2005 Heitz Cellar "Trailside" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

90 points Wine Spectator: "This fine new release, with some bottle age, shows signs of subtle maturity. Aromas of mocha, cedar, dried currant and spice box follow through to a full body, This is well-built, with fine balance and good length. Drink now through 2019. 2,260 cases made. (Web-2011)" K&L Notes: In the early 1980s, the Heitz Family acquired a marvelous Rutherford vineyard bordered on one side by the Silverado Trail and nudged on the other by the Conn Creek. Thus the Trailside Vineyard was born. Aged for three-and-a-half years in a combination of American and French Limousin oak, the ... Read More »

2005 Heitz Cellar "Martha's Vineyard" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

93 points Wine Spectator: "Minty bay leaf aromas are pure, with a spicy edge, leading to firm dark berry, mocha, mineral and sage flavors that are tight and well-structured, with firm, ripe tannins that provide an excellent backbone. Much too young now, however tempting. Should only get much better. Best from 2013 through 2022." (11/2011) K&L Notes: Martha's Vineyards has become one of the most well known Cabernets around the world for its unique mintiness, its rich layers of complexity and its remarkable overall balance. 2005 Chateau Montelena "Estate" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good deep ruby-red. Complex aromas of currant, licorice, graphite, bitter chocolate, smoked meat, tobacco and brown spices. Began juicy, penetrating and quite youthfully unevolved, but aeration brought a suppler, rounder texture and more generosity to this impressively structured wine. Complicating notes of bitter cherry, menthol and minerals. This will require a good eight to ten years of aging but the substantial tannins are sweet and lush. Very long, pure and powerful on the finish." (6/2008)91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The flagship wine, the 2005 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvig ...Read More »

2005 Rubicon Estate "Rubicon" Rutherford Bordeaux Blend
Bid on this bottle of 2005 Rubicon Estate "Rubicon" Rutherford Bordeaux Blend (96WE, 95CG, 95RP, 93WS, 92W&S). Wine Enthusiast: "**Top 100 Cellar Selections of 2009** Made from 98% Cabernet Sauvignon, with no Merlot or Cabernet Franc for the first time, the ’05 Rubicon tastes bigger and more impenetrable than any previous vintage. It’s thick and heavy at this time, with furry tannins and undeniably ripe flavors of blackberries, black currants, cherries, violets, chocolate and cedar, and a tang of melted minerals. Desperately needs time in the cellar. Nowhere near ready for at least four years, and that may be conservative.Tasted three times, and better each time, a seriously good sign, and potentially a perfect wine."

Bid on this bottle of 2005 Shafer "Hillside Select" Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon (99RP, (94-97ST), 94JS, 94W&S, 93CG, 92WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Like many 2005s (I’ll be doing a retrospective of this vintage in several months and look forward to it), this was a vintage that seemed to start off relatively uneventfully and was rather slow to reveal its true merit early in life. Like a thoroughbred race horse, it just seemed to get stronger and stronger in barrel, and now that the wines have been in bottle, they continue to strut their stuff. Of course, 2004 got much more publicity because of the heat, and after 2001 and 2002, there weren’t a lot of superlatives left to give, but 2005 has turned out to be a great vintage and the 2005 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select is certainly one of the superstars of the vintage." 2005 Kongsgaard Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The debut vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2005, has turned out beautifully. Made from fruit grown in David Abreu’s vineyards, this Cabernet Sauvignon (which includes tiny amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) comes from three distinct vineyards, one above Dalla Valle, and two on the back streets of St. Helena. A deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by notes of espresso roast, fudge, forest floor, creme de cassis, and smoked meats. The wine is layered, full-bodied, and rich. 2005 Dominus Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Dominus continues to strut its stuff, tasting like a Napa hybrid blend of a St.-Emilion and Pomerol. Its dark ruby/purple-tinged color is followed by notions of cedarwood, spice box, roasted herbs, sweet black cherry and cassis fruit, licorice, and truffles. Full-bodied with excellent fruit intensity, complex aromatics, supple tannins, and a long finish, this 7,000-case blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot should drink well for two decades or more. 95+ points. 2005 Beringer "Private Reserve" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "...The 2005 is one of my all-time favorite Beringer Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserves... Still a baby in terms of development, it is reminiscent of a first or second-growth Pauillac. Celestial notes of black currants, camphor, graphite, cocoa, white chocolate and spice box are all present in this full-bodied, extravagantly rich, multidimensional Cabernet. Although still primary, it is very classic with terrific purity, texture and length. It will need another decade to hit full maturity, but should easily last 15-20 years thereafter. 2005 Anderson's Conn Valley "Reserve" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is showing even better than it did last year, which is not unusual when tasting the wines of Todd Anderson and Mac Sawyer. Dense ruby/purple to the rim, with the classic Pauillac-like nose of creme de cassis, cedar wood, a hint of tobacco leaf, and very subtle smoke, the wine displays charcoal and roasted herbs, full-bodied power, wonderfully sweet tannins, and a long, long finish. This is a 20- to 25-year wine that should just get better and better as it ages, but it is accessible enough to drink now." (12/2008)

