2013 Columna Albariño Rias Baixas

Produced in the slightly warmer Rias Baixas sub-zone of O Rosal, Columna's 2013 is a lovely balance between granite-driven, subtly smoky minerality, salinity and fairly rich yellow stone fruit. This would be wonderful to enjoy before a meal or alongside seafood and shellfish. Once again, as it was last vintage, the Columna shows lots of character and value for the price.

2013 Fefiñanes Albariño Rias Baixas

This is a delicious Albariño, always one of our top two or three for someone looking for a classic expression of this white wine. A wonderfully mineral nose leads to bright, succulent, yellow stone fruit flavors with more than a wisp of salinity adding freshness and making it pretty difficult to not gulp this one down quickly. Palacio de Fefiñanes is the oldest known brand of Albariño and the first to have bottled their wine. Based in the "birthplace of Albariño," the seaside town of Cambados, the winery purchases fruit from 60 growers, many of whom own... Read More »

2013 Morgadío Albariño Rias Baixas

Based in the village of Albeos, in the Condado do Tea, sub-zone, Morgadío has produced a lovely and very convincing Albariño in 2013. It shows waxy yellow and orange fruit flavors, star fruit and loquat in particular. The wine is fresh, well balanced between ripe fruit and acidity, and oh so drinkable! This is a unique expression of Albariño from the portion of the D.O. that lies a bit further inland from the coast and borders on the Ribeiro D.O. 2013 Flor de Verano Albariño Rias Baixas

Carlos Castro Serrantes and his daughter team up to produce this really lovely expression of Albariño in the village of Freixo. They own 7 hecatres of vines, all trained up high in pergola as is the tradition in this area. All citric and stonefruit, with bracing acidity that make this a perfect aperitivo or accompaniment to fresh crab, oysters, or any shellfish you want to throw its way! 2013 Do Ferreiro Albariño Rias Baixas

Do Ferreiro is a benchmark Albariño. Every year, it delivers the goods, showing a degree of aromatic complexity, nervy minerality, and pure intensity of flavor that always makes it stand out from the rest. Delicious upon release, it is also one of the few Albariños to improve in bottle for up to a decade (maybe longer?) beyond the vintage year. There is bright fruit intermingling with the classic Do Ferreiro salty/smoky mineral bite. Enjoy this wine on its own or with all types of seafood. This would even be terrific with a hearty bean soup. (Joe Manekin... Read More »

2013 Neboa Albariño Rias Baixas

90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright straw. Musky, mineral-accented aromas of pear and nectarine, with a floral nuance gaining power with air. Taut and nervy on entry, then fleshier in the middle, offering juicy orchard and citrus fruit flavors and a hint of bitter quinine. Closes on a spicy note, with lively mineral cut and an echo of white flowers." (9/2014) K&L Notes: Produced by a 25-grower cooperative located in the Condado do Tea sub-zone of Rias Baixas, this is crisp, citrus and yellow fruited Albariño from a challenging, but ultimately rewarding, cooler and damper vintage. The results are... Read More »

2013 Do Ferreiro "Cepas Vellas" Albariño Rias Baixas

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A true icon of Rías Baixas, the 2013 Albariño Do Ferreiro Cepas Vellas is pure Albariño from probably the oldest vineyards in the zone, in Spain and in the whole world, as they might be close to being 200 years old! The vines look more like trees because they are trained in the pergola style as is the norm in the region. As all his wines were fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and aged in contact with the lees for 11 months before being bottled. This wine is produced from a plot of extremely old vines that are planted next to his house a ...Read More »

2012 Nanclares Albariño Rias Baixas

This is serious Albariño. Alberto Nanclares, one of the the very few people we know who who makes first rate Albariño from Rias Baixas and is not from the area, is a perfectionist. All vineyard work on his scarce acreage scattered amongst Meaño, O Castrelo, and a few other villages, is done by him. Same goes for the cellar work. This bottling features some terrific old vine Meaño fruit. It has a rather soft and ripely textured 2012 character on the nose, which leads to a palate of juicy apricots, with waves of fresh acidity and very good intensity - Albar... Read More »

2013 Carballal "Sete Cepas" Albariño Rias Baixas

Produced from younger estate grapes from Carballal's 15 hectares of vineyards, as well as purchased fruit, this Albariño is always hand harvested from carefully grown grapes, organic whenever possible, with treatments used only when absolutely necessary. Very refreshing, with nice bracing acidity, there are hints of exotic fruits as well as stone fruits. A wine to sip with warm weather fare as well as the absolute perfect match with fish and shellfish, the mainstay of coastal Galician cuisine. (Joe Manekin, K&L Spanish Wine Buyer)
