French Wine

When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its regions, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and occasionally as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a 100 lives. To understand and appreciate French wine, you only need to begin tasting them. Check out some of the top picks that our buyers have tracked down - several of these wines are imported directly from France.

1990 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1990 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac (99RP, 94WS, 93ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This magnificent Lynch Bages has been drinking well since the day it was released and it continues to go from strength to strength. The biggest, richest, fullest-bodied Lynch Bages until the 2000, the fully mature 1990 exhibits an unbelievably explosive nose of black currants, cedarwood, herbs and spice. The majestic, classically Bordeaux aromatics are followed by a full-bodied, voluptuously textured, rich, intense wine with superb purity as well as thrilling levels of fruit, glycerin and sweetness. This beauty should continue to provide immense pleasure over the next 15+ years. (RP)" (08/2011)

Wine Enthusiast: "There is only one question about what is otherwise a magnificent wine—whether the current dominant wood flavors will soften and blend enough. If they do, then the powerful fruit, spice and freshness will all come together in a stellar wine." (06/2007)

2004 Faiveley Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru "La Combe d`Orveau"
Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 2004 Faiveley Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru "La Combe d`Orveau" ((91-93BH)). Allen Meadows - Burghound: " If I had to nominate one wine as the top sleeper in Faiveley's considerable 1er portfolio, it would be this one. It's not always the best but it's always in the running for top honors and in 2004, it runs the table with its supremely high-toned aromas of ultra pure red pinot fruit nuanced with spice and tea notes. The flavor precision is so intense that it etches itself into the palate and is expressed almost as a rectilinear quality yet there is much better density here than most wines possessing this kind of delineation. In sum, this has that 'wow' factor with superb complexity and a stunningly refined demeanor. Buy it." (01/2006)

2000 Pierre Usseglio "Mon Aieul" Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2000 Pierre Usseglio "Mon Aieul" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (95RP, 93ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The profound 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de Mon Aieul (85% Grenache and the rest equal parts Syrah, Mourvedre, and Cinsault) tips the scales at 15% alcohol. From an old vineyard and cropped at 15 hectoliters per hectare, and aged only in foudre, it boasts a dense purple color in addition to an exquisite nose of violets, minerals, blueberries and blackberries. Pure and concentrated, but atypically tannic, it requires considerable aging as it is one of the vintage's more backward, broodingly powerful efforts. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2020." (02/2003)

Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2005 Domaine Louis Jadot Clos Vougeot Grand Cru ((93-95RP), (92-94BH), 94ST, 94WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Charred meat, black currant, and wet stone characterize the bouquet of Jadot’s 2005 Clos Vougeot. Savory, salty, brightly-fruited and invigoratingly juicy on the palate, this displays more energy and acidity than I would have expected from the appellation. For all of the clarity and juiciness of this wine’s fruit, grilled meat and stony earthiness combined with the emergence of formidable tannins and subtle but persistent cyanic and iodine notes to turn its formidably long finish somewhat austere. But this is going to result in an exciting rendition of its terroir if left in the dark for at least 6-8 years. " (06/2007)

Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2003 Domaine du Pégaü "Cuvée Reservée" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (98RP, 97WS, 94ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: " Starting with the 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reserve, this wine showed spectacularly on release, closed down for a few years, and has now emerged, at close to full maturity, and is straight-up fabulous. Out of the entire tasting, it remained my favorite. Giving up gorgeous blackberry, currants, garrigue, pepper and beef blood, it hits the palate with a massive, full-bodied texture that carries layers of sweet fruit, awesome concentration and blockbuster length. Tasting like the essence of both this estate and the terroir, it’s an incredible wine that I’m happy to taste/drink anytime. It will continue to evolve gracefully, but I see no reason to delay gratification. (JD)" (08/2014)

1975 Petrus, Pomerol
Bid on this bottle of 1975 Petrus, Pomerol (98RP, 95ST, 93WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the most rustic and powerful Petrus of the last 25 years, this wine still has a murky garnet/plum/purple color, a gorgeous nose of overripe black cherries, mocha, caramel, chocolate, and a hint of iron and blood. Full-bodied, super-concentrated, with massive tannin and extract, this behemoth Petrus can be enjoyed but still seems another 5-10 years away from maturity. It is certainly a 50-70 year wine, with exquisite concentration and intensity, but seemingly the rough edges will no doubt be less appealing to those looking for pure seamlessness. Perhaps that will emerge with bottle age. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2040. (Bordeaux Book 4th Edition)" (01/2003)

1966 DRC Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grand Cru "Romanée-Conti"
Bid on this bottle of 1966 DRC Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grand Cru "Romanée-Conti" (96BH). Allen Meadows - Burghound: " Interestingly, the Romanée-Conti possesses perhaps the freshest nose on any of the DRC '66s from regular 750 ml format as it immediately soars from the glass to reveal a classic RC nose of hoisin, spice, dark fruit, caramel and touches of earth, underbrush and a hint of game that is followed by rich, sweet and smoky medium full flavors that completely coat the palate and explode on the mineral-infused finish. A seriously impressive wine that is class in a glass and this is an exceptionally seductive RC for the usual underlying reserve is missing in action. In sum, a phenomenal performance for the relatively young vines. " (04/2007)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2004 Bouchard Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru ((93-95BH), 95ST, 95WE). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good bright dark red. Initially reticent aromas of cherry, cola, flowers, pepper and sweet oak. Dense and fine-grained but youthfully imploded, with a strong stony minerality keeping the red cherry, bitter chocolate and floral flavors under wraps. Finishes very juicy and very long, with intriguing pepper and floral nuances. The recorked bottle 24 hours later showed brilliantly complex aromas and flavors of black raspberry, bitter chocolate, rose petal and minerals and superb sappy persistence. A great expression of soil and a highlight of the vintage. I promise you that I drained the bottle to the last drop." (04/2001)

