French Wine

When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its regions, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and occasionally as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a 100 lives. To understand and appreciate French wine, you only need to begin tasting them. Check out some of the top picks that our buyers have tracked down - several of these wines are imported directly from France.

Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 2012 Domaine Confuron-Cotetidot Chambolle-Musigny ((88-91BH)). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "This is markedly ripe yet manages to retain a sense of elegance to the pure black cherry fruit and wet stone scents. There is a cool and energetic feel to the mineral-driven and refined middle weight flavors that possess lovely detail on the balanced, austere and lingering finish." (01/2014)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2003 René et Vincent Dauvissat Chablis Grand Cru "Les Clos" (92ST, 91BH). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Pure, bracing aromas of citrus skin, pineapple, minerals, iodine, nutmeg and wet stone. Then dense, vibrant and precise, with penetrating flavors of lemon ices, spices, minerals, licorice, juniper and aromatic herbs. This very rich grand cru is technically very low in acidity, yet it seems full of life and finishes firm. 92+ (ST)" (07/2005)

Of the 2012 Domaine Confuron-Cotetidot Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru "Suchots",Vinous writes: "Full medium red. The aromas and flavors of black raspberry, coffee and tropical dark chocolate show an almost liqueur-like ripeness. Rich, layered and deep, showing near-grand cru density, solidity and lift. And yet not at all overly sweet. Outstanding Suchots, finishing with superb length and considerable power. Bid on this magnum of 2005 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac (1.5L) (96JS, 96W&S, 96WE, 93ST, 93WS, 92RP). Wine Enthusiast: "Classic Lynch-Bages with just a bit of extra power and richness. While the tannins are structured, it is the velvety fruit that rolls around the mouth that is the most dominant character. It is coming together into a wine that will be big and dense, but never over the top" (06/2008)

2000 Grand-Puy-Lacoste, Pauillac
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2000 Grand-Puy-Lacoste, Pauillac (95RP, 92ST, 92WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2000 Château Grand Puy Lacoste is an exceptional wine from Xavier Borie. It has a brilliant nose of blackberry, crushed stone, graphite and cedar. Putting it to one side for ten to 15 minutes reveals subtle mint-like aromas that whisk you straight to Pauillac. The palate is smooth and silky, cloaking the tannic frame of this GPL so that you barely notice it. But that will stand it in good stead for the long-term, the cornerstone of all great wines from this estate. Then there is that hint of spice on the aftertaste—the show ain't over yet. Served alongside a magnum of Pichon Baron 2000, I would say that at the moment, it does not quite possess the same level of precision. However, it remains a magnificent Pauillac to cherish long-term. Tasted January 2016. (NM)" (07/2016)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Totally shut down and enclosed, with an impressively saturated purple/black color and a promising but tightly strung nose of mineral, vanilla, espresso, black cherry and currant, this wine has beautiful purity, medium to full body, relatively high but sweet tannin, and a long 30-35 second finish. This full-bodied classic boasts a dense purple color as well as a superb nose of graphite, creme de cassis, forest floor, licorice and a hint of truffles, low acidity, and extravagant richness. Most of the tannins have been resolved in this superstar of the vintage. It should continue to drink well for 10-15+ years. (RP) 95+" (08/2014)

1983 Gruaud-Larose, St-Julien
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1983 Gruaud-Larose, St-Julien (93VN, 92RP, 90WS). Vinous: "(64% cabernet sauvignon, 29% merlot, 4% cabernet franc and 3% petit verdot): Bright medium red with an amber edge. Archetypal mature Gruaud-Larose aromas of truffle, smoked beef, earth, cedar, and tobacco complicate red cherry on the expressive. Fresh and juicy in the mouth, with a graceful quality to the red cherry, spicecake, orange rind and aromatic herb flavors. The finish is bright, long and clean, showing subtle underbrush notes at the back. I have always felt the 1983 Gruaud to be a success but bottles I've had in the past have been marked by gamey, animal aromas and dry, earthy flavors. Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 1996 Maurice Ecard Savigny-Les-Beaune 1er Cru "Les Peuillets". Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The medium ruby-colored Savigny-Les-Beaune Les Peuillets displays earth, mineral, and ripe cherry fruit scents. This delicious, rich, well-crafted, silky, and medium-to-full-bodied wine is firmer than the Serpentieres. Metals, stones, and wild red berries can be found its flavor profile and in its lingering, supple tannin-packed finish. Projected maturity: 1999-2005. Maurice Ecard, the owner and highly-talented winemaker of this estate, bottled (fined but unfiltered) all his 1996s in September, 1997, just barely 12 months after the harvest. Of the 2014 François Chidaine "Clos du Breuil" Montlouis Sur Loire (sec),François Chidaine is a biodynamic producer in the Loire Valley specializing in Chenin Blanc. Rated 94+ John Gilman writes: "François Chidaine’s Clos de Breuil bottling is always a bit exotic in a lineup of other Montlouis cuvées, as this vineyard’s flint soils (like Pouilly-Fumé) give the wine a very unique personality. The 2014 is another absolutely stellar wine, delivering a complex and vibrant nose of quince, apple, orange zest, gorgeously refined silex soil tones, a hint of rhubarb, citrus peel and a discreet topnote of the lanolin to come with bottle age. Bid on this bottle of 2000 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac (97WE, 96RP, 95VN, 93JS, 93WS). Wine Enthusiast: "With its distinctive antique bottle and gold etched label dominated by a sheep, this is definitely a move away from classic Bordeaux bottling. It is good that the wine can support the presentation. The fruit is so ripe, it almost tastes of raisins, but that sweetness is finely balanced by the dry tannins and concentrated texture. To finish, there are exotic spices, giving an almost oriental character to the long aftertaste. (RV)" (06/2003)

