1999 Bodegas Puelles Gran Reserva Rioja Top Pick!
1999 Bodegas Puelles Gran Reserva Rioja

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1999 Gran Reserva has an enticing red cherry, soy and cedar-scented bouquet that is reminiscent of an old Burgundy. The palate is very well-balanced with fine acidity and edgy tannin. There are notes of fresh red cherries and orange rind interlaced by leather on the tart, highly enjoyable, zesty finish. Drink now-2018. (NM)" (8/2012) K&L Notes: Wow--this is spectacular Gran Reserva! Made in a traditional style with earthy red fruit aromas, and in this relatively cooler, damper vintage, a slightly Burgundian profile. The wine features good acidity, minerality, and... 2009 Bodegas Casa Juan Señor de Lesmos Crianza Rioja

As is the case with so many other great spots in Spain, Bodega Casa Juan is located opposite the village church, in the beautiful walled pueblo of Laguardia. The winery is a converted flour mill, featuring concrete tanks for fermenting and blending the wine, and for ageing, barrels that are used for up to seven years. These are traditional Riojas in elaboration and spirit, though the site specificity of their Laguardia and Villabuena vineyards confers a fruit character all its own to these wines. And what fruit! 2010 Bodegas Puelles Crianza Rioja Top Pick!
2010 Bodegas Puelles Crianza Rioja

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2010 Crianza is produced with 100% destemmed Tempranillo grapes fermented in inox and aged for one year in barriques (50% French, 50% American) is a little closed in the nose, seems like a serious wine, with a mix of red and black fruit and the wood well-integrated in the wine. Round in the palate, with clean flavors, supple, balanced, very Rioja. It grows on you as it also improves with air and gets more focused. 30,000 bottles were produced. A great value Crianza to buy by the case! Drink 2014-2018." (8/2012) K&L Notes: A K&L Direct Import! Jesús Puelles is one... Read More »

Spicy, sweet red fruit flavors are complemented by vanilla, mocha and licorice, with a smoky note sneaking in on the back half. Finishes with an echo of vanilla, soft tannins and very good persistence." (9/2013) Jancis Robinson: "Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo, Graciano. 2013 Pedro Martinez Alesanco Tempranillo Rioja

Based in the Rioja Alta village of Badarán, Martínez Alesanco is a truly original bodega producing tasty, characterful wine for laughably low prices. They are entirely self reliant in grapes, all of which are grown in their home village of Badarán, one of the coldest zones of Rioja Alta. Drink now through 2025." (9/2013)93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Opaque ruby. Sexy, oak-spiced aromas of red- and blackcurrant, cherry and vanilla, with a bright floral accent. 1982 Bodegas Olarra "Cerro Añón" Reserva Rioja Top Pick!
1982 Bodegas Olarra "Cerro Añón" Reserva Rioja

When this bottle is on, it has to be one of my all time favorite examples of mature Rioja. Winemaker Ezequiel "El Brujo" García (ex Cune in the 1960's and a portion of the 70's) described the Cerro Añon to me as being more masculine, a very old school Riojano way of referring to a wine as "Burgundian" (think: LdH Viña Bosconia, always in the Burgundy bottle). Accorindg to García, Cerro Añón always had a hefty chunk of Mazuelo and some Garnacha to brighten things up a bit. I hope you enjoy this wine as much as I have; it's not only great but an interesti... Read More »

2013 Lora Tempranillo Syrah Vino de la Tierra de Castilla

Lora is a blend of certified organic Tempranillo and Syrah from one of the cooler parts of La Mancha (high up on the plateau not too far from the UNESCO heritage city of Cuenca). This is a delicious red - full of fresh fruited drinkability, but surprising structure from the minerality and balanced acidity. The winemaker and person who carefully sources this great organic fruit is none other than our friend Miguel Merino Navajas, son of Miguel Merino of Rioja fame! 2006 Bodegas Muga "Prado Enea" Gran Reserva Rioja Top Pick!
2006 Bodegas Muga "Prado Enea" Gran Reserva Rioja

