French Wine

When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its regions, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and occasionally as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a 100 lives. To understand and appreciate French wine, you only need to begin tasting them. Check out some of the top picks that our buyers have tracked down - several of these wines are imported directly from France.

2011 Domaine Coche-Dury Meursault "Les Rougeots"
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2011 Domaine Coche-Dury Meursault "Les Rougeots" (93RP, (91-93VN), 92ST, 90BH). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2011 Meursault Les Rougeots has an intense flinty bouquet with touches of smoke emerging with time, the oak just loitering in the background and not obfuscating any terroir expression. The palate is very precise and subtle with tangerine and citrus peel, hints of blackberry leaf emerging toward the finish. Like many vintages of Rougeot, it needs a little coaxing but is worth the wait. Excellent. Drink 2016-2033. (NM)" (04/2014)

2005 Angélus, St-Emilion (1.5L)
Bid on this magnum lot of 2005 Angélus, St-Emilion (1.5L) (100RP, 97VN, 96ST, 96W&S, 96WS, 95CG). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Truly great stuff, this wine performed at a three-digit level both in the horizontal tasting of 2005s in Baltimore, as well as in Montreal at this mini-vertical. This sensational, opaque, bluish/purple wine offers up notes of vanillin, spring flowers, blueberry and blackberry liqueur, plus a touch of licorice. The wine hits the palate with a thunderous cascade of ripe, rich, concentrated fruit. It is full-bodied, multidimensional and layered. The tannins are beautifully integrated but still present, and the wood, acidity, alcohol, etc., are all beautifully assimilated in this magnificent, majestic vintage of Angelus. It can be drunk now, but it is still an adolescent and that suggests it has at least another 25-35 years of longevity. (RP)" (08/2015)

Bid on this bottle of 1964 DRC Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands-Echézeaux Grand Cru (94BH, 92RP, 92VN). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Rich, opulent and wonderfully complex spice and rich, earthy, somewhat animale aromas followed by very long, intense, robust yet classy and sleek, velvety flavors. Classy, gorgeously complex and impressive as hell with a touch of finishing muscle and fantastic length. A flat out great example of the vineyard and one this is drinking perfectly now though well stored bottles will continue to hold without any problem. " (01/2004)

1959 Latour, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1959 Latour, Pauillac (99JG, 98WS, 96RP). John Gilman: "This is a great, great vintage of Latour from an era where the estate was at the absolute top of its game and made one of Bordeaux’s best wines year in and year out, with a track record of consistent excellence that no other First Growth could match. Given the longevity of Latour in this era, it is not surprising that the 1959 is still a tad on the young side at age fifty-eight and takes some extended time in decanter to fully blossom, but once it has opened up, its brilliance is very easy to see. The bouquet is complex, ripe and beautiful, offering up scents of black cherries, cassis, sweet cigar wrapper, a very complex base of soil, tobacco smoke and a nice touch of Latour nuttiness in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and powerful, with a rock solid core of plush fruit, great focus and grip, really impressive acidity for the ripe ’59 vintage and a very, very long, complex and

1964 Petrus, Pomerol
Bid on this bottle of 1964 Petrus, Pomerol (99RP, 94JG, 94WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A mammoth Petrus of stupendous extraction and power, this wine seems to be aging at a glacier pace. I suppose the 1975 is somewhat similar in style, with high levels of tannin and equally impressive levels of richness. This wine has a dark, murky garnet color with some orange and rust at the edge. The spectacular aromatics soar from the glass, offering up roasted herbs, espresso coffee, mocha, caramel, and plenty of jammy red and black fruits. A huge, viscous, spectacularly concentrated wine that is almost over the top in a style that even wine administrator Christian Moueix would probably find too big and intense for his more delicately styled taste. Nevertheless, lucky owners of this Petrus have decades of thrills still ahead of them. This is spectacular stuff! Anticipated maturity: Now-2030. (RP)" (11/2002)

I can't get over the perfumed aromas of subtle milk chocolate, cedar and sweet tobacco. Full-bodied, yet so refined and silky, lasting for minutes on the palate. Everything is in just the right proportion. This is a wine that will go on forever. I love it. One of my great loves in the wine world. (JS, Web Only-2010)"

2000 Lagrange, St-Julien
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2000 Lagrange, St-Julien (93JS, 93RP, 93W&S, 93WS, 92ST). Wine Spectator: "This is a muscular red, rippling with bramble-edged tannins that push the dense core of blackberry, fig and boysenberry fruit paste flavors along. Juicy star anise notes and a swath of well-roasted apple wood add even more range on the finish, which is seriously long. Just ever so slightly woodsy in the end, but a terrific showing. Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2000 Léoville-Las-Cases, St-Julien (100JS, 100WS, 98RP, 97WE, 95ST, 95W&S). Wine Spectator: "Absolutely fantastic. This is one of the most exciting young reds I have tasted in a long, long time. It shows intense aromas of berries, currants and minerals, with hints of mint. Full-bodied and packed with fruit and tannins, its long finish is refined and silky. A benchmark for the vintage. Las Cases has always wanted to make first-growth quality in a top-notch vintage, and it certainly did in 2000. *Collectibles, Ranked #5 on the Top 100 of 2003* (JS)" (03/2003)

2001 Ponsot Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes (375ml)
Bid on this 8-half-bottle lot of 2001 Ponsot Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes (375ml) (93BH). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Classic ruby with no bricking. A maturing and highly complex and nuanced nose of red and black cherry fruit aromas nuanced by spice, damp earth and game notes leads to medium weight, sappy, refined and intense flavors that display outstanding precision and superb length. This is ripe and pure and finishes with a very appealing stony quality to complement the outstanding persistence. For my taste, this has reached a stage where it could be drunk now with pleasure or held for another 3-ish plus years first. A really lovely and harmonious effort. Drink from 2018+" (04/2015)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A very strong effort for Gruaud Larose, possibly eclipsed by what they have done in 2009, this is a pure, full-bodied Gruaud Larose with plenty of new saddle leather, cedar wood, black currants, cherries, licorice, and Provencal herbs. Spicy, earthy, full-bodied, and rich, it has hit its plateau of full maturity, where it should stay for another 20 or more years. (RP)" (06/2010)

