2005 Latour-Martillac, Pessac-Léognan

Jancis Robinson: "Very thick and sweet and a bit furry. Lacks freshness though certainly opulent. (16/20 points)" (2/2009) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A deep ruby/purple-tinged color is followed by aromas of lead pencil shavings, smoke, toasty oak, and sweet black cherries and currants in this medium-bodied Pessac-Leognan. It possesses good acidity, excellent concentration, and a firm, slightly austere, astringent finish. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2025. (RP)" (4/2008) Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Medium red-ruby. Full-blown aromas of plum, mocha, hot stones, camphor and nutty, spicy oak, along with a whiff of leather. 2005 Guiraud, Sauternes Top Pick!
2005 Guiraud, Sauternes

97 points James Suckling: "This appears to be the synthesis of the fabulous 2001 and 2003. It shows wonderful aromas of botrytis spice, honey and citrus rind. Lots of fruit with a tropical fruit undertone of mango and papaya on the palate. Intense finish. Too excellent not to drink." (7/2013)97 points Wine Spectator: "**Highly Recommended and #4 on Top 100 of 2008** Delivers lots of botrytis spice, with lemon tart and cooked apple. Full-bodied, with loads of cream and vanilla and an intense tropical fruit and honey aftertaste. Long and viscous, with a layered and beautiful spicy finish. Hard not to drink it ...Read More »

2005 Coufran, Haut-Médoc

91-93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Barrel sample. If you're looking for great, ripe black currant fruits, this is where to come. The wine is full and hugely fruity, but it still manages a good Bordeaux sense of proportion." (6/2006) James Halliday: "Smokiness dominates the nose at the moment but there’s still evidence of fresh and aromatic cassis underneath. Rich and yet juicy...Drink 2010-2016." (6/2007) Jancis Robinson: "Quite a rich nose and some farmyard elements. Solid and straightforward. Quite chewy tannins at present." 2005 Balestard La Tonnelle, St-Emilion Top Pick!
2005 Balestard La Tonnelle, St-Emilion

Jancis Robinson: "Fine perfume, becoming more meaty. Really moreish, dry and quite firm. Perhaps a little more structure than fruit." (11/2009) Wine & Spirits: "The aroma is complex and layered with rich cherries and smoky oak tones. This is a smooth-textured, traditional St-Emilion. A bit of bottling sulfur will dissipate as the wine ages, and the tannins will soften up for a steak." (10/2008) Wine Spectator: "Vanilla, licorice and violet aromas follow through to a medium-to-full body, with silky tannins and a medium finish. (Web-2008)" K&L Notes: Wow! 2005 Potensac, Médoc

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "This wine has fine tannins that are relatively soft, with good acidity and dryness. It's not powerful, but with its fine black currant flavor and ripe fruit it shows great style." (6/1/2006) 90 points Robert Parker: "A superb value for Jean-Hubert Delon, the 2005 Potensac has a deep ruby/purple color, a classic bouquet of sweet red and black fruits, as well as gorgeous texture and purity. Medium-bodied and concentrated, this wine behaves like a Medoc cru classe. Moreover, it will age very well for 10-15 years. Very impressive... Read More »

2005 Langoa-Barton, St-Julien

92 points Wine & Spirits: "This vintage emphasizes dark chocolate and French roast coffee scents. Its luscious cherry flavors give a soft, round impression in the middle, then it lightens up a little, needing time for the flavors to extend. The fineness of Langoa is there, and should be more apparent in ten years' time." (10/2008)92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Big, ripe, almost exotic, this has developed impressively over the past 18 months. Its tannins are certainly huge, but so is the fruit, warm, rich and enticing. Very powered, it thrusts black currants and acidity right up front." (6/2008)92 points Wine Spectator: "Wonderful aromas of ...Read More »

2005 Valandraud, St-Emilion (Previously $400) Top Pick!
2005 Valandraud, St-Emilion (Previously $400)

97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This may be the most prodigious wine Jean-Luc Thunevin and his partner Murielle Andraud have made to date. Inky purple to the rim at age ten, this wine’s explosive aromatics include espresso, chocolate, plum, blackberry and cassis. The oak is well-hidden behind an extravagant, full-bodied, multi-layered palate. Stunningly pure, super-intense and just beginning to move into middle adolescence, the “Bad Boy” of Bordeaux has produced a legend in 2005. This is a big wine, but it still preserves a good sense of proportion." (6/2006)90 points Connoisseurs Guide: "**One Star** Despite the fact that this wine is 40% Merlot, it comes equipped with tannins more reminiscent of St. Estephe than anywhere else in Bordeaux. It inner pieces are quite lovely, however, and if one is willing to take the decade-long risk that the currant and wild flower character of its aromas and underlying flavors will emerge fully with time, then this wine o ...Read More »

2005 Hosanna, Pomerol

98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is an absolutely spectacular effort from Christian Moueix’s tiny jewel in Pomerol – Hosanna. An extraordinary nose of blue and black fruits, floral notes, licorice, and truffle soars from the glass of this dense purple wine. A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, this wine often has the most complex set of aromatics of any Pomerol. 2005 Pichon-Baron, Pauillac

