1996 du Tertre, Margaux Top Pick!
1996 du Tertre, Margaux

88-90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A sleeper, Du Tertre's 1996 exhibits a black ruby/purple color, a sweet black fruit-scented nose, medium to full body, well-integrated tannin, and fine purity and depth. This wine should age nicely, yet have a degree of accessibility young. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2018." (2/1998) Jancis Robinson: "Owned by the Gasquetons until 1997. Looks quite evolved. Mid ruby with strong rusty notes at the rim. Very light nose. Lots of gentle evolution. Not in the first flush of youth but this has charm. Needs drinking before the fruit fades though." 1996 Corbin Michotte, St-Emilion Top Pick!
1996 Corbin Michotte, St-Emilion

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This wine follows in the style of most Corbin-Michottes, even though the vintage had a tendency to produce tannic, hard wines. However, Corbin-Michotte seems to always aim for ripeness, and a seductive, forward fruity style with no hard edges. The dark ruby-colored 1996 is round and soft, with plenty of herb-tinged berry fruit intermixed with smoke and earth. (RP)" (4/1999)

1996 Pontet-Canet Pauillac

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I was shocked by how backward the 1996 Pontet-Canet was on the three occasions I tasted it in January. This wine possesses superb potential, but it appears a decade's worth of patience will be necessary. The color is a saturated dark purple. With coaxing, the wine offers aromas of black currant jam intertwined with minerals, sweet oak, and spice. A full-bodied wine, it possesses layered, concentrated sweet fruit, with an elevated level of ripe tannin. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2035. 1996 Latour, Pauillac

100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Deep garnet-black in color, the 1996 is classic Latour at its utmost. The nose offers a tantalizing array of complex notes including dried Chinese plums, toasted nuts, Indian spices and black olive tapenade over a core of dried cherries and aged meat. The palate is pure power that is stunningly balanced giving a generous level of fruit concentration perfectly offset by a high level of very finely grained tannins and seamless freshness. Possessing a finish that just goes on and on, this is as good as it gets." (11/2012)96 points Wine Spectator: "Fabulous aromas of crushed raspberrie ...Read More »

1996 Mouton Rothschild, Pauillac

96 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright ruby with a palish rim. Intense, fragrant aromas of strawberry, iris, coffee, white pepper and bay leaf are lifted by an aromatic spice note; one can recognize the cabernet franc here. Rich, dense and suave, with very pure red fruit, cedar and herb flavors that coat the palate and are nicely carried by vibrant, harmonious acidity. Finishes with outstanding length, noble tannins and a late spicy, floral kick. This outstanding Mouton has improved enormously since its release. Very ripe, suave and spicy; at once subtle and gripping. Lovely Cabernet character dominating today. Very firm, long finish is youthful but not hard-edged. Showing extremely well." (8/2002)92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Dark ruby-colored, with a complex nose of dried herbs, Asian spices, and black cherry jam intermixed with cassis, it possesses outstanding purity, and considerable tannin in the finish. 1996 d'Angludet, Margaux

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A sleeper of the vintage, d'Angludet's 1996 reveals an opaque purple color, as well as a powerful, rich, black currant-scented nose with cedar, weedy tobacco, licorice, and earth in the background. Dense, backward, and atypically powerful and unevolved for a wine from this well-run chateau, this boldly made, tannic, yet impressively endowed wine will have a long lifeline. Anticipated maturity: 2001-2015." (4/1999) Wine Spectator: "Not a big wine, but a delicious drinkable style that shows good finesse. Aromas of berries and spices follow through to the palate. Layered texture over a strong backbone. Very long on the palate, with thoroughly ripe, noble cabernet tannins. Superb." (6/1999)93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Made from 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot, this is a huge, backward wine. This medium to full-bodied, elegant, savory, broad wine is still five years away from full maturity. It should continue to drink well for another 10-15 years." 1996 Pichon-Baron, Pauillac
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1996 Pichon-Baron, Pauillac (91RP, 90ST, 90WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Pichon Longueville Baron's 1996 has turned out to be even better than I thought from cask. The high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend (about 80%) resulted in a wine that has put on weight in the bottle. An opaque purple color is accompanied by beautiful aromas of tobacco, new saddle leather, roasted coffee, and cassis. It is dense, medium to full-bodied, and backward, with moderately high tannin, but plenty of sweet fruit, glycerin, and extract to balance out the wine's structure. This well-endowed, classic Pauillac should be at its finest between 2006-2022." (04/1999)

1996 d'Yquem, Sauternes (Pre-Arrival)