Bid on this 12-bottle lot of 2003 Duhart-Milon, Pauillac (OWC - 94RP, 93JS, 92WS) in original wood. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Consumers should take note as this estate is clearly benefiting from increased attention from the Rothschilds. The 2003 may be the finest Duhart-Milon made ... ever! A blend of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon and 27% Merlot, it boasts a deep ruby/purple hue in addition to a big, sweet perfume of black fruits interwoven with roasted herbs and meat juice offered in a muscular, full-bodied style. Full-bodied, dense, and well-structured, this stunning cuvee is best consumed between 2010-2030.A spectacular wine, and one that could have been bought for a song when it was released, this blend of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon and 27% Merlot was cropped at 33 hectoliters per hectare. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The wine out distances both Leoville Las Cases and Leoville Barton, but all three of them are compelling efforts. Full-bodied, dense purple in color, with floral notes intermixed with blackberries, cassis, graphite and spring flowers, this full-bodied, legendary effort is long and opulent, with wonderfully abundant yet sweet tannin, a skyscraper-like mid-palate and a thrilling, nearly one-minute finish. 2007 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru "Vaudésir"
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2007 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru "Vaudésir" (94BH, 93RP, 93VN, 92WS). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "This is even more elegant than it usually is, which is saying something as there is a good argument to be made that the Fèvre Vaudésir is the current reference standard for the vineyard though I hasten to add that it's by no means an open and shut case. A pure and almost delicate nose that is decidedly more austere than virtually any of the preceding wines opens with a classic green fruit aromatic profile brimming with Chablis character that is followed by rich, full, naturally sweet and equally powerful flavors of simply incredible purity and focus as they finish with outstanding intensity that is borderline painful. This is a dramatic wine yet perfectly composed with a pronounced stony quality and the backend is bone dry and almost salty." (10/2009)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2005 Pontet-Canet, Pauillac (97RP, 96WS, 95ST, 94WE). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Possibly the youngest wine of all the 2005 Médocs in terms of its evolution, at age 10 the inky purple 2005 Pontet-Canet tastes more like a two-year-old wine. Loads of pure blueberry, blackberry and cassis fruit are present along with a hint of licorice and background oak. It is full-bodied, ripe, and excruciatingly fresh, vigorous and exuberant. This is a tour de force, and a sensational effort that rivals the first growths. Give it another 5-10 years of cellaring, and drink it over the following 30-40 years. 97+ points." (06/2015)

A very solid villages and worth a look." (01/2007)

1970 Duhart-Milon, Pauillac (1.5L)
Bid on this magnum lot of 1970 Duhart-Milon, Pauillac (1.5L). In 1962, Duhart-Milon was a mess. Luckily, the Rothschild family saw an opportunity to revitalize the estate and bought up the property, cleared the land, replanted and renovated the estate. Using the same vines, technology, and skill that has brought their other properties to such prominence, Duhart-Milon was quickly revived and regained the quality that had won it the honor of fourth growth status in the 1855 classification. By 1970, Duhart-Milon was back on track and was producing excellent age-worthy wines. 2006 Domaine Dominique Mugneret Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru "Chaumes"
Bid on this bottle of 2006 Domaine Dominique Mugneret Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru "Chaumes". Allen Meadows writes: "As to the 2006 vintage, Mugneret told me that he began picking on 'September 23rd and it was necessary to do a severe sorting as there were a lot of under ripe berries and in a few cases, hail damaged fruit as well. Quantities were about the same as in 2005, which is to say not a lot with sugars that ranged from 12.5 to 13%. The phenolic ripeness was good if not perfect and I did a slightly softer vinification with a 15 to 18 day total cuvaison. The '06s are pretty and actually more terroir-driven than the '05s though it's hard to argue that they're better.' Mugneret had told me previously that he has reduced the toast levels on new barrels and that change has been a good one as the wood influence is more integrated and less intrusive, which with some of Mugneret's prior vintages, it could get in the way."

Just a flat out sensational bottle of wine, it offers tons of black currants, licorice, roasted meats and toasted spice aromas and flavors in a full-bodied, seamless, perfectly balanced style that’s drunk well since release. Bid on this bottle of 2006 Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg Vosne-Romanée (91JG). John Gilman: "No wine has moved up in quality more in the last several years chez Mugneret than the Vosne AC, which is now clearly the finest village wine made in the commune and amongst the best village wines in the entire Côte d’Or. The nose on the 2006 is beautiful, as it offers up notes of red and black plums, black raspberry, cocoa, blood orange, lovely minerality, vanilla and a topnote of woodsmoke. On the palate the wine is fullish, long and tangy, with lovely intensity of flavor, impressive complexity, ripe tannins and bouncy acidity on the long, classy finish. Bid on this bottle of 2005 Domaine Marius Delarche Corton-Renardes Grand Cru Reserve Vieilles Vignes. About the domain: "Burgundy from Domaine Marius Delarche stands as an example of what great wine can and should be: both memorable and affordable. We first came across the family’s tiny cellars in Pernand-Vergelesses in the early 1990s, and honestly couldn’t believe what we saw, or tasted. Hidden away in this peaceful valley in the shadow of the noble hill of Corton was certainly the Côte de Beaune’s best-kept secret—gorgeous wines made by an honest winemaker for prices that reminded of decades past." (From the importer) The 50-year old vines of the Corton-Renardes were planted near the summit of the noble hill of Corton. Look for a brooding and layered character, with notes of licorice and peppery spice.

2012 Domaine Marius Delarche Corton-Charlemagne Reserve Grand Cru
Bid on this bottle of 2012 Domaine Marius Delarche Corton-Charlemagne Reserve Grand Cru. Philippe and Etienne Delarche run a family estate of 9 hectares in the villages of Pernand-Vergelesses and Aloxe-Corton. The harvest is hand-picked and the wines made in the traditional manner. The grapes are pressed and the must left to settle. Fermentation takes place in small vats at a temperature not exceeding 20°C for the Pernands while the Corton-Charlemagnes go straight into barrels. All the wines spend a minimum of 12 months in barrels. They have subtle aromas and are well-balanced with spicy, mineral flavours. Young Etienne Delarche has been making ever more elegant wines since he took over the reins here.

