1999 Bodegas Puelles Gran Reserva Rioja Top Pick!
1999 Bodegas Puelles Gran Reserva Rioja

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1999 Gran Reserva has an enticing red cherry, soy and cedar-scented bouquet that is reminiscent of an old Burgundy. The palate is very well-balanced with fine acidity and edgy tannin. There are notes of fresh red cherries and orange rind interlaced by leather on the tart, highly enjoyable, zesty finish. Drink now-2018. (NM)" (8/2012) K&L Notes: Wow--this is spectacular Gran Reserva! Made in a traditional style with earthy red fruit aromas, and in this relatively cooler, damper vintage, a slightly Burgundian profile. The wine features good acidity, minerality, and... 2012 Bodegas Castano "Solanera Vinas Viejas" Yecla

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Even more remarkable is the 2012 Solanera Vinas Viejas, a blend of 70% Mourvedre, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Grenache aged 10 months in a combination of French and American oak. A custom cuvee that is only available through importer Eric Solomon, this amazing red wine displays notes of lead pencil shavings, acacia flowers, black raspberries, blueberries and black currants. This full-bodied, intense 2012 tastes like it should cost three to five times as much. Full-bodied, stunningly pure and textured, it should last for 4-5 years, possibly longer. T ...Read More »

2013 Castillo de Monseran Garnacha Cariñena

In the region of Cariñena, the Garnacha grape variety seems to find a lovely expression, one which is less high octane and lighter on its feet than in some of the neighboring regions. And, as ever, this is a terrific red wine bargain for anyone looking for an inexpensive house red or wine for any party, wedding, or other event.

2005 Bodegas Casa Juan Señor de Lesmos Reserva Rioja Top Pick!
2005 Bodegas Casa Juan Señor de Lesmos Reserva Rioja

92 points James Suckling: "This has a beautiful depth of fruit with spice and dark fruits. Hints of parsley and cilantro. Full and super silky with a long and beautiful finish." (5/2013) K&L Notes: Composed of the same grapes in the same percentages as the Crianza, the Reserva is a barrel selection of wines that Angel feels can undergo longer aging in barrel and then in bottle. Aged a total of 27 months in barrels, then into concrete for more than a year, the Reserva also sees bottle aging until Angel deems it ready for release. This wine ramps up the intensity of the Crianza, with more pungen... Read More »

2009 Bodegas Casa Juan Señor de Lesmos Crianza Rioja

There is a wonderful element of whimsy and joy at this tiny, family bodega located in Laguardia. The elephant logo, the on-site African art museum, as well as the name (there is no Señor de Lesmos, as it turns out) all speak to the family's joie de vivre and sense of humor. There is nothing funny about the quality of these wines, though. All estate fruit, hand-harvested, and carefully vinified with native yeasts, this is a hand sewn wine with the purity, texture, and elegance to prove it. Produced from 85% Tempranillo and 15% Mazuelo, the wine shows a ra... Read More »

2012 Bodegas Castaño "Hécula" Monastrell Yecla Top Pick!
2012 Bodegas Castaño "Hécula" Monastrell Yecla

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The basic offering from proprietor Ramon Castano Santa, who owns a whopping 1,000 acres in Yecla, is the 2012 Hecula, which is sourced from a non-irrigated, single vineyard planted with 100% Monastrell. Aged in both tank and French oak, it comes from 60-80-year-old vines planted in limestone soils at a relatively high elevation of over 1,600 feet. Its opaque purple color is followed by copious aromas of blueberries, black raspberries, camphor, licorice, white flowers and a chalky limestone/dusty character. 2010 Bodegas Puelles Crianza Rioja

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2010 Crianza is produced with 100% destemmed Tempranillo grapes fermented in inox and aged for one year in barriques (50% French, 50% American) is a little closed in the nose, seems like a serious wine, with a mix of red and black fruit and the wood well-integrated in the wine. Round in the palate, with clean flavors, supple, balanced, very Rioja. It grows on you as it also improves with air and gets more focused. 30,000 bottles were produced. A great value Crianza to buy by the case! Drink 2014-2018." (8/2012) K&L Notes: A K&L Direct Import! Jesús Puelles is one... Read More »

