1976 Kenwood "Artist Series" Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon

From the winery: "Kenwood Vineyards' second Artist Series Cabernet Sauvignon release features 'Table Setting,' by artist Nell Melcher. Nell Melcher thinks of her paintings more in terms of 'situations' than still lifes - situations that touch a nerve of fond remembrance in the viewer. 'I have a knack for putting a still life together so it captures a moment in time.' They are crowded arrangements of ordinary and personal objects that evoke pleasure and delight when grouped together in a certain way - glasses of wine, cut flowers, a magical parrot feather... 1985 Laurel Glen Sonoma Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon

91 points Wine Spectator: "Deep and concentrated with rich, compact currant, plum, cassis fruit that's sweet and fleshy yet tightly wound, lush yet firm and tannic. It's beautifully proporitoned, deliciously fruity, complex, finishing with toasty oak. Best yet from Laurel Glen." (4/1998)90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This wine has consistently been an excellent performer. The fine Laurel Glen winery, which has made even better Cabernet Sauvignons during the decade of the nineties, fashioned a 1985 with plenty of jammy, sweet blackcurrant fruit, an element of smoke, herb, and licorice, full body, a complex, multi ...Read More »

1986 Kenwood "Artist Series" Sonoma Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This wine from Kenwood is a monster Cabernet Sauvignon, exhibiting youthful colors, and huge quantities of fruit, extract, glycerin, and tannin. The 1986 Cabernet Sauvignon Artists Series exhibits an opaque purple/plum-like color with light pink at the rim. Its fragrant bouquet offers scents of underbrush, jammy fruit, cedar, pepper, and herbs. Absolutely colossal in the mouth, with huge amounts of fruit, glycerin, and extract, as well as staggeringly painful levels of tannin, this wine needs another 4-6 years of cellaring. It is a massive example of Cal ...Read More »

1987 Kalin Cellars Reserve Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon

94 points John Gilman: "...The superb and utterly classic nose soars from the glass in a constellation of black cherries, cassis, dried eucalyptus, tobacco, superb, stony minerality, a lovely touch of weediness (which I find absolutely proper with Cabernets in this stage of development- in fact, if a wine does not display this characteristic, I often wonder what has been done to suppress this natural side of Cabernet Sauvignon!) and a gentle framing of cedar. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, complex and beautifully balanced, with superb focus... Read More »

1988 Arrowood Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon

According to the Wine Spectator: "Offers more up-front fruitiness than most 1988s, but shares the tannic dryness of the vintage on the finish. In between, there's plenty of ripe plum, black cherry, anise and cedary notes that stay focused.--1988 California Cabernet Retrospective." (11/98)

1988 Kalin Cellars Reserve Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon

John Gilman: "...One has to recognize that the high octane, "hedonistic" side of California Cabernet is made out of concious choice, rather than forced by circumstance, and is produced either because the winemaker and/or proprietor really likes this kind of over the top jam juice or thinks that they can make more money crafting these kind of wines. Of course, with alcohol levels well under thirteen percent, classic Cabernet's such as Kalin's start out life with plenty of structure and are not going to win any beauty pageants out of the blocks these days!... 1991 Arrowood Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1991 Cabernet Sauvignon (a fall release) may turn out to be Arrowood's finest regular bottling of Cabernet Sauvignon. Made from a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Malbec, this deeply-colored wine possesses a rich, fragrant nose of cassis, herbs, and subtle oak. Sweet, ripe, and medium to full-bodied, with well-delineated acidity and moderate tannin, this beautifully-made, authoritatively-flavored, elegant wine should drink well for 15 or more years. 1993 Ravenswood "Pickberry" Sonoma Mountain Bordeaux Blend Back In Stock!
1993 Ravenswood "Pickberry" Sonoma Mountain Bordeaux Blend

91-94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Ravenswood's wines are not for those tasters seeking subtle, lighter-styled offerings. The impressively built, opaque purple-colored 1993 Pickberry is an extremely powerful, chewy wine with considerable fruit extraction, huge body, high tannin, and superb purity and richness. It requires 5-6 years of cellaring and will drink well for 20+ years. It may turn out to be as good as the glorious 1992. For now, I would give the 1992 a slight edge because its fruit quality and texture provide more fat and intensity. However, that is splitting straws." (4/1995)

Drink now through 2012." (10/2000) Wine Enthusiast: "Crisp in the nose, with nuances of graham cracker, menthol, mushroom and herbs. 1997 Arrowood "Réserve Spéciale" Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon

97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "It sounds preposterous, but when I put my nose in the 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Speciale, it reminded me of the 1996 Latour. California Cabernets are bigger, weightier efforts than most Bordeaux, so the comparison ends with the aromatics. There are 1,611 cases of this profound Cabernet Sauvignon, which spent 28 months in primarily French oak (a tiny bit of American oak was utilized), and was bottled with neither fining nor filtration. Its dense black/purple color is accompanied by layers of cassis, cedar-tinged fruit, and abundant spice. Muscular, ...Read More »

Sixty-eight percent of the fruit comes from Sonoma and 32% from Napa. It exhibits classic notes of creme de cassis, licorice, cedarwood, incense and a hint of toasty oak in the background. Pure, primary black fruit and mineral flavors framed and enlivened by surprisingly juicy acidity. Very firmly built, vibrant wine with the structure to reward aging. Winemaker Bob Foley noted that Pride's cabernet had better than usual acidity in 2004, and certainly more than in 2003 or 2002; the harvest here lasted into early November. It is intense, focused, deep, tight and open at the same time, loaded with sweet curranty perfumes and happily endowed with rich oak in the nose, and it is full and supple to start on the palate and tannic to finish. Its inviting underbelly is not to be ignored as it gives the wine a certain drinkability even now when paired with chunks of grilled meat, but its convincing fruit and its solidity promise to keep the wine in good stead for years of rewarding aging." The Merlot gives the wine much of its suppleness, while the Cabernet adds the structure and pure mountain tannin. Even with all of its richness, the 2009 remains light on its feet for such a big wine. The 2009 boasts striking balance and tons of harmony.
