2012 Spellbound California Petite Sirah

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The outstanding 2012 Petite Sirah is a 21,500-case cuvée of 100% Petite Sirah that was aged in a combination of 60% French oak and 40% stainless steel. While surprisingly soft and civilized for a Petite Sirah, it does not lack for flavor authority or density. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by notes of blueberries, blackberries, incense and camphor. Meaty, rich and spicy with a hint of road tar, the sweetness of the tannins and the lushness and opulence of the wine are amazing. This tastes like a $30-$40 Petite Sirah, but it's available at less th ...Read More »

2013 Jaffurs "Thompson Vineyard" Santa Barbara County Petite Sirah

93-95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Petite Sirah looks to be another killer vintage of this cuvee. First made in 2003, this 2013 offers an inky purple color to go with deep, decadent dark fruits, full-bodied richness and depth, and plenty of fine tannin. It’s a beauty to drink over the coming decade or so. Making their wine in the town of Santa Barbara, Craig Jaffurs and David Yates continue to make a bevy of outstanding wines, all of which remain reasonably priced. Both their 2011s and 2012s are made in a fresher, lighter-weight style that highlights purity and finesse over ric ...Read More »

2013 Vasco Urbano Wine Co. "Brunswick" Livermore Valley Petite Sirah

From the winery: "Rich and dense, the 2013 Brunswick Petite Sirah is a beautiful expression of a world class vineyard. Aromatics of fresh black cherries, blueberry cobbler, and dark chocolate, the wine hits the palate with a rush of accompanying flavors. The wine crosses the mid palate and fills the mouth with balanced acid and tannins to match the wines' density. Enjoy with grilled anything, or on a cool autumn evening on the patio. Pack a toothbrush!"

2010 Carver Sutro "Palisade Vineyard" Napa Valley Petite Sirah

94 points Antonio Galloni: "The 2010 Petite Sirah Palisades Vineyard is brilliant. Black cherries, licorice and menthol jump from the glass in this perfumed, delineated wine. The 2010 is fresh, vibrant and totally beautiful. Here, too, the aromas and flavors are precise but also quite primary. The balance of fruit and the typically hard Petite Sirah tannins is once again exceptional. Hints of tar, game and licorice start to make an appearance on the finish. At press time, Denis Sutro hadn't decided if he would bottle his 2011 Petite Sirah. I did have a chance to re-visit the 2009 ...Read More »

2003 Turley "Hayne Vineyard" Napa Valley Petite Syrah

93-95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2003 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard displays the telltale squid ink-like color with some purple hues, and a stupendous nose of pure, black fruits intermixed with minerals, licorice, and incense. Full-bodied, with massively extracted flavors but incredibly well-balanced and vibrant, this wine needs 5-10 years of bottle-age and should age effortlessly for a quarter of a century. (Also tasted in June 2005)" (2/2005)91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Saturated ruby. Exotic aromas of black cherry, candied dark berries and licorice. 2007 Switchback Ridge "Peterson Family Vineyard" Napa Valley Petite Sirah
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2007 Switchback Ridge "Peterson Family Vineyard" Napa Valley Petite Sirah (95RP, 92WS, 91ST). 95+ points Robert Parker: "The monster 2007 Petite Sirah Peterson Family Vineyard is a massively concentrated, huge, tannic wine that needs a good 7-8 years of cellaring and should keep 20 years. It will be another legend for Petite Sirah..." (12/09) 92 points Wine Spectator: "Extremely dense, with a chunky mouthful of black cherry, blackberry and dried fig flavors that are accented with toasted nut, pepper and dark chocolate details. Wrapped up in velvety, thick tannins, full of intensity and detail." (2011) 91 points Stephen Tanzer: "Opaque ruby-blue color. Brooding aromas of black fruits and licorice. Dense, powerful and sweet; a black hole of a wine, with powerful tannins spreading out to saturate the entire palate. This serious, broad, highly concentrated petite sirah is a bit chunkier than the cabernet and will require a lot of patience." (05/10)

