2005 Balestard La Tonnelle, St-Emilion Top Pick!
2005 Balestard La Tonnelle, St-Emilion

Jancis Robinson: "Fine perfume, becoming more meaty. Really moreish, dry and quite firm. Perhaps a little more structure than fruit." (11/2009) Wine & Spirits: "The aroma is complex and layered with rich cherries and smoky oak tones. This is a smooth-textured, traditional St-Emilion. A bit of bottling sulfur will dissipate as the wine ages, and the tannins will soften up for a steak." (10/2008) Wine Spectator: "Vanilla, licorice and violet aromas follow through to a medium-to-full body, with silky tannins and a medium finish. (Web-2008)" K&L Notes: Wow! This wine has really come around in the last few years. It was a bit ... Read More »

2005 Caronne Ste-Gemme, Haut-Médoc

91 points Wine Spectator: "(Smart Buys) Offers raisin and dried fruit, with very ripe fruit aromas and coffee and oak undertones. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long finish. This is pumped up, but I like the flamboyant character. Best after 2011." (3/2008) 88-90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Space limitations did not allow complete tasting notes for this Cru Bourgeois, but 2005 is the finest vintage for these wines since 1982. The range of scores for these wines should give readers an idea of just how consistent this vintage is at this level. Given the style of the vintage, most of these wines should be acces ...Read More »

2005 Coufran, Haut-Médoc

91-93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Barrel sample. If you're looking for great, ripe black currant fruits, this is where to come. The wine is full and hugely fruity, but it still manages a good Bordeaux sense of proportion." (6/2006) James Halliday: "Smokiness dominates the nose at the moment but there’s still evidence of fresh and aromatic cassis underneath. Rich and yet juicy...Drink 2010-2016." (6/2007) Jancis Robinson: "Quite a rich nose and some farmyard elements. Solid and straightforward. Quite chewy tannins at present." 2005 Ormes de Pez, St-Estèphe

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Very dense, black, dominated by dark tannins and plum skins, with a mineral edge. The acidity and the ripe fruits are under all this structure, typical of young Saint-Estèphe. This needs time - don't touch for five years." (6/2008) Wine & Spirits: "Robust blackberry and blueberry scents come up from behind staunch tannins. This is youthfully reduced, the tannins hard. There's an umami savor in the end that should develop into complexity with six to eight years of age." (10/2008) Wine Spectator: "A perfumed young red, with plum and spices. 2005 Valandraud, St-Emilion (Previously $400)

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is one of the most riveting examples of Valandraud Jean-Luc Thunevin has made over the last fifteen years. Thunevin and his partner, Murielle Andraud (who has much of the responsibility for their brilliant Margaux, Marojallia), exhibit impeccable attention to detail, resulting in an inky/blue/purple-colored 2005 Valandraud boasting a sweet nose of melted chocolate, licorice, graphite, espresso roast, and copious quantities of black cherries and blackberries. 2005 Blason d'Issan, Margaux

Jancis Robinson: "Troisième Cru Classé. 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. The first known reference to Issan dates back to the 12th Century, when Guyenne was occupied by the English. At the beginning of the last century, the great name of Issan went into decline, until the Cruse family bought it in 1945. Blason d’Issan, the second wine, is made from a blend of grapes from both younger and older vines to make a more approachable Margaux for slightly earlier drinking. Deeply coloured as befits the vintage. Intense pure dark fruit melded with restrained oak spice. Juic ...Read More »

