2011 Happy Canyon "K&L-Doug Margerum Cuvee" Happy Canyon Red Wine Top Pick!
2011 Happy Canyon "K&L-Doug Margerum Cuvee" Happy Canyon Red Wine

The wine is made up of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. It drinks well right now but should hold for 2-3 years. Several of the K&L staff had a chance to go down and spend a couple hours with Doug and his crew at the winery. The thought was to make a red blend from Happy Canyon, which K&L had never done before. Happy Canyon is the smallest AVA in Santa Barbara County. It lies north and west of Lake Cachuma and is home to six major vineyards: Cimarone, Grassini, Happy Canyon Vineyard, McGinley, Star Lane, and Vo... Read More »

2012 Habit Santa Barbara County Bordeaux Blend (Previously $35)

90 points Antonio Galloni: "(30% new oak): Inky ruby. Red- and blackcurrant, cherry, pipe tobacco and cedar aromas reminded me of Bordeaux. Smoky cherry and cassis flavors show good energy and gain weight with aeration, picking up a peppery nuance on the back half. Finishes sappy and persistent, with sneaky tannins and a late jolt of sweet red fruit." (12/2014)

1982 Kalin Cellars Reserve Santa Barbara Cabernet Sauvignon

92 points John Gilman: "I do not generally think of Santa Barbara County as Cabernet country, but this 1982 from Kalin Cellars is outstanding (and may get me to re-think the potential for this variety in Santa Barbara). The wine tips the scales at an impressive twelve percent alcohol and offers up a deep, complex and nicely weedy nose of black cherries, a touch of mocha, dark soil tones, woodsmoke, herbal nuances and a touch of tariness. In many ways, this reminds me quite a bit of an old fashioned, mature bottle of St. Emilion. On the palate the wine is... Read More »

1980 Kalin Cellars Santa Barbara Cabernet Sauvignon

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I am a fan of much of what proprietor Terry Leighton produces. Kalin's superb Sauvignon Blancs, long-lived, complex Chardonnays, and earthy, Cote de Nuits-like Pinot Noirs are complex, distinctive wines. The Cabernet Sauvignon has never been made in a forward, easy to understand and drink style. Given sufficient age, my experience has been that most Kalin Cabernets will provide interesting drinking..." (8/1996) K&L Notes: Wesson & Rosengarten - Food & Wine Companion: "If Kalin Cellars proprietor Terry Leighton were a painter instead of a molecular geneticist, he'd be... Read More »

1979 Kalin Cellars Santa Barbara Cabernet Sauvignon

John Gilman: "...One has to recognize that the high octane, "hedonistic" side of California Cabernet is made out of concious choice, rather than forced by circumstance, and is produced either because the winemaker and/or proprietor really likes this kind of over the top jam juice or thinks that they can make more money crafting these kind of wines. Of course, with alcohol levels well under thirteen percent, classic Cabernet's such as Kalin's start out life with plenty of structure and are not going to win any beauty pageants out of the blocks these days!... 1979 Kalin Cellars Santa Barbara Cabernet Sauvignon (high shoulder, soiled label)

Wesson & Rosengarten - Food & Wine Companion: "If Kalin Cellars proprietor Terry Leighton were a painter instead of a molecular geneticist, he'd be Jackson Pollack. From speaking with him you know that he's put theory, patient practice and resolve into his winemaking... In the winery Leighton follows the best (and riskiest) Burgundian farmyard tradition - small barrels and 100 percent malolactic fermentation and aging on the lees - to capture all of the wine's flavors. He then leaves the wine unfiltered to preserve it. This is California winemaking with ... Read More »
