What an intriguing wine! The Valettes are known for the extensive barrel aging of their wines, which comes through quite distinctively in the 2001 "000". This has a heady bouquet redolent of aged Parmigiano-Reggiano, with an undercurrent of lime and caramel that carry over to the palate. But what's so remarkable is that despite the secondary aromas on the nose, this wine is lively and fresh in the mouth, with hints of anise, delicate fruit and nuts awash in gorgeous bright acidity. A spectacular find.

93 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Longtime readers know that the Valettes are committed to the long-term barrel aging of their top wines, so they won't be surprised to learn that the 2001 Pouilly-Fuisse Clos Reyssie Reserve Particuliere was bottled in December, 2005 after 48 months in barrel. Its nuanced nose reveals fresh minerals, hints of butterscotch, notes of citrus juices, as well as a traces of rancio, the French term for the aromas of an aged wine. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated, and satin-textured, this fascinating wine offers ... Read More »

According to the Wine Spectator: "Ripe and plummy, with pretty floral aromas, tight, compact cherry and currant flavors and firm tannins that keep them in check. The flavors need time to mellow and expand..." (02/91) According to Robert Parker: "The Savigny-Les-Beaune Les Lavieres is excellent, with deep, medium-bodied, tannic yet concentrated flavors. It should possess excellent aging potential. It has fine color, is built for the long haul, and should last 12-15 years." (01/90)

According to Robert Parker: "This wine from Auxey-Duresses exhibits good winemaking. The Auxey-Duresses-Clos du Val is elegant, and the tannins fine. It is an attractive, medium-bodied, spicy, earthy wine, ideal for drinking over the next 5-6 years." (01/90)

According to Robert Parker: "Dubreuil has always made fashionable, elegant, light-colored wines known for their finesse..." (12/92)

According to Robert Parker: "One of Gramont's best wines year in and year out is the Pommard Le Clos Blanc. The 1987 shows excellent rich, ripe fruit, a nice spicy, vanilla-scented oakiness, plenty of body, and surprising power for a 1987. It is drinkable now but will certainly last until 1995-1996." (01/90)

According to the Wine Spectator: "Forward and delicious, with very good richness. Shows vanilla, cream and apple character, with very rich flavors and very good concentration. Drink now." (08/91)

Lovely and unabashedly light to medium bodied, this is Pinot for the true Pinot lover, not the sort that thinks Pinot should be pitch black in color and taste like Syrah! Warm earth and mature red cherry aromas lead to a hint of truffle and a very evolved palate impression. Classic and still relatively high toned. Ready to go now as a match for strong cheeses.

According to the Wine Spectator: "Lovely, with a fine bead of blackberry and floral flavors. Just touches of dilution and tannins clamp down on the finish, but the fruit is holding up fine.--Red Burgundy vertical." (02/95)

According to Allen Meadows: "Chanson is of course a well known old-line négociant ... Chanson is a big vineyard proprietor that owns 38 ha of vines outright. Specifically, they are among the most important holders of Beaune 1ers with an impressive range of ten different holdings plus a smattering of vines elsewhere..." According to the Wine Spectator: "Firm and generous with ripe plum and cherry flavors that are supple with enough tannin for three to five years' cellaring. Try now." (07/89)

Have we lost our minds? Grand Cru red Burgundy, fully mature and ready to drink tonight for less than $80? It's true. The downturn in the economy is bad for some, good for others! Earthy, rustic, evolved and pure, this is an experience to revel in, especially when served with aged cheeses.

According to Robert Parker: " The 1988 vintage attests to a remarkably auspicious start for the new Domaine Leroy in Vosne-Romanee." (01/90)

89 points Wine Spectator: "Hard and tannic, but stylish and flavorful, offering cherry, chocolate and toast aromas and flavors that are rich, round and long. Needs until 1997 to 2000 to shed its tannins. " (02/91)

Can an entry level white Burgundy a lowly Bourgogne appellation wine, survive 20 years in the bottle? If anyone's can, it would be the great firm of Leroy. This perfectly stored gem is priced for the wine shopper unafraid of a little risk and experimentation!

