2012 Château de la Charrière Bourgogne Rouge Domaine Yves Girardin Top Pick!
2012 Château de la Charrière Bourgogne Rouge Domaine Yves Girardin

From estate vineyards just south of Chielly-lès-Maranges. The 2012 Bourgogne has a very pretty nose with notes of red cherries and raspberries. On the palate it shows quite a bit more weight and structure. This is, despite its modest price, concentrated serious wine that still manages to remain charming and most attractive in character. 2011 Jacques Bavard Monthelie Rouge Back In Stock!
2011 Jacques Bavard Monthelie Rouge

This exciting Pinot Noir comes from the picturesque village of Monthelie, located next to the more famous village of Volnay. It is from a tiny negociant in Puligny-Montrachet named Jacques Bavard. He comes from a long line of wine-growers, and is dedicated to working with organic and biodynamic growers. This comes from 30-year-old vines, and underwent a long cold soak to extract more aromatic elements. It is bigger and richer than the Auxey-Duresses on the palate, with lovely cherry fruit and quite a bit of structure to match it. It's aromatically charmi... Read More »

2012 Domaine Faiveley Mercurey "Clos Rond" Top Pick!
2012 Domaine Faiveley Mercurey "Clos Rond"

The Mercurey Clos Rond comes from a single vineyard in Mercurey. The name means "the walled vineyard in that brambly area," derived from the local word "Ronde" instead of the more usual French "Ronce," meaning brambles. In a land where ownership is usually splintered, this vineyard is a rare case where the entire vineyard is under one owner, Domaine Faiveley. It lies on a gentle slope, with rich red-brown soil, a fairly high clay content and buried limestone beneath. The result is a Pinot Noir displaying rich, round fruit, both red and black, and just a ... Read More »

Allen Meadows - Burghound: "This possess a deep color for a Chorey along with an attractive nose of kirsch, plum and earth nuances. Here too there is good volume to the medium-bodied flavors that have a suave and very round mouth feel, all wrapped in a mildly rustic finish that delivers fine depth and length for what this is. Worth considering for value." (4/2014) Jancis Robinson: "A touch of farmyard here, plus some bright, tasty herbal notes. Leathery and dark to finish. 2012 Domaine Faiveley Mercurey "Villeranges"

On the border between Rully and Mercurey in the Cote Chalonnaise, Domaine Faiveley sources their "Les Villeranges" from an east-facing vineyard planted in clay-limestone soils. The vines were planted between 1965 and 1982 and Faiveley only produces 200 cases of this cuvee annually. This has darker and denser fruit than the 2011, but retains the supple entry and lovely red and black fruit notes on the palate. (Keith Wollenberg, K&L Burgundy Buyer, 02/2015)

One of the highlights in this range, the 2012 boasts stunning power, depth and harmony. The lifted aromatics recall the Ursules, but here the fruit possesses more volume and creaminess. 2012 Domaine Ragot Givry Vieilles Vignes

One of the most difficult combinations to find in young, inexpensive red Burgundy is that ever-longing, haunting essence of forest floor and baking spices, along with just the right amount of ripe raspberry fruit. Burgundy is cold, which means that often times the fruit just doesn't ripen the way it does in other pinot noir-growing parts of the world. Tart cranberry or tannic blackberry will often await your lips upon first sip; a sign that the wine needs a few years in the cellar to soften up before drinking. But what are we to drink while we wait?! Thi... Read More »

One is in Chorey-les-Beaune, just below Aloxe-Corton, in a lovely organically and biodynamically farmed vineyard called "Les Champs Long." Other fruit comes from Savigny-les-Beaune and Pernand-Vergelesses. The result is a lovely wine, with bright and charming fruit, a lovely mid-palate and a soft and pretty finish. 2013 Domaine Desertaux-Ferrand Bourgogne Rouge

Located in the heart of the vineyards of Burgundy, on the border of the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune, this estate was established in 1899 by Amable Désertaux. The area was then about three hectares. It was not until the arrival of Bernard and Janine Désertaux that it grew to 12 ha. The installation of their children, Christine and Vincent in 1995 and 2000, has resulted in some very fine wines, and as they still fly under the radar, these are very affordable, too! Delineation, tension and energy are the hallmarks. This is a beautifully balanced wine in its class. It is very vibrant and alive with the sturcture a bit tight and compressed from the recent bottling (it was bottled 10 days before I tasted it).
