1999 Bodegas Puelles Gran Reserva Rioja Top Pick!
1999 Bodegas Puelles Gran Reserva Rioja

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1999 Gran Reserva has an enticing red cherry, soy and cedar-scented bouquet that is reminiscent of an old Burgundy. The palate is very well-balanced with fine acidity and edgy tannin. There are notes of fresh red cherries and orange rind interlaced by leather on the tart, highly enjoyable, zesty finish. Drink now-2018. (NM)" (8/2012) K&L Notes: Wow--this is spectacular Gran Reserva! Made in a traditional style with earthy red fruit aromas, and in this relatively cooler, damper vintage, a slightly Burgundian profile. The wine features good acidity, minerality, and... 2005 Bodegas Casa Juan Señor de Lesmos Reserva Rioja Top Pick!
2005 Bodegas Casa Juan Señor de Lesmos Reserva Rioja

92 points James Suckling: "This has a beautiful depth of fruit with spice and dark fruits. Hints of parsley and cilantro. Full and super silky with a long and beautiful finish." (5/2013) K&L Notes: Composed of the same grapes in the same percentages as the Crianza, the Reserva is a barrel selection of wines that Angel feels can undergo longer aging in barrel and then in bottle. Aged a total of 27 months in barrels, then into concrete for more than a year, the Reserva also sees bottle aging until Angel deems it ready for release. This wine ramps up the intensity of the Crianza, with more pungen... Read More »

2009 Bodegas Casa Juan Señor de Lesmos Crianza Rioja

There is a wonderful element of whimsy and joy at this tiny, family bodega located in Laguardia. The elephant logo, the on-site African art museum, as well as the name (there is no Señor de Lesmos, as it turns out) all speak to the family's joie de vivre and sense of humor. There is nothing funny about the quality of these wines, though. All estate fruit, hand-harvested, and carefully vinified with native yeasts, this is a hand sewn wine with the purity, texture, and elegance to prove it. Produced from 85% Tempranillo and 15% Mazuelo, the wine shows a ra... Read More »

2010 Bodegas Puelles Crianza Rioja Top Pick!
2010 Bodegas Puelles Crianza Rioja

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2010 Crianza is produced with 100% destemmed Tempranillo grapes fermented in inox and aged for one year in barriques (50% French, 50% American) is a little closed in the nose, seems like a serious wine, with a mix of red and black fruit and the wood well-integrated in the wine. Round in the palate, with clean flavors, supple, balanced, very Rioja. It grows on you as it also improves with air and gets more focused. 30,000 bottles were produced. A great value Crianza to buy by the case! Drink 2014-2018." (8/2012) K&L Notes: A K&L Direct Import! Jesús Puelles is one... Read More »

Based in the Rioja Alta village of Badarán, Martínez Alesanco is a truly original bodega producing tasty, characterful wine for laughably low prices. They are entirely self reliant in grapes, all of which are grown in their home village of Badarán, one of the coldest zones of Rioja Alta. 2009 Viña Eguía Reserva Rioja Top Pick!
2009 Viña Eguía Reserva Rioja

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Vina Eguia Reserva is quite similar to its Crianza sibling from 2010, a little more powerful but not necessarily better, with perhaps a more developed bouquet showing some Mediterranean herbs, dark ripe cherries and black pepper. The palate is crisp, with good acidity and length. (LG)" (12/2013) Wine Spectator: "There's good density to the black cherry, leafy and spicy flavors in this balanced red, remaining lively, even delicate, with racy, citrusy acidity, supple tannins and a floral finish." 2011 Campo Viejo Tempranillo Rioja

Bodegas Campo Viejo was born when two small, historic Rioja estates merged in 1959. The unusual name comes from the block of vineyard next to the original cellar, very old vines that the winemakers called "Old Friend" - Campo Viejo. This wine consists of 100% Tempranillo, aged for four months in oak barrels. While the fruit is red plum and dark cherry, the overall palate impression is balanced and very clearly Rioja.

Savoury, traditional style with toasted nuts and coffee, delicate coconut and ripe, baked plum fruit. A great, classic Rioja. Complex and intriguing." (5/2013) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2008 Reserva just feels very Rioja, with notes of leather, cedar, cigar box and a core of red and black fruit. 2007 Bodegas Puelles Rioja Reserva Top Pick!
2007 Bodegas Puelles Rioja Reserva

Jesús Puelles is one of the most talented vignerons in Rioja. Hailing from a long line of vineyard worker/owners, Puelles knows the terruño in his little slice of land in the Rioja Alta town of Abalos. Nearly all of the grapes for his red wines come from his own 26 hectares, which are generally north facing and located between 300 and 600 meters in altitude, and all within the village of Abalos. This is very rare in a region where sourcing from various villages, and even sub-zones, is more the norm. 2007 was a fresh vintage in Rioja, with marked Atlantic... Read More »

This is an amazing value for aged, quality Gran Reserva Rioja. All estate fruit, hand harvested, and carefully vinified with native yeasts, this is a hand sewn wine with the purity, texture and elegance to prove it. Having spent 38 months in barrel and many more months in bottle, this Gran Reserva smells of ripe red fruit and chewy, dried fruits as well, with a subtle hint of tobacco. 2005 La Rioja Alta "Viña Ardanza" Reserva Rioja

