French Wine

When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its regions, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and occasionally as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a 100 lives. To understand and appreciate French wine, you only need to begin tasting them. Check out some of the top picks that our buyers have tracked down - several of these wines are imported directly from France.

1993 Domaine Thomas Moillard Romanee-St-Vivant Grand Cru
Bid on this bottle of 1993 Domaine Thomas Moillard Romanee-St-Vivant Grand Cru . The records from the town of Nuits-Saint-Georges confirm that the Moillard family owned vineyards there before the French Revolution. But it wasn't until 1850 that the first train on the new Paris-Lyon line brought a Belgian notary to Nuits. He became the first client of Symphorien Moillard and encouraged him to become a wine merchant. In effect, he was asking him to select and age other regional wines besides those of his own estate. So, you can see, these folks have been in the negociant business for a bit!

Neal Martin writes: "Domaine Meo-Camuzet boasts one of the most enviable portfolios in Vosne-Romanee, crowned by Richebourg Grand Cru and Cros Parantoux, the latter essentially grand cru in all but name thanks to the late Henri Jayer, who decided that vines might profit more from the land than a few veg."

1998 Maison Champy Romaneé-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru
Bid on this bottle of 1998 Maison Champy Romaneé-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru. Allen Meadows writes: "Pierre Meurgey now directs this relatively new house with his father Henri and financial partner Pierre Beuchet. Maison Champy has slightly more than 12 ha of vineyards (all of it in the Côte de Beaune) in its own right and buys in grapes, must or wine on the négociant side of the house. They have also recently purchased and equipped a new winemaking facility on the outskirts of Beaune off the Route de Pommard (it was first used in the 1999 vintage) to supplement their facility in the heart of Beaune itself. The production of the reds now occurs in the new facility while 90% of the upper level whites are produced in the older one."

Wine Spectator: "Terrific combination of the best of both worlds in Côte-Rôtie--the ripe, powerful raspberry and blackberry fruit, coffee and cocoa notes, along with the alluring, sauvage game, mineral and spice flavors. Both camps work hand-in-hand here, and take turns in extending the amazingly long finish. Best from 2006 through 2030. (JM)" (07/2004)

1990 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1990 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac (96RP, 96ST, 95WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Interestingly, a bottle of 1990 Lafite Rothschild I pulled from my cellar for a video blog on my web site was still buttoned down, tight, and even with extended decanting was not showing as much as I would have hoped. However, a bottle tasted, of all places, in Seoul, Korea in February, was only a few points short of perfection. That amazing performance motivated me to pull another bottle out of my cellar and follow it over the course of two days. Sure enough, by the second day the wine was roaring from the glass. The 1990 Lafite has turned out far better than my early assessment. While it still possesses some firmness, and performs like a late adolescent in terms of its evolution, it boasts gorgeous aromas of cedar, tobacco leaf, cassis, and lead pencil shavings. The explosive aromas are followed by a fleshy, full-bodied wine that should hit its peak in 5-8 years, and last for 25

1996 Margaux, Margaux
Bid on this bottle of 1996 Margaux, Margaux (100RP, 96ST, 95WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Chateau Margaux, a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc, must be a strong contender for wine of the vintage. It offers everything you desire from this First Growth. It is blessed with breathtaking delineation and freshness on the nose, understated at first and then blossoming with mineral-infused black fruit, hints of blueberry, crushed stone and violet. The palate is perfectly balanced with filigree tannin, perfect acidity, a wine where everything seems to be in its right place. Blackberry, crushed stone at the front of the mouth, just a touch of spice towards the finish that shows supreme control. This is a Margaux that seems to light up the senses. It was outstanding in its youth...something that has not changed one bit over the intervening two decades. This may well turn out to be the Left Bank pinnacle of the 1990s. Tasted July 201

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1996 Bollinger R.D. Extra Brut Champagne (97JS, 97WE, 96RP, 95VN, 94W&S, 94WS). Wine Enthusiast: " *Cellar Selection* The Bollinger R.D. (recently disgorged) is Bollinger's answer to a prestige cuvée. Keeping the wine long on its lees (this was disgorged in June 2006) yields a wine that is very much in the rich Bollinger style. This is a beautifully balanced wine, with acidity, intensity and structure in perfect harmony. It is still so young, and certainly could age for years. (RV)" (11/2006)

2004 Domaine Bouchard Père et Fils Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Bid on this 5-bottle lot of 2004 Domaine Bouchard Père et Fils Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru (95ST, 93BH, 92WS). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Pale, bright color. A quintessence of Corton-Charlemagne dirt on the nose: stone fruits, lemon, iodine, ginger, minerals and mint, all complicated by a musky, leesy note that reminded me of a Coche-Dury wine. Then compellingly dense and penetrating in the mouth, with captivating, soil-driven flavors of raw pineapple, white peach, white flowers and crushed rock; a sulfidey complexity and a saline element add to the wine's spectacular subtle complexity. Hardly a blockbuster but conveys an impression of great solidity. This remarkably precise wine coats the palate with dusty stone and leaves behind a suggestion of honey. My sample at Bouchard in early June was painfully young and closed though obviously outstanding, but this bottle, tasted in New York in August, was spectacular. 95+" (10/2006)

Still incredibly young at age 10, this wine is set for 30 or more years of longevity. This is a great, great Haut-Bailly that will one day probably rival 2009 and 2010. 96+ points. Dark red and black fruit, smoke, tar and spices build in a wine that impresses for its volume and resonance. Today the flavors are a bit compact, but I imagine that is just a function where the wine is in its life. I very much like the sense of power and density here. (AG)" (01/2014)

2007 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru "Valmur"
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2007 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru "Valmur" (95RP, 94BH, 92ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The first grapes picked from the marl-rich upper portion of this site near Vaudesir, Fevre’s 2007 Chablis Valmur nonetheless displays (as in 2006) a dramatically different personality from their Vaudesir. Fresh lime, red currant, tangerine, grapefruit, and peony mingle in a Riesling-like effusion of fruit and flower, underlain by a salty and iodine-tinged mineral soup that seems as deep as the sea. Soundings reveal citrus zest, fruit pits, kelp, pine resin, and oyster shells. This should be an almost inexhaustible source of intrigue and pleasure over the coming decade. You’ll never get to the bottom of it, but so much the better for you and the wine! Fine as the 2006 was, this 2007 seems to illustrate the extent to which slow ripening, high extract, and bright acids best complement Valmur’s inherent character. (DS)" (12/2009)

Wine Spectator: "Displays gorgeous, savage aromas and flavors, with crushed juniper berry, hot tar, sage leaf, roasted chestnut and grilled beef notes that scorch across the palate. Still rugged on the finish, though the color at the rim and the intensity and range of the aromas show that this is evolving. (JM)" (09/2007)

Complex and full-bodied, with hints of new oak and wonderfully polished tannins that caress the palate. Long, long finish. This is not the blockbuster it was from barrel, but rather a complete, balanced and gorgeous red. Best after 2015. (JS)" (06/2008)

