French Wine

When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its regions, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and occasionally as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a 100 lives. To understand and appreciate French wine, you only need to begin tasting them. Check out some of the top picks that our buyers have tracked down - several of these wines are imported directly from France.

Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2009 Clos Saint-Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes (94RP, 92ST, 91WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Similar in style to the 2011, yet with additional richness, the 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes boasts knockout aromas and flavors of blackberry liqueur, orange rind, sweet spice and crushed flowers to go with a full-bodied, rich, layered and sexy feel on the palate. A gorgeous effort that's hard to resist now, it will nevertheless have 15 years or more of evolution. (JD)" (08/2014)

2009 Doisy-Daëne, Sauternes (375ml)
Bid on this 6-half-bottle lot of 2009 Doisy-Daëne, Sauternes (375ml) (94RP, 93WS, 91WE). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Doisy-Daene was spectacular out of barrel, however it has never quite reached those ethereal heights in bottle. Perhaps this rich, generous vintage did not quite suit the crisp, tense style of Denis Dubourdieu’s Barsac? Compared to others in this blind tasting, it comes across as more muted on the nose with scents of beeswax, marmalade and lanolin, though the Sauvignon Blanc is very expressive. The palate is very well-balanced on the entry with crisp acidity cutting through the viscous texture. The finish is rounded in the mouth, offering attractive notes of lemon sherbet and orange essence. Everything is very "contained" at the moment, although the tension suggests that it should age well. I suspect this will need a decade before it really blossoms. Drink 2020-2040. 94+ (NM)" (02/2013)

2011 La Vieille Cure, Fronsac
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2011 La Vieille Cure, Fronsac (91RP, 90WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "An amazing effort in this vintage, La Vieille Cure has been one of the top 3 or 4 Fronsacs in most recent vintages. The 2011 is fashioned from 75% Merlot, 22% Cabernet Franc and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon. Many consumers will probably drink this wine entirely too young (and I have no problem with that), there is no doubt it has serious aging potential. A true revelation, this sleeper of the vintage is one of the finest wines money can buy. The dense ruby/purple color is followed by a sumptuous palate impression of silky black cherries and blackberries intermixed with wild strawberries. Opulent and rich with the abundant glycerin and lavish concentration concealing moderate tannins, this is a sensational effort in this challenging vintage. With nearly 14% natural alcohol as well as tremendous ripeness, it should drink well for 10+ years. This sleeper of the vintage merits consumer attentio

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2003 M. Chapoutier "La Mordorée" Côte-Rôtie (96RP, 94WS, 93ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The finest Cote Rotie Chapoutier has produced since 1991, the dense purple-hued 2003 Cote Rotie La Mordoree reveals a sumptuous perfume of new saddle leather, barbecued meats, herbs, black raspberries, and creme de cassis. This stunningly concentrated, full-bodied, rich wine takes Cote Rotie to a new quality level. Sadly, there are only 330 cases of this elixir. 1994 Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) "Réserve Spéciale," Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1994 Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) "Réserve Spéciale," Pauillac. Made by the producers of some of the world's best Bordeaux wines--Lafite-Rothschild, Duhart-Milon and Rieussec, among others. The Réserve Pauillac blends wine from estates in Pauillac, making a classic Bordeaux-styled wine that's approachable and affordable. Just like Lafite's other stepchild, Carruades de Lafite, the Réserve Spéciale has grown in stature as the price of the First Growth Lafite Rothschild has escalated out of the reach of most consumers.

Long, fine-grained tannins let an echo of iron linger. Not fully ripe, but everything has melded elegantly with time. (JM, Web-2014)"

1986 Léoville-Barton, St-Julien
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1986 Léoville-Barton, St-Julien (91RP, 90WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Still backward (frustratingly so), this wine shows a very dark ruby color with a hint of pink at the rim. The aromatics are beginning to emerge from just pure fruit-driven notes to secondary characteristics. Sweet earth, truffle, black currant, underbrush, and licorice emerge with coaxing. In the mouth, the wine is powerful, dense, with high tannin., impressive concentration, and a formidable, sort of old-style personality. The best 1986 Medocs are terrific wines, but have never been wines that show a lot of charm. Like so many of its siblings from the Medoc, one admires the wines more than actually enjoys them,. I still have high hopes that everything will come together. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2030. (RP)" (01/2003)

On the palate, this is rich and creamy, almost massive, but unfolds in waves, with fine structure and a long mineral finish. All the elements are there for a great future. I like the sense of harmony and there is a generosity to the finish that is beguiling." (01/2011)

1975 Petrus, Pomerol (375ml)
Bid on this half-bottle lot of 1975 Petrus, Pomerol (375ml) (98RP, 95ST, 93WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the most rustic and powerful Petrus of the last 25 years, this wine still has a murky garnet/plum/purple color, a gorgeous nose of overripe black cherries, mocha, caramel, chocolate, and a hint of iron and blood. Full-bodied, super-concentrated, with massive tannin and extract, this behemoth Petrus can be enjoyed but still seems another 5-10 years away from maturity. It is certainly a 50-70 year wine, with exquisite concentration and intensity, but seemingly the rough edges will no doubt be less appealing to those looking for pure seamlessness. Perhaps that will emerge with bottle age. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2040. (Bordeaux Book 4th Edition) (RP)" (01/2003)