Allen Meadows - Burghound: " Here the aromatic profile is completely different with dark berries, plum, spice and violets. There is fine concentration to the velvet textured medium weight flavors that possess plenty of dry extract that successfully buffers the otherwise very firm and moderately rustic tannins on the exceptionally long finish. This is very Nuits and clearly built to age so there is no point buying this if you do not intend to cellar if for the long-term. *Outstanding*" (01/2013)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2000 Haut-Brion, Pessac-Léognan (99RP, 97JD, 96ST, 96WE, 95JS, 94WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted from an ex-château bottle in Bordeaux, I was not surprised to find the 2000 Château Haut-Brion flirting with perfection. The nose is simply breathtaking - quintessential Haut-Brion with ebullient red berry fruit, roasted herbs, gravel, terracotta tiles on a warm summer's day...it is simply wave after wave of intoxicating scents that could bring even the most stoic person to tears of joy. The palate displays heavenly balance, pitch-perfect acidity, perhaps spicier than previous bottles that I have tasted, and what depth and dimension in this outstanding wine. That hint of graphite on the finish is a cheeky nod to Pauillac, as if to thumb its nose at the First Growths, because alongside Château Latour, almost by stealth, the Haut-Brion is one of the greatest Bordeaux in this millennial year. 1985 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1985 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac (96JG, 93RP, 90WS). John Gilman: "This was my last bottle of ’85 Lafite out of the cellar, as I only bought three bottles when it was released and dearly wish I had bought more, as the wine is rather more expensive today than it was back in 1987! This is an utterly brilliant year for Lafite and one of my favorite wines of the vintage, as it offers up a deep and very complex nose of cassis, sweet dark berries, a touch of fresh coconut, beautifully complex, gravelly soil tones, cigar smoke, fresh herbs and cedar. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very refined, with a rock solid core of sappy fruit, stunning complexity, impeccable focus and balance, moderate tannins and a fairly powerful finish (particularly for Lafite from this era) that closes with great purity and grip. A brilliant synthesis of the vintage’s plush and suave personality and the inimitable elegance of Lafite. (Drink between 2012-2060)" (09/2014)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1990 Tertre-Roteboeuf, St-Emilion ((75-94RP), 94ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "... the third bottle had a beautiful dark plum/garnet color to the rim, with just a hint of lightening, a sensationally exotic nose of roasted coffee, melted chocolate, herbs, and sweet kirsch and plum. Even a hint of fig made it into the wine’s gorgeous aromatic display. In the mouth, the wine was full-bodied, powerful, rich, still showing some tannin to shed, but the sweetness, expansiveness, exuberance, and overall purity were stunning. This wine, which had the same level of ullage as the other two, was a completely different experience than the two bottles that had a maderized characteristic. .. (RP)" (06/2009)

Most of the holdings at this Domaine have old vines. Prior to 1987 the wines were sold to negociants such as Leroy and Jadot. The 2000 Calon Segur is one of those wines that reminds you how great the millennial vintage could be. Now at fifteen years old, it has a brilliant, vivacious red berry nose infused with ash and cigar box aromas. The detail here is a beguiling and it just "sings" Saint Estèphe. The palate is medium-bodied with dense, firm tannin that provide a rigid backbone, but it is swathed in copious tobacco-drenched black fruit and a superb line of acidity. It finishes with a twist of bitter cherry on the finish that completes what is a deeply impressive Calon-Ségur; it might just outclass the 2005. (NM)" (10/2016)

1982 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1982 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac (100JS, 100RP, 98ST, 98WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This wine remains one of the legends of Bordeaux. It has thrown off the backward, youthful style that existed during its first 25 years of life, and over the last 4-5 years has developed such secondary nuances as cedar and spice box. The creme de cassis, underlying floral note, full-bodied power, extraordinary purity, multilayered texture, and finish of over a minute are a showcase for what this Chateau accomplished in 1982. The wine is still amazingly youthful, vibrant, and pure. It appears capable of remaining fruity and vibrant in 2082! Thank God it is beginning to budge, as I would like to drink most of my supply before I kick the bucket. This is a great, still youthful wine, and, on occasion, one does understand the hierarchy of Bordeaux chateaux when you see the complexity and brilliance of this first-growth. Bid on this magnum of 1990 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac (1.5L) (96RP, 96ST, 95WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1990 Lafite has turned out far better than my early assessment. While it still possesses some firmness, and performs like a late adolescent in terms of its evolution, it boasts gorgeous aromas of cedar, tobacco leaf, cassis, and lead pencil shavings. The explosive aromas are followed by a fleshy, full-bodied wine that should hit its peak in 5-8 years, and last for 25-30 more. (RP)" (06/2009)

Of the 2008 Domaine Bizot Echézeaux Grand Cru,Allen Meadows - Burghound writes: "Very mild reduction allows the mix of spicy red and blue Pinot fruit to peek through the funk where the spiciness continues onto the earth suffused flavors that are supported by slightly riper tannins, all wrapped in a deeper, longer and more serious finish where both touches of minerality and austerity surface. This has excellent potential." (01/2010)

1990 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1990 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac (94ST). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright red with a pale rim. Knockout nose of aromatic herbs, strawberry, sweet spices and acacia flower; yet another wine strongly marked by its Cabernet Franc presence. Fresh and vibrant, this absolutely dances on the palate with strawberry, sour red cherry and raspberry flavors complicated by gunflint and herbs. High acidity provides great clarity and cut to the long, floral, smoothly tannic finish. This has improved considerably with bottle age. Harvested from September 18 through October 3, this Mouton offers amazing balance and fragrance. In 1990 Mouton was still using a heavy toast for its barriques, which resulted in a smoky quality in the wines that was considered by many to be just as typical of Mouton as its opulence. 2000 Maison Leroy Bourgogne Rouge
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2000 Maison Leroy Bourgogne Rouge. Robert M. Parker writes: “I have said it so many times that it may seem redundant, but if you missed it in my 1990 tome, Burgundy, Lalou Bize-Leroy stands virtually alone at the top of Burgundy’s quality hierarchy. Because she is a perfectionist, and because she has had the courage to produce wines from low yields and bottle them naturally, without fining or filtration, she has been scorned by many Burgundy negociants, and even by the proprietors of other top domaines. Not only are they jealous, they are frightened of Bize-Leroy because they fear increasing pressure for lower yields and bio-dynamic farming. Anyone who loves great Burgundy, must realize that her wines embarrass much of what is produced in Burgundy.”

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The exceptional 2002 Chablis Les Clos bursts with white flowers, smoke, salt, and flint. Medium to full-bodied, it has awesome depth, purity, concentration, and length. An underlying, coiled nugget of power can be discerned in this complex wine’s character. Rocks, pears, spices, seashells, and white peaches make up this glorious offering’s nuanced flavor profile. (PR)" (02/2004)

2002 Fontaine Gagnard Batard Montrachet Grand Cru
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2002 Fontaine Gagnard Batard Montrachet Grand Cru (95BH). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "This is admirably ripe as well but no where near as ripe as the Criots and the overall impression, oddly enough given that we're talking about Bâtard here, is one of greater elegance and finesse if less raw power. To be sure, this is a big, robust, powerful wine of considerable depth and sappy extract with flavors that are impeccably balanced with obvious reserve on the stunningly long finish. In particular, there is a penetrating intensity which is impressive and one can easily sense the class and as noted, this is a remarkably graceful Bâtard." (07/2004)