Bid on this 5-bottle lot of 1998 Quinault L'Enclos, St-Emilion (94RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "An elegant as well as powerful effort, this dense ruby/purple-colored 1998 reveals notes of plums, black raspberries, vanillin, minerals, licorice, and spice. Exceptionally rich with an outstanding texture, this medium to full-bodied wine possesses a distinctive, individualistic style, largely because of its floral, blueberry fruit flavors. This mounts impressively and coats the palate without giving any impression of weight. The fine-grained tannins contribute to an overall impression of finesse. Strong juice, but quite refined. Bid on this bottle of 2005 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Les Pucelles" (96W&S, 93BH, 93WS, 92ST). Wine & Spirits: "The domaine owns three parcels (7.56 acres) of Les Pucelles, which borders Bâtard-Montrachet and Bienvenues- Bâtard-Montrachet. More than half of it was planted prior to 1969, the oldest vines dating to 1954. This is both subtler and more explosive than Clavoillon, its pear and honeysuckle perfume recalling the work of the bees among the vines. That classical buzz infuses the architectural power of the wine, a grand mineral structure embedded in the fruit itself. The beautiful scent and luscious texture should be reaching their peak eight to ten years from the vintage." (12/2007)

Very ripe yet high-pitched aromas of wet stone, hawthorn and botanical herbs. Broad, silky and sweet, with a three-dimensional quality to the superrich yet sharply delineated flavors of crushed stone, violet and lavender. Perhaps best today on the superb rising finish, where the wine's compelling vibrancy carries through. Another wine of great dimension. Lardiere used 60% new oak here, but the wood element is fully integrated and virtually invisible. Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 2007 Domaine de la Mordorée "Reine des Bois" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (97RP, (93-96ST), 96WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Evolving beautifully, the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de La Reine des Bois has shed some of its crazy tannin and is showing a more layered, voluptuous profile. Possessing beautiful kirsch, blackberry, candied licorice, flowers and lavender, it offers knockout richness and decadence to go with brilliant purity of fruit, superb concentration, and a full-bodied, layered mouthfeel. While I don’t think it matches the ’01 or ’10, it’s an incredible bottle of wine that can be consumed anytime over the coming 10-15 years. (JD)" (08/2014)

1982 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1982 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac (100JS, 100RP, 98ST, 98WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This wine remains one of the legends of Bordeaux. It has thrown off the backward, youthful style that existed during its first 25 years of life, and over the last 4-5 years has developed such secondary nuances as cedar and spice box. The creme de cassis, underlying floral note, full-bodied power, extraordinary purity, multilayered texture, and finish of over a minute are a showcase for what this Chateau accomplished in 1982. The wine is still amazingly youthful, vibrant, and pure. It appears capable of remaining fruity and vibrant in 2082! Thank God it is beginning to budge, as I would like to drink most of my supply before I kick the bucket. This is a great, still youthful wine, and, on occasion, one does understand the hierarchy of Bordeaux chateaux when you see the complexity and brilliance of this first-growth. (RP)" (06/2009)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2004 Louis Roederer "Cristal" Brut Champagne (97RP, 97W&S, 97WE, 94ST, 93WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2004 Brut Cristal has put on quite a bit of weight since I first tasted it earlier this year. It is a powerful, structured Cristal layered with considerable fruit. Chardonnay seems to play the leading role in 2004, at least today. Cristal is often accessible young, but that is far from the case here. This is a serious, painfully young Cristal that will require considerable patience. Readers who are willing to spend some time with the wine today will find a super-impressive, complete Cristal. The 2004 Cristal is 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay. This is Lot L033331E100008, disgorged January, 2010. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2034." (12/2010)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2009 Smith-Haut-Lafitte Rouge, Pessac-Léognan (100RP, 96JS, 96WS, 94ST, 94WE). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The finest wine ever made by proprietors Daniel and Florence Cathiard, the 2009 Smith-Haut-Lafitte exhibits an opaque blue/purple color in addition to a glorious nose of acacia flowers, licorice, charcoal, blueberries, black raspberries, lead pencil shavings and incense. This massive, extraordinarily rich, unctuously textured wine may be the most concentrated effort produced to date, although the 2000, 2005 and 2010 are nearly as prodigious. A gorgeous expression of Pessac-Leognan with sweet tannin, emerging charm and delicacy, and considerable power, depth, richness and authority, it should age effortlessly for 30-40+ years. Bravo! 2005 Gracia, St-Emilion
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2005 Gracia, St-Emilion (98RP, 93ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This estate is a tiny micro-treasure in St.-Emilion. Owned by Michel Gracia and consisting of less than five acres of vines, it turned out a final blend in 2005 of 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, but only 5,000 bottles were produced. A wine pushing for perfection, notes of blueberry and blackberry dominate, but also underlying the fruit is a strong core of minerality and flowers. Full-bodied, rich, concentrated, and absolutely pure, this is a tour de force and a prodigious effort in this great, long-lived, slow-evolving vintage. It's a wine with a character of cloves and berries with hints plums. It shows loads of potpourri. Roses too. Full and so balanced. Tight and youthful. The winemaker at Lafite says that when he wants to show someone a perfect example of Pauillac this is the Lafite he pours. Maybe he is right? " (12/2013)

1990 Haut-Brion, Pessac-Léognan
Bid on this bottle of 1990 Haut-Brion, Pessac-Léognan (98RP, 94WS, 93ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "In terms of the brilliant complexity and nobility of the aromatics, scorched earth, black currants, plums, charcoal, cedar, and spices, the 1990 offers an aromatic explosion that is unparalleled. It is always fascinating to taste this wine next to the 1989, which is a monumental effort, but much more backward and denser, without the aromatic complexity of the 1990. The 1990 put on weight after bottling, and is currently rich, full-bodied, opulent, even flamboyant by Haut Brion’s standards. It is an incredible expression of a noble terroir in a top vintage. While it has been fully mature for a number of years, it does not reveal any bricking at the edge, and I suspect it will stay at this level for another 10-15 years ... but why wait? It is irresistible now. (RP)" (06/2009)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2005 Pontet-Canet, Pauillac (97RP, 96WS, 95ST, 94WE). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Possibly the youngest wine of all the 2005 Médocs in terms of its evolution, at age 10 the inky purple 2005 Pontet-Canet tastes more like a two-year-old wine. Loads of pure blueberry, blackberry and cassis fruit are present along with a hint of licorice and background oak. It is full-bodied, ripe, and excruciatingly fresh, vigorous and exuberant. This is a tour de force, and a sensational effort that rivals the first growths. Give it another 5-10 years of cellaring, and drink it over the following 30-40 years. 97+ points." (06/2015)

1988 Domaine Thomas Moillard Corton-Clos du Roi Grand Cru
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1988 Domaine Thomas Moillard Corton-Clos du Roi Grand Cru.

