French Wine

When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its regions, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and occasionally as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a 100 lives. To understand and appreciate French wine, you only need to begin tasting them. Check out some of the top picks that our buyers have tracked down - several of these wines are imported directly from France.

1975 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1975 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac (95JS, 90RP). James Suckling: "I absolutely love the nose of licorice, minerals, black currants, and berries. Full and slightly hard and acidic, but I could smell it all night. It softens and turns velvety and dusty on the finish with lots of fruit. Why wait on this? Served from imperial bottle." (01/2011)

2005 Joseph Drouhin Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2005 Joseph Drouhin Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru (94BH, 92RP, 90WS). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "This is very ripe, indeed to the point where there are mocha and ripe but not roasted plum notes as well as hints of menthol, warm earth and wood spice with superbly dense, powerful and exceptionally rich flavors underpinned by suave tannins and the classic touch of youthful austerity on the finish which is partially buffered by a hint of sweetness. This is a big, impressive and notably ripe wine yet there is good focus and plenty of muscle without being rustic or foursquare." (04/2007)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2010 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis-Vaudésir Grand Cru ((92-95BH), 94RP, 94ST). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "*Don't miss!* A riper yet almost equally elegant nose features extract of white and yellow orchard fruit, sea breeze and pungent stone notes. Size-wise, this is between the Bougros and the Valmur with impressively dense and powerful flavors that coat the palate with dry extract that also buffers the firm acid spine on the hugely complex and energetic finish. Despite the punch and weight, this is relatively fine and I quite like the silky texture." (10/2011)

Allen Meadows - Burghound: "The recent mise has not troubled this either as the nose is wonderfully expressive, rich and classy, leading to concentrated, dense, pure, textured and beautifully detailed and precise flavors that ooze minerality and sap on the wonderfully long finish. This is very powerful for a Beaune 1er and it will be capable of aging for two decades, perhaps longer." (04/2004)

2000 Branaire-Ducru, St-Julien
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2000 Branaire-Ducru, St-Julien (94RP, 92ST, 92WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A beautiful wine from Branaire, the 2000 is close to full maturity, and should offer plenty of pleasure over the next 15-20 years. Its deep ruby/purple hue is accompanied by scents of boysenberries, black currants, and spring flowers. This medium to full-bodied, pure St.-Julien hits the palate with authority, displaying silky tannins as well as wonderful richness, depth, and texture." (06/2010)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2010 Canon-La-Gaffelière, St-Emilion (96WS, 95RP, 95WE, 92ST). Wine Spectator: " *Ranked #2 on Top 100 Wines of 2013* This takes the power of the vintage and puts it in its pocket for later, preferring instead to let mouthwatering briar, loganberry, mulberry and blackberry fruit strut its way forward, enlivened with roasted wood spice and supported by suavely but thoroughly embedded iron-tinged structure. Should cruise for two decades. Best from 2016 through 2035." (03/2013)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A beautiful wine and one of my favorites from this estate, this blend of nearly two-thirds Cabernet Sauvignon and one-third Merlot is aging impressively. Dense ruby/purple in color, with creme de cassis, charcoal, and sweet leathery and chocolatey notes intermixed with the classic Pauillac cedar and spice box, the wine is medium to full-bodied, fleshy, with sweet tannin and a long finish. 2005 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2005 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape (98WS, 95RP, 95ST). Wine Spectator: "**#1 in Top 100 Wines of 2007 & Collectibles designation** Really tight now, but packed with dark fig, currant, espresso, licorice and chocolate notes. Superfleshy but seriously structured, there's layer after layer of sweet spice, fruit and minerality pumping through the finish, with lots of latent depth and power. Far more backward than the 2003 or 2004 on release, but since this red typically puts on weight as it ages, it should be a monster--à la the 1990--when it reaches its peak." (12/2007)

1989 La Mission Haut-Brion, Pessac-Léognan
Bid on this bottle of 1989 La Mission Haut-Brion, Pessac-Léognan (100RP, 97ST, 96WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Both La Mission-Haut-Brion and Haut-Brion hit home runs in this vintage, which did not produce as many profound wines as the Bordeaux publicity machine suggested. 1989, the 200th anniversary of the French revolution, was an incredibly hot year (surpassed only by 1990 and 2003). Even from barrel the seamless 1989 La Mission revealed a special elixir aspect, tasting like it had been designed by Chanel. It still possesses a blue/purple color with only a hint of garnet creeping in, and the explosive aromatics offer up notes of licorice, creme de cassis, blueberry liqueur, smoky barbecue meats, truffles and graphite. If that’s not enough to get one salivating, the palate has never disappointed either. Full-bodied with extraordinary opulence as well as sweet, well-integrated, velvety tannins, this fresh, lively, blockbuster La Mission appears to be one of those rare wines tha

The penetrating fragrance of cedar, chestnuts, minerals, and rich fruit is a hallmark of this wine. Powerful, dense, rich, and tannic, as well as medium to full-bodied, with awesome extraction of fruit, this Lafite has immense potential. (Bordeaux Book, 3rd Edition)" (01/1998)

Black cherry, rose petal, licorice and herbs on the nose. Sappier than the Morey 1 er Cru, with lovely mineral lift giving energy and inner-mouth perfume to the very ripe, succulent palate. At once fleshy and fresh, in the style of the better 2009s. " (01/2011)

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "(I tasted a pre-bottling sample): Bright yellow. Sexy aromas of peach, spices, minerals and nut oil. Densely packed and powerful but a bit perturbed in its current form, with a recent SO2 addition accentuating the wine's acidity. Subtle notes of white pepper and wild herbs emerge with air to complicate the white peach and mineral flavors. Very juicy wine with superb depth and inner-mouth tension. 2010 Domaine des Chezeaux (Ponsot) Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru (1.5L)
Bid on this 3-magnum lot of 2010 Domaine des Chezeaux (Ponsot) Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru (1.5L). This wine is the same as that sold under the Ponsot label, except for the paper sticker on the bottle. It even has his proprietary glass and comes from the same 100+ year-old vines, as well as being vinified in the same cellar. Oh, and the price—a fraction of that under Ponsot's own label. Such are the joys of share-cropping. The Ponsot wine received 92-95 points and praise from Allen Meadows' Burghound: "An ultra-elegant and exceptionally pure nose of wild raspberries and both red and black currants introduces seductively textured and silky middle weight flavors that are utterly delicious....This should be great in time as it has everything that it needs." The fresh, intense and notably sweet flavors possess excellent intensity and vibrancy before culminating in a generous and mouth coating finish that displays real verve. Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A restrained, elegant and ultra-pure nose of honeysuckle, white peach, pear and soft green apple aromas gives way to wonderfully refined and equally pure flavors that display glimpses of a fine minerality on the intense and impeccably well-balanced finish that delivers sneaky length because just when you think that it's gone, it reappears. This doesn't wow you with power or punch or even intensity; instead, it's the harmony and completeness that make this so special. The rich, powerful and muscular full-bodied flavors ooze with dry extract that imparts an opulent mouth feel to the attractively precise and borderline painfully intense finish. This is exceptionally backwards and just like the nose, the palate impression is not as fine but this is both bigger and longer. Impressive." (06/2012)

