2010 Arnaldo Caprai Rosso di Montefalco (Elsewhere $20)

90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good deep red with ruby highlights. Expressive aromas of raspberry, violet and tea leaf on the perfumed, Sangiovese-dominated nose. Dense and sweet, boasting lovely depth and plenty of framing energy to its blueberry and sour red cherry flavors. Building but polished tannins coat the palate on the long, bright finish. Very impressive Montefalco Rosso." (3/2013)90 points Wine Enthusiast: "The entire line-up from Arnaldo Caprai has been very successful this year. This blend of Sangiovese, Sagrantino and Merlot delivers a smooth mouthfeel and ripe fruit flavors, with background tone ...Read More »

The Tralivio is made in a clean crisp style from some of Sartarelli's oldest vines. Antonio Galloni says, "When the mood strikes for Verdicchio, Sartarelli is often one of my go-to houses. 2009 Vie di Romans "Ciampagnis Vieris" Chardonnay 375ml (Previously $16)

91 points James Suckling: "A rich and fruit Chardonnay with apple pie and milk aromas and flavors. Full and fruity, with lots going on. Always excellent." (12/2011)90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good, medium yellow color with gold highlights. Bright, pure aromas of tropical fruit, lime and white pepper. Dense, supple and fresh, offering bright orchard fruit, butter and pineapple flavors that gain depth and spiciness with air. In an exuberant, in-your-face, fruit-filled New World style, but avoids coming across as an over-the-top caricature. Serious unoaked chardonnay with impressive purity." 2012 Il Palagio "When We Dance" Toscana (Elsewhere $18)

Jancis Robinson: "The entry-level wine from Sting and Trudie Tyler's estate in Tuscany. A blend of Sangiovese, Canaiolo and Colorino which doesn't see any oak. Quite pale, very bright ruby. Bright aromas too - cough sweets and aniseed balls and sweet-sour cherry. Slightly raw fruit on the palate. Chewy tannins. Plenty of fresh acidity and no specious sweetness of fruit but without tremendous depth, and short on the finish. Cheerful, though." Wine Spectator: "A rich, fruity style, exuding cherry, raspberry, licorice and spice flavors. Finishes with a solid grip of tannins. Drink now through ...Read More »

2012 Abtei Muri Sudtirol "Weiss" (Super Bianco) (Previously $30)

The 2012 Abtei Muri Sudtirol "Weiss" is a blend of 70% Pinot Bianco and 30% Pinot Grigio grown in the village of Appiano/Eppan in a southeast facing vineyard with predominantly gravelly limestone soils at elevations from 1500 to over 2000 feet, with vines aged 20-30 years. The wines from this area exhibit a persistent saltiness to go along with the excellent acidic balance. Winemaker Christian Werth ferments in stainless steel and then ages it for 15 months in large wooden casks with a weekly lees stirring. This wine can age easily for another 5-8 year... Read More »

2009 Tassi Brunello di Montalcino (Previously $50)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Brunello di Montalcino is a pretty and nuanced wine that paints a more complete picture of the 2009 vintage. It opens to a compelling dark color and shows good density in the glass with dark ruby and garnet highlights. The bouquet is masculine and savory with deep renderings of dried fruit, spice, leather, cola and licorice. Within a few moments, very distant tones of black truffle and earthly highlights begin to emerge from the glass and give the wine that extra Sangiovese character you look for in Brunello. There’s more texture here as well. N ...Read More »

2010 Domenico Clerico "Pajana" Barolo (Previously $85)

94 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good medium red. Less expressive on the nose than the Briccotto, hinting at ripe, musky plum, black raspberry, menthol and tobacco. Then smooth and sweet in the mouth, but with terrific energy keeping the red fruit and tobacco flavors fresh and primary. Sweeter and more elegant in style than the 2009, but this fine-grained, firmly tannic wine really shut down in the glass. Outstanding potential here." (12/2013)93 points James Suckling: "A solid wine for the vintage with pretty fruit such as cherry and plum, as well as a light minerality. Full body with chewy tannins and a polis ...Read More »