92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep ruby. Sexy, highly perfumed aromas of red fruit preserves, vanilla, mocha and fresh flowers, with a hint of pipe tobacco coming up with air. Sappy and broad on entry, then more taut in the middle, with sweet cherry-vanilla and spicecake flavors given lift by juicy acidity. Closes smooth, spicy and long, with lingering smokiness and fine-grained tannins adding grip. A touch more lively than the excellent 2004 version of this wine and of equal quality, which makes it an outstanding value in old-school Rioja." (1/2014)91 points Wine Enthusiast: "Rusty and mature looking, this is woodsy, dry and rooty on the nose, with whiffs of tree bark and tobacco running alongside cherry and berry notes. The palate is velvety, really easy to drink, with clean flavors and good persistence. I liked it better than the 2011. It's superb for its price tag! A nice everyday wine. What is remarkable is that they produce 2.4 million bottles of this wine, so it should be readily available. The light to medium-bodied palate shows fully resolved tannins, great acidity and pure, pungent flavors that linger in the mouth forever and that can only be Rioja. These grapes are now in the Lindes range of wines, but in the past they were blended with the estate grapes. The cool Remelluri vineyards behave very well in warmer years. It has an unashamedly opulent bouquet of primal, ripe, boysenberry, mulberry, dark chocolate and crushed violets that blossom with aeration. It is very good value. Drink 2014-2017. (LG)" (12/2013) Wine Enthusiast: "Ripe, welcoming berry, smoke and floral aromas lead the bouquet of this modern Rioja. It’s produced from a blend of 89% Tempranillo and 11% Mazuelo (aka Carinena), a difficult grape that is in high esteem at the winery as they consider it adds acidity and aging potential to the blend and has been selected specifically to make part of the flagship wine’s blend. Miguel Merino makes, as he likes to put it, an "updated classic" style of Rioja, all from his own 2 hectares of vines and several hectares of vineyards owned by a close friend. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine, structured tannins that, even at this premature juncture, are obvious. A great Rioja from the very good 2007 harvest, Dinastia Vivanco is an example of a winery making carefully crafted Rioja which combines the richer, more succulent fruit of a modernly styled wine, with the experience and know-how of an estate that has been at it for quite some time. Based in the Rioja Alta town of Briones, Miguel Merino makes, as he likes to put it, an "updated classic" style of Rioja, all from his own 2 hectares of vines and several hectares of vineyards owned by a close friend. All the fruit is from sloped vineyards (Mig... Read More »

2009 Señorío de P. Peciña Crianza Rioja

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Senorio de P. Pecina Crianza feels much older and has the profile of old-time traditional Rioja, with notes of tobacco, leather, camphor, raw meat, incense and a core of macerated cherries. The medium-bodied palate shows great acidity (especially for a warm vintage), clean flavors and enough persistence. Highly recommended for fans of old-time Rioja at a great price. (LG)" (12/2013) K&L Notes: Along with the likes of Lopez de Heredia, La Rioja Alta, and some others, Señorío de P. Peciña is one of the standard bearers for traditionally styled Rioja. With a ve... 2003 Señorío de P. Peciña Gran Reserva Rioja

Along with the likes of Lopez de Heredia, La Rioja Alta, and some others, Hermanos Peciña is one of the standard bearers for traditionally styled Rioja. This 2003 Gran Reserva is delicious now, and has many years of positive evolution ahead of it. The folks at Peciña are steadfast in maintaining traditional Rioja winemaking practices, pointing out that along with La Rioja Alta, Lopez de Heredia, and a few others, they are the only bodega who continues to carefully age and rack all their wines by hand. That fact combined with their excellent quality viney... Read More »

2011 'B' de Basilio Blanco Rioja

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2011 B de Basilio white is mostly Garnacha Blanca with some Viura from the Rioja Alavesa region. The bunches are pressed and the must fermented in oak barrels where they aged in contact with their lees for nine months. It’s very young and ungiving, it's quite closed, with a balsamic and yeasty character with some hay and straw notes. The palate is still marked by the oak and reveals some smoky yellow plum flavors with good acidity, clean and persistent. It’s a big wine, which manages to keep the freshness. Drink 2014-2018. 2001 Muga "Torre Muga" Rioja
Bid on this 12-bottle lot of 2001 Muga "Torre Muga" Rioja (97RP, 95ST, 93W&S, 90WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2001 Torre Muga is an undeniably great wine. Still a deep purple color, on the palate it is densely packed, rich, and structured for the long haul. Give it another 8-10 years of cellaring and drink it through 2041. (JM)" (06/2010)

2013 Viña Ilusión "Prana" Rioja

Another delicious cosecha wine from the folks at Viña Ilusion, this particular cuvee has no added sulphur and represents as tasty and authentic an expression of Tempranillo based grapes as one is likely to find these days in Rioja! Highly recomended. (Joe Manekin, K&L Spanish wine buyer)

2008 Benjamin Romeo "La Vina de Andres" Rioja (Elsewhere $125+)

94 points Antonio Galloni: "Vivid ruby. Highly complex, mineral-driven bouquet of raspberry, candied cherry, rose and Asian spices. Very fresh, palate-staining red berry flavors are supported by a vibrant underpinning of tangy minerals and pick up smokiness and florality with air. Juicy, focused and extremely pure, finishing with outstanding cut and spicy persistence. This wine's exotic character makes it very easy to drink right now but I'd give it at least another five years of bottle age. (Josh Raynolds)" (11/2011)
