French Wine

When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its regions, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and occasionally as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a 100 lives. To understand and appreciate French wine, you only need to begin tasting them. Check out some of the top picks that our buyers have tracked down - several of these wines are imported directly from France.

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2010 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac (98JS, 96RP, 96WE, 96WS, 92ST). James Suckling: "A wine with great beauty and finesse. Such elegance and ethereal quality for this estate. Full body, with ultra-fine tannins and a juicy delicious finish. Long and beautiful. This is the best Lynch in a long, long time. I love the precision here. Try in 2018. " (11/2013)

Sappy, pure aromas of black fruits and sexy oak. Lush and spherical in the mouth, with wonderful thickness and depth of texture. Blackberry, cassis and licorice flavors are framed by sound acidity. Finishes with superb length and substantial but fine tannins. Structured for a long life in bottle." (03/2000)

1995 Haut-Brion, Pessac Léognan
Bid on this bottle of 1995 Haut-Brion, Pessac Léognan (96RP, 95WS, 93ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "It is fun to go back and forth between the 1995 and 1996, two superb vintages for Haut-Brion. The 1995 seems to have sweeter tannin and a bit more fat and seamlessness when compared to the more structured and muscular 1996. Certainly 1995 was a vintage that the brilliant administrator Jean Delmas handled flawlessly. The result is a deep ruby/purple-colored wine with a tight but promising nose of burning wood embers intermixed with vanilla, spice box, earth, mineral, sweet cherry, black currant, plum-like fruit, medium to full body, a high level of ripe but sweet tannin, and a finish that goes on for a good 40-45 seconds. 2002 Domaine Sylvain Cathiard Romanée St-Vivant Grand Cru
Bid on this bottle of 2002 Domaine Sylvain Cathiard Romanée St-Vivant Grand Cru (94BH, 91WS). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Everything that this displayed from barrel has not only been retained but amplified since I last tried it. An expressive and utterly seductive black pinot fruit nose that is both broad and wonderfully classy leads to flavors that are velvety, silky and lacy while offering wonderful depth and simply superb length. To be sure, this is not a dense wine and certainly no bruiser but the purity of expression is astonishing and the finish goes on and on. At 6 years of age, this is just beginning to open up and while there is still plenty of upside development to be had, there is already enough here to make it awfully attractive. In sum, this is one of the best wines of the vintage and while it is rare and expensive, don't hesitate if you find it." (01/2008)

1998 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1998 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac (94W&S, 93ST, 91JS, 91WS). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Very deep saturated ruby. Archetypical Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated nose offers fresh blackcurrant, lead pencil and flowers complicated by strong spice notes. Bright and juicy on entry, with very pure flavors of dark berries, underbrush and dried herbs, then slightly austere and linear in the middle palate. Finishes with a lingering saline nuance and very good length. A very refined and impeccably balanced Mouton, but I would have liked a little bit more concentration and opulence for an even higher score. This classic Mouton possesses relatively high acidity and a solid tannic structure; it offers early accessibility but should age effortlessly for another 15 or 20 years. 93+ (ID)" (8/2011)

Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2005 Tardieu Laurent "Cuvée Speciale" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (96WS, (92-93RP), 92ST). Wine Spectator: "Stunning, with a terrific range of fig sauce, blackberry confiture, blueberry and linzer torte flavors layered with spice, mesquite, fruit cake and sweet earth notes. The long finish is riveted by minerality. So lush and accessible that this may be burning the candle at both ends, but it does so beautifully. Drink now through 2023. (JM)" (04/2008)

Allen Meadows - Burghound: "The most complete wine here with a spicy, earthy, gamy and strikingly elegant if presently reserved nose of musky black cherry fruit aromas that introduce rich, sweet and mouth coating flavors that explode on the strikingly long finish. This is a classy thoroughbred of a wine with superb complexity, impeccable balance and huge length, all delivered with both grace and power. 2013 Domaine Pichat "Le Champon" Côte-Rôtie
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2013 Domaine Pichat "Le Champon" Côte-Rôtie (90RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The inky purple-colored 2013 Côte Rôtie Champon's (aged in 30% new French oak) offers classic 2013 characteristics in its fresh, crisp notes of graphite, ground pepper, violets and underbrush. Medium-bodied, pretty, focused and with fine tannin, it lacks some back-end oomph, but opens up nicely with air, has solid purity of fruit, and plenty of elegance and character. Drink it anytime over the coming decade. (JD)" (12/2015)

2003 Domaine Denis Bachelet Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2003 Domaine Denis Bachelet Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes (92ST). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep ruby-red. Expressive aromas of blackberry liqueur, bitter chocolate and coffee; more open than the Corbeaux today. Then superripe in the mouth but a bit less forthcoming, with explosive, surprisingly primary flavors of blackberry and dark chocolate. Boasts a huge middle, especially for a Bachelet wine, but also more finesse than the Corbeaux. This reminded me a bit of a top pinot from the Sonoma Coast. Spreads out to coat the entire palate and mounts slowly and inexorably on the back. A very deep, black fruit-dominated Charmes that's quite fresh for the year. (ST)" (03/2006)

Sweet aromas of candied griotte cherry, kirsch, and stone. Sweet, sappy and gripping, with excellent structure and strong mineral character contributing to the impression of inner-mouth energy. Vibrant red fruit flavors are lifted by herbal, peppery and floral nuances. Finishes with very firm tannins that call for five or six years of additional bottle aging. 92+ Points" (03/2004)

