2012 Bodegas Castaño "Hécula" Monastrell Yecla Top Pick!
2012 Bodegas Castaño "Hécula" Monastrell Yecla

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The basic offering from proprietor Ramon Castano Santa, who owns a whopping 1,000 acres in Yecla, is the 2012 Hecula, which is sourced from a non-irrigated, single vineyard planted with 100% Monastrell. Aged in both tank and French oak, it comes from 60-80-year-old vines planted in limestone soils at a relatively high elevation of over 1,600 feet. Its opaque purple color is followed by copious aromas of blueberries, black raspberries, camphor, licorice, white flowers and a chalky limestone/dusty character. Full-bodied, rich and well-balanced, it is an in ...Read More »

2013 Casa Castillo Monastrell Jumilla

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Yields for the 2013 Monastrell (100% Monastrell aged six months in neutral French oak barrels, concrete and foudres) were 16 to 25 hectoliters per hectare, which is about half of that permitted in Burgundy. An amazing value, this wine boasts a dense blue/purple color as well as a sumptuous nose of blueberries, blackberries, scorched earth, licorice and forest floor. Stunningly pure and medium to full-bodied with oodles of fruit, this is a remarkable value to drink until the cows come home. Consume it over the next 2-3 years. Considered by many observers ...Read More »

2013 Bodegas Castaño Monastrell Viñas Viejas Yecla (Previously $12)

In the southeast of Spain sandwiched between Jumilla and Alicante, wines from Yecla have most prolifically come from what happens to be the largest co-op in Spain. However the Castaño family stands as the most important and ambitious privately owned winery in the D.O., and they have gone to great lengths to push the quality from the often coarse wines for which this region was previously known. Bodegas Castaño started small and has nurtured their old vine plantings, which has done much for their Yecla renaissance. Their four prime estate vineyards now co... Read More »

2013 Bedrock Wine Company "Ode to Lulu" Old Vine Rosé Top Pick!
2013 Bedrock Wine Company "Ode to Lulu" Old Vine Rosé

92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Pale orange. An assertively perfumed bouquet evokes raspberry, blood orange and Asian spices, with an intense floral quality and zesty minerality adding complexity. Dry and precise on the palate, offering sappy red berry, citrus fruit and floral flavors and a jolt of white pepper. Spicy and linear on the long, incisive finish, which leaves red fruit and floral notes behind. (ST)" (6/2014)91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Clearly one of the greatest roses I have tasted over the last few years, Bedrock’s 2013 Ode to Lulu ranks alongside some of the fabulous dry roses made by Domaine de la M ...Read More »

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Light orange. Ripe citrus fruits and strawberry on the fragrant nose and in the mouth. Pliant and seamless in texture, showing good breadth and depth as well as vivacity. A touch of white pepper adds bite to the taut, refreshingly brisk, persistent finish." (6/2014) Wine & Spirits: "A project from Alberto Orte and Patrick Mata (of Olé Imports), Norrel Robertson, MW, (a Scot making wine in Spain) and Charles Bieler (of Bieler Père et Fils), this 'Provence-style' rosé is crisp and lean, with sour cherry fruit and light herbal notes. All proceeds go to the TJ Martell Found ...Read More »

2011 Domaine du Gros Noré Bandol

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Both of the reds are brilliant and most likely the wines of the vintage, the 2011 Bandol comes from 30-year-old vines and is a blend of 80% Mourvedre, 15% Grenache and 5% Cinsault. Aged 18 months in foudre, it’s a dense, concentrated 2011 that offers notions of black cherry, blackberry, earth and ground herbs on the nose. This flows to a full-bodied, gorgeously put together palate that has considerable structure, superb purity of fruit and a knockout finish. Give it another 2-3 years in the cellar and enjoy it over the following 15 years or more. Created ...Read More »

2013 Capcanes "Mas Picosa" Montsant Spain Top Pick!
2013 Capcanes "Mas Picosa" Montsant Spain

Capcanes winery has an interesting story that mirrors those of many European wineries. Cooperatives allowed small family wineries that might otherwise have been driven under by financial obligations, to survive. They pool their resources and use one main facility to process their grapes and make their wines. Thanks to that system, many growers were able to continue to farm through tougher times. Now thanks to fresh investment, many have broken away from the cooperatives to produce very high-quality artisan wines. Capcanes winery produces many wines. The ... Read More »

