Some may perceive a lack of quality here, just because the Dashwood S.B. is priced so very low. That would be a big mistake. Once in a while a true value like this one crops up, and those who are willing to spend a lot less than they typically do for a bottle of wine are repaid in spades. It's got what you want (cut grass, gooseberries, crispness, acidity and refreshment) without even a hint of that overly tropical, Jolly Rancher or cat pee thing that plagues too many low end Kiwi whites. We are big fans of the Dashwood, and you should be, too!

Another screaming deal from New Zealand! I bought the last 25 cases or so of this delightful elegant Pinot Noir from Wairarapa on the south end of the North island. The wine has a pretty nose with strawberry, cherry, clove, forest floor and some mineral notes. On the palate their are moderate, soft fine tannins and a juicy mouth-feel with good length. This one's an elegant complex wine with an emphasis on fruit expression, structure and complexities with ripe flavors. Harvested at physiological ripeness this 2008 Waipara Springs Pinot Noir has sweet red berry fruit and vanilla aromas with hints of complexities. On the palate the low pH gives elegance to the natural fruit sweetness and the minimal extraction has resulted in a fine tannin structure.

This single vineyard Riesling is delicately scented with citrus blossom, talc, white peach and on thepalate has flavors of pink grapefruit and zest, plus an obvious minerality. Delicate but complete even at this early stage in its development, the palate is linear but not to the point of austerity, the texture is silky with a restrained richness and the aftertaste is long. The wine appears to have a big future, although whether it will live to the 10-20 years that some of these wines can achieve is yet to be determined!

Woah! Insane aromas of candied orange peel, clove, cinnamon, mace, a pungent honey note, marmalade, baked apricot, brioche, this is not your everyday New Zealand white. Powerful on the entry, broad and rich (think orange flan, spice cake) but crisp acidity and brisk minerality quickly follow, girdling the ample flesh of the wine. (This really shows the concentrating effect of very small berries. Built like Mae West, and may age as conspicuously well.)

Very pale white gold, this beautiful Riesling shows a unique aromatic expression with up-front tropical fruit (guava, pineapple) but also notes of nut oil, hot rock, sea spray/iodine, Indian spice; and an attractive, wintergreen lift. The world's southern most whisky distillery opened in Dunedin in the late 1960's. The Willowbank distillery first produced two blended whiskies. Production ceased in 1997 and the distillery was dismantled in 1999. The New Zealand Malt Whisky Company then secured the remaining whisky stocks, still ageing in barrels. The Milford & Prestons brands were created to showcase these fine, limited edition whiskys.
