90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The unoaked 2008 Punto Final Clasico contains 97% Malbec and 3% Cabernet Franc aged for 10 months in stainless steel. It was sourced from own-rooted vineyards over 50 years of age. Made in a late-harvest style, this deep purple-colored wine reveals a nose of spice box, incense, and black cherry. Layered and rich on the palate, it conceals some ripe underlying tannin that should allow the wine to provide pleasure over the next 4 years. It is an amazing fruit bomb for $10!" 91 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Monteviejo's entry level wine is Festivo, a 100% Malbec aged for 6 months in new French oak. The 2004 Festivo is dark crimson-colored with a fragrant nose of mineral, spice box, blueberry, and black cherry. Medium-bodied, it is plush on the palate with plenty of ripe, forward fruit, light tannin, and a sense of elegance. It can be enjoyed now and over the next 5 years. It is an outstanding value. Bodega Monteviejo, owned by Catherine Pere-Verge (also the proprietor of Pomerol's Le Gay), is located at the fo... Read More »

This is the tastiest Cabernet Sauvignon I have yet to taste from Argentina, and certainly one of the best cabs I've tasted from anywhere all year. Roberto Rodriguez Canal, part time San Francisco resident, is one of the partners in Platense wines, the company who produces Aleph and brings it to market. According to Roberto: "We do not produce wine to please mass demand. Our wines are not over extracted and definitely not over oaked, we produce limited quantity of wine with its own character." The Aleph name is a tribute to a short story penned by the... Read More »

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2006 Punto Final Reserva contains 99% Malbec and 1% Cabernet Franc aged for 10 months in French oak. It, too, was sourced from vineyards over 50 years of age but with lower yields. Opaque purple-colored, it offers up a fragrant bouquet of cedar, scorched earth, lavender, and black cherry. Layered, dense, and concentrated, it has tons of savory black fruit, spice notes, and excellent balance. This lengthy effort can be enjoyed now but will evolve in the bottle for 2-3 years." Many of you have been loyally following this wine, our best selling wine in store history, since we first carried the 2006 vintage (which garnered an award for Wine Enthusiast's top wine of the year in 2007). Well, having just tasted the 2008 vintage, I'm happy to report that this wine continues to over-deliver in the quality to price ratio, or QPR department (please excuse the industry jargon). The '08 Toso leads with an enticing, foresty, blackberry and cherry fruited nose. With a bit of exposure to air, a characteristic whiff of wood smoke emerges,... Read More »

The classic Malbec aromas of ripe plum and violets are evident in the nose, with hints of vanilla. The beauty of the Malbec in Argentina is its ability to combine a rich, weighty mouth feel with a soft silkiness normally associated with lighter wines. Elsa Malbec takes the promise of the nose through to the palate, with pleasing fruit that mimics the aroma. The soft, supple palate leads to a lingering finish.

90 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2008 Malbec is a glass-coating purple color with a striking perfume of violets, black cherry, and black raspberry. Exhibiting surprising complexity for its price category, the wine has gobs of fruit, savory flavors, and excellent depth and length. It is an outstanding value for drinking over the next 3-4 years. Alberto Antonini (think Altos Las Hormigas) is a consultant at Maipe which in and of itself is an indicator that the winery is focused on quality." (12/08) The largest selling wine in the history... 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Intense, saturated and well balanced, with touches of motor oil, earth and herbs on the nose. The palate is flush and mouthfilling, with proper tannic bite, fine acidity and stylish flavors of blackberry and raspberry." (07/09) Produced from all estate fruit, carefully harvested and vinified only with native yeasts, the 2007 Lagarde Malbec just might be the most serious and well structured Malbec under $15 that we have featured all year. Built up by the Catena family in Argentina, Alamos produces terrific value wines year in, year out. This year, the Chardonnay really stands out. Full-bodied, red apple and pear fruit fill the mouth, along with some bright yellow stone fruit and just a hint of toffee from brief oak aging adding some richness and texture. The wine has a truly fresh flavor profile, and would work as a perfect house white for chardonnay drinkers, as well as a perfect bridge wine for those who prefer crisper, brighter, chardonnay while their companions perhaps favor richer... Torrontes is a wine of pleasing fruit intensity both in the nose and on the palate. Clean refreshing aromas with hints of spice, fruit, and honey that lead to similar flavors on the palate, with good natural acidity and a clean refreshing finish. This variety is blessed with the ability to develop these nice aromas and flavors at relatively low sugars which translates into better balance for a light- medium bodied white wine.

90 points and a Smart Buy, Wine Spectator: "Quite ripe and toasty, with a hefty dose of mocha and coffee laid over the fleshy dark plum, currant and blackberry fruit. This stays toasty through the finish, but it's well-integrated, with the fruit an equal match. Drink now through 2010." Produced from 100% malbec sourced from various top sites in the Mendoza region of Argentina, Festivo could be called the winery’s entry-level bottling, but there is nothing at all "entry" about it. The wine is aged for 11 months, two-thirds in 100% new French oak and the balance in vat and bottled without fining or filtration. At this early stage, this is as good a young Mendoza Malbec as I've ever tasted from this winery. Initially a bit shy aromatically, the palate impression sings another tune. Delicious, pure purple fruit develops added intensity with exposure to air. Also present is the trademark silken mouthfeel and liquid minerality. Just a delicious wine, and always a favorite among our staff. Maybe the best Broquel Malbec to date." (11/09) And, according to Wine Spectator: "Racy dark raspberry ganache and boysenberry notes are laced with fig cake and graphite. Toasty, but stays fresh. The 2007 Terrazas Malbec hails from a vineyard at about 3500 feet, in a Mendoza region known as Lujan de Cuyo. It is 100% malbec from 30-year-old vines. It was aged for about six months in 70% French and 30% American oak. It is bright red and purple tinted in the glass. This wine has a beautiful reddish/purple color as most good Malbecs do. The aromas are a mix of fresh crushed cherries and toasty/smoky oak-just enough to frame the exuberant fruit. This is perhaps the most traditionally made red wine in Argentina. It's awesome, I love it, our staff loves it, and I suspect many of you looking for something different from Argentina might love it as well. A blend of 45% Malbec, 35% Merlot and 20% Cabernet, this is a savory, red fruited wine, more reminiscent of the South of France than south of the equator. By now no one is surprised to see yet another amazing value Argentinean Malbec, but for $6.99 this is just ridiculous. Doña Paula is the largest landowner in the Lujan de Cuyo sub-zone of Mendoza, and they use their immense vineyard holdings to great advantage in crafting what is undoubtedly the best value Malbec around. The Spanish words, "La Yunta" signify a pair puling together for a common cause. This unique project was created in 2001 by Kirk Ermisch and winemaking friends as a way of showing the world the excellence and crisp, lively balance of the Torrontés grape. The Torrontés grape was first brought to Argentina in the late 1800's by Spanish immigrants. While most Argentine Torrontés is produced in La Salta, La Rioja's more moderate climate produces a Torrontés that is much more "focused" on the palate and considerably drier than most.