2002 Léoville-Las-Cases, St-Julien
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2002 Léoville-Las-Cases, St-Julien (95RP, 94WS, 93ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Only 43% of the production made it into the final blend of this remarkable 2002. Produced from a low 17 hectoliters per hectare, it includes 66.7% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14.5% Merlot, 13.9% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot. It has the highest alcohol ever achieved in a Leoville Las Cases (13.5%) as well as a lofty pH of 3.85. Nevertheless, the impression is one of a structured wine with considerable density, a ruby/purple color, layers of flavor, and a classic overall personality. The wine exhibits pure black currant, licorice-infused fruit, huge body, a viscous mid-palate, and a long, heady finish. I suspect this wine won’t be nearly as charming as the 2003 in its youth, but it hasn’t yet closed down, and I am amazed at just how rich, intense, and full-bodied it tastes even after bottling. This is certainly one of the half dozen or so candidates for wine of the vint

It is a brilliant effort from the young Janouiex, but it needs some cellaring. (RP)" (04/2008)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2010 Puligny-Montrachet Pucelles is a totally complete wine. It brings together the expressive bouquet and minerality of Combettes with some of the expressive fruit of the Folatieres. Vivid and multi-dimensional in the glass, the Pucelles wraps around the palate with serious intensity. Citrus, white flowers and green pears linger on the highly nuanced, refined finish. Today, though, the 2010 is incredibly tight. Its pedigree is impossible to miss. Leflaive’s Pucelles is easily one of the highlights of the vintage. (AG) 95+" (08/2012)

Full-bodied and opulent, this is an amazing wine from a terroir on the so-called “wrong side” of St.-Emilion. Drink it over the next 15 or more years. It is an amazing performance. (RP)" (06/2015)

1982 Latour, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1982 Latour, Pauillac (100DC, 100RP, 100VN, 98JS, 98WS, 97ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Always somewhat atypical, the 1982 Latour has been the most opulent, flamboyant, and precocious of the northern Medocs, especially the St.-Juliens, Pauillacs, and St.-Estephes. It hasn't changed much over the last 10-15 years, revealing sweet tannins as well as extraordinarily decadent, even extravagant levels of fruit, glycerin, and body. It is an amazing wine, and on several occasions, I have actually picked it as a right bank Pomerol because of the lushness and succulence of the cedary, blackberry, black currant fruit. This vintage has always tasted great, even in its youth, and revealed a precociousness that one does not associate with this Chateau. However, the 1982 is still evolving at a glacial pace. The concentration remains remarkable, and the wine is a full-bodied, exuberant, rich, classic Pauillac in its aromatic and flavor profiles...This remarkable effort wi

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1988 DRC Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru (95RP, (90-93JG), 92WS, 91BH). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I have been telling people for years that this domaine's 'best buy,' if such a label can be applied here, is the Grands Echezeaux. While it is not Romanee-Conti or La Tache, it often comes very close to those two titans, at a fraction of the price. In 1988, it is fabulous. In fact, my unedited tasting notes had the words 'fabulous' in them twice and 'awesome' once. It is decadently rich and spicy with an extraordinary perfume of violets, gamey, plum-like fruit, toasty new oak, and a finish that must last several minutes. (RP)" (01/1990)

Bid on this bottle of 2007 Domaine du Clos du Caillou "Reserve les Clos du Caillou" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (98RP, 95ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The largest scaled and most concentrated in the lineup is easily the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape La Reserve, which is 70% Grenache and 30% Mourvèdre that was raised all in demi-muids. Just a flat out sensational bottle of wine, it offers tons of black currants, licorice, roasted meats and toasted spice aromas and flavors in a full-bodied, seamless, perfectly balanced style that’s drunk well since release. It should be drinkable within 4-5 years, and keep for 25-30. This classic Pauillac is a worthy rival to the other-worldly 1996. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2025. (RP)" (02/1998)

Dense purple and full-bodied, with unbelievable richness, this tastes like a great Napa Cab from the Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard, even though there’s no Cabernet Sauvignon in it. The 2005 is a full-bodied DP with so much richness and loads of ripe fruit such as pineapple and papaya. It has a wonderful, creamy texture and a long and intense finish. Bid on this bottle of 2000 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage (96RP, 95WS, 94ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "More forward, open and textured, the 2000 Hermitage is an almost promiscuous effort that’s just hard to resist. According to Jean-Louis, this wine has never shut down and has always delivered plenty of pleasure. It has classic cassis and blackberry fruit, bacon fat, violets and herbs to go with a full-bodied, layered and seamless, if not voluptuous, style on the palate. I’d line bottles up for drinking over the coming couple of years, but it should hold nicely for upward of a decade. (JD)" (08/2014)

1975 Montrose, St-Estèphe
Bid on this bottle of 1975 Montrose, St-Estèphe (93DC). Decanter: "One of the better vintages of the 1970s, from an estate that was recognised to have been particularly successful right from the harvest and was spared the hail that affected some Médoc properties. Today, the nose is dominated by wonderful burnished tobacco, leather and truffle that are such classic markers of older Bordeaux. This is an older wine in its tertiary phase, no question, but it is soft and embracing rather than tired - it gives a shrug and invites you in. The aromatics are less clear than in its youth, but they are still warm, with rich wild strawberries and sweet blackberries burnished with the smoky embers of yesterday's fireplace. Vibrant but well-integrated racy acidity lends lift to the yellow currant and citrus fruit flavors. Superripe aromas of gunflint, game, smoke and earth; less precise and vibrant than the Pommard Rugiens or Grands Epenots. Then sweet, supple and dense, if not yet as explosive or expressive as Girardin wines from Volnay and Pommard. 'This is more hermetic,' says Girardin, adding that this cuvee is from 'cooler' soil. 2003 Domaine Prieure Roch Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru
Bid on this bottle of 2003 Domaine Prieure Roch Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru. Allen Meadows writes: "From 60-70 year old vines...This relatively young Domaine (founded in 1988) is now up to 12 ha of both owned and rented vineyards and M. Roch, who together with Aubert de Villaine co-directs the Domaine de la Romanee Conti, says he is always looking for additional vineyards to purchase. At the time of my visit, Messrs. Roch and Pacelet were in the middle of a huge renovation project for a new cellar and cuverie, which is situated across from the church in Premeaux, just south of Nuits St. Georges. As an aside, readers with long memories may remember the name Domaine Marion, long associated with its famous 1 ha parcel of Clos de Beze; M. Roch leased this parcel in 1994, which now provides the grapes for the Roch Clos de Beze."

