1973 Chateau Montelena Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon Back In Stock!
1973 Chateau Montelena Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon

This is the first "Chateau" Cabernet Sauvignon that Montelena produced. The 1973 vintage was a sterling Cabernet vintage, from which the talented (if novice) winemaking staff produced a big, rich, mouth filling wine. In order to develop further complexities through mellowing, an extended aging period of two years in French (Never) and American Oak barrels was necessary. The resulting '73 Cabernet is a skillful balance between power and elegance. 3,000 cases of this wine were made, one wonders how many unopened bottles are still around!

1984 Joseph Swan Northern Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon Back In Stock!
1984 Joseph Swan Northern Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon

While Joseph Swan Vineyards is better known these days for cool climate Pinot Noirs and classic Zinfandels made by Joe Swan's son-in-law Rod Berglund, in the early 1980s Joe himself was still at the helm of this esteemed Forestville winery. Swan was mentored by the legendary BV winemaker André Tchelistcheff (who encouraged him to plant Pinot Noir and Chardonnay), and he hated high-alcohol wines, instead making wines that were balanced and flavorful. This classic, mature bottling should reflect that respect for detail and balance.

1985 Kalin Cellars Reserve Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon

John Gilman: "...One has to recognize that the high octane, "hedonistic" side of California Cabernet is made out of concious choice, rather than forced by circumstance, and is produced either because the winemaker and/or proprietor really likes this kind of over the top jam juice or thinks that they can make more money crafting these kind of wines. Of course, with alcohol levels well under thirteen percent, classic Cabernet's such as Kalin's start out life with plenty of structure and are not going to win any beauty pageants out of the blocks these days!... 1986 Kenwood "Artist Series" Sonoma Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This wine from Kenwood is a monster Cabernet Sauvignon, exhibiting youthful colors, and huge quantities of fruit, extract, glycerin, and tannin. The 1986 Cabernet Sauvignon Artists Series exhibits an opaque purple/plum-like color with light pink at the rim. Its fragrant bouquet offers scents of underbrush, jammy fruit, cedar, pepper, and herbs. Absolutely colossal in the mouth, with huge amounts of fruit, glycerin, and extract, as well as staggeringly painful levels of tannin, this wine needs another 4-6 years of cellaring. It is a massive example of Cal ...Read More »

1987 Kalin Cellars Reserve Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon

94 points John Gilman: "...The superb and utterly classic nose soars from the glass in a constellation of black cherries, cassis, dried eucalyptus, tobacco, superb, stony minerality, a lovely touch of weediness (which I find absolutely proper with Cabernets in this stage of development- in fact, if a wine does not display this characteristic, I often wonder what has been done to suppress this natural side of Cabernet Sauvignon!) and a gentle framing of cedar. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, complex and beautifully balanced, with superb focus... Read More »

1989 Kalin Cellars Reserve Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon

94 points John Gilman: "1989 was a forgotten year for California Cabernets, but the '89 Kalin from their superb Sonoma vineyard source is absolutely brilliant. This is a classic Kalin Cabernet in terms of ripeness, tipping the scales at a very civilized 12.5 percent alcohol and offering up a simply stunning bouquet of black cherries, cassis, Cuban tobacco smoke, dark soil tones, fresh herbs, incipient notes of chipotle peppers and a deft framing of cedar. 1996 Kenwood "Jack London" Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon

Wine Enthusiast: "An interesting wine, with some green herbal elements on the nose, but also a plump, expansive mouthfeel and ripe flavors of chocolate and plum. Still shows some tannins on the finish. Drink now–2010." (12/2005) Wine Spectator: "Somewhat rustic, with drying tannins up front, the smoky oak, blackberry, currant and herb flavors barrel through with muscle, nonetheless. 1997 Fisher "Wedding Vineyard" Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon

This prodigious Cabernet Sauvignon has only gotten better since my tasting last year. 1997 Hanna "Bismark Ranch" Sonoma Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon Bismark Ranch (15.1% alcohol) exhibits a saturated blue/purple color. Notes of blackberries, prunes, and licorice are found in the moderately intense aromatics. On the palate, this thick, unctuously-textured Cabernet reveals sweet tannin, copious amounts of glycerin and fruit, as well as a long, spicy, concentrated finish. There is undoubtedly plenty of tannin lurking beneath the surface. Anticipated maturity: 2001-2015." 2001 Arrowood "Reserve Speciale" Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2001 Arrowood "Reserve Speciale" Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon (95RP, (90-91ST)). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the most underrated Cabernet Sauvignons made in the world is Arrowood’s 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Speciale. Made from an assortment of vineyards in Sonoma, Alexander Valley and Dry Creek, this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon was aged for 23 months in primarily French oak. Its youthful dense purple color is followed by notes of truffles, spring flowers, new saddle leather, creme de cassis, cedar and spice box. Fabulously full-bodied, pure and multidimensional, but still youthful, it is not as backward as the Monte Rosso, and should hit its peak in another 2-4 years and age effortlessly over the following 20-25 years." 2002 Mauritson Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon

A incredibly dense purple color, this 2002 Sonoma County Cabernet is structured and intense. The fruit lingers in the front palate before the complexity of this wine starts to show through. Hints of dust and mint complement the incredible fruit that is still prevalent. 2003 Kenwood "Artist Series" Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon (1.5L)

Connoisseurs Guide: "Even accepting that Cabernet Sauvignon is a grape that delivers its fair share of tannin, this wine goes a little bit overboard in its late parts, and the ripe, rich aromas and reasonably fruity flavors that come before are more than a little bit occluded at the back. Still, there is fruit at its heart, and, for those willing to wait, the wine may well reward their patience." Pure, primary black fruit and mineral flavors framed and enlivened by surprisingly juicy acidity. Very firmly built, vibrant wine with the structure to reward aging. Winemaker Bob Foley noted that Pride's cabernet had better than usual acidity in 2004, and certainly more than in 2003 or 2002; the harvest here lasted into early November. Chocolatey cassis notes intermixed with incense, licorice, and a hint of black olive are present in this wine. When it hits the palate, it comes across as very Pomerol-like, with lushness, full body, and opulence. The tannins are sweet, the pH high, and the wine gorgeously full, pure, dense, and long.
