90 points Connoisseurs Guide: "Once again taking its place as one of our favorite non-vintaged Bruts, Roederer stands out for its refinement and customary vitality. It marries a bit of citrus and green-apple fruit with incisive, not-too-strident yeast and finds subtle complexities in the form of background minerality. It is fairly tight and very much geared to crispness with a lengthy and wonderfully refreshing finish, and its balance suggests that will hold up nicely for years." (11/2013)90 points Wine & Spirits: "**Best Buy** This is both fresh and substantial, striking a delicious balance between apple-skin s ...Read More »
Wine Enthusiast: "* Best Buy * A tangy grapefruit flavor and refreshing acidity make this a good before-dinner quaff and an apt pairing with seafood. Herbaceous and citrus aromas carry through to the flavors, medium body and good balance." (11/2014) K&L Notes: Husch was founded in Anderson Valley in 1971, and is now run by some of the original Silicon Valley escapees--the family of Hugo Oswald Jr. had been farming pears in Santa Clara Valley and sold their property during the 1970s tech boom! Their Sauvignon Blanc has been a favorite with Husch fans since 1980. This wine was made from... Read More »
From the winery: "With a gorgeous hue of pale pink, our 2014 Rosé jumps out of the glass with crisp red fruit flavors. The supple texture is backed by a vibrant freshness and appealing acidity, making this a wonderfully versatile food wine. The 2014 vintage started dry but abundant February rain came just in time to break the winter draught. Warm spring temperatures encouraged an early budbreak that kept vineyard development ahead of schedule through the entire season. Our harvest was condensed beginning September 3rd and concluding on September 24th. Fo... Read More »
From fruit grown on several sites in Anderson Valley, Tous Ensemble is an immediately appealing Pinot Noir with a crunchy and vigorous red-fruited profile. It is great introduction to the style of winemaker Wells Guthrie, who delivers cool climate terroir which isn't sullied by high alcohol or too much wood. A perfect and long growing season in 2012 saw a two week harvest extending well into October but at only a 13.6% finished alcohol level in the finished wine, which was aged for nine months in neutral French oak. From the winery: "The delicately perfu... Read More »

Antonio Galloni: "The 2013 Tous Ensemble Chardonnay is a pretty, entry-level offering from vineyards in Anderson Valley. Apricot pit, pastry, tangerine peel and lightly honeyed notes flesh out in a soft, nuanced Chardonnay to drink now and over the next few years. I was quite taken with the wines I tasted from Copain and proprietor Wells Guthrie this year. The Tous Ensemble range delivers outstanding value, while the best Syrahs and Pinots soar with exceptional beauty and a sense of weightlessness that is compelling. In particular, several of the 2012 Syrahs are utterly ...Read More »
92 points Wine Spectator: "Sleek and rich, with floral strawberry and sugar cookie aromas and elegant, layered citrus, tart cherry and mineral flavors that linger toward a vibrant, lightly spicy finish." (11/2013)91 points Wine Enthusiast: "This is a mouthfilling, plush-textured, copper colored bubbly with hints of cherry and raspberry in the ripe flavors, firm acidity to balance them and tiny bubbles to keep it all lively. Made with 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay, it finishes with a slightly sweet sensation." (12/2014) Connoisseurs Guide: "There are more than a few Blanc de Noirs bottlings that show a bit of Rosé-like substance ...Read More »
90 points Wine Spectator: "Shows off ripe plum and wild berry flavors, with firm, grippy tannins. Gains depth and richness, adding a touch of dried herb. Needs time. Drink now through 2022." (4/2014) Wine Enthusiast: "Burgundian in its earthy, feral aromas, yet simultaneously jammy in flavor, this boasts gamy undertones and a soft texture. The producer recommends decanting an hour minimum before serving, and this will most likely help to blow off the wine’s rustically wild side." (8/2014) K&L Notes: The 2012 Carpe Diem Anderson Valley Pinot Noir displays admirable power, depth and density with deep aromas of blac... Read More »
Copain's Tous Ensemble wines are approachable, everyday drinkers sourced from fine Mendocino County vineyards. The character is food-friendly and versatile for a pop-and-pour with some pedigree. From the winery: "Our 2012 Tous Ensemble Syrah is a medium-bodied blend of grapes from Mendocino County. The body is lightly textured with medium tannins. Bright acidity accents the palate of dark brambly fruits, hard spices and an earthy core. Drink now, though it will improve over the course of five years."
