One of our distributors had some wine go missing a couple of years ago and recently just rediscovered it stored perfectly in their temperature controlled warehouse. The Villacampa Ribera is one of those finds and the wine is drinking beautifully. Nuances of roasted plums, asian spicebox, sweet American oak and a rich velvety texture. Those are just some of the things to love about this incredible find. (Keith Mabry, K&L Hollywood)

This is an incredibly rare, fully mature, Spanish gem. Produced from the steep, slate, terraced vineyards of Bierzo by Spain's legendary Mariano Garcia (while he was still making wine at Vega Sicilia!), here is a beautiful example of a perfectly aged Spanish wine that has developed quite beautifully in bottle. Produced from 40% Cabernet, 30% Merlot and 30% Mencia, think of it as a supple, balanced, old school styled Bordeaux blend with a Castillian twist. Savory cherry, hints of sage leaf, green and black peppercorn and an unmistakable character of mat... Read More »

Lopez de Heredia does not produce a rosado every year! The crop of their Tondonia vineyard was reduced in 1998 due to April springtime frosts. But hot temperatures, low rainfall, and a dry and sunny September resulted in terrific quality grapes. Amazingly complex, this fascinating 11 year-old rosé has a fine, straw-orange color and a "vineux" bouquet. Fresh, fruity, with hints of bitter almonds and hazelnuts, this wine has refined, supple flavors that endure. 60% Garnacha (Grenache), 30% Tempranillo, 10% Viura.

91 points from Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "(75% tempranillo, 15% garnacha and 5% each of graciano and mazuelo) Medium red. Musky aromas of redcurrant, cherry, herbs and flowers, with a subtle mineral undertone adding lift. A medium-boded wine with red fruit flavors complicated by sweet chewing tobacco, succulent herbs and exotic Indian spices. Gains sweetness and power on the long, sappy finish. This is delicious and pretty complex now, but has the balance to age." (Jul/Aug '08)

According to the Wine Spectator: "Almond, tea, caramel and orange peel flavors mingle in this silky white, which has mature flavors, yet the attack is still full and lively, and there's even a bit of tannic grip. Drink now through 2012." (07/09)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1999 Carinena Reserva is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carinena, and Merlot selected from the estate’s best parcels and aged for 16 months in Russian oak. Dark ruby/purple-colored, it offers a complex perfume of cedar, leather, mineral, black cherry, and black currant. Medium to full-bodied, the wine has a solid core of ripe fruit and enough structure to unfold for another 1-2 years. It can be enjoyed now through 2015." (02/08)

This tiny Rioja Alavesa estate is surely one to watch. All estate fruit, hand harvested, and carefully vinified with native yeasts, this gran reserva is truly a 'wow' wine and an amazing deal in traditional gran reserva Rioja. Dark cherries, roasted meat, and hints of bittersweet cocoa all present themselves on the nose. A deeper sniff reveals a touch of coffee, a subtle whiff of tomato leaf and again, an intense cherry character. Flavors show incredible depth, intensity and freshness for a Gran reserva wine at this point in its evolution. For a rea... Read More »

93 points and one the Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2009: "Brioche, chamomile and dried pear flavors are rich and expressive in this polished white. Silky and fresh on the palate, with a haunting honeyed and floral finish. Best on its own, as a meditation wine. Drink now." (07/09)

Jean Leon is a legendary figure in the world of Spanish wine. A young Spanish immigrant from Santander, Leon worked his way up in the US restaurant industry, eventually opening up La Scala in Hollywood with James Dean as his partner. In 1963, he would return to his native Spain, to Penedes (just north of Barcelona) to be exact, to establish a world class winery. Using cuttings from Lafitte-Rothschild, Jean Leon's cabs quickly developed a devoted following inside Spain and beyond. These days, the vineyards are farmed sustainably, and all vineyard wor... 90 points Wine Spectator: "This mature red shows a light brick color, with delicate aromas of spice, dried fruit and rose. Supple and still lively, offering flavors of dried berry, tea, vanilla and spice. This whispers rather than shouts, but has distinctive character. For fans of the traditional style. Drink now. 416 cases made." (06/09)

93 points from Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Medium red. Suave red berry, kirsch, anise and dried rose aromas are compelling and strikingly precise. Silky in texture and packed with sweet red berry, licorice, vanilla bean and floral pastille flavors. Fine-grained tannins lend structure to this suave, flat-out delicious wine, which possesses outstanding depth and complexity and finishes with haunting floral echoes." 93 points from Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "True gold, but remarkably youthful for its age. W ild, complex bouquet of pungent flowers, succulent herbs, orange peel, violet, vanilla, toasted nuts and baking spices. Rich, deep and beautifully concentrated, with surprising energy to the ripe pear and poached apple flavors complemented by marzipan and vanilla. This actually tightens up on the finish, showing a lingering exotic, spicy character. You could drink this right now or even hold it for a few more years." (Sept/Oct 2006) 93 points fro... 90 points from Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Dark red. Toasty red berries and cherry on the nose, with oak spice, mocha and dried flowers adding complexity. Smooth, fleshy flavors of ripe cherry and sweet berries are framed by supple tannins. Gains sweetness and an exotic, sweet chewing tobacco quality on the sappy finish. The oak character builds slowly and lingers behind. This is ready to drink." (Jul/Aug '08)

92 points Robert Parker: "The 1968 Vina Valoria is a more substantial wine than the 1973. Brickish ruby-colored, it yields a lovely perfume of cedar, tobacco, spice box, and cherry fruit. Its personality is all about elegance with nicely concentrated, ripe fruit enmeshed in a velvety-textured, medium-bodied wine. Considerably more structured than the 1973, it should continue to drink well for another 4-6 years." (02/07)

92 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1994 Gran Reserva 890, from an excellent vintage, exhibits a dark ruby/brick color. Its complex perfume is composed of nuances of scorched earth, cedar, mineral, red currants and cherry. On the palate, additional notes of toast, fungi, and floral scents emerge. This elegant wine has sufficient depth, concentration and weight to drink well for another 6-8 years." (Feb. 2007) 91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep red. Recaredo is one of the world's great sparkling wine projects. Started in 1924, proprietor Josep Matep Capellades was a sparkling wine disgorger who began reserving his own bottles. He built his own cellar and eventually founded Caves Recaredo. Over the last 80 years the winery has acquired some of the best land in Alt Penedes and most of the vineyards are on calcareous soil (similar to that of Champagne). Keeping with tradition the wines are aged on the lees under natural cork enclosures, hand disgorged without freezing the neck and no dosage is adde... Read More »
