This years Allram liter is again packaged with the ever popular crown cap and is a fantastic start if you have never experienced Gruner Veltliner. The aromatics are full of pepper and spice with hints of citrus zest and earthy nuances of fresh pea shoots and lentil. A wonderfully fresh and vibrant wine that is snappy but with just the right amount of texture to let the juicy, mouthwatering acid structure take you home! Will get better over the next two to three years….

Club Price: $7.99When it comes to killer value-priced Gruners like this one, more is definitely more. You will find that a liter of this in your fridge goes much much quicker than anticipated! This very dry, peppery white rings in at just 12.5% abv, and it is a cool, clean, bracing quaff with a spicy finish and notes of green melon and grapefruit. Just what a white wine should be, and nothing more.

Harvested from vines that range in age from 7 to 34 years old, this Zweigelt is fruity and elegant, with soft tannins. It was ripened after the fermentation, with the biological acids naturally dismantling as it aged in large oak barrels. This way it was able to develop beautifully, with the natural fruit in the wine coming very much to the foreground.

The 2008 Axpoint shows wonderful aromatics with \exotic echoes and a cloud of spice that permeates the wine. Very mineraly, elegant and well-bred. In every way, a picture-perfect example of Federspiel!

Smoky undertones inextricably intertwined with the typical mixture of garden herbs, subtle and refined, mid to full-bodied with inklings of yellow fruits. Tangy, spicy primary aromas with a pleasant tartness to the finish. So much for so darn little! Young vineyards (under 20 years) of the former Steiner Allerheilgenstiftung are selected for this classical Grüner Veltliner.

There is something crazily appealing about this wine. Maybe it's the squat green blue container with a twist-off cap, the glass bottle equivalent of your favorite uncle Herb. Or perhaps it is the price: less than $13 for a whole liter of wine. Then again, there is the wine itself: bright, herbaceaous, clean and so very very versatile. Keep one in your fridge for last minute dinner guests, or for yourself. It goes with anything--spicy food, fried food, or no food at all!

Endlessly quaffable, the Kalmuck Grüner Veltliner from Austria's Wachau region shows wildflower aromas, lively and animating balance of fruit and acidity and Grüner's characteristic white pepper note.

We are going out on a limb with this one, knowing there are many refreshing sparklers in the store right now. But this sparkling wine made from… you guessed it, Apples!... deserves special mention. First, it was made by perhaps the world’s most respected distiller of fruit-based spirits, Hans Reisetbauer. It was made with lovingly tended heirloom apples in the bucolic orchard land of Austria, with all the care that goes into high quality Champagne. Twice fermented, and showing an unbelievably attractive foaminess when popped, this goes down so effortless... Read More »

93 points Wine Spectator: "Focused and refined, with concentrated flavors of melon, pear, peach and spice. There’s also impressive structure, with a finish filled with white chocolate and cream." K&L's notes - Ice Wine comes in limited quantities, and Gruner Veltliner Ice Wines are even more rare. Vintner Manfred Weiss likes to use Gruner Veltliner grapes as they are less likely to be affected by botrytis, resulting in grapes are still mostly “clean” when the first cold night arrives at the end of the harvest. This lends itself of a wine with clear fruit... Read More »

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2006 Ried Vogelsang, a blend of Pinot Blanc, Furmint, Welschriesling, and Muskateller, exudes ripe peach and pineapple with spicy, musky, animal, and almost sweaty notes. Its oily richness of texture and ripeness of fruit are enhanced by a perfectly-judged hint of sweetness, yet in finishing this turns unexpectedly refreshing and practically delicate, bitter fruit pit and saline notes adding interest and extending its length. The more you return to the glass, the more fascinating this wine becomes, and I am s... Read More »

This is one of the great mixing agents now available. All you need is a little gin and a lemon, and you've got a great cocktail. Among the native wildflowers found in the Alps are the Queen Charlotte and March Violets. Elegant in its simplicity, this authentic Crème de Violette captures their fragrance, vibrant colors, and taste. Enjoy this liqueur in classic cocktails such as the Blue Moon or Aviation, or as an ingredient in continental cuisine.

93 points Wine & Spirits: "This wine shows the sleek, finely detailed character common to the vintage's top wines, with lively flavors of white peach, orange peel and lime flavors. It takes its time to open in the glass, bound by a tense, taut core of energy, slowly revealing a floral and expansively fragrant length." (04/09) 92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Medium green-yellow. Peach, apricot, lichee and blossom honey give the nose and mouth of this wine a rather exotic impression. David Schildknecht, the Austrian specialist for Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, describes Roland Velich and his Moric wines this way: "Roland Velich is no longer working with his brother Heinz at the family estate in Apetlon, but is pursuing his own dream, working with old vines in the heart of "Blaufrankisch country", Mittelburgenland, specifically Lutzmannsburg and Neckenmarkt. (Only his winery is located in Grosshoflein.) His are wines in a style you will not encounter anywhere else in Austria: Blaufrankisch vinified as if it were Grand Cru Burgundy, a... Read More »

St Laurent is a fairly rare Austrian grape varietal. It originated as a volunteer clone from Pinot Noir plants Burgundian monks brought into the country centuries ago. Juris is one of the top Austrian wine makers of this exquisite grape and their Selection 2007 is yet another good example of their craftsmanship. The wine shows the typical cherry notes of a good St. Laurent, has a medium body, and pairs very well with many types of food, grilled fish and braised meats alike. Testament to this is the fact that this wine was poured by the glass simultaneous... Read More »

(04/09) According to Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Muskateller-like aromas of pungent sage, lemon zest, and tart black fruit skins mark the 2007 Riesling Gobelsburger, which is all about invigoration and refreshment right through to its faintly bitter end. According to importer Terry Theise: "This may be the best wine I’ve tasted from this fascinating variety, which is in essence a GrüVe cousin, making a fuller-bodied wine that’s sometimes more bell-peppery and sometimes muskier young RotVe tastes like 5-year-old GrüVe. These are 50-year-old vines, and the wine is replete with 'sweet' aromas leading to a palate that’s playful, herbal and minty and full of charm; salty, leafy, not as soy-like as they sometimes are, but more scintillating than any I’ve ever had."

Vines ranging from 16-25 years of age planted in sandy gravel with a high content of quartz. Hand picked in September of 2007 and aged for half a year in old wooden casks. Deep garnet in color, spicy nose, big ol' berry-patch, wild game highlights like a Cote Chalonnaise pinot noir, biting black-cherry attack on the palate, rich and undulant texture. Kuebelbier is brewed according to the historic beer style: Zwickelbier. Zwickelbier comes from the Franconia region in Germany and dates back beyond the Middle Ages. The name “Zwickelbier” stems from the sampling mug (”Zwickel” in German) mounted at the outside of the tank for assessing the brew’s progress during fermentation. The Zwickelbier style is an unfiltered lager beer (Bottom-fermenting) that traditionally is served as soon as fermentation is complete. Kuebelbier is brewed as a pilsner and is then bottled directly from the cellars without any fil... Read More »
