2005 Terredora di Paolo "Pago dei Fusi" Taurasi (Elsewhere $60) Top Pick!
2005 Terredora di Paolo "Pago dei Fusi" Taurasi (Elsewhere $60)

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Taurasi Pago dei Fusi is a huge, explosive wine. It possesses superb delineation of aromas and flavors to match its dark, brooding personality. Sweet balsamic notes develop in the glass, adding further complexity as the wine gradually builds towards a powerful close. The 2005 doesn't appear to quite have the finesse of the 2004, but it comes very close. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025. (AG)" (6/2011)90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Pago dei Fusi is an extremely mineral-driven wine that oozes with aromas of asphalt, wet river stone and crushed brimstone. 1998 Cornaleto Franciacorta Pas Dose

I remember when my salesman approached me on this wine, "Mate, have I got a wine for you and your Club!" he's English so he throws in the occasional Mate or Chap for us Colonials… He explained what he was pitching me, a Bone Dry, Italian sparkling wine that is 15 years old…..needless to say I was a bit circumspect. He continued saying that the wine was 70% Chardonnay, 25% Pinot Noir and 5% Pinot Bianco and had remained on the lees for 12 years. He's actually quite a serious fellow so I said let's pop the cork and see for ourselves, I was actually stunned... Read More »

Dense, supple and fresh, offering bright orchard fruit, butter and pineapple flavors that gain depth and spiciness with air. 1996 Villa Pillo Vin Santo (375ml)

Villa Pillo is situated in the heart of the Chianti region, equidistant from the famed cities of Pisa, Florence and Siena. The winery was purchased by John and Kathe Dyson in 1989, who restored the estate, refurbished the winery and replanted many of the vineyards. Their Vin Santo, however, is made from Trebbiano (80%) and Mavasia (20%) planted in 1968. The best fruit from the harvest is left to dry for five months. The grapes are pressed and the must is left for 24 hours to rest. The wine is then transferred to traditional small casks called "caratelli,... Read More »

Then sweet, rich and creamy, with an exotic quality to the very ripe red cherry and plum flavors. Sound, harmonious acidity keeps the wine fresh. The youthful tannins build on the back end but are very polished, giving this wine a seamless quality." (7/2010)92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Brunello di Montalcino flows from the glass with impressive depth and persistence in its richly-textured dark fruit. 2004 Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino is awesome. This finessed, regal Brunello flows onto the palate with seamless layers of perfumed fruit framed by silky, finessed tannins. The wine remains extremely primary at this stage, and its full range of aromas and flavors have yet to emerge, but the sheer pedigree of this Brunello is unmistakable. The elegant, refined finish lasts an eternity, and subtle notes of menthol, spices, licorice and leather add final notes of complexity. Layered. Needs time. Best after 2012." (6/2008)94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Clerico's 2004 Barolo Pajana is an explosive wine loaded with layers of deeply spiced dark fruit. It is a notably pure, focused version of this wine that is totally compelling for its overall balance. Today the wine is firing on all cylinders. The 2005 can be enjoyed today, but also has more than enough structure and acidity to develop nicely for a number of years. There is tremendous elegance and class in this nuanced Brunello that is at times powerful, while at others more delicate. One of the new garage wines in the region. Best after 2010." (4/2006)91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Located in Castelnuovo dell’Abate, Sesta di Sopra pursues a traditional approach to making its Brunello, which was one of the most pleasant discoveries of my tastings of the 2001 vintage. This is a fairly restrained vintage for the Vin Santo in which some of the wine’s more oxidative qualities are less evident than in other years. Orange peel, burnt sugar, dried flowers and herbs wrap around the generous, inviting finish. Despite its nearly 8 years of age, the 2004 remains very young, with a bright life ahead of it. Originally founded by Sylla Sebaste who succeeded in acquiring some of the coveted "Bricco Viole" vineyard. The current owner of the winery is Fabrizio Merlo who adapted this vineyard source (more famous for long aging Barolo) to make a more easily accessible wine. In most other vintages the Babara would only make up about a third of the blend, but in 2000, he changed to a 50/50 split between Barbera and Nebbiolo. Aging was in oak barriques and the alcohol is a moderate 13%.