2005 Mouton Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 2005 Mouton Rothschild, Pauillac (98JS, 98RP, 98VN, 95ST, 95WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Château Mouton-Rothschild is a deeply impressive First Growth. It has been blessed with a sensational nose that comes racing out of the blocks with audacious scents of black fruit, cedar, smoke and pencil box (Philippe Dhalluin mentioned that the signature smokiness/fireside hearth was tangible in around 80% of the vats during élevage). There is a sense of bravura here, of aristocracy. The palate is medium-bodied with sumptuous black fruit, perhaps beginning to soften in texture, one or two years off its plateau. There are layers and layers of black fruit intermingling with graphite and black pepper, and it wisely reins everything in on the finish that is more classic in style and in keeping with the vintage. If you are fortunate enough to have this wine in your cellar, even though those tannins are starting to be abraded by time, afford it another five or six

Its opaque plum/garnet color is accompanied by a gorgeous bouquet of smoke, charcoal, creme de cassis, and flowers. Aromas of creme de cassis, blueberry liqueur, charcoal, licorice, and graphite are followed by a stunningly rich, full-bodied, elegant, pure, gentle giant of a wine. Approaching full maturity, it should age effortlessly for another 30+ years. Kudos to proprietor Gerard Perse. (RP)" (06/2010)

The 2010 Christiane flows from the glass with a rich, exotic tapestry of dazzling fruit, black cherries, violets, licorice, spices and hard candy. Ample singed apple wood lines the finish, melded wonderfully with the fruit, while the minerality lingers on and on in the background, waiting in reserve. Bid on this bottle of 2005 Clos Rougeard "Brezé" Saumur Blanc ((92-93RP)). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Foucaults generally bottle only one white, from vines of forty years’ average age, planted in a clay-rich site on a retardant root stock that promotes harvesting Chenin after Cabernet, and this wine completely transcends other wines of Saumur appellation. (Occasionally – in years of truly widespread and noble rot – there is a sweet Coteaux Saumur from this small parcel instead.) Their 2005 Saumur Breze – tasted from new barrels – offered aromas and flavors of luscious peach, apple and honeydew melon splashed with sea spray and sprinkled with toasted almonds. As is often the case with Butteaux it has aged extremely well and while the term youthful wouldn't quite be accurate, this does still possess good freshness on the now fully mature aromas of shellfish, iodine and pear where there are no elements of sous-bois or truffle present. Opulent, savory, rich, and full-bodied, it is a head-turning, prodigious wine and a complete contrast to the extracted behemoth of Leoville Barton and the backward, classic Leoville Las Cases. 2011 Thierry Allemand Cornas "Sans Soufre"
Bid on this bottle of 2011 Thierry Allemand Cornas "Sans Soufre" (93ST). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright purple. Dark berries, cherry, peppery spices and a whiff of violet on the highly perfumed nose. Sappy and shapely on the palate, with zesty acidity giving juiciness and spine to the supple black and blue fruit flavors. Fresh and sharply focused, finishing with firm, dusty tannins and excellent persistence. This wine will very likely have to be labeled as a Vin de Table because the powers that be have apparently decided that it is atypical of the appellation. They have a point, but I'm not sure that it's the one they are trying to make. (JR)" (03/2014)

Sappy, incisive and floral in the mouth, offering nervy blackberry and bitter cherry flavors and a hint of smokiness. Finishes sappy and very long, leaving a sweet dark berry note behind. But then the substrate of black berry juice asserts itself. The fruits are fresh rather than sweet, combining with leather, spice and a presence of new wood. Typical of Montrose, it is hard to appreciate this young, with those tannins needing to open out. But wait 10 years. *Best of 2009, Cellar Selection* (RV) " (03/2009)

1978 Beychevelle, St-Julien
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1978 Beychevelle, St-Julien (91JG). John Gilman: "The 1978 Beychevelle could still do with a few more years in the cellar to fully blossom, but with a bit of extended aeration, it begins to emerge from its adolescent stage. Given the combination of the 1978 vintage’s slightly green edge and Beychevelle’s propensity to show a bit of bell pepper as well when it is still on the young side, there is a touch of herbaceousness here that may be a bit off-putting to those with a low tolerance to pyrazines. But the nose is complex and lovely at the same time, as it offers up scents of cherries, a touch of bell pepper (already moving in the direction of chipotles), cigar ash, lovely soil tones, a bit of tobacco leaf and a faint whiff of cedar. On the palate the wine is medium-full, long and complex, with fine elegance, moderate tannins, fine intensity of flavor and impressive length and grip on the tangy finish. I really like this wine, but would want to give it four

1996 Krug Brut Champagne
Bid on this bottle of 1996 Krug Brut Champagne (100W&S, 99ST, 99WS, 98VN, 97JG, 97RP). Wine & Spirits: "It's hard to imagine how a wine of this power can sustain perfect balance. What is now a more nonchalant intensity in the aroma was, in fact, too much to handle when we tasted this last year, as if the wine had no time for mere humans with their limited sense receptors. If you stop to taste ripe pear, ginger spice, apple blossom and butterscotch the wine leaves you lost in random flavor descriptors as it soars off into a vinous glow that lasts for minutes. This may well be the greatest vintage wine of Henri Krug's career (unless it is challenged by the 2002). It is impossible to predict how long this wine will thrive in bottle, though considering the current fine condition of the 1959 Krug, the first 50 years are a given." (12/2008)

Bid on this bottle of 2013 Domaine Olivier Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru (92BH). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Here cooler and more elegant aromas are comprised mostly of green apple, citrus fruit and white flowers scents that are nuanced by subtle wet stone notes where the latter element can also be found on the wonderfully precise, intense and refined middle weight plus flavors that possess terrific punch on the explosively long and markedly dry finish. Like the Pucelles this is not super complex but my score offers the benefit of the doubt that more is on the way with a few years of cellar time."

1995 Mouton Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1995 Mouton Rothschild, Pauillac (95JS, 95RP, 95VN, 94WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Bottled in June, 1997, this profound Mouton is more accessible than the more muscular 1996. A blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 19% Merlot, it reveals an opaque purple color, and reluctant aromas of cassis, truffles, coffee, licorice, and spice. In the mouth, the wine is 'great stuff,' with superb density, a full-bodied personality, rich mid-palate, and a layered, profound finish that lasts for 40+ seconds. There is outstanding purity and high tannin, but my instincts suggest this wine is lower in acidity and slightly fleshier than the brawnier, bigger 1996. Both are great efforts from Mouton-Rothschild. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2030. (RP)" (02/1998)

It has a delightful bouquet with red cherry, crushed strawberry and fine mineralité for a village cru. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity, a touch of tangy marmalade infusing the red berry fruit, with fine structure and acidity towards the energetic finish. Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2007 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape (100RP, 97WS, 95ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the great vintages from this estate, surpassing even the 1990, 2000, 2001, 2003, and maybe the 2010 (time will tell with this one), the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape from Vincent Avril delivers everything you could want from a wine. Full-bodied, intense and beautifully concentrated, with plenty of muscle and depth, it shows the hallmark elegance and purity of the estate, with sensational notes of kirsch liqueur, raspberries, incense, smoked meats and Asian spices. The blend is the normal 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah and the rest a mix of permitted varieties, brought up all in older foudre, and it's just now entering its prime drink window and has another two decades of longevity. 2003 Lafite Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2003 Lafite Rothschild, Pauillac (100RP, 98JS, 97WE, 96WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2003 Lafite Rothschild comes as close to perfection as any of the great Lafites made over the past three decades (1982, 1986, 1996, 2000, 2005, 2008, 2009 and 2010). This sensational effort came in at 12.7% natural alcohol, it is made in the style of one of this estate’s great classics, the 1959. Composed of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it exhibits a dense ruby/purple color to the rim along with a luxurious bouquet of cedarwood, lead pencil shaving, white chocolate, cocoa and cassis. Fat, rich, opulent and full-bodied with low acidity and stunning seductiveness and complexity, this noble wine possesses a bountiful, generous, heady style. It is just coming into its plateau of maturity where it should hold for 20-25 years. This is one of the candidates for the wine of the vintage – make no mistake about that. (RP)"