1953 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1953 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac (95RP, 94WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I remember a friend of mine decanting a magnum of the 1953 and sticking it under my nose to share with me the incredible bouquet. In addition to the exotic aromas of soy sauce, new saddle leather, cassis, herbs, and spices, the 1953 offers a deep ruby color with some amber at the edge. Sweet and fat, with voluptuously-textured fruit, this low acid wine has no noticeable tannin. While it may be living dangerously, it is a decadent treat if it is drunk immediately after decanting. By contrast there is a superb sense of energy and strikingly good detail to the penetratingly mineral-driven medium-bodied flavors that display an incredibly refined and ultra-pure mouth feel on the deeply complex and gorgeously persistent finish. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This bright, dark ruby-colored wine is exceptional. Its enticing nose reveals extraordinarily refined aromas of a myriad of flowers soaked in cherries, blueberries and traces of sweet mocha. This oily-textured, full-bodied, perfectly harmonious, and compellingly delineated wine could not be any more elegant. It possesses awesome depth, concentration, and purity in its violet and cherry cream pie-flavored personality. Moreover, its formidably long finish displays a strong yet satiny backbone. 1982 Margaux, Margaux
Bid on this bottle of 1982 Margaux, Margaux (97JS, 97RP, 97VN, 96ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1982 Chateau Margaux is a wine that I have tasted many times, constantly contrasted against the 1983 to see which is better. Frankly I found that it depends on the bottle, although maybe the 1983 edges it. But it is important to assess the 1982 on its own individual merits because it is a superb First Growth. This was a great bottle: fragrant and beautifully defined on the nose that on this occasion offered a more conspicuous graphite scent, which lent it a Pauillac-like personality. Allowing the wine to open and aerate, the traits one associates with the property emerge—wilted violets and rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and mineral-laden, that suggestion of candied orange peel on the entry segueing into layers of pure red and black fruit. There is always something effortless about this Chateau Margaux and the pixelation on the finish is up there with the very best.

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2000 Pichon-Baron, Pauillac (97RP, 94ST, 94WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2000 Château Pichon Baron is just getting better and better and better. Perhaps the magnum format played its part, but nevertheless...just...wow. This is a millennial Left Bank with the keys to the top drawer. It has an incredibly precise, mineral-driven bouquet with intense black fruit infused with cedar and graphite scents. It just reeks of Pauillac in an almost uncompromising, yet compelling manner. The palate is structured, stylish and effortless, extraordinarily pure and unerringly youthful. This is a Pichon Baron saying, "You ain't seen nothing yet." Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A mature yet attractively fresh nose offers up floral, earthy and spicy red berry fruit aromas that are showing traces of secondary development and are trimmed in just enough wood to notice. There is a really lovely mouth feel to the beautifully well-detailed middle weight flavors that display a subtle mineral streak before culminating in a complex, balanced and lingering finish where a touch of the wood influence resurfaces. There isn't much unresolved tannin remaining and for my taste this has arrived on the front edge of its peak drinkability though it should remain here for at least another decade. 2001 is an elegant vintage for this wine and I very much like it." Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1999 Clos des Ruchottes is tussling with the 1996 as the best of the decade. Lucid, almost iridescent in color, the bouquet explodes across the sky with voluptuous aromas of cassis, black cherries and vanilla pod. Brilliantly defined and focused, it is utterly beguiling. The palate is very well balanced with silky smooth tannins that just glide across the mouth. Cashmere! It fans out gloriously toward its crescendo with lush plum and blackberry notes, but underneath there is a minerally core to counterbalance the sheer sexiness of this wine. Huge, superripe nose combines black plum, brown spices, mocha, chocolate and roasted herbs. Voluptuous, superripe and very sweet, with a lushness of texture rare for young Bonnes-Mares. This has freshness and thrust, thanks to the inherent structure of this grand cru, but seems almost too sweet for Bonnes-Mares. Finishes very long, with sweet, fine, building tannins. Owned by Michel Gracia and consisting of less than five acres of vines, it turned out a final blend in 2005 of 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, but only 5,000 bottles were produced. A wine pushing for perfection, notes of blueberry and blackberry dominate, but also underlying the fruit is a strong core of minerality and flowers. Wine Enthusiast: " *Editors' Choice* One of the big names of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and this wine justifies the fame of the Perrin family’s property. It is a rich style, but, more importantly, it is beautifully made, structured, dense, with red jelly fruits, a touch of vanilla and a fat, full-bodied, but firm aftertaste. It boasts an opaque black/purple color as well as a classic Leoville Las Cases display of lead pencil, gorgeously pure black raspberries and cherries, smoke, and graphite. A broad yet focused entry on the palate reveals firm tannin, medium to full body, superb concentration and purity, as well as a totally symmetrical mouthfeel. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2025. Bid on this bottle of 2006 Calon-Ségur, St-Estèphe (93RP, 92WS, 91JS, 90ST, 90W&S). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at Bordeaux Index's tasting and at the château, the 2006 Calon Segur was current winemaker Vincent Millet's first vintage. In many ways, you can see it as one of the last of the "old style" Calon Segur wines with a higher percentage of Merlot than nowadays (the 2006 consists of 33% Merlot), while I aver that the tannins are not as fine as they are nowadays. The Merlot component is vividly expressed on the nose with ravishing ripe red cherries, kirsch and strawberry, just slightly smudged by the alcohol. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannin, quite sexy in style but it does not have the class of more recent vintages and it seems to have remained tough up on the finish. It will loosen up with time, so afford this another 6-8 years in bottle. (NM)" (05/2016)

1982 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1982 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac (100JS, 100RP, 98ST, 98WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This wine remains one of the legends of Bordeaux. It has thrown off the backward, youthful style that existed during its first 25 years of life, and over the last 4-5 years has developed such secondary nuances as cedar and spice box. The creme de cassis, underlying floral note, full-bodied power, extraordinary purity, multilayered texture, and finish of over a minute are a showcase for what this Chateau accomplished in 1982. The wine is still amazingly youthful, vibrant, and pure. It appears capable of remaining fruity and vibrant in 2082! Thank God it is beginning to budge, as I would like to drink most of my supply before I kick the bucket. This is a great, still youthful wine, and, on occasion, one does understand the hierarchy of Bordeaux chateaux when you see the complexity and brilliance of this first-growth. (RP)" (06/2009)

