2013 Vasco Urbano Wine Co. "Brunswick" Livermore Valley Petite Sirah Top Pick!
2013 Vasco Urbano Wine Co. "Brunswick" Livermore Valley Petite Sirah

From the winery: "Rich and dense, the 2013 Brunswick Petite Sirah is a beautiful expression of a world class vineyard. Aromatics of fresh black cherries, blueberry cobbler, and dark chocolate, the wine hits the palate with a rush of accompanying flavors. The wine crosses the mid palate and fills the mouth with balanced acid and tannins to match the wines' density. Enjoy with grilled anything, or on a cool autumn evening on the patio. Pack a toothbrush!"

Bolinas-based Sean Thackrey has made a Petite Sirah from the Eaglepoint Ranch since 1997, and are we glad he has! This is a wine to put away in your cellar (or closet) for however long you can stand it! When you do get around to opening it, watch it explode from the glass and change over the hour or two it takes for you two drink the bottle, offering such an array of aromas and flavors it is impossible to catalog them here. 2013 Jaffurs "Thompson Vineyard" Santa Barbara County Petite Sirah

93-95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Petite Sirah looks to be another killer vintage of this cuvee. First made in 2003, this 2013 offers an inky purple color to go with deep, decadent dark fruits, full-bodied richness and depth, and plenty of fine tannin. It’s a beauty to drink over the coming decade or so. Making their wine in the town of Santa Barbara, Craig Jaffurs and David Yates continue to make a bevy of outstanding wines, all of which remain reasonably priced. Both their 2011s and 2012s are made in a fresher, lighter-weight style that highlights purity and finesse over ric ...Read More »

2003 Turley "Hayne Vineyard" Napa Valley Petite Syrah

93-95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "(Note from 02/2005 review, re-reviewed with no new note in 06/2005) The 2003 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard displays the telltale squid ink-like color with some purple hues, and a stupendous nose of pure, black fruits intermixed with minerals, licorice, and incense. Full-bodied, with massively extracted flavors but incredibly well-balanced and vibrant, this wine needs 5-10 years of bottle-age and should age effortlessly for a quarter of a century. (RP)" (2/2005)94 points Wine Enthusiast: "What an aroma. So Côte-Rôtie, so powerful and rich, yet so refined. Masses of white pepper, cassis ...Read More »

2012 Le P'tit Paysan Monterey County Petite Sirah

The San Antonio Valley is in remote southwestern Monterey County, on the leeward side of the Ventana Range. We pick Petite Sirah from two blocks in the Y-Ranch section of the Pierce Vineyard. Block 1 is a west facing rocky hillside littered with chunks of white limestone, which at times are as large as two fists. Block 3 is a southeast facing slope where decomposed granite dominates the soils. Picked at atypically low sugars for the variety. Fermented in small lots with some stem inclusion and some native yeasts. Aged on lees in less than 10% new oak. Fr... Read More »

2006 Sean Thackrey "Sirius Eaglepoint Ranch" Mendocino Petite Sirah

95+ points Robert Parker: "The stunning 2006 Sirius, a Petite Sirah from the Eaglepoint Ranch that produced the gorgeous Sangiovese, is about as good as Petite Sirah gets in California. Long-time readers know I am a big fan of this underrated varietal in the Golden State, which also has a terrific track record of aging for 20-30 or more years when made in the manner such as Sean Thackrey's Sirius. This wine has no hard edges but is stacked and packed with black and blue fruits, camphor, and hints of pepper and spice. Moreover, the purity of the wine, the... Read More »

2010 Sean Thackrey "Sirius Eaglepoint Ranch" Mendocino Petite Sirah

There is a "cult" surrounding Sean Thackrey's wines, and it's not the kind of cult wine that's advertised with a big sign on Highway 29 in the middle of the Napa Valley; nor do Thackrey's distinctive, allocated wines fetch unreal sums per bottle. The Sirius Petite Sirah comes from Eaglepoint Ranch, just north of Ukiah in Mendocino County. Typically full-bodied and ripe in the Thackrey style, it's a must-have for PS lovers and for anyone interested in surveying the eccentric, outlier winemakers of California.

2008 Sean Thackrey "Sirius Eaglepoint Ranch" Mendocino Petite Sirah

93 points from Wine Enthusiast Magazine: "Eaglepoint Ranch has been source to powerful red wines for many years, and here’s another one. It impressives for the volume of tannins and fruity ripeness. Swamps the mouth with blackberry and cherry marmalade, bacon, pepper spice and smoky oak flavors that are huge, yet balanced in tannins, oak and acidity. The alcohol is 15.2%. 2009 Sean Thackrey "Sirius Eaglepoint Ranch" Mendocino Petite Sirah