2010 Edmond Vatan "Clos la Neore" Sancerre
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2010 Edmond Vatan "Clos la Neore" Sancerre (96JG, 95RP). John Gilman: "The 2010 Clos la Néore from the Vatans is utterly stunning and one of the best young vintages of this wine I have ever had the pleasure to taste. The utterly pure and laser-like bouquet soars from the glass in a blaze of lime, tart orange, kaleidoscopic minerality, fresh-culled mint, citrus blossoms and gently grassy tones. On the palate the wine is deep, pure and razor-sharp, with brilliant delineation, a great core of pure fruit, snappy acids, crystalline minerality and utterly magical length and grip on the multi-faceted finish. The 2010 Clos la Néore does not seem to have quite the ripeness of other recent top vintages of this wine, such as 2005, 2002 or 1997, and this gives the new vintage a raciness that is utterly extraordinary. 1986 Gruaud-Larose, St-Julien
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1986 Gruaud-Larose, St-Julien (96RP, 95ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Still tasting as if it were only 7-8 years of age, the dense, garnet/purple-colored 1986 Gruaud-Larose is evolving at a glacier pace. The wine still has mammoth structure, tremendous reserves of fruit and concentration, and a finish that lasts close to a minute. The wine is massive, very impressively constituted, with still some mouth-searing tannin to shed. Decanting of one to two hours in advance seems to soften it a bit, but this is a wine that seems to be almost immortal in terms of its longevity. It is a great Medoc classic, and certainly one of the most magnificent Gruaud-Larose ever made. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2035. (RP)" (01/2003)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Performing even better from bottle than it did from barrel, this appears to be the finest Lynch Bages since the 2000, 1990 and 1989. According to the chateau, the 2009 has the highest level of polyphenols ever measured as well as high alcohol (nearly 13.5%). A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest largely Merlot with touches of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it is an expressive, voluptuously textured effort with unctuosity and powerful, juicy, succulent blackberry and black currant flavors, low acids, a layered, massive mouthfeel, but no sense of heaviness or fatigue. The 2011 Clos la Néore is another superb wine in the making, with a very classic aromatic and flavor profile and great potential for longevity (though perhaps not the steely spine of acidity of the 2010 here). 1995 Clos Rougeard Saumur Champigny
Bid on this bottle of 1995 Clos Rougeard Saumur Champigny. The Foucault brothers Nady and Charlie are the owners of Clos Rougeard, and in France, at least, their wines have certainly achieved Cult-like status with every three-star restaurant in Paris hustling to get a small allocation. Not surprisingly, hardly anyone in American has even heard of Clos Rougeard. Well, we're here to change all that. This estate has been in the family for several generations. The Foucault brothers tend exceptional vineyards, harvest at small yields, vinify in barrel, let the wines age for a couple of years in a frigid cellar and bottle without filtration. The result (even in "challenging" years like 1999) is a few of the top red wines of the Loire Valley and in the top of France as a whole. Charles Joguet, the great winemaker of Chinon, once said: "there are two suns. One shines outside for everybody. The second shines in the Foucaults' cellar." 100% cabernet franc and designed for all manner of food.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the Pontet-Canet vertical in London, the 2005 Château Pontet-Canet has long been one of the stars of the vintage and this might well be the best of over a dozen showings of this wine. However, do not expect ostentation on the nose. This is 2005 and like many wines of this vintage, even with considerable decanting, it remained broody and introspective on the nose, as if it is checking you out and seeing if you are worthy. Once you have been accepted, then it swings the doors open to reveal gorgeous scents of blackberry, briary and cassis fruit, perhaps a little more sous-bois than I have noticed compared to previous bottles. The palate is medium-bodied, but dense and structured—certainly a more masculine Pontet-Canet built for long-term ageing. Yet it retains marvelous freshness and vitality all the way through to the pencil-lead, quite saline finish. I suspe

2007 Domaine Raveneau Chablis Grand Cru "Blanchots"
Bid on this bottle of 2007 Domaine Raveneau Chablis Grand Cru "Blanchots" ((94-95RP), 94BH, 93ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "From barrel, the 2007 Chablis Blanchots – from a high-elevation eastern exposure, and some of the estate’s oldest vines – displays aromas of high-toned citrus oil, toasted nuts, ocean breezes, and quarry dust. Startlingly gripping and pungent, this might not represent the last word in finesse, but it makes an emphatic, zesty, intensely saline and stony statement that I am very timid to contradict! This really tugs at the salivary glands, and finishes with an energetic crescendo of citrus and diverse expressions of things mineral. When questions are raised about the ability of great Chablis – and Burgundy in general – to transcend what one can imagine issuing from grapes, here is a prime exhibit to offer. (DS)" (12/2009)

Take textbook St.-Julien warmed fig, blueberry compote and blackberry reduction notes along with ample graphite, bramble and tobacco flavors, then dial it up a notch. This has terrific energy to offset the admirable depth and length, and hasn't even started a second phase yet. One of the stars of the vintage.—2000 Bordeaux blind retrospective (December 2015). Of the 1979 Certan de May, Pomerol,John Gilman writes: "It had been quite a number of years since I last had a bottle of the 1979 Certan de May, and I made up for it well in 2005 and 2006 with four or five opportunities to taste the wine. The 1979 Certan de May has not lost a step as it passed its twentieth-fifth birthday, and is clearly a candidate for wine of the vintage. The nose is deep and beautifully pure, offering up notes of red and black plums, a bit of black raspberries, chocolate, tobacco, delicate hints of game and summer truffle, woodsmoke, a whisper of spicy wood and crushed violets. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and resolved, with a lovely core of black raspberry fruit, outstanding complexity, impeccable balance, tangy acidity, and a very long, polished and refined finish of excellent in

