphite accent to the aroma, with a citric edge on the palate. The structure is overlaid with lemon and bread dough notes. This is tight and crisp on the finish, so break out the sole or shellfish, or wait a few years. Best from 2008 through 2020." (07/07)

We have been working with Champagne De Meric since the beginning of their renaissance, and now their first vintage Sous Bois has been released. It is composed of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay from the villages of Ay, Avize, Cramant, Oger, Mareuil-sur-Ay and Mutigny. It has a fantastic nose of fresh cream and bread dough and the palate has great black cherry Ay Pinot Noir power. There are subtle hints of orange peel and vanilla underneath, almost certainly coming from the all-wood fermentation. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne buyer)

94 points Wine Spectator: "Very appealing for its potpourri of spices. Clove, nutmeg, cinnamon and allspice pick up cherry and orange peel notes as this unfolds on the palate. Dry, intense and well-balanced, with a long finish. Ideal for food. Drink now through 2020. 250 cases imported." (11/07) Like almost all Champagne, this wine has relativly low alcohol, 12.5%.

95 points and a Collectibles designation from the Wine Spectator: "A wine of great intensity, depth and complexity. Beautifully crafted, ripe, rich and creamy, showing off pretty vanilla and mocha-scented oak before a deep core of currant, blackberry, black cherry and minerally flavors fold in. Firm tannins add structure on the finish." (11/02) Dominus is the red wine produced from the historical Napanook vineyard, 124 acres in size, in Yountville, mid-Napa Valley. This bottling comes exclusively from Kistler and Dutton Ranch vineyards in the Russian River Valley. The title is a testament to the mineral and hazelnut scented wines Kistler produces from these Russian River Valley soils. Complex aromas of ripe fruits, spices, toasted almond and hazelnut. Rich and expressive, with a long, lingering finish. Delicious now or will benefit from further aging.

Allen Meadows writes: "Note of reduction, which eventually blew off to reveal strong oak hints and sweet black fruit though the rest of the wine was quite closed, and borderline austere in its flavor delivery. There is acceptable density, good structure and nice length. A good if not exceptional effort." (Burghound, 01/01)

93 points Robert Parker: "This is a strikingly delineated St.-Emilion with an opaque ruby/purple color, and aromas of black currants, blackberries, and wet steel/liquified minerals. The layered, rich, intense 1999 possesses superb fruit purity and medium to full body. This is one of the most concentrated and potentially longest-lived wines of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2025." (04/02)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1999 Brunello di Montalcino Rennina, essentially the regular bottling, is a fresh ruby-garnet with focused and ripe red currant and wild cherry fruit, attractive notes of tar and wild fennel, and a balanced, vigorous, and well sustained palate. What’s missing here? Perhaps the spark, the inspiration which separates a very fine wine from an outstanding one. But perhaps we should stop expecting miracles in every vintage from this producer – he has never claimed, after all, to be able to walk on water." (04/05)

Its dense purple color is followed by a big, spicy nose of black currant liqueur, licorice, and foresty/fern-like scents. It is sweet, medium to full-bodied, and deep, as well as structured, and a Bordeaux-like tannic profile in the finish. It will require patience. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2026+." 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "(a blend of 55% petit verdot, 35% cabernet sauvignon and 10% cabernet franc; Delia Viader says it's the cabernet franc, not the estate's rather serious merlot, that brings a softness to this wine) Medium ruby. Cool aromas of bitter cherry, dark chocolate, fresh herbs and spices. Juicy and penetrating, with firm acidity and chewy, mouthcoating tannins. I find that the cabernet franc sweetens and lengthens the wine's finish." (May/June 02)

According to the Wine Enthusiast: "All five of the prime red Bordeaux varieties comprise this rich and deep wine that drives on with persistence ... 90-92 points Allen Meadows: "The Clos de Vougeot has never been the Domaine's strongest wine, for reasons that have always mystified me since they own so much of it, permitting severe selection and the parcel itself is perfectly situated; this 99 though is well worth your consideration. It's marked by the new wood today but in contrast to the austerity typical of young Clos de Vougeot, the pinot spice is seductive and wonderful in its effusiveness. The flavors too are open, fine and elegant to the point of being almost easy going yet there is no lack of ... Read More »

Martin & Weyrich Winery, originally known as Martin Brothers Winery, began operation in 1981. Wine growing in the region had been around for well over 100 years, gaining much influence with the establishment of Andrew York’s winery, now called York Mountain Winery. Nonetheless, there were only a handful of successful ones along the Central Coast at that time. Thus, the decision to open a new winery was risky at best, especially one that would pioneer into new viticultral areas: growing Italian grapes on the Californian landscape.

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The only SGN produced by Olivier Humbrecht in 1999, the Tokay-Pinot Gris Clos Jebsal Selection de Grains Nobles, sports an apricot compote-scented nose. This full-bodied behemoth is lush, broad, syrupy-textured, and elegant. One of Humbrecht's more civilized SGNs, it is hugely impressive yet does not have the depth readers may have come to expect from this estate's top dessert wines. Drink it over the next 20+ years. 'Splendidly rich and exotic on the nose. Chocolate and vanilla and cream and black cherries. Full body. Very, very ripe tannins. Great virility. Fat and luscious. Brilliant!' This Merlot has ripe dense fruit aromas with a touch of oak to round out the aromas. It is very well balanced. The flavors are also forward but smooth and rich, again with a touch of cedar from the oak. The combination of structure, depth and richness makes this 1999 Merlot drinkable now but it could easily age for five to seven years.

92 points Robert Parker: "The 1999 Springflat Shiraz has dense, opaque purple color, a real intense, minty, creme de cassis nose, with some spicy new oak. The wine is certainly not shy at 15.3% alcohol, but the power is well-harnessed, and the wine is primarily a big, full-bodied, thick, juicy fruit bomb with plenty of texture, purity, and length. It should drink well for 7-8 years, perhaps longer. With a production at 1,200 cases, there is modest availability." (06/01) 91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Saturated ruby. Vintages to date have blended grace, power, and subtlety, resulting in extremely impressive Cabernets. Moreover, they are built to last. Former director (and co-owner) Chrsitian von Guradze has departed, but Bettina Burklin and her cellar master Fritz Knorr clearly have things very much in hand. They rendered an outstanding 2005 collection as well as the best collection of dry 2006 Pfalz Riesling I tasted, the latter from a vintage in which they suffered about a two-thirds loss in normal crop levels, and from which no nobly sweet wines were essayed.
