2009 Ridge Santa Cruz Mountains Tasting Lot

Of the 2009 Ridge "Klein" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon,Robert Parker's Wine Advocate writes: "Ridge’s 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Klein wraps around the palate with dark red cherries, anise, flowers and grilled herbs. This is an attractive, fleshy Cabernet with plenty of vibrant fruit. Interestingly, the Klein Cabernet shows quite a bit more varietal nuance than the Merlot, which is also from Jimsomare ranch. Compared to the Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, the Klein has more structure and less immediate appeal, although that won’t be much of an issue in the next few years. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029. This fresh, beautifully fruited, medium to full-bodied, rich wine should drink well for 10-12 years. Production from this four-acre vineyard is generally around 1,000 cases. (RP)" (12/2014)

2006 Quilceda Creek Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2006 Quilceda Creek Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (98WE, 96RP, 95ST, 94WS). Wine Enthusiast: "The 2006 flagship Cabernet from Quilceda Creek is a massive wine that has just begun to emerge from its slumber. When first released the wine seemed to have entered a dumb phase, but six months later it responds to decanting and shows its muscle. Fruit flavors of black, brandied cherries, cassis and bourbon-soaked plums are wrapped in generous, layered oak. The wine is dusty, smoky, laced with streaks of licorice and brightened with sharp acids. It continues to expand further in the glass, adding flesh and spice to its frame, with a cedar/cigar box finish." (03/2010)

Wine Enthusiast: "The Camaspelo blend is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot, and it shows a riot of juicy cranberry, raspberry, blueberry and black cherry flavors in a rambunctious display of power. Full, round and balanced, it offers hints of cedar, earth and coffee that extend onto the lush, complex, age-worthy finish. " (03/2013)

Robert Parker writes: "Talk about coming out with a Big Bang! Stuart Sloan, the Seattle businessman, has hit both gold and home runs with his extraordinary vineyard perched high on a hill above the renowned restaurant/hotel complex of Auberge du Soleil. A 60-acre estate only partially planted in vines, with David Abreu handling the viticulture and Martha Levy (wife of Harlan Estates’ Bob Levy) making the wine, this is as impressive a new operation as I have ever witnessed." 1986 Margaux, Margaux
Bid on this bottle of 1986 Margaux, Margaux (98AG, 98RP, 93WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A magnificent example of Chateau Margaux and one of the most tannic, backward Margauxs of the last 50 years, the 1986 continues to evolve at a glacial pace. The color is still a dense ruby/purple with just a hint of lightening at the rim. With several hours of aeration, the aromatics become striking, with notes of smoke, toast, creme de cassis, mineral, and white flowers. Very full-bodied, with high but sweet tannin, great purity, and a very masculine, full-bodied style, this wine should prove nearly immortal in terms of its aging potential. It is beginning to budge from its infantile stage and approach adolescence. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2050. Last tasted, 12/02. (RP)" (01/2003)

2009 Domaine Hubert Lignier Morey-St-Denis 1er Cru Vieilles Vignes
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2009 Domaine Hubert Lignier Morey-St-Denis 1er Cru Vieilles Vignes ((92-94RP), 90JS, 90ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Morey St. Denis Vieilles Vignes is a gorgeous, striking wine. It exhibits notable density in a rich, yet weightless expression of fruit that is hard to fully capture with words. The bright red fruit blossoms on the palate with tons of fragrance and elegance, building nicely to the long, intense finish. The Vieilles Vignes is made from parcels in Faconnieres and Chenevery planted in 1936 on soils similar to those found in Clos de la Roche. Yields here are typically around 20-25 hectoliters, with a high presence of shot berries. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029. " (05/2011)

1996 Pichon-Baron, Pauillac
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1996 Pichon-Baron, Pauillac (91RP, 90ST, 90WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Pichon Longueville Baron's 1996 has turned out to be even better than I thought from cask. The high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend (about 80%) resulted in a wine that has put on weight in the bottle. An opaque purple color is accompanied by beautiful aromas of tobacco, new saddle leather, roasted coffee, and cassis. It is dense, medium to full-bodied, and backward, with moderately high tannin, but plenty of sweet fruit, glycerin, and extract to balance out the wine's structure. This well-endowed, classic Pauillac should be at its finest between 2006-2022." (04/1999)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2011 Chardonnay Belle Cote reveals classic notes of tropical fruits (pineapple, mango), decent acidity, and a full-bodied, plump, up-front mouthfeel. This vintage will evolve quickly and thus is best drunk over the next 3-4 years. (RP)" (12/2013)