An amazing value, this wine boasts a dense blue/purple color as well as a sumptuous nose of blueberries, blackberries, scorched earth, licorice and forest floor. Stunningly pure and medium to full-bodied with oodles of fruit, this is a remarkable value to drink until the cows come home. Consume it over the next 2-3 years. 2010 Mercedes Eguren Cabernet Sauvignon Vino de la Tierra de Castilla

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Inky purple. Spicy cherry and dark berry aromas are deepened by notes of bitter chocolate, vanilla and espresso. Peppery, sharply focused cherry and blackberry flavors show a slight bitterness but possess good energy. Finishes with a strong cherry skin quality and good length." (9/2012) K&L Notes: The Eguren family is a well-known name in Spain, having made successful reds at everything from the $5 level on up to collectible Riojas. 2009 Viña Eguía Reserva Rioja Top Pick!
2009 Viña Eguía Reserva Rioja

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Vina Eguia Reserva is quite similar to its Crianza sibling from 2010, a little more powerful but not necessarily better, with perhaps a more developed bouquet showing some Mediterranean herbs, dark ripe cherries and black pepper. The palate is crisp, with good acidity and length. (LG)" (12/2013) Wine Spectator: "There's good density to the black cherry, leafy and spicy flavors in this balanced red, remaining lively, even delicate, with racy, citrusy acidity, supple tannins and a floral finish." 2011 Campo Viejo Tempranillo Rioja

Bodegas Campo Viejo was born when two small, historic Rioja estates merged in 1959. The unusual name comes from the block of vineyard next to the original cellar, very old vines that the winemakers called "Old Friend" - Campo Viejo. This wine consists of 100% Tempranillo, aged for four months in oak barrels. While the fruit is red plum and dark cherry, the overall palate impression is balanced and very clearly Rioja.

This full-bodied beauty boasts a deep ruby color as well as loads of strawberry and black cherry fruit, hints of lavender and crushed rocks, sweet tannin, and a broad, savory mouthfeel. It, too, should be consumed over the next 3-4 years. This has long been a popular source for value-priced wines. Savoury, traditional style with toasted nuts and coffee, delicate coconut and ripe, baked plum fruit. A great, classic Rioja. Complex and intriguing." (5/2013) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2008 Reserva just feels very Rioja, with notes of leather, cedar, cigar box and a core of red and black fruit. 2013 Pedro Martinez Alesanco Tempranillo Rioja

Based in the Rioja Alta village of Badarán, Martínez Alesanco is a truly original bodega producing tasty, characterful wine for laughably low prices. They are entirely self reliant in grapes, all of which are grown in their home village of Badarán, one of the coldest zones of Rioja Alta. The vineyards are closer to the Sierra de la Demanda mountains, a range whose elevation and visible snow covered peaks are even more dramatic than the Sierra Cantabria range to the north. 2007 Bodegas Puelles Rioja Reserva Top Pick!
2007 Bodegas Puelles Rioja Reserva

Jesús Puelles is one of the most talented vignerons in Rioja. Hailing from a long line of vineyard worker/owners, Puelles knows the terruño in his little slice of land in the Rioja Alta town of Abalos. Nearly all of the grapes for his red wines come from his own 26 hectares, which are generally north facing and located between 300 and 600 meters in altitude, and all within the village of Abalos. This is very rare in a region where sourcing from various villages, and even sub-zones, is more the norm. 2007 was a fresh vintage in Rioja, with marked Atlantic... Read More »

The Grenache comes from 70-year-old vines, and the Syrah from 30-year-old vines. It is difficult to find a better value than this incredibly rich effort. The result is an outstanding red wine displaying a dense ruby/plum/purple color, lots of kirsch liqueur intermixed with a notion of roasted herbs, medium to full body, attractive, savory, fleshy flavors and a long finish. Made from relatively old vines, the 2012 Pruno is a sexy, opulent, voluptuously textured effort that spent 12 months in two-year-old French oak barrels. Located in the town of Roa, which is part of the Burgos district, Lambuena is a producer of D.O. Ribera del Duero wines and is one of our newest Spanish direct imports. Ideally situated in the central growing region of the Ribera del Duero, in an area known for the very high quality of its chalky clay soils and its extreme continental climate, Lambuena makes big, generously fruited, yet structured and ultimately classic Ribera del Duero wines (these days, this is very difficult to find in this D.O.) In the southeast of Spain sandwiched between Jumilla and Alicante, wines from Yecla have most prolifically come from what happens to be the largest co-op in Spain. However the Castaño family stands as the most important and ambitious privately owned winery in the D.O., and they have gone to great lengths to push the quality from the often coarse wines for which this region was previously known. Fix your attention instead to the generosity of its fruit, voluptuous and smooth. This is richly layered in flavors (some closer to meat than fruit), with a density that traps and wraps in a lovely way. All in all, a complex wine and an astonishing value. Try this with your favorite recipe for braised or stewed lamb. (Joe Manekin, K&L Spanish & Portuguese wine buyer)

