2012 Kathryn Kennedy "Small Lot Cabernet" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon

Kathryn Kennedy's stature in the Santa Cruz Mountains enables the producer to have access to the best fruit from the finest small vineyards in the appellation. These growers even include residential homeowners whose grapes arrive at the crush pad in very small lots. Limited in production, the Small Lot Cabernet is vinified using the same small-scale techniques employed for Kathryn Kennedy's estate wine. Aged in a combination of French and American oak, this wine shows classic Santa Cruz Mountains brambly black fruits with woodsy spice and distinct minera... Read More »

2010 Domaine Eden Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon

92 points Wine & Spirits: "**Best Buy** Jeffrey Patterson draws on a handful of vineyards—including the Mount Eden estate—to blend this delicious, rustic, well-priced mountain Cabernet. The cool 2010 vintage grew a wine carried by juicy acidity as much as tannins, the flavors tending toward black trumpet mushrooms and tobacco instead of overt fruit. It’s sappy yet elegant, just the thing for a rich autumn dinner that starts with roasted bone marrow and a bowl of chestnut soup." 2012 Mount Eden "Estate" Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir

94 points Wine & Spirits: "Between the oak (75 percent new), the stem character (about 40 percent whole cluster) and the spicy tones of the Mount Eden clone itself, this starts out in an almost stubborn mode—pent up in a tight, mineral structure. It takes two days of air before the wild, brushy fragrance and rose-hip acidity fully sync with the plumpness of the fruit. This is a commanding California Pinot Noir for the cellar, a rugged beauty with length, substance and complexity that feels deliberate and mountain grown. Cellar it for four or five years." 2013 Varner "Spring Ridge Vineyard—Bee Block" Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay

At K&L, we are always HUGE fans of the Varner brothers' wines. These are carefully crafted, terroir-driven Chardonnays that drink well on release and also age very well. This bottling hails from the Bee Block at the Varners' Spring Ridge Vineyard, which features 24-year-old vines planted to a northeast-facing slope. The vines are dry-farmed and worked by hand with no insecticides. The wine is fermented on indigenous yeast and aged in 25% new, French (Bertranges & Troncais) oak.

2010 Mount Eden "Estate" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon

96 points Wine & Spirits: "Most of the fruit for this restrained, savory cabernet comes from cuttings Emmett Rixford purportedly sourced from Château Margaux in the 1890s. Martin Ray propagated his own cuttings from that selection to plant in this vineyard's shallow, shale-laced soils at 1,800 feet of elevation in the 1940s and 50s, and later Jeffrey Patterson replanted it in the 1980s with a selection from those vines. Is it just a coincidence that, tasting this blind, my thoughts turned to a 1985 Margaux I tasted recently? Maybe it was the gentle elasticity of the texture, the v ...Read More »

Osocalis Rare Alambic Brandy 750ml

Osocalis is a small, artisanal distillery in Soquel, California. The name Osocalis is the original Native American name for Soquel, today part of the greater Santa Cruz area. They use a small (100 gallon) antique alambic Charentais still, imported from Cognac, to produce brandies using grapes and apples from the cooler coastal regions of California. They strive to produce products that have the length, elegance and finesse of Old World brandies, such as Cognac and Calvados, but with the fruit intensity and structure of California wines. 92 points Antonio Galloni: "Crushed flowers, sweet red berries, mint, autumn leaves and cinnamon are some of the many notes that lift from the glass in the 2011 Pinot Noir Hidden Block. Savory and incredibly perfumed in the glass, the 2011 captures the essence of this cool, late-ripening vintage in its mid-weight personality. The 2011 is delicate and even a touch fragile, but it is also exceptionally beautiful." Cinnamon, cloves, dried rose petal, mint and leather wrap around a core of expressive fruit in a hauntingly beautiful, vivid Pinot that delivers the very best of the vintage. There is so much to like here, including the wine's effortless, deceptive structure and depth." (11/2013) K&L Notes: This is the flagship wine from the Kathryn Kennedy seven acre estate vineyard in the Santa Cruz Mountains, where the combination of soil type, aspect, and modern organic viticultural techniques results in a profound and ageworthy expression of terroir-driven, Bordeaux-styled California Cabernet vintage after vintage. Nevertheless, it offers beautifully pure black cherry and currant fruit with a striking minerality cutting through the fruit notes. Medium to full-bodied and elegant, it will benefit from 5-6 years of cellaring, and should keep for 20-25 years." (12/2007) Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep ruby-red. A kick of bracing 2011 acidity supports a finish laced with iron, smoke, leather and spices. There is plenty to like in this accessible Merlot from Ridge." (7/2014)90 points Wine & Spirits: "Ridge’s high-elevation vineyards grew a soft, appetizing Merlot in 2011, subtly floral in its aromas, plump and plum-fruited in the middle, mountain tannins tightening at the end. Licorice, earthiness and smoke add complexity as the wine fleshes out on broad-shouldered, intense, savory finish. This is a rare 2011 Pinot that needs more time in bottle to fully unwind. With time in the glass, some of the wilder notes blow off, so readers should plan on giving the Upper Picnic a good bit of air." Honeysuckle, tangerine, apricot, and crème brulee literally jump from the glass A vivid, exotic wine, the 2010 is constantly changing in the glass. Stylistically, the 2010 is a little richer than Mount Eden fans are used to, but all the elements are in the right place. A dense ruby/purple color is accompanied by extravagant, generous aromas of pen ink, lead pencil shavings, spice box and black fruits. The wine is full-bodied and silky textured, but secondary nuances have not yet begun to develop as it is still very primary, tasting more like a 3-4 year old Monte Bello than one that is ten years of age.