2005 Opus One Napa Valley Proprietary Red

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The opaque purple-hued 2005 exhibits an extraordinary nose of violets, creme de cassis, charcoal, and spring flowers. Gorgeously pure, opulently full-bodied, with sweet tannins, superb concentration, and a low acid, ripe, tannic finish, it tastes like a top-notch vintage of ripe Bordeaux, but made in California. It can be drunk now and over the next 20-25 years. Bravo! (RP)" (12/2008)92 points James Suckling: "Sage, bay leaf, mint, plum, and forest floor on the nose. 2005 Silver Oak Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good deep red-ruby. Musky aromas of cassis, licorice, game, tobacco leaf and subtle brown spices. Velvety-sweet and deep, with hints of tobacco leaf, mint and herbs giving definition to the middle palate. Nicely bright but youthfully tight wine, finishing with broad tannins. Carrying a moderate 13.5% alcohol. Still tight, but then this won't be released until next winter. Incidentally, following Silver Oak's purchase of a vineyard in Soda Canyon in 1999, this wine now relies less on contract fruit." (5/2009) Wine Spectator: "Supple and graceful, with excellent balance, offering layers of plum, black cherry, blackberry and savory herbal scents. Gains complexity and nuance on the finish, where the flavors push on. Drink now through 2013." 2005 Pahlmeyer Napa Valley Proprietary Red

This wine has fleshed out beautifully. The final blend (84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec) has a deep purple color, a beautifully sweet nose of blackberries and cassis intermixed with some meatiness, smoke, and a touch of pain grille as well as notes of espresso and licorice. Its extraordinary aromas of incense, cedar wood, creme de cassis, kirsch, spice box, and gamey smokiness as well as forest floor make for one of the most complex wines I smelled over the two weeks I spent in Napa. 2005 John Anthony Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

One star from the Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine: "This wine's bias to sweet cherries in the nose brings good Merlot to mind, and its lithe and supple feel does the same. A streak of last-minute structural tannin clearly tags the wine as Cabernet, but that tannin is never so pushy as to endanger the expression of fruit, and it instead provides a nice bit of grip and ensures a few years of positive growth." (August 2008) In the late 1800s Jean Marie Truchard packed his bags and left his native France, settling in Cat Springs, Texas. There he bough... Read More »

This wine needs 3-4 years of bottle age, and should last 25-30 years." (12/2007)92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good deep, saturated ruby. It boasts a deep ruby/purple color along with a striking bouquet of blue and black fruits intermingled with acacia flowers, lead pencil shavings, and licorice, excellent fruit, medium to full body, substantial but sweet tannins, and compelling harmony among its acidity, alcohol, tannin, and extract. Aged 20 months in primarily new French oak, its inky/blue/purple color is followed by an extraordinary bouquet of graphite, cedar wood, creme de cassis, spice box, and incense. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Levy and McClellan's 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon, which spent 26 months in new oak (mostly Taransaud), is developing at an incredibly slow rate. Its opaque ruby/purple color is accompanied by beautiful aromas of roasted coffee, melted chocolate, creme de cassis, burning embers, camphor, and a hint of cedar. On the palate, the wine combines considerable substance, power, and extract with a sense of harmony as well as elegance. Black currant, blackberry, and gamy, meaty notes are also present in this full-bodied effort with an incredibly long finish. The wine is just beginning to shed some tannin and become accessible. The wine is dark ruby/purple-tinged with a floral, restrained nose of sweet cherries and soil and undertones of underbrush and barrique. Robert Sinskey's POV is a Bordeaux-style blend from Los Carneros, on the southerly reach of Napa Valley, by the San Pablo portion of the San Francisco Bay--better known for Pinot Noir.
