Ettore Spina and his wife, Enrica Bandirola, owners of Sesta di Sopra, planted a new vineyard to Sangiovese in 2005. It has the same Galestro soils as the Brunello vineryard, perfect for taming Sangiovese's natural vigor. Unfortunately, in Montalcino all of the Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino vineyards are all registered and controlled, and they aren't allowing any more to be added right now, so the wine that comes from this new vineyard has to be designated an IGT (Indicates Geographic Tipicity). The 2013 Sesta di Sopra Sangiovese is just... Read More »
96 points James Suckling: "A layered and rich red with a light prune, plum and berry character, as well as hints of walnuts. Full-bodied, chewy and tannic yet showing polish and refinement. An almost iodine undertone. Better in 2016." (1/2015)95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Talenti's 2010 Brunello di Montalcino sees fruit sourced from the Sant'Angelo in Colle subzone of the appellation. This is a very satisfactory expression with pretty mineral tones of ash and crushed stone that form sharp contours against ripe fruit, prune and blackberry. The wine is linear and extremely well defined. The high quality of fruit ...Read More »
90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Round and smooth, this delivers sensations of strawberry, wild cherry, raspberry, pine forest, menthol and cake spices. The concentrated flavors are balanced by supple tannins and fresh acidity. Enjoy this over the next few years." (10/2014)
Azienda Agricola Barone Cornacchia was esablished in 1577. Now organically farmed from stony calcareous soils, this 100% Montepulciano d’Abruzzo displays a deep ruby color with a perfumed and plummy bouquet. The rounded and intense palate shows persistance and fine tannins which pairs well with grilled meats, pasta, and hard cheese.
96 points James Suckling: "Glorious ripe fruit to this wine with blackberry and cherry character. Full body, soft and silky tannins and a long and flavorful finish. Gorgeous young Brunello. Better after 2018 but so wonderful now to taste!" (12/2014)92 points Antonio Galloni: "Villa I Cipressi's 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is a pretty, straightforward wine with plenty of Sangiovese typicity. Underbrush, tobacco, worn-in leather, licorice, game and crushed flowers add nuance as the 2010 opens up in the glass. The 2010 isn't an obvious wine, but it slowly works its charms, showing understated refinement and terr ...Read More »
94 points Antonio Galloni: "La Poderina's 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is a classic wine from this southern edge of Montalcino. Dark red cherry, plum, smoke, spice and leather notes open up in a rich, resonant wine bursting at the seams with personality. The 2010 needs a few years to soften, but it is already striking and absolutely delicious. -- Antonio Galloni" (2/2015)94 points James Suckling: "A gorgeous red with dark-berry, blueberry and violet character. Full body, fine, integrated tannins with dark chocolate, and a delicious finish. Lots of everything here. Very balanced. Formally La Poderina. Drink in ...Read More »
96 points James Suckling: "This is so dense and beautiful and has such amazing depth of fruit and power. Full body with massive intensity and length. Chewy but polished and balanced. This is just a baby still: Try in 2018." (10/2014)90 points Wine Spectator: "Enticing aromas of violet and black currant are complemented by cherry, leather and spice flavors. The tannins are a bit gruff, but there is ample sweet fruit. Needs food. Drink now through 2020. (Web Only—2015)"
Antonio Galloni: "Lavender, violets, plums and black cherries lift from the glass in the 2013 Dolcetto d'Alba. A weightless, polished wine, the 2013 impresses for its exceptional balance and silky finish. This is one of the more refined Dolcettos readers will find. Boschis sources fruit from Ravera di Monforte, Le Coste di Monforte and Mosconi for her Dolcetto. (AG)" (11/2014)
94 points James Suckling: "Beautiful texture to this wine with soft, velvety tannins that caress every inch of your palate. Full body and a long, long finish. Wonderful. Drink now." (9/2014)94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Made from Sangiovese grown in high-altitude vineyards, this earthy wine features aromas of perfumed berry, leather, cake spice, blue flower and herb. The palate delivers juicy sour cherry, wild strawberry, white pepper, game, mint and orange peel alongside firm, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity. A licorice note closes the lingering finish. It’s still youthfully austere and needs time. Drin ...Read More »
The 2013 vintage has not yet been reviewed, but the 2012 earned 90 points from Wine Enthusiast: "Red cherry extract, violet, vanilla, orange zest and sweet baking spices all burst from the glass of this hearty Rosso. The juicy fruit is supported by supple tannins while the smooth texture makes this very accessible. Enjoy it now–2016."
91 points Antonio Galloni: "A dark, brooding wine, the 2008 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva boasts terrific depth and intensity in its black cherries, mocha, scorched earth, game and black olives. The flavors are intense and pungent, while slight hints of oxidation suggest the 2008 is on its way to being fully mature. For now, though, the 2008 offers solid overall balance and plenty of personality. (AG)" (5/2014)91 points James Suckling: "A firm, silky wine with hazelnut and berry character. Medium to full body with firm tannins and a fresh, clean finish. Chewy. Give it time to soften. Better in 2016. ...Read More »
Wine Enthusiast: "Aromas recall stewed plum, leather, eucalyptus and a hint of cellar floor. The palate is muddled between candied and bitter sensations, offering red berry, anisette, spearmint, astringent powdered sage and a confectionary note. Assertive tannins leave a drying finish." (5/2015) K&L Notes: From the winery: "Deep ruby red to garnet in colour. Elegant and intense on the nose. In the mouth, dry, full, warm and persistent. Pairs well with tasty pasta dishes, game, roast meats and mature cheeses. Wine well suited to long aging."
94 points James Suckling: "Lots of orange rind and fresh herbs on the nose. Rose petals, too. Full to medium body, soft, silky tannins and a subtle terracotta and stone aftertaste. Fine finish. Made from organic grapes. Drink or hold on release." (1/2015) Jancis Robinson: "Concentrated ruby with orange tinges. Only hints of spice and dried fruit yet complex. Very closed and compact and embryonic on the palate with a big, but not rough structure. Elegant palate weight and finely tuned balance. Just very closed at the moment. (WS)" (1/2015) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Ulisse and Giancarlo Cignozzi's 2010 Brunello di Montalcino show ...Read More »