2001 Ausone, St-Emilion
Bid on this bottle of 2001 Ausone, St-Emilion (98RP, 95WS, 93ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2001 Ausone has put on even more weight than I anticipated. The 'wine of the vintage,' this inky/purple-colored 2001 boasts a provocative, floral perfume of crushed stones, raspberries, blackberries, creme de cassis, licorice, and smoke. What makes it so sensational are the layers of flavor and nuances that unfold as the wine sits in the glass as well as on the palate. This is an extraordinarily intense effort, but remarkably elegant and well-balanced. It ideally needs another decade of cellaring; it should last for 4-5 decades! Alain Vauthier is a perfectionist, which is evidenced by what he has produced over the last half dozen vintages at Ausone. Kudos to readers lucky enough to find a bottle or two ... and live long enough to enjoy them in their prime. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2050+. (RP)" (06/2004)

1986 Margaux, Margaux
Bid on this bottle of 1986 Margaux, Margaux (98AG, 98RP, 93WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A magnificent example of Chateau Margaux and one of the most tannic, backward Margauxs of the last 50 years, the 1986 continues to evolve at a glacial pace. The color is still a dense ruby/purple with just a hint of lightening at the rim. With several hours of aeration, the aromatics become striking, with notes of smoke, toast, creme de cassis, mineral, and white flowers. Very full-bodied, with high but sweet tannin, great purity, and a very masculine, full-bodied style, this wine should prove nearly immortal in terms of its aging potential. It is beginning to budge from its infantile stage and approach adolescence. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2050. Last tasted, 12/02. (RP)" (01/2003)

1996 Pichon-Baron, Pauillac
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1996 Pichon-Baron, Pauillac (91RP, 90ST, 90WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Pichon Longueville Baron's 1996 has turned out to be even better than I thought from cask. The high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend (about 80%) resulted in a wine that has put on weight in the bottle. An opaque purple color is accompanied by beautiful aromas of tobacco, new saddle leather, roasted coffee, and cassis. It is dense, medium to full-bodied, and backward, with moderately high tannin, but plenty of sweet fruit, glycerin, and extract to balance out the wine's structure. This well-endowed, classic Pauillac should be at its finest between 2006-2022." (04/1999)

Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2009 Domaine Hubert Lignier Morey-St-Denis 1er Cru Vieilles Vignes ((92-94RP), 90JS, 90ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Morey St. Denis Vieilles Vignes is a gorgeous, striking wine. It exhibits notable density in a rich, yet weightless expression of fruit that is hard to fully capture with words. The bright red fruit blossoms on the palate with tons of fragrance and elegance, building nicely to the long, intense finish. The Vieilles Vignes is made from parcels in Faconnieres and Chenevery planted in 1936 on soils similar to those found in Clos de la Roche. Yields here are typically around 20-25 hectoliters, with a high presence of shot berries. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029. " (05/2011)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the great successes in St. Emilion in 2003, this wine has actually gotten better over the last eleven years. Pushing perfection, this blend of 57% Cabernet Franc (the highest ever at Angelus) and 43% Merlot boasts a dense purple color as well as a sublime set of aromatics, including forest floor, blue, red and black fruits, charcoal and hints of licorice and wood spice. Long, opulent, voluptuously textured and incredibly youthful and fresh, this full-bodied, tour de force in winemaking is an absolute legend in the making. Bid on this bottle of 2006 M. Chapoutier "Le Pavillon" Ermitage Rouge (97RP, 96WS, 94WE, 93ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "There are nearly 1,200 cases of the 2006 Ermitage Le Pavillon. Since Michel Chapoutier released his first full vintage, 1989, of this single vineyard Hermitage, it has been one of the great wines of both France and the world. The 1989 and 1990 remain very young wines (I had them over the holiday break and was amazed by their still youthful personalities.). The inky/purple-hued 2006 exhibits a gorgeous perfume of crushed rocks, white flowers, creme de cassis, blackberries, graphite, and a subtle touch of oak. Exceptionally full-bodied, multilayered in concentration, extraordinarily pure, and long, this is a prodigious young Hermitage that should be at its finest between 2018-2050+." (04/2009)

Bid on this bottle of 2003 Montrose, St-Estèphe (99RP, 97JS, 96ST, 95WE, 95WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The blend in 2003 was 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot (a very high percentage), 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. The wine, unlike most 2003s, has a freshness and liveliness provided by their extraordinary terroir. This wine can be drunk now. It has a dense bluish/purple color to the rim and an extraordinary nose of blueberries and mulberries, with blacker cassis and blackberry entering the picture. Scorched earth, spice and licorice are all present in this magnificent, full-bodied, opulent wine that is very Montrose, very classic and somewhat atypical of the vintage. 2000 Pavie, St-Emilion
Bid on this bottle of 2000 Pavie, St-Emilion (100RP, 96WS, 95ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This wine remains, for me, one of the compelling success stories for proprietor Gerard Perse. An extraordinary effort made from a blend of 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon from the limestone soils that dominate this very distinctive terroir, the 2000 Pavie has moved out of the closed, dormant, broodingly backward stage into an adolescent period where one can see its extraordinary vibrancy, and great complexity as well as potential. It boasts an unctuous display of rich, cedar box-infused cassis fruit and liquid minerality. The tannins have sweetened, yet the wine has thirty years of longevity and potential evolution. A beautiful wine of great mass as well as elegance, it is good to see the extraordinary efforts that Gerard Perse and his team have made confirmed in this prodigious wine. He is now the most capable winemaker of the top estates in the Médoc. This is the best young Lafite I have tasted. A triumph. Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2005 Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru "Clos des Ducs" (96BH, (94-95RP), 94ST, 94WS). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "The magnificently pure and airy essence of notably ripe dark pinot fruit, cassis and menthol remains reserved and cool with its exceptionally rich, classy, sweet and vibrant mineral-driven and large-scaled flavors that are shaped by powerful if buried tannins. While magnificently long, this stunning Ducster is completely shut down at present and it would be a vinous crime to open one at this very early point in its development as the '05 is built for the very long haul, indeed 20 years may be too soon. In my view, the '05 Ducster is destined to take its place alongside the greatest vintages of the past, and while the words 'best ever' are presumptuous in a wine with such a distinguished history, the mere fact that it has the potential to be among the very best ever is praise enough." Yellow, with a golden hue and an almost green tint. Intense aromas of botrytis, spices and blanched almonds follow through to honey, maple syrup, dried apricot and pineapple. Full-bodied, sweet, thick and powerful, with layers of fruit and a bright, lively finish. Coats the palate yet remains exciting. So balanced and refined, showing the pedigree that only this Sauternes estate can deliver. Best after 2012." (11/2005)

Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A slightly less elegant but equally complex nose of almost exclusively red berry fruit aromas nuanced by touches of earth, underbrush and a subtle hint of game precede round, rich and generous flavors underpinned by suave tannins and a velvety and dusty finish. At present the tannins are on the chewy side and like the Latricières, this will require a certain amount of patience." (04/2007)

Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2001 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac (95WE, 93RP, 93W&S, 92ST, 92WS). Wine Enthusiast: " *Cellar Selection* The high proportion of Merlot in Pichon Lalande is a good reason why this wine, among the great wines of Pauillac, is always so seductive. This is no exception; it charms as well as excites with vibrant fruits as well as serious, dense tannins and acidity that promise good aging. Give it 7-9 years for full maturity to begin." 2000 La Mission Haut-Brion, Pessac-Léognan
Bid on this bottle of 2000 La Mission Haut-Brion, Pessac-Léognan (100RP, 95JS, 95ST, 93WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the wines of the vintage, the 2000 has barely budged in its evolution since it was bottled and released in 2002. After ten years in bottle, it still reveals a dense opaque purple color along with a potentially sensational bouquet of blueberries, black currants, graphite, asphalt and background oak. Extremely powerful, full-bodied and superbly concentrated with good acidity and high but round tannins, this massive La Mission-Haut-Brion should take its place among this estate’s most hallowed vintages when it hits full maturity in another one to two decades. I was surprised by just how youthful this wine tasted at age 12. If tasted blind, I would have guessed it to be around 4 to 5 years old. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2050." (08/2012)

It is classic in the best sense, showing all the shape of a fine Bordeaux, while adding the extra dimension of the freshest of black fruits, complexity from a few hints of wood, and a dark, brooding, long-lasting aftertaste." 1966 Montrose, St-Estèphe
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1966 Montrose, St-Estèphe. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1966 is still dark ruby with a peppery, very spice, yet tight, relatively closed bouquet. The wine is austere and tough on the palate, with good fruit and firm, rough tannins. Comparatively, it is not as massive or as rich as the 1970, 1964, or 1961, but is still backward and austere. Of the 1996 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac,Robert Parker's Wine Advocate writes: "The 1996 Pichon-Lalande is just as awesome from bottle as it was from multiple cask tastings... The color is a saturated ruby/purple. The nose suggests sweet, nearly overripe Cabernet Sauvignon, with its blueberry/blackberry/cassis scents intermixed with high quality, subtle, toasty new oak. 2006 M. Chapoutier "L'Ermite" Ermitage
Bid on this bottle of 2006 M. Chapoutier "L'Ermite" Ermitage (98RP, 97WS, 94ST, 94WE). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "There are nearly 1,000 cases of the 2006 Ermitage l’Ermite, another candidate for perfection in a few years. It boasts an inky/ruby/purple color as well as a stunning bouquet reminiscent of a grand cru Musigny from Burgundy. Spring flower, crushed rock, black raspberry, and black currant scents dominate the aromatics of this incredibly pure, full-bodied wine. With laser-like precision and enormous extract and concentration, it comes across as remarkably elegant and fresh with crystal clear focus. A beautiful tour de force from the decomposed granitic soils of this site on the top of the Hermitage mountain, this amazing wine requires a decade of cellaring, and should last for 35 years." Now fully mature, the good examples of this wine will last a decade. Certainly the best Pontet-Canet I have ever tasted. The wine performed splendidly at a vertical tasting at Pontet-Canet in 1990. Bid on this bottle of 2007 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault "Clos de la Barre" (91BH, 91ST). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Pale color. Discreet aromas of soft citrus fruits and powdered stone. Juicy and tightly wound, with a captivating floral perfume in the mouth. For a wine with a light touch, this finishes with impressive thrust, not to mention aromatic persistence. Bid on this bottle of 1982 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac (97RP, 96AG, 96JS, 95ST, 94WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is a denser version of the 1990 that stylistically reminds me of what the young 1959 probably tasted like. Still backward with a deep ruby/plum color revealing only a touch of lightening at the edge, the wine offers up an extraordinary nose of caramelized herbs, smoke, cedar, pen ink, black currants, and earth. The gorgeous aromatics are followed by a full-bodied, plump, rich, fleshy wine with low acidity. With 6-8 hours decanting in a closed decanter, it will offer beautiful drinking, but it needs another 5-8 years to reach full maturity. It is capable of lasting 50-60 years. (97+) (RP)" (06/2009)

2006 Frederic Esmonin Chambertin Clos de Beze
Bid on this 9-bottle lot of 2006 Frederic Esmonin Chambertin Clos de Beze. From the importer: "Esmonin is becoming one of the most consistent, high quality producers in Gevrey. They are now using a new bladder-press and have excellent control over the amount of pressure exerted on the grapes, which are picked only when they have reached ideal ripeness. After a short cold maceration gives the wines an extra dimension of fruit, they are aged in carefully selected French oak barrels of Allier and Nevers forest wood made by Radoux and Berthomieu, two of the very best coopers. Wines are aged in barrels of varying age and toast and then blended in order to achieve optimum balance and complexity." Frederic Esmonin on the 2006 Vintage: "Yields were “about the same as in 2005 with approximately a 10% loss due to hail. Sugars ranged from 12 to 13% and Burgundy lovers will find much to like as the wines are supple, round, approachable and fresh, indeed very terroir in character.” (Burghound, Jan

1999 Margaux, Margaux
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1999 Margaux, Margaux (94RP, 93ST, 93WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The sexy, dark plum/purple-colored 1999 Margaux is already revealing complex aromatics. This surprisingly charming and round offering is reminiscent of a vintage such as 1985. Although neither a blockbuster nor a heavyweight, it grows in the mouth revealing tremendous length as well as purity. Administrator Paul Pontallier prefers it to the more austere 1998, as do I. This is an archetypical Chateau Margaux of richness, finesse, balance, and symmetry. It can be drunk young, but promises to age nicely for two decades. Extrapolating backwards, it would probably have something in common with the underrated 1962 Medocs. (RP)" (04/2002)