Bid on this bottle of 2007 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape (100RP, 97WS, 95ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the great vintages from this estate, surpassing even the 1990, 2000, 2001, 2003, and maybe the 2010 (time will tell with this one), the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape from Vincent Avril delivers everything you could want from a wine. Full-bodied, intense and beautifully concentrated, with plenty of muscle and depth, it shows the hallmark elegance and purity of the estate, with sensational notes of kirsch liqueur, raspberries, incense, smoked meats and Asian spices. The blend is the normal 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah and the rest a mix of permitted varieties, brought up all in older foudre, and it's just now entering its prime drink window and has another two decades of longevity. 2001 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Bid on this bottle of 2001 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape (96RP, 93WS, 92ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Beaucastel has been on a terrific qualitative roll over the last four vintages, and the 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape (which Francois Perrin feels is similar to the 1990, although I don’t see that as of yet) is a 15,000-case blend of 30% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah, 10% Counoise, and the balance split among the other permitted varietals of the appellation. This inky/ruby/purple-colored cuvee offers a classic Beaucastel bouquet of new saddle leather, cigar smoke, roasted herbs, black truffles, underbrush, and blackberry as well as cherry fruit. It is a superb, earthy expression of this Mourvedre-dominated cuvee. Full-bodied and powerful, it will undoubtedly close down over the next several years, not to re-emerge for 7-8 years. The 1995 Climens has a butterscotch, dried pineapple, kumquat and wax-resin bouquet that is well defined and now fully open for business. The palate is spicy on the entry, chamomile, cinnamon and brown spices, just a touch of dryness on the finish. But there is great depth here with a long barley sugar and spice finish. Bid on this bottle of 1995 d'Yquem, Sauternes (95RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Served from an ex-chateau bottle. The 1995 Chateau d’Yquem is moving into its secondary aroma phase. A deep golden color, it has a dense and almost Barsac-like bouquet with tangerine, apricot, acacia and melted candle wax. It displays good intensity, unfolding beautifully in the glass. The palate has a strident opening, with a slight bitter edge that lends this Yquem great tension. One can discern layers of marmalade infused with honey fruit, with a powerful, spicy finish that lingers long in the mouth. It is a multi-layered Montrose that offers enormous length, fresh and vibrant with the magnum demonstrating tangible mineralite and tension as it fans out on the crescendo of a finish—a fanfare for Saint Estèphe in all its glory. Improving all the time in the glass, this example of 1990 Montrose is a privilege to behold. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2010 Charmes-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes is a wine of impeccable class and elegance. Layered, nuanced and subtle, the wine literally blossoms in the glass, showing off its incomparable pedigree. Sweet, floral notes appear later, adding complexity to layers of silky, highly expressive fruit buffered by suave tannins. The gracious, aristocratic finish leaves a lasting impression. This is a dazzling effort from Bachelet. Anticipated maturity: 2022-2032. (AG)" (12/2011)

2010 Clos Rougeard "Les Poyeux" Saumur Champigny
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2010 Clos Rougeard "Les Poyeux" Saumur Champigny (95RP, 93VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Only recently released, the purple-colored 2010 Saumur-Champigny Les Poyeux attracts with a delicate and very elegant, though not over-concentrated, bouquet of floral and fruity aromas exhibiting Mediterranean herbs and very clear and coolish cherry and wild berry aromas along with cedar wood flour. Full-bodied, smooth, and intense, this absolutely delicate and elegant red is structured by the finest tannins and a delicious acidity that let this persistent wine sing on your palate. It combines finesse with intensity in a very remarkable manner and is divinely balanced. A great wine to drink now or in the next 20-25 years. (SR)" (10/2014)

Deep, dark aromas of blueberry, violet, flowers, coffee and mocha. Superrich and chocolatey, with lovely sweetness, but currently quite closed. Has more stuffing for its tannins than the Chambolle premier cru. Finishes firm but ripe and long." (04/2002)

Toasted oak and sweet tobacco too. Roses and other flowers, such as lilacs. Full-bodied, with masses of tannins yet incredibly long and seductive. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2010 Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Vosne Romanee "Clos du Chateau" (91RP, 90BH). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the Comte Liger-Belair vertical at the Château de Vosne. The 2010 Vosne-Romanée Clos du Château has a more backward, introspective bouquet compared to the 2009, the fruit a little darker with a light marine influence. The palate is nicely structured with a keen thread of acidity, the tannins a tad grittier in the mouth and white pepper littered over the masculine finish. This might last longer than the 2009 although it will need more bottle age. Tasted June 2015. (NM)" (07/2015)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2002 Louis Roederer "Cristal" Brut Champagne (100W&S, 99JS, 98WE, 96CG, 96RP, 96VN, 92WS). Wine & Spirits: "If a wine could ever make you want to pull the top down on your '68 Ferrari convertible, rip off the rearview mirror and take off, this is it. It has a different kind of energy than the '02 Cristal Rosé, which is more ethereal, like strawberries at the right hand of some ancient Gallic god. This is more insolent, brash, earth bound. All the scents and flavors seem to emanate from limestone, as does the acidity, which hits at the front of the mouth and powers through the wine with the kind of solar energy that lifts mist off the white chalk on a cool morning in Cramant. The wine goes on for miles. It's already irresistible, and will only improve with ten, 20, 30 and 40 years of age." (12/2009)

Subtly musky aromas of strawberry, raspberry, smoked meat, underbrush, minerals, licorice and smoke. Very intensely flavored and precise but slow to show itself. The red fruit and mineral flavors build slowly and linger impressively on the very long, vibrant aftertaste. Following the recent replanting of about half these vines, this is all from old vines. 92+ (ST)" (03/2004)

2000 Pavie, St-Emilion
Bid on this bottle of 2000 Pavie, St-Emilion (100RP, 96WS, 93ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Just beginning to come around and strut its enormous potential, this wine at age 15 has been evolving like a glacier. The wine has an inky, opaque, plum/purple color and a stunningly rich nose of mulberries, bramble berries, blackberries, licorice and incense as well as touches of toast and graphite. Fabulously concentrated and full-bodied, with a multidimensional mouthfeel, this profound Pavie is in mid-adolescence. It should evolve and continue to drink well for at least another 30-40 years. This is clearly the first compelling effort made by the Perse family. (RP)" (08/2015)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2010 Domaine Comte Armand Pommard 1er Cru "Clos des Epeneaux" (95BH, 95RP, 94ST, 94VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2010 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux could be Leroux’s finest so far. It has a convincing, elegant bouquet that at this early juncture bears semblances to the 2008, but ramps up the intensity without compensating on delineation, with subtle notes of spice and balsam coming through. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet, candied entry. This is very pure, soft and caressing in the mouth but around the sides you can feel the tannins gently exerting their grip. There is not a hair out of place on this glorious, shimmering Clos des Epeneaux. Magnifique! Drink 2015-2025+ (NM)" (08/2013)