Black fruits, licorice, gun metal and minerals on the nose, along with a hint of tobacco leaf. Very firm, dry and penetrating, with pure, nicely defined flavors of dark berries, bitter chocolate and licorice. This has less baby fat and obvious sweetness than the Coach Insignia but impressive purity and persistence." (06/2002)

2002 Spottswoode "Estate" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2002 Spottswoode "Estate" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (99RP, 92ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon is a glorious example of elegance combined with power, purity and richness. A compelling wine in all senses, it reveals a haunting bouquet of acacia flowers, raspberries, blueberries, black currants, graphite and pen ink. The sweetness of the tannins and medium to full-bodied, extraordinarily poised and breathtaking mouthfeel that builds incrementally is all about nobility and balance. It is an honor to taste this special wine. Drink it over the next 20-25 years. As I have always said, if there is a Chateau Margaux to be found in Napa Valley, it is Beth and Mary Novak’s iconic Spottswoode winery, situated on the back streets of St. Helena. (RP)" (06/2012)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The terrific 1999 (a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot) possesses a murky purple color as well as a sweet nose of vanilla, Asian spices, licorice, and blackberry/currant fruit. The wine is full-bodied, dense, and chewy, with moderately high tannin. This large-scaled, pure red will handsomely repay cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2020+." (08/2002)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Paradise Hills Vineyard (1,200 cases) reveals a chocolatey espresso roast note with mocha, blackberry and cassis, high tannins, but full body, superb concentration, purity, and an almost Graves-like scorched earth character. This wine needs 3-4 years of bottle age, and should last 25-30 years. (RP)" (12/2007)

Of the 2007 Copain "Kiser En Haut" Anderson Valley Pinot Noir,Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar writes: "Deep red. Powerful aromas of red berries and cherry skin are complicated by anise and dried rose nuances. Nervy raspberry and bitter cherry flavors show impressive depth, with silky tannins giving shape to the wine. A tangy note of blood orange comes up with air and carries through the long, impressively energetic finish. Guthrie told me that the pH is 3.28, which is extremely low for a New World Pinot and similar to some of the most energetic versions from New Zealand." (05/2009)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2010 Bedrock Wine Company "Heirloom" Sonoma Valley Red Wine (92RP, 91ST, 90WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2010 Bedrock Heirloom Wine Bedrock Vineyard is a hugely intriguing wine made from a blend of 60% Zinfandel, 25% Carignane and 15% comprised of 22 varieties that are interspersed throughout the vineyard. Dark black cherries, plums, graphite, mint, wild herbs and licorice are woven together in this gorgeous, finely sculpted wine. 2007 Lucia "Garys' Vineyard" Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2007 Lucia "Garys' Vineyard" Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir (95RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The outrageously sumptuous, complex 2007 Pinot Noir Garys’ Vineyard is a compelling example of Pinot Noir from the Santa Lucia Highlands. Ten to twelve percent whole clusters were used during fermentation, and the wine was aged in 50% new oak. Sumptuous aromas of kirsch, black raspberries, fresh mushrooms, and forest floor are very Burgundian as well as intense. In the mouth, the wine is full and beautifully concentrated with silky tannins and a long finish. (RP)" (08/2009)

2010 Paul Lato "Atticus - John Sebastiano Vineyard" Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2010 Paul Lato "Atticus - John Sebastiano Vineyard" Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir (93RP, 93ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A larger-scaled style of Pinot emerges in the 2010 Pinot Noir Atticus John Sebastiano Vineyard. This is a distinctly big, fruit-driven Pinot long on style and personality. The yields are extremely low in this site, and while the wine has fabulous concentration, it also lacks the finesse of the best wines in the lineup. Today, my impression is that the Atticus needs time to settle down a touch, although it will always retain some of its pure and, at times, rough-around-the-edges, enthusiasm. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016. (AG)" (08/2012)