Bid on this 6-half-bottle lot of 2009 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac (375ml) (98RP, 97JS, 96WE, 96WS, 93ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Performing even better from bottle than it did from barrel, this appears to be the finest Lynch Bages since the 2000, 1990 and 1989. According to the chateau, the 2009 has the highest level of polyphenols ever measured as well as high alcohol (nearly 13.5%). A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest largely Merlot with touches of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it is an expressive, voluptuously textured effort with unctuosity and powerful, juicy, succulent blackberry and black currant flavors, low acids, a layered, massive mouthfeel, but no sense of heaviness or fatigue. Bid on this 6-half-bottle lot of 2009 Pontet-Canet, Pauillac (375ml) (100RP, 98JS, 96ST, 96WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "An amazing wine in every sense, this classic, full-bodied Pauillac is the quintessential Pontet Canet from proprietor Alfred Tesseron, who continues to reduce yields and farms his vineyards biodynamically a rarity in Bordeaux. Black as a moonless night, the 2009 Pontet Canet offers up notes of incense, graphite, smoke, licorice, creme de cassis and blackberries. A wine of irrefutable purity, laser-like precision, colossal weight and richness, and sensational freshness, this is a tour de force in winemaking that is capable of lasting 50 or more years ... 1989 Domaine Raveneau Chablis "Les Clos" Grand Cru
Bid on this bottle of 1989 Domaine Raveneau Chablis "Les Clos" Grand Cru (95RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "1989 appears to be Raveneau's finest vintage since 1986 and 1978. The most powerful, intense, and fullest-bodied of all of Raveneau's wines is the 1989 Chablis-Les Clos. It combines the best characteristics of all the crus - the stones, the gunflint, the oranges, the butter, the acidity, with gobs of fruit, a spectacular density and extract, as well as a whoppingly long finish. What is so amazing about this offering from Raveneau is that while a muscular example of Chablis, it tastes refreshing and never heavy - a remarkable achievement. (RP)" (02/1992)

Pure, minerally aromas of blackberry, strawberry, raspberry and violet pastille. Dense, stony and sweet; this offers lovely vibrancy as well as a seductively round, seamless texture. Finishes with very suave tannins and terrific length. Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 1998 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe "La Crau" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (95RP, 94WE, 94WS, 91ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Between 1978 and 2007, this 1998 is the greatest Vieux Telegraphe that was produced. It has taken a good decade for this wine to shed its tannins and come out of a dormant, closed period. It has finally emerged, and notes of iodine, seaweed, black currants, incense, and sweet cherries as well as hot rocks jump from the glass of this full-bodied, powerful wine. It possesses considerable elegance and purity, along with loads of raspberries and incense, in a round, juicy, rich style that is just emerging from the closet. The wine is still youthful and a pre-adolescent in terms of its ultimate evolution. Approachable now, it will continue to evolve for another 15-20 years. Bravo! (RP)" (06/2010)

The toast hints this displayed early on have been completely integrated and now the nose is a mix of pure and seductively attractive honeysuckle and white flower aromas that merge seamlessly with gorgeous, round, strikingly powerful and wonderfully textured flavors that offer a fantastic combination of muscle, sweet extract, superb focus and outstanding length. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1999 Richebourg Grand Cru from Hudelot-Noëllat personifies the vineyard with some style. It has a stunning, pure, elegant and effortless nose that maybe expresses that essence of pinoté better than more than a dozen other Richebourg wines present at this tasting. Raspberry coulis, wild strawberry and cold stone soar from the glass with great focus. The palate is tensile, the red berry fruit laced with orange zest that lends vivacity and energy. To be banal, this is just a Richebourg so well crafted that you want to just drink it rather than intellectualize over its virtues. That's the sign of a great wine. (NM)" (11/2015)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2004 Vincent Dauvissat Chablis Grand Cru "Les Preuses" (93BH, 92ST, 91RP). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "(opened from personal storage). A maturing but still youthful nose of ripe, ultra pure and focused green fruit and oyster shell-infused nose that is almost laser-like in its precision and nuance that complements perfectly the rich, naturally sweet and unbelievably intense flavors that culminate in an explosively long but distinctly fine finish. This is akin to having a vinous bomb go off in your mouth as the bone dry backend just goes on and on with an energy and vibrancy that immediately declares that this is no ordinary grand cru. From the standpoint of maturity, it's still young though not forbidding and while it could be drunk now, I will allow the rest of my bottles to sleep for another 1 to 3 years before attacking them seriously. Lovely silky, open-knit wine with a distinctly high pitch to its white peach and floral flavors. Plenty of sucrosite here, but nicely buffered by harmonious acidity. Finishes with good dusty persistence. As Niellon can regulate the temperature in his new facility, he appears to be able to keep the high-pitched floral perfume of his wines more successfully than previously. (ST)" (09/2011)