This is one of the most exciting young reds I have tasted in a long, long time. It shows intense aromas of berries, currants and minerals, with hints of mint. Full-bodied and packed with fruit and tannins, its long finish is refined and silky. A benchmark for the vintage. Bid on this bottle of 2010 La Violette, Pomerol (100RP, 96ST, 94WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Sadly, there's not a whole lot of production to this microscopic estate in Pomerol, but the name says it all. The awesome aromatics include not only raspberries, black cherries, and blackberry, but also the floral perfume of an haute couture house. Its terrific aromatics are followed by a wine with quintessential elegance married to almost unbridled density of fruit, all presented in a flawless and seamless concoction of full-bodied power, elegance and purity. Bid on this bottle of 2009 Cheval Blanc, St-Emilion (99JS, 99RP, (96-98WE), 98WS, 97ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "It will be fascinating to follow the evolution of the 2009 Cheval Blanc versus the 2010 as well as the awesome 2005, 2000, 1998 and 1990. This famous estate’s vineyard is situated at the juncture of Pomerol and the sandy, gravelly soils of St.-Emilion, facing the two noble estates of l’Evangile and La Conseillante. A blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc, the 2009 Cheval Blanc tips the scales at just under 14% natural alcohol. Its dense blue/purple color is accompanied by an extraordinary nose of incense, raspberries, cassis, sweet forest floor and a subtle hint of menthol. Opulent and full-bodied with low acidity but no sense of heaviness, this dense, unctuously textured, super-smooth, velvety, pure, profound Cheval Blanc is impossible to resist despite its youthfulness. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2002 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac (94RP, (91-94ST), 91WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the best wines of the vintage, this is a classic Pauillac that is a blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Petit Verdot. Dense ruby/purple in color with a glorious nose of melted licorice, lavender, barbecue smoke, black currants, and graphite, the wine is tannic, classically structured with an opaque ruby/purple color, beautiful definition, and a 1996-ish personality. This deep, full-bodied, elegant yet powerful 2002 should age handsomely for over two decades. Some patience will be required since this vintage exhibits more muscle and virility than normal. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025." (04/2005)

1990 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1990 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac (96RP, 95WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Interestingly, a bottle of 1990 Lafite Rothschild I pulled from my cellar for a video blog on my web site was still buttoned down, tight, and even with extended decanting was not showing as much as I would have hoped. However, a bottle tasted, of all places, in Seoul, Korea in February, was only a few points short of perfection. That amazing performance motivated me to pull another bottle out of my cellar and follow it over the course of two days. Sure enough, by the second day the wine was roaring from the glass. The 1990 Lafite has turned out far better than my early assessment. While it still possesses some firmness, and performs like a late adolescent in terms of its evolution, it boasts gorgeous aromas of cedar, tobacco leaf, cassis, and lead pencil shavings. The explosive aromas are followed by a fleshy, full-bodied wine that should hit its peak in 5-8 years, and last for 25-30 mo

Very full-bodied, opulent, and rich, it is one of the 1989s that justifies the lofty reputation of this vintage. Bid on this bottle of 1993 Emmanuel Rouget Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru "Cros Parantoux" (96RP, 95WS, 93BH). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I was reliably informed that Henri Jayer practically made the Cros Parantoux. Whether it was Henri or his nephew Emmanuel, this stands as a superb Pinot Noir that after twenty years is only beginning to show what it can do. The bouquet is jam-packed full of broody, dark berry fruit laced with minerals, whilst the tightly wound palate displays the concentration you would expect from a much warmer vintage. There is real structure here, exerting a grip that suggests it will need another four or five years or seriously long decanting to loosen up. There is wonderful sinew on the finish: a bold Cros Parantoux built like a shire horse for the long-term. Tasted May 2013. (NM)" (06/2013)

1982 Calon Ségur, St-Estèphe
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1982 Calon Ségur, St-Estèphe (94RP, 93ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Like Certan de May, I bought this in both half and 750 ml bottles. Only recently have the half bottles reached full maturity, and the 750 ml remains a massive, backward wine for long-term aging. A dense, opaque garnet color is followed by notes of roasted meats, herbs, black currants, incense, and damp earth. Full-bodied, still extremely tannic (sweet but noticeable tannins), rich, and backward, where perfectly stored, this 1982 will last for another 50 years. The estate has always compared it to their 1947, which is still a vibrant wine, and the 1982 should be just as profound. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2040." (06/2009)

This is an inky/purple, beefy, broad, super-rich Pauillac revealing classic creme de cassis notes intermixed with hints of spring flowers and crushed rocks. Full-bodied with velvety tannins that have resolved themselves beautifully over the last eleven years, this wine is still an adolescent, but it exhibits admirable purity, texture, mouthfeel and power combined with elegance. Bid on this bottle of 2004 Ausone, St-Emilion (98W&S, 95WS, 94RP, 93ST). Wine & Spirits: "Tasted from barrel in 2005, this was among the best wines of the vintage, with limestone-soil character coming through the fresh brightness of fruit. Ausone was all potential energy then, and it has only improved in the two years since. The wine shares the resonant depths of the ancient limestone caves at Ausone, as the flavors echo through the finish. It starts off from a small place, a sweet confection that brings roasted blueberries to mind, the caramelized oak tasting like the edge of charred fat on extremely fine grilled beef. Over the course of several days, the wine becomes increasingly more subtle and serious in tone, with delicate red fruit, gracious mineral-inflected tannins and detailed flavors that last effortlessly. This Ausone will live for decades." (10/2007)