Bid on this magnum lot of 2009 Haut-Bailly, Pessac-Léognan (1.5L) (100RP, 97JS, 95WE, 94ST, 94WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "... The 2009, which has an opaque ruby/purple color, an extraordinary nose of high-quality unsmoked cigar tobacco, graphite, blackcurrants and spice, hits the palate with a medium to full-bodied, saturated and rich mouthfeel, but an elegant and ethereal quality that is difficult to articulate. It is rich, complex and tastes as if it were the vinous equivalent of a remarkable haute couture creation from the late Coco Chanel. Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2001 Domaine Dujac Clos de la Roche Grand Cru (94BH, 93VN, (89-91RP)). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "As is the case with this wine from 750 ml (see herein for that review), this beauty displays more elegance and finesse than usual with its pure aromas of earth, black and red fruit and spice that are nuanced by subtle notes of soy, coffee and hoisin. There is a really lovely mouth feel to the nicely voluminous, intense and mineral-laden middle weight flavors that deliver exceptionally fine length in an impeccably well-balanced finale. While certainly not at its apogee, this is one of those 2001s that is so harmonious that it could easily be enjoyed now though it clearly is still on the way up and thus should amply reward another 6 to 8 years of cellaring." Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Interestingly, the 2008 Griotte-Chambertin is less marked by the vintage than the Clos St. Jacques; rather here it is the signature of the vineyard that reigns supreme. Readers will find a wine of exquisite textural elegance and finesse. Silky tannins frame the fragrant, sweet fruit through to the generous, inviting finish. 1992 Petrus, Pomerol
Bid on this bottle of 1992 Petrus, Pomerol (90RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1992 Petrus is clearly one of the two candidates for the 'wine of the vintage.' The normal production of 4,500 cases was severely reduced to only 2,600 cases, resulting in an atypically concentrated, powerful, rich wine with a dark, saturated ruby/purple color, a tight but promising nose of sweet black-cherry fruit, vanillin, caramel, and herb-tinged mocha notes. Concentrated and powerful, with superb density of fruit and richness, as well as wonderful sweetness to its tannin, this is a brilliant effort for the vintage. (RP)" (12/1994)

Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2001 Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat Romanée-St-Vivant Grand Cru (93BH). Allen Meadows - Burghound: " Deep ruby. This is even more explosive than it was a year ago with seductive, very dark and expressive smoky black Vosne fruit that is laced through and through with anise, tea and seemingly endless variations of Oriental spice. The moderately structured flavors deliver a stunningly beautiful mix of spice, intensity and perfectly integrated structure. In short, this is a superb and very classy effort with terrific persistence. Bid on this bottle of 2010 Pontet-Canet, Pauillac (100JS, 100RP, 98WE, 97WS, 95ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "An absolutely amazing wine... It comes from one of the few biodynamic vineyards in Bordeaux, but you are likely to see many more, given the success that Tesseron seems to be having at all levels, both in his vineyards and in his fermentation/winemaking. An astounding, compelling wine with the classic Pauillac nose more often associated with its cross-street neighbor, Mouton-Rothschild, creme de cassis, there are also some violets and other assorted floral notes. The wine has off-the-charts massiveness and intensity but never comes across as heavy, overbearing or astringent. Despite all the size and weight, the superbly long finish is linear and tension-filled. There is reasonably good density to the delicious and solidly complex medium-bodied flavors that exhibit a trace of minerality on the attractively persistent and palate coating finish. A pretty and fully mature nose of really lovely complexity, especially for a villages level wine, dissolves into intense, round and utterly delicious medium-bodied flavors that offer exceptionally good Meursault character and an abundance of minerality on the long finish. This still vibrant effort continues to pack plenty of flavor authority and one that has arrived at its peak of maturity. I would suggest drinking this up over the next 5 to 7 years or so as there is no appreciable upside development potential remaining. In sum, this is a simply terrific wine for its level. Dark cherries, spices, graphite and mint are just some of the many nuances that burst from the glass in this superb, pedigreed Burgundy. The 2010 boasts incredible richness, depth and sheer power, all while capturing the ineffable sexiness of Vosne. Layers of fruit build towards a crescendo of incomparable elegance and class. Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A more elegant nose of relatively high-toned red berry fruit enjoys added breadth in the form of earth, sauvage and spice nuances. The supple, round and accessible middle weight flavors possess a lovely sense of energy on the moderately complex but relatively powerful finish where a touch of animale can be found." (01/2015)

2012 Gerard Raphet Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2012 Gerard Raphet Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes. The Raphet family has passed on its winemaking knowledge over four generations, and the inherited passion, along with beautifully gnarled 100-year-old vines, makes for delicate but intense wines that often fly under the radar. Handmade with indigenous yeasts and no fining or filtering--as it has been from the beginning--these wines are true testaments to old-school Burgundy.

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1999 Michel Noellat et Fils Echezeaux Grand Cru (92BH). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "An attractively spicy nose displays only mild secondary influence as the dark berry fruit is still fresh if no longer primary. There is good vibrancy to the middle weight flavors that possess reasonable if not excellent mid-palate concentration before terminating in a delicious, long and solidly complex finale. This has turned out better than I originally foresaw and while it's not a particularly dense effort, it certainly is pretty. Note that for my taste it is drinking well now and this is true even in the larger format bottling." (04/2015)

While the structure has largely been resolved there is still some firmness to the impressively persistent finish. For my taste this has arrived on the front edge of its prime drinkability though it should hold here for years to come." (06/2014)

Bid on this bottle of 2009 Frédéric Magnien Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru ((92-95ST), (91-94BH), 92RP). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: " Good full, deep red. Sexy, highly aromatic nose combines briary raspberry, crushed stone, clove, cumin, dried flowers and smoke. Wonderfully silky and seductive on the palate, with compelling inner-mouth perfume. But much less expressive on the back half and in need of substantial bottle aging. Still, this extremely promising Charmes is already wonderfully subtle wine." (01/2011)

2010 Pavie, St-Emilion
Bid on this bottle of 2010 Pavie, St-Emilion (100RP, 98JS, (94-97WS), 95ST, 94VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "What fun, excitement and joy it will be to compare the four perfect wines Perse has made in 2005, 2009, 2010 and, of course, the 2000, in 25 or so years. This wine is truly profound Bordeaux. Everything is in place - remarkable concentration and a beautiful nose of cedar and ripe blackcurrant and blackberry with some kirsch and spice box in the background. Lavishly rich, with slightly more structure and delineation than the more Rabelaisian 2009, this wine does show some serious tannins in the finish, and comes across as incredibly youthful. Of course, it's five years old, but it tastes more like a just-bottled barrel sample than a 2010. In any event, this wine is set for a long, long life and should be forgotten for at least another decade. Consume it over the following 75 or more years." (08/2016)

