French Wine

When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its regions, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and occasionally as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a 100 lives. To understand and appreciate French wine, you only need to begin tasting them. Check out some of the top picks that our buyers have tracked down - several of these wines are imported directly from France.

Allen Meadows - Burghound: " **Outstanding** Very ripe red cherry, strawberry and pinot fruit aromas explode from the glass and introduce exceptionally fresh and exuberant, sappy and pure medium weight flavors underpinned by dusty, textured tannins and plenty of finishing velvet and silk. There is an utterly seductive inner mouth perfume and the length is most impressive. As good a young Lafarge Grèves as I can recall at this stage." (04/2004)

2002 Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru "Clos des Ducs"
Bid on this bottle of 2002 Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru "Clos des Ducs" (93BH, 92RP, 92ST). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Even after 10 years this remains almost as primary as when it was bottled as there are no secondary hints in evidence on the elegant and pure red berry fruit and stone-infused nose. The detailed, intense and strongly mineral-driven medium-bodied flavors possess a sophisticated mouth feel while coating the palate with dry extract. There is a noticeably firm acid spine on the moderately austere and gorgeously persistent finish. This is a distinctly understated vintage for Clos des Ducs that seems to be evolving at a glacially slow pace...As d'Angerville suggests, these '02s are brilliantly balanced and while they may not last quite as long as the more structured '99s, they are genuinely stunning wines. 2009 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
Bid on this bottle of 2009 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru. According to the importer, Michael Skurnik Wines: "Pierre Yves Colin was the winemaker for his father's Domaine Marc Colin until 2005. He began his own domaine, first as a micro-négociant operation, focusing on tiny quantities of the finest wines that he can buy. Now he has grown his domaine with the help of family holdings to 70% plots that he owns and 30% grapes he purchases. His holdings are mostly in Chassagne-Montrachet (where the domaine is located) but he also produces multiple bottlings of Meursault, St. Aubin, and Puligny-Montrachet. Pierre-Yves has rapidly become a star in Cote de Beaune and is now considered one of the pre-eminent young producers of White Burgundy. His choice to use larger demi-muid barrels and eschew the use of battonnage, makes each one of his bottlings a clear expression of its terroir and a study in mineral-driven Chardonnay. 1999 Domaine des Remizieres Hermitage "Cuvee Emilie"
Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 1999 Domaine des Remizieres Hermitage "Cuvee Emilie" (96RP, 92ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Philippe Desmeures's 1999 Hermitage Cuvee Emilie rouge (1,000 cases) is a candidate for the "Hermitage of the vintage." About 70% of the grapes for this cuvee emerge from old vines located in L'Hermite (on the crown of the great dome of Hermitage) and the remainder from Les Rocoules. This extraordinarily intense offering boasts an opaque black/purple color (reminiscent of a cult Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa) as well as a sumptuous nose of sweet blackberry liqueur intermixed with espresso, licorice, tobacco, minerals, and toast. There is massive flavor concentration, multiple layers, full body, purity, and beautifully integrated acidity and tannin. This compelling Hermitage should evolve for three decades. (RP)" (04/2002)

1999 Domaine Michel & Stéphane Ogier Côte-Rôtie
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1999 Domaine Michel & Stéphane Ogier Côte-Rôtie (95RP, 94WS, 93ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The finest Cote Roties Ogier has made (and he agrees) are the 1999s. The fabulous, opaque purple-colored 1999 Cote Rotie, which spent two years in wood (30% new), reveals a glorious bouquet of bacon fat, creme de cassis, licorice, violets, and spice box. It is full-bodied, with sweet tannin, great presence in the mouth, and a knock-out finish. Although it will be approachable in its youth, 3-4 more years of cellaring will be beneficial. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2018. Michel Ogier and his son, Stephane, are producing spectacular wines. The only problem is that production is small. As I indicated last year, Ogier's 1999s are magical. (RP)" (04/2002)

The fruit and tannins are so sweet. Tempting now. Best from 2005 through 2030." (12/2000)

A superb Beaune wine with excellent flavor intensity and length. The tannins are quite fine. " (03/2010)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2010 Domaine de Montille Volnay 1er Cru "Champans" ((91-93BH), (91-93RP), (90-93ST)). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2010 Volnay Champans presents a deeper, richer and more powerful expression of fruit than the Mitans. It was also made with 100% destemmed fruit. Here the aromas and flavors are on the darker side of red, but it is more the wine’s muscle and textural plushness that distinguishes it. Sweet spices, red berries and licorice wrap around the plush finish. This is another great effort." (02/2012)

