French Wine

When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its regions, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and occasionally as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a 100 lives. To understand and appreciate French wine, you only need to begin tasting them. Check out some of the top picks that our buyers have tracked down - several of these wines are imported directly from France.

2008 Pavie Macquin, St-Emilion
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2008 Pavie Macquin, St-Emilion (94RP, 94WE, 93ST, 93VN, 92JS, 91CG, 91WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Consultants Nicolas Thienpont and Stephane Derenoncourt have produced a beautiful St.-Emilion that tastes like the quintessence of crushed rocks intermixed with blueberry, blackberry, black raspberry, licorice, camphor and truffle notes. This full-bodied effort should drink well in 4-5 years, and last for two decades or more. It achieved 14.5% natural alcohol. (RP) 94+" (05/2011)

1994 Léoville-Las Cases, St-Julien (1.5L)
Bid on this magnum of 1994 Léoville-Las Cases, St-Julien (1.5L) ((92-94VN), 93RP). Vinous: "Excellent deep, saturated color. Sexy aromas of black cherry, cassis, and toasty, smoky oak. Wonderful sweetness and texture, with terrific perfume. More pliable than the '95 Las Cases. Tannins are extremely well integrated for a cabernet-based '94. I don't find the austerity that Delon cites. (ST)" (05/1996)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2011 Domaine de Chevalier Rouge, Pessac-Léognan (94RP, (91-93WE), 92JS, 92WS, 90VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A spectacular effort, especially for this challenging vintage, Olivier Bernard’s 2011 Domaine de Chevalier boasts a dense ruby/purple color as well as a big, sweet bouquet of subtle charcoal, graphite, black currants and black cherries. Rich and full-bodied with a multilayered mouthfeel and a long, complex, stunning finish, this is a profound example of a 2011 from a great terroir. Consume it over the next 20 years. 2010 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 2010 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac (98VN, 96WE, 95RP, 95WS, 94CG, 94JS). Vinous: "An eternal wine, the 2010 Pichon Lalande is a total showstopper. The first impression is one of explosive power, but time in the glass brings out the wine’s more delicate, floral side. Violet, graphite, crème de cassis, licorice and menthol overtones recall the 1996, but the tannins here are much softer, sweeter and more polished. In two recent tastings, the 2010 has been positively stellar. The alternation of hot days and cool nights led to a late harvest. The Cabernet Sauvignon harvest did not start until October 7; by that date in 2009 all the fruit was in. Readers who can still find the 2010 should not hesitate, as it is a modern-day classic. That’s all there is to it. (AG) 98+" (10/2017)

Bid on this bottle of 2006 La Pousse d'Or Volnay 1er Cru "Clos de la Bousse d'Or" (90BH). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "This is less aromatically elegant than the Caillerets but more complex with a layered nose of red and blue pinot fruit, earth and mineral hints that are also reflected back by the nicely rich and full yet detailed flavors that are supple and beautifully textured on the admirably long finish. This is a wine of finesse as the tannins are extremely fine. Lovely juice." (04/2008)

Wine Spectator: "Very perfumed and beautiful, showing blackberry and raspberry aromas, with hints of vanilla. Deep and complex. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a long, powerful finish. Bid on this bottle of 2006 Domaine J-F Mugnier Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru "Clos de Marechale" (92ST, 91BH, 91RP). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Saturated red-ruby color. Pure, vibrant nose features smoky black cherry. Rich, sweet and pure, with superb energy to the flavors of black and red cherry and minerals. Impressively dense, broad wine, finishing with excellent lingering perfume and solid spine for aging. In comparison to this wine, the 2005 version seems a bit easier. (ST)" (03/2009)

Bid on this bottle of 2003 Domaine Faiveley Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru ((93-96BH), 93ST). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Notes of ripe plum, mocha, dark pinot fruit, earth, spice, a bit of wood and wet leather make for a potent and highly expressive nose that complements the massive, incredibly powerful and long flavors that have simply unbelievable intensity and that lovely natural sweetness of the finest burgundies. The flavors just explode in the mouth, displaying wonderful inner mouth perfume and dazzling texture and this literally lingers for minutes. This will one day be a monument and it will need years before it's completely ready so be prepared to have plenty of patience. *Don't miss!* " (01/2005)

2008 Domaine Taupenot-Merme Mazoyeres Chambertin Grand Cru
Bid on this bottle of 2008 Domaine Taupenot-Merme Mazoyeres Chambertin Grand Cru ((92-94RP), 92BH). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted out of barrel at the Domaine. This is more taciturn on the nose compared to the Charmes, darker fruits, more tertiary, undergrowth, Doris plum, dark cherry and a touch of marmalade. Good definition though. The palate is quite rounded on the entry, good acidity, raspberry leaf, strawberry, pomegranate, good acidity, nice grip on the finish, quite assertive and great depth. This is more persuasive than the Charmes at the moment. (NM)" (03/2010)

2005 Brane-Cantenac, Margaux
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2005 Brane-Cantenac, Margaux (95RP, 94WE, 92WS, 91ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A sexy, style of wine from the Lurtons at Brane-Cantenac, this wine (a blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc) has a stunning nose of forest floor, licorice, blackcurrants, plums and spring flowers. Soft tannin, full-bodied opulence and beautifully textured, lush richness, make for a brilliant wine from this large, 180-acre vineyard. In spite of the wine’s stunning forward fragrance and lushness, the color still looks as if it is 3-4 years old, rather than a decade. This is a big-time winner in 2005 and should drink well for at least another 25+ years. (RP)" (06/2015)