2010 Pape Clément, Pessac-Léognan
Bid on this bottle of 2010 Pape Clément, Pessac-Léognan (100RP, 96JS, 95WE, 95WS, 94ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I certainly underrated the 2010 Pape Clement from barrel, rating it only 93-95+. (Thank God I put a 'plus' there!) Having tasted it four times in Bordeaux, and rating it perfect three times and 99 the fourth time, this final blend of 51% Merlot, 47.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 1.5% Petit Verdot is perfection in a bottle. Tipping the scales at 14.5% natural alcohol, there are 8,000 cases of it. Its sublime elegance, the power, the medium to full-bodied texture, the silky tannins, the subtle notes of smoke, lead pencil shavings, black currants, charcoal, camphor, blueberry and cassis fruit are all remarkable. It is a rich, full-throttle wine, but the elegance and the great terroir of Pape Clement come through in abundance. It is slightly more developed and evolved than the 2005 was at a similar point in its evolution, but it certainly needs another 5-7 years to develop f

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This sensational, opaque blue/purple-colored wine from Smith Haut Lafitte has a gorgeous floral nose with notes of graphite, blueberries, blackberries, and cassis that jump from the glass of this inky, very dense, yet strikingly pure wine. Light on its feet despite its stunning concentration and multi-layered mouthfeel, this wine has fabulous intensity, richness and length. Quite impressive, and still incredibly youthful, this is a superstar of the vintage, and capable of lasting another 25-30 years. (RP)" (06/2015)

Almost a blend of the prior two wines with its delicate, fine yet powerful aromas of stones, white flowers and citrus notes followed by superbly detailed, intense and powerful flavors that seem to go on and on. This is reference standard stuff and Boudot said that it was his favorite premier cru in 2000 after the Combettes. In short, it’s a first class stunner that finishes extremely dry..' Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2007 Domaine de la Janasse "Chaupin" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (99RP, 98RR, 94VN, 94WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I’ve drunk over a case of the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvée Chaupin from my cellar, and this was easily one of the finest bottles (it was from magnum) I’ve ever had. Made from close to 100% Grenache and brought up in foudre, it’s a crazy good, monumental beauty that offers loads of ripe blackberries, black raspberries, crushed flowers and garrigue aromas and flavors. Concentrated, layered and unctuous, with a to-die-for texture, no hard edges and a huge finish, this beauty is still youthful and is just now starting to show hints of maturity. When it’s this good, I can’t recommend waiting, but I’ve no doubt this will continue to offer this level of quality for at least another decade. (JD)" (02/2017)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon and 37% Merlot, it displays an inky/blue/purple color as well as a big, sweet nose of creme de cassis, forest floor, licorice, lead pencil, cedar and subtle barrique smells. Viscous and full-bodied, it is the most concentrated and broadest example of this cuvee I have tasted in over three decades. It will be ready to drink in 5-7 years and should last for three decades or more. Consumers looking to maximize value should be checking out Duhart Milon, as this may be the single smartest purchase in this great and historic vintage! (RP)" (02/2012)

2010 Cantemerle, Haut-Médoc
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2010 Cantemerle, Haut-Médoc (94JS, 94RP, 92WE, 91WS, 90ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The wine needs a good 7-10 years of cellaring and should keep for 30 more years, but this is the finest Cantemerle I have encountered in my professional career of tasting young vintages (dating back 34 years now). Stunningly deep ruby/purple, with a beautiful nose of spring flowers intermixed with perfumed raspberry and blueberry notes, it exhibits a sort of cool-climate character. Broad, rich and intense on the palate, the wine has plenty of tannins, but they are sweet and well-integrated. Everything is delicately entwined into this beautiful, medium to full-bodied, dense purple wine, which shows stunning character and a prodigious potential for development. This is definitely a major sleeper of the vintage and even better than I thought from barrel. With its 2010, this classified growth located in the southern end of the Medoc may well have made a modern-day version

Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Here the cool and only moderately ripe nose is somewhat atypical for the vintage as it combines notes of raspberry, plum and sour cherry. The supple and delicious flavors are lacy to the point of being almost delicate yet there is focused power on the mouth coating finish. The tannins possess a dusty character and unlike the Combottes, there is excellent complexity and flat out stunning length delivered in a style that emphasizes finesse. Fans of power and weight will wish to look elsewhere but for those who enjoy elegance, this is a textbook example of what I call power without weight." (01/2011)

Of the 2009 Domaine de la Pousse d'Or Corton-Bressandes Grand Cru,Robert Parker's Wine Advocate writes: "The 2009 Corton-Les Bressandes is an implosive wine. It possesses massive structure and powerful tannins, but the best is many years away. The fruit is very nicely textured on the long, pointed finish. This shows superb purity, class and pedigree. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2039. This is a stunning set of wines from Patrick Landager. The vintage yielded a set of super-sized, big wines that may shock some readers for their sheer intensity. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Trois Sources comes from the estate's vineyards planted in sandy soils. About 10,000 bottles have been produced. One of the great wines of the vintage, this unbelievable Chateauneuf is still extremely young and primary. Its opaque purple color is followed by scents of ink, acacia flowers, blueberries, black raspberries and blackberries. While full-bodied, extremely concentrated and massive, the wine is totally harmonious with beautifully integrated acidity, tannin and alcohol (which is no doubt in excess of 16%). Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1998 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac (94W&S, 93VN, 92RP, 92ST, 91JS, 91WS). Vinous: "Very deep saturated ruby. Archetypical cabernet sauvignon-dominated nose offers fresh blackcurrant, lead pencil and flowers complicated by strong spice notes. Bright and juicy on entry, with very pure flavors of dark berries, underbrush and dried herbs, then slightly austere and linear in the middle palate. Finishes with a lingering saline nuance and very good length. A very refined and impeccably balanced Mouton, but I would have liked a little bit more concentration and opulence for an even higher score. This classic Mouton possesses relatively high acidity and a solid tannic structure; it offers early accessibility but should age effortlessly for another 15 or 20 years. (ID) (8/2011)

I appreciate the purity and floral nature of Mugneret-Gibourg’s Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Chaignots, which is well defined and seems to blossom on the glass. It feels natural and nicely focused, plenty of mulberry and raspberry fruit emerging as it opens. Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 2009 Domaine Dominique Mugneret Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru "Aux Boudots". A small winery, founded in 1979 and run by the cousin of Patrice Mugneret of Domaine Gerard Mugneret. From Wine Advocate: "Dominique Mugneret is the cousin of Patrice Mugneret of Domaine Gerard Mugneret. Its roots like in Domaine Denis Mugneret that was established in 1979, his son Dominique officially starting three years later after studies at viticultural college and military service and bottling a majority of production themselves only really began in 1985 after the cuverie had been built. Dominique took over completely in 1999, introducing biodynamic principles towards his vineyard husbandry, cultivating grass between rows to regulate vigor, fully de-stemming fruit, and only intermittently racking during elevage. This is a small winery located opposite the Clos des Reas vineyard in Vosne-Romanée, a fairly rudimentary winery that nevertheless creates commendable wines." (NM, 12/2013