Bid on this bottle of 1990 Château de Beaucastel "Hommage à Jacques Perrin" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (100RP, 98AG). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The perfection of the 1990 is based on a seamless, classic, harmonious concoction of flowers, melted licorice, blackberries, kirsch, blueberries, and Asian spices. An enormously full-bodied, sweet, expansive, amazing wine with a finish that lasts over a minute, it combines the extraordinary hedonism of the 1998 with an unbelievable intellectual appeal that makes it so hauntingly great. Even though it remains youthful, it can be drunk now or cellared for another 30 years." (01/2003)

Bid on this bottle of 2011 DRC Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche Grand Cru (96BH, 96ST, 95RP). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "96+ Bright, medium red-ruby. Subdued but very pure and nuanced aromas of tangy red fruits, flowers, Oriental spices, licorice and crushed stone, plus an exhilarating hint of peach. Wonderfully suave on entry, then rich, ripe, dry and sharply delineated, showing outstanding refinement and aristocratic reserve to its spicy red and blue fruit flavors. The rising finish goes on and on, with noble tannins thoroughly buffered by fruit. The high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend (about 80%) resulted in a wine that has put on weight in the bottle. An opaque purple color is accompanied by beautiful aromas of tobacco, new saddle leather, roasted coffee, and cassis. It is dense, medium to full-bodied, and backward, with moderately high tannin, but plenty of sweet fruit, glycerin, and extract to balance out the wine's structure. This well-endowed, classic Pauillac should be at its finest between 2006-2022." (04/1999)

The wine is brilliantly made, full-bodied, and tightly-structured with plenty of muscle and outstanding concentration and purity. Pushing perfection, this blend of 57% Cabernet Franc (the highest ever at Angelus) and 43% Merlot boasts a dense purple color as well as a sublime set of aromatics, including forest floor, blue, red and black fruits, charcoal and hints of licorice and wood spice. Long, opulent, voluptuously textured and incredibly youthful and fresh, this full-bodied, tour de force in winemaking is an absolute legend in the making. It is an incredible accomplishment for a Right Bank 2003. Kudos to Hubert de Bouard for his vision as well as his perfectionist personality. This beauty should age for 5-10 more years. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2004 Cos d'Estournel, St-Estèphe (95JS, 94WS, 92RP, 91ST). James Suckling: "*Daily Collectibles* This is another example of the wonderful 2004 vintage for Bordeaux. They are so delicious to drink now. The Cos is one of the best out there. And very reasonably priced at less than $150 a bottle. The charcuterie that hits you as soon as you open this Bordeaux is overwhelming: It's smoky, spicy and sexy. Minutes later you realize the complexity on offer, catching just a scent of the dark fruits hidden beneath, and before those, long and wonderful hints of balsamic vinegar. On the palate this shows elegance and finesse thanks to fabulous balance, extremely integrated tannins and a long and glorious finish. This is so satisfying and wonderful now, but the slightly bitter aftertaste on the rear palate suggests this could do with at least another 10 years before opening. " (08/2014)

Of the 2005 Domaine Louis Jadot Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeot Clos de la Chapelle Duc de Magenta ,Wine Spectator writes: "This has a little more of a hard edge to it, in the form of oak tannins. 1986 Joseph Drouhin Beaune Rouge 1er Cru "Clos des Mouches"
Bid on this bottle of 1986 Joseph Drouhin Beaune Rouge 1er Cru "Clos des Mouches". Allen Meadows - Burghound: "The nose is extremely exotic with obvious botrytis notes as well as mango and pineapple that seems perfectly in keeping with the notably rich, full and almost viscous texture of the mouth coating flavors. There is good complexity here though I find the finish to lack vibrancy as there is barely enough acidity to avoid heaviness. For my taste, I would strongly suggest consuming this over the next year or two as it will inevitably start to decline." (10/2006)

(01/91) And, from Clive Coates: "Medium-full colour. The fruit is ripe and stylish on the nose. Round, ripe, Fullish, oaky. This has depth and ripeness and no lack of concentration. This is quintessential Champans and a first rate example of the vineyard. Note however that it remains very young and will still need the better part of a decade to reach full maturity." (04/2010)

Viscous, deep, and chewy, this muscular wine boasts immense concentration and length. Its thickly textured personality reveals blackberry jam, candied dark cherries, and a myriad spices. Its prolonged finish exhibits exquisitely ripe tannin. Though I’ve been in love with the 1990 for years, this 60 Ouvrees may well surpass it! Anticipated maturity: 2008-2019." (06/04)