2009 Clos Fourtet, St-Emilion
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2009 Clos Fourtet, St-Emilion (100RP, 95WE, 94JS, 94ST, 93WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "After tasting it three times from bottle, I am convinced this prodigious wine is one of the greatest young Bordeaux I have ever tasted. Inky blue/purple with notes of camphor, forest floor, blackberry, cassis, sweet cherries, licorice, the wine has stunning aromatics, unctuous texture and an almost inky concentration, but without any hard edges. With considerable tannin and just enough acidity to provide definition, this wine transcends even its premier grand cru classe terroir. It is certainly the finest Clos Fourtet ever produced. Give it 5-7 years of cellaring to allow some of its baby fat to fall away. There is certainly enough structure underneath to keep for 30-50 years. Bravo! ... (RP)" (02/2012)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "With an unbelievable nose of licorice, tapenade, black cherry and blackcurrant liqueur, as well as full body, super-sweet tannin, and astonishing richness and length, this prodigious effort in 2005 announced the resurrection of this great terroir on the slopes near Château Pavie. Dark garnet/plum/purple, this is compelling stuff and drinkable already, but capable of lasting another 25-30 years. This beauty is not to be missed! (RP)" (06/2015)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Beginning to open magnificently, the still dense purple-colored 2000 reveals a blossoming bouquet of blackberries, cassis, graphite and pen ink. Full-bodied with velvety tannins that have resolved themselves beautifully over the last eleven years, this wine is still an adolescent, but it exhibits admirable purity, texture, mouthfeel and power combined with elegance. It boasts marvelous inner sweetness and layers of expressive fruit that seem to blossom endlessly in the glass, filling out the wine’s broad-shouldered frame all the way through to the huge, viscous finish. Its beguiling nose reveals spiced/poached pear scents. On the palate, this light to medium-bodied offering reveals outstanding depth of fruit, a satiny texture, harmony, and loads of lush mineral, candied citrus, and spice flavors. The 1989 exhibits less botrytis than the other two vintages. This spectacular wine is nearly overwhelming in its richness, thickness and intensity. Once all its baby fat falls away, the terroir characteristics and additional nuances will emerge. It is fresh, voluptuous, and opulent in the mouth, but the fresh acids and vibrancy give it exceptional precision as well as a refreshing style despite its weight, richness, and length. Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 1995 Cos d'Estournel, St-Estèphe (95RP, 94WS, 92ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A wine of extraordinary intensity and accessibility, the 1995 Cos d'Estournel is a sexier, more hedonistic offering than the muscular, backward 1996. Opulent, with forward aromatics (gobs of black fruits intermixed with toasty pain grille scents and a boatload of spice), this terrific Cos possesses remarkable intensity, full body, and layers of jammy fruit nicely framed by the wine's new oak. 2003 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 2003 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac (100RP, 98JS, 97WE, 96WS, 93ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2003 Lafite Rothschild comes as close to perfection as any of the great Lafites made over the past three decades (1982, 1986, 1996, 2000, 2005, 2008, 2009 and 2010). This sensational effort came in at 12.7% natural alcohol, it is made in the style of one of this estate’s great classics, the 1959. Composed of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it exhibits a dense ruby/purple color to the rim along with a luxurious bouquet of cedarwood, lead pencil shaving, white chocolate, cocoa and cassis. Fat, rich, opulent and full-bodied with low acidity and stunning seductiveness and complexity, this noble wine possesses a bountiful, generous, heady style. It is just coming into its plateau of maturity where it should hold for 20-25 years. This is one of the candidates for the wine of the vintage – make no mistake about that. (RP)"

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A winner, the gorgeously aromatic 2000 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Combottes displays a profound nose of spicy black fruits. Plump, intense, and deep, it is jam-packed with lush black fruit and spices. This medium-bodied, velvety-textured, generous, fruit-forward wine also reveals a long, sultry finish. (PR)" (06/2003)

2008 Pétrus, Pomerol
Bid on this bottle of 2008 Pétrus, Pomerol (97RP, 97WE, 95ST, 94JS, 93WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "It is hard to call Petrus a 'sleeper of the vintage,' but the 2008 will merit more attention than most consumers would think. Low yields of 30 hectoliters per hectare resulted in only 25,000 bottles of this beauty. A wine of great intensity (possibly the most concentrated wine of the vintage), this 100% Merlot boasts a dark purple color as well as a sweet perfume of mocha, caramel, black cherries, black currants, earth and forest floor. Deep, unctuously textured, full-bodied and pure, it will benefit from 4-5 years of cellaring and should drink well for 25-30+ years. (RP)" (05/2011)

Bid on this 12-bottle lot of 2003 Montrose, St-Estèphe (OWC - 98RP, 97JS, 96ST, 95WE, 95WS) in original wood. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2003 Montrose was served blind in Bordeaux on two occasions. Picked between 11 to 26 September, it is a blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. It remains one of the outstanding wines of a very black and white vintage. Without knowledge of the vintage, I was hesitant to suggest 2003, because though there is clearly fruit intensity locked up inside this Saint Estèphe, it is counterbalanced by the estate's trademark masculinity and austerity. So both on the nose and the palate it reaches this happy medium: pure blackberry, graphite and roasted herbs on the nose, perhaps even more elegant than I have observed on previous bottles. The palate is medium-bodied rather than full bodied with sturdy tannins couched in layers of seamless blackberry and cassis fruit, offset by scents of tobacco and graphite. As

2009 Pontet-Canet, Pauillac
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2009 Pontet-Canet, Pauillac (98JS, 98RP, 96ST, 96WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted blind as a vintage comparison at the Valandraud vertical, the 2009 Pontet-Canet is a wine that I have tasted several times throughout the year. Here, it is clearly bestowed a very powerful and intense bouquet with raspberry jam, boysenberry, graphite and cold, wet limestone aromas - very well defined and focused, the oak seamlessly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, crisp acidity, in a funny way more like a 2010 towards the finish thanks to its structure. It still feels quite backward and with much more to give, a sense of coiled up energy conveyed upon the extremely persistent finish. It remains a deeply impressive Pauillac with decades ahead of it. Tasted December 2016. (NM)" (02/2017)