There is good richness to the round and seductively textured flavors that exude a fine minerality that delivers outstanding length on the understated and impeccably well-balanced finish that displays plenty of the austerity for which young Chambertin is justifiably well-known." 1970 Latour, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1970 Latour, Pauillac (96RP, 94JS, 91WS, 90ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Latour ’70 can be such a variable beast. This is certainly one of the better, more representative bottles. Deep garnet in colour, nice limpidity in the glass. It has a beautiful nose that to be honest, sweeps aside the respectable Domaine de Chevalier ’70 poured alongside, like a lord dismissing his servant with a swish of his hand. Graphite, wild black fruit, freshly rolled tobacco and a faint hint of truffle. The palate is medium-bodied and after forty years, still quite austere but the balance is nailed. Masculine and foursquare, a Latour with a lot of horsepower…but not necessarily revving in top gear…at least not after four decades. Lovely cedar and mint on the long, long finish. Wonderful....Tasted April 2010. (Neil Martin--Wine Journal)" (11/2010)

There is impressive concentration to the serious and brooding medium weight flavors that display a subtle minerality on the firm, intense and somewhat rustic finish. This massive, extraordinarily rich, unctuously textured wine may be the most concentrated effort produced to date, although the 2000, 2005 and 2010 are nearly as prodigious. 2006 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2006 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape (98RP, 95ST, 95WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape is one of the two or three candidates for the wine of the vintage. An extraordinarily great wine, the 2006 is far superior to the 2005, which was amazing, and while made in a different style, is as great as the 2003, and such legends as 1990 and 1978. Fashioned from a minuscule 21 hectoliters per hectare, and tipping the scales at 15.2% natural alcohol, the 2006 boasts a dense ruby/purple color to the rim, in addition to an extraordinary bouquet of melted licorice, spring flowers, raspberries, black currants, spice box, and earth. In the mouth, it is utterly profound – full-bodied and multidimensional with astonishing purity, length, equilibrium, and intensity. This is a superb vintage for the Avrils, and Vincent deserves huge accolades for producing a wine of such incredible intensity and complexity. Think of Clos des Papes as a Chateaune

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Evolving beautifully, the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de La Reine des Bois has shed some of its crazy tannin and is showing a more layered, voluptuous profile. Possessing beautiful kirsch, blackberry, candied licorice, flowers and lavender, it offers knockout richness and decadence to go with brilliant purity of fruit, superb concentration, and a full-bodied, layered mouthfeel. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape is probably one of the strongest “regular” efforts I have ever tasted from Sabon. This dense purple blend of 75 to 80% Grenache and the rest Mourvedre and Syrah, aged in truncated wood cuves and foudres, has a beautiful, sweet nose of black cherry jam intermixed with roasted herbs, black currants, forest floor and a hint of charcoal. 2006 Frederic Esmonin Chambertin Clos de Beze
Bid on this 9-bottle lot of 2006 Frederic Esmonin Chambertin Clos de Beze. From the importer: "Esmonin is becoming one of the most consistent, high quality producers in Gevrey. They are now using a new bladder-press and have excellent control over the amount of pressure exerted on the grapes, which are picked only when they have reached ideal ripeness. After a short cold maceration gives the wines an extra dimension of fruit, they are aged in carefully selected French oak barrels of Allier and Nevers forest wood made by Radoux and Berthomieu, two of the very best coopers. Wines are aged in barrels of varying age and toast and then blended in order to achieve optimum balance and complexity." Frederic Esmonin on the 2006 Vintage: "Yields were “about the same as in 2005 with approximately a 10% loss due to hail. Sugars ranged from 12 to 13% and Burgundy lovers will find much to like as the wines are supple, round, approachable and fresh, indeed very terroir in character.” (Burghound, Jan

There is excellent detail to the tautly muscular and firm yet reasonably refined broad-shouldered flavors that possess superb length. The amount of mid-palate sap is genuinely remarkable and this will permit early accessibility yet it will be capable of aging effortlessly. An impressive effort." (01/11) 91 Tanzer: "Bright, deep red. Pure but reticent aromas of raspberry, mocha, graphite and musky spices. This is a seriously impressive effort and a legitimate candidate for the Charmes of the vintage; note however that patience will be required. Today the aromas and flavors are not at all developed, rather the wine is really all about textural elegance and finesse, and there is plenty of that here. A huge, explosive finish rounds things out in style. The Batard is a wine of contrasts. At times it is quite bold and extroverted, at others it possesses admirable restraint. Allen Meadows - Burghound: "An exceptionally attractive and impressively complex white flower, spice and crushed herb aromas are trimmed in noticeable wood toast and lead to rich, nicely powerful and gorgeously detailed flavors of equally impressive depth and excellent finishing persistence. This is a really lovely if just shy of truly compelling Bâtard that is drinking well now though will continue to hold without difficulty in this format, indeed it should be capable of holding for another 20 years. Tasted twice with consistent notes." (07/2008)

Sexy aromas of redcurrant, strawberry and smoked meat. Chewy, firmly built and rather backward, with a saline quality to the spice and mineral flavors. Sappy and fine-grained, with a subtle sweetness leavened by minerality. Impressively perfumed for the vintage. Finishes aromatic and long, with fine tannins belying the wine's solid underlying structure. (ST)" (01/2011)

1986 Margaux, Margaux
Bid on this bottle of 1986 Margaux, Margaux (98AG, 98RP, 93WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A magnificent example of Chateau Margaux and one of the most tannic, backward Margauxs of the last 50 years, the 1986 continues to evolve at a glacial pace. The color is still a dense ruby/purple with just a hint of lightening at the rim. With several hours of aeration, the aromatics become striking, with notes of smoke, toast, creme de cassis, mineral, and white flowers. Very full-bodied, with high but sweet tannin, great purity, and a very masculine, full-bodied style, this wine should prove nearly immortal in terms of its aging potential. It is beginning to budge from its infantile stage and approach adolescence. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2050. Last tasted, 12/02. (RP)" (01/2003)

1966 Grand-Puy-Lacoste, Pauillac
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1966 Grand-Puy-Lacoste, Pauillac. In his book "Vintage Wine," critic Michael Broadbent wrote of the 1966 Grand-Puy-Lacoste: "This always is a long-distance runner, and a château whose wine I now buy every vintage. My first taste of the '66 was a pleasant, piquant Justerini & Brooks' bottling in 1971. At a Decanter tasting in 1979, softer than Ducru; a well-developed, characteristically sinewy classic in the mid-1980s. Last tasted April 1993. **** and still developing."