Of the 1988 Philipe Leclerc Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Combe Aux Moines",Robert Parker's Wine Advocate writes: "The 1988 Gevrey-Chambertin Combe aux Moines is a compelling wine, although I did not think it had quite the extra measure of depth of Les Cazetiers. Perhaps it is simply more backward and the depth will emerge in time. It is truly a great expression of Gevrey-Chambertin, with its wild, savage, animal-like bouquet that exhibits exotic spices, sweet, toasty oak, and powerful, black cherry aromas. Sweet black currant, smoked meats, spring flowers, licorice, and tar all jump from the glass of this dark plum/purple-colored wine. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Unfortunately there is only one new release from Dom Perignon on the market, but what a wine it is! The 2002 Brut Rose explodes from the glass with endless layers of huge, voluptuous fruit, A big, full-bodied wine, the 2002 is probably the most overly vinous, intense Rose ever made by long-time Chef de Caves Richard Geoffroy. Layers of cool, insistent minerality balance the fruit beautifully on the crystalline, vivid finish. The 2002 will be nearly impossible to resist young, but take my word for it; the wine is extremely closed right now. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2032." (11/2012)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2007 Pierre Usseglio "Cuvée de Mon Aïeul" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (100RP, 94ST, 94WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "There are 1,800 cases of the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee du Mon Aieul (100% tank-aged Grenache). It represents an awesome naked/virginal expression of Grenache from three vineyard parcels planted in sand, clay, and limestone soils. After tasting this wine on five separate occasions, I can state with certainty, it has the most saturated color of any Mon Aieul produced to date. Moreover, its perfume of blueberry liqueur, black raspberries, licorice, roasted meat juices, and lavender is incredible. Full-bodied power, a multilayered mouthfeel, tremendous purity, and awesome concentration put this wine in a class by itself. This sensational Chateauneuf du Pape is still very young, and 3-4 years of cellaring is required. It should be a modern day legend and last for nearly two decades. (RP)" (10/2009)

The nose is earthy but fresh with excellent density and volume, culminating in an explosively powerful finish. 2003 Carruades de Lafite, Pauillac

Despite record heat in June, July and August, this wine only hit 12.8% alcohol, which seems modest compared to the higher alcohol levels of 2009 and 2010. A final blend of 50% Merlot, 48% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc has resulted in a second wine with a Lafite Rothschild-like character, plenty of creme de cassis, cedarwood and graphite notes as well as a supple, lush texture. Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2006 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape (98RP, 95ST, 95WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape is one of the two or three candidates for the wine of the vintage. An extraordinarily great wine, the 2006 is far superior to the 2005, which was amazing, and while made in a different style, is as great as the 2003, and such legends as 1990 and 1978. Fashioned from a minuscule 21 hectoliters per hectare, and tipping the scales at 15.2% natural alcohol, the 2006 boasts a dense ruby/purple color to the rim, in addition to an extraordinary bouquet of melted licorice, spring flowers, raspberries, black currants, spice box, and earth. In the mouth, it is utterly profound – full-bodied and multidimensional with astonishing purity, length, equilibrium, and intensity. This is a superb vintage for the Avrils, and Vincent deserves huge accolades for producing a wine of such incredible intensity and complexity. Think of Clos des Papes as a Chateaune

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: " Showing a smidge of worrisome volatile acidity, the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Chaupin nevertheless has off-the-hook levels of richness and depth. Spring flowers, blackberry, cassis, licorice, violets and white pepper are all present here, and it’s a massive wine on the palate, with big fruit, a voluptuous texture and a great finish. After this tasting, I pulled a bottle from my cellar (purchased on release), and it was firing on all cylinders, with not a hint of VA, so this appears to be an isolated issue. (JD)" (08/2014)

This stunning bottle's design comes from optical artist Victor Vaserely, as the wine's name indicates. Making this cuvée all the more rare, the 1978 harvest was one of the smallest in the history of Champagne since the pre-war period (78 million bottles). 1996 Lagrange, St-Julien
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1996 Lagrange, St-Julien (93ST, 91WS, 90RP). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright medium ruby. Highly complex aromas of blackberry, violet pastille, eucalyptus, leather and game. Wonderfully sweet but with terrific grip, even a touch of youthful austerity. Very classy, subtle wine with terrific inner-mouth energy. Builds very slowly on the back half, finishing with noble, fine-grained tannins and terrific grip. This makes the 1995 seem almost cooked by comparison. Still needs at least five or six years of cellaring. 'We always had unusual tastes in this wine, like eucalyptus and menthol, due to the cool September nights,' noted Ducasse. 93(+?) points." (09/2004)