Wine Spectator: "Alluring from the get-go, with layers of warmed raspberry, plum and boysenberry confiture pumping along, carried by a remarkably dense but creamy structure. The finish shows hints of rooibos tea, alder and singed pain d'épices, giving this impressive range. Seems like this is just getting warmed up. (JM, Web-2016)"

Bid on this 2-half-bottle lot of 2009 Calon-Ségur, St-Estèphe (375ml) ((93-96WS), 95JS, 94RP, 94ST). Wine Spectator: "Delivers gorgeous aromas of blackberry, blueberry and licorice, with hints of tobacco and spice. Full-bodied, offering a lovely texture and refinement. Very long and beautiful, with tangy acidity and lively fruit. A rich, yet very balanced, Calon. This is almost all Cabernet Sauvignon instead of the normal blend with 40 percent Merlot. The château is now using 100 percent new wood. Like the changes. (Web-2010)"

2010 Larcis Ducasse, St-Emilion
Bid on this bottle of 2010 Larcis Ducasse, St-Emilion (98RP, 97JS, 97VN, 94ST, 94WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The wine boasts 14.6% natural alcohol and is a final blend of roughly three-fourths Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc, cropped at a ridiculously low 19 hectoliters per hectare. Notes of licorice, garrigue, incense, smoked meats, espresso, creme de cassis and blackberry liqueur jump from the glass of this unbelievably intense wine. Remarkably full, with compelling freshness and precision, this is a fabulous effort in 2010. It will probably close down over the next several years, and not re-emerge for at least a decade, something that often happens with the bigger, richer, more muscular St.-Emilions from the limestone hillsides and plateaux. This is one of the superstars of the vintage and a profound wine. Drink it between 2020 and 2045. 98+ (RP)" (02/2013)

2009 Haut-Bailly, Pessac-Léognan (1.5L)
Bid on this magnum of 2009 Haut-Bailly, Pessac-Léognan (1.5L) (100RP, 97JS, 95WE, 94ST, 94WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "... The 2009, which has an opaque ruby/purple color, an extraordinary nose of high-quality unsmoked cigar tobacco, graphite, blackcurrants and spice, hits the palate with a medium to full-bodied, saturated and rich mouthfeel, but an elegant and ethereal quality that is difficult to articulate. It is rich, complex and tastes as if it were the vinous equivalent of a remarkable haute couture creation from the late Coco Chanel. It is full-bodied yet elegant, powerful yet delicate, and remarkably velvety-textured, sumptuous and loaded with upside potential. It can be approached now, as most 2009s tend to be, given their richness of fruit, low acidity and extraordinary concentration, but the great complexity that will emerge from this fabulous terroir is at least a decade away, and this wine is set for 50 or more years of longevity. Kudos to Haut-Bailly! (RP)" (04/20

2009 Léoville-Poyferré, St-Julien
Bid on this bottle of 2009 Léoville-Poyferré, St-Julien (100JD, 100RP, 96JS, 96WE, 95VN, 93WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the more flamboyant and sumptuous wines of the vintage, this inky/purple-colored St.-Julien reveals thrilling levels of opulence, richness and aromatic pleasures. A soaring bouquet of creme de cassis, charcoal, graphite and spring flowers is followed by a super-concentrated wine with silky tannins, stunning amounts of glycerin, a voluptuous, multilayered mouthfeel and nearly 14% natural alcohol. Displaying fabulous definition for such a big, plump, massive, concentrated effort, I suspect the tannin levels are high even though they are largely concealed by lavish amounts of fruit, glycerin and extract. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2040. (RP)" (02/2012)

1982 L'Arrosée, St-Emilion
Bid on this bottle of 1982 L'Arrosée, St-Emilion (95RP, 90WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This was tasted from magnum as it is the only format I have left in the cellar. Some noticeable bricking and amber at the edge are followed by stunning aromatics of loamy soil, underbrush, kirsch, and oak as well as floral undertones. There are no hard edges to be found in this silky wine, just plush notes of jammy black cherries, plums, figs, earth, and spice. Broad and full-bodied with fully melted tannins, good minerality, and a long finish, this is one of the finest l’Arrosees ever made. It has been mature for at least a decade, but shows no signs of falling apart. It will keep for at least another decade. (RP)" (06/2009)

2000 Pichon-Baron, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 2000 Pichon-Baron, Pauillac (97RP, 95JS, 94ST, 94WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2000 Château Pichon Baron is just getting better and better and better. Perhaps the magnum format played its part, but nevertheless...just...wow. This is a millennial Left Bank with the keys to the top drawer. It has an incredibly precise, mineral-driven bouquet with intense black fruit infused with cedar and graphite scents. It just reeks of Pauillac in an almost uncompromising, yet compelling manner. The palate is structured, stylish and effortless, extraordinarily pure and unerringly youthful. This is a Pichon Baron saying, 'You ain't seen nothing yet.' You could broach this now if you wanted, but the clever people will wisely bunker this for another decade and gloat from 2025 onward. (NM)" (07/2016)

2010 Pape Clément, Pessac-Léognan
Bid on this bottle of 2010 Pape Clément, Pessac-Léognan (100RP, 96JS, 95WE, 95WS, 94ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I certainly underrated the 2010 Pape Clement from barrel, rating it only 93-95+. (Thank God I put a 'plus' there!) Having tasted it four times in Bordeaux, and rating it perfect three times and 99 the fourth time, this final blend of 51% Merlot, 47.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 1.5% Petit Verdot is perfection in a bottle. Tipping the scales at 14.5% natural alcohol, there are 8,000 cases of it. Its sublime elegance, the power, the medium to full-bodied texture, the silky tannins, the subtle notes of smoke, lead pencil shavings, black currants, charcoal, camphor, blueberry and cassis fruit are all remarkable. It is a rich, full-throttle wine, but the elegance and the great terroir of Pape Clement come through in abundance. It is slightly more developed and evolved than the 2005 was at a similar point in its evolution, but it certainly needs another 5-7 years to develop f

