2011 Friedrich Becker Estate Pinot Noir

Coming from one of the top producers of Spatburgunder (Pinot Noir) this "entry level" Pinot is a spicy treat. With the chalky soils in the area, Becker produces some of Germany's finest Pinot Noir. Full of spicy strawberry and bright cherry fruit, just a hint of tobacco and a dusty earthiness and layers of subtle textures tell you that you paid way too little for this offering. Delicious on its own, but also complements heavier seafood, poultry and fine cuts of beef or game.

2011 Dr. Wehrheim Muschelkalk Weisser Burgunder (Pinot Blanc) (Previously $30)

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Aromas of papaya, vanilla custard and hazelnut. The succulent apricot and spice flavors are given shape and life by bright acidity. A serious wine with an austere but pure finish of noteworthy length." (1/2013)

2013 Friedrich Becker "Estate" Pinot Blanc

Regarded as one of Germany's top producers of Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), Friedrich Becker also produces outstanding white wines, including this delicious Pinot Blanc from the limestone soils of the Pfalz. Picked at optimum ripeness with naturally high acidity and fermented in stainless steel, this Pinot Blanc is crisp, clean, and refreshing, with cool melon and stone fruit aromas and flavors underscored by some serious wet stone minerality. Citrus blossom accents add lift to the nose and palate. There's nice weight here, balanced by tangy acidity, leadi... Read More »

2013 Ökonomierat Rebholz Pinot Noir Rosé

This bone-dry rosé from Ökonomierat Rebholz is born of limestone soils of the Pfalz. The grapes are 100% organic, and the estate never chapitalizes their wines at any pradikat level. The light salmon color is free run Spatburgunder (Pinot Noir) juice which has bright natural acidity which will actually allow the wine to cellar for several years. From the importer: "Smoke, spicy flavor, with notes of fresh herbs and pomegranate aromas. Very elegant mineral notes, a very harmonious triad between fresh herbs, steamed garden vegetables and fresh apples. Mine... Read More »

2008 Weingut Pfeffingen Estate Gewurztraminer Spätlese

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Pfeffingen 2008 Gewurztraminer Spatlese looks very sweet on paper with its combination of 40 grams residual sugar and a mere 7.2 grams of acid, but in fact there is an admirable sense of refreshment for the variety and a vintage-typical buoyancy. Lychee, rose petal, black tea, musk, and wood smoke on the nose all follow on a subtly oily palate otherwise dominated by luscious quince preserves. This finishes with surprisingly animated, juicy generosity and at the same time some animalistic intrigue. It will remain a delight for at least the next 7-9 ye ...Read More »

2005 Muller-Catoir Haardter Herzog Rieslaner Auslese (375ml)

90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Pale golden yellow. Exuberant aromas of candied pineapple, acacia blossom and brown spices. The creamy papaya fruit remains refreshing in spite of the wine's sheer density and weight.Very nicely concentrated wine with recurring hints of clove on the finish. Satisfying, but not as spectacular as the 2004." (2/2007)

2001 Muller-Catoir Mussbacher Eselshaut Rieslaner Trockenbeerenauslese (375ml)

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Ominously still and faintly volatile as it sits in the glass, this reveals on the palate an extreme air-dried white raisin character along with subtle, ethereal botrytisin. Extremely dense but not heavy. Grilled peach, pineapple, banana, white raisin, yellow plum, butterscotch and brown spices all well up as the wine catches its breath and begins to show its depth. There is a generous stockpile of lemony acidity to add verve. (DS)" (11/2002)

1986 Weingut Pfeffingen Ungsteiner Honigsäckel Riesling Trockenbeeranauslese (375ml)

The 1986 vintage created elegant, aromatic wines, and the most successful examples were the ones from Pfalz, according to Wine Spectator. This one comes from Weingut Pfeffingen, a historic wine estate, which has been owned and run by the Schnell family since it was established in 1932.

2009 Von Buhl Forster Jesuitengarten Riesling Spatlese (some with signs of seepage)

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Von Buhl pulled way back on the residual sugar in their 2009 Forster Jesuitengarten Riesling Spatlese compared with other recent vintages, and the result is more than sweet enough to support both its decadent, musky floral perfume of peony and heliotrope and its very ripe peach fruit, yet discreet enough to be well-balanced even for immediate consumption. Peach kernel, green herbs, salt, and crushed stone all serve for fascinating counterpoint, and a soothingly creamy texture is allied to refreshing primary juiciness and lift. This ought to delight for a ...Read More »