2002 Palmer, Margaux
Bid on this bottle of 2002 Palmer, Margaux (94RP, 91WS, 90ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A successful wine for the vintage, this blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 8% Petit Verdot boasts complex notes of menthol, black currants, plums, licorice, and a hint of cappuccino in its stunning aromatics. Dense, medium to full-bodied, with high levels of tannin in a big, full-bodied style (much in the spirit of such classic Bordeaux vintages as 1966, 1986, and 1996), this wine possesses superb purity and serious length, but should be purchased only by those with considerable patience and a good, cold cellar, since it will need plenty of time. An opaque ruby/purple color is followed by a tight but blossoming bouquet of blackberries, hickory smoke, damp earth, underbrush, and licorice. The wine is full-bodied, chewy, thick, but civilized. Jammy aromas of surmaturite: raspberry liqueur, cherry cough syrup, roasted game, roast coffee and mocha. Large-scaled and impressive on the attack, then rich, very concentrated and mouthfilling in the middle. Big, thick and layered; a bit unrefined next to the '99 normale, but at the same time more traditional and less exaggerated-more crunchy-than the extravagant '98 Vieilles Vignes. The color is still a dense ruby/purple with just a hint of lightening at the rim. With several hours of aeration, the aromatics become striking, with notes of smoke, toast, creme de cassis, mineral, and white flowers. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2007 Pierre Usseglio "Reserve des Deux Freres" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (100RP, 95ST, 92WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The perfect 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve des Deux Freres is slightly more evolved and complex than the Mon Aieul, as odd as that seems. Having had it twice out of bottle, this wine (nearly 100% Grenache combined with a few dollops of Syrah) possesses an opaque ruby/purple color as well as a thrilling texture and monumental length (the finish lasts over 60 seconds). it's a blockbuster, but everything is in perfect balance, and, remarkably, it comes across as the most accessible Reserve des Deux Freres made to date. This wine's aging is completely different from its sibling-s. Sixty percent is aged in 1, 2, and 3-year-old Burgundy barrels, and the rest in small new oak barrels, but there is not a hint of new oak in the aromatics. Bid on this bottle of 2004 Ausone, St-Emilion (98W&S, 95WS, 94RP, 93ST). Wine & Spirits: "Tasted from barrel in 2005, this was among the best wines of the vintage, with limestone-soil character coming through the fresh brightness of fruit. Ausone was all potential energy then, and it has only improved in the two years since. The wine shares the resonant depths of the ancient limestone caves at Ausone, as the flavors echo through the finish. It starts off from a small place, a sweet confection that brings roasted blueberries to mind, the caramelized oak tasting like the edge of charred fat on extremely fine grilled beef. Over the course of several days, the wine becomes increasingly more subtle and serious in tone, with delicate red fruit, gracious mineral-inflected tannins and detailed flavors that last effortlessly. 2007 Sylvain Cathiard Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru "Aux Murgers"
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2007 Sylvain Cathiard Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru "Aux Murgers" (93RP, (89-92ST)). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I recall this 2007 Nuits Saint Georges aux Murger being delicious from barrel. With a half a dozen years or so in bottle, it is dutifully blossoming into one beautiful Pinot Noir. Youthful in color, the nose attests to the relatively high proportion of new oak, although it is sutured into the fruit profile of mulberry, yellow plum and crushed strawberries all well-defined. The palate has the weight of a more precocious vintage, although part of that emanates from the oak. You could describe it as a modern style of Burgundy, but one adroitly pulled off, with a silky and harmonious finish with not a hard edge in sight. This superb wine is drinking beautifully now, but it should keep for another ten years. Drink now-2024. Tasted January 2014." (04/2014)

Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Wonderfully elegant fruit with extremely fine, minerally flavors yet they are quite dense and concentrated. The sève here is simply incredible. 1986 d'Yquem, Sauternes
Bid on this bottle of 1986 d'Yquem, Sauternes (98RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "There is no other wine in the world like it, and there is no other luxury wine that can possibly justify its price as much as Yquem. The remarkable amount of painstaking labor necessary to produce the nectar known as Yquem is almost impossible to comprehend. This is a fascinating effort. With greater evidence of botrytis than the colossal 1983, but less power and alcohol, the 1986 Yquem tastes reminiscent of the 1975, only more precocious, as well as more concentrated. Several highly respected Bordeaux negociants who are Yquem enthusiasts claim the 1986 Yquem is the greatest wine produced at the property since the legendary 1937. Its enthralling bouquet of pineapples, sauteed hazelnuts, vanillin, and ripe apricots is breathtaking. Compellingly concentrated, the breadth as well as depth of flavor seemingly know no limits. This full-bodied, powerful, yet impeccably balanced Yquem should provide memorabl