2009 Retro Cellars Howell Mountain Petite Sirah

92 points Antonio Galloni: "Retro's 2009 Petite Sirah Howell Mountain has come together beautifully over the last few months. Some of the early wildness that was present six months ago has subsided and been replaced by silky tannins for Petite." (11/2013) K&L Notes: Retro produces Petite Sirah, that's it, and gets it right year after year, to judge from the scores in the ninety-point range that the vintages regularly receive. The 2009 Howell Mountain consists of 70% Petite Sirah from Park Muscatine Vineyard (old vine) and 30% Petite Sirah from Los Abuelos Vineyard, both on Howell Mountain. Grap... Read More »

2011 T-Vine Napa Valley Petite Sirah

In the northern Napa Valley area of Calistoga, T-Vine Cellars sources fruit from old vineyards and longtime growers -- only growers whose names end in a vowel, they joke. For this Petite Sirah, T-Vine sourced from three vineyards: the legendary Nichelini family's vineyards of Chiles Valley, Calistoga's Fredianis, and Rudy Mancini. "You’ll need to break out the white strips after a glass of this wine," according to the winery. The 2004 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard possesses the purest fruit, density, and intensity. This is a prodigious wine that should be purchased only by those with cold cellars and good DNA for longevity as it will all age for 40-50 years" (12/2005)93 points Wine Spectator: "Dark, rich, dense and loamy. A rich wine from a vineyard adjacent to the library in St. Helena, it should be at its finest between 2008-2025." (2/2005)90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Saturated ruby. 2009 Madrigal Napa Valley Petite Sirah

Chris Madrigal is the proprietor and grandson of the founder of Madrigal Family Winery, and their winemaker is Ed Sbragia. From the winery: "The nose is indicative of a powerful red wine. An initial impression of game, spice and slight reduction, gives way to a core of prevailing blueberry / blackberry fruit aromas. In the mouth the Petite Sirah shows as a compelling red wine in its youth. The initial sensation is more textural with tannin and astringency showing first, but quickly balanced out by an intense core of rich black fruit. The finish is persis... Read More »

2008 Carlisle Yorkville Highlands Petite Sirah

90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Inky purple. Blackberry, blueberry, licorice and smoky herbs on the nose. Juicy, sweet and penetrating, with good depth to its dark fruit flavors and a touch of licorice coming up with air. Broad and weighty but also fine and detailed. Hints at serious ripeness, but also possesses good energy. This is a surprisingly lithe rendition of this variety, which leaves me cold more often than not. These grapes were harvested very late, on October 22, according to Officer." (6/2010)

Smoke, melted road tar, graphite and licorice meld into pungent black olives, wild cherries and white flowers in a wine that is constantly changing in the glass. Savory, mineral and utterly beguiling, the 2013 Rattlesnake Ridge is simply gorgeous today. There is so much going on in the glass. 2004 Robert Foley Napa Valley Petite Sirah

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2004 Petite Sirah is one of the most compelling examples of this varietal that I have ever tasted from California. As longtime readers know, I believe this is the most underrated varietal in California, but it’s not exactly a fun wine to drink young. After 10-15 years of age, it often reveals more character than many more expensive reds. Bob Foley has fashioned a true blockbuster that should age for three decades, but should be accessible when young given its abundant extraction and richness. The softness of the tannins and the wine’s silky, voluptuo ...Read More »

Densely packed, sweet and chewy, with terrific depth of flavor; the note of bloody rare steak carries through in the mouth. This outsized wine finishes with big, chewy, youthfully tough tannins that need aging. As young as this is, it's easier to taste today than the merlot as there's considerably more material here." 2012 Le P'tit Paysan Monterey County Petite Sirah

The San Antonio Valley is in remote southwestern Monterey County, on the leeward side of the Ventana Range. We pick Petite Sirah from two blocks in the Y-Ranch section of the Pierce Vineyard. Block 1 is a west facing rocky hillside littered with chunks of white limestone, which at times are as large as two fists. Block 3 is a southeast facing slope where decomposed granite dominates the soils. Picked at atypically low sugars for the variety. Fermented in small lots with some stem inclusion and some native yeasts. Aged on lees in less than 10% new oak. Fr... Read More »

Connoisseurs Guide: "A curious and unconventional mix of chocolate, cherries, citrus, and chalk steers this one well off the expected path, and ample acidity, obvious heat and nominal tannin converge to effectively push any real fruit from the stage. The wine comes with more ragged edges than it does promise, and its scarce fruity heart warns against hopeful keeping."