Now bottled and shipped, it has the unremitting tannic power of the vintage, balanced by unrelenting purity of fruit that somehow manages to anesthetize the monstrous tannin, to soften the extremely dry, mineral-bound finish into a caress. The wine may be bombastic, but it's also succulent and as sweet as a ripe black raspberry. It's easy to imagine this wine 50 years from now, in impeccable condition." Consume it over the next 5-6 years. (RP)" (8/2008) Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright, deep red. Wild aromas of black raspberry, mocha and truffle. Lush and sweet if a bit simple, with flavors of sweet raspberry, mocha and truffle. Finishes with plenty of tannic spine, but the tannins arrive late." A stunningly opulent wine with a dense purple color, the 2005 possesses a beautiful perfume of spring flowers, blueberries, blackberries, creosote, and graphite, full body, silky but noticeable tannins, a layered mouthfeel, and a stunning, 45+-second finish. It needs at least another five years." (5/2013)96 points Wine & Spirits: "There's a relaxed feel to this wine. Cazes's team can dress Lynch-Bages in the black-tie formality of a first growth, but the wine is still lovely-a touch of gaminess makes it friendly rather than ponderous. At this fabulous terroir just south of Mouton-Rothschild, Tesseron has made major investments, and instituted incredibly severe selections in both the vineyard and winery. The result is a succession of extraordinary wines. Medium to full-bodied with good purity, strong tannins, and undeniable elegance, it reveals a character not dissimilar from its renowned sibling, Lafite-Rothschild... Over recent vintages, this wine has been among the most concentrated and formidably tannic and backward made in Bordeaux. Old timers who remember the 1945 Larcis Ducasse will attest to how great this cuvee can be. Sadly, fewer than 3,000 cases were produced of the 2005, a blend of 78% Merlot and the rest primarily Cabernet Franc with a small dollop of Cabernet Sauvignon. This is a moderately large vineyard (37 acres) for the area, and the blend tends to be 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. A black/purple color is ac ...Read More »

2005 Pavillon Rouge, Margaux

89-92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright ruby-red. Very pure aromas of blackberry, cassis, violet and spicy oak. Very ripe and rich in the mouth, with a much more pliant texture than the grand vin Quite chewy on the back end, finishing with broad, sweet tannins and a touch of warmth. This has alcohol in the 14% range, or a full point higher than Chateau Margaux's 13%." (6/2006)92 points Wine Enthusiast: "All about red fruits, this is a celebration of ripe Merlot and Cabernet. It is touched with wood, but the flavors are of lively acidity, red berries, just showing some bitter chocolate. And to finish, more freshness ...Read More »

2005 La Confession, St-Emilion

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Opaque purple, with a sweet blue and blackberry perfume intertwined with licorice and graphite, the 2005 La Confession exhibits massive concentration and extraction, but this full-bodied wine pulls back from being over-the-top because of intrinsic freshness and admirable purity. It is a brilliant effort from the young Janouiex, but it needs some cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2028" (4/2008) Wine Spectator: "Very floral and fruity, with hints of blackberry and flowers. Medium- to full-bodied, with firm tannins and a good density of fruit. Long and racy. A little rese ...Read More »

2005 Joanin Bécot, Côtes de Castillon

91 points Wine Enthusiast: "A powerful example of modern Bordeaux with its blackberry-packed flavors, ripe tannins and dark, solid, concentrated fruit. Spice, wood aromas and pepper complete this dense wine." (6/2008)90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Another sleeper of the vintage, this blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc emerges from the limestone soils outside St.-Emilion. An inky/purple color is accompanied by stunningly flamboyant aromas of melted licorice, white chocolate, raspberries, and black currants. Full-bodied, layered, gorgeously pure, and well above its official pedigree, this 2005 Joanin-Becot ...Read More »

2005 Brane-Cantenac, Margaux (1.5L)
Bid on this magnum of 2005 Brane-Cantenac, Margaux (1.5L) (95WE, 94RP, 92WS). Robert Parker: "This is the finest Brane-Cantenac I have tasted in over thirty years. Unusually perfumed and already approachable (atypical for most 2005 Medocs), it reveals a deep plum/purple color as well as a stunningly flamboyant bouquet of smoked herbs, licorice, camphor, black cherries, currants, and notions of plums and blackberries. Elegant with silky tannin and medium body, it is clearly a classic statement on the Margaux appellation. While not a powerhouse, it is beautifully concentrated, stunningly balanced, and surprisingly forward."

2005 Pontet-Canet, Pauillac (1.5L)

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The work that Alfred Tesseron and his winemaking team have done at this estate since 1994 is remarkable. At this fabulous terroir just south of Mouton-Rothschild, Tesseron has made major investments, and instituted incredibly severe selections in both the vineyard and winery. The result is a succession of extraordinary wines... Inky/black-colored with a classic Pauillac perfume of licorice, black currant liqueur, graphite, cedar, and spice box, it is full-bodied, with magnificent concentration, formidable tannins, and an Arnold Schwartzenegger-like struc ...Read More »

Velvety and attractive, yet powerful and structured." (3/2008)93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Proprietor Eric Prissette has fashioned a sensational 2005 with the assistance of consultant Stephane Derenoncourt. It boasts a deep purple color as well as a perfume of charcoal, smoked herbs, crushed rocks, blackberries, ripe cherries, and espresso beans. Full-bodied, with loads of velvety tannins, yet refined and caressing in every way. A beautiful, balanced red. The best young wine ever from this producer. Best after 2017." (3/2008)96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "With the son of the Nicolas family, Valmy, taking over and ratcheting up the selection process as well as the quality, La Conseillante appears poised to challenge its closest neighbor, l’Evangile, as the finest estate on the border of the sector of Pomerol facing Cheval Bla ...Read More »