Bid on this 6-half-bottle lot of 2005 Brane-Cantenac, Margaux (375ml) (95RP, 94WE, 92WS, 91ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A sexy, style of wine from the Lurtons at Brane-Cantenac, this wine (a blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc) has a stunning nose of forest floor, licorice, blackcurrants, plums and spring flowers. Soft tannin, full-bodied opulence and beautifully textured, lush richness, make for a brilliant wine from this large, 180-acre vineyard. In spite of the wine’s stunning forward fragrance and lushness, the color still looks as if it is 3-4 years old, rather than a decade. This is a big-time winner in 2005 and should drink well for at least another 25+ years. (RP)" (06/2015)

Turns to sweet, crushed berries. Full-bodied, with very polished tannins and a berry and mineral aftertaste. The serious tannin structure is still hiding behind the fruit of the wine. Tightly wound and beautiful. Solid as a rock. A classic wine. (Web Only-2009)"

Of the 2011 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis-Les Preuses Grand Cru ,Allen Meadows - Burghound writes: "(from two parcels of vines that total 2.55 ha, or 22% of the entire appellation). If the Côte de Bouguerots is the biggest wine in 2011 then the Preuses is arguably the most aromatically complex with a broad ranging nose of perfumed and ripe scents of oyster shell, sea water, citrus and white flowers. The silky and refined flavors are wonderfully seductive with an intense minerality to the austere, bone dry and balanced finish that exudes hints of saline and iodine. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2009 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape (96WS, 95RP, 95ST). Wine Spectator: "Sinewy and reserved, with a light dusting of cocoa powder over the tangy damson plum, red licorice and cassis notes. The long, supple finish, with a lovely wafting note of Lapsang souchong tea, is packed with minerality and tight-grained tannins that will need time to fully evolve. One of the more backward 2009s, though this should pick up steam in the cellar. Best from 2013 through 2025." (11/2011)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2004 Cos d'Estournel, St-Estèphe (95JS, 94WS, 92RP, 91ST). James Suckling: "*Daily Collectibles* This is another example of the wonderful 2004 vintage for Bordeaux. They are so delicious to drink now. The Cos is one of the best out there. And very reasonably priced at less than $150 a bottle. The charcuterie that hits you as soon as you open this Bordeaux is overwhelming: It's smoky, spicy and sexy. Minutes later you realize the complexity on offer, catching just a scent of the dark fruits hidden beneath, and before those, long and wonderful hints of balsamic vinegar. On the palate this shows elegance and finesse thanks to fabulous balance, extremely integrated tannins and a long and glorious finish. This is so satisfying and wonderful now, but the slightly bitter aftertaste on the rear palate suggests this could do with at least another 10 years before opening. " (08/2014)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2010 Domaine du Vieux Telegraphe "La Crau" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (97RP, 96WS, 94ST, 94W&S). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Performing considerably better than it did prior to bottling, the 2010 Vieux Telegraphe Chateauneuf du Pape is one of the all-time great Vieux Telegraphes I have tasted in the last 3+ decades. I believe it is even superior to the 2007, which I had several weeks ago. The 2010 boasts a dense purple color along with a sumptuous bouquet of spring flowers, boysenberries, black cherries, black currants, nori (the sushi seaweed wrapper), black olives, licorice and pepper. This full-bodied, meaty, thick, juicy effort possesses a boatload of tannin, but it also has incredible concentration. More massive than I remember from last year, it has put on considerable weight and intensity. Forget it for 3-4 years, and drink it over the following 25-30 years. Kudos to Daniel and Frederic Brunier! (RP)" (10/2012)

Nose dominated by cherry and red plum. Sweet and pure in the mouth, with primary fruit-driven flavors complicated by licorice and earth. Impressively rich and strong, with firm underlying backbone. This one took six months in the barrel to finish fermenting its sugars, noted Landanger." (03/2006)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2006 Domaine du Pégaü "Cuvée Réservée" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (94RP, 94ST, 93WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reservee shares a similar meaty, gamy character intermixed with abundant notes of kirsch liqueur, ground pepper and Provencal herbs, sweeter tannins than the 2005, a voluptuous, full-bodied mouthfeel, and a long finish. The fruit seems sweeter and I would not be surprised if the 2006 has higher alcohol than the 2005 (although all top vintages here tend to be in the 14.8-15.6 range). This big, rich, impressive effort will age effortlessly over the next 20-25 years. " (10/2010)

Deeply pitched nose conveys plum, spices and earth. Smooth, smoky and subtle; in a warmer style than the foregoing wines but fresh too, offering good finesse to its raspberry and underbrush flavors. Finishes sappy, savory and long, with fine-grained tannins. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2010 Domaine Grand Veneur "Les Origines" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (95RP, 93ST, 92WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Another blockbuster is the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Origines. A blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 20% Mourvedre (45- to-95-year-old vines) aged in small oak, it exhibits an opaque purple color as well as a sweet bouquet of blackberries, espresso roast, ink and graphite. This starts out dry to taste, but then there is an explosion of strawberry and red currant fruits as the tannins fall back to reveal a wine that, while big, is certainly not overwhelming—leave that to more powerful vintages than 2004." Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2005 Domaine Henri Gouges Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru "Les Pruliers" ((90-92BH), (90-92RP)). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Being assembled the day I visited, the Gouges’ 2005 Nuits-St.-Georges Les Pruliers offered smoke-tinged, lightly-cooked black raspberry and dried cherry fruit, sweet underlying nuttiness, and a juicier, more invigorating personality than any of the already bottled wines in this year’s collection. A really imposing spread of berry, floral, roasted meat and saline mineral elements coat the palate. Abundant but fine tannin never interferes with this wine’s generosity. (DS)" (06/2007)

Black cherries smoke, tar and licorice all come to life in this intense, broad-shouldered wine. Layers of fruit build to the muscular, virile finish. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2007 Domaine Saint Siffrein Chateauneuf-du-Pape (94RP, 90ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The finest effort I have yet tasted from this estate, the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape is composed of 65% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 15% Mourvedre, and 5% Cinsault. Its traditional upbringing included 100% aging in old foudres. Its dense ruby/purple color is followed by a big, sweet, juicy kiss of kirsch liqueur intermixed with blacker fruits, raspberries, licorice, camphor, and hints of lavender and incense. The wine exhibits terrific concentration, full-bodied intensity, and a 45-50-second finish. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2005 Dominique Laurent Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru "Les Sentiers" Vieilles Vignes. According to Stephen Tanzer: "Laurent has built his negociant business on buying essentially two types of wines: those that get what he calls a naif vinification, featuring gentle extraction and minimal intervention (Laurent often calls these "vins de paysanne") and those made entirely from whole clusters (the vendange entier method). Wherever possible he works with ancient vines, often true pinot fin. Because his elevage helps to preserve the genetic identity and the energy of the wines he selects, he tends to outperform in very ripe years. Not surprisingly, his 2005 collection offers plenty of thrills." (International Wine Cellar, 03/07)