Suggestions of white truffle and iris waft ethereally throughout, while subtle suggestions of toasted nuts, iodine, clam liquor, and fruit pit add underlying, persistent piquancy. This is such a scintillating Chablis, one that encapsulates everything great about the 2010 vintage. The nose is mineral through and through--imagine getting down on your hands and knees and just inhaling limestone after a shower. The palate continues that tensile, mineral-driven theme. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2000 Troplong Mondot, St-Emilion (96RP, 92ST, 92WE). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Extremely young with an unbelievable deep purple color, the 2000 Troplong Mondot has hardly budged since I tasted it in 2003. Two recent tastings confirmed that this is the greatest Troplong Mondot between their profound 1990 and more recent vintages such as 2005, 2008, and 2009. Copious chocolate, graphite, blackberry, blueberry, cassis, and ink characteristics are present in this full-bodied, powerful, massive St.-Emilion. While the tannins are noticeable, they are better integrated than they were seven years ago, and the fruit, extract, and richness clearly outweigh the wine’s structure. Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 2000 Péby Faugères, St-Emilion (96RP, (90-91ST), 90JS, 90WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The luxury cuvee from Faugeres (owned by Bernard Magrez), the 2000 Peby Faugeres is the real deal. Sadly, only 500+ cases were made of this compelling St.-Emilion. An inky/blue/purple hue is accompanied by aromas of espresso roast, blueberry liqueur, smoke, and graphite. Thick and unctuously-textured with impressive purity and depth as well as full-bodied power and richness, it needs another 2-3 years of cellaring, and should last for two decades. (RP)" (06/2010)

Bid on this 3L-bottle of 2005 Clarke, Listrac (3L) (OWC - (90-92RP), (89-91WE), 89WS) in original wood. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Space limitations did not allow complete tasting notes for this Cru Bourgeois, but 2005 is the finest vintage for these wines since 1982. The range of scores for these wines should give readers an idea of just how consistent this vintage is at this level. Given the style of the vintage, most of these wines should be accessible young yet evolve for a decade or more because of their concentration and tannic structure. (RP)" (04/2006)

2004 Carruades de Lafite, Pauillac (1.5L)
Bid on this magnum of 2004 Carruades de Lafite, Pauillac (1.5L) ((89-90RP)). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Lafite’s second wine has become stronger over recent vintages as the selection for the grand vin has become Draconian under administrator Charles Chevalier. The dense ruby/purple-tinged 2004 Carruades de Lafite (48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 47% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) exhibits sweet, crunchy, savory, black cherry, and raspberry fruit along with hints of road tar, spring flowers, and a touch of minerality. 1994 Cheval Blanc, St. Emilion
Bid on this bottle of 1994 Cheval Blanc, St. Emilion. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Dark ruby/purple-colored, with a complex, spicy, tobacco, vanilla, blackcurrant, mineral, and floral-scented nose, the 1994 is a bigger, more structured wine than the 1993, its older sibling, but is it better? The wine finishes with mouthsearing tannin, which detracts from the otherwise impressive aromatics and sweet, medium-bodied, lush attack. As I have written many times in the past, Cheval Blanc has a tendency to fatten up, put on weight, and expand both aromatically and texturally with age, so perhaps this wine will move in that direction." 1990 Petrus, Pomerol
Bid on this bottle of 1990 Petrus, Pomerol (100JS, 100RP, 98WS, 97ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1990 Petrus remains incredibly young, one of the least evolved wines of the vintage (along with Montrose and Beausejour-Duffau). This dense ruby/purple-colored effort is beginning to hint at the massive richness and full-bodied intensity lurking beneath its wall of tannin. The vintage’s sweetness, low acidity, and velvety tannins are present in abundance, and the wine is massive in the mouth as well as incredibly pure and well-delineated. I thought it would be drinkable by now, but it appears another 5-10 years will pass before it begins to reach its plateau of maturity. This wine is capable of lasting at least four more decades. An incredible achievement! (RP)" (06/2009)

Turns to sweet, crushed berries. Full-bodied, with very polished tannins and a berry and mineral aftertaste. The serious tannin structure is still hiding behind the fruit of the wine. Tightly wound and beautiful. Solid as a rock. A classic wine. (JS, Web Only-2009) "

Nevertheless, the incredible quality is present in its purity, focus, full-bodied richness and awesome finish. 1981 Latour, Pauillac (1.5L)
Bid on this magnum of 1981 Latour, Pauillac (1.5L). According to Robert Parker: "The 1981 tastes remarkably velvety and supple for such a young Latour--not that this is a malevolent occurrence--because the excellence, complexity, and richness of the wine are still present. The color is dark ruby, the bouquet offers plenty of ripe cassis and spicy oak, and the flavor is generous, silky, moderately tannic, and long in the finish. Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1999 Ausone, St-Emilion (95RP, 94WS, 92ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Is the 1999 Ausone the wine of the vintage? Dense purple color, a compelling bouquet of licorice, minerals, black and blueberry liqueur, extraordinary delineation, high tannin, superb extract, and phenomenal richness all are the stuff of a legend. This wine seems impossible to have emerged from a vintage like 1999. Proprietor Alain Vauthier produced only 20,000 bottles because he eliminated one-fourth of the tiny crop. The result is out-and-out fabulous, but the wine needs 12-15 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2050. (RP)" (04/2002)

1966 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1966 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac (96RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "My God, this is a wonderful mature Lafite. Served blind chez Rosemary George MW it has a definable Pauillac nose with subtle notes of cedar, sous-bois and a touch of dried blood. It has incredible harmony and purity – a bouquet that has you instantly captivated. The palate does not disappoint: a beguiling sense of natural harmony and delineation, not the weight of Latour nor the femininity of Margaux, but a Lafite aiming for understated sophistication. Delicate cedar and cigar box towards the finish that just goes on and on. This bottle vindicates my first encounter in Bordeaux, when it similarly bewitched its audience. Absolutely sublime. A point. 1996 Pichon-Baron, Pauillac

The nose is fragrant and generous with more red fruit than black, cedar and tobacco, fine definition, perhaps a little rustic in keeping with the winemaking at the time, but certainly giving lots of pleasure. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin -- a cohesive Pauillac with plenty of depth and fine balance. The acidity lends this plenty of freshness and it does not shortchange you with plenty of tarry, cedary fruit. You come away with the impression that this Pichon Baron is going to continue to improve although I would not burn anyone at the stake for opening it now. If you cannot afford the First Growth then this (and Pichon Lalande) would be where I would come. (NM)" (10/2016)

1996 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1996 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac (97VN, 96RP, 95ST). Vinous: "What a treat it is to taste these two Pichon Lalandes straight from the chateau’s cellar. The 1996 Pichon Lalande is stratospheric from the very first taste. The deep, layered bouquet alone is deeply transfixing. Smoke, mocha, dark spices, lavender, crème de cassis, a host of dark-fleshed fruits and a touch of warm, resonant sweetness from the French oak draw me in. All of those sensations follow through to the palate, where the wine is massive, intense and totally enveloping. Time has softened the tannins to the point the 1996 is ready to drink, but there is enough sheer concentration here to support another 20-30 years of exceptional drinking. I am not sure I possess the vocabulary to describe just how captivating the 1996 is, but I do know this: If I had an opportunity to pick up a few well-stored bottles I would take it in a nanosecond. Readers holding the 1996 should be thrilled. The 1996 Pichon

