2009 Lestruelle, Médoc (1.5L) Top Pick!
2009 Lestruelle, Médoc (1.5L)

90 points Wine Spectator: "Nicely toasty, with vanilla and espresso notes up front, but the core of raspberry, blackberry and boysenberry fruit rushes in behind it, with a long, licorice-filled finish. Should settle in nicely. Stéphane Derenoncourt consulting here. Best from 2012 through 2017." (3/2012) Jancis Robinson: "Light crimson. Smells sweet and light. Very forward and rather soft but lots of fun. Fine tannins perceptible only on the very end of the palate." 2012 Seigneurs d'Aiguilhe, Côtes de Castillon Top Pick!
2012 Seigneurs d'Aiguilhe, Côtes de Castillon

This is the second wine from Château d'Aiguilhe, in the far east of Bordeaux. Proprietor and winemaker Stephan von Neipperg is also responsible for the greatness that lies in each bottle of Château Canon-La-Gaffelière, Clos l'Oratoire, Château Peyreau and La Mondotte. The cepage is overwhelmingly Merlot, with a small percentage of Cabernet Franc. The property dates back to the 12th century and is linked to the Knights Templar. The current château, a "fortified farmhouse," was built in the 13th century. The Right Bank terroir, with its clay-limestone soil... Read More »

2007 La Prade, Cotes de Francs Top Pick!
2007 La Prade, Cotes de Francs

Wine Spectator: "Aromas of licorice, tar and some blackberry lead to a medium body, with light tannins and a fruity, delicate finish." K&L Notes: Château La Prade, just four and a half hectares, was purchased by the Thienpont family in 2000. Despite the tiny size, part of the vineyards are on the limestone plateau and the rest are on a south-facing slope rich in iron. This somewhat unique terroir results in a rich Merlot-dominated blend with great structure. We tasted this wine on our April 2014 Bordeaux trip and bought it on the spot. Delicious, fruit-forward wine to enjoy for th... Read More »

Better than 2009. Try in 2017." (2/2013)92 points Wine Spectator: "This delivers the profile of the vintage, with spice-infused raspberry, boysenberry and blackberry fruit coursing along nicely, followed by delineated anise and spice notes, all carried by a racy graphite spine. (RH)" (6/2013) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This appears to be an attractive, elegant, strong effort from Tertre-Daugay. Dark spices, crème de cassis, new leather, mint and licorice meld together in a dark, sumptuous St.-Emilion built on pure depth and resonance. Suave, polished tannins convey an overall impression of creaminess. This clay-rich terroir delivers considerable breath. This is a terrific showing from proprietor Hélène Garcin and consulting winemaker Alain Raynaud. The blend is 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc." It should drink well for 15-20 years. This will be a sleeper of the vintage. A superstar of the vintage (not surprising given how successful the proprietors, the Decoster family, have been over the last decade or more), this 58-acre vineyard located near the village of St.-Etienne de Lisse enjoyed yields of 34 hectoliters per hectare. We loved this wine on our April 2012 Bordeaux trip. A 2010 with lots of sweetness and forward fruit. Blackberries abound here. Great value. (2/2013)91 points Wine Enthusiast: "*Cellar Selection* A powerful selection, this is dominated by tannins. Under the firm structure, there is a fruity aspect that will develop. It has the potential to evolve into a full-bodied, intense wine that maintains a sense of elegance." (3/2013)90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Consistently better than its humble appe ...Read More »

2009 Cap de Faugeres, Côtes de Castillon (3L)

91 points James Suckling: "This is pretty, earthy and spicy, with blueberry and blackberry character. Full body, with polished tannins and a lively finish. The dried citrus fruit really comes through here. Better in 2015, but so delicious now." (2/2012)91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 is possibly the best Cap de Faugeres yet made, a sleeper of the vintage, and a realistically priced one at that. A blend of 85% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon that hit 14% natural alcohol, the wine displays loads of charcoal, blackberry, espresso roast and white chocolate. It is full-bodied, unctuo ...Read More »

2010 Haut Prieur, Côtes de Bordeaux "Vielles Vignes"

Wine Enthusiast: "The wine is sweet, very rich and smooth. Firm tannins are cushioned by the ripe berry and red plum fruits to give a spicy wine with touches of wood, finishing with pepper from the alcohol. Drink from 2017." (10/2014) K&L Notes: A lovely wine from the Cotes de Blaye. Plenty of sweet blackberry fruit. Elegant and delicious now. Will cellar well for five plus years. Along the same lines as the 2009, but with more strength on the palate. Superb value.

1994 L'Evangile, Pomerol

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the vintage’s most notable successes, l’Evangile’s 1994 has a dense plum/ruby color, a sweet nose of licorice, black raspberry, and currant with a hint of roasted herbs and damp soil. Medium to full-bodied, very opulent, it has considerable richness in the front end and mid-section. Like most of the best 1994s, the one defect is the lack of sweetness and the relatively dry, tannic finish. Nevertheless, this is top-notch stuff from a vintage that provides many good surprises, although the style of the wines tend to be relatively firm, muscular, and ...Read More »

2010 Arnauton, Fronsac

91 points James Suckling: "A solid structure of blueberry, plum and spices. Full and chewy. Structured and dense. Needs another four or five years of bottle age." (3/2013)90 points Wine Spectator: "Lively, with a taut plum skin frame that eventually melds nicely into the core of raspberry, warm cherry compote and red currant fruit. Charcoal and chalk lend definition and length to the finish, which is well-packed, but racy overall. Drink now through 2020. (Web Only—2013)" Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2010 Arnauton, a blend of 98% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc that came in it at 14.75% natural alcohol, displays a deep ruby color and load ...Read More »

2000 La Grange Neuve de Figeac, St-Emilion

A fabulous year for merlot and the right bank Bordeaux. This wine is silky smooth with plenty of stuffing for the cellar. And it is priced fairly.

1985 Cheval Blanc, St-Emilion

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A rather seductive style of Cheval Blanc that has been delicious from its youth, this wine continues to develop beautifully, and although it seems to have attained full maturity, the wine shows plenty of sweet plum, mocha, coffee, and black currant fruit intermixed with some menthol, chocolate, and cola. The wine is lush, medium to full-bodied, very soft, and ideal for drinking now and over the next 5-7 years. Last tasted, 11/02." (1/2003)92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Very bright red. Ripe red cherry, plums macerated in alcohol and a floral element on the delicate nose. Then rich, r ...Read More »

2003 Clos les Lunelles, Castillon

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This 21+ acre vineyard planted on a clay and limestone plateau consists of 38-year-old Merlot (80%), Cabernet Franc (10%), and Cabernet Sauvignon (10%). It was acquired by Gerard and Chantal Perse in 2001, and in less than two years has become the reference point winery for the Cotes de Castillon ... not surprising in view of the commitment to excellence exhibited by the Perses. Made from tiny yields of less than 20 hectoliters per hectare, the blockbuster 2003 tips the scales at 13.5% alcohol. It reveals a peppery, spicy, incense-laced bouquet interwove ...Read More »

2000 La Conseillante, Pomerol

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "La Conseillante made an excellent wine in 2001, another great one in 2005, and the estate hit home runs in both 2008 and, above all, in 2009. In fact, the latter vintage may well end up being the modern-day reference point for La Conseillante. Nevertheless, there’s a lot to be said for this 2000. An elegant, gentle style that is never a blockbuster, the 2000 La Conseillante has a deep ruby/plum/purple color and an unbelievably expressive nose of sweet kirsch liqueur intermixed with raspberries, incense, toast, and licorice. Full-bodied yet ethereal in th ...Read More »