It is an appellation with tremendous potential, and a number of Chateauneuf du Pape estates are buying up vineyards in the appellation. The 2009 Lirac Cuvee de la Reine des Bois is another star from Christophe Delorme. Guigal "La Turque" Côte-Rôtie,Robert Parker's Wine Advocate writes: "On this showing, the 2010 La Turque was incredible, in a lineup of incredible wines. Offering off-the-chart notes of cassis, blackberry, aged beef, chocolate, crushed rock and exotic flowers, it flows onto the palate with a massive, full-bodied feel that carries ultra-fine tannin, awesome depth and a blockbuster finish. Syrah, or wine for that matter, doesn’t get any better. Give this monumental Cote Rotie 5-6 years and enjoy it over the following 2-3 decades. (JD)" (12/2014)

2009 Gros F&S Richebourg
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2009 Gros F&S Richebourg (95AG, 95RP, 94BH). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Richebourg blossoms in every direction with seemingly endless layers of flavor. An exotic melange of plums, red cherries, flowers and mint starts to take shape as the wine opens up in the glass. There is a pure radiance to the 2009 that is impossible to miss. At the same time, the firm Richebourg tannins keep everything in check. Higher-toned notes develop in the glass, balancing some of the wine’s more virile tendencies. The 2009 remains a bit of a brute and definitely needs further bottle age. This is going to be a fascinating wine to follow. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2034. " (04/2012)

2009 Lamarche Vosne Romanee Les Malconsorts
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2009 Lamarche Vosne Romanee Les Malconsorts (93BH). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A noticeable if not really intrusive application of wood sets off the very ripe black fruit nose that is lavishly spiced and complements well the dense, serious and robustly powerful flavors that possess a very firm (but not aggressive) tannic spine that is pushed to the background by the extract-rich and impressively persistent finish. The velvety mouth feel is quite seductive yet the overall impression is one of a muscular wine very much in the vein of a classic Malconsorts." (01/2012)

The rich, full-bodied, concentrated and powerful medium weight plus flavors possess a seductive and velvety mouth feel, all wrapped in a very firm and explosively long finish. This should be wonderful in due time though note well that this will require every bit of 15 years of cellar time." (Burghound 01/11) 92-94 in Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Vosne-Romanee Aux Malconsorts blossoms on the palate with inimitable grace in its bright red fruit. Floral notes appear later, adding lift and volume. The Malconsorts possesses dazzling inner perfume, with clean, saline notes framing the exquisite finish. Wild aromas of blackberry, licorice, coffee and animal fur. Lush and sweet on entry, then expansive in the middle, with dark berry flavors supported by a strong structure. This is really stuffed with fruit, and there's enough energy here to avoid coming off as heavy. Finishes with big, broad, dusty tannins and superb lingering sweetness. Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2003 Pierre Usseglio "Reserve des deux Freres" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (98RP, 94ST, 93WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The limited cuvee 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve des Deux Freres, which is aged 40% in tank and 60% in one-, two-, and three-year-old barrels as well as large demi-muids, is essentially the same as Mon Aieul, but additional press wine is added. This beefs the wine up to an even more extraordinarily concentrated character. This is another of the Chateauneuf du Papes of the vintage, a wine of remarkable length and prodigious levels of richness. It is no wimpy wine at 16.5% alcohol, but you would never know that from tasting it. Dense purple to the rim, with a huge nose of scorched earth, blackberry and blueberry liqueur, creme de cassis, roasted meat juices, and a hint of Provencal herbs interwoven with licorice and a touch of balsamic, it is voluptuously textured, with striking body, low acidity, and amazing concentration. Allen Meadows - Burghound: "This really hasn't changed very much since my original review in 2010 (see herein) and the nose is still exceptionally fresh with aromas of white flower, spiced pear, apricot and mango. There is excellent richness to the rich, full, powerful and overtly well-muscled flavors that offer impressive volume and power on the textured, indeed even opulent finish that is amply concentrated and seriously long. The rich, delicious and charming flavors display good power and focus on the balanced, concentrated and palate staining finish. Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1966 Pichon-Baron, Pauillac. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This exceeded my expectations given that this was supposed to be after the estate lost their way under Bertrand Bouteiller. A dark mahogany core. The nose is quite attractive, soft red-berried fruit, redcurrant, hot bricks on a summer day with a touch of mint. It is marred by a slight tinge of dishwater. Medium-bodied, good cohesion with a solid structure and good depth. Rustic, edgy but with good ripeness for a ’66, less austere and fleshier than other ’66 Pauillacs. On the finish: decayed cherry fruit, mouldy oranges in an antique glass vase. A pleasant surprise. Drink now. Tasted May 2009. (Neal Martin, Wine Journal)" (09/2009)

Of the 2009 Montrose, St-Estèphe,Robert Parker's Wine Advocate writes: " Harvested between September 17 and October 5, this wine seems always open for business, so to speak, much like the great 1982s. The summer of 2009 was very hot and dry, which got the harvest off to a reasonably early start. The blend was 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. Jean Bernard Delmas’ goal was to find perfect equilibrium between freshness and concentration, given its incredible opulence and the voluptuous character this vintage offered. A classic blend of 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre and the rest Syrah, Vaccarese and Counoise, all aged in large foudres in Clos des Papes's air-conditioned and humidity-controlled wine cellar, the wine boasts a dense purple color along with lots of gorgeously pure black raspberry, black currant and kirsch liqueur notes intermixed with notions of spring flowers, tapenade, licorice and spice box. This dense, full-bodied, powerful Chateauneuf is also remarkably fresh and well-delineated. It even exceeded the 2007 in natural alcohol, coming in at 15.9%. With an extraordinary texture and considerable tannin in the finish, it will benefit from 3-5 years of bottle age, and is built for 25-30 years of cellaring. Don't miss it! Dense ruby/purple-tinged with an exquisite nose of salty sea breezes, licorice, ground pepper, jammy black cherries, black currants, figs, and plums, this is a full-bodied, rich, Provencal-styled offering with lots of sweet, ripe tannin. It is surprisingly accessible for a Vieux Telegraphe (this wine normally shuts down several years after bottling), but it should have great longevity (25+ years) given its power, full-bodied mouthfeel, and enormous length and richness. A blend of 85% Grenache with the rest Syrah, Mourvedre and small dollops of the other authorized varietals, this wine tends to come from the estate’s holdings in the eastern sector of Chateauneuf du Pape. The opaque purple-colored 2009 exhibits magnificent, rich berry fruit intertwined with cedar, Christmas fruitcake, licorice, charcuterie, roasted meats, smoked duck, kirsch, blackberries and god knows what else. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2011 Domaine Joseph Drouhin Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru (92-94BH, 93JG, 92RP, 90-92ST). John Gilman - "The 2011 Griotte-Chambertin had not yet been racked at the time of my visit and was ready, showing just a bit of reduction on both the nose and palate. However, underneath is a lovely wine in the making, offering up scents of red and black cherries, plums, cocoa, a touch of nutskin, grilled meats and a bit of new oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and rock solid at the core, with fine, nascent complexity, fine-grained tannins and superb length and grip on the focused and youthful finish. Lovely juice. (Drink between 2022-2050)" (12/2012)