Bid on this 3L-bottle of 2005 Grand Puy Ducasse, Pauillac (3L) in original wood. According to Robert Parker: "...this charming, precociously styled effort is still a sleeper of the vintage. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by a sweet bouquet of creamy oak, black cherries, and black currants, supple tannins, and a ripe, heady finish. It should drink well for 15+ years." (04/07) According to the Wine Spectator: "Some berry and cherry character. Medium- to full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a medium finish." (03/06) K&L's barrel tasting notes - 62% cabernet sauvignon and 38% merlot. Closed on nose. Big wine. Tannic but could be good. After being opened an hour, the fruit really comes through here. A great wine." (06/06) 90-93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep red-ruby. Full-blown aromas of raspberry liqueur, dark chocolate and leather. Large-scaled, chewy and rich but with a fine-grained texture. This is silky and fat but not heavy thanks to surprisingly fresh acidity. Flavors of blackberry, plum, tar, tobacco and earth are joined by an almost roasted note on the back end. Finishes impressively rich and long, with big but thoroughly ripe, granular tannins. Bid on this bottle of 1996 Domaine Joseph (Veronique) Drouhin Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru "Petits Monts" (92BH, (88-91RP)). Allen Meadows - Burghound: " A wonderfully stylish and elegant nose of spicy, pure and still quite fresh black and red fruits that display only traces of secondary development slide seamlessly into mineral-driven middle weight flavors that are somewhat nervous and quite fine while being underpinned by racy acidity and while this is mildly drying on the backend, it is by no means hard or astringent. The finish is focused, precise and nicely long. In sum, this is beautiful juice that is much more about refinement and elegance than power. Lemon oil, ash, smoke and petrol are some of the many nuances that inform a tightly-wound finish that never really opens up. Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 1975 Léoville-Barton, St-Julien (90RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "For a 1975 Medoc, this wine has received surprisingly consistent notes. While it has always revealed some of the severity and austerity of the vintage, it has consistently possessed more depth, sweetness of fruit, and a more expansive texture. There is a firm, tannic framework, but the wine is admirably concentrated, with a classic, herb, cassis, cedar, tobacco, and spicy-scented nose, full body, an impressive palate, a youthful personality, and a long finish. There are no signs of color or fruit degradation. With 1-2 hours of decanting, this wine can be drunk now; it promises to age for another 15+ years." (02/1996)

A rush of tannins arrives on the finish and it's unlikely that this will ever harmonize as there isn't enough fruit to see the structure through to full resolution. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The dense ruby/purple-colored 1999 Monbousquet exhibits a port-like bouquet of super-ripe black cherry and black currant fruit intermixed with scents of coffee, tobacco, and vanilla. Tipping the scales at a whopping 14% alcohol (extremely high for Bordeaux), this wine, which spends 18 months in 100% new oak and is bottled unfined and unfiltered, is a blend of 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. It was cropped at an amazingly low 30 hectoliters per hectare. It possesses an amazing texture, a mid-palate that you could get lost in, and a sensational 40-45 second finish. The exotic aromas, incredible texture, and abundant fruit are reminiscent of Pomerol's renowned micro-cuvee, Le Pin. The 1999 is even better from bottle than it was from cask. As with the corresponding 2011, there is a strikingly floral dimension that compliments – as well as an underlying stoniness that admirably sets off – the fruit, leading to a finish of glowing length. I am surprised that the 2011 manages to be slightly clearer and more refined than this 2010, but either is memorable and likely to be worth revisiting through 2028. 2016 Ducru-Beaucaillou, St-Julien (Pre-Arrival)

97-100 points Wine Spectator: "Offers a scintillating display of roasted apple wood, incense and warm ganache before the core of cassis, plum preserves and raspberry reduction starts to step forward. The finish, loaded with grip but remarkably polished, pulls everything together. A huge, undeniable wine, overt in style. (JM)" (4/2017) 96-99 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Showing how strong the Médoc is in 2016, the 2016 Ducru-Beaucaillou is going to rival the 2009 and 2010 (although it’s more in the style of 2010). Inky colored and loaded with classy notes of crème de cassis, liquid violets, blueberries, graphite and build ...Read More »

2015 Cheval Blanc, St-Émilion (Pre-Arrival)

100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "As many readers may know, 2015 was the first year since 1988 that Cheval Blanc did not produce its second wine, Petit Cheval. This said, parts of two of the Cheval Blanc blocks were not used at all—Plot 17A and the north part of Plot 10—which had problems with water availability during the dry spell, and the fruit was sold for bulk. Therefore, this vintage of the Grand Vin equates to roughly 90% of the total production, making it one of the most complete expressions of Cheval Blanc ever produced. Composed of 53% Merlot and 47% Cabernet Franc, the deep ga ...Read More »

2015 Domaine Trapet Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Capita" (Pre-Arrival)

94 points John Gilman: "Amongst this stellar lineup of 2015 premier crus chez Trapet, the Capita is the finest this year. The bouquet is deep, pure and nascently complex, delivering a refined, sappy blend of red and black cherries, raw cocoa, grilled beef, black minerality, woodsmoke and a gentle framing of spicy oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very intensely flavored, with a rock solid core, great mineral drive, ripe, chewy tannins and great length and grip on the still very primary finish. This is a powerful premier cru that is also seamless and flawlessl ...Read More »

2014 La Chablisienne Chablis Grand Cru "Vaudesir"

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2014 Chablis Grand Cru Vaudésir has a refined bouquet with green apple, nectarine and slate-like aromas, hints of undergrowth coming through with aeration, quite complex and absorbing in style. The palate is rounded on the entry, but the roundness and opulence of this Vaudésir is counterbalanced by the acidity. It is perhaps a little overworked and too phenolic on the finish, but it has the density and substance to age over a decade.(NM)" (8/2016)

2015 Domaine Perrot-Minot Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru (1.5L) (Previously $800)

93-96 points Vinous: "Bright dark red. At once pungent and delicate on the nose, offering highly nuanced aromas of fresh crushed raspberry, white pepper, crushed stone, iron and mint. Penetrating and extremely intense, but with the mint and white pepper notes giving the middle palate an impression of thrust with a magically light touch. Bone-dry and uncompromising, showing little easy sweetness, this brilliantly delineated Griottes will need extended aging to fill out and to absorb its acids and tannins. As backward as this wine is, it's distinctly feminine in a Chambolle way ...Read More »