Bid on this 6L-bottle lot of 2009 Lanessan, Haut-Médoc (6L) (OWC - (90-92RP)) in original wood. 90-92 points Robert Parker: "...the 2009 Lanessan seems more explosive and concentrated than prior vintages. I’m not sure it is the finest I have ever tasted, but it boasts a dense purple color as well as copious creme de cassis, cedar wood, underbrush, and spice notes. Beautiful opulence, silky tannins, and a long finish suggest this sleeper of the vintage will drink well for 2-3 decades. (Tasted once.)" (04/10) 90-92 points Neal Martin: "Tasted at Vintex. The excellent Lanessan '09 sports a tightly-wound nose that is well defined with blackberry, plum and cedar, earthy notes coming through with time. This demonstrated much more sense of terroir than other Medoc 2009s. The palate is full-bodied with good fruit concentration, fine balance with a rounded supple blackberry and cedar finish that retains Médocian typicité. Bid on this magnum of 2005 Brane-Cantenac, Margaux (1.5L) (95WE, 94RP, 92WS). Robert Parker: "This is the finest Brane-Cantenac I have tasted in over thirty years. Unusually perfumed and already approachable (atypical for most 2005 Medocs), it reveals a deep plum/purple color as well as a stunningly flamboyant bouquet of smoked herbs, licorice, camphor, black cherries, currants, and notions of plums and blackberries. Elegant with silky tannin and medium body, it is clearly a classic statement on the Margaux appellation. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A vintage that’s drinking at point today for most producers, Jean-Paul’s 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape is still young and concentrated, with a rich, structured, yet complex profile. Giving up classic licorice, garrigue, dried flowers and plums and cherry-driven fruit, it has full-bodied richness, big tannin and a ripe, concentrated and lengthy feel on the palate. Of the 2003 Domaine de la Janasse "Vieilles Vignes" Châteauneuf-du-Pape,Robert Parker's Wine Advocate writes: "A wine I’ve had more than a case of, sometimes with irregular results, the 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes was drinking about as good as it gets on this occasion. As usual, it’s made in a deeper, richer style than the Chaupin and offers thrilling texture, a smoking mid-palate and nothing but gorgeous Grenache fruit on the finish. Loaded with notions of blackberry liqueur, kirsch, fruit cake and spice, enjoy this knockout effort over the coming 2-4 years or so. " (08/2014)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A brilliant dense purple color is accompanied by an extraordinary perfume of camphor, graphite, plums, cassis, and barbecue spices. A prodigious, multilayered, medium-bodied effort with exceptional concentration, a fabulous texture, and a 50-second finish, this brilliant achievement is one of the vintage’s monumental wines. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2020+. P.S. Yields were a mere 28 hectoliters per hectare, which no doubt explains the wine’s stunning concentration." (06/2004)

It is amazing to taste these wines at 30 years of age and see that their signatures are all very much intact. Of course, the magnum format is so ideal for Champagne... The 1982 Dom Pérignon is just a little more focused and vibrant in style. Here it is the wine’s salivating minerality that really sings. It, too, is quite youthful and vibrant for its age. Amazingly opulent, even voluptuous, with extraordinary purity, a huge tactile impression on the palate, but not heavy by any means, this is a stunning Chateauneuf du Pape from ancient vines made with 95% Grenache and the rest Cinsault and Syrah. 1990 d'Yquem, Sauternes
Bid on this bottle of 1990 d'Yquem, Sauternes (99RP, 94ST, 92WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "An extraordinary effort, Yquem's 1990 is a rich and fabulously superb, sweet wine. This wine also possesses lots of elegance and finesse. The wine's medium gold color is accompanied by an exceptionally sweet nose of honeyed tropical fruits, peaches, coconut, and apricots. High quality, subtle toasty oak is well-integrated. The wine is massive on the palate, with layers of intensely ripe botrytis-tinged, exceptionally sweet fruit. Surprisingly well-integrated acidity, and a seamless, full-bodied power and richness have created a wine of remarkable harmony and purity. Certainly it is one of the richest Yquems I have ever tasted, with 50-100 years of potential longevity. An awesome Yquem! Anticipated maturity: 2003-2050+. (RP)" (04/1999)

A stunningly opulent wine with a dense purple color, the 2005 possesses a beautiful perfume of spring flowers, blueberries, blackberries, creosote, and graphite, full body, silky but noticeable tannins, a layered mouthfeel, and a stunning, 45+-second finish. Deeply colored, superbly balanced, rich and full bodied, it appears to be a worthy candidate for another 15-20 years of longevity. It is a classic example of this chateau's wine - cedary, very fragrant, with plenty of sweet red and black currant fruit. I should also note that it is surprisingly powerful for the vintage. It gets my nod as the finest Calon-Segur between 1982 and 1995. (RP)" (01/1998)

1982 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1982 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac (100JS, 100RP, 98ST, 98WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This wine remains one of the legends of Bordeaux. It has thrown off the backward, youthful style that existed during its first 25 years of life, and over the last 4-5 years has developed such secondary nuances as cedar and spice box. The creme de cassis, underlying floral note, full-bodied power, extraordinary purity, multilayered texture, and finish of over a minute are a showcase for what this Chateau accomplished in 1982. The wine is still amazingly youthful, vibrant, and pure. It appears capable of remaining fruity and vibrant in 2082! Thank God it is beginning to budge, as I would like to drink most of my supply before I kick the bucket. This is a great, still youthful wine, and, on occasion, one does understand the hierarchy of Bordeaux chateaux when you see the complexity and brilliance of this first-growth." (06/2009)

2003 Latour, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 2003 Latour, Pauillac (100RP, 99JS, (96-98WE), 98WS, 97ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Administrator Frederic Engerer says the 2003 is 'the sexiest Latour ever made.' He also described it as 'the 1990 without any brettanomyces.' I loved this wine from the barrel and was fortunate enough to be able to purchase a small quantity, enjoying every bottle I have had. A profound example of Chateau Latour, the full-bodied, opulent 2003 is already performing well at age eleven, which is somewhat atypical. The pH is a relatively high 3.8, which also indicates low acidity. The wine is very ripe, but not over-ripe, offers great freshness, and lots of creme de cassis and camphor as well as hints of blackberries and chocolate. Dense, thick and unctuously textured, this staggering Latour is undeniably the most sumptuous, opulent wine made here since the 1982 or 1961. Drink it over the next two decades. (RP)" (08/2014)

