2013 Cep (Peay Vineyards) Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

Antonio Galloni: "The 2013 Pinot Noir is a tasty, fruity red to drink over the next year or two, while the fruit retains its juiciness. Hints of rose petal and cinnamon add attractive layers of complexity. The 2013 is 70% declassified Peay juice and 30% fruit purchased from nearby properties. Peay does an excellent job with Cep, their sister label of budget-friendly wines. All of these current releases are tasty. The Syrah is the standout, as it is made up of declassified barrels of the two Peay vineyard designate, Syrahs, while the other wines are conceived from the out ...Read More »

2007 Peay "La Bruma" Sonoma Coast Syrah

93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright purple. Vibrant raspberry, cherry, potpourri and incense on the sharply focused, highly expressive nose. Dense, juicy and sweet, with graceful strawberry and raspberry flavors and a supple, seamless texture. Picks up spiciness and floral character, as well as a hint of smoke, with a few minutes of aeration. Finishes very long, with gentle tannins and a strong note of candied flowers. I marginally prefer this wine's elegance to the power of the Les Titans today." (5/2010) K&L Notes: La Bruma ("the mist or fog") pays tribute to the role fog plays in producing th... Read More »

2007 Peay Vineyards "Les Titans" Estate Sonoma Coast Syrah

92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Inky violet. Powerful aromas of crushed blackcurrant, violet, black pepper and olive. Lush and sappy, with deeply concentrated black and blue fruit and spice flavors energized by smoky minerality. Nothing thick or heavy about this wine, which packs a real punch. Finishes with enticing spicy lift and very good persistence. This should be even better with a bit of bottle age." (6/2010)

2008 Peay Vineyards "Les Titans" Estate Sonoma Coast Syrah

93 points from Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Glass-staining purple. Spicy raspberry and candied cherry aromas are complicated by smoky minerals, dark chocolate and fresh violet. Sweet red berry flavors show very good depth and definition, with subtle anise, smoke and violet pastille qualities building with air. The clean finish offers a brisk bite of cracked pepper, a touch of darker fruit and very persistent spiciness. This very seductive syrah displays no rough edges and wonderful energy." 2012 Cep (Peay Vineyards) Sonoma Coast Syrah

90 points Antonio Galloni: "The 2012 Syrah Estate is gorgeous. Dark, red and plummy, the 2012 impresses for the purity of its fruit and radiance. Peay does not have a mid-tier Sonoma Coast bottling, so all the fruit that does not go into the two single-vineyard Syrahs goes into this tasty, entry-level bottling. Sweet floral notes grace the silky finish. Peay does an excellent job with Cep, their sister label of budget-friendly wines. All of these current releases are tasty. The Syrah is the standout, as it is made up of declassified barrels of the two Peay vineyard designate, Syra ...Read More »

2009 Peay Vineyards "La Bruma" Estate Sonoma Coast Syrah

94 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright ruby. Heady, exotically perfumed bouquet of blackberry, cherry-cola, licorice and incense, with a note of violet in the background. Sweet, ripe, silky and expansive, with a nervy spine of acidity providing focus to the sweet red and dark berry compote flavors. Sexy and approachable already but this seamless, very long syrah has the depth to age." (5/2012) K&L Notes: Peay's estate La Bruma Vineyard is one of the coolest sites in California growing Syrah. This translates to a style of Syrah more reminiscent in aroma and flavor to those produced in France's Rh... Read More »

2008 Peay Vineyards "La Bruma" Estate Sonoma Coast Syrah

93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright purple. Sexy black raspberry and floral aromas are complicated by smoky minerals, Moroccan spices and a hint of licorice. Silky, alluringly sweet dark berry flavors pack a serious punch but come off as almost weightless, with tangy minerality adding spine and back-end cut. Gains weight and power with air and finishes with lingering smokiness and a hint of candied violet. This clocks in at a low 13.4% alcohol but hardly wants for power, depth or ripeness." (5/2011) Wine & Spirits: "A warm Syrah with the caramelized flavors of toasted oak, this is gentle, peppery and ...Read More »

2012 Aubert "UV Vineyard" Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

94 points Antonio Galloni: "A classic expression of the Russian River emerges from the 2012 Pinot Noir UV Vineyard. Sweet black cherries, hard candy, cloves, mint and spices meld together in a rich, sumptuous Pinot endowed with plenty of distinction. The flavors are dark, bold and juicy to the core. The 2012 will appeal most to readers who enjoy the exuberance of Russian River Pinots." (2/2014) 92-94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Even better is the 2012 Pinot Noir UV. Made from Calera and Vosne-Romanee clones, it exhibits opulent notes of blueberries, black raspberries, graphite, forest floor and unsmoked cigar tobacco ...Read More »