2006 Bodegas Olarra "Cerro Añon" Gran Reserva Rioja

91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "(mostly tempranillo, with garnacha, mazuelo and graciano): Ruby-red. Red berry and dried cherry aromas overlaid by a coating of vanillin oak. Sappy and sweet, offering cherry-vanilla and mocha flavors lifted by gentle acidity. Smooth, open-knit and ready to drink, finishing with repeating vanilla and cherry notes and very good persistence. My score will look high to the oak-averse, but fans of old-school Rioja Gran Reservas should dig it." (10/2013) K&L Notes: Based in Logroño, Bodegas Olarra is not a new bodega on the block, having produced wines for over 40 ye... Read More »

2012 Guímaro Ribeira Sacra

Jancis Robinson: "Deep cherry red. Some smoky reduction, lively, juicy and not ruined by oak, as some Bierzo can be. Wonderfully fresh, quite tight, a bit chewy but full of energy and quite persistent if not especially intense. (JH)" (4/2014) K&L Notes: Produced in the Amandi sub-zone of Ribeira Sacra, famous for its steeply sloped vineyards and magnificent views of the Sil River, Guimaro's entry level wine is a benchmark for tank raised Mencía: all fresh red fruits, with a linear quality on the palate, and firm tannins that stay contained on the front portion of the tongue. It remind... Read More »

2008 Bodegas Olarra "Cerro Añon" Reserva Rioja

90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep ruby. Ripe cherry, dark berries and vanilla on the perfumed nose. Smooth and accessible, offering sweet cherry-vanilla and coconut flavors and a hint of mocha. Fine-grained tannins come on late, adding shape to the long, smooth, appealingly sweet finish. Shows little of the tangy edge that I associate with so many wines from this vintage." (9/2013) K&L Notes: Based in Logroño, Bodegas Olarra is not a new bodega on the block, having produced wines for over 40 years now. In fact, we have been luck enough to try several much older vintages of these wines, both ... Read More »

2010 Bodega Eguren Tempranillo Vino de la Tierra de Castilla

Here is another excellent value from the Egurens. While we have been working consistently with their under $10 Cab, this Tempranillo comes from neighboring vines and it is also similarly delicious, with loads of bright dark cherry and red fruit flavors. Juicy, soft fruit make this a gulpable wine. Given the Eguren family's extensive acreage of mature vineyards and their experience, it is no surprise that their wines consistently over deliver year after year. Awesome bargain red and house wine candidate.

2009 Bodegas Sierra Salinas "Puerto Salinas" Alicante

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "There are 5,000 cases of this remarkable value, another stunning example of the astonishing palate of Eric Solomon and his ability to ferret out exceptional wines at such ridiculously low prices that most consumers will never guess how good they are based on the price alone. Composed of 66% Monastrell, 19% Garnacha and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon aged for one year in both new and 2-year-old French oak, it displays an inky/purple color along with notes of road tar, melted asphalt, blackberry liqueur, camphor, graphite and forest floor. The wine is complex, ful ...Read More »

2009 Bodegas Casa Juan Señor de Lesmos Crianza Rioja (1.5L)

Lesmos is back, and now in magnums, the ideal size for parties and for extended aging in your cellar! All estate fruit, hand harvested, and carefully vinified with native yeasts, this is a hand sewn wine with the purity, texture and elegance to prove it. Produced from 85% Tempranillo and 15% Mazuelo, the wine shows a rather Burgundian nose of cherries and plums, opening to reveal a hint of sandalwood that leads to a wonderful palate that opens with tangy cherry flavors that are persistent and presented on an elegantly textured frame. Terrific acidity an... Read More »