Still inky/blue/purple-tinged to the rim, it reveals an extraordinary bouquet of charcoal, incense, creme de cassis, blue and black fruits, and a hint of licorice as well as an impressively long finish. 1994 Cheval Blanc, St. Emilion
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1994 Cheval Blanc, St. Emilion. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Dark ruby/purple-colored, with a complex, spicy, tobacco, vanilla, blackcurrant, mineral, and floral-scented nose, the 1994 is a bigger, more structured wine than the 1993, its older sibling, but is it better? The wine finishes with mouthsearing tannin, which detracts from the otherwise impressive aromatics and sweet, medium-bodied, lush attack. As I have written many times in the past, Cheval Blanc has a tendency to fatten up, put on weight, and expand both aromatically and texturally with age, so perhaps this wine will move in that direction." Outstanding* A more complex and beautifully layered nose features aromas of ripe cassis, blueberry and bitter chocolate with a trace of roasted coffee that introduce stylish, pure and detailed flavors underpinned by obvious minerality and refined tannins that confer a silky texture onto the explosively long finish. Medium to full-bodied, it is super-ripe, wonderfully elegant, fresh, pure, and exhibits an exceedingly long finish. Great velvety waves of candied red, bing, and black cherries dominate this decadent (yet refined) gem’s personality. Its dense purple color reveals a slight lightening at the edge and the stunning bouquet offers classic notes of creme de cassis, subtle smoke, oak and graphite. 1978 Margaux, Margaux
Bid on this bottle of 1978 Margaux, Margaux (92RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Although the 1978 is a more powerful, fuller-bodied style of Margaux, it is less charming and fruity than the 1979. The 1978's nose has moved from one of ripe fruit and spicy oak, to tarry, truffle, earthy aromas that come across as slightly too masculine and meaty. Nevertheless, this is a rich, full-bodied, concentrated Margaux that only suffers in comparison with the great vintages produced under the Mentzelopoulos regime. Some of its rusticity may be due to tannins that were not totally ripe during the harvest. In any event, it remains one of the few great wines from the 1978 vintage. (RP)" (01/1998)

1969 Chateau de la Gardine Chateauneuf-du-Pape
Bid on this bottle of 1969 Chateau de la Gardine Chateauneuf-du-Pape. According to Robert Parker: "A decidedly modern take on Chateauneuf du Pape, but wine built for long-term aging is the rule of thumb from this estate tucked away in the very western reaches of Chateauneuf du Pape. I have cellared their Cuvee des Generations as far back as 1978. It’s a wine that does behave more like a Bordeaux than many Chateauneuf du Papes, requiring a good decade of cellaring, and it may be one of the few wines that takes that long to shed some tannin. Of course it sees aging in new oak barrels, as La Gardine was one of the first to use new oak for its Chateauneuf du Pape, and while the wine can be somewhat internationally styled and oaky in its youth, the wood does get absorbed as the wine ages, and after a decade there is no doubt it is a southern Rhone wine with plenty of Provencal typicity in it." The 2004 acidity comes through in the sweet cassis flavors, supported at the back by dry tannins. Bid on this 12-bottle lot of 2006 Chateau de la Tour Clos Vougeot Vieilles Vignes (OWC - 94BH, 93ST) in original wood. There is ample punch to the quite serious, driving, well-detailed and superbly well-balanced concentrated and broad-shouldered flavors that are blessed with plenty of dry extract on powerful and explosively long finish. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Chamomile, green tea, white peach, honeysuckle, orange blossom, and crushed stone are evoked by the scent of the Coche-Dury 2006 Meursault Perrieres. Citrus oils and marzipan, along with a subtle note of caramelization to its abundant pit fruits all testify irresistibly to the ripeness of the vintage, yet without any sense of superficial sweetness or fattiness. Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2006 Domaine Francois Bertheau Chambolle-Musigny "Les Amoureuses" (92BH, 92RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Animal and woodsy notes mingle with red fruits and holly in the nose of Bertheau's 2006 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses. Resinous, saline, and tar-like elements join on the fine-grained palate and follow into a long finish underlain by low-toned meaty and mossy flavors that crystallizes this wine's intrigue. I would give it 2-3 years of rest before savoring it over the subsequent half dozen. (DS)" (12/2009)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2006 Domaine Jean Grivot Richebourg Grand Cru (96RP, 95WS, 94BH, 94ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Grivot's 2006 Richebourg unsurprisingly displays a richness, meaty substantiality, and carnal depth that go beyond the other wines in his current collection. Peat, myriad tobaccos, black tea, roasted game, faded lilies, toasted praline, and dark fungal and forest floor elements kaleidoscopically scent the nose, and carry onto a sumptuously-, silkenly-textured, wet stone-lined, yet juicy, buoyant, and dynamic palate. While this wine is not about fruits and berries, it offers black cherries and purple plums to spare. The finish here perpetuates the seemingly paradoxical alliance of grip with levity; caress with vibrancy; and concentration with elegance that characterize many of the finest wines of the vintage. Grivot tasted it with me for the first time after bottling and remarked that he was amazed at what it had gained – not to mention how little if anythi

1961 Lynch Bages, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1961 Lynch Bages, Pauillac (95RP, 90WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Still a spectacular wine, the 1961 defies mortality. It has been at its peak for nearly 15 years, yet it shows no signs of losing its fruit and drying out. The color is a dark garnet with orange/amber at the edge. The profound bouquet has the magnetic allure that leaves great Bordeaux unmatched for complexity. Sweet notes of dried fruits, herbs, tobacco, smoke, and roasted meats are followed by an opulently-textured, thick, nearly viscous wine with high glycerin, ripe, jammy fruit, and an intoxicating combination of glycerin, extract, and suppleness. The wine holds in the glass without cracking up, and has a good 40-45 second finish. There is no telling how much longer this 1961 will retain its magic, but it is still a classic. (RP)" (06/2000)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is one of the great wines of the vintage, and certainly a candidate for one of the finest wines made at this estate under the management of Christian Seeley and proprietor AXA. Showing incredibly well at two tastings of 2000s, the wine has a dense bluish/purple color and a beautiful nose of incense, melted asphalt, and creme de cassis as well as hints of new saddle leather and licorice. It is superbly concentrated and very pure, with excellent texture and opulence. The acidity seems low, the tannin high but well-integrated. The color is a saturated dark ruby/purple. The bouquet offers aromas of blackberry fruit intermixed with licorice, minerals, and dried herbs. Rich and intense, with considerable finesse, medium to full body, and outstanding concentration and purity, this should be a reasonably priced wine. A broodingly dense, thick, unctuously textured, inky/plum/garnet/purple color offers up scents of beef blood, steak tartare, cassis, herbs, tobacco, and underbrush. One of the most concentrated wines of the vintage (as well as one of the most concentrated Bordeaux’s I have ever tasted), it is a huge, full-bodied, weighty, rich wine whose tannins are getting silkier and silkier. It appears set for another 30-40 years of life. This behemoth is a singularly profound example of Gruaud Larose that continues to justify its legendary status. Anticipated maturity: now-2050. 1983 Palmer, Margaux
Bid on this bottle of 1983 Palmer, Margaux (98RP, 90WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This wine goes from strength to strength, and is certainly a candidate for 'wine of the vintage.' It has surpassed even Chateau Margaux in recent tastings. The color is an opaque plum/purple. The wine has a fabulously complex nose of smoked duck, white flowers, cedar, Asian spice, creme de cassis, melted licorice, and espresso. Super-concentrated, very powerful, full-bodied, and huge, this is undeniably, one of the biggest, most concentrated, and powerful Palmers made in the last 40 years. The wines has thrown off the rugged tannins that were so prominent during its first 10-15 years of life and has become increasingly seamless and compelling. 1955 M. Chapoutier Cote Rotie "Brune et Blonde"
Bid on this bottle of 1955 M. Chapoutier Cote Rotie "Brune et Blonde". The Côte-Rotie vineyard is certainly one of the oldest in existence in the Rhône valley: Vienne wines were already highly reputed by Rome as far back as one century B.C. An old, fondly told legend, belonging to Côte-Rotie, related the story of the seigneur de Maugiron. He, having two daughters, one blond and the other dark haired, bequeathed a hillside to each one of them. Thus were born the names of "Côte-Blonde" and "Côte-Brune."