It has always possessed considerable power as well as a muscular, concentrated style and hefty tannin. Beginning to shed its tannin, it reveals an intriguing dusty herb, black cherry, kirsch, and mineral nose, with subtle vanillin from new oak in the background. There are medium-bodied, concentrated flavors with some firm tannin, but by and large this is a very accessible wine. It remains youthful, with only a hint of amber at the edge of its deep ruby/purple color. This will undoubtedly be one of L'Arrosee's longest-lived wines since their 1961. (RP)" (01/1998)

Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 2005 Haut-Bailly, Pessac-Léognan (96RP, 95JS, 95WS, 94WE, 92ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Haut-Bailly, is dense purple with loads of graphite, earth, spice, blackberry and blueberry fruit, beautiful balance, medium to full body, and stunning purity, texture and length. Still incredibly young at age 10, this wine is set for 30 or more years of longevity. This is a great, great Haut-Bailly that will one day probably rival 2009 and 2010. 96+ points. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2010 Vosne-Romanee Les Malconsorts Christiane is made from a tiny part of the Malconsorts vineyard that sits within La Tache. The 2010 Christiane flows from the glass with a rich, exotic tapestry of dazzling fruit, black cherries, violets, licorice, spices and hard candy. White flowers add lift and sweet perfume on the breathtakingly beautiful finish. The integration of fruit and structure is virtually seamless. In other words, everything is in perfect balance. Readers who can find the Christiane should not hesitate. It is without question one of the wines of the vintage. (AG)" (02/2012)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The spectacular 2003 Leoville Poyferre exhibits a dense purple color with a touch of lightening at the edge as well as notes of creosote, barbecue smoke, jammy black currants, licorice and spice box. This intense, voluptuously textured, full-bodied St.-Julien possesses low acidity and ripe tannin. Still fresh and exuberant, it is just entering its plateau of full maturity where it should remain for 10-15+ years. (RP)" (08/2014)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2008 La Fleur-Petrus, Pomerol (95RP, 93WE, 92JS, 92WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A major sleeper of the vintage, the 2008 La Fleur Petrus (90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc) is a remarkably sexy, opulent wine that transcends the vintage character. Its dense plum/ruby/purple color is accompanied by notes of sweet black cherries, licorice, truffles and a hint of graphite. Full-bodied with silky tannin as well as undeniable appeal, richness, purity and a 40+ second finish, this is a sure-fire big buy in 2008. Drink it over the next 20+ years. (RP)" (05/2011)

Full-bodied and very sweet, with fantastic concentration of ripe and botrytized fruit, yet balanced and refined. Electric acidity. Lasts for minutes on the palate. This is absolutely mind-blowing. This is the greatest young Sauternes I have ever tasted. Best after 2010. (JS)" (09/2004)

Bid on this bottle of 1989 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac (96WS, 95RP, 95ST, 94JS). Wine Spectator: "Delivers so much blackberry, leather and dried fruits on the nose. Full-bodied, with ultrapolished tannins and a silky mouthfeel. The palate turns to leaves, cedar and dried berries on the finish, which goes on and on. This is still reserved for the vintage, suggesting a long life ahead. Just coming around now, but will improve many years ahead. I have always loved this Lynch. (JS, Web-2010)"

Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2013 Domaine J-F Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru "Fuées" (92RP, 91BH, 91VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuées has a broody incense and tarry-scented nose, perhaps one that is beginning to shut down, just a faint sea-spray scent in the distance. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin and a keen line of acidity, quite structured with a hint of dried blood on the finish. This is one of Mugnier's more enigmatic 2013s in the making and I like that. (NM)" (01/2016)

Bid on this 6-half-bottle lot of 2010 Suduiraut, Sauternes (375ml) (96RP, 95JS, (92-95ST), 95WE, 93WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Along with Chateau Rieussec, the Suduiraut 2010 is a candidate for best Sauternes of the vintage. It has a wonderful bouquet with an instantaneous sense of completeness and harmony, with layers of botrytized fruit intermingling with apricot blossom, peach skin and marmalade. This is powerful, but not in your face. There is no need to be. The palate is well-balanced with a viscous opening. There is plenty of botrytis here, good acidity and enormous weight on the finish. Perhaps it needs a little more tension, but otherwise this is a very impressive wine for the Sauternes vintage. (NM)" (04/2014)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1996 Domaine Comte de Vogüé Chambolle-Musigny (90RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The ’96 Chambolle Village is now at its peak although it should stay there for several years. It has a decadent raspberry and plum-scented bouquet with just a hint of Earl Grey, whilst the palate retains tensile tannins and has a firm, structured finish that should see it age gracefully over the next decade. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2002 Nuits-St.-Georges Les St.-Georges sports a nose of blackberries, bacon, and a myriad of spices. Hugely broad, spicy, and plush, this is a wine of power, nobility, and complexity. Innumerable red and black fruits are intermingled with roasting spices in its dense, suave core. Bid on this bottle of 2010 Smith-Haut-Lafitte Rouge, Pessac-Léognan (98RP, 96WE, 96WS, 95JS, 94ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is an extraordinary performance once again from the Cathiard family, the proprietors of Smith-Haut-Lafitte. They think the 2010 is even better than the 2009. (I disagree, but only slightly.) This wine has laser-like definition in its an remarkable nose of a subtle charcoal fire interwoven with spring flowers, creme de cassis, blueberry liqueur and spicy wood. Full-bodied, stunningly concentrated, long, rich and moderately tannic, this wine is set for an exceptionally long life of 30-40 years but can be drunk in 5-7. (RP)" (02/2013)