"Sirius" is right, as in, this is some SERIOUSLY GOOD Petite Sirah. Sourced from the Eaglepoint Ranch in Mendocino, the 2009 "Sirius" Petite Sirah from this eccentric Bolinas winemaker offers an intense nose of red and black cherry, along with hints of sage, oregano, and explosion of exotic herbs and spices. It is concentrated and full-bodied, but maintains a fine tension between richness, acidity, and tannic power. Oak is not a dominant factor here; this wine is all about complex aromas and the varietal's naturally rich texture. Minerals and tannins gri... Read More »

Opaque purple to the rim, with a big, sweet nose of blackberries, white flowers, crushed rocks, vanilla, and smoke, ferociously tannic but enormously concentrated and extracted, this wine needs 5-6 years of bottle age and will handsomely repay two decades of aging." (12/05) 92 points Wine Spectator: "Lots of exotic spice, wood and hazelnut aromas lead to a rich, supple, polished core of harmonious wild berry and blackberry fruit. 2009 Madrigal Napa Valley Petite Sirah

Chris Madrigal is the proprietor and grandson of the founder of Madrigal Family Winery, and their winemaker is Ed Sbragia. From the winery: "The nose is indicative of a powerful red wine. An initial impression of game, spice and slight reduction, gives way to a core of prevailing blueberry / blackberry fruit aromas. In the mouth the Petite Sirah shows as a compelling red wine in its youth. The initial sensation is more textural with tannin and astringency showing first, but quickly balanced out by an intense core of rich black fruit. The finish is persis... Read More »

1998 Behrens & Hitchcock 'Barcini Vineyard' Napa Valley Petite Sirah

Often extremely tannic and tough when young, the Petite from Barcini is in the running for the longest lived P.S. made! Parker gave the 1999 Barcini 89-91 points and this review: "The wine is a dense purple color, with notes of earth, smoke, licorice, and black fruits. Quite sweet on the attack, full-bodied, with rustic tannin in the finish, this wine will require 5-6 years of cellaring and keep for up to two decades."

(10/2014) Wine Spectator: "Shows an appealing juiciness to the blackberry, blueberry and raspberry flavors, with thick, velvety tannins and clove, vanilla bean, tobacco and crushed rock details. 2010 Retro Cellars Howell Mountain Petite Sirah

91 points Antonio Galloni: "The 2010 Petite Syrah is a dark, brooding beauty. Black cherries, plums, licorice, new leather and menthol. Time in bottle has softened some of the contours, something that Petite can always benefit from. The 2010 was made from Randy Dunn's Park Muscatine Vineyard, the source of Dunn's own 1990s Petite. Mike and Kara Dunn brought in their fruit in November and gave the wine 30 months in barrel. Dollops of Zinfandel, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon round out this distinctive Howell Mountain Petite Sirah. The 2010 is quite a bit more expressive than it was la ...Read More »

2000 David Bruce Central Coast Petite Sirah

Stretching in a narrow band from Santa Barbara to the San Francisco Bay,the Central Coast region is characterized by the cooling influences of the Pacific Ocean. These grapes come from several vineyards in Paso Robles and southern Monterey. The resulting components display notable differences, some exuding bright,spice-tinged fruit while others are jammy, earthy and dense. The blend in many ways exceeds the sum of these parts, offering blackberry, blueberry and white pepper aromas, with a supple and balanced feel coming from our gentle handling of the fruit.Limi... 2007 Sean Thackrey "Sirius Eaglepoint Ranch" Mendocino Petite Sirah

Finding information to share about Sean Thackrey's wines is about as challenging as locating Thackrey's Bolinas property, which is located an hour north of San Francisco in western Marin County. Thackrey's rustic winery-in-a-eucalyptus grove is only accessible via a twisting road that ends at the Pacific's edge, according to the Wine Spectator. The highly-allocated results are made in Thackrey's distinctive style: powerful and intense with rugged tannins using methods culled from ancient texts, mostly translated (Thackrey reads seven languages). 2011 T-Vine Napa Valley Petite Sirah

In the northern Napa Valley area of Calistoga, T-Vine Cellars sources fruit from old vineyards and longtime growers -- only growers whose names end in a vowel, they joke. For this Petite Sirah, T-Vine sourced from three vineyards: the legendary Nichelini family's vineyards of Chiles Valley, Calistoga's Fredianis, and Rudy Mancini. 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The inky blue/purple-colored 2001 Petite Syrah Rattlesnake Acres (a mere 13.2% alcohol) reveals a promising nose of licorice, blackberries, minerals, and flowers. This stacked and packed, full-bodied, enormously endowed effort is relatively accessible for Petite Sirah, but ideally should have 5-6 more years of cellaring. It will keep for two decades." With coaxing, it offers up scents of pepper, incense, blackberries, and crushed rocks, but the wine is extremely tannic and impenetrable. Forget it for a decade at least. Juicy but very tightly wound, with exotic but reticent dark fruit flavors lifted by peach pit and pepper. Finishes impressively long, but with serious tannins that call for at least a few years of aging. Like the Pesenti and Turley Estate examples, this should evolve nicely for at least 12 to 15 years."
