Sourced from Monte Bello Vineyard. Winemaker Eric Baugher describes this red, "Purple/saturated ruby. Pungent cassis and blackberry fruits, fennel, cola, toasted oak, clove and cardamom spice. Full bodied, with structured tannins and lively acid; blackberry fruit, fennel, sweet toasty oak, crushed-rock mineral; a long, intense finish."
Just 87 cases of the Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon were produced in this 2011 vintage by Relyea-Wood. Their boutique winery sits on Montebello Road in Cupertino, where the gravity flow cellar sits adjacent to the estate vines overlooking Silicon Valley and not far from Ridge Vineyards. The 2011 growing season was fairly cool and the fruit was harvested in late October.
This comes from Ridge's famed estate vineyard, Monte Bello, which boasts fractured limestone soils over decomposing Franciscan green stone mixed with clay and loam. Until 2009 this was bottled simply as Santa Cruz Mountains. It's whole cluster pressed and fermented on native yeasts. Winemaker notes: "Translucent gold. Green apple, pear, pineapple, honeysuckle, wet stone. Citrus fruit on entry, lemon zest, lively acid, elegant texture; lingering crushed-rock mineral finish."

96 points Wine & Spirits: "Most of the fruit for this restrained, savory cabernet comes from cuttings Emmett Rixford purportedly sourced from Château Margaux in the 1890s. Martin Ray propagated his own cuttings from that selection to plant in this vineyard's shallow, shale-laced soils at 1,800 feet of elevation in the 1940s and 50s, and later Jeffrey Patterson replanted it in the 1980s with a selection from those vines. Is it just a coincidence that, tasting this blind, my thoughts turned to a 1985 Margaux I tasted recently? Maybe it was the gentle elasticity of the texture, the v ...Read More »
94 points Antonio Galloni: "The 2011 Pinot Noir Upper Picnic emerges from an own-rooted parcel planted in 1981. Rich and textured in the glass, the 2011 boasts superb depth for the year. Cinnamon, cloves, dried rose petal, mint and leather wrap around a core of expressive fruit in a hauntingly beautiful, vivid Pinot that delivers the very best of the vintage. There is so much to like here, including the wine's effortless, deceptive structure and depth." (7/2014)91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The most pretty, elegant and perfumed of the three, the 2011 Pinot Noir Upper Picnic Block Spring Ridge Vineyard offers fab ...Read More »
Kathryn Kennedy's stature in the Santa Cruz Mountains enables the producer to have access to the best fruit from the finest small vineyards in the appellation. These growers even include residential homeowners whose grapes arrive at the crush pad in very small lots. Limited in production, the Small Lot Cabernet is vinified using the same small-scale techniques employed for Kathryn Kennedy's estate wine. Aged in a combination of French and American oak, this wine shows classic Santa Cruz Mountains brambly black fruits with woodsy spice and distinct minera... Read More »
92 points Antonio Galloni: "Crushed flowers, sweet red berries, mint, autumn leaves and cinnamon are some of the many notes that lift from the glass in the 2011 Pinot Noir Hidden Block. Savory and incredibly perfumed in the glass, the 2011 captures the essence of this cool, late-ripening vintage in its mid-weight personality. The 2011 is delicate and even a touch fragile, but it is also exceptionally beautiful." (7/2014)92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "My favorite of the 2011s, the Pinot Noir Hidden Block Spring Ridge Vineyard has a light ruby color as well as Burgundian notes of forest floor, wild strawberries, po ...Read More »
96 points Antonio Galloni: "The 2013 Chardonnay Bee Block is the creamiest and most expansive of the three Varner Chardonnays. Pastry, lemon oil, honey, wild flowers and mint are some of the many aromas and flavors that develop in the glass. While the Amphitheater Block and Home Block could use another year or two in bottle, the Bee Block is already quite open and expressive. There is so much to like here. Bob and Jim Varner have turned out another magnificent set of wines at Varner and Neely. Vintage 2013 appears to have favored the Chardonnays - which are truly superb - over the ...Read More »