2014 Bedrock Wine Company "Ode to Lulu" Rosé

From the winery: "Like the last few years, this rosé comes from vines planted prior to 1940 (or perhaps we should say prior to FDR's third term). Picked specifically for rosé, at lower potential alcohol and whole-cluster pressed, this pale and perfumed rosé belies its lighter color and has plenty of density. It bears a strong resemblance to the 2010 and 2011, both of which are still showing nicely now. The backbone of the wine is the ancient Mourvedre--with all of its coniferous perfume and spice--with dashes of Cemetary Vineyard Carignane for salty crun... Read More »

2012 Cline "Ancient Vines" Contra Costa County Mourvèdre

This scrumptious and unusually delightful wine has a substantial mouth-feel followed by soft tannins. Food Pairing: Try this wine with grilled lamb, wild mushroom ragout or peppercorn crusted beef tenderloin." More or less unresolved on the finish but time will take care of that."

Produced by Gil family estates, this is a delicious red wine in this newly (finally!) popular large format. At less than $7 per liter, dare I say that red wine does not get much more delicious and gulpable than this? Pioneers in the production of wines from Monastrell grapes grown in the Southeastern portion of Spain, the Gil family know this grape and Jumilla's calcareous vineyard sites as well as anyone. And since they have grown steadily over the years, their expertise and scale combine to make this truly one of the best dollar-for-dollar reds we've g... Read More »

2010 Hewitson "Old Garden" Mourvedre Barossa Valley South Australia

97 points James Halliday: "Clear crimson; a wine that is complete and confident in itself, effortlessly filling the bouquet and palate with its small red and black fruits, a shimmer of tannins throughout, and a lingering finish. Vines planted 1853." (5/2013)96 points James Suckling: "Nick Stock: This ancient vineyard (planted in 1853) is a source of profound and distinctive wine that delivered handsomely in 2010. There's an unmistakably sanguine edge to this: meaty and earthy, darkblue fruits and a wealth of black, graphite-like terroir character. The palate scoops deep and even, really soulful dense tannins ...Read More »

2009 Hecht & Bannier Bandol

90 points Wine Spectator: "Well-sculpted, with intense notes of hot stone and mineral to the flavors of raspberry tart, pomegranate, spiced cherry and roasted walnut. Black olive and dark chocolate fill the powerfully tannic finish. Drink now through 2018. 2,000 cases made." (10/2013) Jancis Robinson: "Mourvèdre, Grenache, Cinsault. Bright, ripe, pure fruit nose. Black fruit, sloe berries, dark and tarry. Brambles and thick cough-medicine and crushed black-olive bitterness. Full of sturdy meaty Bandol character, but the very chewy muscular tannins are formidable and quite dry. (TC)" (1/2012) K&L Notes: A Mourvedr... Read More »

2012 Casa Castillo Monastrell Jumilla

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A spectacular offering from Jumilla, Casa Castillo’s 2012 Monastrell (100% Mourvedre aged six months in neutral French oak barrels) comes from old vines and yields averaging between 16 and 25 hectoliters per hectare. It exhibits notes of black raspberries, blueberries, acacia flowers, a dusty, chalky character no doubt from the limestone soils, and a medium-bodied, ripe, rich, concentrated mouthfeel that lingers in the mouth. Of the 2007 Domaine Tempier "La Migoua" Bandol ,According to importer Kermit Lynch writes: "[2007] is a great vintage for Tempier in the sense that the reds have quite a monumental quality, grand wines brimming with flavor, and they will obviously age almost forever. To compare them to something, trying to give you an idea of the vintage style, I'd look to really stunning Bordeaux vintages like 1945 or 1947. I mean, there is one hell of a lot of wine in these wines ... La Migoua is fat and sweet and juicy. The nose combines ripe black cherry with dried thyme and other local herbs. Don't let my use of the word sweet throw you. I couldn't believe that Migoua 2007 is really dry, but Ravier showed me the analysis. When I once had the luck to taste a 1947 Cheval Blanc, I had the same impression."