Allen Meadows - Burghound: "While perfumed and strikingly complex, this pretty array of red pinot fruit and earth aromas is much more reserved compared to the nose of the Combottes. The pure and refined middle weight flavors are so fine that they border on the delicate and I especially appreciate the silky texture on the firm, lingering and mouth coating finish. This is not overly complex at present but there is sufficient mid-palate concentration that my range offers the benefit of the doubt that it will develop much more in time. Drink: 2022+" (01/2012)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2010 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Aux Boudots has a thickly layered black fruit on the nose: mulberry and raspberry, perhaps just a touch of white flowers. The palate is sweet and very tannic on the entry with plenty of depth, but it lacks the finesse of the 2012 from barrel. Sweet raspberries, tobacco, freshly cut flowers, mint and cinnamon meld together gracefully in the glass. The Ursules is distinguished from the other Beaunes by its silky tannins and fabulous length. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2009 Domaine Marius Delarche Corton-Renardes Grand Cru Réserve Vieilles Vignes. Hidden away in this peaceful valley in the shadow of the noble hill of Corton was certainly the Côte de Beaune’s best-kept secret—gorgeous wines made by an honest winemaker for prices that reminded of decades past." Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2005 Domaine Gourt de Mautens (Jérôme Bressy) Rasteau (92RP, 92RR). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Rasteau is tannic, backward, and just massive. The wine needs 6-7 years of cellaring, and should age for 15-20 years as well. It won’t have as much accessibility as the 2006 will in 4-5 years, but it is loaded with similar character, chocolate, black raspberries, and kirsch, intermixed with dusty, loamy soil notes, pepper, and the telltale chocolate that comes from the old vine Grenache that bakes in the sun in this high elevation appellation. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2014 Chablis 1Er Cru Vaillons has come on nicely since I tasted it from barrel last year. The bouquet has retained, enhanced those yellow flower scents, perhaps its flintiness more conspicuous now that the wine is in bottle. The palate is fresh and crisp, not as shrill as I feared it might be, but certainly taut and linear. It has a saline spiciness, like the tang of fresh cockles, furnishing the finish. Don't let the family's modest holdings (just 20 acres in and around the village) fool you—this estate offers an exciting cross-section of terroir-driven village and premier cru wines that you'll seldom find in one single domaine. The Gavignet estate spans four generations, yet it is Philippe who has raised the quality of red Burgundy at the winery to a whole new level. Taking over from his father Michel in 1992, Philippe has expanded the domaine to cover a range of terroirs in Nuits, with vineyards that are almost exclusively low-yielding older vines that are cared for naturally and harvested by hand.

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2010 Gerard Raphet Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Combottes" Cuvee Unique (91BH). 2005 Jean Faure, St-Emilion
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2005 Jean Faure, St-Emilion (91ST). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good ruby-red. Reticent but nuanced nose hints at currant, game, iron and coffee. A fruit bomb in the mouth, with fat, sweet flavors of redcurrant, raspberry, tobacco and smoked meat. As full-blown and ripe as this is on first blush, there's plenty of ripe tannins and firm acids underneath. In fact, this quickly shut down in the glass, suggesting that it will require at least six or seven years of aging. The thickest of these three vintages, but the young 2007 is more suave. From one of the few bio-dynamically farmed vineyards in St.-Emilion, this 2009 exhibits a dense ruby/purple color as well as a big, crisp, precise nose of forest floor, black and red fruits, crushed rocks, and earth. Dense, muscular, and masculine, this rich, full-bodied, deep, impressively endowed effort will benefit from 5-7 years of cellaring, and should drink well for 25+. (RP)" (04/2010)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2009 Gerard Raphet Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Lavaux St-Jacques" Cuvée Unique (91BH). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "An exceptionally fresh and pretty red pinot fruit nose also reflects nuances of stone, plum and earth hints. There is really lovely detail and purity to the delicious, intense and well-balanced middle weight flavors that are very Lavaut in character, all wrapped in a mouch coating and mineral-inflected finish. As is typically the case with the Raphet wines, this is not particularly powerful or concentrated but the focus is impressive in the context of the vintage and for those who enjoy refined and almost delicate burgundies, this would certainly qualify. Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "(a blend of 54% cabernet franc, 40% merlot and 6% malbec, with a crop level, according to Decelle, of 34 hectoliters per hectare; 60% new oak) Bright ruby. C abernet franc-dominated nose offers precise aromas of red cherry, blackcurrant, violet and white pepper, plus a hint of cocoa. Then densely packed and a bit tight in the middle, featuring lively if not particularly pliant red and black fruit flavors and a nice dusting of minerals. Finishes long and slightly austere, with mounting dusty-but-ripe tannins and a lingering strawberry note. This rather uncompromising wine possesses sneaky concentration but is not the type that shows well during the primeur tastings; still, it should develop well during its second year of elevage and in bottle. 1973 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1973 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac. Chris Kissack's TheWineDoctor.com: "Phillippe Rothschild called it '...the monstrous injustice' of Mouton's second growth status. For years the labels stated simply 'Premier ne puis, second ne daigne, Mouton suis,' or 'First I cannot be, second I do not deign to be, I am Mouton'. It was clear from the great vintages produced in the 1860s and 1870s that the 1855 classification was already outdated, and that change was long overdue. But no such review of this classification will ever take place, and it was only thanks to the tireless campaigning of Philippe that Jacques Chirac, then Minister of Agriculture, passed a decree conferring the status of first growth upon Mouton-Rothschild in 1973. At last the wrong had been righted, and from then on Mouton's labels bore a new inscription, 'Premier je suis, second je fus. Mouton ne change,' or 'First I am, second I was. Mouton does not change'."

The 2010 Christiane flows from the glass with a rich, exotic tapestry of dazzling fruit, black cherries, violets, licorice, spices and hard candy. It will be interesting to see how the 2009 fares against the 2010 after twenty years of aging, but my money is on the 2009. A blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot that achieved 13.5% natural alcohol, this inky purple, unctuous wine possesses classic aromas of graphite, creme de cassis, blueberries, violets, licorice and Christmas fruitcake. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2002 Bollinger "La Grande Année" Brut Champagne (98W&S, 97JS, 94RP, 94VN, 94WS). Wine & Spirits: "There is Champagne, and then there is 2002 Bollinger. This wine makes me dizzy, stammering in cross-eyed bliss. Taking a step back, the sustained chord of flavor comes into focus, revealing a limestone honey: scents of acacia, marzipan, apricot and golden citrus. Jamal Rayyis, one of our tasters with the broadest flavor library in his head, described the scent as loomi (dried lime) and dried apricot, as if walking into a Middle Eastern market. Flavor details aside, the wine’s richness softens the structural grandeur of the vintage, which is buoyed in a mineral bath of power. This will reward another ten or 20 years of age, and the bottles that remain will likely only feed the wine’s legend. " (12/2011)