Bid on this bottle of 1990 Moët & Chandon "Cuvée Dom Pérignon" Brut Champagne (98RP, 93ST, 92WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Medium lemon-straw colour. Intensely fragrant nose with aromas of jasmine, cinnamon buttered toast, stewed apples and preserved ginger. Concentrated honey-nut, warm apple tart and spice flavours fill the mouth giving ample flesh to the firm, fine structure. The bubbles are still remarkably frisky and, in harmony with the crisp backbone of acid, make for a relatively youthful, elegant and exquisitely balanced wine. Very long finish. (LPB)" (03/2009)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A gorgeous example of Lascombes, the 2005, a blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot, continues the remarkable turn-around in quality that began five years ago. A stunningly opulent wine with a dense purple color, the 2005 possesses a beautiful perfume of spring flowers, blueberries, blackberries, creosote, and graphite, full body, silky but noticeable tannins, a layered mouthfeel, and a stunning, 45+-second finish. 1966 Montrose, St-Estèphe
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1966 Montrose, St-Estèphe. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1966 is still dark ruby with a peppery, very spice, yet tight, relatively closed bouquet. The wine is austere and tough on the palate, with good fruit and firm, rough tannins. Comparatively, it is not as massive or as rich as the 1970, 1964, or 1961, but is still backward and austere. 1989 Margaux, Margaux
Bid on this bottle of 1989 Margaux, Margaux (97WS, 90RP). Wine Spectator: "This is about as alluring as it gets aromatically, with singed alder, juniper, bay and charcoal notes out front, hinting at power but turning beguiling as they flow into the core of steeped red currant, dried currant and black tea. The charcoal note makes an encore, with a lovely twinge of old-school character holding the finish. Bid on this bottle of 2008 Domaine Comte de Vogüé Bonnes Mares Grand Cru ((92-94BH), (93-94RP), 92ST). 92-94 Burghound: "A more deeply pitched nose of cool and reserved red and black cherry aromas that are quite fresh and pure and are laced more with warm earth than stone though both are present. The focused and detailed broad-shouldered flavors are blessed with ample dry extract that cuts a bit of the austerity on the linear, serious, mouth coating and hugely long finish. Bid on this bottle of 1982 Gruaud-Larose, St-Julien (stained labels) (98RP, 96ST, 94WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A massive wine that is clearly of first-growth quality in this vintage, the 1982 Gruaud Larose remains a youngster. A broodingly dense, thick, unctuously textured, inky/plum/garnet/purple color offers up scents of beef blood, steak tartare, cassis, herbs, tobacco, and underbrush. One of the most concentrated wines of the vintage (as well as one of the most concentrated Bordeaux’s I have ever tasted), it is a huge, full-bodied, weighty, rich wine whose tannins are getting silkier and silkier. It appears set for another 30-40 years of life. This behemoth is a singularly profound example of Gruaud Larose that continues to justify its legendary status. (RP)" (06/2009)

The tannins are resolved and the wine savory, fleshy, and oh, so pure and hedonistic. Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1998 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe "La Crau" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (95RP, 94WE, 94WS, 91ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Between 1978 and 2007, this 1998 is the greatest Vieux Telegraphe that was produced. It has taken a good decade for this wine to shed its tannins and come out of a dormant, closed period. It has finally emerged, and notes of iodine, seaweed, black currants, incense, and sweet cherries as well as hot rocks jump from the glass of this full-bodied, powerful wine. It possesses considerable elegance and purity, along with loads of raspberries and incense, in a round, juicy, rich style that is just emerging from the closet. 1996 Krug Brut Champagne
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1996 Krug Brut Champagne (100W&S, 99ST, 99WS, 98AG, 98RP). Wine & Spirits: "It's hard to imagine how a wine of this power can sustain perfect balance. What is now a more nonchalant intensity in the aroma was, in fact, too much to handle when we tasted this last year, as if the wine had no time for mere humans with their limited sense receptors. If you stop to taste ripe pear, ginger spice, apple blossom and butterscotch the wine leaves you lost in random flavor descriptors as it soars off into a vinous glow that lasts for minutes. This may well be the greatest vintage wine of Henri Krug's career (unless it is challenged by the 2002). It is impossible to predict how long this wine will thrive in bottle, though considering the current fine condition of the 1959 Krug, the first 50 years are a given." (12/2008)

2000 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac
Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 2000 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac (96RP, 96WE, 95WS, 94ST, 93JS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "In short, I find this to be a spectacular Pichon Lalande. Dense purple in color, with loads of coffee, mocha, creme de cassis, and chocolate notes, this is a somewhat unusual blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, and a whooping 10% Petit Verdot, with a little bit of Cabernet Franc. The Petit Verdot certainly gives the wine more of a tapenade, floral note, which I think can be interpreted by some as herbal. This is a rich, opulent, stunning Pichon Lalande that is beginning to drink beautifully, yet should continue to improve for at least another 10-15 years and last 30 or more years." (06/2010)

A deep blue/purple hue is accompanied by classic aromas of smoky blueberries and blackberries as well as incense and floral notes in the background. A beautiful texture, opulence, flamboyance, and purity characterize this stunningly deep, full-bodied effort, another great success from proprietor Hubert de Bouard. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2022." 2003 Bellevue-Mondotte, St-Emilion
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2003 Bellevue-Mondotte, St-Emilion (94RP, 92WS, 90ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Even in a vintage such as 2003 there are wines that are youthful, unevolved and still in need of bottle age. The 2003 Bellevue Mondotte is one of those wines. From a tiny (5 acres) estate owned by Gerard Perse, this blend of 90% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits youthful aromas of blue and black fruits, chalk dust, lead pencil shavings and Christmas fruitcake. Full, ripe and moderately tannic, it requires another 3-5 years of bottle age and could turn out to be one of the longest-lived wines of the vintage, lasting another 25-30 years. (RP)" (08/2014)