90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Sour cranberry juice aromas mix with wet slate, strawberry soda, black olives and charred beets on this bottling from historic Mount Eden’s more affordable series. It’s crisp and clean once sipped, with ripe cranberry fruit picking up oregano and marjoram herbs and a nice tartness on the back end." (12/2014) Antonio Galloni: "The 2012 Pinot Noir is a pretty, silky wine with plenty of near term appeal. Sweet red berries, flowers and spices meld together nicely in the glass. Overall, the Domaine Eden Pinot is forward, bright and nicely done." (7/2014) Wine & Spirits: "**Best Buy** This comes f ...Read More »
From Alfaro Family Vineyards & Winery, located in the up-and-coming Corralitos area in the southern end of the Santa Cruz Mountains appellation and close to the cool Monterey Bay. One-time residents of the area might recognize this as another delicious product from the founders of the original Alfaro's Bakery! From the producer: "Ruby in color, medium in body. Bright cherry and raspberry on the nose, with abundant Bing cherry, spice and vanilla flavors on the palate. This wine has well-integrated tannins and refreshing acidity. Aged 8 months in 25% new... 92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Asian pear, crisp lime juice and crushed chalk show on the nose of this very restrained wine from one of the region’s top-tier producers. The palate is framed in lively acidity and strong minerality, presenting flavors of white rocks, lemon peel and brie rind. A nice amount of grip will ensure some aging potential too" (8/2015)91 points Antonio Galloni: "Peach, almond, apricot and spices meld together in the 2012 Chardonnay Santa Cruz Mountains. Sweet honeyed and floral notes add lift in a crystalline, entry-level offering that delivers the goods and then some. Drink this supple Cha ...Read More »
95 points Antonio Galloni: "Varner's Chardonnay Amphitheater Block is rich, ample and super-expressive. Lemon peel, almonds, chamomile, earthiness, dried apricot and sage meld together effortlessly. The 2013 Amphitheater is a classic Varner Chardonnay built on phenolic intensity and plenty of savory/floral notes that add nuance, while the fruit is pushed a bit into the background. Bob and Jim Varner have turned out another magnificent set of wines at Varner and Neely. Vintage 2013 appears to have favored the Chardonnays - which are truly superb - over the Pinots. 93 points Antonio Galloni: "Almonds, tangerine, apricot pit and smoke meld together in the 2013 Chardonnay Mount Harlan. The flavors are bold, intense and racy, but there is plenty of underlying energy and tension in support. The 2013 spent ten months in French oak barrels, 30% new. (Antonio Galloni)" (1/2015)93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Josh Jensen’s 40 years of experience result in an expert wine that subtly delivers a touch of everything needed, but nothing in excess. The nose boasts scorched peach flesh at the core with squeezed lime on the edges, and the palate offers apple skin, nectarine flesh and lime z ...Read More »
92 points Antonio Galloni: "The 2012 Chardonnay Estate is utterly impeccable. Lemon, white, flowers, spices, yellow stone fruits, smoke and slate open up nicely in the glass. Readers can look forward to at least a handful of years of fabulous drinking in this resonant, beautifully layered Chardonnay from Ridge. The Estate spent a total of 15 months in American oak, on the longer side by California standards. It exhibits notes o ...Read More »
91 points Antonio Galloni: "The 2012 Chardonnay is a beautiful, open-knit wine to drink now and over the next handful of years. Hints of orange peel and mint add character to this classy, understated Chardonnay. The style is all about textural softness and polish. The 2012 is about 60% declassified juice from the Mount Eden program and 40% juice from the Domaine Eden property itself. Jeffrey Patterson is one of the most soft-spoken winemakers in California, but don't let that fool you; he is a man of deeply held convictions, with strong views that inform all of his wines. The grapes come entirely from a dry-farmed, 2 acre vineyard in Bonny Doon, which lies on a sandy mountain slope at 1,800 feet elevation and about 5 miles from the ocean. The grapes were picked on September 14 at 23.9 degrees Brix, 0.8 total acidity, and 3.4 pH. The wine rested for nearly two years in 60 gallon French oak barrels. There are only 330 cases.