2000 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 2000 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac (97RP, 96WS, 95JS, 95WE, 94ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Beginning to open magnificently, the still dense purple-colored 2000 reveals a blossoming bouquet of blackberries, cassis, graphite and pen ink. Full-bodied with velvety tannins that have resolved themselves beautifully over the last eleven years, this wine is still an adolescent, but it exhibits admirable purity, texture, mouthfeel and power combined with elegance. One of the all-time great examples of Lynch Bages, the 2000 is just beginning to drink well yet promises to last for another 20-25+ years. (RP)" (08/2011)

2009 Troplong Mondot, St-Émilion
Bid on this bottle of 2009 Troplong Mondot, St-Émilion (99RP, 97WE, 96JS, 95ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "It boasts an inky/purple color along with a gorgeous bouquet of mocha, chocolate, blackberry and cassis fruit, an unctuous texture, a full-bodied, viscous mouthfeel and a skyscraper-like, multilayered finish. This spectacular wine is nearly overwhelming in its richness, thickness and intensity. Once all its baby fat falls away, the terroir characteristics and additional nuances will emerge. This blockbuster, fabulous Troplong Mondot will benefit from 10-15 years of cellaring and keep for three decades or more. It is not shy either, bouncing over the palate with 15.5% natural alcohol. 2010 Cantemerle, Haut-Médoc
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2010 Cantemerle, Haut-Médoc (94JS, 94RP, 92WE, 91WS, 90ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The wine needs a good 7-10 years of cellaring and should keep for 30 more years, but this is the finest Cantemerle I have encountered in my professional career of tasting young vintages (dating back 34 years now). Stunningly deep ruby/purple, with a beautiful nose of spring flowers intermixed with perfumed raspberry and blueberry notes, it exhibits a sort of cool-climate character. Broad, rich and intense on the palate, the wine has plenty of tannins, but they are sweet and well-integrated. Everything is delicately entwined into this beautiful, medium to full-bodied, dense purple wine, which shows stunning character and a prodigious potential for development. This is definitely a major sleeper of the vintage and even better than I thought from barrel. With its 2010, this classified growth located in the southern end of the Medoc may well have made a modern-day version

The additional element in this vintage, and at this stage of the wine’s development, is a dominant wood element. The vanilla and tannins from the wood match well with the concentrated tannins of the fruit, which is dark, dense and tight. This is a wine for long-term aging: in 15 years this will have superb richness. *Cellar Selection* (RV)" (03/2009)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2011 Cheval Blanc is one of the more plump, opulent and sexy Cheval Blancs made over recent vintages, and its forwardness, lusciousness and complexity seemingly suggest this wine is on a fast evolutionary track. The wine exhibits a dense ruby/purple/plum color, a medium to full-bodied opulence, a sumptuous mid-palate (atypical for the vintage), and a lush, heady finish. It is a super, complex, evolved Cheval Blanc that can be drunk now or cellared for 15+ years. Bravo! (RP)" (04/2014)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2010 Pommard Les Pezerolles is deep, dark and sensual, yet it retains an element of gracious elegance that is impossible to miss. The Pommard density and structure is there, but it is balanced by the light de Montille touch. Clean veins of minerality run through the fruit, adding a sense of vibrancy and energy. There is plenty of weight, but absolutely no heaviness. The Pezerolles was made with fully destemmed fruit." (02/2012)

2000 Krug Brut Champagne
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2000 Krug Brut Champagne (98JS, 97W&S, 97WS, 95RP, 95ST, 95VN). James Suckling: "Very fragrant. This has developed bright, ripe red cherry fruit aromas, vanilla cream, sweet roasted almond biscuits, some marzipan, tobacco, lemon meringue and chalky minerals. The palate has an assertive core of fine acidity with more yellow fruits expressed on entry, like peaches and nectarines. Good ripeness, superfine acidity. The redder fruits build as it goes; cherries and raspberries, yellow plums to close. Full of life. Drink now or up to 20 years, it will go the distance." (07/2015)

It is relatively backward on the nose, but it has startling delineation with open, natural red-berry fruit – predominantly freshly picked strawberries, raspberry and pomegranate. With continued aeration it offers a cheeky hint of white chocolate. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, supple tannins. Beams of supporting tannin give the dark purplish flavors striking energy and cut. Graphite, smoke, violet, mint, dark cherry and plum notes continue to open up in the glass. Haut-Batailley is a Pauillac with distinct Saint-Julien leanings, and that is exactly what comes across here. It is also one of the overachievers of the year. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2006 Domaine Ponsot Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes (97RP, (93-96ST), 93BH). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Sweetly ripe black fruits in the nose of the Ponsot 2006 Clos de La Roche Cuvee Vieilles Vignes prepare the way for a more succulently, generously sweet fruit, plush texture, and generally sunny disposition than that presented by the corresponding Clos St.-Denis. Ripe cherry and red currant flood the creamy, silken palate with sweetness, while some of the same notes of citrus oil, floral perfume (here iris), and peat as exhibited in the Clos St.-Denis swirl about, too. Saline, chalky suggestions help offer contrast and a sounding board to the fruit, and this finishes with exhilarating lift, riveting interplay, and phenomenal length. Here is a combination of textural allure and backbone for which velvet gloves and iron fists seem inappropriately mundane -- not merely archaic -- metaphors. Blind -- I must confess (and did, to Ponsot) -- that