A small winery, founded in 1979 and run by the cousin of Patrice Mugneret of Domaine Gerard Mugneret. This is a small winery located opposite the Clos des Reas vineyard in Vosne-Romanée, a fairly rudimentary winery that nevertheless creates commendable wines." (NM, 12/2013)

Of the 2014 Nicolas Joly "Les Vieux Clos" Savennières,Robert Parker's Wine Advocate writes: "Joly's golden-yellow 2014 Savennières Les Vieux Clos is pure and elegant on the herbal and flinty nose, where spicy lemon/lemon grass and ripe, concentrated fruit aromas are displayed. Very well defined! On the palate, the 14.5% alcohol comes along in perfect balance: very elegant and finesse-full. since the powerful body is lifted by a piquant acidity, a lovely transparency and finesse, and finally escorted by a dense and lush fruit texture. The finish is very precise, fresh and aromatic, but also full of elegance, salt and stimulation. (RP)" (10/2016)

His estate is in the northern part of St Joseph and he pulls mostly from vineyards in Côte Rôtie and around the villages of Chavanay and Malleval. Despite using a relatively high percentage of oak (most cuvées see 20-50% new barrels), there’s always an Old World feel to these wines."

The aromas and flavors are distinctly nuanced and well-articulated. Mineral notes add freshness to this silky, chiseled Pommard. This is the first vintage where Boillot’s Rugiens is equal parts Rugiens-Hauts and Bas. The parcel in Rugiens-Bas is a new acquisition. Previous vintages were made just from Rugiens-Hauts. 1986 Mouton Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1986 Mouton Rothschild, Pauillac (100JS, 100RP, 99VN, 99WS, 98ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1986 Mouton-Rothschild is a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot that was picked from 2 October until 16 October. Winemaker Philippe Dhalluin, who was not working at the property back then, told me that the pH was fairly low at 3.54 when it is usually around 3.75, due to the natural tartaric acid in the vines. It has a powerful and intense bouquet as always: exemplary graphite and cedar scents, a touch of black pepper and incense. It seems to unfurl in the glass, like a motor revving its engine. The palate is beautifully balanced with its trademark firm tannic structure, a Mouton-Rothschild with backbone and masculinity. Layers of black fruit intermingling with mint and graphite, a hint of licorice emanating from the Merlot, gently fanning out and my God, it is incredibly long. It is not like the 1985 Mouton-Rothschil

Supersweet aromas of raspberry, currant, graphite and sweet oak, plus an exotic suggestion of citrus fruit. Silky and sweet, if rather unforthcoming in the middle palate; offers great concentration and a near perfect sugar/acid balance. Firm tannins are covered by fruit. Great whiplash of a finish. A stunner that has been stuck at at this sublime point for a while, with no signs of moving any time soon. Bid on this bottle of 1999 Domaine Armand Rousseau Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru (97BH, (92-95RP), 94ST). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "The '99 Bèze just continues to get better and better with every passing year. A flat out gorgeously complex nose is comprised by spice, earth, minerality and still fresh red and black pinot fruit aromas. There is excellent richness to the intense and beautifully well-delineated medium-bodied flavors that are blessed with plenty of mouth coating dry extract that confers a seductive texture onto the strikingly persistent finish. Like the '99 Chambertin, while this could be drunk now I would strongly advise holding it for at least another 5 years and 10 would probably be better. Tasted many times and this only seems to go from strength to strength. In a word, exquisite. Tasted twice in 2016 with multiple and consistent notes since release. Try from 2014+." (06/2016)

It is a towering, statuesque wine that completely saturates the palate in all directions, seemingly at the same time. The 2010 stands out for its beguiling, totally exquisite aromatics. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Mugnier’s wines of the vintage, his 2007 Musigny exudes ripe, vanilla- and star anise-tinged black raspberry and cassis, underlain by clean, marrow-like meatiness. Already satiny in texture, yet buoyant, this finishes with dark-fruited, forest floor-inflected, palate-staining persistence yet a soothing, enveloping personality that is anything but palate-straining. Even though this is an unusually approachable example of its kind, few Burgundian Pinots of its vintage, I suspect, will justify the 15 or more years of glory that I would anticipate from this Musigny. 2013 Domaine Coche Dury Corton Grand Cru
Bid on this bottle of 2013 Domaine Coche Dury Corton Grand Cru (93BH). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A more deeply pitched nose is composed by notes of game, pungent earth, red and dark currant and an interesting smoky nuance. While this is certainly a bigger and more obviously powerful wine than the Volnay "1er" it remains relatively refined thanks in large part to the fine-grained tannins, all wrapped in an overtly stony and beautifully long finish. While this is indisputably a wine of focused power and taut muscularity along with a touch of youthful austerity, it isn't rustic or hard. I consider this to be a considerable achievement in a vintage like 2013 where much of the Hill of Corton was so badly hammered by hail. In sum, if you can find a bottle, don't hesitate!" (04/2016)

2000 Margaux, Margaux
Bid on this bottle of 2000 Margaux, Margaux (100JS, 100RP, 98ST, 98WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Absolutely compelling in two tastings of this vintage, the 2000 Margaux is composed of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot. The extraordinary seductiveness, complex aromatics, and purity it exhibits lead me to believe it has reached its window of full maturity. Medium-bodied, with layers of concentration, stunning blue, red, and black fruits intermixed with spring flowers, a subtle dosage of new oak, and a distinctive personality that is elegant while at the same time powerful and substantial, this is a multi-dimensional wine that was extremely approachable and drinkable in both tastings I had of it. The color remains a healthy, even opaque bluish/purple, but there is no reason to hesitate to drink it. It should evolve for another 30-40 years, so there is no hurry either. (RP)" (06/2010)

Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2000 Calon-Ségur, St-Estèphe (OWC - 94RP, 93WE, 90ST) in original wood. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted from an ex-château bottle at BI Wine & Spirits Calon-Segur dinner in London. The 2000 Calon Segur is one of those wines that reminds you how great the millennial vintage could be. Now at fifteen years old, it has a brilliant, vivacious red berry nose infused with ash and cigar box aromas. The detail here is a beguiling and it just "sings" Saint Estèphe. The palate is medium-bodied with dense, firm tannin that provide a rigid backbone, but it is swathed in copious tobacco-drenched black fruit and a superb line of acidity. It finishes with a twist of bitter cherry on the finish that completes what is a deeply impressive Calon-Ségur; it might just outclass the 2005. (NM)" (10/2016)