This Pinot Noir is in a special place right now and comes from what is considered the best parcel in the Melville Vineyards. There are 435 cases of it. It should drink well for up to a decade. Musky aromas of chamomile, pear skin, anise and iodine, with suave floral and gingerbread notes emerging with aeration. Juicy and broad on entry, then a bit tighter in the middle, offering densely packed orchard fruit flavors and notes of smoke and honeysuckle. More powerful than the Horseshoe but no less animated. Complex, extravagantly rich, opulent, and flamboyant, this superb Syrah should drink well for 8-10 years. An artisanal winery run with meticulous attention to detail by Eric Sussman, Radio-Coteau continues to follow a fair pricing strategy for its high quality Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs, Syrahs, and Zinfandels. Has the intensity of material to wear its 100% new oak gracefully. Carrying a low 3.25 pH and moderate alcohol of 13.5%. 2010 Alban "Pandora" Edna Valley Rhone Blend
Bid on this bottle of 2010 Alban "Pandora" Edna Valley Rhone Blend (97AG, 93RP). Antonio Galloni: "Exotic, super-ripe and beguiling, the 2010 Grenache Pandora is utterly compelling. I don't think I have ever tasted a Grenache with this level of aromatic complexity and pure nuance. The Pandora is incredibly ripe, voluptuous and racy. Cherries in liqueur, exotic spices, wild flowers of all sorts, chocolate and leather are some of the many notes that flow through to the finish. John Alban's Pandora is a true American original. Readers should do what ever they can to experience this elixir. (AG)" (07/2014)

2008 EnRoute "Les Pommiers" Russian River Pinot Noir
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2008 EnRoute "Les Pommiers" Russian River Pinot Noir (93WE). Wine Enthusiast: "This is a very rich, ripe, flamboyant Pinot, made in the lush California style. It’s flashy in complex tiers of raspberries, cherries, red currants, licorice, cocoa and cinnamon spice, yet is silky and dry. The fruit comes from Sonoma Coast, Green Valley and the Middle Reach. An impressive followup to the inaugural ’07, and a bottling to watch. " (09/2010)

2007 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru "Charmes"
Bid on this bottle of 2007 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru "Charmes" (95BH, (93-95ST)). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "(in tank) Rich aromas of wet stone, minerals, vanilla and hazelnut. Large-scaled but tight, with this wine's typical firm acidity leavening its textural richness. This expands in the mouth like a top bottling of Perrieres. Perhaps less refined than the Genevrieres but bigger and more powerful wine. The mounting, expanding finish is almost painful." (09/2008)

2003 Angélus, St-Emilion
Bid on this bottle of 2003 Angélus, St-Emilion (99RP, 94WS, 93JS, 92ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the great successes in St. Emilion in 2003, this wine has actually gotten better over the last eleven years. Pushing perfection, this blend of 57% Cabernet Franc (the highest ever at Angelus) and 43% Merlot boasts a dense purple color as well as a sublime set of aromatics, including forest floor, blue, red and black fruits, charcoal and hints of licorice and wood spice. Long, opulent, voluptuously textured and incredibly youthful and fresh, this full-bodied, tour de force in winemaking is an absolute legend in the making. It is an incredible accomplishment for a Right Bank 2003. Kudos to Hubert de Bouard for his vision as well as his perfectionist personality. This beauty should age for 5-10 more years. 2006 M. Chapoutier "Le Pavillon" Ermitage Rouge
Bid on this bottle of 2006 M. Chapoutier "Le Pavillon" Ermitage Rouge (97RP, 96WS, 94WE, 93ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "There are nearly 1,200 cases of the 2006 Ermitage Le Pavillon. Since Michel Chapoutier released his first full vintage, 1989, of this single vineyard Hermitage, it has been one of the great wines of both France and the world. The 1989 and 1990 remain very young wines (I had them over the holiday break and was amazed by their still youthful personalities.). The inky/purple-hued 2006 exhibits a gorgeous perfume of crushed rocks, white flowers, creme de cassis, blackberries, graphite, and a subtle touch of oak. Exceptionally full-bodied, multilayered in concentration, extraordinarily pure, and long, this is a prodigious young Hermitage that should be at its finest between 2018-2050+." (04/2009)

Of the 2011 Big Basin "Lester Vineyard" Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir,Wine & Spirits writes: "Planted in 1998, Lester Family is a relatively low-elevation site for the Santa Cruz Mountains, the vines rooted in sandy loam over sandstone and shale at just above 500 feet near Corralitos, on the southern flank of the range. Bradley Brown ferments a portion of the fruit with whole clusters (30 percent), which contribute a wild earthiness to the aromas, suggesting gentian root, cumin and pink peppercorn. You could think of it as a wine geek’s California Pinot Noir, perhaps—a wine that flees from overt fruit sweetness in favor of more savory p