Bid on this 7-bottle lot of 2004 Domaine William Fevre Chablis Grand Cru "Les Preuses" (OWC - 95BH, 94RP, 93ST) in original wood. Allen Meadows - Burghound: "This brilliant effort is evolving very much along the lines that I originally expected that it might and it has arrived on the front edge of full maturity. The elegant and highly complex nose is wonderfully classy and it clearly speaks of its origins as do the rich yet delineated medium-bodied flavors brimming with a subtle minerality and outstanding length. About the only nit is that the finish of this most recent bottle is perhaps not quite as persistent as I remember but overall, this is flat out terrific. I would continue to hold this for another year or two but it would be no vinous crime to dip into this now. Consistent notes." (05/2011)

Possessing the classic kirsch liqueur, incense, flowers and licorice aromas and flavors that always show here, it flows onto the palate with a jaw dropping good texture that carries massive amounts of fruit, beautiful mid-palate concentration and a layered, silky feel. Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 2001 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape (95RP, 94WS, 93ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Paul Avril feels that purchasers of the 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape should 'wait ten years' before drinking it. A blend of 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah, and 5% Counoise, all aged in large wood foudres prior to being bottled without filtration, was produced from low yields of 27 hectoliters per hectare. A deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by a sweet bouquet of figs, raspberries, new saddle leather, autumnal forest floor, and resiny notes. Full-bodied with beautiful purity as well as a strikingly rich mouthfeel, this seriously endowed Chateauneuf admirably conceals its 14.5% alcohol. A structured finish and impressive extract levels suggest considerable longevity. This firmly tannic, intensely concentrated 2001 boasts great aromatic and palate presence, but it remains young and unevolved. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2020+." (02/2004)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1996 Smith-Haut-Lafitte, Pessac-Leognan (90RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Smith-Haut-Lafitte is the quintessentially elegant Bordeaux. With a dark ruby/purple color, it displays a beautiful presentation of blackberry and cassis fruit nicely dosed with subtle new oak. On the attack, the wine is sweet and pure, with striking symmetry, and a compellingly balanced mid-palate and finish. Although not as big as some blockbusters from this vintage, it is extremely complex (both aromatically and flavor-wise), and impressive for its restraint, subtlety, and impeccable balance. 2005 Brane-Cantenac, Margaux
Bid on this bottle of 2005 Brane-Cantenac, Margaux (94RP, 94WE, 92WS, 91ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is the finest Brane-Cantenac I have tasted in over thirty years. Unusually perfumed and already approachable (atypical for most 2005 Medocs), it reveals a deep plum/purple color as well as a stunningly flamboyant bouquet of smoked herbs, licorice, camphor, black cherries, currants, and notions of plums and blackberries. Elegant with silky tannin and medium body, it is clearly a classic statement on the Margaux appellation. While not a powerhouse, it is beautifully concentrated, stunningly balanced, and surprisingly forward. It could be drunk now after several hours of decanting, but it should age easily for 20+ years." Yields of 38 hectoliters per hectare, while higher than in 2010, were still modest. Another powerful, big, large-scaled effort, the 2008 exhibits an inky/purple color as well as sweet creme de cassis, blackberry, plum, Asian spice, licorice and incense notes. Layered and full-bodied with stunning purity and a 40+ second finish, this beauty needs 3-5 years of bottle age and should keep for 25-30 years. (94+)" (05/2011)

Composed of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon and 27% Merlot that came in at 13.09% alcohol, it is a surprisingly intense effort displaying a marvelous texture, plenty of black currant, licorice, unsmoked cigar tobacco and earthy characteristics, a full-bodied mouthfeel and stunning purity as well as density. Full-bodied, decadent and layered, with incredible purity and freshness, it boasts heavenly notes of blackberry, chocolate, licorice, red wine marinade and roasted meat. It’s a monumental wine that offers a singular, yet hedonistic drinking experience that should not be missed. (JD)" (08/2014)

1996 Margaux, Margaux
Bid on this bottle of 1996 Margaux, Margaux (99RP, 96ST, 95WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Chateau Margaux, which was bottled in September 1998, is undoubtedly one of the great classics produced under the Mentzelopoulos regime. In many respects it is the quintessential Chateau Margaux, as well as the paradigm for this estate, combining measured power, extraordinary elegance, and admirable complexity. I tasted the wine of three separate occasions in January, and in short, it's a beauty! The color is opaque purple. The wine offers extraordinarily pure notes of blackberries, cassis, pain grille, and flowers, gorgeous sweetness, a seamless personality, and full body, with nothing out of place." (04/1999)