91 points Wine Spectator: "Exhibits complex aromas of ripe berry, roasted coffee, dried herb and cedary cigar box, holding focus and gaining length and persistence. Drink now through 2022. 15,586 cases made. –JL" (9/2014) Connoisseurs Guide: "A fair bit of creamy oak sits atop a modest measure of nominally ripened cherries in the nose here and vies for attention in this full, somewhat rounded wine's ripe-leaning flavors as well. Full and a bit soft in structure with heat peeking through at the end, this is a moderately rich Pinot best tagged for drinking with light stews and steaks early on." (2/2015) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The ...Read More »
Sourced from Mendocino's Yorkville Highlands, the Sonoma Coast, and a hillside vineyard in the Russian River Valley, this cool climate Pinot Noir reflects winemaker Derek Rahliffs' classic approach. The three lots are vinified separately and the approach in the cellar is low-intervention. From the winery: "Aromas of cherry, herbs, and rose petal dominate the nose, while on the palate the wine is medium bodied with a silky smooth texture and a refreshing acid on the finish." They suggest that it would nicely complement pork tenderloin, salmon and poultry ... Read More »
91 points Wine Enthusiast: "This lovely Mendocino sparkler, crafted from two-thirds Chardonnay and one-third Pinot Noir, has lilting apple and honey aromas buoyed by a thick head of mousse. There is a pleasing follow-through from aroma to flavor and a core of ripe apple. Dry, soft with a long finish, this is a hard-to-resist food-friendly wine ready to pair widely." (12/2013)90 points Connoisseurs Guide: "*Good Value* Long on autolyzed richness with a very keen sense of vigorous young fruit in the nose and following with long, impressively layered flavors of citrus, minerals and rich yeast, this exceptionally we ...Read More »
91 points Wine Spectator: "*Smart Buys* Focused and vibrant, with aromas of creamy apple, cinnamon and hazelnut leading to complex, layered flavors of lemon custard, mineral and almond. The finish lingers." (9/2013) Connoisseurs Guide: "Taking its usual place among the better basic Bruts of the year, Roederer's latest is yet again a sleek and spirited wine of great freshness and verve. It hews to the crispness and pert delicacy that we associate with fine Blanc de Blancs, but it musters a full measure of yeasty richness even while maintaining its lively step, and it is one of the few of its type that is ...Read More »
Wine Spectator: "Firm, dense and focused, with vivid blackberry, cranberry, spice and violet notes, ending with gripping, gravelly tannins. Drink now through 2021." (9/2014) K&L Notes: Winemaker's Notes: "The 2012 Pinot Noir exhibits the best of Anderson Valley. Aromas of black cherry, cranberry, blood orange, forest floor, and rose hips waft from the glass. Every swirl, sniff, and sip unveils something new! The palate has a silky and savory nature, leading to a long finish. Fresh acidity and round tannins lend this wine to being a perfect match with food. Enjoy with bacon stuffed po... Read More »
97 points Wine Enthusiast: "*Cellar Selection* All the benefits of maturity come through in this deliciously complex flagship sparkling wine of the French-owned estate. It shows very minute, slow-rising bubbles and a beautiful bouquet of ginger, cinnamon, cherry and fresh croissants. The flavors are layered, intricate, subtle but somehow rich. A lush and seemingly soft texture is supported by fresh acidity that encourages a long and delicate finish. Mature, but not old, it should be great through 2020 or longer." (12/2014)93 points Wine Spectator: "This shows a sense of grace and balance that belies its compl ...Read More »
Connoisseurs Guide: "* Good Value * Well-defined ripe-berry fruit is teamed with a nice mix of sweet oak and mildly briary spice in the nose here and carries forward as the dominant theme of the moderately deep, solidly varietal flavors that follow. The wine is just young enough to be a little rough at the edges, but service with food will help ease its way, as will a year or two of additional age." (5/2014) Wine Enthusiast: "Juicy and soft, this Zin is all about exuberant red fruit and restrained tannins. Full-bodied it also offers elegance with complex highlights of leather, cedar and peppery ...Read More »