1997 Couly Dutheil "Clos de l'Echo Crescendo" Chinon (1.5L)

Maison Couly-Dutheil is undeniably one of the finest estates of Chinon, with eighty acres of prime Chinon vineyards as well as seven hectacres of Saumur and Saumur Champigny. The estate's Chinon holdings are impressive indeed as they spread over three distinct Chinon terroirs: Sand and gravel along the Vienne River which produce light and fruit driven wines, siliceous slopes and plateaus which impart a certain finesse and elegance to Chinon; and finally clay and limestone slopes which produce Chinon's most serious and profound wines. The Domaine's maste... Read More »

2015 Rieussec, Sauternes (375ml) (Pre-Arrival)

97-98 points James Suckling: "The is a phenomenal wine with dried pineapple and pear aromas and flavors. Full, very sweet. Incredible depth and power. Super complex." (4/2016) 97 points Decanter: "Taking things to another dimension, this has power, spice, and a saffron-edged sexiness. Quince, roasted white peaches and bitter oranges are coupled with a biting seam of white pepper. There's such density here, and a soft, silky texture with a kick. (JA)" (11/2017) 97 points Vinous: "The 2015 Rieussec is gorgeous. Scents of apricot jam, honey, mint and wild flowers lift from the glass. Ayala "Majeur" Brut Rosé Champagne

92 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The NV Brut Rosé Majeur is also outstanding and offers a slightly exotic style in its floral, spicy, raspberry-scented aromas. This medium-bodied Champagne has sharp acidity, solid balance, and a clean, lengthy finish. Give bottles a year. The blend is 50% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir, and the balance Pinot Meunier, all of which spent three years on lees." (3/2018) 92 points Wine & Spirits: "A lovely fresh pinot noir, this is focused on the herbal, spicy imprint of the soil. Its red berry scents and pink peppercorn spice frame the earthiness, while nervous acidity brightens the flavor ...Read More »

2016 Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat Nuits-St.-Georges 1er Cru "Murgers" (Pre-Arrival)

91-93 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Reduction. The rich, full-bodied, naturally sweet and lightly mineral-suffused flavors possess good freshness and a seductive texture before culminating in an impressively complex, driving and palate staining finish. This is more refined than it usually is yet a wine that doesn't lack for power and punch. Drink: 2026+ *Outstanding*" (1/2018) 92 points John Gilman: "The 2016 Murgers chez Hudelot is an outstanding wine in the making, with the energy and sappy purity that is emblematic of the best 2016s that were untouched by the frost. 2015 Domaine du Pégaü "Cuvée da Capo" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Pre-Arrival)

96-99 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2015 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Da Capo is smoking good. Blackcurrants, lavender, garrigue, violets, cured meats and saddle leather all flow from this rich, unctuous, incredibly decadent 2015 that has sweet tannin, a huge mid-palate, and more concentration than just about every other wine in the vintage. (JebDunnuck.com)" (10/2017) 95-97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Slated to be bottled in January 2018, the 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee da Capo is an impressively endowed wine by any measure. 2015 Rene Rostaing "La Landonne" Côte-Rôtie (Pre-Arrival)

99 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Am I being stingy in only awarding Rostaing's 2015 Cote Rotie la Landonne 99+ points? This is a tremendous wine, showing immense richness and power without any apparent weight. Raspberries flood the palate in waves, accented by various spices in a wine that's intensely tannic yet never hard or astringent. Breathtaking stuff. (JC) 99+" (12/2017) 97 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2015 Côte Rôtie La Landonne is more tannic and structured, with the smoky, meaty, mineral-laced bouquet I always find in this terroir. 2015 Valandraud, St-Émilion 12-pack in OWC (Pre-Arrival)

This full-bodied, expansive, super concentrated 2015 is a hedonistic dream and has exceptional purity, balance, and equilibrium. While it offers pleasure today, it needs short-term cellaring and will keep for 20+ years." (11/2017) 98 points James Suckling: "Plenty of toasty oak and extract here. 2015 Ferraton Père et Fils "Les Grands Muriers" Cornas (Pre-Arrival)

Today, Ferraton Père & Fils produces a huge range of Rhône wines from Hermitage to St-Péray, with added help from long-time friend Michel Chapoutier who, in 1998, introduced new appellations to the business, as well as creating a plot-selection approach and biodynamic practices. 2016 Hubert Lamy St. Aubin 1er Cru "Clos du Meix" (Pre-Arrival)

90-92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Saint Aubin 1er Cru Clos du Meix comes from vines on hard limestone soil, and while it may not constitute one of Olivier Lamy's best-known labels, I was very impressed by this showing. It has a well-defined, wet limestone and slate-scented bouquet that translates the terroir extremely well. The palate is very well balanced with a keen line of acidity, very saline in the mouth with the saliva flowing after the wine is departed. You can already envisage this partnering and enhancing a heaped plate of fruits de mer!(NM)" (12/2017) 89-91 points Vinous: "(from hard limeston ...Read More »

Wonderfully honeyed, fat fruit flavors are complemented by cinnamon, clove and nutmeg. The sexy oak treatment gives lift to the wine. A bit youthfully aggressive but very long on the back end, showing vanillin oak and a bit of warmth. But this one offers superb potential. 2009 Domaine Jean Grivot Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru "Aux Boudots" (Pre-Arrival)

93 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "In 2009, the nose is more Vosne than Nuits with ample amounts of spice to the very ripe liqueur of cassis and red cherries that gives way to highly complex, intense and concentrated medium weight plus flavors that culminate in a rich, suave and superbly long finish. This is right at the limit of what I personally prefer in terms of ripeness but many will find this to be highly seductive." 2015 Domaine Louis Jadot Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

98 points Wine Enthusiast: "This grand vineyard is one of the jewels of Morey-St-Denis. The structure and density behind this vintage of the wine is generously impressive, with a dark, dry core and fine tannins. To balance this, the wine has weight, opulent fruit and acidity. The result, as it matures, will be a major wine that will age for many years. Drink from 2025. *Cellar Selection* (RV)" (12/2017) 92-94 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Notes of wood and menthol combine with those of red currant, dark raspberry and plenty of earth and game scents. (RV)" (4/2017) 92-93 points James Suckling: "A linear and pretty wine with plenty of blackberry aromas and flavors to complement a tight and chewy tannin structure. Medium to full body and a bright finish. More structured than the 2015." (4/2017) 91-93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 La Tour Carnet is a blend of 60% Merlot, 37% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc that was picked between 4 and 21 October. 2015 Bosquet des Papes "Chante le Merle" Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes

95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "I love the 2015 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Chante Le Merle Vieilles Vignes, and it's the most balanced and complete of this estate's 2015s. Garrigue, kirsch, spice, dried earth and garrigue nuances all flow to a full-bodied, supple, beautifully textured red that has classic aromas and flavors, polished, elegant tannin and a great finish. It's approachable today, yet will be even better with short-term cellaring and drink well for a decade or more.