1989 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1989 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac (99RP, 96WS, 95ST, 94JS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1989 has taken forever to shed its formidable tannins, but what a great vintage of Lynch Bages! I would rank it at the top of the pyramid... Its dense purple color reveals a slight lightening at the edge and the stunning bouquet offers classic notes of creme de cassis, subtle smoke, oak and graphite. Powerful and rich with some tannins still to shed at age 22, it is still a young adolescent in terms of its evolutionand will benefit from another 4-5 years of cellaring. It should prove to be a 50 year wine. (RP)" (08/2011)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2003 Domaine du Pégaü "Cuvée Reservée" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (98RP, 97WS, 94ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: " Starting with the 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reserve, this wine showed spectacularly on release, closed down for a few years, and has now emerged, at close to full maturity, and is straight-up fabulous. Out of the entire tasting, it remained my favorite. Giving up gorgeous blackberry, currants, garrigue, pepper and beef blood, it hits the palate with a massive, full-bodied texture that carries layers of sweet fruit, awesome concentration and blockbuster length. Tasting like the essence of both this estate and the terroir, it’s an incredible wine that I’m happy to taste/drink anytime. It will continue to evolve gracefully, but I see no reason to delay gratification. (JD)" (08/2014)

Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2005 Domaine Paul Autard "Cuvée La Côte Ronde" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (94RP, 93ST, 93WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee La Cote Ronde is undeniably the best wine Autard has made since the 1998 rendition of this cuvee. This got a big “Wow!” when I smelled it. A stunning nose of black truffles, melted licorice, blackberries, and sweet cherries is followed by a multi-dimensional, multi-layered, full-bodied wine with tremendous power, richness, and a hint of barrique. One could say this is modern, but the Provencal personality jumps from the glass of this meaty, dense wine. (RP)" (10/2007)

Bid on this 2-half-bottle lot of 1990 d'Yquem, Sauternes (375ml) (99RP, 95WS, 94ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "An extraordinary effort, Yquem's 1990 is a rich and fabulously superb, sweet wine. This wine also possesses lots of elegance and finesse. The wine's medium gold color is accompanied by an exceptionally sweet nose of honeyed tropical fruits, peaches, coconut, and apricots. High quality, subtle toasty oak is well-integrated. The wine is massive on the palate, with layers of intensely ripe botrytis-tinged, exceptionally sweet fruit. Surprisingly well-integrated acidity, and a seamless, full-bodied power and richness have created a wine of remarkable harmony and purity. Certainly it is one of the richest Yquems I have ever tasted, with 50-100 years of potential longevity. An awesome Yquem! Anticipated maturity: 2003-2050+." (04/1999)

1966 DRC Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg Grand Cru
Bid on this bottle of 1966 DRC Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg Grand Cru (94AG, 94BH). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Completely bricked though but not browning. Fantastically complex, warm, generous and remarkably intense aromas that are still floral introduce wonderfully rich, equally intense mouth coating flavors of superb length. This is very classy juice offering impressive depth and a classic Richebourg drinking experience. There is the barest trace of finishing rusticity though the tannins are clearly finer than either the Ech, Grands Ech or RSV. This has always been one of my favorite vintages for DRC's Richebourg and this bottle was in perfect condition. An outstanding wine that is drinking perfectly. Several examples tasted though with variable results. The bottle reviewed here is the best of any that I have tried but in general, the notes are very consistent." (11/2009)

Bid on this 1.5 liter 1-bottle lot of 2002 M. Chapoutier "Le Pavillon" Ermitage (1.5L) (91RP, 90WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "As extraordinary as the 2003s are, I was also blown away by the 2002s produced by Chapoutier, some of which are among the top wines of this challenging vintage. As I have said so many times over the last 15 years, the top Chapoutier wines are meant for very long term drinking, and are not designed for immediate gratification. Everything Chapoutier is doing, from his bio-dynamically farmed vineyard to tiny yields, extended fermentations, indigenous yeasts, and no fining or filtration, is done to produce the essence of a vineyard and a vintage. His track record since 1989 and 1990 admirably proves that these are indeed remarkable wines made by a young genius who refuses to compromise. Michel Chapoutier has been misunderstood by some of his peers, and there is a lot of jealousy when someone this young is so incredibly talented, but it is an irrefutable fact