Of the 2010 Montrose, St-Estèphe,Robert Parker's Wine Advocate writes: "This is considered to be among the greatest vintages ever made in Montrose, right up with the 1929, 1945, 1947, 1959, 1961, 1989, 1990 and 2009. Harvest was October 15 to 17. The wine has really come on since I last tasted it, and it needs at least another 10 years of cellaring. The blend was 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. The wine is opaque black/blue, with an incredible nose of blueberry and blackberry liqueur, with hints of incense, licorice, and acacia flowers. Tannins are incredibly sweet and very present. Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 1999 Haut-Brion, Pessac-Léognan (93RP, 92ST, 92WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Deep plum, currant, and mineral notes emerge from the concentrated, beautifully balanced, pure 1999 Haut Brion. It seems to be cut from the same mold as years such as 1979 and 1985. There is a hint of graphite in the abundant fruit. The wine is medium to full-bodied, nuanced, subtle, deep, and provocatively elegant. It is made in a style that only Haut Brion appears capable of achieving. The finish is extremely long, the tannins sweet, and the overall impression one of delicacy interwoven with power and ripeness. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2025. (RP)" (04/2002)

Suave and sweet, with pronounced minerality giving definition to the currant and floral flavors. A deep wine with a long, perfumed but slightly austere back end. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2009 Duhart-Milon, Pauillac (97RP, 95JS, (89-92ST), 92WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon and 37% Merlot, it displays an inky/blue/purple color as well as a big, sweet nose of creme de cassis, forest floor, licorice, lead pencil, cedar and subtle barrique smells. Viscous and full-bodied, it is the most concentrated and broadest example of this cuvee I have tasted in over three decades. It will be ready to drink in 5-7 years and should last for three decades or more. Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2011 Domaine Dujac Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Aux Combottes" (92BH, 90AG, 90RP). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Here the fruit is more deeply pitched with excellent nuance to the well-layered blue and black pinot fruit that also evidences hints of violets, earth and wet stone. There is a clean and polished mouth feel (in the best sense) to the energetic and saline-infused flavors that are shaped by ripe tannins on the mouth coating, dusty and balanced finish. 1990 Margaux, Margaux (1.5L)
Bid on this magnum of 1990 Margaux, Margaux (1.5L) (100RP, 98ST, 98WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I had this wine both in Seoul, Korea in February, and from my cellar in December, 2008, and it was remarkable how identical the wines smelled and tasted. It offers an extraordinary aromatic display of spring flowers, camphor, sweet red and black fruits, a hint of licorice, and no evidence of its 100% new oak cask aging. Round and generous with low acidity, but an opulent, full-bodied richness that is fresh with laser-like precision, this stunning wine is just beginning to reach its plateau of full maturity, where it should remain for another three decades. A sensational effort, it is one of the legendary wines made at Chateau Margaux. (RP)" (06/2009)

1975 d'Yquem, Sauternes
Bid on this bottle of 1975 d'Yquem, Sauternes (99RP, 95WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1975 may turn out to be the greatest of the modern-day Yquems. When fully mature in another 25-30 years, it may rival the extraordinary 1937 and 1921. This wine continues to evolve at a stubbornly slow pace. It is far more backward than recent vintages such as 1983 and 1986. Nevertheless, it is awesomely concentrated, has perfect balance, and displays the telltale Yquem aromas of vanillin oak, tropical fruit, pineapples, honeyed peaches, and grilled almonds. There is exceptionally crisp acidity that pulls all of the massive extract into precise focus. This is a wine of astonishing power and finesse, with a finish that must be tasted to be believed. It is a monumental effort that may well justify a perfect score in another decade. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2060. Last tasted, 1/91. (Bordeaux Book, 3rd Edition, 01/1998)" (01/1998)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2011 Domaine Meo-Camuzet Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru ((91-94BH), 93WS, (90-92ST)). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A relatively expressive nose of various red berry fruit elements has added breadth from the presence of discreet spice and plenty of pungent earth character. The delicious and unusually fine flavors possess really lovely detail and good verve if only moderate power on the balanced and beautifully persistent finish. The supporting tannins are quite fine-grained and this is more of a Clos de Vougeot of finesse and harmony rather than robust muscle and punch." (01/2013)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2011 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape (96RP, 95WS, 93ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the stars of the vintage and coming from absurdly low yields of 18 hectoliters per hectare, the 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape is a full-bodied, seamless effort that exhibits copious kirsch, ground pepper, dried flowers and underbrush as well as incredibly fine tannin, great mid-palate concentration and ample length on the finish. Relatively forward by this estate’s standards, it will be approachable at an earlier age than normal. Nevertheless, it will have 20+ years of evolution and is an awesome effort in the vintage. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2010 Domaine du Pégaü "Cuvée Réservée" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (98RP, 97WS, 94ST, 93W&S, 93WE). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Looking at the 2010s and a brilliant vintage for Laurence, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape offers up classic Pegau aromas and flavors of ripe dark fruits, garrigue, cured meats, tobacco leaf, saddle leather and hints of game. Full-bodied and beautifully concentrated, it offers a seamless, layered profile on the palate with thrilling mid-palate depth, sweet, yet substantial tannin, and a blockbuster finish that stays fresh and beautifully focused. Quite polished by this estates standards, it nevertheless screams southern France and I doubt it’s possible to have too much of this beauty in the cellar. According to the chateau, the 2009 has the highest level of polyphenols ever measured as well as high alcohol (nearly 13.5%). A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest largely Merlot with touches of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it is an expressive, voluptuously textured effort with unctuosity and powerful, juicy, succulent blackberry and black currant flavors, low acids, a layered, massive mouthfeel, but no sense of heaviness or fatigue. 1990 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1990 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac (96RP, 95WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Interestingly, a bottle of 1990 Lafite Rothschild I pulled from my cellar for a video blog on my web site was still buttoned down, tight, and even with extended decanting was not showing as much as I would have hoped. However, a bottle tasted, of all places, in Seoul, Korea in February, was only a few points short of perfection. That amazing performance motivated me to pull another bottle out of my cellar and follow it over the course of two days. Sure enough, by the second day the wine was roaring from the glass. The 1990 Lafite has turned out far better than my early assessment. While it still possesses some firmness, and performs like a late adolescent in terms of its evolution, it boasts gorgeous aromas of cedar, tobacco leaf, cassis, and lead pencil shavings. The explosive aromas are followed by a fleshy, full-bodied wine that should hit its peak in 5-8 years, and last for 25

Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2008 Drouhin-Laroze Chambertin-Clos de Beze Grand Cru ((92-94BH), (91-93RP)). Allen Meadows - Burghound: " An expressive and elegant mélange of oak trimmed and very spicy red and blue pinot fruit aromas nuanced by hints of violets and the expected pungent Gevrey earth that is also picked up by the rich and particularly full flavors that possess a natural sweetness, which serves to buffer the firm tannins on the wonderfully persistent finish. A lovely and entirely classic Bèze that is built to age." (01/2010)

Wine Spectator: "Intense aromas of violets, berries and spices follow through to a full-bodied palate, with layers of supersilky tannins and a long, long finish. Very classic in style. All in elegance and length. I like it better than the 2000. Best after 2009." (03/2004)

2009 Domaine des Chezeaux (Ponsot) Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2009 Domaine des Chezeaux (Ponsot) Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru (94BH). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "This is notably fresher than the Chapelle with a strikingly elegant and highly complex nose that displays perfumed and notably ripe red currant and cassis aromas that are liberally laced with warm earth and spice hints. There is good intensity and detail to the opulently textured medium weight plus flavors that are blessed with a seemingly endless reserve of sap on the gorgeously long finish. This is a really impressive effort and if the palate complexity can eventually match that of the nose, this should be able to achieve, or perhaps even exceed, the upper end of my predicted range. 2005 Clos Fourtet, St-Emilion
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2005 Clos Fourtet, St-Emilion (98RP, 95WS, 94WE, 92ST, 92W&S). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Clos Fourtet is on a roll, having produced a stunning wine in 2003, and an even more brilliant effort in 2005. Stephane Derenoncourt, the consulting oenologist, has plenty with which to work given the fact that this is a relatively large vineyard (50 acres) planted with 85% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc as well as a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon. The inky/blue/purple-colored 2005 boasts an exceptional perfume of acacia flowers, blackberry and blueberry liqueur, graphite, scorched earth, and background oak. The wine possesses a full-bodied texture and abundant quantities of stunningly pure black fruits. The result is a sumptuous St.-Emilion of great concentration, intensity, and overall balance. This prodigious effort looks set for 25-30 years of evolution. Utterly awesome!" (04/2008)

Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2000 Louis Latour Nuits-St-Georges. Have you been looking for older Burgundy and seen how little is available? In particular the 2000 vintage, which is drinking deliciously well, has become particularly hard to find. As the producer says of this wine: "An intense, deeply coloured wine, showing pronounced, complex fruit of cherries, blackcurrents and violets, with truffles and spices. Subtle and integrated oak flavours on the palate with peppery notes, this wine is medium bodied, concentrated and admirably long on the finish."

Laurent,' he buys wine and fashions it into something exceptional in his Nuits-St-Georges cellars. He has researched and revived many a technique from the last century and tailors his methods (which tend to minimum intervention and maximum new oak) to suit each combination of vintage and vineyard." Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2009 Gruaud Larose, St-Julien (95JS, 95RP, 94ST, 93WE, 92WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "As I wrote in my barrel tasting note, the 2009 appears to be the finest Gruaud Larose since their 1990. Some of my concerns about too much brett in previous vintages are long gone as the purity of the 2009 jumps out. Copious notes of sagebrush, cedar, cigar box, licorice, incense, blackberries and lead pencil shavings suggest a big Pauillac rather than a St.-Julien. Broad, rich and full-bodied with good balance and abundant, but sweet, well-integrated tannin, this big, masculine Gruaud Larose reveals remarkable finesse, richness, extract, density and a cascade of fruit that nearly hides the lofty tannins. This beauty should be at its best between 2020-2045." (02/2012)

Medium-bodied with a stunningly layered texture, impressive purity, and beautiful balance, this cuvee is haute couture in a glass. Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2010 Domaine Grand Veneur "Vieilles Vignes" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (100RP, 95ST, 93WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A monumental effort meriting a perfect score, the super-rich 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is a 4,000-bottle blend of 50% Grenache, 40% Mourvedre and 10% Syrah from 55- to 105-year-old vines and was aged for 18 months in small oak. The wine offers majestic blackberry and cassis fruit intermixed with kirsch, licorice and subtle Provencal herbs in the background. It is akin to chewing meat in the mouth given its viscosity and thickness. This utterly amazing wine comes close to being over the top, but it pulls back just in time. A massive Chateauneuf du Pape (even for a 2010), it needs 5-6 years of cellaring and should age effortlessly for 25-30 years. Bravo! (RP)" (10/2012)

1982 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1982 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac (100JS, 100RP, 98ST, 98WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This wine remains one of the legends of Bordeaux. It has thrown off the backward, youthful style that existed during its first 25 years of life, and over the last 4-5 years has developed such secondary nuances as cedar and spice box. The creme de cassis, underlying floral note, full-bodied power, extraordinary purity, multilayered texture, and finish of over a minute are a showcase for what this Chateau accomplished in 1982. The wine is still amazingly youthful, vibrant, and pure. It appears capable of remaining fruity and vibrant in 2082! Thank God it is beginning to budge, as I would like to drink most of my supply before I kick the bucket. This is a great, still youthful wine, and, on occasion, one does understand the hierarchy of Bordeaux chateaux when you see the complexity and brilliance of this first-growth." (06/2009)

Juicy, sweet and gripping on the palate, with a weightless, delicate quality to the sharply delineated flavors of raspberry, orange peel and minerals. Bid on this bottle of 1982 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac (97RP, 96AG, 96JS, 95ST, 94WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is a denser version of the 1990 that stylistically reminds me of what the young 1959 probably tasted like. Still backward with a deep ruby/plum color revealing only a touch of lightening at the edge, the wine offers up an extraordinary nose of caramelized herbs, smoke, cedar, pen ink, black currants, and earth. The gorgeous aromatics are followed by a full-bodied, plump, rich, fleshy wine with low acidity. With 6-8 hours decanting in a closed decanter, it will offer beautiful drinking, but it needs another 5-8 years to reach full maturity. It is capable of lasting 50-60 years. (97+) (RP)" (06/2009)

