This was actually a "special label" for a Nevada merchant that never ended up taking it. Their loss is our gain! Let's call it an off dry (leaning more towards the dry) estate QbA. It has just the right amount of age and is drinking perfect for a quaffer, and check out that price!

According to Wine Spectator: "Round and off-dry, offering a silky texture that wraps around the apple, pear and tart peach flavors. Drinkable now." (11/93) From one of Germany's most age-worthy estates, this 1992 should be expressive and delicious, with the sugars helping maintain its vibrance in the cellar. Gorgeous smoky Saar, hints of cassis and tons of wet stones, all perched atop a crystalline steely backbone. Love this!!!

94 points Wine Spectator: "Terrific auslese. Pure, vibrant and elegant, with a panoply of peach, lime and slate aromas and flavors matched to a seamless frame. Lovely aftertaste of baked apple and vanilla. Drink now through 2025." (03/05) ETA: Late Sept/Early Oct 2009.

Stefan Bollig (vintage 1961) is passionately devoted to his work and is a fine example of the new generation of Mosel vintners. The family has been producing wine since the 17th Century, but new cellars and house have been built on the outskirts of Trittenheim. The total holdings of 4 hectares (10 acres) are tended by the family themselves, the steeply sloping vineyards being composed mainly of slatey soil. Stefan has been managing the estate since 1987, after completing his viticultural studies and practical experience in Trier and Bad Kreuznach. Stefan... Read More »

92 points Wine Spectator: "Young and unevolved, yet this shows remarkable clarity and delicacy for 2003. Very silky in texture and bright, framing the apricot, lime and slate flavors nicely. Very harmonious, with a long, lingering aftertaste. Drink now through 2020." (02/05) According to Pierre Rovani writing for the Wine Advocate: "Fresh flowers and hints of herbs are found in the nose of the soft, light to medium-bodied 2003 Riesling Spatlese Wehlener Sonnenuhr. A delicately-flavored offering, it reveals notes of herbal tea, and lilies in its feminine... Read More »

Importer Rudi Wiest has on occasion been known to hold back some of his wines until he feels they are showing at their peak. For this occasion, we have the 2004 Bert Simon Kabinett, just released, and drinking spectacularly well. The wine has just started to develop the complexity that bottle aged riesling gets with roasted pear flavors, succulent minerality and a hint of petrol. The wine is focused, balanced and finishes with wonderful precision. (Keith Mabry, K&L Hollywood)

The estate was founded by Jost Schmitt in 1549, and has been in family possession since those days. Riesling is cultivated in some of the prime vineyards in Nierstein, including the classic Hipping. The grandfather of the present owner, also named Franz-Karl Schmitt, was renowned for his striving to produce great wines. He was the first to produce Trockenbeerenauslese in the Rheinhessen around 1900! This Pettenthal Auslese comes from the Roter Hang or "Red Slope", a long hillside of vineyards that sits directly on the Rhein river and is composed of weath... Read More »

This is a new DI property for us producing great wines from some of the top sites in the Kamptal. Michaela Haas is the 4th generation of this family to run the 15 ha domaine. This is Allram's best Riesling, and we think it's one of the best in the Kamptal! Offering peach notes and very full and ripe on the nose, it is wonderfully thick and juicy on the palate, offering both sweet and spicy acid. Delicious now, though there is potential for improvement with cellaring, too!

The Ehlen winery has been family owned and operated since 1668. Currently, Stephan Ehlen is the owner and winemaker. He studied at the wine school in Bernkastel Kues back in the 1950s. Winemaking is tightly weaved into the social culture of the nearby town of Lösnich. The presence of viticulture has been proven to date back 2000 years; the evidence being the Roman wine-press unearthed at the base of the vineyards across the river from Lösnich. In 1999, The Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt estate celebrated its 650th anniversary (1349–1999). The first documented mention of a vineyard purchase dates back to 1349. In 1978, the Günther Reh family acquired the estate from the Reichsgrafen (imperial counts) of Kesselstatt. Today, Annegret Reh-Gartner and her husband Gerhard Gartner carry on this Riesling tradition. In 1999, the headquarters moved from Palais Keselstatt in Trier to Schloss Marienlay in the Ruwer Valley. The Riesling Enchenberg is a very mineral-rich wine. The 2002 has 10.5 g of residual sugar which adds an ideal amount of fat to the searing acidity of this wine. Even as a 2002, the wine is still young and would benefit from 2 or 3 years before being drunk. Keep up to 8 - 10 years.

This venerable estate has a major holding of the most famous German vineyard, the Berncasteler Doctor. Luckily, it is not resting on this nor any of its other laurels. Today only sustainable agricultural practices are used in its 12 hectares of prime Mosel Valley vineyards, with no use of pesticides, herbicides (special herbs are planted to kill weeds), insecticides (use of pheromones instead), no chemical fertilizers (only mulch from pips, stems and skins of grapes) or heavy machinery which compacts the slaty soils with nearly all work done by hand. 96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2000 Riesling Rangen de Thann Clos St.-Urbain reveals awesome aromatic depth to its botrytis, apricot, mineral, and quince-scented nose. This medium to full-bodied wine is hugely concentrated, densely packed with smoke-infused white fruits, and has exceptional balance. A profound effort, it is complex and displays an awe-inspiring finish. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2018." (10/02)

Offers an unusual balance for this cuvee, as it's purely mineral, with no influence of jammy botrytis. Extremely tactile wine..." 91 points Wine Spectator: "Opulent, with pineapple, guava,... These factors, combined with controlled environmentally sound viticulture (consistently practiced here for more than 25 years) result in a collection of first-class wines. They are distinctive and full of character. Heyl zu Herrnsheim is a trailblazer in ecological viticulture in Germany. It bursts from the glass with magnificent mineral and lemony caramel aromas. It is medium to full-bodied, admirably focused, and possesses a laser-like, syrupy personality. As early as 1742 records show that ancestors of the Zilliken family were active as wine producers in both Saarburg and Ockfen. The status of the estate and the reputation of its wines were primarily the work of the Royal Prussian District Forester, Ferdinand Geltz (1851-1925). As an affirmation of his achievements, the estate still carries his name. The only grape variety used at this historic estate is Riesling, which is cultivated on 27,5 acres. Former director (and co-owner) Chrsitian von Guradze has departed, but Bettina Burklin and her cellar master Fritz Knorr clearly have things very much in hand.