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2006 Prado Enea is a phenomenal bottle of traditional Rioja at its best. A blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha and the remaining 10% Mazuelo and Graciano aged for a long time in oak and bottled before release. This is a practice quite common from yesteryear, but that is a true rarity today. The technical data provided talks about incredible parameters, 14% alcohol and a pH of 3.39, both extremely low for a warm vintage like 2006. The grapes are sourced from higher-altitude terraced plots where the climate is cooler and drier and the soils are rich ...Read More »

A glass-coating opaque purple, it offers up an alluring bouquet of pain grille, scorched earth, leather, espresso, black cherry, and blackberry liqueur. Layered on the palate, it has tons of spicy, savory fruit, excellent balance, enough stuffing to evolve for another 4-6 years, and a lengthy, pure finish. Their vineyards are located in Rioja Alta, at the base of the Montes Obarenses, and enjoy a unique confluence of Mediterranean, Atlantic, and continental climatic influences. 2007 Bodegas Puelles Rioja Reserva

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2007 Reserva showed a strong reduction when uncorked and should benefit from decanting in advance. Pure Tempranillo, it matured in barrels for 20 months. The nose, after the reduction has blown off, is quite classical but clean showing roasted aromas and hints of dark spices, balsam and perhaps leather. The palate is quite lively, with good, refreshing acidity and fully resolved tannins. 14,000 bottles." (4/2015) K&L Notes: Jesús Puelles is one of the most talented vignerons in Rioja. The light to medium-bodied palate shows fully resolved tannins, great acidity and pure, pungent flavors that linger in the mouth forever and that can only be Rioja. The palate is crisp, with good acidity and length. (LG)" (12/2013) Wine Spectator: "There's good density to the black cherry, leafy and spicy flavors in this balanced red, remaining lively, even delicate, with racy, citrusy acidity, supple tannins and a floral finish." (5/2013) K&L Notes: Composed of the same grapes in the same percentages as the Crianza, the Reserva is a barrel selection of wines that Angel feels can undergo longer aging in barrel and then in bottle. Winemaker Ezequiel "El Brujo" García (ex Cune in the 1960's and a portion of the 70's) described the Añares as an elegant, feminine style. Apparently he would source the fruit for this bottling from great vineyards in prime Rioja Alta villages. It is less fruit forward than the Cerro Añon, spicier, and yet still possessing a unique, Tempranillo driven fruit quality all its own. Made from relatively old vines, the 2012 Pruno is a sexy, opulent, voluptuously textured effort that spent 12 months in two-year-old French oak barrels. Pago del los Capellanes consistently produces some of the tastiest Ribera del Duero wines around. These are modern wines with great fruit expression, as well as classical Tempranillo flavors and Ribera del Duero structure. In this young, 5 month oak aged red, there are typical dark fruited, spicy and licorice inflected aromas which lead to a juicy, rich palate punctuated by nicely built tannins that frame the wine without taking it over. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine, structured tannins that, even at this premature juncture, are obvious. Miguel found success every step of the way, and then decided that rather than retire, he want... Read More »

2009 Viña Real Reserva Rioja

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Reserva, 90% Tempranillo and 10% Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano from Rioja Alavesa, is fermented in stainless steel and aged for 22 months in new oak barriques with frequent rackings (every four months). 2009 is a powerful vintage with an early harvest, especially in Alavesa, but the wine has very good balance and is developing some complexity in the nose with a touch of spices, raw meat and red fruit. The palate displays some fine-grained tannins, ripe fruit and good acidity in a well-built wine. This should age very well. Drink 2016-2022. (LG) ...Read More »