According to the Wine Spectator: "Intense, concentrated, and well focused, with tiers of rich cherry, berry, chocolate and toasty oak flavors that are framed by firm, chewy tannins. Best to cellar until 1994 or '95." (03/91)

92 points Robert Parker: "This wine is excellent. It exhibits a deep ruby color, exceptional ripeness, a big, spicy, chocolaty, plummy bouquet, large quantities of fruit, full body, and a very long finish. After tasting it, I wonder how the 1987 vintage received so much criticism in the press. It has a great dimension of flavor and a penetrating bouquet reminiscent of beef blood, chocolate, ripe berry fruit, and oriental spices. On the palate, the wine is very fleshy and concentrated with soft tannins and an amazing finish. This wine is of extremely high... Read More »

93 points Wine Spectator: "Deep, rich and opulent, with marvelous tension between the fruit and the oak, leather and cinnamon notes, from the first whiff to the last echo of the long, long finish. A generous, delicious wine, supple and seductive. Drink NOW TO '95, if you can wait that long." (04/90)

90 points Wine Spectator: "Lots of concentrated fruit flavors with sweet cherry, raspberry and plummy fruit that's very ripe. It's full-bodied and fairly tannic on the finish, but altogether it's a well made wine. Needs some time in the bottle to smooth out." (09/87)
Inventory: Hollywood Main Warehouse
According to the Wine Spectator: "A ripe, rangy style, with plenty of strawberry and plum flavors intertwined with spice and leather overtones. Not a lightweight by any means; may need until '95 to settle down." (11/91)

"...another very good source. Recent vintages have been most impressive." Clive Coates, Cote d'Or 1997

According to Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The domaine's Pernand-Vergelesses-Ile des Vergelesses has lots of rich raspberry and blackberry fruit, married beautifully with the toasty, spicy oak. Medium bodied, well structured with good acidity and tannin, this wine should last for up to 10-12 years." (01/90)

"Marc and Therese Maniere have been running this family domaine since 1972, and today make their wine by Accad methods: total destemming, and a week-long maceration a froid before fermentation. After that the wine is matured using a goodly proportion of new oak. In recent years they have ceased selling off any of the produce in bulk. There are good things here..." (Clive Coates, "Cote d'Or")

According to the Wine Spectator: "Generous and supple up front before the tannins kick in. The plum, cherry, spice and cedar flavors are concentrated and very rich, finishing with good length. Drink in 1995 and beyond." (02/91)

Allen Meadows writes: "Note of reduction, which eventually blew off to reveal strong oak hints and sweet black fruit though the rest of the wine was quite closed, and borderline austere in its flavor delivery. There is acceptable density, good structure and nice length. A good if not exceptional effort." (Burghound, 01/01)

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Domaine Leflaive has enjoyed many successful vintages over the years - 1979, 1985, 1986, and 1989 come to mind immediately - but the 1992s are the finest young wines this domaine has produced. Yields averaged 45 hectoliters per hectare, far below most recent vintages. The wines are renowned for their purity and elegance, but the 1992s also display a special level of richness and intensity." (10/93)

91 points Allen Meadows: "Very aromatic with pungent leather and earth notes followed by big, rich, slightly austere flavors and excellent length. Though this is solidly structured, it is not hard and this offers lovely balance and this has retained a certain elegance and freshness to it that is most appealing." (Tasted: Oct 20, 2002)
Inventory: Hollywood Main Warehouse
According to Allen Meadows: "Wonderfully complex and delectably expressive nose with truffle, earth and game notes that lead to medium weight, nicely rounded flavors of good richness and fine length... it is a clear success for the vintage and perfect now." (Tasted: Nov 17, 2001)

91 points Wine Spectator: "Generous, sharply focused raspberry, cherry and vanilla aromas and flavors carry through from the first whiff to the final echo of the long finish in this lean but flavorful wine. The well-integrated tannins will need until 1994 or '95 to soften." (02/91)

96 points Robert Parker: "This firm, which has major holdings in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin, has turned out some stunning wines at the premier cru level. The color is a saturated dark ruby. The nose explodes from the glass, offering a melange of scents, including black-raspberries, toasty new oak, cloves, vanilla, and candy. In the mouth, there is astonishing richness, a thick, well-defined texture, and a flamboyant, moderately tannic finish that lasts well over a minute. The personality hallmarks of the 1990 vintage, the chewy, super-ripe characte... Read More »

An old-fashioned producer, and an old fashioned wine, for the old fashioned Burgundy lover who laments the current trend toward flashy, ripe and fruity wines. This is certainly not flashy! Rather, it is an example of classic 1er Cru Pinot Noir, meant for equally funky and earthy cheeses!

