Port

Port is a fortified wine made by stopping the fermentation with brandy. The result is a heavy sweet wine, most often red, that is dense, rich and high in alcohol. Port is made all over the world with some great results in Australia and South Africa, but the most famous of these dessert wines come from Portugal. The great port houses (or lodges) below are located along the Duoro River on the steep slate slopes high above the valley floor. There are several styles of port, including Ruby, Tawny, Vintage Character, Late Bottle Vintage, Colheita, and Single Quinta. Vintage ports are made in special years that the houses declare. 2012 Taylor Fladgate "Vargella Single Quinta" Vintage Port

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2012 Quinta de Vargellas Port, a typical Douro blend, was aged in large French oak vats for 24 months and bottled in 2014. It comes in at 103 grams per liter of residual sugar. This opens steely and gripping, with fine acidity, firmness on the finish and enough concentration in this lighter-styled vintage. The best of the trio submitted by Taylor Fladgate this issue, it does everything well and mostly exceeds expectations. It more or less combines a bit of the initial power displayed by the Fonseca and the expressiveness of the Croft, and adds silky ...Read More »

(9/2014)93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2012 Quinta da Roeda Port was bottled in 2014 and comes in at 103 grams per liter of residual sugar. Unctuous and succulent on the finish, which oozes with molten chocolate. Best after 2025." (10/2013)96 points Wine Enthusiast: "Red and black berries bring out the richness of the year, masking the seriously tannic structure. Ramos Pinto White Port

White port is one of the world's most civilized aperitifs, and we here at K&L think that the Ramos Pinto is one of the best. Made from Malvasia Fina and Codega grapes (mostly grown on the Ramos Pinto estate) that are picked quite ripe, this wine is then aged for three years in traditional port barrels called "pipes." Full-bodied and exotic, it is incomparable on the rocks with an orange twist. Since it has had extended barrel age and is fortified, it is no problem to have keep it in the refrigerator for a month after opening it, but I doubt it will last ... Read More »

Fonseca "Bin 27" Port

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Lucid dark ruby color, the Bin 27 has a sweet nose of raisin and fig, complemented by copious dark cherry and black plum. The palate is sweet and spicy on the entry with that fig motif continuing with plush dark chocolate infused black fruit. The finish is short and abrupt, but there is a lingering peppery note to keep customer satisfied. The Bin 27 forms a perfect introduction to the delights of Port. Fonseca "Terra Bella" Reserve Port

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Terra Prima Organic Port is just terrific. The nose is so fresh and well defined with blackcurrant fruit infused with faint touches of mandarin, dark cherries, fresh dates and liquorice. The palate is nicely balanced with slightly tarry black fruit. It offers lifted acidity and a spirituous nature without any loss in tension and there is a pleasant kick of volatility towards the refined, harmonious finish. I appreciate the edginess and tension on this wine, a sense of elegance that I usually associate more with Taylors than with a Fonseca. This comes ...Read More »

It represents a selection of the 131 pipes from a total production of 1,454 and is a blend of 40% Touriga Naçional, 31% Touriga Franca, 6% Sousão and 23% mixture of very old vines. 1992 Taylor Vintage Port (some missing labels)

100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Taylor's 1992 Vintage Port is unquestionably the greatest young port I have ever tasted. It represents the essence of what vintage port can achieve. The color is an opaque black/purple, and the nose offers up fabulously intense aromas of minerals, cassis, blackberries, licorice, and spices, as well as extraordinary purity and penetration. Yet this is still an unformed and infantile wine. If Chateau Latour made a late-harvest Cabernet Sauvignon, I suspect it might smell like this. In the mouth, the wine is out of this world, displaying layer upon layer of ...Read More »