2000 Pavie, St-Emilion
Bid on this bottle of 2000 Pavie, St-Emilion (100RP, 96WS, 95ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This wine remains, for me, one of the compelling success stories for proprietor Gerard Perse. An extraordinary effort made from a blend of 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon from the limestone soils that dominate this very distinctive terroir, the 2000 Pavie has moved out of the closed, dormant, broodingly backward stage into an adolescent period where one can see its extraordinary vibrancy, and great complexity as well as potential. It boasts an unctuous display of rich, cedar box-infused cassis fruit and liquid minerality. The tannins have sweetened, yet the wine has thirty years of longevity and potential evolution. A beautiful wine of great mass as well as elegance, it is good to see the extraordinary efforts that Gerard Perse and his team have made confirmed in this prodigious wine. A legend now ... a legend for the future." (06/2010)

2003 Montrose, St-Estèphe
Bid on this bottle of 2003 Montrose, St-Estèphe (99RP, 97JS, 96ST, 95WE, 95WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The blend in 2003 was 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot (a very high percentage), 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. The wine, unlike most 2003s, has a freshness and liveliness provided by their extraordinary terroir. This wine can be drunk now. It has a dense bluish/purple color to the rim and an extraordinary nose of blueberries and mulberries, with blacker cassis and blackberry entering the picture. Scorched earth, spice and licorice are all present in this magnificent, full-bodied, opulent wine that is very Montrose, very classic and somewhat atypical of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2040. (RP)" (08/2014)

Of the 2010 Chasseur "Lorenzo Vineyard" Russian River Valley Chardonnay,Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar writes: "Vivid yellow. Exotically perfumed, expansive bouquet displays scents of poached pear, toasty lees, ginger and iodine, with a suave floral quality and a touch of minerality. Bid on this bottle of 1998 Penfolds "Grange" Shiraz South Australia (98RP, 97JH, 97ST, 97WS, 94JS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: " A wine that flirts with perfection, and should rival the 1986 as one of the legendary Granges produced, the 1998 has one of the highest alcohol contents (nearly 15%) as well as one of the highest percentages of Shiraz in the blend (97%). Its stunning purple color is accompanied by exceptionally sweet aromas of blackberry liqueur intermixed with barbecue spices, an endearing, smoky earthiness, pepper, roasted meats, and coffee. Huge, massive, unctuously textured, and extraordinarily youthful, this impressive wine is a candidate for perfection. It should continue to evolve over the next three decades. (RP)" (06/2009)

2010 Sine Qua Non "Stockholm Syndrome" Sta. Rita Hills Syrah
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2010 Sine Qua Non "Stockholm Syndrome" Sta. Rita Hills Syrah (100RP, 97AG). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2010 Syrah Stockholm Syndrome is a monumental effort that will stand toe-to-toe with the greatest Syrahs in the world. A blend of 96% Syrah, 3% Roussanne and 1% Viognier, it was fermented with 16% whole cluster before spending just under 42 months in 100% new French oak. It offers an incredible array of sweet dark fruits, cassis, white chocolate, licorice and hints of bacon fat that meld perfectly with its full-bodied, seamless, layered and impeccably put-together palate. Given the wealth of fruit here, it’s amazing how this stays light, graceful and elegant, without ever seeming over the top in any way. While there’s no shortage of tannin here, they’re sweet and integrated, so feel free to enjoy this rock-star effort anytime over the coming two decades or more. (JD)" (08/2014)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Utter perfection, and one of the most profound Rhone Ranger wines I have ever tasted... As with many prodigious wines, the extraordinary freshness, purity, equilibrium, and singularity of this effort is breathtaking. Its dense purple color is accompanied by an extraordinary, incredibly pure, all enveloping, intense, sweet nose of black raspberries, kirsch, spring flowers, spice box, and pepper. Bid on this 5-bottle lot of 2012 Occidental (Kistler) "Bodegas Headlands--Cuvee Elizabeth" Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir (98RP, 97AG). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "As good as the Cuvée Catherine is, there is another Occidental Pinot that is profound. There are 2,000 cases of the 2012 Pinot Noir Bodega Headlands Cuvée Elizabeth. This wine reminded me of my earlier days in Burgundy tasting the Grand Cru Musigny. Incredible floral notes, sweet raspberries and blueberries as well as wet rocks soar from the glass of this profound, medium to full-bodied, gorgeous Pinot Noir made from 100% Calera clone. Stunning ripeness, great acids, and terrific delineation are all present in this super-intense, fragrant, modern classic from Steve Kistler. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard RBS, which is also from Clone 337 but from different blocks on the Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard, saw oak with 90% new Darnajou and 10% new Taransaud. This wine seems slightly more expansive, shares the black ruby/purple color with all of it siblings, and has a boatload of crème de cassis, incense, licorice, graphite and vanilla along with plenty of spice box and forest floor.