2010 Denner "Ditch Digger" Paso Robles Rhône Blend

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Another 2010 that is drinking brilliantly, the 2010 The Ditch Digger is a blend of 40% Grenache, 30% Syrah, 20% Mourvedre, 5% Counoise and 5% Cinsault that spent 16 months in 35% new 500-liter puncheons. Giving up deep plum, blackberry, mineral and earth, with additional floral qualities developing in the glass, this full-bodied, elegant blend has knockout purity of fruit, beautiful richness and no shortage of length on the finish. It will continue to dish out loads of pleasure over the coming 6-7 years or more. Drink now-2020. (JD)" (8/2013)93 points Wine Spectator: "Weaves togeth ...Read More »

2009 Peay Vineyards Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright red. An energetic, focused nose offers raspberry, cherry, fresh flowers, medicinal herbs and Asian spices. Then juicy, powerful and youthfully taut in the mouth, with very good mid-palate depth and expansive red berry flavors. The precise, refreshingly brisk finish leaves behind intense floral and mineral notes, along with a hint of white pepper." (6/2011)92 points Wine & Spirits: "Bold cherry and black raspberry flavors cut through the cool, earthy power of this wine like a shaft of sunlight through the coastal fog. The soft richness of the tannin carries an herbal note, ...Read More »

2009 Kenneth Volk Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon

From the winery: "This elegant wine has a rich ruby hue and offers aromas and flavors of ripe dark plum fruit with a subtle hint of cigar box spice. Typical to Paso Robles, the tannins are soft, silky and approachable, but provide beautiful structure and balance to the wine. There is a plush, polished quality to the mouthfeel, followed by excellent length. We suggest pairing the 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon with grilled or braised beef, lamb, or venison; rich, hearty sauces, and aged cow or sheep's milk cheeses."

2012 Aubert "Eastside Vineyard" Russian River Valley Chardonnay

99 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "No tasting note." (12/2014)95 points Antonio Galloni: "Smoke, slate, yellow orchard fruit, honey and apricot notes flesh out in the 2012 Chardonnay Eastside Vineyard, another of Mark Aubert's sites planted with the Montrachet clone. The heavy presence of rocks in this vineyard gives the wines a sense of energy that balances the overtness of the fruit. Even with all of the richness, there is plenty of detail and nuance in the glass." 2005 Gemstone "Facets" Yountville Proprietary Red (1.5L)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Facets is elegant, austere by the standards of California, and almost a dead-ringer for a Medoc from Bordeaux. The wine is dark ruby/purple-tinged with a floral, restrained nose of sweet cherries and soil and undertones of underbrush and barrique. The wine is medium-bodied, pretty, pure, and represents an attractive, French-styled blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot. It should drink nicely for 10-12 years." (12/2007)

1974 Robert Mondavi "Reserve" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (high shoulder)

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A consistent star of the vintage, this fully mature wine exhibits no sign of losing its fruit. The color is saturated dark plum/garnet with slight amber at the edge. The bouquet has always been ostentatious, with pungent aromas of cassis, pepper, herbs, licorice, cedar, and Asian spices. Full-bodied and superbly balanced, with that layered, expansive richness found in top, highly extracted wines, the acidity is low but sound, and the tannin has nearly melted away. This stunning, opulent, complex California Cabernet Sauvignon should continue to drink well ...Read More »

2013 Kenneth Volk "Jaybird—Unoaked" Santa Maria Valley Chardonnay New!
2013 Kenneth Volk "Jaybird—Unoaked" Santa Maria Valley Chardonnay

Jancis Robinson: "Special blocks are used for this unoaked wine: Sierra Madre and Cottonwood Canyon Vineyards. Peachy nose, lots of racy fruit. A bit hard on the end. Correct and fast fade." (3/2015) K&L Notes: From the winery: "The 2013 Jaybird has a distinct mineral, flinty aroma that is support by nuances of sliced pear and pineapple guava. On the palate, this wine is clean with refreshing acidity and flavors of apple and pear. This wine can be enjoyed as an aperitif, or paired with cuisine that calls for more acidity. It pairs well with raw fish and shellfish, or with sautéed seaf... Read More »