Medium to full-bodied and fleshy with low acidity, sweet tannin, and an expansive mouthfeel with no hard edges, it is a fully mature 1990 that should drink well for another decade. 1982 Latour, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1982 Latour, Pauillac (100RP, 98JS, 98WS, 97ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Always somewhat atypical, the 1982 Latour has been the most opulent, flamboyant, and precocious of the northern Medocs, especially the St.-Juliens, Pauillacs, and St.-Estephes. It hasn't changed much over the last 10-15 years, revealing sweet tannins as well as extraordinarily decadent, even extravagant levels of fruit, glycerin, and body. It is an amazing wine, and on several occasions, I have actually picked it as a right bank Pomerol because of the lushness and succulence of the cedary, blackberry, black currant fruit. This vintage has always tasted great, even in its youth, and revealed a precociousness that one does not associate with this Chateau. However, the 1982 is still evolving at a glacial pace. The concentration remains remarkable, and the wine is a full-bodied, exuberant, rich, classic Pauillac in its aromatic and flavor profiles...This remarkable effort will last as lon

1998 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1998 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac (96RP, 94W&S, 93ST, 91WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Like many of its peers, the 1998 has filled out spectacularly. Now in the bottle, this opaque black/purple-colored offering has increased in stature, richness, and size. A blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc (57% of the production was utilized), it is an extremely powerful, super-concentrated wine offering notes of roasted espresso, creme de cassis, smoke, new saddle leather, graphite, and licorice. It is massive, with awesome concentration, mouth-searing tannin levels, and a saturated flavor profile that grips the mouth with considerable intensity. This is a 50-year Mouton, but patience will be required as it will not be close to drinkability for at least a decade. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2050. (RP)" (04/2001)

1982 La Mission Haut-Brion, Graves
Bid on this bottle of 1982 La Mission Haut-Brion, Graves (100RP, 97JS, 95ST, 94WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the handful of perfect wines of the vintage, the La Mission still possesses a remarkably dense ruby/purple color with only a slight garnet and lightening at the edge. The fruit-dominated aromatics reveal lots of cassis, blueberry, scorched earth, black truffle, incense, graphite and high-class, unsmoked cigar tobacco-like notes. Still exhibiting remarkable concentration, enormous body, silky sweet tannin, and no perceptible acidity, the 1982 remains fresh, delineated and super-compelling...this modern day legend shows no signs of decline. Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2006 Domaine Groffier Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru (94ST, 92RP). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good bright, deep red. Knockout nose combines cherry, licorice, white pepper and flowers, plus a suggestion of crushed berries. Dense, sweet and sharply delineated, with an urgent, tangy quality to the flavors of red berries, spices and pepper. Another 2006 with outstanding energy and length. The wine's electric finishing notes of ginger and blood orange reminded me of a 2007, but the Groffiers' 2007 version of this cuvee seems yet riper. And this one may be longer. (ST)" (08/2009)

This was the last of three bottles out of 24 that Aidan Bell had opened. He brought it to the Southwold 2009 bordeaux tasting in memory of John Avery. It had almost certainly been made and bottled by Bourrée of Gevrey apparently. Its sweetness reminded Sebastian Payne MW of Gigondas. A glorious liquid even if not desperately like modern Chambertin. Bid on this 2-magnum lot of 2006 Domaine Louis Jadot Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru (1.5L) (96ST, 95RP, 94BH). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright, full red. Vibrant but brooding nose shows a medicinal austerity to the pungent aromas of raspberry, flowers and botanical herbs. Penetrating, high-pitched and brilliantly delineated, with uncanny energy and lift to the red berry, floral and mineral flavors. This saturates every square millimeter of the palate, then explodes with perfume on the expanding aftertaste. The overall impression is of pure soil-driven energy in a rather uncompromising style, but when I drank the second half of my bottle two days later with food, it showed a deep cherry flavor and compelling sweetness. It is an accessible vintage,' says Etienne Grivot, quickly signifying that "accessible" should on no account be taken pejoratively, or as excluding cerebral appeal. His aim to reinforce these characteristics by very gentle extraction has proven highly successful....Incidentally, prices dropped a bit here in the 2006 vintage, an especially welcome move when one considers the high quality of the wines, not to mention the prestige of this estate." Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2001 Jadot Chambertin Clos de Beze (93BH, 90ST). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A gorgeously perfumed, highly complex and wonderfully spicy nose combines with hints of earth and mostly red berry fruit aromas that are beginning to display some secondary development. The broad-shouldered and solidly powerful flavors also reflect the same attractive depth as the nose with a lovely minerality and excellent definition before culminating in a long, sappy and impeccably well-balanced finish. While sufficiently mature to be enjoyable now, for my taste I would allow another 4 to 6 years of cellar time first. In sum, while there is good punch and power, this is essentially a Clos de Bèze of refinement and elegance." (07/2012)