Bid on this bottle of 2008 Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru "Les Cras" (92BH, 92RP, 91ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2008 Nuits. St. Georges Les Cras is ageing beautifully and surpasses one’s expectations for a village cru. It has a lovely, open, generous bouquet with red currant and blackberry leaf that is nicely focused, offering bacon fat scents with continued aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. There is just a little hardness toward the finish and perhaps it does not quite possess the persistency of a premier cru, but it contains impressive mineralite and tension. (NM)" (12/2013)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The spectacular 2003 Leoville Poyferre exhibits a dense purple color with a touch of lightening at the edge as well as notes of creosote, barbecue smoke, jammy black currants, licorice and spice box. This intense, voluptuously textured, full-bodied St.-Julien possesses low acidity and ripe tannin. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The powerful aromas of the 2002 Echezeaux display toasty black fruits and hints of fresh herbs. Medium to full-bodied and dense, it is a well-balanced, sweet, super-generous wine. Its broad, jammy, fat mass of inky fruit reveals flavors reminiscent of blackberries, black cherries, and licorice. Wine Spectator: "*** Collectibles - Ranked #10 in Top 100 Wines of 2005 *** The greatest young Yquem I have ever tasted from bottle. Yellow, with a golden hue and an almost green tint. Intense aromas of botrytis, spices and blanched almonds follow through to honey, maple syrup, dried apricot and pineapple. Full-bodied, sweet, thick and powerful, with layers of fruit and a bright, lively finish. Coats the palate yet remains exciting. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 from Cheval Blanc is a quintessentially elegant, beautiful, deep bluish/ruby-colored wine from St.-Emilion, with raspberry, blueberry, and floral notes, impressive density, great precision, freshness and purity. Full-bodied, but extremely light on its feet, I don’t mean to gush, but it is super-intense, rich and just so meticulously crafted! This is another fabulous wine and a perfect expression for this vintage. It is difficult to forget the gorgeous blueberry and raspberry fruit, full body, sweet tannin, a multi-layered texture, and purity and palate presence of this stunning wine. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2001 Domaine Dujac Clos de la Roche Grand Cru (94BH, 93VN, (89-91RP)). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "As is the case with this wine from 750 ml (see herein for that review), this beauty displays more elegance and finesse than usual with its pure aromas of earth, black and red fruit and spice that are nuanced by subtle notes of soy, coffee and hoisin. There is a really lovely mouth feel to the nicely voluminous, intense and mineral-laden middle weight flavors that deliver exceptionally fine length in an impeccably well-balanced finale. While certainly not at its apogee, this is one of those 2001s that is so harmonious that it could easily be enjoyed now though it clearly is still on the way up and thus should amply reward another 6 to 8 years of cellaring." Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Volnay Clos Des Ducs is the only wine in this lineup that is playing its cards close to the vest. Weightless yet powerful, the Clos des Ducs impresses for its striking balance and poise. There is so much going on in the glass its hard to know where to start. Floral notes meld into hints of licorice, sweet red cherries and mint in this crystalline, totally gorgeous Volnay. Today the tannins are impossibly firm, so readers will have to be patient. Utterly seamless grand cru texture, but with the wine's precision partly hiding its depth of flavor. A strong note of clove spice contributes energy. A blend of two-thirds Grenache and one-third Syrah that was aged in equal parts new and used oak, it has thrilling notes of crème de cassis, licorice, vanilla bean and crushed rock to go with a big, full-bodied, decadent, yet still elegant and classy profile on the palate. Intense and sweet, with persistent black berries and mocha aromas and an almost nutty enamel this noble, full-bodied Cabernet Franc is enormously dense and concentrated. 2009 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 2009 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac (98RP, 97JS, 96WE, 96WS, 93ST, 93VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Performing even better from bottle than it did from barrel, this appears to be the finest Lynch Bages since the 2000, 1990 and 1989. According to the chateau, the 2009 has the highest level of polyphenols ever measured as well as high alcohol (nearly 13.5%). A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest largely Merlot with touches of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it is an expressive, voluptuously textured effort with unctuosity and powerful, juicy, succulent blackberry and black currant flavors, low acids, a layered, massive mouthfeel, but no sense of heaviness or fatigue. This exquisite Lynch Bages should drink well for 30+ years. (RP)" (02/2012)

2004 Pavie, St-Emilion
Bid on this bottle of 2004 Pavie, St-Emilion (96W&S, 95WS, 94RP, 91VN). Wine & Spirits: "A conspicuously modern wine, Pavie with its hyper-ripe fruit and substantial new oak treatment stands out as an offense to some, a glorious pleasure to others. In the case of the 2004, it carries the oak beautifully, untamed by it. The wine is wild, in fact, and quite hard to resist. The cool complexity of the tannins grows out of three terroirs: the limestone plateau, a sector of gravel and limestone and a third sector of clay. The fruit opens with thick-skinned black plum power, reverberating with feral scents and violets. Staunch and formidable, the wine is packed with life." (10/2007)

2010 Larcis Ducasse, St-Emilion
Bid on this bottle of 2010 Larcis Ducasse, St-Emilion (98RP, 97JS, 97VN, 94ST, 94WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The wine boasts 14.6% natural alcohol and is a final blend of roughly three-fourths Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc, cropped at a ridiculously low 19 hectoliters per hectare. Notes of licorice, garrigue, incense, smoked meats, espresso, creme de cassis and blackberry liqueur jump from the glass of this unbelievably intense wine. Remarkably full, with compelling freshness and precision, this is a fabulous effort in 2010. It will probably close down over the next several years, and not re-emerge for at least a decade, something that often happens with the bigger, richer, more muscular St.-Emilions from the limestone hillsides and plateaux. This is one of the superstars of the vintage and a profound wine. Drink it between 2020 and 2045. 98+ (RP)" (02/2013)

1996 Léoville-Barton, St-Julien
Bid on this bottle of 1996 Léoville-Barton, St-Julien (93RP, 92ST, 91WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Leoville Barton appears more youthful than the 1996 Langoa Barton in the glass with a healthy deep garnet core. The aromatics unfurl gracefully in the glass revealing briary, wild hedgerow, black truffle and sandalwood scents -- firmly in secondary aroma stage but with appreciable presence and intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin that form its firm and classic structure, spice, white pepper and cloves infusing the slightly animally red berry fruit. This is an adorable Léoville Barton that is occupying a very 'happy' place at the moment -- superb precision, old school claret at its best. Decant for an hour no more, then enjoy. (NM)" (10/2016)

There is a velvety texture to the delicious, round and seductive middle weight flavors that possess good verve and finesse. In the same vein as the Bressandes the supporting tannic spine is clearly ripe but notably more fine-grained and overall this beautifully balanced effort is an exercise in refinement. Good stuff." An opaque plum/purple color is accompanied by a glorious bouquet of burning embers, roasted meats, espresso, and sweet plum and blackberry fruit. Richer and deeper than it appeared from the barrel, with a tremendous finish, this full-bodied, impressive effort represents a breakthrough for Gazin. (RP)" (06/2004)

Reticent but vibrant nose hints at fresh apple, spearmint, talc, ginger and gun metal. Rich, full, sweet and pure, with highly concentrated, brisk flavors of lime, mint and spices. The wine's glyceral richness is leavened by brisk acidity. A 2001 of uncommon energy, and extremely long on the aftertaste. (ST)" (07/2003)

Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A more discreet and naturally cooler nose of extract of red pinot and blue berry fruit that is also spicy and elegant but here the coolness of the vineyard comes into play in the form of a certain reserve, particularly on the delicious and mineral suffused medium plus weight flavors that possess superb focus and really lovely detail on the layered, wonderfully complex and tautly muscular finish that goes on and on. 2008 Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Vosne-Romanée
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2008 Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Vosne-Romanée. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Reflecting a wealth of diverse parcels literally from top to bottom in this commune, Liger-Belair’s 2008 Vosne-Romanee combines leathery, animal scents with aromas of strawberry and red raspberry, as well as a hint of decadent lily perfume. The delicacy of touch and seeming memory of the fruit’s malic acid in the form of tartness is slightly awkwardly juxtaposed with a faintly lactic note. There is certainly good length here, and a refined texture, with no sense of dominant new wood such as has affected this cuvee in past vintages (DS)" (06/2010)

