2014 Erste e Neue Lagrein Alto Adige Rosato

Erste e Neue is a highly revered co-op located high up in the Mediterranean Alps in the Alto Adige region of Northeast Italy, where it is primarily famous for producing racy, refreshing, and mineral-driven white wines from the varietals that thrive there. Lagrein is a relatively rare red grape indigenous to Alto Adige which is the offspring of the ancient variety Teroldego. The Oxford Companion to wine describes Lagrein as producing a "fragrant and sturdy" rosato, and we couldn't agree more.

2014 Erste e Neue Pinot Bianco

Italy known for good large, co-operative wineries. (A few good co-ops exist in other regions, but not lots of them in one region.) This top-notch wine comes from the co-op Erste + Neue, which is right in the center of Caldaro, one of the small towns on the "Wine Road" south of Bolzano. They make the range of white wines that you would expect, Sauvignon, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris (and an excellent Müller Thurgau). Gerhard Sanin, the enologist for E+N, favors a bright, restrained winemaking style that really allows this place and these varieties to shine.

2004 Rotaliana Teroldego "Clesurae" (Previously $26)

Wine Spectator: "Full, soft and fruity, with lots of wild raspberry and blackberry aromas and flavors and a soft texture." (6/2007) K&L Notes: The Teroldego wine is an indigenous varietal of Trentino which finds its ideal environment in the Piana Rotaliana. Teroldego seems to derive from "Tiroler Gold," the name that indicated this wine at the Court of Vienna under the Austro-Hungarian empire. From this name came the Tiroldico and finally Teroldego. Among the Trentino wines it is certainly the most famous and rightfully called the royal wine of Trentino.

2013 Convento Muri-Gries Pinot Nero (Previously $30.00)

Muri-Gries Blauburgunder, a.k.a. Pinot Nero, a.k.a. Pinot Noir that looks like Dorothy's ruby slippers shimmering in the glass. It's as enchanting as those special shoes, too, with its crunchy, red-fruited bouquet, herbaceous-earthy palate, and punchy acidic backbone. The Muri-Gries vineyards are on an ideal southeast-facing slope where the soils are calcareous, ideal for racy Pinot Noir. The wine is fermented in stainless steel and then put into large Slavonian oak casks of 30hl to 50hl--you could fit the juice from 13 of California’s standard wine barr... Read More »

2012 Abtei Muri Sudtirol "Weiss" (Super Bianco) (Previously $30)

The 2012 Abtei Muri Sudtirol "Weiss" is a blend of 70% Pinot Bianco and 30% Pinot Grigio grown in the village of Appiano/Eppan in a southeast facing vineyard with predominantly gravelly limestone soils at elevations from 1500 to over 2000 feet, with vines aged 20-30 years. The wines from this area exhibit a persistent saltiness to go along with the excellent acidic balance. Winemaker Christian Werth ferments in stainless steel and then ages it for 15 months in large wooden casks with a weekly lees stirring. This wine can age easily for another 5-8 year... Read More »

2011 Cantina Terlan "Porphyr" Lagrein Riserva

97 points James Suckling: "Glass-staining, with plum, hints of anise, red flowers, gravel and dark olive. Layered, complex and hard to resist. Full-bodied. Perfectly integrated, melted tannins. A real triumph. Greatest Lagrein out there. Drink now." (10/2014) K&L Notes: #10 James Suckling's Top 100 Italian Wines of 2014; November 11th, 2014. Named for the bedrock on which the vineyards stand, this Prophyr bottling is 100% Lagrein selected from three different parcels of vineyard which are all nearly 100 years old. The grapes were manually harvested and again hand-sorted before being slowly fe... Read More »

2010 Cantina Terlan "Gries" Lagrein

This comes from a small suburb of Bolzano called Gries, where the alluvial soils are perfectly suited to Lagrein--a native grape that has been grown in the region since at least 1379. The fruit is manually harvested, slowly fermented in stainless and finished in mostly large wooden barrels (70%) and barriques (one-third new). Always a favorite, this cool climate red is ink-dark and packed with lifted dark berry fruit, fine tannins and exotic spice. It's particularly delicious with game, offal and aged cheeses.

2011 Cantina Terlan "Vorberg" Pinot Bianco Riserva 3.0L

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of my favorite white wines from Northern Italy, the 2011 Alto Adige Pinot Bianco Riserva Vorberg is dazzling and impressive on both the nose and in the mouth. It offers a full package of varietal purity with aromas of pear, quince, Golden Delicious apple and honeysuckle. Aged 12 months in large oak casks, it imparts a seductively rich and creamy texture on the long finish. This beauty promises to age ten years or more and will develop more mineral nuances as it continues its bottle evolution. (ML)" (10/2014) K&L Notes: From Alto Adige, here is a Pinot Bianco that... 2008 Foradori Granato Vigneti delle Dolomiti

93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep ruby. Bright, sappy aromas of red and black berries, flowers, cracked black pepper, vanilla and cinnamon. Sweet, supple and wonderfully dense, with terrific lift to its creamy, palate-saturating blueberry, blackberry and herbal flavors. The long finish features creamy yet vibrant berry and aromatic spice notes and very polished tannins. One of the finest and best balanced Granato bottlings in memory." (3/2012)93 points Wine Spectator: "This rich red offers fine cut and an overall sense of finesse. A smoky, mineral-tinged undertow adds density through the layered flavors of wil ...Read More »