94 points Wine Spectator: "This crisp, lively wine bursts onto the palate, with juicy currant, cherry and blackberry flavors that keep pumping through the long, fairly tart finish. Balanced for the long haul, with the tannins pretty well submerged. Best after 1995." (11/91)

According to the Wine Spectator: "A bit austere and reined in, but the moderate tannins are holding back lovely plum, berry and spice aromas and flavors. Remains subtle and elegant through the finish." (11/92) According to Robert Parker: "The Vosne-Romanee-Les Malconsorts is a sweet, round, agreeable, medium-bodied wine, with an attractive, light perfume, and a straightforward finish..." (10/92)

90 points Robert Parker: "The 1987 Charmes-Chambertin is an unqualified success, with great depth, richness, and ripeness, and the potential to last for another 10 to 15 years. For those who lament the fact that burgundy does not taste the way it used to, Bouree will change your mind." (01/90)

According to Robert Parker: "The Volnay Champans is every bit the equal of the Clos des Chenes, but is more structured and tannic. I would advise waiting until 1991-1992 for the Champans, after which I would fully expect it to last for another 10 to 12 years. It is an impressive, rich, berry-scented wine." (01/90)

According to Clive Coates: "[the Vosne Romanee] benefits from the economies of scale; for the produce of the young vines - a part of the parcel had to be replanted after the 1985 frost - can be vinified separately and set aside. It is a splendid village example, full and sturdy, but succulent, rich and ample, with a good base of oak."

92 points Allen Meadows: "Clean, pure and still quite tight on the nose with medium weight, intense, beautifully delineated flavors that simply ooze minerality. This isn't especially dense but it is extremely pretty and finishes with outstanding length. Tasted twice with consistent notes." (Tasted: Nov 22, 2005)

91 points Robert Parker: 'The Corton-Clos du Roi, of which there are only 150 cases, is truly superb, displaying a profound bouquet of minerals, black fruits, and spicy oak intertwined with the subtle scent of herbs. In the mouth, it is extremely deep, rich, and powerful, with a stunning finish. Given its relatively aggressive tannins, I would wait at least 2-3 years before drinking this excellent wine." (01/90) According to Allen Meadows: " Impressively complex and still primary red and black fruit aromas introduce big, intense, rich flavors of excelle... Read More »

According to the Wine Spectator: "Tightly wound, tannic and a bit drying on the finish, with modest mush-room-tinged cherry flavors that turn toward lemon-lime on the finish. Needs time to smooth out. Try in 1994." (02/91)
Inventory: Redwood City
93 points Allen Meadows: " A really lovely nose that is still fresh while being fully mature and reflects moderate sous bois, spice, earth and the truffle-character that fine old Ruchottes often reflects and this aspect is also picked up on the delicious, vibrant and intense middle weight flavors that offer fine punch on the mouth coating and admirably long finish. This is a terrific '88 that does not reflect the hard edge that many do. Drink now and over the next 20 years, perhaps longer." (Tasted: Mar 08, 2008)

Naturally we are not talking about a point of purchase sale here. Perfectly stored, ideally aged and exquisite Burgundy does not come cheap, that is for certain. 90 points Robert Parker: "The Premier Cru Clos St.-Jacques is deliciously fruity, soft, much more supple, and less ageworthy than the Gevrey-Chambertin-Clos de la Justice. While I am rarely ever enthralled by Bouree Pere et Fils' white wines, the red wines are of extremely high quality, particularly in the top vintages. They are very traditional burgundies that are vatted for over three weeks, kept in old oak barrels, and bottled unfiltered. In fact, the Bouree Pere et Fils may be the last firm in the Cote d'Or to bottle their burgundies in a top vintage... Read More »

According to Clive Coates: "This is another top Savigny domaine which, like Maurice Ecard, producers Savigny without the hard sauvage aspect many of them present in their youth. Jean-Marc Pavelot's wines are elegant plump and understated, letting all the fruit sing out, yet never simple. There is depth here; and the wines last."

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1990 Corton-Renardes has a demure, stone and boysenberry-scented nose. This medium-to-full-bodied, silky-textured wine has great depth of dark cherry fruit in its flavor profile. It remains youthfully healthy, with primary fruit flavors intermingled with hints of secondary perfumes and a structured, solid finish. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2010." (10/2000)

According to Robert Parker: "The wines from the Clos Frantin vineyards in the Cote de Nuits and their Chablis estate, Long-Depaquit, rank with the finest made in Burgundy." (01/90)