From the winery: "Our much anticipated pink wine made from 100+ year old Grenache Gris vines. This year we made 50% like a white wine (whole cluster press to neutral French Oak barrels) and 50% was de-stemmed and left to soak on the skins for 24 hours in an open top wood vat before pressing and then on to neutral barrels. Spontaneous fermentation occurred in barrel followed by naturally occurring malolactic fermentation. We bottled unfined and unfiltered on February 23, 2015. Strawberry, tangerine and melon excite the senses for what follows. A moment t... Read More »
Winemaker Jason Drew began his winemaking career in 1980 when he helped plant his uncle's vineyard in Napa's Stag's Leap District. With degrees in Agricultural Ecology, Viticulture and Enology, and a track record working with top producers in Nothern Califorina, including Navarro, Joseph Phelps, Luna, and Corison, he eventually made his way to earning the position of Associate Winemaker at Babcock Vineyards in Santa Barbara, where he worked for four years before founding Drew Family Cellars in 2003. 91 points Wine Spectator: "Focused and vibrant, with aromas of creamy apple, cinnamon and hazelnut leading to complex, layered flavors of lemon custard, mineral and almond. The finish lingers." (9/2013)90 points Wine & Spirits: "Roederer Estate’s Brut is reliably open and delicious, this year’s cuvée bursting with concentrated apple flavor. It’s clean and dry with a long, delicate finish enhanced by the barrel-aged reserve wines that winemaker Arnaud Weyrich blends in. Its bold flavors and vinous texture would be great with cracked crab." (12/2014) Connoisseurs Guide: "*One Star* Taking its usual place among the better basic Bruts ...Read More »
Antonio Galloni: "The 2013 Pinot Noir Tous Ensemble is a gorgeous entry-level offering from Copain. Crushed flowers, sweet tobacco and red stone fruits are all laced together in a pretty, silky Pinot that over delivers for its very modest price tag. The Tous Ensemble is now made from 100% estate vineyards in Anderson Valley, which is quite remarkable at this level. Produced from grapes from a vineyard that I planted in 2003, which I sold to Zac Robinson of Husch Vineyards in 2007, I tasted this gem over the course of three days and it just kept getting better and better. It is an amazing wine! Deeply colored, the lovely perfumed nose offers crushed dried rose petal and ripe strawberry aromas, with undertones of slate-like minerals, creamy tones, and a mild meaty (almost gamy) character. All of this is supported by a lovely toasty oak quality. Much of this carries over to a broad, lush, viscous, complex mouthfeel th... Read More »
Wine Enthusiast: "Woodenhead does Pinot Noir well, too, but here it shows its skill with Zinfandel, producing a structured, peppery and leathery version bright in briary blackberry and plum. With fierce minerality at its core, this is a distinctive Zin for those who prefer their wines savory and earthy." (8/2013) K&L Notes: Mendocino County is possibly the most overlooked source for Zinfandel in California, with long-established vineyards which deliver substantial and structured expressions. The Venturi family has owned this vineyard site since 1924 which sits just west of the Redwood... Read More »
A blend of almost equal parts Grenache, Syrah and old vine Carignane from Redwood Valley in Mendocino. Aged in seasoned French oak for 15-months, to enhance the wine's texture but not mask its vibrant fruit with oak flavors, the 2012 Red Belly shines. From the winery: "Ruby red color. Complex aromatics of violet, red raspberry, plum, white pepper and forest floor. The palate is ample and textured, with the savory berry fruit, earth and spice in total concert. Best now with a decant, this vintage of Red Belly should age gracefully for the next decade."
A blend of several Anderson Valley vineyards, the large part of the grapes were grown on the warmer Booneville end of the valley which worked out nicely in this particularly cool 2010 vintage. Sites on the cooler "deep end" of the valley including Handley's own estate vineyards were allowed to hang later into the season and were helped along with a late warm spell. The wine was aged in 25% new French oak for 10 months before bottling, and is now in a great place after a couple additional years of bottle age. From the winery: "This vintage of Anderson Val... A blend of three different vineyards within Andreson Valley. Winemaker Jason Drew notes, "Bright red color. The nose has subtle aromas of freshly cut rose stems, cinnamon, vibrant red fruits, forest fungi, spice and mineral notes. This is a medium weight Pinot Noir with lifted red fruit, forest mushrooms, and red floral notes on the palate with subtle notes of cigar box and river stone minerality."