Bid on this 3L-bottle lot of 2006 Lafite Rothschild, Pauillac (3L) (96WE, 95RP, 95ST, 95WS). Wine Enthusiast: "As so often with Lafite, it is power that marks this wine. That, and density of texture. The additional element in this vintage, and at this stage of the wine’s development, is a dominant wood element. The vanilla and tannins from the wood match well with the concentrated tannins of the fruit, which is dark, dense and tight. This is a wine for long-term aging: in 15 years this will have superb richness. *Cellar Selection* (RV)" (03/2009)

1996 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac
Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 1996 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac (97VN, 96RP, 95ST, 92WS). Vinous: "What a treat it is to taste these two Pichon Lalandes straight from the chateau’s cellar. The 1996 Pichon Lalande is stratospheric from the very first taste. The deep, layered bouquet alone is deeply transfixing. Smoke, mocha, dark spices, lavender, crème de cassis, a host of dark-fleshed fruits and a touch of warm, resonant sweetness from the French oak draw me in. All of those sensations follow through to the palate, where the wine is massive, intense and totally enveloping. Time has softened the tannins to the point the 1996 is ready to drink, but there is enough sheer concentration here to support another 20-30 years of exceptional drinking. I am not sure I possess the vocabulary to describe just how captivating the 1996 is, but I do know this: If I had an opportunity to pick up a few well-stored bottles I would take it in a nanosecond. Readers holding the 1996 should be thrilled. The 1996

Of the 2005 Domaine Bouchard Père & Fils Volnay 1er Cru "Les Caillerets - Ancienne Cuvée Carnot",Wine Spectator writes: "Both sweet fruit and oak highlight this concentrated, firmly structured red. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1989 Tertre Roteboeuf, St-Emilion ((94-95RP), 93WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Deep ruby/purple with slightly more intensity to its hue than the 1990, this full-bodied wine still has a very roasted character intermixed with sweet chocolate Raisinet-like flavors. Sweet, overripe cherries also make an appearance in this thick, juicy, yet structured, rather powerful Tertre Roteboeuf that is aging more slowly than its more renowned sibling, the 1990. Inky purple in color, with stunning blackberry, blueberry and raspberry fruit notes, licorice, as well as graphite and spring flowers, the wine is opulent, full-bodied, massively concentrated and a tour de force from an obsessed genius of Bordeaux. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2002 Bollinger "La Grande Année" Brut Champagne (98W&S, 97JS, 94RP, 94VN, 94WS). Wine & Spirits: "There is Champagne, and then there is 2002 Bollinger. This wine makes me dizzy, stammering in cross-eyed bliss. Taking a step back, the sustained chord of flavor comes into focus, revealing a limestone honey: scents of acacia, marzipan, apricot and golden citrus. Jamal Rayyis, one of our tasters with the broadest flavor library in his head, described the scent as loomi (dried lime) and dried apricot, as if walking into a Middle Eastern market. Flavor details aside, the wine’s richness softens the structural grandeur of the vintage, which is buoyed in a mineral bath of power. This will reward another ten or 20 years of age, and the bottles that remain will likely only feed the wine’s legend. " (12/2011)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A blend from five parcels, Rouget’s 2005 Vosne-Romanee offers a lovely, sweet scent of black fruits and flowers, incense, cumin and nutmeg. There is a striking palate counterpoint between brightly fresh black raspberry, cherry, and a creaminess of texture and caramelization of oak, finishing with beautiful, pure sweetness of black fruit liberally spiced and subtly underlain with chalk. You’d be hard pressed to find a more pristine or effusive village Vosne. One scarcely notices the structure, although I think it’s there. Perfectly integrated acidity extends the palate-staining, layered finish. With a blend of 15-, 45- and 75-year-old vines in his 1.7-hectares holding in Charmes, Lafon has the flexibility each year to make one of Burgundy's top Meursault bottlings. (ST)" (09/2007)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2009 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes (99RP, 95VN, 95WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is considered by many observers in Chateauneuf du Pape to be the wine of the vintage, and it can most certainly be counted among the finest. A blend of 80% Grenache and the rest Syrah and Mourvedre tipping the scales at 15.5% natural alcohol (which is slightly less than the Chaupin), the wine has an inky black/purple color as well as incredible density and richness, with notes of soy, blackberry, and blueberry liqueur, incense, acacia flowers and licorice. The layered, full-bodied mouthfeel displays no heat, but the wine has massive concentration and a silky, smooth finish. Because of the low acidity in the 2009s, and sweet tannins, this has turned out to be a glorious example of Chateauneuf du Pape to drink over the next two decades. (RP)" (10/2011)

1964 Cheval Blanc, St-Emilion
Bid on this bottle of 1964 Cheval Blanc, St-Emilion (96RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A blockbuster Cheval Blanc and probably the greatest Cheval Blanc made during the sixties and seventies, this wine still has a dense, murky garnet color and knock-out aromatics of coffee, black fruit, and spice box. The wine is opulent and fleshy with enormous glycerin and power. It is still very muscular, also with slightly robust tannins to shed, but this wine seems almost immortal in terms of longevity. My best guess is that, from pristinely stored bottles, this wine is still in late adolescence and not yet at its peak of maturity. Anticipated maturity: Now-2025. (RP)" (12/2002)

Bid on this bottle of 1996 Joseph Drouhin Griottes Chambertin Grand Cru (92BH). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "I have experienced some bottle variation over the past few years though to be fair none of them have been poor. The expressive, cool and attractively complex array of now largely mature secondary aromas (though no sous bois) complements detailed and delicious middle weight flavors that possess fine focus and reasonably good length on the moderately austere if attractively pure and complex finish. This offers grand cru complexity and class if not the usual mid-palate concentration and while it should continue to hold for several more decades, I don't foresee much additional upside development." Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 2006 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Les Clavoillons" ((92-94ST)). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good pale yellow color. Superripe aroma and flavor of candied pineapple. Fat and sweet but with excellent acidity. This goes to another level on the youthfully clenched, tactile back end, which features superb citric cut, classic minerality and terrific thrust and power. Sampling this today is almost like tasting two different wines, one on the front half and the other on the back. (ST)" (10/2007)

1999 Pavie, St-Emilion
Bid on this bottle of 1999 Pavie, St-Emilion (92RP, 92ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This wine has a very youthful color and seems to be close to full maturity, without the density of the 1998, or its successor, the perfect 2000. It has abundant foresty notes, plenty of spice box, blackcurrant and black cherry fruit, some background toasty oak, medium to full body and sweet tannin. A very delicious wine, it offers a complex and fragrant style. It should be drunk over the next 12-15 years. (RP)" (08/2015)

2010 Pontet-Canet, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 2010 Pontet-Canet, Pauillac (100JS, 100RP, 98WE, 97WS, 95ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "An absolutely amazing wine... It comes from one of the few biodynamic vineyards in Bordeaux, but you are likely to see many more, given the success that Tesseron seems to be having at all levels, both in his vineyards and in his fermentation/winemaking. An astounding, compelling wine with the classic Pauillac nose more often associated with its cross-street neighbor, Mouton-Rothschild, creme de cassis, there are also some violets and other assorted floral notes. The wine has off-the-charts massiveness and intensity but never comes across as heavy, overbearing or astringent. The freshness, laser-like precision, and full-bodied, massive richness and extract are simply remarkable to behold and experience. It is very easy, to become jaded tasting such great wines from a great vintage, but it is really a privilege to taste something as amazing as this ... (RP)" (02/2013)

