Cremant de Bourgogne Rosé, Perle d'Aurore, Louis Bouillot Top Pick!
Cremant de Bourgogne Rosé, Perle d'Aurore, Louis Bouillot

This delightful Rosé sparkling wine comes from Burgundy. It is made of 80% Pinot Noir, and 20% Gamay Noir. The charming eye of the swan color comes from the addition of Pinot Noir to the wine when the lees are disgorged, following the traditional fermentation in the individual bottle, in the champagne method. On the palate it is very rich and fruity but just off-dry on the finish. The mousse is explosive, with a very creamy palate impression. It shows just a hint of the earthiness of a Pinot Noir from Burgundy. This is charming rosé, subtle and deligh... Read More »

2007 Domaine des Niales, Rhedon-Marin Mâcon-Villages Vieilles Vignes
2007 Domaine des Niales, Rhedon-Marin Mâcon-Villages Vieilles Vignes

This charming Chardonnay from the Macon comes from a small grower. Lionel Rhedon-Marin is a recent graduate of the College of Viticulture in the nearby village of Davaye, where Guffens trained. All of their young-vine fruit is sold in bulk to one of the better negociants, who is pleased to have it, since Lionel is such a careful grower. But their old-vine fruit, all over 45 years of age, is kept for the Domaine wine, which is charming and elegant. On the palate this is focused and bright, with a nice spicy note and lovely acidity, as well as some pret... Read More »

Chardonnay, Plaisir des Princes Top Pick!
Chardonnay, Plaisir des Princes

In a plentiful vintage, some vineyards in Burgundy produce more wine than they can legally sell. When they do, they declassify the overage as Vin de Table. This white Burgundy from the Mâcon falls into that category. It is actually 2008 Mâcon Villages, but the crop was large and the market softer, thanks to the weak dollar. Remember, if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and looks like a duck but sells for peanuts, who cares what they call it? (Keith Wollenberg, K&L Burgundy Buyer)

2007 Domaine des Nembrets Denis Barraud Pouilly-Fuissé "Les Chataigniers", Top Pick!
2007 Domaine des Nembrets Denis Barraud Pouilly-Fuissé "Les Chataigniers",

One of our favorite producers is Denis Barraud, who runs the Domaine des Nembrets. This cuvée comes from his estate vineyards on the slopes of the Roche de Vergisson, a giant basalt monolith, surrounded by complex and folded rocky, well-drained soils with limestone outcroppings. It is bright and fresh, generous and open, but shows a continuous thread of mineral and spice, with an attractive rich and lovely lemon-cream note. The hint of toasty oak and leesiness make it open and generous, and complement the focus of the wine. (Keith Wollenberg, K&L Burgu... Read More »

2006 Nicolas Potel Santenay 1er Cru " Les Gravières"

Bright and cheerful, with very pretty red fruit notes, this is simply charming. Located near the border with Chassagne Montrachet, in the best area of Santenay, this is rather Volnay-like, with fine elegant structure, pretty red and black fruit notes, and a lovely open character. This is, quite simply, charming Pinot Noir with a profound sense of place. (Keith Wollenberg, K&L Burgundy Buyer, 02/09)

Bright and earthy, with a long and elegant finish. Marconnets is on the border with Beaune, on the slope above Narbantons. This has a full mid-palate, with lots of fine tannins, and an elegant structure. It was vinified with partial stems, and will age beautifully, or be lovely now with an hour in the decanter. Of the 2004s I have tried recently this was nothing short of truly impressive and lovely. Quite frankly, it's delicious and a terrific value. And at 30% off the original price, it won't be around for long. The focused black fruit notes are followed by a long and spicy finish. It is just starting to develop elegant secondary aromas, with some notes of sous bois. No trace of the dreaded "Green Meanies" in this wine! 2007 Maison Joseph Drouhin Côte-de-Nuits-Villages Top Pick!
2007 Maison Joseph Drouhin Côte-de-Nuits-Villages

This has lovely fruit, and lots of charm. This is one of the real values in Burgundy today. This appellation is common to a number of villages, all situated in the Côte de Nuits region : Brochon, Fixin, Premeaux-Prissey, Corgoloin, Comblanchien. It is an interesting wine combining the different characteristics of the various "terroirs" : fairly soft and rich wines in the South to more tannic wines with a strong structure in the North. Pinot Noir is the only grape variety used for this appellation.