1990 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1990 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac (94ST, 90JS). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright red with a pale rim. Knockout nose of aromatic herbs, strawberry, sweet spices and acacia flower; yet another wine strongly marked by its Cabernet Franc presence. Fresh and vibrant, this absolutely dances on the palate with strawberry, sour red cherry and raspberry flavors complicated by gunflint and herbs. High acidity provides great clarity and cut to the long, floral, smoothly tannic finish. This has improved considerably with bottle age. Harvested from September 18 through October 3, this Mouton offers amazing balance and fragrance. In 1990 Mouton was still using a heavy toast for its barriques, which resulted in a smoky quality in the wines that was considered by many to be just as typical of Mouton as its opulence. Mouthfilling but not at all heavy. Offers compelling intensity and sweetness of flavor and lovely verve. Finishes with classy, very fine tannins and superb palate-saturating sweetness of fruit. 2005 Domaine Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Bid on this bottle of 2005 Domaine Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru (95JS, 94BH, 93W&S). James Suckling: "My birthday celebration night in Hong Kong moved on from Moët & Chandon and Dom Pérignon 2000 to a 2005 Bonneau de Martray Corton-Charlemange, which is an old favorite of mine for great white Burgundy. I often say that great Corton-Charlemagne is a red wine masquerading as a white wine because it can be so structured and textured. This 2005 was certainly like that. Some say that Bonneau de Martray went down in quality in the 1990s but then came back in the 2000s. The 2005 that we drank was excellent quality. It was a tightly structured white with sliced apples, lemon meringue and an exquisite cream character. It was full body and silky-textured, showing a dense and beautiful palate. It still needs at least two or three years to open and show its true quality." (06/2016)

Bid on this 1-half-bottle lot of 1990 Domaine Faiveley Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru (375ml) (92RP, 91WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This firm offers a strong line-up of grands crus from the Cote de Nuits. The Mazis-Chambertin is even more savage and ferociously tannic, but potentially superior to the Clos de Vougeot. It possesses the darkest, most saturated ruby/purple color of any of the grands crus, as well as a fuller-bodied, more concentrated style. While the tannins are high, the wine appears to have the requisite depth of fruit to balance out the structure. This long, rich, intensely concentrated wine should be at its best by the late nineties and last into the second decade of the next century. (RP)" (10/1992)

Finishes with broad, palate-dusting tannins and lovely aromatic persistence. Very sexy already. I asked Grivot why he uses a good 20% more new oak than he did ten years ago. Dense and sappy; less powerful than the Mazis but intense, sappy and aromatic, with excellent lift from the pepper and spice elements. Made from a blend of 70% Grenache and 30% Mourvèdre that was raised mostly in demi-muids, it exhibits awesome notes of blackberry, licorice, smoked herbs, graphite and tinges of minerality. Bid on this bottle of 1990 Domaine Leroy Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru "Beaux Monts" (98RP, 95WS, 92BH). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Vosne-Romanee-Les Beaumonts is a more subtle, more classic example of a top premier cru Vosne-Romanee. It does not soar from the glass with the exotic, smoky, roasted character of the Les Brulees, but it does offer authoritative and persistent aromas of black fruits, herbs, underbrush, and sweet oak. While it displays exceptional concentration of flavor in the mouth, it is supported by higher levels of tannin and is a more structured, denser, richer wine than the Les Brulees. Since the tannins are more noticeable, it should be cellared for 7-8 years, and should last for 30 or more. This profound wine is one of the superstars of the vintage." (10/1992)

However, it made up for it on the palate and was more expansive and opulent, with full-bodied richness, terrific concentration and a surprising amount of tannic grip that came through on the blockbuster finish. The 2005 Château Climens just soars from the glass with layers of clear honey, marmalade, nectarine and minerals all beautifully carved. The palate is medium-bodied with fresh, vibrant honeyed fruit that builds and builds in the mouth in tandem with a killer line of acidity. This also explodes on the finish and there is real volume here for a 1er and just as the wine is on the verge of seeming a touch heavy, the acidity arrives with a real rush on the incredibly long finish to keep all the elements in perfect balance. Although the concentrated, dense tannins and big black fruit flavors are still there, it has lost the huge brooding presence of past vintages, and now has a veneer of sophistication with superripe fruit, plums and dark jam tastes. Whether this 1999 will age as well as older vintages remains to be seen, but it will certainly be ready to drink sooner. (RV)" (06/2002)

1999 Rene Rostaing Cote-Rotie
Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 1999 Rene Rostaing Cote-Rotie (92RP). 92 points Robert Parker: "The 1999 Cote Rotie Cuvee Classique (14,000 bottles produced) is a brilliant example that should age well for 15+ years. Its sexy concoction of jammy black fruits intermixed with violets, acacia flowers, cherry liqueur, and creme de cassis jumps from the glass. The wine is exotic and nearly port-like, with sweet levels of glycerin coating the mouth, low acidity, and fabulous concentration as well as purity. It is impossible to resist, but it will last for two decades." (04/01)

Bid on this magnum lot of 2009 Domaine Louis Carillon Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Perrières" (1.5L) (93RP, (89-92BH), 90ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Perrieres has a fine chalky nose with good delineation and lift: crushed stone, ripe green apples and a touch of passion fruit. The palate is well defined with a touch of lemongrass on the entry; very good weight in the mouth that builds nicely to a lovely, spicy finish that is so ebullient and vivacious that is smothers the mineralite that I am sure will come through with age. Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "(just finished its malo): Bright yellow. Pure but reticent nose hints at flowers and clove. Penetrating and firm-edged, showing bright acidity and a firm spine of minerality. Distinctly imploded on the palate, with an almost tannic quality to the flavors of ginger, pear skin and menthol. 2002 Domain Louis Jadot “Montrachet” Grand Cru
Bid on this bottle of 2002 Domain Louis Jadot “Montrachet” Grand Cru (95RP, 95ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2002 Montrachet was re-tasted in early February, 2004 immediately after bottling. It reveals a highly expressive nose of sap-laden rocks, spices, and ginger. On the palate, this medium to full-bodied, velvety-textured effort is seamless, rich, broad, and ample. Loads of spices, hazelnuts, cloves, pears, and honeyed minerals can be discerned in its complex, harmonious character. Its pure, lush personality and impressively bold flavors linger throughout its long, suave finish. Given that this wine had recently been subjected to filtration and the shock of being bottled, I have every confidence in the world that it will gain even more power, flesh, and length over the next 2-3 years. Projected maturity: 2008-2020. (PR)" (02/2004)