Bid on this 1.5 liter 1-bottle lot of 2000 Clos des Papes Chateauneuf-du-Pape (1.5L) (95RP, 91ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape reveals 14.6% alcohol, and is stylistically similar to the great 1990. The 2000 is open-knit and fat, with higher levels of glycerin as well as a more corpulent style than the structured, backward 2001. A deep ruby/purple color is followed by sweet, black cherry/kirsch liqueur-like notes presented in a voluptuous, full-throttle, intense style. It is already revealing such secondary nuances as pepper, garrigue, and truffles. Chewy, full-bodied, and moderately tannic, this cuvee is accessible, but not ready to drink. The wine is displaying plenty of tannin, huge body, and sweet black currant fruit intermixed with minerals and subtle oak. Allen Meadows - Burghound: "* Outstanding * An interesting nose of raspberry liqueur and underbrush is followed by fruit-driven, delicious and notably sweet flavors that are less refined than those of the Volnay but offer more depth and breadth. This is really quite a lovely effort that could be approached now but will definitely benefit from another 3 to 5 years of cellar time." (04/2006)

2003 Monbousquet, St-Emilion (1.5L)
Bid on this magnum of 2003 Monbousquet, St-Emilion (1.5L) (93RP, 90ST, 90WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This was an amazing performance for Monbousquet. The 2003 exhibits plenty of fat and succulence along with a full-bodied, sexy mouthfeel, and lots of black cherry and black currant fruit intermixed with licorice, baking spices and roasted herbs. Fully mature yet in no danger of falling apart or in decline, the color remains a healthy plum/garnet to the rim. This full throttle 2003 was one of the great buys of the vintage when it was first released, and continues to prove that great winemaking and viticultural management from less heralded terroirs can result in wines well-above their pedigree. Drink this beauty over the next 2-3 years. (RP)" (08/2014)

2005 Thierry-Allemand Cornas "Reynard"
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2005 Thierry-Allemand Cornas "Reynard" (96WS, 95ST). Wine Spectator: "Densely packed, with tar, olive and maduro tobacco notes up front, holding the massive core of braised fig, plum sauce and tar at bay for now. The muscular finish shows flashes of iron, garrigue and graphite. Very, very long. Best from 2011 through 2024." (02/2009)

Full-bodied, with layers of silky fruit and masses of currant, mineral and berry character. Amazing. It's a wine with perfect structure, perfect strength. It's 1961 Latour in modern clothes. It's hard not to drink it now." (02/2005)

2002 Denis Bachelet Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru "Vieilles Vignes"
Bid on this bottle of 2002 Denis Bachelet Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru "Vieilles Vignes" (93BH). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "This is still displaying plenty of wood spice and while it by no means dominates the otherwise spicy black currant, earth and ever-so-slightly sauvage suffused nose, it is not subtle either. There is lovely richness and a refined texture to the medium-bodied and solidly concentrated flavors that possess focused power and excellent depth on the impressively long and beautifully balanced finale. This is one of those wines that one either loves or not as I very much like the overall complexity and the sheer depth of material is remarkable. That said the wood is sufficiently apparent that it may cause some to enjoy the wine less and for my taste it is more than I personally care for; still, there can be no doubt that this is a very high quality effort. In terms of drinkability the '02 Charmes is approaching its peak though it should hold effortlessly for years to com

Bid on this bottle of 2003 Sylvain Cathiard Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru "Les Malconsorts" ((90-93BH)). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "*Outstanding* Stylistically, this is quite similar to the Suchots but the flavor profile delivers more size, weight, punch, power and structure with wonderfully deep, muscular and sappy flavors plus there is real lift on the notably long finish. This is reference standard stuff, particularly so for the vintage as no one makes better Malconsorts. " (01/2005)

1990 Margaux, Margaux
Bid on this bottle of 1990 Margaux, Margaux (100RP, 98ST, 98WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I had this wine both in Seoul, Korea in February, and from my cellar in December, 2008, and it was remarkable how identical the wines smelled and tasted. It offers an extraordinary aromatic display of spring flowers, camphor, sweet red and black fruits, a hint of licorice, and no evidence of its 100% new oak cask aging. Round and generous with low acidity, but an opulent, full-bodied richness that is fresh with laser-like precision, this stunning wine is just beginning to reach its plateau of full maturity, where it should remain for another three decades. A sensational effort, it is one of the legendary wines made at Chateau Margaux." (06/2009)

Extremely rich and concentrated, with its medium to full body leavened by bright citrus notes and compelling minerality. Great inner-mouth aromas. Conveys an impression of powerful yet remarkably fine raw materials. The spicy finish offers exceptional persistence and richness." (11/1999)

2000 Domaine Vincent Dauvissat Chablis Grand Cru "Les Clos"
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2000 Domaine Vincent Dauvissat Chablis Grand Cru "Les Clos" (95BH, 95ST). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Very pale but bright color. Extremely reticent, soil-driven nose hints at pineapple and sweet spices; a pure expression of this great site. Like liquid silk on the palate: enters velvety-smooth, then expands to the point where it virtually too big for the mouth. A wine of great purity and breed, riper and richer than its 12.8% alcohol would suggest. There was literally more taste and texture in my mouth after I spit this wine. But the Preuses is even longer.