2011 Cantine Viola "Rosso Viola" Calabria (Previously $23)

Jancis Robinson: "Magliocco. Deep ruby with the beginning of orange on the nose. Pretty nose of oak and leafy fruit and already a little mature. Still a bit closed on the fruit on the palate and the tannins and acidity make it a little austere. Long perfumed finish with hints of oak. (WS)" (10/2013) K&L Notes: The 2011 Cantine Viola Rosso is 100% Magliocco from Calabria, and sees no wood aging at all, just fermentation in stainless steel and then bottle age. The wine’s aromatics are untamed; it smells of wild brush and roasted meats and while those aromatics are profound they seem to ... Read More »

2008 Schiavenza "Broglio" Barolo Riserva (Previously $65)

94 points Wine Spectator: "Licorice, tar and menthol aromas and flavors lead off, with the cherry and plum fruit suppressed for now. This is fluid and firmly structured, with dusty tannins lining the finish. A bit awkward now, yet has enough sweet fruit to match the tannins. Best from 2018 through 2033. 330 cases made. –BS" (12/2014)

2010 Angelo Germano "Rué" Barolo (Previously $65)

93 points James Suckling: "Aromas of tar and asphalt combined with strawberries follow through to a full-bodied, juicy Barolo with fine tannins and a beautiful acid/fruit balance. Long on the finish, and although a bit oaky now, this will be excellent in 2016." (8/2014) K&L Notes: Started by Angelo Germano in 1908, this estate has been run by the fourth generation of Germanos--Davide--since the 1990s. (Davide's first complete vintage was 1998.) 2009 Tassi "Franci" Brunello di Montalcino (Previously $90) Top Pick!
2009 Tassi "Franci" Brunello di Montalcino (Previously $90)

93 points James Suckling: "A wine with blueberry and chocolate character. Medium body with hints of orange peel and cocoa. Lot of dried strawberries too. A small Brunello production with soul. Top cuvée. Drink or hold." (2/2014)90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good full red. Sexy aromas of ripe raspberry, sweet spices, tobacco and quinine, plus mineral and truffle nuances. Fresh and vibrant on the palate, with a strong spine of acids and tannins nicely supporting the wine's underlying rich, ripe red-fruit sweetness. Finishes with excellent length and balance." 2008 Tassi "Franci" Brunello di Montalcino Riserva (Previously $120)

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2008 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Franci lays on good foundations despite the overall austerity of the 2008 vintage. True to the Riserva moniker, there’s an extra dose of intensity here, a riper style, bright acidity at the back and an added layer of firmness or astringency to the tannins. Even the alcohol feels slightly warmer in the 2008 Riserva compaired to the two 2009 Brunellos although it is not (14% compared to 14.5% for the two 2009 wines). In summary, this wine does exactly with Brnello Riserva should do: It brings you a little bit more of ...Read More »

Succulent fruit with a muscular tannic structure and multilayered finish, but not nearly ready. 2009 La Mozza "Aragone" Maremma Toscana (Previously $38)

90 points Wine & Spirits: "Scents of dried cherries and candied orange give this a sense of sweetness, but the wine is dry, with a dusty soil character and bitter chocolate tannins. A blend of sangiovese with alicante, syrah and carignan, this is juicy, firm and Italianate in its lasting, Baroque complexity." (4/2014)

2008 Sesta di Sopra Brunello di Montalcino

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Sesta di Sopra’s 2008 Brunello di Montalcino is rather closed in its aromatics, but is more expressive on the palate, where layers of dark red fruit come alive. Smoke, tar, licorice, scorched earth and smoke add an attractive element of gravitas on the finish. Deceptively medium in body, the 2008, nevertheless, packs a serious punch. The long, superbly delineated finish bodes well for the future, but the 2008 needs time in bottle to settle down a bit more. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026." 2005 Le Piane Boca (Previously $90)

From the Boca DOC in Piemonte, Le Piane makes this bottling of Nebbiolo (85%) and Vespolina (15%). From the importer (not vintage specific): "The mineral composition of the porphyry soil together with the characteristics of the Nebbiolo grapes create in 'Boca' a full expressive wine. Flavors are reminiscent of well-matured wood berries, tobacco and leather with hints of balsamic and citrus fruits. Power and silky elegance develop in the mouth which plays with a slightly noble-bitter finish."