Bid on this bottle of 2000 La Mission Haut-Brion, Pessac-Léognan (100RP, 95JS, 95ST, 93WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the wines of the vintage, the 2000 has barely budged in its evolution since it was bottled and released in 2002. After ten years in bottle, it still reveals a dense opaque purple color along with a potentially sensational bouquet of blueberries, black currants, graphite, asphalt and background oak. Extremely powerful, full-bodied and superbly concentrated with good acidity and high but round tannins, this massive La Mission-Haut-Brion should take its place among this estate’s most hallowed vintages when it hits full maturity in another one to two decades. I was surprised by just how youthful this wine tasted at age 12. If tasted blind, I would have guessed it to be around 4 to 5 years old. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2050." (08/2012)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2009 Ducru-Beaucaillou, St-Julien (100RP, (95-97WE), 96JS, 96WS, 95ST). It will be interesting to see how the 2009 fares against the 2010 after twenty years of aging, but my money is on the 2009. A blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot that achieved 13.5% natural alcohol, this inky purple, unctuous wine possesses classic aromas of graphite, creme de cassis, blueberries, violets, licorice and Christmas fruitcake. Bid on this 2-magnum lot of 2010 Troplong Mondot, St-Emilion (1.5L) (99RP, 94JS, (90-94ST), 94WS, 92WE). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Inky, bluish/black/purple, with notes of spring flowers, licorice, camphor, graphite, and a boatload of blueberry, black raspberry and blackberry fruit, this is a powerful, full-bodied Troplong Mondot. All the building components of acidity, tannin, wood and alcohol are judiciously and impressively integrated. It is a blend of 90% Merlot and the rest equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc made by Christine Valette and her husband Xavier Pariente with the consultancy help of Michel Rolland. I-m not sure what the heady alcohol level is in Troplong Mondot in 2010 (it certainly must be in the 15%+ range), but it is well-concealed behind the extravagant, richness, full-bodied power, and pure nobility of this majestic wine. Forget this for 5-7 years and drink it over the following three decades." (02/2013)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Michel Delon, a great man, is the consummate proprietor, meticulously administering this vast estate spread out along the St.-Julien/Pauillac border, separated from Latour's finest vineyard by a mere ten feet. The 1993-95 vintages from Delon are brilliant wines. Leoville-Las-Cases remains one of the irrefutable reference points for high class Bordeaux. One of the more massive Medocs of the vintage, this opaque purple-colored wine exhibits fabulous richness and volume in the mouth. Layers of pure black-cherry and cassis fruit are intermixed with stony, mineral-like scents, as well as high quality toasty oak. Medium to full-bodied, with a sweet, rich entry, this wine possesses plenty of tannin, yet fabulous extract and length. Leoville-Las-Cases is one of the half-dozen great wines of the Medoc in 1994. Bid on this 8-bottle lot of 1985 L'Eglise-Clinet, Pomerol (OWC - 95RP, 94WS) in original wood. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A superstar of the vintage... This wine still has a very saturated opaque ruby/purple color that is far less evolved than almost any other 1985. The wine has sweet cranberry, black cherry, and blackberry fruit notes intermixed with mineral, cold steel, and a hint of cedar. Rich, full-bodied, with fabulous purity, a very well-delineated feel in the mouth, enormous richness, and a long finish that goes on for nearly 45 seconds, the wine seems to grow incrementally in the glass with increasing amounts of air, and is certainly a 1985 that has evolved at a snail’s pace compared to most wines of this vintage. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I have been telling people for years that this domaine's 'best buy,' if such a label can be applied here, is the Grands Echezeaux. While it is not Romanee-Conti or La Tache, it often comes very close to those two titans, at a fraction of the price. In 1988, it is fabulous. In fact, my unedited tasting notes had the words 'fabulous' in them twice and 'awesome' once. It is decadently rich and spicy with an extraordinary perfume of violets, gamey, plum-like fruit, toasty new oak, and a finish that must last several minutes. It, like the Echezeaux, should not be consumed for at least 5 years, and should easily last until 2010 or longer. (Burgundy Book)" (01/1990)

1995 La Mission Haut-Brion, Pessac-Leognan
Bid on this bottle of 1995 La Mission Haut-Brion, Pessac-Leognan (95RP, 92WS, 91ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This vintage is aging at a glacial pace and the tannins are currently more significant than their counterbalancing components of fruit and glycerin. While the word “potential” seems to be the most positive descriptor for this vintage, there are some nagging doubts about whether all the tannins will melt away and the fruit will hold. As in most 1995s, the color remains a healthy dark plum/purple. One of the bigger wines of the vintage, the ripe, powerful Merlot component has buttressed the Cabernet elements, giving the wine plenty of body, tannin and La Mission’s classic asphalt, cassis, blackberry, smoky barbecue, meaty notes intermixed with a hint of hot rocks. The 1995 is still a young wine and I am beginning to wonder if this vintage overall will resemble 1975 rather than something with more charm? Anticipated maturity: 2020-2035?. (95+) (RP)" (08/2012)

2010 Clos Fourtet, St-Emilion
Bid on this bottle of 2010 Clos Fourtet, St-Emilion (98RP, 95WS, (93-94JS), 94ST, 94WE, 91CG, 91DC). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The wine has an opaque blue/black color and abundant notes of forest floor, spring flowers, black raspberry and blueberry liqueur in the aromatics along with hints of espresso and white chocolate. The wine is dense, full, rich, unctuously textured and very full-bodied, with its extravagant glycerin, fruit and extract covering the wine’s somewhat tannic structure. This is a bigger, more restrained and structured wine than the outrageously flamboyant and prodigious 2009. (RP)" (02/2013)

Bid on this bottle of 2009 Beauséjour (Duffau), St-Emilion (100RP, 95WS, 94JS, 94WE, 92ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This big wine (nearly 15% natural alcohol) is a blend of 77% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon. It boasts an opaque blue/purple color along with a gorgeous bouquet of charcoal, incense, truffles, blackberry jam, black currants, raspberries and flowers. While enormous in the mouth, the limestone soils in which the grapes are grown give the wine good freshness as well as laser-like clarity and precision. Amazing to taste, this massive, super-concentrated powerhouse comes across as ethereal and almost feminine despite its extravagant fruit, density and richness. It is a modern day legend for sure! 2009 La Mondotte, St-Emilion
Bid on this bottle of 2009 La Mondotte, St-Emilion (100RP, 98JS, 96WS, 95ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Perfect, the 2009 La Mondotte boasts an inky/black/purple color as well as sumptuous notes of incense, graphite, licorice, black cherries, blackberries, cedar and forest floor. It is extraordinarily thick and voluptuous with a cool climate minerality that gives the wine an uplift and freshness that is surprising in view of its massive fruit level and high extract. The tannins are abundant, but sweet and well-integrated, as are the acidity, alcohol and wood components. An infant at present, this 2009 requires 6-8 years of cellaring and should keep for three decades." (02/2012)

Bid on this bottle of 2009 Le Carré, St-Emilion (97RP, 93JS, 93ST, 93WS, 92WE). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Achieving nearly 15% natural alcohol (one of the highest of the Jonathan Maltus St. Emilion estates) , this blend of approximately 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc is from vineyards that sit on limestone soils near Clos Fourtet, an area that performed brilliantly in 2009. Inky purple, with notes of graphite, vanillin, blackberry and cassis as well as crushed rock and floral notes, the wine has breathtaking extravagance and a luxuriant fruit quality that simply has to be tasted to be believed. Phenomenally rich, full-bodied, and brilliantly poised and well-balanced, this is a tour de force in winemaking and a colossal Le Carre, the finest Jonathan Maltus has yet produced. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2028." (02/2012)