96 points Wine Spectator: "This leans toward the tropical side, with mango and guava notes out front, while maple, date, blood orange and citrus oil flavors fill in behind. The finish kicks into another gear, taking off with honeysuckle, orange blossom and frangipane accents. Has almost unbridled power today, while maintaining serious cut. A very impressive showing in a rather overlooked vintage.—Non-blind Yquem vertical (July 2014). Drink now through 2035." The 1995 was much better for Merlot and Cabernet Franc. So this 1996 Eglise Clinet came as a big surprise when I tasted it. The red shows wonderful complexity and beauty now. It's full body yet refined with black olive and berry character. It's so balanced and fine now. Very pretty. Drink now." (LPB)" (3/2010)90 points Wine Spectator: "Gorgeous aromas of currant and flowers follow through to a full-bodied palate, with silky tannins and a medium finish. Robert Parker says: "Raymond-Lafon is a name to watch in the Sauternes district, particularly if one is looking for a wine that is close to the brilliance and majestic richness of Yquem for less than one-third the price. This small estate abuts Yquem's vineyard and has an excellent reputation. …Unfortunately, the wine is extremely difficult to find because of the tiny production (1,300 cases) and the fact that the proprietor Pierre Meslier sells much of it to private clients in Europe." It reveals an essence of creme de cassis character which sets it apart from other Pauillacs. The wine is displaying plenty of tannin, huge body, and sweet black currant fruit intermixed with minerals and subtle oak. Highly complex aromas of blackberry, violet pastille, eucalyptus, leather and game. Wonderfully sweet but with terrific grip, even a touch of youthful austerity. Very classy, subtle wine with terrific inner-mouth energy. Builds very slowly on the back half, finishing with noble, fine-grained tannins and terrific grip. This makes the 1995 seem almost cooked by comparison. Still needs at least five or six years of cellaring. Bid on this bottle of 1996 Margaux, Margaux (99RP, 96ST, 95WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Chateau Margaux, which was bottled in September 1998, is undoubtedly one of the great classics produced under the Mentzelopoulos regime. In many respects it is the quintessential Chateau Margaux, as well as the paradigm for this estate, combining measured power, extraordinary elegance, and admirable complexity. I tasted the wine of three separate occasions in January, and in short, it's a beauty! The color is opaque purple. 1996 Lafleur, Pomerol

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "As I suspected, the 1996 Lafleur is a painfully backward, austere wine that represents a modern day clone of this estate's 1966. It possesses a backward, tannic, Medoc-like character, with none of Pomerol's hallmark generosity. The wine exhibits a saturated dark purple color, as well as a distinctive mineral, black raspberry, and berry-scented nose with the steely, mineral Lafleur character well-displayed. This wine's hallmark remains a sur-maturite (over-ripeness) of the Cabernet Sauvignon grape. Yet the wine has retained its intrinsic classicism, symmetry, and profound potential for complexity and elegance. Medium-bodie ...Read More »

1996 Domaine de Chevalier Rouge, Pessac-Léognan

Jancis Robinson: "Subtle maturation on the nose. Very lively and dancing with good core of fruit. Good for now but supported by exceptionally fine tannins. Delicate, dancing. 18/20 points." (9/2006) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 has turned out beautifully from the bottle. It is an exceptionally elegant wine, with well-integrated oak, and tobacco-tinged, cherry and cassis fruit. It appears to be a return to the style of the seventies and early eighties. Lush, with excellent concentration, a beautiful texture, and a flattering, potentially complex aromatic profile, this medium-bodied wine should ...Read More »

1996 Clinet, Pomerol (1.5L)

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is a backward, muscular, highly-extracted wine with a boatload of tannin, thus the question mark. The saturated plum/purple color is followed by an aggressively oaky nose with scents of roasted coffee, blackberries, and prunes. It is somewhat of a freak for a 1996 Pomerol given its richness, intensity, and overripe style. Medium-bodied and powerful, but extremely closed, and in need of 5-7 years of cellaring, it will be interesting to follow this wine's evolution to determine if the tannin fully integrates itself into the wine's concentrated style. ...Read More »

1996 Ducru-Beaucaillou, St-Julien (3L)

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I tasted the 1996 Ducru Beaucaillou on four separate occasions from bottle in January. The 1996 is long, with a deep mid-palate. It also reveals tannin in the finish. This wine is remarkable. It is muscular, concentrated, and classic. Bottled in late June, 1998, it exhibits a saturated ruby/purple color, as well as a knock-out nose of minerals, licorice, cassis, and an unmistakable lead pencil smell that I often associate with top vintages of Lafite-Rothschild. It is sweet and full-bodied, yet unbelievably rich with no sense of heaviness or flabbiness. T ...Read More »