97 points Antonio Galloni: "The 2013 Chardonnay Holly's Cuvée presents an exotic mélange of tropical-infused fruit, smoke, butter, pastry and orange blossom, all in a rich, creamy style that offers considerable near and medium-term appeal. The oily, viscous finish alone is striking. Once again I am deeply impressed with the Holly's Cuvée, an absolutely stunning wine that appears to have little in common with the three Varner Chardonnays from which it is composed. Don't ask me why that is; I don't really know the answer. In 2013, the blend is 64% Bee Block, 29% Amphitheater Block an ...Read More »
92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright ruby-red. Vibrant aromas of boysenberry, iron and mocha. Dense but tightly wound and not overly sweet; has a silky texture despite possessing a strong acid spine. Finishes with palate-cleansing acids and a late spicy character. This very young wine will need a good decade of cellaring, but even today there are no rough edges." (6/2002)92 points Wine Spectator: "(Collectibles Designation) A wine of great balance, finesse and grace. Well-focused, the ripe, tart, rich blackberry and currant fruit is intense yet elegant, picking up earthy, mineral and sage notes, and finishing w ...Read More »

96 points Antonio Galloni: "A big, powerful wine, the 2013 Chardonnay Home Block hits the palate with serious depth. The flavors are bright and focused throughout, but it is the wine's phenolic intensity that really stands out today. Orchard fruit, white flowers, pepper and mint all lend an element of freshness to the vivacious, structured finish. This is a superb showing from the Varner brothers. The 2013 can be enjoyed now but it also has enough energy and structure to drink well for a number of years. Wine Spectator: "Sleek and supple, with notes of succulent cherry, cedar and fresh herb. Drink now through 2017." (10/2014)
92 points Antonio Galloni: "Dark red cherries, game, menthol, smoke, tobacco and licorice take shape in the 2011 Pinot Noir Upper Picnic. Here the style is decidedly gamy. Licorice, earthiness and smoke add complexity as the wine fleshes out on broad-shouldered, intense, savory finish. This is a rare 2011 Pinot that needs more time in bottle to fully unwind. With time in the glass, some of the wilder notes blow off, so readers should plan on giving the Upper Picnic a good bit of air." (7/2014)90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "There are a scant 146 cases of Varner's 2011 Pinot Noir Picnic Block Spring Ridge Vineyard, ...Read More »
Bright and vibrant and orange in color with perfect clarity. Almost Neon in appearance. The nose is has aromas of citrus peel, jasmine, rose, fresh cut grass, black tea and honey. Connoisseurs Guide: "Nice, clean, well-defined cassis-like fruit and complementary oak spice are offered in the youthful, well-filled and keenly focused aromas. Firm, slightly supple and still fairly tight, this on e tastes and feels like good young Cabernet Sauvignon. 2000 Ridge "Monte Bello" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon
Bid on this bottle of 2000 Ridge "Monte Bello" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon (95AG, 92ST, 90RP). Antonio Galloni: "Do you want the good news or the bad news? Well, Ridge's 2000 Monte Bello is still not ready to drink. Huge, rich and voluptuous, but backed up be serious structure, the 2000 is still a very, very young wine. Readers who own the 2000 should be thrilled. With time in the glass, the 2000 starts to open up a little bit aromatically, but the tannins remain imposing. Hints of tobacco, iron, smoke, savory herbs, leather and licorice all add nuance on the close. This dramatic, brooding Monte Bello will likely drink well for another three decades. In 2000, Montebello is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc. " (07/2013)

It was planted in 1999 and is located in the Vine Hill area near the original Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyards winery on Jarvis Road (current owner Jeff Emery sold the original winery in 2004). This vineyard yields complex, earthy Pinot Noir with a solid sense of Santa Cruz Mountains terroir. For fans of Pinot with character and complexity, this has a lot to offer. This wine combines Pinot Noir from David Bruce's Estate vineyard and that of several small family-owned vineyards. All of these quality oriented vineyard sites benefit from the cooling influences of the Pacific Ocean extending our growing season, allowing Pinot Noir to achieve mature flavors without becoming overripe. The Estate vineyard adds a solid backbone structure to hold the dense black cherry fruit it contributes.

What the hell is this? The true garagiste of SoCal craft distillation has released something totally unique and perfectly delicious. The true spirit of SoCal, Stark Distillery's wacky orange brandy is everything you'd expect it to be and nothing you fear it could be. This is pure distillate of orange & orange juice that really delivers like no other spirit in the store.
95 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Vivid ruby-red. Intensely perfumed, mineral-driven red berry, blood orange and potpourri aromas are complemented by deeper-pitched notes of cola and smoky Indian spices. Sweet, focused and light on its feet, offering intense raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and a silky, seamless texture.