"Mademoiselle Tremblay’s forty year-old vines are in the lieu à dit of “Du Dessus”, and she has all of three barrels of this beauty. Two of the barrels are new in this vintage. The wine is lovely on the nose, as it offers up a perfumed mélange of black plums, raspberries, cocoa powder, blood orange, duck, minerals, violets and just a touch of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is fullish, long and pure, with great focus and intensity of flavor, a sappy core, bright, tangy acids, fine tannins, and excellent length and grip on the very long and very pure finish. 1996 d'Issan, Margaux
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1996 d'Issan, Margaux (94JG). John Gilman: "The 1996 Château d’Issan is a superb, young vintage of this fine estate, with the substantial tannins of this vintage on the Left Bank quite well managed and buried in a fine depth of sweet and pure fruit. The bouquet is still on the young side, but beginning to offer up some secondary elements in its constellation of sweet cassis and dark berries, tobacco leaf, a complex base of gravelly soil, a touch of graphite, violets and a nice framing of smoky new wood. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very pure and focused, with a rock solid core of fruit, excellent soil signature, tangy acids, lovely balance and a firm, chewy and ripely tannic finish. The chewy tannins of this vintage are still very much present here, though very nicely integrated, and all this wine seems likely to need is a fair bit more bottle age to allow the tannic backbone to start to peel back. 1993 Pichon-Baron, Pauillac
Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 1993 Pichon-Baron, Pauillac ((88-90RP), 85WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Pichon-Baron has performed brilliantly since 1988. How many Bordeaux estates, at any time this century, can boast that their vineyard produced a wine that was among the top dozen of the region in six consecutive vintages? The 1993 Pichon-Baron displays an impressive, nearly opaque dark ruby/purple color. The pure, sweet nose of smoky wood, combined with ripe cassis fruit and spices is moderately intense. Like most 1993s containing a large percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon, Pichon-Baron is formidably tannic and structured, but also impressively extracted and rich. While it will not possess the pure sweetness of fruit and awesome concentration of the 1989 and 1990, it is a noteworthy success for the vintage. It will require 6-7 years of cellaring and last for 20 years." (02/1995)

It comes from one of the few biodynamic vineyards in Bordeaux, but you are likely to see many more, given the success that Tesseron seems to be having at all levels, both in his vineyards and in his fermentation/winemaking. An astounding, compelling wine with the classic Pauillac nose more often associated with its cross-street neighbor, Mouton-Rothschild, creme de cassis, there are also some violets and other assorted floral notes. Bid on this magnum of 2005 Pavie Macquin, St-Emilion (1.5L) (96RP, 96WS, 95ST, 95VN, 94W&S, 94WE). Wine Spectator: "Terrifically dense, with layers of plum sauce, melted red licorice, raspberry coulis and blackberry pâte de fruit coursing along, but never top-heavy, as alluring floral and incense notes hang in the background. The long, mineral-driven finish keeps everything firmly grounded. Approachable now, but has a ways to go.--Non-blind Pavie Macquin vertical (December 2014). Best from 2019 through 2029. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The medium to dark ruby-colored 2002 Chambolle-Musigny reveals dark cherry aromas as well as a medium-bodied, satin-textured personality. Armed with awesome depth, it is expansive, powerful, yet refined and well-structured. Mocha-laced jammy black fruits can be found throughout its expressive character as well as in its long, sweet, velvety finish. (PR)" (06/2004)

1996 Domaine Comtes Lafon Volnay 1er Cru "Santenots-Du-Milieu"
Bid on this bottle of 1996 Domaine Comtes Lafon Volnay 1er Cru "Santenots-Du-Milieu" (94RP, 92ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is one of Dominique Lafon’s best wines of the 1990s and easily surpasses the 1995. It has a wonderful bouquet that is very focused: raspberry, a touch of cassis, Indian ink and just a suggestion of singed leather. It has a sweet entry on the palate that is underpinned by fine tannins and an elegant, sensual finish that lacquers but never oppresses the mouth. There is wonderful tension and purity in this Volnay, perhaps in some ways auguring the style of wine post-2000. You can drink this now, though I would prefer to leave the 1996 another five years because there is a lot to come. Drink now-2026. (NM)" (12/2013)

2003 Krug Brut Champagne
Bid on this bottle of 2003 Krug Brut Champagne (95JS, 95ST, 94VN, 94WS, 93BH, 92W&S). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Light yellow. Powerful, complex bouquet evokes fresh peach, pear, floral honey, green almond and smoky minerals. Deep, palate-staining citrus and orchard fruit flavors show outstanding vivacity for a hot vintage, picking up ginger and talc notes with air. The strikingly long, sappy finish features zesty orange pith, smoky minerals and an echo of honeysuckle. I'd be in no rush to drink this one. Speaking of waiting, I had the chance to revisit the 2000 Vintage Krug and it has begun to pick up the smoky, weighty and nutty character that long-time fans of this producer crave. It's still plenty young but already unmistakably Krug, with a chewy texture and a sexy floral nuance dominating right now. (JR)" (12/2014)

Bid on this bottle of 2012 Domaine Henri Gouges Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru "Clos des Porrets St-Georges" ((92-94VN), 93WS, (90-92BH), 91RP). Vinous: "The 2012 Nuits St. Georges Clos des Porrets Saint-Georges is beautifully round and supple. Here the fruit is distinctly red-toned, with hints of iron, earthiness, smoke and tobacco that add complexity. The 2012 will be highly appealing young because of its pure density, but it also appears to have the stuffing to age well for a number of years. This is a great showing from Gouges. 2004 Gerard Raphet Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes
Bid on this bottle of 2004 Gerard Raphet Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes (90BH). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A gentle touch of wood serves as a background note for the somber and backward earthy black fruit aromas that lead to palate drenching flavors of solid depth and this really coats the palate with old vine sap. This is a dramatic '04 with such reserves of mid-palate sap that it completely buries the firm tannic spine. It is not notably complex at this point but that will almost certainly come with time in bottle. Perhaps the best raw material in the range." (01/2007)