91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "More forward than the 2011, the 2012 Syrah Alturas has beautiful, gamey dark berry and raspberry-like fruits, olive, peppercorn and hints of road tar to go with a medium to full-bodied, supple and superbly textured feel on the palate. Possesses good concentration, a soft, easy going mid-palate and nicely integrated acidity, this is already drinking nicely, but will evolve gracefully over the coming 6-8 years. These northern California beauties are made by Paul Gordon and Scott Shapley, with a focus on their estate Halcon Vineyard located in the Mendocin ...Read More »
Cool climate Pinot Noir from a new brand that's sourced this wine from the Mendocino Ridge AVA in western Mendocino County, an innovative AVA that was established only for vineyards above 1,200 feet, or "above the clouds."
Bolinas-based Sean Thackrey has made a Petite Sirah from the Eaglepoint Ranch since 1997, and are we glad he has! This is a wine to put away in your cellar (or closet) for however long you can stand it! When you do get around to opening it, watch it explode from the glass and change over the hour or two it takes for you two drink the bottle, offering such an array of aromas and flavors it is impossible to catalog them here. Sean Thackrey is one of the most influential people in the Bay Area Food & Wine community, and has been for nearly three decades. Al... Read More »
92 points Wine Spectator: "Beautifully crafted and rich, this is focused on a core of black cherry and wild berry, with savory herb and dusty earth notes. For all the richness, there’s a pleasing sense of elegance and grace here, even if the tannins require some patience. Drink now through 2023"

Husch planted the first Pinot Noir vines in Anderson Valley in 1971, and the cool 2011 vintage was a throwback to this pioneering era when white grapes dominated the region. The modest pricing on Husch's Pinot Noir is also a throwback when other producers often want to court prestige more than new followers. This bottling realizes a bright and finessed Pinot Noir with modest alcohol and plenty of aromatic interest. The wine was fermented with 25% whole clusters (stems included) for an Old World sophistication before being aged for 9 months in 25% new Fre... Read More »

Of the 2011 Rhys "Home Vineyard" San Mateo County Pinot Noir,Antonio Galloni writes: "The 2011 Pinot Noir Home Vineyard bursts from glass with racy red berries, flowers, smoke, licorice, incense and orange peel. Exotic, beguiling and beautifully layered, the 2011 boasts stunning depth, yet weightless elegance and tons of pure personality. The racy, explosive finish is a marvel to behold. An utterly dazzling Pinot, the 2011 should drink well for years. It is one of the few California Pinots I would bet on to age gracefully for more than a decade. 90 points Antonio Galloni: "The 2013 Pinot Noir (Anderson Valley) is quite floral, lifted and delicate in style. Raspberry, crushed flowers and mint are some of the notes that grace this pretty, entry-level offering from Knez. Today, the 2013 comes across as a bit ethereal, with plenty of influence from the 50-60% whole clusters. The wine's mid-weight personality leads me to think it is best enjoyed sooner rather than later. The 2013 is approximately 2/3rds Cerise and 1/3rd Demuth fruit. (AG)" (1/2015)

From the winery "Lichen Estate’s innovative Les Pinots Noir & Gris 2013 offers an unorthodox blend of red and white grapes (60% Pinot Noir, 40% Pinot Gris). Aromas of grapefruit and white peach in the nose are matched by citrus gripping the mouth from lips to throat. Sweet Tarts brush dangerously close to Angostura bitters without touching, wrapped by a hint of effervescence. Les Pinots offers a density in the mid-palate balanced by a dancing rhubarb edge that tempts one’s tongue to swab the cheeks. Enjoy the long, savory, almost briny finish."

A unique blend that's not quite a red and not quite a rosé, created after some hungry deer and twists of nature had left a too-small-to-bottle-alone crop of Arneis and optimally-ripe-for-rosé crop of Dolcetto and Barbera at the Fox Hill Vineyard in Mendocino County. Co-fermented with carbonic maceration using indigenous yeasts in egg-shaped tanks and bottled unfined and unfiltered, this is a peppery, foresty, raspberry inflected wine with fresh acidity and just a touch of tannins. Really fun.
From the Winery; Our 5th year making bubbles, our Petillant Naturel (Pet Nat) is made from (mostly) organic Chardonnay grapes. We do not add sugar, yeast or anything else. We whole cluster press our hand harvested grapes to tank. Fermentation begins spontaneously and continues until near dry when we bottle under crown cap. Months later we disgorge by hand to remove most of the heavy yeast sediment and reduce the pressure. The result is a delightful, too easy to drink, very much alive, sparkling Chardonnay with a touch of sweetness. Drink early for a touc... Read More »