2005 Pontet-Canet, Pauillac

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The work that Alfred Tesseron and his winemaking team have done at this estate since 1994 is remarkable. At this fabulous terroir just south of Mouton-Rothschild, Tesseron has made major investments, and instituted incredibly severe selections in both the vineyard and winery. The result is a succession of extraordinary wines. It is difficult to know whether the 2005 Pontet-Canet will ultimately eclipse the hedonism and density of the flamboyant 2003, but it is unquestionably a stunning effort. Consume it over the next 5-6 years. (RP)" (8/2008) Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright, deep red. Wild aromas of black raspberry, mocha and truffle. Lush and sweet if a bit simple, with flavors of sweet raspberry, mocha and truffle. Finishes with plenty of tannic spine, but the tannins arrive late." It is far too coy to say "somewhere in the middle", yet the seamless fit of fine pieces so integral to good Margaux wines and the sweet cherry fruit that lies at the heart of this attractive bottling have clearly produced a wine that is both rich and even slightly succulent." Its luscious cherry flavors give a soft, round impression in the middle, then it lightens up a little, needing time for the flavors to extend. The fineness of Langoa is there, and should be more apparent in ten years' time." (10/2008)92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Big, ripe, almost exotic, this has developed impressively over the past 18 months. Its tannins are certainly huge, but so is the fruit, warm, rich and enticing. Very powered, it thrusts black currants and acidity right up front." (6/2008)92 points Wine Spectator: "Wonderful aromas of ...Read More »

2005 Haut-Bergey, Pessac-Léognan

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the finest under-the-radar estates in Pessac-Leognan, Haut-Bergey’s 2005 (a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot) offers up aromas of scorched earth, wet stones, burning embers, charcoal, and copious black currant and cherry fruit. The sumptuous bouquet is accompanied by a full-bodied wine displaying dazzling purity, sweet tannin, and a long, opulent finish. This beauty will be drinkable at a relatively early age for a 2005. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025." (4/2008)91 points Wine Spectator: "Aromas of mineral, blackberry and licorice lead to a full body, with lots ...Read More »

2005 Sociando Mallet, Haut-Médoc

92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good full medium red-ruby. Complex nose offers black raspberry, licorice, minerals and a whiff of leather. Brooding, ripe and deep, with terrific volume for Sociando. The black raspberry, licorice and dark chocolate flavors are full and rich but remain this side of exotic. In fact, this boasts superb balance even if it's youthfully backward today. Expands impressively on the back half, finishing with big, broad tannins and an impression of real power. Cellarmaster Faure notes that he's enjoying the '98 and '99 today, but that the 2000 and 2001 are curren ...Read More »

2005 Léoville-Poyferré, St-Julien

95 points Wine & Spirits: "This wine's heady rush of flavor gave one taster goosebumps. She called it sexy. "Formidable." Other technical descriptions included "the shazam," "has zazz," and "unprintable. That's some serious s#¡†." At the en primeur tastings, this appeared to be chunky and superripe. Now it's massive, with dark extract and exotic spice, a sophisticated wine that ends on sweetness, bitter chocolate and dark berry fruit. With all the flash, it will give a lot of pleasure as a young wine, but it has the plump Poyferré terroir drive to sustain that pleasure for years ...Read More »

2005 Duhart-Milon-Rothschild, Pauillac (1.5L)

94 points Robert Parker: "The finest Duhart-Milon ever made? This structured, tannic, dense ruby/purple-tinged Pauillac offers up hints of cassis, licorice, chocolate, and earth. Medium to full-bodied with good purity, strong tannins, and undeniable elegance, it reveals a character not dissimilar from its renowned sibling, Lafite-Rothschild... It is unquestionably outstanding, but to my taste, slightly less opulent than the estate’s ethereal 2003. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030." (04/08) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Dark in color, almost black, with beaut... Read More »

2005 Pavillon Rouge, Margaux

89-92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright ruby-red. Very pure aromas of blackberry, cassis, violet and spicy oak. Very ripe and rich in the mouth, with a much more pliant texture than the grand vin Quite chewy on the back end, finishing with broad, sweet tannins and a touch of warmth. This has alcohol in the 14% range, or a full point higher than Chateau Margaux's 13%." (6/2006)92 points Wine Enthusiast: "All about red fruits, this is a celebration of ripe Merlot and Cabernet. It is touched with wood, but the flavors are of lively acidity, red berries, just showing some bitter chocolate. And to finish, more freshness ...Read More »