Of the 2011 Domaine Joseph Roty Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Les Fontenys",Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar writes: "Good dark red. More complex on the nose than the Clos Prieur or Brunelle, offering scents of red cherry, smoke, mocha, minerals and licorice. At once sweet and energetic, with excellent lift and definition to its densely packed black fruit and spice flavors. Sappy, firmly tannic and long on the juicy finish. I quite like this as it's understated, pure and very well balanced and while it's not overly complex at the moment, this may come with time in bottle as the underlying material to do so is clearly here. Wine & Spirits: "This walled vineyard within the premier cru Vignes Franches has been in the Jadot family since 1826, often producing one of the firm’s top wines. The 2010 has the stature of a great Burgundy, buzzing with black raspberry fruit and a prickle of limestone acidity that tempers the weight of the tannins. This feels tight and elastic, already showing its elegance. It feels like it could live for decades." (04/2014)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2009 Haut-Bailly, Pessac-Léognan (98RP, 97JS, 94ST, 94WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A dense ruby/purple-tinged color offers up notes of forest floor, subtle wood smoke, mulberries, black cherries, cassis and a hint of lead pencil shavings. There is even a floral component lurking in the intricate aromatic profile. The wine is medium to full-bodied with wonderful intensity that builds incrementally and has a long, silky, luscious finish. There is plenty of tannin, but it is largely concealed by the wine’s beautiful fruit and ethereal complexity. Given its virtually perfect balance, this brilliant Haut-Bailly should age effortlessly for 3-4 decades. This is a tour de force in winemaking, particularly for readers seeking the quintessential example of a Bordeaux that combines compelling complexity and finesse with significant flavor authority and intensity. Bid on this 375 ml 3-bottle lot of 2007 La Ferme du Mont "Côtes Capelan" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (375ml) (96RP, 90WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The dense ruby/purple-colored, full-bodied 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cotes Capelan is an outrageously rich, complex wine exhibiting beautiful creme de cassis, kirsch, licorice, forest floor, and spring flower-like aromas. It is fresh, voluptuous, and opulent in the mouth, but the fresh acids and vibrancy give it exceptional precision as well as a refreshing style despite its weight, richness, and length. Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2010 La Fleur Morange, St-Emilion (94RP, 93JS, 92VN, 92WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The more traditional cuvee, the 2010 La Fleur Morange is an equal-part blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc from a tiny, 4.5-acre parcel. This is showing better from bottle than it did from barrel. Remarkably, it has 15.5% natural alcohol, which may be the highest level of natural alcohol of any of the wines from the better estates in Bordeaux. Of course, there is not much of it, since yields were 17 hectoliters per hectare, so there are only about 200+ cases of this wine in the marketplace. Dense purple, with oodles of mulberry, black raspberry and violets, this is a beautiful wine, elegant, but at the same time massively fruity, thick, unctuously textured and long. I am sure some serious tannins are lurking beneath in this extravagantly endowed, sumptuously textured Bordeaux. Drink this wine over the next 15+ years. (RP) 94+" (02/2013)

Full-bodied and tannic, but broad, huge, and massive, this wine is still an infant and needs another 7-10 years of cellaring. Bid on this 5-bottle lot of 2008 Trotanoy, Pomerol (96RP, 95JS, 94WE, 93ST, 92WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the superstars of the vintage, the 2008 Trotanoy is a wine that transcends the vintage. Typically, this is not one of the more lush, sexy wines of Pomerol, but rather a muscular, masculine effort, and that’s the case in 2008. A deep purple color is followed by copious amounts of red and black fruit, earth, cedar and forest floor notes. The wine reveals a full-bodied texture, phenomenal concentration for a 2008, plenty of sweet tannin and a terrific finish. 1985 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1985 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac (96JG, 93RP, 90WS). John Gilman: "This was my last bottle of ’85 Lafite out of the cellar, as I only bought three bottles when it was released and dearly wish I had bought more, as the wine is rather more expensive today than it was back in 1987! This is an utterly brilliant year for Lafite and one of my favorite wines of the vintage, as it offers up a deep and very complex nose of cassis, sweet dark berries, a touch of fresh coconut, beautifully complex, gravelly soil tones, cigar smoke, fresh herbs and cedar. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very refined, with a rock solid core of sappy fruit, stunning complexity, impeccable focus and balance, moderate tannins and a fairly powerful finish (particularly for Lafite from this era) that closes with great purity and grip. A brilliant synthesis of the vintage’s plush and suave personality and the inimitable elegance of Lafite. (Drink between 2012-2060)" (09/2014)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 La Petite Eglise, which Denis Durantou poured from magnum since this is how the entire production was bottled, has a precise and fragrant bouquet with crushed stone scents filtering through the red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, tensile and fresh in the mouth, not powerful or deep, but lively and playful from start to finish. This is worth seeking out. (NM)" (10/2016)

I very much like the depth and while the structural elements are certainly firm, there is a sufficiency of extract to buffer them." (01/2011)