2011 Finca Sobreño Tempranillo Toro

Finca Sobreño has long been a leading producer of great value reds from Toro, and we are excited to have it back in stock. As with other wines from this D.O., tinto del pais (the region's local clone of Tempranillo) is the grape variety, and it shows lots of brooding dark fruit, a typically Castillian, scorched earth, meaty savor, and robust tannin from both grapes and wood. This is not a timid wine! Serve with braised ox tail and fries, or perhaps with a platter of nicely aged, firm sheep's milk cheese and chorizo, the smokier the better! (Joe Manekin, ... 2008 Bodegas LAN Reserva Rioja

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2008 Reserva shows good concentration and fresh aromas of an Atlantic vintage, with quite a traditional profile displaying notes of red fruit, spices, leather and dill, and a medium-bodied palate with intense and clean flavors and a supple finish. This great Reserva wears an attractive price tag. (LG)" (12/2013) Wine Spectator: "The black cherry and plum flavors have a hard-candy character in this polished red, backed by sweet-tart acidity and supported by light, firm tannins. Lively, with a balsamic finish. (Web Only—2014)"

2005 Bodegas Casa Juan Señor de Lesmos Reserva Rioja (1.5L)

92 points James Suckling: "This has a beautiful depth of fruit with spice and dark fruits. Hints of parsley and cilantro. Full and super silky with a long and beautiful finish." (5/2013) K&L Notes: Lesmos is back, and now in magnums, the ideal size for parties and for extended aging in your cellar! Composed of the same grapes in the same percentages as the Crianza, the Reserva is a barrel selection of wines that Angel feels can undergo longer aging in barrel and then in bottle. Aged a total of 27 months in barrels, then into concrete for more than a year, the Reserva also sees bottle aging unt... Read More »

2005 Miguel Merino Gran Reserva Rioja

Miguel Merino makes, as he likes to put it, an "updated classic" style of Rioja, all from his own 2 hectares of vines and several hectares of vineyards owned by a close friend. All the fruit is from sloped vineyards (Miguel is a fan of his slopes) within the cooler climate Rioja Alta town of Briones, which makes his wine a terrific showcase of the terroir (especially in a region where wines blended from various villages are more often the norm). This Gran Reserva is from some of their oldest Tempranillo and Graciano vines, planted in 1931 and 1946. It is... Read More »

2007 Bodegas Riojanas Monte Real Reserva Rioja

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2007 Monte Real Reserva has aromas of cigar ash, forest floor and cherries, and a dusty palate with a slightly dry finish. Drink 2014-2017. (LG)" (12/2013) K&L Notes: Bodegas Riojanas is a more than century old, family-owned winery and one of the early pioneers of modern winemaking in Rioja. Today, you could say that Riojanas is one of the more traditionally oriented wineries in the region. Stylistically, Monte Real is the bolder, riper sibling of Viña Albina, produced from 100% Tempranillo in their hometown of Cenicero. In 2007, Monte Real shows lots of meaty, s... Read More »

2007 Vina Santurnia Reserva Rioja

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Dark red. Wild aromas of dried cherry, beef jerky and dried flowers, with a vanilla quality emerging with air. Smooth and appealingly sweet on the palate, offering focused red fruit flavors and a hint of vanillin oak spice. Closes with good lift and cut and supple tannins that fade smoothly into the fruit." 2010 Bodegas Alejandro Fernandez "Pesquera" Reserva Ribera del Duero

93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep ruby. Explosive, oak-spiced aromas of cherry compote, blackberry, vanilla and potpourri, with a hint of smoked meat slowly emerging with aeration. Smooth, sweet and focused on the palate, offering bitter cherry and blackcurrant flavors that are given lift and spine by juicy acidity. Shows a sexy floral quality on the long, smoky finish, which leaves notes of vanilla and bitter cherry behind." (9/2014) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2010 Reserva with aromas of red and black fruit, feels more Atlantic than Mediterranean, with some hints of coconut and vanilla. The palate is mediu ...Read More »