2004 Domaine Bouchard Père et Fils Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Bid on this bottle of 2004 Domaine Bouchard Père et Fils Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru (95ST, 93BH, 92WS). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Pale, bright color. A quintessence of Corton-Charlemagne dirt on the nose: stone fruits, lemon, iodine, ginger, minerals and mint, all complicated by a musky, leesy note that reminded me of a Coche-Dury wine. Then compellingly dense and penetrating in the mouth, with captivating, soil-driven flavors of raw pineapple, white peach, white flowers and crushed rock; a sulfidey complexity and a saline element add to the wine's spectacular subtle complexity. Hardly a blockbuster but conveys an impression of great solidity. This remarkably precise wine coats the palate with dusty stone and leaves behind a suggestion of honey. My sample at Bouchard in early June was painfully young and closed though obviously outstanding, but this bottle, tasted in New York in August, was spectacular. 95+" (10/2006)

Bid on this bottle of 2000 Domaine du Clos du Caillou "Réserve les Clos du Caillou" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (99RP, 96ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Possibly the wine of the vintage is the 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve Le Clos du Cailloux. I tasted this wine four times from bottle, and it has blown away some tough competition. A wealth of fruit, power, and balance, amazing purity, and a sumptuous, 65-second finish are the stuff of legends. As usual, it is a blend of 45% Grenache, 40% Mourvedre, and the rest Syrah as well as miscellaneous varietals. The Mourvedre must be picked incredibly ripe as there is never any of that grape's astringency or toughness. However, being an anti-oxidant varietal, I am sure this is a sign of how much aging potential these wines possess. This is an enormous, well-delineated, superb wine. Anticipated maturity: now-2020+. The unbelievably intense flavors are deep and strikingly transparent yet the level of dry extract this enjoys is nothing short of remarkable. A very concentrated, pure, dense wine of considerable finesse. Finishes very aromatic and long. Offers terrific aging potential. Girardin noted that there was no hydric stress here in 2004. Bid on this bottle of 2001 Les Cailloux (Lucien & Andre Brunel) "Cuvée Centenaire" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (96RP, 96ST, 93WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Cuvee Centenaire is produced from ancient vine (planted in 1889) Grenache (80% of the blend, along with 8% Syrah and 12% Mourvedre). The 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Centenaire is superior to the 2000, but slightly behind the 1998. This fabulous wine boasts a dense ruby/purple color as well as a provocative perfume of incense, black tea, plums, figs, and kirsch liqueur. As it sits in the glass, this full-bodied, dense 2001 offers up notes of pepper, smoke, and balsam wood. Rich and voluptuous with great length, massive body, and a structured, long, heady, tannic finish, its alcohol must be over 15%, but it is well concealed by the wine’s great concentration. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2020." (02/2004)

Possessing a thrillingly complex, mature feel, with full-bodied richness and a layered, textured and seamless mouthfeel, this puppy was singing, with loads of lavender, peppery herbs, game and dried flower-like aromas and flavors. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1998 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac (94W&S, 93ST, 91JS, 91WS). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Very deep saturated ruby. Archetypical Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated nose offers fresh blackcurrant, lead pencil and flowers complicated by strong spice notes. Bright and juicy on entry, with very pure flavors of dark berries, underbrush and dried herbs, then slightly austere and linear in the middle palate. Finishes with a lingering saline nuance and very good length. A very refined and impeccably balanced Mouton, but I would have liked a little bit more concentration and opulence for an even higher score. This classic Mouton possesses relatively high acidity and a solid tannic structure; it offers early accessibility but should age effortlessly for another 15 or 20 years. 93+ (ID)" (08/2011)