The still-dense, fleshy and youthful fruit is melding with more-mature hints of roasted apple wood, briar, espresso and smoldering ash notes that stretch out through the long, richly detailed finish. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Unlike the Beaune Les Perrieres, the 2012 Beaune 1er Cru Les Sizies was completely de-stemmed in 2012. It has a tight nose of brambly black fruit and damp mossy aromas. Sharp brittle tannins and a chalky finish underpin the palate. Maison Ilan is a négociant producer based in Nuits-St-Georges who is dedicated to premier cru and grand cru bottlings in a style that honors traditional Burgundies. The goal in the cellar is to express terroir as clearly as possible by use of open-top wooden tanks, native yeast fermentation, and little-to-no use of pumps or new oak barrels. Allen Meadows on the producer's 2010 vintage: "As the scores and commentaries suggest, he has followed up his highly successful 2009s with really lovely 2010s. He described his efforts and the challenges therein, to procure more grapes from high-quality growers. He has also become more involved with the actual viticulture of those from whom he purchases grapes and hopes that this trend will continue as he, astutely in my view, notes that the more involved he is the better he understands each terroir but also how better to 'feel' the wine that he is making. Of the 2009 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape,Wine Spectator writes: "Sinewy and reserved, with a light dusting of cocoa powder over the tangy damson plum, red licorice and cassis notes. The long, supple finish, with a lovely wafting note of Lapsang souchong tea, is packed with minerality and tight-grained tannins that will need time to fully evolve. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This wine still possesses a dense, youthful, plum/garnet color to the rim, with very little lightening. The first vintage for Pavie under Chantal and Gérard Perse, the 1998 is full-bodied, showing lots of cedar wood, forest floor, roasted herbs, black cherry and blackcurrant and new saddle leather. 2009 Pontet-Canet, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 2009 Pontet-Canet, Pauillac (100JD, 100RP, (98-100WE), 98JS, 96ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "An amazing wine in every sense, this classic, full-bodied Pauillac is the quintessential Pontet Canet from proprietor Alfred Tesseron, who continues to reduce yields and farms his vineyards biodynamically – a rarity in Bordeaux. Black as a moonless night, the 2009 Pontet Canet offers up notes of incense, graphite, smoke, licorice, creme de cassis and blackberries. A wine of irrefutable purity, laser-like precision, colossal weight and richness, and sensational freshness, this is a tour de force in winemaking that is capable of lasting 50 or more years. The tannins are elevated, but they are sweet and beautifully integrated as are the acidity, wood and alcohol (which must be in excess of 14%). This vineyard, which is situated on the high plateau of Pauillac adjacent to Mouton Rothschild, appears to have done everything perfectly in 2009. This cuvee should shut down i

Bid on this 5-half-bottle lot of 2010 Gloria, St-Julien (375ml) (93RP, (90-91JS), 90ST, 90WE, 90WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2010 Gloria is an ass-kicking, fabulous value once again from this estate, which would probably be classified if the 1855 hierarchy of the wines of the Medoc were ever done again. Abundant notes of cedar wood, fruitcake, flowers, creme de cassis and kirsch are all present in this full-bodied, opulent, dense, dark ruby/purple wine. It is slightly more restrained than the flamboyant 2009, but equal in quality. This is a juicy, well-proportioned, sensationally concentrated, super-ripe Gloria to drink over the next decades. Of course, it is a sleeper of the vintage, given the reasonable price it normally sells for. (RP)" (02/2013)

The dazzlingly explosive aromatic display is followed by a creamy-textured, medium to full-bodied, beautifully-layered wine with no hard edges. Wine Spectator: "This unfurls with amazing grace, as refined tannins let the warmed cassis, macerated plum, pain d'épices, melted licorice, roasted alder and smoldering tobacco notes drape together and hang endlessly on the finish. A stunner that has been stuck at at this sublime point for a while, with no signs of moving any time soon. Thoroughly sublime and still the modern-era high-water mark for these wines. The wood aging is still showing, although that will integrate into the great structure that holds up the ripe black currant fruits. 1986 Haut-Brion, Pessac-Léognan
Bid on this bottle of 1986 Haut-Brion, Pessac-Léognan (96JS, 93RP). James Suckling: "I tasted this at a fun restaurant in Bordeaux called Le Père Ouvrard in the Bouscaut neighborhood. The 1986 was a great vintage for the Médoc but less so for Pessac-Léognan, partly because an early torrent of rains wrought havoc for wines with more merlot in their blends. Many of the 1986s are starting to fall apart, but the La Mission was holding on nicely with dark berries, currants, iodine and oyster shell. It was full-bodied, very soft, very silky and ended with a fresh finish. It’s a wine definitely on a holding pattern." (06/2016)

Bid on this 5-bottle lot of 2008 Troplong Mondot, St-Emilion (96RP, 93JS, 93ST, 91WE, 91WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A wine of the vintage candidate in 2008, Troplong Mondot's offering was produced from yields of 41 hectoliters per hectare and achieved 14.5% natural alcohol. A classic blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, it offers copious quantities of blue and black fruits, a full-bodied opulence, sweet tannin and a fabulous texture as well as finish. Already drinking beautifully, it will be even better in 2-5 years and should last for 20 years. A great effort for the vintage, it couldn’t happen to a more deserving proprietor, Christine Valette. Still young, it blends almost equal amounts of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay fleshed out with Pinot Meunier. The minerality and the rich apple and green fruits are balanced, and acidity cuts into the wine with a pure, perfumed line of freshness. Deeper, richer and more concentrated than the 2009, it offers classic notes of framboise, kirsch, black cherries, garrigue and incense in a full-bodied, multi-dimensional and layered style that just begs to be drunk. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Nuits-St.-Georges Les St.-Georges again illustrates roasted richness and a seamless meld of meat, fruit and mineral. Hints of tar and toasted pecan add further aromatic complexity. Dramatically expansive and mouth-coating, with endless variations – distilled, fresh, sorbet-like – on black cherry, purple plum, and their pits, this wine weaves tar, iodine, and chalk into its supremely long finish. The incipiently velvety texture and fineness of tannin are remarkable for so young a wine. 2003 Montrose, St-Estèphe
Bid on this bottle of 2003 Montrose, St-Estèphe (98RP, 97JS, 96VN, 95WE, 95WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2003 Montrose was served blind in Bordeaux on two occasions. Picked between 11 to 26 September, it is a blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. It remains one of the outstanding wines of a very black and white vintage. Without knowledge of the vintage, I was hesitant to suggest 2003, because though there is clearly fruit intensity locked up inside this Saint Estèphe, it is counterbalanced by the estate's trademark masculinity and austerity. So both on the nose and the palate it reaches this happy medium: pure blackberry, graphite and roasted herbs on the nose, perhaps even more elegant than I have observed on previous bottles. The palate is medium-bodied rather than full bodied with sturdy tannins couched in layers of seamless blackberry and cassis fruit, offset by scents of tobacco and graphite. As usual it has immense length a