Bid on this bottle of 2009 Pavie, St-Emilion (100RP, 98JS, 98WS, 96ST, 95WE). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Bottled the week before I arrived, the 2009 Pavie appears to have barely budged since I tasted it two years ago. Many experts consider this phenomenal terroir to be nearly as great as that of Ausone. Made from a classic blend of 60-70% Merlot, 20-25% Cabernet Franc and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, this inky/blue/purple-colored blockbuster reveals wonderful notes of blackberries, crushed rocks, roasted meats, spring flowers, cedar, blueberries, graphite and a hint of vanillin. With extravagant fruit and high extract as well as a hint of minerality, this structured, massively intense effort is typical of all the luxurious, perfect or nearly perfect Pavies produced under the Perse regime (which began in 1998). While built for 40-50 years of cellaring, the softness of the vintage and its flamboyant style is slightly less apparent in the 2009 Pavie than in some of the other Perse wi

Bid on this bottle of 2010 Troplong Mondot, St-Emilion (99RP, 95ST, 94JS, 94WS, 92WE). Forget this for 5-7 years and drink it over the following three decades. An absolutely stunning wine from this estate, which seems to be on a

Bid on this bottle of 1993 Domaine du Vieux Telegraphe "La Crau" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (90RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "In 1993, Vieux-Telegraphe was able to harvest virtually all of its crop at sugar levels that produced a wine of 14% alcohol. The outstanding 1993 reveals an impressively saturated dark ruby/purple color, and a spicy, Provencal herb, pepper, black-cherry and raspberry-scented nose with a touch of licorice. Full-bodied, with firm tannin and structure (reminiscent of the 1989), as well as layered richness, this Chateauneuf du Pape has 10-15 years of aging potential. Last tasted 8/96. (RP)" (01/1997)

1975 Cheval Blanc, St-Emilion
Bid on this bottle of 1975 Cheval Blanc, St-Emilion (95ST, 90RP). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright ruby-red with a hint of garnet. Enticing floral nose offers very pure raspberry and red cherry aromas, complicated by tobacco and bay leaf notes. Then sweet, dense and smooth in the mouth, with rich red cherry, plum and peppery flavors. Finishes with still chewy but noble tannins and a trace of heat. A great Cheval Blanc that is more massive than usual, showing plenty of concentrated, complex flavors and a wonderfully rich texture. In this vintage, Cheval Blanc benefited from its earlier ripening soils, which allowed the grapes to be harvested at optimal phenolic ripeness, something that eluded other Bordeaux estates that may have picked too early. The harvest took place from September 26 to October 8. This was the first vintage of Cheval Blanc ever sold en primeur. " (10/2011)

Many years have passed since I last tasted the ’83 Las-Cases. It is reticent at first, like and old tongue-tied friend entering the room, then it blossoms with aeration offering scents of leather, chestnut, brambly black fruit and freshly rolled tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with melted red-berry fruits, firm tannins and superb balance. Hints of bell pepper and sandalwood furnish the long, harmonious finish. The palate is absolutely seamless from first impression to finish, effortlessly building layers of complexity in the mouth and leading to a very long, earth and spice finish. Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2006 Joseph Drouhin Musigny Grand Cru (95RP, 95WE, 91ST, 90BH). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Musky floral notes suggesting narcissus, magnolia, and perhaps some sort of exotic orchid mingle in the nose of Drouhin's 2006 Musigny with quinine, birch beer, and kirsch. The palate boasts remarkable richness and sheer viscosity for the vintage – though little superficial sweetness – along with textural refinement that goes beyond even the best of the rest of this year's Drouhin collection. Fruit pit bitterness; brown spices; roasting pan reduction of meat and fat; and an almost palpable sense of chalky and ore-like minerality add to the mystery and invigoration of a vibratory finish. This tastes awfully delicious today, though it should probably be given a few years in bottle. It ought to perform marvelously for at least a decade. (DS)" (12/2009)

The wine is supple and full-bodied, with sweet tannin, glorious levels of fruit and extract, abundant glycerin, and a seductive, truffle-flavored finish. It offers an extraordinary aromatic display of spring flowers, camphor, sweet red and black fruits, a hint of licorice, and no evidence of its 100% new oak cask aging. Pauillac, a village located between Saint-Estephe and Saint-Julien on Bordeaux's Medoc peninsula, is home to some of the world's most famous and expensive wines (most obviously those of the first growths Chateaux Latour, Lafite Rothschild and Mouton Rothschild). 90 points Wine Spectator: "Tough and closed in, but there's plenty going on in the glass. A full-bodied wine, with black cherry, charcoal and light earth aromas and tons of flavor. Has super-firm tannins and a tight structure. Needs much more time." (10/1991) Jancis Robinson: "Very low proportion of Grenache. Very, very dark ruby with definite development on the rim. Quite a subtle nose – tea? Violets too. Mouthfilling, warming, not very very subtle or many high notes. Slightly dusty end. Relatively lightweight. Not intense. A bit gamey and low key. Sweet, a bit simple. (JR) 17/20 points" (12/2009)

1997 Latour, Pauillac

91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Medium red. Roasted currant, lead pencil, grilled nuts, tobacco and minerals on the nose. Smooth, vinous and concentrated, with lovely depth of flavor and ripe acidity for the vintage. Finishes with even tannins and excellent length. A very successful '97." (6/2000) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A flavorful, savory Latour, without a great deal of density or power, the 1997 exhibits sweet, walnut-tinged, black currant fruit intertwined with minerals and subtle wood. Nicely-textured, with adequate acidity, ripe tannin, and a medium-bodied finish, this smooth effort should drink well for ...Read More »

2010 Peyrabon, Haut-Médoc Top Pick!
2010 Peyrabon, Haut-Médoc

91 points Wine Spectator: "Rock solid, with a gutsy frame of roasted apple wood and a full-bodied core of plum, boysenberry and black currant fruit. Dense and chewy, displaying spice-studded grip on the finish that courses along vivaciously. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2020. (Web only - 2013)"90 points Wine Enthusiast: "From a property owned by Patrick Bernard of négociant Millésima, this shows the results of considerable investment during the recent years. The wood dominates at this early stage, but it also shows complex fruit to balance the spice and toast ...Read More »

1983 Doisy Daene, Barsac

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Doisy-Daene finished its harvest 1 month after d’Yquem, and has possibly produced this property's finest wine in over two decades. A big, ripe bouquet of pineapples, peaches, and spring flowers is very attractive. On the palate, the wine is concentrated, full bodied, and unctuous, without being too heavy or alcoholic. Excellent acidity suggests a long, eventful evolution. (RP)" (3/1990) Wine Spectator: "A pleasant drink and there's even some complexity, but it's not cuddly. Light gold, waxy and sulfury on the nose, sugary sweet, oak, honey, pear, apricot on the palate. ...Read More »
