91 points Robert Parker: "One of the stars of the vintage, this opaque purple-colored wine possesses a gorgeously perfumed, exotic, smoky, blackcurrant, Asian spice, and sweet vanillin-scented bouquet. It is followed by thick, rich, moderately tannic flavors that exhibit medium to full body, good structure, outstanding purity, and a classically layered, long, pure finish. This terrific Pichon-Lalande should evolve effortlessly for 18-20 years. Anticipated maturity: 2001-2020." (02/97) According to the Wine Spectator: "An extremely well-balanced and well... Read More »

90% cabernet sauvignon, 5% merlot, 5% cabernet franc. This ideally cellared Cab is brownish with brick at rim, with a very earthy aroma with pronounced soy, mushroom, leather, peat and smoke. This mature red has plenty of fruit in evidence with flavors of soy and a bit of tannin in the finish. Drink now with savory, slow cooked beef or lamb.

97 points Wine Spectator: "Superbly structured, with breathtaking aromas of plums, chocolate and berries that follow through on the palate. Full-bodied, with full tannins and a long, alluring finish. Needs time, better after 2002." 96 points Robert Parker: "Dark ruby/purple, with a tight yet profound bouquet of cedar, blackcurrants, spicy oak, and minerals, this full-bodied, deeply concentrated, exceptionally well-balanced wine is, atypically, too brawny and big to drink young. Anticipated maturity: 1994-2015." K&L's notes - A Jesse Ventura of a w... Read More »

Colheita is basically a tawny port from a single vintage, matured in oak casks for at least 7 years although most are aged in oak for a lot longer. Both the harvest year and the bottling date are mentioned on the label. This 1983 Coheita was bottled by Wiese & Krohn (names of the two Norwegian founders of the firm), who are best known for their Colheitas. Robert Parker counts 1983 as amoung the best Port vintages of the previous century, rating it 92 points and ready to drink. The delicate, nutty flavours in this wine make it a perfect dessert wine fo... Read More »

Can a California Pinot Noir last well into its third decade? If any a wine could do it from the Golden State, our money would be on Chalone! Perched high on the western slopes of the remote Gavilan Mountain Range, 1,800 feet above California's Salinas Valley, Chalone Vineyard represents a singular convergence of terroir and winemaking. It's a site that was deemed unique enough to have its very own AVA! Chalone Pinot Noir, produced in true Burgundian fashion, shows uncommon power, depth and complexity. Not to mention its ability to age.

97 points and Wine of the Year from the Wine Spectator: "The greatest Ducru produced this century. Breathtaking aromas of berries, violets, vanilla and blackberries set the stage for a wine that's full-bodied and tannic, yet very fine and long in the mouth. This has fabulous structure for aging and will be best after 2004." 94 points Robert Parker: "A classic, compelling example of Ducru-Beaucaillou that should not be missed."

We love these so-called off vintages from the classic producers because you get much more bang for your buck. This 1967 is archetypal claret with cedar and red fruit notes mingling with hints of oak and subtle spice. Delicious now, and a birthday bottle that would be hard to beat.

93 points Wine Spectator (05/90). According to Robert Parker: "Very highly regarded by the chateau, I have found the 1978 to be very good... It is dark ruby with a moderately intense bouquet of herbs, black cherries, spice, oak, and leather. On the palate, the wine is medium to full bodied, with a dusty tannic texture." (Bordeaux book, 1998)

95 points Robert Parker: "In 1978, I had the 1961 Pichon Lalande from a magnum in which it was quite unready, but since then I have had the wine several times from a regular bottle (most recently at the chateau in March 1988) where it was equally impressive, and approaching its apogee. The wine is dark, almost opaque in color, with a huge, ripe, plummy bouquet and savory scents of cedar, toffee, and chocolate. The 1961 Pichon Lalande is rich, full bodied, viscous, and deep on the palate with a luscious, silky finish. Stylistically, it is reminiscent of t... Read More »

The presence of viticulture has been proven to date back 2000 years; the evidence being the Roman wine-press unearthed at the base of the vineyards across the river from Lösnich. In 1999, The Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt estate celebrated its 650th anniversary (1349–1999). The first documented mention of a vineyard purchase dates back to 1349. In 1978, the Günther Reh family acquired the estate from the Reichsgrafen (imperial counts) of Kesselstatt. Today, Annegret Reh-Gartner and her husband Gerhard Gartner carry on this Riesling tradition. In 1999, the headquarters moved from Palais Keselstatt in Trier to Schloss Marienlay in the Ruwer Valley. 94 points Wine Spectator (02/90) 90 points Robert Parker: "The 1978 Las Cases has taken on a garnet hue with some dark ruby tints. The nose is more complex and penetrating than the flavors. The wine offers classic, mineral, lead pencil, smoky, earthy scents, with plenty of ripe fruit, and none of the vegetal herbaceousness that many 1978s have begun to exhibit. The attack offers good ripeness, medium to full body, higher acidity than many more recent vintages, and considerable tannin in the hard finish. Although this wine possesses outstanding complexit... Stefan Bollig (vintage 1961) is passionately devoted to his work and is a fine example of the new generation of Mosel vintners. The family has been producing wine since the 17th Century, but new cellars and house have been built on the outskirts of Trittenheim. The total holdings of 4 hectares (10 acres) are tended by the family themselves, the steeply sloping vineyards being composed mainly of slatey soil. The 1983 vintage in Germany was given 93 points by the Wine Spectator, and described as "Very fruity, ripe, round; little botrytis. Drink or hold." ... Read More »

According to Robert Parker: "Dark ruby/garnet with some amber at the edge, the 1978 Beychevelle tastes close to maturity. A lovely bouquet of ripe berry fruit, oak, and spice is followed by a wine that is slightly sweet, soft, and savory, with some unresolved tannins. It remains a bit chunky, but is still satisfying and flavorful." Bordeaux Book, 1998)

This venerable estate has a major holding of the most famous German vineyard, the Berncasteler Doctor. Luckily, it is not resting on this nor any of its other laurels. Today only sustainable agricultural practices are used in its 12 hectares of prime Mosel Valley vineyards, with no use of pesticides, herbicides (special herbs are planted to kill weeds), insecticides (use of pheromones instead), no chemical fertilizers (only mulch from pips, stems and skins of grapes) or heavy machinery which compacts the slaty soils with nearly all work done by hand.