Juicy star anise notes and a swath of well-roasted apple wood add even more range on the finish, which is seriously long. Just ever so slightly woodsy in the end, but a terrific showing. Full-bodied, with fabulous richness, texture and tremendous freshness, this first-growth-like effort is more developed than the uber-powerful 2010. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2011 Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Malconsorts (which Mounir described as a 'non-stop' i.e. mercurial) has a very classy bouquet, fine mineralite and depth. This is very complex, more so vis-a-vis the 2011 Suchots. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip, very fine acidity, and bright blackberry and raspberry fruit interlaced with citrus fruit, followed by a wonderful tense, quite structured finish. This is a 'serious' Malconsorts full of breeding and class. Drink 2016-2033. (NM)" (04/2014)

Of the 2011 Maison Ilan Morey-St-Denis 1er Cru "Les Chaffots",As described by Californian owner Ray Walker, "Maison Ilan is a micro-négociant winery, sourcing small lots of Pinot Noir fruit from the Côte de Nuits region in Burgundy, dedicated to exceptional premier and grand cru vineyards. The winery is located in Nuits-St-Georges, France." The premier cru site of 'Les Chaffots' is positioned on the Morey-Saint-Denis hillside directly above the grand cru of Clos-Saint-Denis. The slightly higher elevation allows for cooler temperatures to protect the grape's natural acidity and gracefulness, and the rocky terroir similar to Clos-Saint-Denis and Clos de la Roche contributes veins of minerality and internal structure within the vibrant, deep fruit.

2001 Domaine de Beaurenard "Cuvée Boisrenard" Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2001 Domaine de Beaurenard "Cuvée Boisrenard" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (97RP, 95WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "There have been a number of spectacular vintages of Domaine de Beaurenard’s luxury cuvee, Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Boisrenard, but the 2001 may be the finest they have ever produced. An inky/purple color is accompanied by aromas of creme de cassis, melted licorice, graphite, and a touch of barrique. The explosive bouquet is followed by an expansive, full-bodied, powerful wine with great purity, tremendous multilayered flavor intensity, and beautifully integrated wood, acidity, and tannin. It possesses structure, grip, and a finish that lasts well over a minute. Despite its enormous richness and presence (aromatically and on the palate), it requires 2-3 years of cellaring, and should keep for 15-18. It is a brilliant success! (RP)" (02/2004)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2010 Cuvée du Vatican "Chateau Sixtine" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (96RP, 94WS, 92ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2010 Chateau Sixtine Chateauneuf du Pape performed exquisitely and, again, was one of the top wines of the vintage. With better integration of the new oak than I have previously seen from Jean-Marc Diffonty, this wine's opaque ruby/purple color possesses lots of licorice, asphalt, graphite, blackberry and kirsch notes as well as hints of lavender, forest floor and garrigue. This opulent, full-bodied effort is approachable, but it will not hit its full stride for another 2-4 years. It should drink well for 15-20 years thereafter. This is one of Chateauneuf du Pape's ancient estates (the recorded history dates back to 1673), long owned by the Diffonty family (presently by Jean-Marc). Their first Chateauneuf du Pape was sold under the estate name in 1902. Jean-Marc is an innovative visionary and when he took over for his father, he invested heavil

Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 2010 Domaine de la Vieille Julienne "Les Trois Sources" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (96RP, 94ST, 94WS, 93JD). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Trois Sources comes from the estate's vineyards planted in sandy soils. About 10,000 bottles have been produced. One of the great wines of the vintage, this unbelievable Chateauneuf is still extremely young and primary. Its opaque purple color is followed by scents of ink, acacia flowers, blueberries, black raspberries and blackberries. While full-bodied, extremely concentrated and massive, the wine is totally harmonious with beautifully integrated acidity, tannin and alcohol (which is no doubt in excess of 16%). Give this 2010 five more years of cellaring and drink it over the following 20-25 years. (RP)" (10/2012)

Wine Spectator: "This extremely dense red delivers layers of melted fig, mulled boysenberry and black currant fruit, all laced with notes of charred mesquite, hoisin sauce and Kenya AA coffee. The long, silky mouthfeel belies the latent power in reserve and there's a lot of it, with waves of grip driving the finish. Best from 2010 through 2030. *Collectibles* (JM)" (12/2009)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Gazin’s 2008, a structured, masculine style of Pomerol, reveals a dense plum/purple color in addition to a gorgeous perfume of licorice, mocha, black currants, plums and Asian spices. Firm, dense and full-bodied with stunning concentration, it represents a hypothetical blend of its two near-by neighbors, Lafleur and Petrus. Congratulations to Gazin on another fabulous effort that still seems to be under most consumers’ radar. The 2008 should drink well for 20-25 years. (RP)" (05/2011)

Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2005 Domaine Grand Veneur "Les Origines" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (95RP, 93WS, 92VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "While the Vieilles Vignes bottling wasn’t made until 2006, the 2005 Châteauneuf du Pape Les Origines goes all the way back to 1998. The 2005 checks in as a blend of 55% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre and 15% Syrah that saw 16 months in 55% concrete tank and 45% in smaller barrels. It’s a ripe, full-throttle effort that gives up lots of roasted herbs, pan drippings, black licorice and darker fruits on the nose. This is followed by a medium to full-bodied, blockbuster styled effort that has beautiful purity, lots of texture and a sexy, hard-to-resist style. Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2010 Domaine de la Côte de L'Ange "Vieilles Vignes" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (96RP, 94WS, 92ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "If you can find any, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes, which comes from nearly 80-year-old vines planted in sandy and limestone soils, is a blend of 85% Grenache aged in foudres and 15% Mourvedre aged in small oak casks. The 2007 version of this wine is prodigious, but this is close and may even eclipse that wine, but time will be the final arbiter. Dense purple, with a full-bodied mouthfeel, loads of blackberry fruit, intense kirsch, oodles of licorice, lavender, and garrigue notes, this is layered, sumptuous, full-throttle wine with good acidity, sweet, moderate tannin, and a skyscraper-like mouthfeel and finish. What is now a more nonchalant intensity in the aroma was, in fact, too much to handle when we tasted this last year, as if the wine had no time for mere humans with their limited sense receptors. If you stop to taste ripe pear, ginger spice, apple blossom and butterscotch the wine leaves you lost in random flavor descriptors as it soars off into a vinous glow that lasts for minutes. This may well be the greatest vintage wine of Henri Krug's career (unless it is challenged by the 2002). Bid on this bottle of 2003 Margaux, Margaux (97JS, 97RP, 96ST, 96WE, 95WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted blind as a vintage comparison at the Valandraud vertical, the 2003 Margaux is fully mature on the nose. There is ample fruit here, well defined for the vintage with blackberry and cedar, this bottle demonstrating a subtle fungal character that I have not discerned in previous bottles. There are faint scents of rust iron piping that develop with further aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly dry tannin, offering more fruit than the 2003 Valandraud it was paired with: feisty black pepper and allspice finish with a decent aftertaste. There might be better bottles than this, even so, there is probably not another Margaux that touches this First Growth. I see no harm in broaching bottles now and over the next ten years. This estate does not allow tasting from cask (where the wine spends 42 months), and it is not released until five years after the vintage. The 1998 Yquem (95 points) is a great success. Made in an elegant style...It is well-delineated, with wonderfully sweet aromas of creme brulee, pineapples, apricots, and white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, it is not as sweet as the biggest/richest Yquem vintages, but it is gorgeously pure, precise, and strikingly complex. 1966 Dom Perignon Oenotheque Brut
Bid on this bottle of 1966 Dom Perignon Oenotheque Brut. This is a recently disgorged bottle direct from the cellars of Moet in Epernay. 1966 was a great vintage in Champagne, one to compare to 1988 in the eighties or 1973 in the seventies. Moet had even better access to the best fruit in Champagne in these days, since so few groweres were producing independently... Add on the better quality of massal selected (as opposed to clonal) vineyards, less chemical intervention and much smaller amount of Dom being produced and you begin to see the reason this bottle is so dear! 2003 Delas "Les Bessards" Hermitage
Bid on this 5-bottle lot of 2003 Delas "Les Bessards" Hermitage (97RP, 97WS, 95WE, 93W&S, 92ST). Wine Spectator: "Tremendous depth of fruit right from the start, with layers of freshly crushed blackberry, fig paste and currant confiture, all carried by seamless, fine-grained tannins while truffle and cocoa notes fill out the background. Enthralling finish is stretched out by underlying minerality and exotic spice notes, but still remains firmly planted in its terroir. Drink now through 2030. (JM)" (05/2006)

I can't get over the perfumed aromas of subtle milk chocolate, cedar and sweet tobacco. Full-bodied, yet so refined and silky, lasting for minutes on the palate. Everything is in just the right proportion. This is a wine that will go on forever. I love it. One of my great loves in the wine world. (JS)" (01/2010)

2015 Domaine François Mikulski Bourgogne Blanc
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2015 Domaine François Mikulski Bourgogne Blanc (86BH, 86RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2015 Bourgogne Blanc has been bottled in October 2016. It has a satisfactory honeysuckle and frangipane-scented bouquet even though it would benefit from a little more delineation. The palate is well balanced with a pleasant tang of orange rind on the entry. There is commendable weight in the mouth and the detail on the finish is commensurate with expectations. Enjoy this over the next 2-3 years. (NM)" (12/2016)

2005 Pontet-Canet, Pauillac
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2005 Pontet-Canet, Pauillac (97JD, 97RP, 96WS, 95DC, 95VN, 94WE). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the Pontet-Canet vertical in London, the 2005 Château Pontet-Canet has long been one of the stars of the vintage and this might well be the best of over a dozen showings of this wine. However, do not expect ostentation on the nose. This is 2005 and like many wines of this vintage, even with considerable decanting, it remained broody and introspective on the nose, as if it is checking you out and seeing if you are worthy. Once you have been accepted, then it swings the doors open to reveal gorgeous scents of blackberry, briary and cassis fruit, perhaps a little more sous-bois than I have noticed compared to previous bottles. The palate is medium-bodied, but dense and structured—certainly a more masculine Pontet-Canet built for long-term ageing. Yet it retains marvelous freshness and vitality all the way through to the pencil-lead, quite saline finish. I

2005 Pavie Macquin, St-Emilion
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2005 Pavie Macquin, St-Emilion (96RP, 96WS, 95ST, 94W&S, 94WE). Approachable now, but has a ways to go. (JM, Web-2015)"