Bid on this bottle of 2009 Haut-Bailly, Pessac-Léognan (98RP, 97JS, 94ST, 94WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A dense ruby/purple-tinged color offers up notes of forest floor, subtle wood smoke, mulberries, black cherries, cassis and a hint of lead pencil shavings. There is even a floral component lurking in the intricate aromatic profile. The wine is medium to full-bodied with wonderful intensity that builds incrementally and has a long, silky, luscious finish. There is plenty of tannin, but it is largely concealed by the wine’s beautiful fruit and ethereal complexity. Given its virtually perfect balance, this brilliant Haut-Bailly should age effortlessly for 3-4 decades. This is a tour de force in winemaking, particularly for readers seeking the quintessential example of a Bordeaux that combines compelling complexity and finesse with significant flavor authority and intensity ... Bid on this bottle of 2011 Domaine d'Auvenay (Lalou Bize-Leroy) Bourgogne Aligote Sous Chatelet (90RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The question is - did I under-rate the 2011 Bourgogne Aligoté a couple of years ago? Maybe so. This has a lovely popcorn and brioche-tinged nose that is beautifully defined and vibrant. The palate has a little spiciness emanating from the grape variety, wonderful balance and poise, seemingly gaining weight over the last couple of years. Utterly delicious and polished off far too quickly! (NM)" (10/2015)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2009 Léoville-Poyferré, St-Julien (100RP, 96JS, 96WE, 95ST, 93WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the more flamboyant and sumptuous wines of the vintage, this inky/purple-colored St.-Julien reveals thrilling levels of opulence, richness and aromatic pleasures. A soaring bouquet of creme de cassis, charcoal, graphite and spring flowers is followed by a super-concentrated wine with silky tannins, stunning amounts of glycerin, a voluptuous, multilayered mouthfeel and nearly 14% natural alcohol. Displaying fabulous definition for such a big, plump, massive, concentrated effort, I suspect the tannin levels are high even though they are largely concealed by lavish amounts of fruit, glycerin and extract. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2040. (RP)" (02/2012)

2010 Les Forts de Latour, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 2010 Les Forts de Latour, Pauillac (97RP, 96JS, 95WS, 94WE). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Bizarre as it may sound, the 2010 Les Forts de Latour is also the finest I have ever tasted from this selection, which comes from specific vineyards, not really so much a second wine as just another wine from estate holdings. A blend of 72.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 27.5% Merlot that represents 40% of the production, this astonishing wine hit 14.3% natural alcohol. Extremely ripe and rich, it reminds me of the 1982 on steroids (and that wine is still drinking great 30 years after the vintage). Sensational notes of graphite, crushed rocks, black fruits, camphor and damp forest notes are present in this expansive, savory, full-throttle wine, which is better than many vintages of the great Latour itself from the past. (That may be a heretical statement, but it’s the truth as I see it.) This wine needs a good 5-6 years of cellaring and should age for three decades at minimum, g

1996 Domaine Arlaud Clos St. Denis Grand Cru

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This spectacular wine is medium-to-dark-ruby-colored and exhibits deeply ripe black fruit aromas that give way to an explosive, fat, velvety-textured, lush, and opulent personality. This offering does not lack complexity, yet it has the same seductive qualities as Arlaud's other wines. Violets, black cherries, freshly ground white pepper, pork fat, juicy blueberries, and loads of North African spices tantalize the palate. Its admirably long and soft finish reveals loads of supple tannins. (PR)" (08/1998)

2008 J.-F. Coche-Dury Bourgogne Blanc
Bid on this bottle of 2008 J.-F. Coche-Dury Bourgogne Blanc. Coche-Dury's Bourgogne Blanc is sourced from a single-hectare parcel planted on clay and limestone soil in 1930, 1958 and 1975. Importer Kermit Lynch writes: " ... Though they are best known for their Chardonnay, they also bottle six exquisite Pinot Noirs. No clones of any kind are planted - an absolute rarity in Burgundy, where cold, humid winters, spontaneous springtime hail storms, and harvest rains all make farming a challenge. Once in the cellar, vinifications are long and traditional, with extended lees contact. This extra time on the lees prevents oxidation and works in tandem with the terrific freshness his grapes achieve. A good proportion of new wood is used, not to influence the taste of the wine, but rather to extend the cellar-aging potential of these pedigreed wines and to serve as a clean slate for perfect fruit...Though their bottlings are extremely limited, any chance to taste the wines of Coche-Dury promises

The team from Pontet Canet, who have done such a phenomenal job at that estate, were in charge of making this Senejac, and the result, not surprisingly, is a sensational wine that consumers need to buy by the case. Dense purple, with notes of creme de cassis, incense, licorice and forest floor, this wine is delicious and full-bodied, with sweet tannins, low acidity, copious fruit and exceptional concentration. Bid on this bottle of 2005 Domaine Comte Armand Pommard 1er Cru "Clos des Epeneaux" ((94-96RP), 94BH, 93ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux was still in three lots segregated by age and location of vines when I tasted – each fascinatingly delicious in itself, and the concentration of the old vines portion in itself almost too severe. Fascinating dark berry, carnal and mineral notes mingle in the nose. Low-tone sirloin meatiness, black cherry, cassis, faintly bitter black chocolate, and toasted hickory inform a glycerin-rich, polished, yet firmly structured palate. Notes of licorice, horehound, and mineral salts add complexity to a finish of palate-staining intensity and grip. This superb Pommard should require 5-7 years of cellaring and reward considerably more." (04/2007)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2008 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Beaux Bruns is turning into a beautiful Burgundy. There are plenty of bright red berries, raspberry and wild strawberry on the seamless nose, with a hint of marmalade loitering in the background. The palate displays fine concentration, quite powerful and perhaps more masculine than Ghislaine Barthod’s usual style, but it is adorned with a compelling spicy finish. I had a chance recently to taste through wines from a representative sampling of these middle-range St-Émilion producers, from both the 2010 and 2009 vintages. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1996 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac (98RP, 97JS, 96ST, 95WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Lafite-Rothschild was remarkably deep in color considering that it is now 20 years in age. The bouquet is classic Pauillac with pencil shavings and sous-bois infusing the black fruit, masculine and a little aloof, yet focused and very well delineated. The palate is very well balanced with crisp blackberry and boysenberry fruit, spicier than I recollect, a crescendo of flavors so that it seems understated at first but fans out with a sense of confidence towards the finish. I think this still has more to give so cellar it away for another 5-8 years if you can, but otherwise this is an exemplary Lafite-Rothschild that I can envisage getting better and better in bottle, if not quite as enthralling as either Mouton-Rothschild or Château Margaux. It now feels foursquare and correct. Those same adjectives can be applied to the palate that has a distinct tertiary persona, slightly dry tannin and showing some attenuation towards the finish. I suspect that large formats might replicate some of the joy I found in the 1966 a few years ago, but regular bottles should be consumed sooner rather than later. (NM)" (03/2017)