This delightful sparkling wine, made in Burgundy, in the traditional Champagne method, is composed of the traditional champagne varietals, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. 90-92 points Allen Meadows' Burghound: "Very mild reduction can't begin to suppress the elegant, airy and refined extract of red pinot fruit nose that merges seamlessly into rich and relatively full flavors that possess a supple mid-palate that firms up moderately on the sappy and mouth coating finish. This is pretty rather than truly profound though if it can add a bit more depth with time in bottle, that may change. For the moment however, this appears to possess very good to excellent potential." I didn't find the reductive notes that Burghound notic... Read More »

Fine, lingering aftertaste." (Bruce Sanderson, Web Only, 03/08) K&L's notes: This charming Pinot Noir comes from the village of Marsannay. This has a heady bouquet redolent of aged Parmigiano-Reggiano, with an undercurrent of lime and caramel that carry over to the palate. 2006 Bonneau du Martray Grand Cru Corton-Charlemagne (Was $154.99)
2006 Bonneau du Martray Grand Cru Corton-Charlemagne (Was $154.99)

94 points and one the Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2009: "A whiff of chalk dust, along with a vanilla note, introduces this intense white. Flavors of peach, grapefruit and oak spice persist through the finish, with a mineral streak. Powerful and balanced, with a lingering aftertaste." 94 points from Allen Meadows: "The '06 is more obviously riper than the '07 with a complex, ripe and elegant mix of green apple, spice and minerality that complements perfectly the round, rich, detailed and stony flavors that possess ample mid-palate fat and superb dep... 2005 Domaine Gerard Seguin Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Craipillot"
2005 Domaine Gerard Seguin Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Craipillot"

The Craipillot vineyard lies just below Lavaux St. Jacques, and next to Champonnet. Clive Coates calls it 'the obscure (I have never seen an example) Craipillot'. Well, here is a rare chance to try this vineyard! The vines are from 75 to 100 years old, and the wine clearly reflects this. Focused, balanced and made in an entirely elegant style, this has a pretty cherry and strawberry nose. In contrast to some Gevreys which are highly extracted and dark, with fierce tannis, this is delicate, full of finesse and has a lovely finish and great integrity.

2007 Domaine Matrot Meursault "Chevalières" (375ml)
2007 Domaine Matrot Meursault "Chevalières" (375ml)

Chevalières is a single vineyard (lieu dit) Meursault which is always a bit softer and more open than their regular Meursault. Like all of their wines, it sees no new oak, but often gets a bit of one year old oak to help soften it a bit earlier. This is from a single vineyard, located high on the hill above the village in a bit cooler growing area, next to Meursault Tessons. It is one of the better sites among all the village-level vineyards in Meursault. 90(+?) points Stephen Tanzer: "Bright, pale yellow. Aromas of yellow peach, lime blossom and sto... Read More »

2001 Domaine Valette Pouilly-Fuissé "Clos Reyssie Reserve Particuliere" ($78 Elsewhere)
2001 Domaine Valette Pouilly-Fuissé "Clos Reyssie Reserve Particuliere" ($78 Elsewhere)

93 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Longtime readers know that the Valettes are committed to the long-term barrel aging of their top wines, so they won't be surprised to learn that the 2001 Pouilly-Fuisse Clos Reyssie Reserve Particuliere was bottled in December, 2005 after 48 months in barrel. Its nuanced nose reveals fresh minerals, hints of butterscotch, notes of citrus juices, as well as a traces of rancio, the French term for the aromas of an aged wine. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated, and satin-textured, this fascinating wine offers ... Read More »

2007 Antonin Rodet Bourgogne Pinot Noir
2007 Antonin Rodet Bourgogne Pinot Noir

This fresh and unoaked Pinot Noir displays a deep and intense ruby-red color with purplish tints. Pure with aromas of black cherry, chocolate and licorice lead to palate impression of some structure with flavors of ripe pie cherries. The tannins are fresh and lively. Coming from 2007, it is lighter in character and fresh.

2007 Larochette-Manciat Mâcon-Morizottes
2007 Larochette-Manciat Mâcon-Morizottes

This family domaine produces some of the finest 'Grands vins de Terroir' in Chaintre (pop. 250) since five generations. Marie-Pierre and Olivier Larochette took over the family estate in 1992 and finished their new cellar in 1999. The manual harvest on the 7 hectares of the domain, traditional Burgundian winemaking techniques in Oak barrels, the elevage on 'lies' followed by 'batonnage' and the latest harvest possible brings a rare, complex, powerful and elegant Macon. This is how Chardonnay should taste. The wine is delicate in the best sense of the wor... Read More »