1959 M. Chapoutier Cote Rotie "Brune et Blonde"
Bid on this bottle of 1959 M.

1967 Margaux, Margaux
Bid on this bottle of 1967 Margaux, Margaux. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is certainly the most feminine and most charming of the First Growths. It is usually the most pleasurable wine to taste out of barrel, then seems to close down more than most for around five years, before emerging with its true colours... The fundamental virtue of a great Château Margaux is poise; the way it tiptoes on the palate like a ballerina, full of strength and grace. The character of the wine itself is crushed blackberries, cassis and violets and the texture is very different from that of the Pauillac First Growths: rich, sensuous and seductive. Its tannins a finer, lending the wine a certain transparency and clarity that is rare in Bordeaux. (Producer Profile)" (11/2006)

1966 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1966 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac (96RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "My God, this is a wonderful mature Lafite. Served blind chez Rosemary George MW it has a definable Pauillac nose with subtle notes of cedar, sous-bois and a touch of dried blood. It has incredible harmony and purity – a bouquet that has you instantly captivated. The palate does not disappoint: a beguiling sense of natural harmony and delineation, not the weight of Latour nor the femininity of Margaux, but a Lafite aiming for understated sophistication. Delicate cedar and cigar box towards the finish that just goes on and on. This bottle vindicates my first encounter in Bordeaux, when it similarly bewitched its audience. Absolutely sublime. A point. The inky/garnet/plum/purple-colored 1990 exhibits notes of coffee, blackberries, licorice, camphor, and espresso. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "As I wrote in my barrel tasting note, the 2009 appears to be the finest Gruaud Larose since their 1990. Some of my concerns about too much brett in previous vintages are long gone as the purity of the 2009 jumps out. Copious notes of sagebrush, cedar, cigar box, licorice, incense, blackberries and lead pencil shavings suggest a big Pauillac rather than a St.-Julien. Broad, rich and full-bodied with good balance and abundant, but sweet, well-integrated tannin, this big, masculine Gruaud Larose reveals remarkable finesse, richness, extract, density and a cascade of fruit that nearly hides the lofty tannins. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2005 La Pousse d'Or Volnay 1er Cru "Clos des 60 Ouvrées" ((92-94BH), 94RP, 93ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Volnay Caillerets Clos des 60 Ouvrees (like the Clos d’Audinac and Clos de la Bousse d’Or, a monopole) features the oldest vines in the estate’s Volnay holdings, more than half of them planted in the mid fifties. Black cherry, purple plum, pistachio, ginger, and cumin inform the nose. On the palate this offers old vines creaminess, flattering glycerin, and yet also a persistently bright freshness of black fruits. A deep, lingering, faintly caramel-inflected bitter-sweetness, spice, and chalk further testifies to the concentration in this wine, which surpasses the Bousse d’Or in structure and gives it a hard run for its money in the charm department. Check on this in 8-10 years but then figure on another decade of improvement in the cellar. (DS)" (04/2007)

2005 Larcis-Ducasse, St-Emilion
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2005 Larcis-Ducasse, St-Emilion (98RP, 95WS, 94ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This great terroir on the Cote Pavie has long been recognized as one of the most privileged spots in St.-Emilion, but it was not until the wunderkind duo of Nicolas Thienpont and Stephane Derenoncourt took over in 2002 that the wine finally began to live up to its potential. Old timers who remember the 1945 Larcis Ducasse will attest to how great this cuvee can be. Sadly, fewer than 3,000 cases were produced of the 2005, a blend of 78% Merlot and the rest primarily Cabernet Franc with a small dollop of Cabernet Sauvignon. Yields were a modest 27 hectoliters per hectare. This stunning effort reveals one of the most extraordinary aromatic displays of the vintage, offering up notes of sweet roasted herbs, jus du viande, black olives, espresso roast, creme de cassis, and kirsch liqueur. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1998 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac (91ST, 89WS). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "(78% cabernet sauvignon, 14% merlot, 6% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot; 5.4 g/l total acidity; 13.2% alcohol): Dark ruby-red. Ripe blackcurrant aromas and flavors are lifted by pungent graphite, cedar and mineral notes. Balanced, pure and smooth in the mouth, with excellent perfume and precision. Finishes long and pure, with lingering cassis and leather notes. This is another Lynch-Bages that has picked up volume and flesh from bottle aging. 1995 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1995 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac (96RP, 94WS, 92ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "What sumptuous pleasures await those who purchase either the 1996 or 1995 Pichon Lalande. It is hard to choose a favorite, although the 1995 is a smoother, more immediately sexy and accessible wine. It is an exquisite example of Pichon-Lalande with the Merlot component giving the wine a coffee/chocolatey/cherry component to go along with the Cabernet Sauvignon's and Cabernet Franc's complex blackberry/cassis fruit. The wine possesses an opaque black/ruby/purple color, and sexy, flamboyant aromatics of pain grille, black fruits, and cedar. Exquisite on the palate, this full-bodied, layered, multidimensional wine should prove to be one of the vintage's most extraordinary success stories. (RP)" (02/1998)

Bid on this 3-half-bottle lot of 2009 Pontet-Canet, Pauillac (375ml) (100RP, 98JS, 96ST, 96WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "An amazing wine in every sense, this classic, full-bodied Pauillac is the quintessential Pontet Canet from proprietor Alfred Tesseron, who continues to reduce yields and farms his vineyards biodynamically a rarity in Bordeaux. Black as a moonless night, the 2009 Pontet Canet offers up notes of incense, graphite, smoke, licorice, creme de cassis and blackberries. A wine of irrefutable purity, laser-like precision, colossal weight and richness, and sensational freshness, this is a tour de force in winemaking that is capable of lasting 50 or more years. The tannins are elevated, but they are sweet and beautifully integrated as are the acidity, wood and alcohol (which must be in excess of 14%). This vineyard, which is situated on the high plateau of Pauillac adjacent to Mouton Rothschild, appears to have done everything perfectly in 2009. This cuvee should shut do

La Selve is certified organic and may technically be in the Rhône Valley, but really lies just to the west.