1992 Taylor Vintage Port
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1992 Taylor Vintage Port (100RP, 96WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Taylor's 1992 Vintage Port is unquestionably the greatest young port I have ever tasted. In the mouth, the wine is out of this world, displaying layer upon layer of concentrated black fruits backed by well-integrated tannin and structure. This is a massive, magnificently rich, full-bodied port that will be far more flattering in its youth than were such Taylors as the 1983, 1977, or 1970. It possesses awesome fruit, marvelous intensity, and lavish opulence, all brilliantly well-delineated by the win

Ramos Pinto 30 year-old Tawny Port

94 points Wine Spectator: "Intense, crisp and concentrated, featuring mouthfilling flavors of salted almond, dried apricot and pear tart, supported by plenty of fresh acidity. Very refined, with unctuous ripe citrus, toffee and chocolate flavors that fill the rich finish. Drink now." (10/2013)93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Deep gold in color, this is a finely perfumed, toffee-rich wine, with a tannic edge, wood flavor, intense acidity and great concentration. It's a great example of aged tawny, and it's ready to drink now." (4/2013)90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 30-Year Old Tawny has a mellow bouquet of kirsch, cloves, melted candle wax an ...Read More »

1991 Graham's Vintage Port

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Graham's 1991 Vintage Port gets my nod as the port of the vintage. While keeping in mind that Graham's aims for a sweeter-styled port, there is no doubting the opaque purple/black color, or the explosive nose of black fruits, licorice, spring flowers, and tar. Thick and full-bodied, with a satiny texture and a blockbuster, alcoholic finish, this is a top-notch vintage port. (RP)" (2/1995)93 points Wine Spectator: "Lovely plum and coffee aromas open to a full-bodied palate, with sweet, decadent fruit. Velvety, with a long finish. Lots going on." (5/2005)

2007 Fonseca Vintage Port (375ml)

94 points Wine Spectator: "A subtle yet powerful young Vintage Port, with freshly sliced plum, citrus and mulberry on the nose. Full-bodied and medium sweet, with a solid core of powerful tannins and a long, balanced finish. So tight and reserved. Muscularly structured. Best after 2017." (05/10) 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2007 Fonseca Vintage Port is opaque purple-colored with a high-class perfume of lavender, Asian spices, pencil lead, incense, and an amalgam of black fruits. On the palate it is voluminous with layered, succulent fru... Read More »

1991 Dow's Vintage Port

92 points Wine Spectator: "Perfumed and gorgeous, with flowers, berry and plum. Full-bodied, very sweet and round, with lovely rich fruit and a long finish. A tiny bit of heat, but will come around nicely. Very pretty indeed. Hard not to swallow now. '91/'92 Port retrospective. Best from 2006 through 2014." (5/2005)90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The firmly-structured, moderately tannic, impressively colored and concentrated 1991 Vintage Port is less precocious and more reserved than the 1992 Quinta do Bomfim Vintage Port. It may develop along the lines of the stern but powerful 1977. The wine offers a classic di ...Read More »

Sandeman 40 Year Old Tawny Port

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Dark raisin and dried apricot flavors manifest on this immensely dark, old goldhued wine. Enormous concentration, as with the initially, almost painful acidity that comes through the spirit. This is an old wine, no question, but not too old, one to be savored in sips with all the flavors working at high intensity." (12/2008)91 points Wine Spectator: "Still fresh and zesty, with vibrant citrus and dried mango flavors that offer candied ginger notes. Finishes with plenty of spice notes, along with hints of anise." (12/2010)

Casa de Santa Eufemia 20 Year Old Tawny Port

Produced in tiny quantiities (only 60 cases per year!), from 30 hectares of vines, many of which are extremely old, heirloom varieties, it is no surprise that this 20 year old tawny is our most expensive, but also, arguably, our very best! José Viseu Carvalho coaxes flavors both typical and unique out of his single quinta's exquisite 20 year old tawny. A complex nose of sweet spices and the usual assortment of dried fruits also has an intriguing, celery seed savory side to it. The flavors are lush, spicy and palate coating, with cake batter, vanilla extr... Read More »