1966 Beychevelle, St-Julien

John Gilman: "Beychevelle in this era has to be one of the great unsung stars of the Médoc, and the 1966 is certainly one of the prettiest and most stunning bottles that I have tasted from this lovely château. The nose on the ’66 Beychevelle absolutely soars from the glass in a brilliant mélange of black berries, raspberries, a classic touch of Beychevelle meatiness, anise, black truffles, a whiff of mint leaf, a lovely base of earth and a pungent topnote of violet. On the palate the wine is medium-full, elegant and refined, with lovely intensity of flavor, flawless balance, and a very long, meltingly tannic, utterly refined and bouncy finish. This is one of the great sleepers still to be found in the mature claret market. A hauntingly beautiful bottle of wine cut in the Palmer mold, or more correctly, a classic Beychevelle. The nose is very elegant and well defined, touches of wet wool, honey, wood resin and barley sugar (a la Barsac). I wish it had more vigour and complexity, for it is rather overwhelmed by the Coutet and the Suduiraut. The palate is far better than the nose with a lovely creamy, harmonious texture with perfect acidity and balance. Citrus peel, fresh ginger, dried apricot, ginger and orange sorbet with noticeable residual sugar on the finish. There is an equally good sense of refinement to the ultra-pure and more obviously mineral-inflected flavors that culminate in an understated, clean and beautifully focused and balanced finish that is positively Zen-like in its sense of harmony. 1994 Margaux, Margaux
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1994 Margaux, Margaux (91RP, (90-91ST), 90WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This largely forgotten vintage seems to have turned the corner in the last year or two. Because of strict selections made at the top chateaux, the wines always had density, but the level of tannin was frequently too high, and the type of tannin was more green and astringent. Chateau Margaux's 1994 has always been one of the candidates for the 'wine of the vintage.' The wine still has a dense plum/purple color and a big, sweet nose of black fruits intermixed with licorice, camphor, vanilla, and a hint of flowers. The wine is dense and powerful, but the tannins have softened and do not seem as hard and intrusive as they did in the late nineties. This wine will last for decades and hopefully become even more seamless, although it is hard to believe all the tannin will gradually dissipate. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2025. Last tasted, 10/02. 91+ (RP)" (01/2003)

2007 Olivier Bernstein Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Champ-Gain"
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2007 Olivier Bernstein Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Champ-Gain". Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Bernstein's 2007 Puligny-Montrachet Champ Gain is in your face instantly in its expression of toast, spice, resin, caramel, and vanilla of oak, and at the same time – with a somewhat discordant result – of fresh citrus, tart fruit skin, and sweet corn. Bitter notes – not so sharply focused as those of fruit pit – gain prominence as the wine progresses toward the finish, and while long as well as broad, it lacks the polish exhibited by its Charmes sibling. Make no mistake: there is strong raw material here, expressive in a rather gaudy and as yet unrefined way. And there is the potential for imposing richness harmonizing with sufficient brightness and vivacity. But time will have to tell whether such a felicitous marriage comes about. (DS)" (12/2009)

2003 Pavie-Macquin, St-Emilion
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2003 Pavie-Macquin, St-Emilion (95RP, 93ST, (89-91WE), 91WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "From a cool terroir on clay and limestone soils (the perfect scenario for producing great wine in 2003), the 2003 Pavie Macquin is composed of 84% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon, and achieved 13.8% natural alcohol. Full-bodied, young and vigorous, the wine exhibits a dense blue/black color to the rim along with a stunning nose of asphalt, truffle, blackberry, cassis, lead pencil shavings and forest floor. The super-complex aromatics are followed by an opulent, majestic 2003 with a finish that lasts nearly 45 seconds. One of the superstars of the vintage, it should continue to drink well for 10-15+ years. Bravo! (RP)" (08/2014)

1999 Domaine Leroy Nuits-St-Georges "Allots"
Bid on this bottle of 1999 Domaine Leroy Nuits-St-Georges "Allots" (90RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1999 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Allots from Leroy was still very powerful on the nose with 'thickset' red berry fruit, a hint of blue fruit and a struck match scent that did not quite fit in. The palate is again powerful and dense, in my opinion my reflective of the 1999 growing season rather than the terroir, a village cru straining to flex its muscles and be treated as a premier cru. You admire that ambition, and yet it never quite achieves the nuance and complexity on the finish that would convince you of that. It is undeniably a delicious Aux Allots but one that did not trigger an intellectual or emotional response. Tasted January 2017. (NM)" (02/2017)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2008 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux is far superior to the 2005. It is relatively backward on the nose, but it has startling delineation with open, natural red-berry fruit – predominantly freshly picked strawberries, raspberry and pomegranate. With continued aeration it offers a cheeky hint of white chocolate. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, supple tannins. Bid on this bottle of 2005 Gerard Raphet Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Lavaux St.-Jaques" Cuvee Unique (94RP, (91-93BH)). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "From vines planted in the 1920s, Raphet’s 2005 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux St.-Jacques – of which there are but three and a half barrels – leads with scents of black raspberry and smoked meats. Rich, yet not at all heavy on the palate, it displays lovely sweetness of primary fruit and inner-mouth perfume suggesting flowers and citrus zest. Here one gets multi-dimensional, layered complexity along with elegance. A long, meat- and mineral-dominated finish ultimately culminates in wisps of smoke and a lick of salt. A substantial share of Raphet’s diverse acreage is in the Clos de Vougeot, all of it situated near the route nationale and nearly all in one large block at the north end of the Clos. 1970 Latour, Pauillac

This is certainly one of the better, more representative bottles. Deep garnet in colour, nice limpidity in the glass. It has a beautiful nose that to be honest, sweeps aside the respectable Domaine de Chevalier ’70 poured alongside, like a lord dismissing his servant with a swish of his hand. Graphite, wild black fruit, freshly rolled tobacco and a faint hint of truffle. The palate is medium-bodied and after forty years, still quite austere but the balance is nailed. Masculine and foursquare, a Latour with a lot of horsepower…but not necessarily revving in top gear…at least not after four decades. Lovely cedar and mint on the long, long finish. Wonderful. I do not think this wine will get any better, but a divine vinous experience now. (NM)" (11/2010)

Bid on this bottle of 1978 DRC Romanee Conti (98RP, 95BH, 95WS, 93VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1978 Romanée Conti Grand Cru is a wine that I thought I would never taste. This bottle was served at a private dinner in Beaune with Bertrand de Villaine present. The bottom line is -- it delivered. With a thin tawny rim it shows its age, but the bouquet is truly transcendental, a mixture of red and black fruit such as wild strawberries and raspberry, and a hint of pomegranate all beautifully defined. With aeration it begins to offer more secondary aromas, such as brown sugar and a scent of a Tuscan delicatessen. The palate lives up to expectations with very fine tannins, fresh and tensile with a veneer of shimmering dark plum and raspberry fruit that soon gives way to more meaty notes, almost ferrous towards the finish. It has almost unbearable finesse. Is it a perfect wine? Almost. As much as I could, I drank this, as it is just a sublime and evocative Pinot Noir. Tasted Novembe