The intensity is almost painful and the pure impressive and while this has slightly better material than the Genevrières, it can't match it for sheer style. Bid on this bottle of 2007 Château Rayas "Réservé" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (98RP, 97ST, 93WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I think the Rayas 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape will turn out to eclipse the 2005. It is unequivocally the finest wine made here since Emmanuel Reynaud’s uncle, the late Jacques Reynaud, produced his brilliant 1995. This wine was just released this year, with the 2008 coming on the market in the next few months. The 2007 is a relatively dark ruby/purple-tinged wine, more intensely colored than most Rayas Chateauneufs tend to be, since they are made from 100% Grenache and color has never been one of their hallmarks. The extraordinarily youthful and still burgeoning aromatics of black raspberries, black cherries, truffles and licorice lead to a full-bodied, powerful Rayas with sweet tannin, adequate acidity, and an ethereal richness and unctuosity that delicately offers a sensual texture ... 2000 Margaux, Margaux
Bid on this bottle of 2000 Margaux, Margaux (100JS, 100RP, 98ST, 98W&S, 98WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Absolutely compelling in two tastings of this vintage, the 2000 Margaux is composed of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot. The extraordinary seductiveness, complex aromatics, and purity it exhibits lead me to believe it has reached its window of full maturity. Medium-bodied, with layers of concentration, stunning blue, red, and black fruits intermixed with spring flowers, a subtle dosage of new oak, and a distinctive personality that is elegant while at the same time powerful and substantial, this is a multi-dimensional wine that was extremely approachable and drinkable in both tastings I had of it. The color remains a healthy, even opaque bluish/purple, but there is no reason to hesitate to drink it. It should evolve for another 30-40 years, so there is no hurry either. (RP)" (06/2010)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2002 Bollinger R.D. Extra Brut Champagne (99JS, 97W&S, 96VN, 96WS, 94BH). James Suckling: "Super fresh, this is striking given the 10 years in the cellars; it has a fine citrus nose - plenty of lemon, grapefruit, yellow chalky notes, some lighter floral elements too. The palate is super dry (dosage at 3-4g) and there's a silky, sherbet-like texture, smooth, fine and long. The citrus flavours give way to the driving surging acidity, thunderous acidity, really driving and powerful. The finish twists very slowly through to light-toasted cashew fruit flavours, but lemon citrus prevails. This is thrilling Champagne. Disgorged 22nd October, 2013. Drink from 2016. " (05/2014)

2012 Domaine de Montille Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru "Aux Thorey"
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2012 Domaine de Montille Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru "Aux Thorey" ((92-94RP), (90-92BH), (90-92ST)). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2012 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Thorey comes from the domaine’s 0.73-hectare parcel. This vintage is 100% whole cluster and sees around 50% new oak. It has an earthy, mushroom and dried blood-scented bouquet that is very engaging and well-defined. The palate is firm and grippy on the entry. This is very concentrated with a fine bead of acidity, yet the grip is gentle and not imposing. The swagger demonstrated at this nascent stage suggests that this may evolve into one of Domaine de Montille’s finest 2012. (NM)" (12/2013)

Wine Spectator: " *#5 on Top 100 of 2008, Highly Recommended* This is dense and chewy, but not tiring to drink, thanks to fresh acidity and an edgy, gravelly feel that drives the blackberry, currant and sweet spice notes. The long finish has great briary grip, with notes of garrigue and hot stone checking in. Best from 2010 through 2030. (JM)" (04/2008)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A spectacular effort, especially for this challenging vintage, Olivier Bernard’s 2011 Domaine de Chevalier boasts a dense ruby/purple color as well as a big, sweet bouquet of subtle charcoal, graphite, black currants and black cherries. Rich and full-bodied with a multilayered mouthfeel and a long, complex, stunning finish, this is a profound example of a 2011 from a great terroir. Consume it over the next 20 years. This is not as concentrated as the best here but the balance is impeccable and there's a real sense of flair without being showy." (07/2007)

This is one of the most exciting young reds I have tasted in a long, long time. It shows intense aromas of berries, currants and minerals, with hints of mint. Full-bodied and packed with fruit and tannins, its long finish is refined and silky. A benchmark for the vintage. Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Blind, I would have identified this as a Chevalier as it is so incredibly linear and direct with minerality to burn plus simply fantastic precision and then tack on a finish that was so long that I could still taste it the next morning. It is also quite powerful, perhaps even more powerful than the Demoiselles and the flavors are a bit more opulent and sumptuous with slightly lower acidity. This is a complete wine, seamless, perfectly integrated, concentrated, complex and should develop over a decade and last for two or more. A Montrachet as it should be." (07/2002)

Reticent on the nose: tar, iodine, underbrush at first, but it's leading you down the wrong path because some plush blueberry and damson fruits begin to emerge with aeration. Ripe, full-bodied palate that is plush in style but with good clarity and poise, a sense of purite that is very attractive, leading to a focused finish. Excellent." (01/2010)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A wine I’ve had more than a case of, sometimes with irregular results, the 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes was drinking about as good as it gets on this occasion. As usual, it’s made in a deeper, richer style than the Chaupin and offers thrilling texture, a smoking mid-palate and nothing but gorgeous Grenache fruit on the finish. The saturated purple-colored 1999 displays a dense, flamboyant bouquet of roasted herbs, cedar, cassis, new saddle leather, and espresso. Brilliant aromas of cassis, black raspberry, bitter chocolate, minerals, licorice and spicy oak. Superripe and extremely dense, yet almost magically fresh and delineated thanks to firm acidity and pungent underlying minerality. Possesses a deep core of spice that goes beyond mere oak. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Aromatically demure, reluctantly revealing a sweet, black mass, the dense, hugely concentrated 2002 Nuits-St.-Georges Les Pruliers is a big, bold, masculine wine. Licorice, asphalt, candied blackberries and cherries can be detected in this medium to full-bodied behemoth’s personality. Of the 2004 Domaine William Fevre Chablis "Les Clos" Grand Cru ,Robert Parker's Wine Advocate writes: "The star of this extraordinary line-up is Domaine William Fevre’s show-stopping 2004 Chablis Les Clos (domaine). Its creamed stone aromatics are followed by a bold, muscular, powerful character. Very dry, taut and reserved yet already rich and mouthfilling, with the ripe fruit notes perfectly supported by a flavor of liquid stone. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The extraordinary 1998 Cote Rotie Chateau d'Ampuis is more structured, powerful, and concentrated than the 1997. My ratings for the component parts ranged from a low of 90-92 for La Grande Plantee, to a high of 94-96 for La Pommiere and Pavillon Rouge. All revealed huge colors, earthy, smoky noses with bacon fat and black currants, and various degrees of tannin. This is unquestionably a vintage for patient connoisseurs as it requires cellaring. A Syrah masterpiece, this opaque purple-colored offering beautifully juxtaposes its muscle, power, and depth with considerable elegance and precision. The tannin is sweet, the acidity adequate, and the wine layered, majestically rich, full-bodied, and moderately tannic. It can be drunk now, but 3-4 years of cellaring will be beneficial. It is still light gold in color, with an expansive bouquet of new oak, oranges, pineapples, and other tropical fruits. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Beaucastel has been on a terrific qualitative roll over the last four vintages, and the 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape (which Francois Perrin feels is similar to the 1990, although I don’t see that as of yet) is a 15,000-case blend of 30% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah, 10% Counoise, and the balance split among the other permitted varietals of the appellation. This inky/ruby/purple-colored cuvee offers a classic Beaucastel bouquet of new saddle leather, cigar smoke, roasted herbs, black truffles, underbrush, and blackberry as well as cherry fruit. It is a superb, earthy expression of this Mourvedre-dominated cuvee. Full-bodied and powerful, it will undoubtedly close down over the next several years, not to re-emerge for 7-8 years. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2025. (RP)" (02/2004)

Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 1989 Huet "Le Mont - Premiere Trie" Vouvray Moelleux (OWC - 99RP) in original wood. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Luminous golden-yellow in color, the ginger-flavored 1989 Vouvray Le Mont Moelleux Première Trie shows the subtle and herbal-flavored, coolish and aristocratic bouquet typical for this lieu-dit, which is adjacent to the Loire with its green-tinged marl and silex soils. Very clear and delicate yet intense and concentrated fruit aromas, along with chamomile and mineral flavors on the nose, migrate to an extremely finesse-full and highly elegant palate with sweet peach aromas and a great and intense, stimulatingly pure, precise and salty but most of all endless finish ... 2006 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru "Cailles"
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2006 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru "Cailles" ((90-93BH), 93RP, 92ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2006 Nuits-St.-Georges Les Cailles introduces another level of complexity, focus, and concentration from the premier cru bottlings that preceded it in this Chevillon line-up, paralleling the jump in price with which it is assocated. Enveloping yet bright ripe black currant and black raspberry mingle with toasted pecan, cocoa powder, and vanilla. A high-toned, distilled dimension to the fruit adds considerable allure, and a diverse yet largely ineffable range of stony and crystalline mineral suggestions offers counterpoint in the dynamic dialog that ensues, continuing into a long, savory, yet faintly bitter and decidedly chalky finish. I would wait a couple of years and then plan to enjoy this for 6-8 more. (DS)" (12/2009)

1986 Talbot, St-Julien
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1986 Talbot, St-Julien (96RP, 91WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A fabulous wine, and one of the two greatest Talbots of the last 50 years, this wine still has a very murky garnet/plum/purple color and a spectacular nose of sweet creme de cassis intermixed with freshly ground pepper, melted road tar, herbes de Provence, and beef blood. It is followed by an enormously concentrated wine of full body, layers of concentration and sweet tannin. The wine seems to be just hitting its plateau of maturity, where it should last for at least 10-15 more years. A prodigious Talbot. Anticipated maturity: Now-2020. (RP)" (01/2003)

2004 Jacquesson "Champs Cain" Avize Brut Champagne
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2004 Jacquesson "Champs Cain" Avize Brut Champagne (96RP, 95VN, 93ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "From vines planted in 1962, the single-vineyard Jacquesson 2004 Extra Brut Avize Champ Cain leads with an utterly remarkable nose. A greenhouse-like profusion of leafing and flowering things is imposed over sea breeze, with jasmine; musky narcissus; nose-prickling spice as if from some exotic orchid; iodine-tinged toasted shrimp shells; and toasted grain all pungently present and anticipating the elusive complexity delivered on a caressingly polished yet consummately refreshing and almost ethereally delicate palate. Over time, the sense of creaminess and the refinement of bubbles became more evident, along with a contrasting impression of enhanced piquancy, suggesting hops and lentil sprouts, all in the context of remarkable poise and transparency to nuance ... 1989 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1989 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac (98JS, 96WS, 90RP). James Suckling: "Freshly picked blackberries turn into minty dark chocolate and oozing caramel with domineering eucalyptus on the nose. It becomes yet more complex on the palate thanks to layers upon layers of spices and sage plus fat and rounded tannins. There's a long finish with a bitter aftertaste, suggesting this could do with another 10 years or more of bottle aging. Of the 1999 Tardieu-Laurent St. Joseph Vielles Vignes,Robert Parker's Wine Advocate writes: "While the 2000 Tardieu-Laurent offerings are excellent for the vintage, they are significantly less concentrated and textured compared to the awesome 1999s. The 1999s which were given fabulous ratings from barrel, were not tasted from bottle. However, given part experience with bottled Tardieu-Laurent wines, they are undoutedly as good as I predicted from cask. 2012 Alphonse Mellot "Les Romains" Sancerre

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Sourced from vines plated in 1951 on partly limestone, partly silex soils the dense, firmly structured 2012 Sancerre Les Romains has an intense yellow color and a rich nose with an amalgam of ripe (and slightly oxidized) fruit, crushed rocks, fresh citrus flavors, yeast, (new) oak, nut oil, hazelnut, yogurt and chalk. On the palate all these impressions become tactile and tastable in a rich, creamy textured Sancerre with a demanding minerality and a finish that reminds of vins jaunes of the Jura region. Although quite inaccessible, this is a profund, powerful and extremely salty Sauvignon of great expression and complexity. Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A highly aromatic and beautifully complex nose features discreet but not invisible oak influence along with lovely floral hints to the fresh, ripe and mature dark berry fruit and earth suffused aromas. There is good richness and detail to the lightly mineral-driven middle weight flavors that possess a fine sense of energy but not the depth or sophistication displayed on the nose, all wrapped in a solidly long finish. This is one of those wines that has a truly distinguished nose but an average plus amount of depth and length so some may like this more than I do. To be sure, this is a very pretty wine but it's not special in the context of what Leroy typically does with it. In terms of drinkability for my taste this has reached its peak though it should be capable of holding at this plateau for another decade." (04/2014)

Wine Enthusiast: " * Cellar Selection * The Vigne de l’Enfant Jésus is a 10-acre parcel in the heart of the Grèves vineyard that once belonged to Carmelite nuns. This vintage, while marked by acidity and soft fruit, does have a firm edge of dark tannins, filled out with plum and red cherry flavors. " (12/2010)

Aromas of dark berry liqueur and bitter chocolate are sappy and liqueur-like but with outstanding energy. Quite full and powerful for a wine from this cellar, with outstanding sweetness and breadth to its flavors of blackberry, chocolate and roast coffee. Downright explosive on the finish, the noble tannins totally buffered by a wave of fruit." (04/2008)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Chablis Bougros Cote Bougerots is made from a steep, south-facing parcel in Bougros. It shows fabulous intensity and depth in its round, generous fruit. This really fills out on the mid-palate and finish. The radiance of the fruit makes this one of the more approachable 2009 grand crus for near and mid-term drinking, although it may age quite a bit longer based on the sheer density of its fruit. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A sleeper of the vintage, the 2008 Pichon Longueville Baron is one of the densest, most concentrated wines of Pauillac in 2008. An inky/purple color is followed by aromas and flavors of creme de cassis, blackberries, charcoal, coffee and licorice. Reduced, slightly decadent aromas of strawberry, spices, underbrush and game: this could only be Burgundy! Seriously silky, pliant and glyceral, with a lightly liqueur-like quality to the plush flavors of red fruits and spices. Quite sweet on entry, then more restrained on the back half. Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2006 Domaine J-F Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru "Les Fuées" (92RP, 92ST, 91BH). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Peat, black tea, game, mint, crushed stone, and dark berry aromas rise in at once sinister and enticing profusion from the glass of Mugnier's 2006 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuees. Corresponding low-toned complexity characterizes the opulently-textured and caressing, bittersweet palate. Stony minerality proves the most tenaciously aspect of this dark beauty's long, soothing, yet almost brooding finish. It sent chills back up my spine just transcribing my tasting note and recreating this wine's uncanny, hard-to-describe character. I suspect it will be worth following for ten or a dozen years, probably longer. The track record at this address is more than merely convincing. (DS)" (12/2009)

This full-bodied classic boasts a dense purple color as well as a superb nose of graphite, creme de cassis, forest floor, licorice and a hint of truffles, low acidity, and extravagant richness. Its opaque ruby/purple color is followed by aromas of graphite, barbecue smoke, blackberries and black currants. The full-bodied, textured 2008 Saint-Pierre reveals a skyscraper-like mouthfeel along with tremendous viscosity and unctuosity. Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2012 Domaine Billaud-Simon Chablis "Preuses" Grand Cru (93VN). Vinous: "A totally elusive wine, the 2012 Chablis Les Preuses is playing its cards close to the vest. A brilliant, energetic Chablis, the Preuses shows considerable textural depth, but is otherwise not terribly expressive. Hints of lime, grapefruit and crushed rocks emerge over time, but only with great reluctance. A hint of spice suggests the Preuses saw oak, but it was in fact done entirely in steel. Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2003 Bois de Boursan "Cuvée Felix" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (95RP, 94WS, 92ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2003 Domaine Bois de Boursan Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee des Felix is superb. Showing a mature, yet still lively and fruit-driven profile of sweet currants, saddle leather, truffle, and garrigue, it stays beautifully rich and seductive on the palate, with layers of sweet fruit, no hard edges and a great finish. Certainly a ripe vintage, yet everything is perfectly proportioned, the tannins are sweet and it is a joy to drink. A blend of 65% Grenache and the balance a mix of Mourvedre and Syrah, from 90-year-old vines, it held up beautifully with air and is a raging success in the vintage. It can be consumed now or over the coming 5-8 years or more. (JD)" (06/2013)

Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2012 Domaine Billaud-Simon "Vaudesir" Chablis Grand Cru (93ST, 92RP, 92VN). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "(Bernard Billaud began aging this wine in 100% used futs as of vintage 2011): Pale yellow. Musky aromas of mirabelle, toasted brioche, lemon, rose petal and spices. Densely packed and youthfully closed, even austere, but hints at lovely high notes of jasmine and fleur de sel. Very unforthcoming on the spicy back end and in need of seven or eight years in the cellar. But long on potential. (I tasted a bottle of the 2007 Vaudesir, done entire in cuve, and was seduced by its saline, sake-like aromas and silky texture. Bid on this 12-bottle lot of 2011 Domaine les Pallières "Terrasse du Diable" Gigondas (93ST, (90-92RP), 90WS). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Vivid ruby. Heady scents of candied cherry, raspberry preserves, anise and potpourri. Shows a darker profile in the mouth, offering palate-staining blackberry and bitter cherry flavors and a strong floral quality. Picks up smokiness with air and finishes with superb focus and length and youthful tannic grip. No question that this is one of the best wines I tasted from Gigondas this year. (ST)" (01/2014)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Up with the 2007 and 2001, the sensational 2010 Gigondas Prestige des Hautes Garrigues is a full-bodied, incredibly rich, yet pure and balanced Gigondas that offers off-the-hook notes of graphite, creme de cassis, licorice and roasted herb aromas and flavors. It's still a baby and needs to be forgotten for 3-4 years, but it will have 2-3 decades of overall longevity. It could be a candidate for perfection at maturity.(JD)" (10/2016)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The inky purple-colored 2013 Côte Rôtie Champon's (aged in 30% new French oak) offers classic 2013 characteristics in its fresh, crisp notes of graphite, ground pepper, violets and underbrush. Medium-bodied, pretty, focused and with fine tannin, it lacks some back-end oomph, but opens up nicely with air, has solid purity of fruit, and plenty of elegance and character. Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2012 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru "Bousselots" ((89-91BH)). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "There is a gentle touch of wood spice to the very fresh, cool and pure nose that offers up notes of various red berries and a floral hint. There is good detail and a beguiling vibrancy to the saline and intense medium-bodied flavors that possess a firm and solidly persistent finish. If this can add a bit of depth during the course of its evolution it could merit the upper end of my projected range." (01/2014)

Allen Meadows - Burghound: "***Don't Miss!*** This also displays an abundance of classic Chablis character with iodine, tidal pool and ripe green fruit aromas that precede dense, muscular and overtly powerful flavors that culminate in a saline-infused and impressively persistent finish where a touch of wood surfaces. As Bougros typically is, this is a big wine with almost painful intensity. While this slightly smoky effort isn't particularly refined, it is certainly dramatic and imposing." (09/2012)

In a word, terrific and this level of refinement is rare." (10/2010)

Bid on this bottle of 2000 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac (97WE, 96RP, 95ST, 93JS, 93WS). Wine Enthusiast: "With its distinctive antique bottle and gold etched label dominated by a sheep, this is definitely a move away from classic Bordeaux bottling. It is good that the wine can support the presentation. The fruit is so ripe, it almost tastes of raisins, but that sweetness is finely balanced by the dry tannins and concentrated texture. Bid on this magnum lot of 2010 Domaine Joseph Drouhin Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru (1.5L) ((93-95BH)). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Along with the Amoureuses and Musigny this possesses the most impressive aromatic profile in the entire range with its spicy, pure, elegant and highly complex liqueur of red and black cherry scents that evidence a top note of menthol. The suave and incredibly seductive flavors ooze a subtle natural sweetness yet underneath all of this youthful charm lurks a firm but ripe tannic spine that focuses the long and mouth coating finish. I'm not sure why but of all the wines in the extensive Drouhin portfolio, the Grands Echézeaux seems to have made the most progress in recent years and it now consistently ranks with the very best here." Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2009 Domaine de Montille Pommard 1er Cru "Pézerolles" ((91-93BH), 93RP, 91ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Pommard Les Pezerolles is rich, round and seductive. Layers of fruit caress the palate in this enveloping, textured Burgundy. There is plenty of intensity in the glass. Hints of hard candy and licorice wrap around the finish. The Pezerolles was made with 100% destemmed fruit. Although I like the wine’s frank immediacy, I also think it will age gracefully. (AG)" (04/2012)

Bid on this 12-bottle lot of 2008 Pavie-Decesse, St-Emilion (OWC - 94JS, 94RP, 92ST, 92WS) in original wood. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Another top-notch effort, the 2008 is a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc produced from yields of 30 hectoliters per hectare. It reached 14% natural alcohol, no doubt because of the extremely late harvest. A deep purple color is accompanied by massive notes of blackberries, incense, fruitcake, camphor and toasty oak intermixed with a crushed chalk-like minerality (a hallmark of this vineyard). The wine has softened considerably in bottle, and while it seems more structured than the 2010, it reveals a degree of accessibility. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2035. 94+ Points (RP)" (05/2011)

Densely packed, juicy and sweet, with excellent inner-mouth energy to the black raspberry and mineral flavors complicated by sexy smoky oak. Lovely ripeness and vinosity here. Finishes with substantial firm tannins that will support a couple decades of graceful evolution in bottle. 2007 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2007 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape (99RP, 97WS, 95ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the top wines in this incredible vintage is Avril's 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape, which is the normal blend of 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah and the rest of mix of permitted varieties. Brought up all in older foudre, it's a blockbuster, almost over-the-top, effort that gives up notes of kirsch, incense, dried flowers, spice and pepper. Deep, full-bodied, massively concentrated, unctuous and downright sexy ... (JD)" (09/2015)