Lush, medium-bodied, and velvety-textured, this plump, jammy wine reveals superb depth of fruit. 2003 Gérard Raphet Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2003 Gérard Raphet Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru (96RP, 92ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Fashioned from a parcel located in the heart of its grand cru (mostly from 25-year old vines though Raphet asserts that 'there are still some very old ones'), the 2003 Charmes-Chambertin Cuvee Unique explodes with red fruit aromas. Sappy, bursting with red cherries, this is a sensual wine made for hedonists. Medium to full-bodied, deep, and concentrated, it has serious depth of fruit, loads of smile-inducing spices and an exceptionally long, supple finish filled with superbly ripened tannin. Drink it over the next 11-14 years (incidentally, I served the 1996 at this year’s International Pinot Noir Celebration’s salmon bake in Oregon and it was terrific, wowing all who drank it.) This is quintessential Champans and a first rate example of the vineyard. Note however that it remains very young and will still need the better part of a decade to reach full maturity." (04/2010)

Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2002 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru "Les Clos" (95ST, 94BH, 94RP). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Very pale, green-tinged color. Reticent, somewhat reduced, soil-driven aromas of crushed stone, petrol and lime blossom. Extremely primary today, but already hinting at great incipient complexity, with notes of talc, citrus skin, white flowers and white pepper. Dense and fat with sheer extract; a real mouthful of liquid minerals. Superconcentrated, seamless and penetrating. 95+ (ST)" (07/2004)

2001 Mommessin Clos de Tart Grand Cru
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2001 Mommessin Clos de Tart Grand Cru (94RP, 93ST, 91BH). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2001 Clos de Tart is aging beautifully and is maturing into one of Sylvain Pitiot’s finest wines. Replicating its performance in 2010, it has a very expressive bouquet of vivacious red berry fruit: wild strawberry and raspberry, laced with minerals and dried rose petals. The palate is very well-balanced and full of succulent brambly red fruit. Perhaps it is moving into its secondary phase less slowly than I anticipated, with nuanced undergrowth notes developing toward the finish, which remains very fruit-driven and tense. There is a sense of style and class to this Clos de Tart, a grand cru bound to age with those same attributes over the following decade and beyond. Drink now-2024+. (NM)" (04/2014)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Vogue's 1997 Musigny is medium to dark ruby-colored, and exhibits a breathtaking nose of blueberries, licorice, jammy blackberries, violets, Asian spices, and stones. This magnificent wine is medium to full-bodied, sublimely refined, and detailed. It is a great Musigny in a light and lace-like style. Red currants and cherries vie for the taster's attention with spices and fresh clay in its luxurious, yet well-defined, personality. To top things off, this awesome wine's immensely long finish reveals loads of supple tannins, which will ensure the necessary backbone for cellaring." (10/1999)

White peach, pear and grapefruit aromas lifted by a floral topnote. Supple, pliant and lush, but braced by a firm acid spine. Lovely silky, open-knit wine with a distinctly high pitch to its white peach and floral flavors. Plenty of sucrosite here, but nicely buffered by harmonious acidity. Finishes with good dusty persistence. It has copious sweet blackberry and cassis fruit, violet and serious granite-like minerality, superb mid-palate depth and a focused, structured finish. Allen Meadows - Burghound: "(from 60+ year old vines and the vineyard is a whopping 4 ha monopole within Perrières) This is sufficiently reduced that it presently masks the fruit and if you're tempted to try a bottle in its youth I would strongly advise decanting it first. Otherwise there is outstanding density to the focused and powerful middle weight plus flavors that stain the palate with dry extract that also helps to buffer the intensely mineral-driven finale that just goes on for minutes. There is outstanding intensity here and an exceptionally long and lingering finish but what sets this apart is the superb overall balance. 2013 Meo-Camuzet Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru "Les Boudots"
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2013 Meo-Camuzet Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru "Les Boudots" ((92-94BH), 92VN, (88-90RP)). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A markedly spicy nose features notes of earth, plum, cassis and soft floral nuances. There is excellent concentration to the powerful and intense middle weight flavors that also possess a velvety mouth feel before culminating in a balanced, dusty and hugely long finish. The supporting tannins are well-integrated and while this should amply reward longer-term cellaring it should also be approachable after only 7 to 8 years. In a word, terrific." (01/2015)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2012 Joseph Drouhin Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru ((92-95BH), (93-95RP), (91-93ST)). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2012 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, which comes from lieu-dit “Les Languettes” was picked on September 19 and comes from their own vines, as it has for the last three vintages. Fortunately, there was no hail but the crop was still reduced by 50%, equating to three barrels in total. It already has an attractive nose, albeit one that is tightly coiled at present, coveting its apricot and beeswax aromas, keeping them back for later. The palate is spicy on the entry with a fine line of acidity. There is lovely weight here, with quite a precocious, yet still tightly wound finish that suggests it deserves five to six years to really come around. Excellent. (NM)" (12/2013)

1993 Domaine Georges Roumier Chambolle-Musigny
Bid on this bottle of 1993 Domaine Georges Roumier Chambolle-Musigny. Praise for the domaine from Clive Coates, MW: "For Chambolles with a difference, wines which are substantial, even sturdy, as well as velvety and elegant, the best source is the Roumier domaine: to be precise, because there are two others in the village, the Domaine Georges Roumier. This is one of the longest-established estate bottling domaines in the Côte D'Or. And one of the very best of all ... What does Christophe Roumier have to say about Chambolle and his wines? 'Yes. Chambolle is the most elegant wine of the Côte. There is nothing original about that statement. But for me the wines are also the most mineral. There is a purity, a fruit, an elegance and a distinction which come in large part from the extra amount of limestone in our soil, and perhaps the marginally higher altitude. I try to make my wines express this.' In sum, this is one of Burgundy's greatest domaines and Christophe Roumier is one of its most

1982 Talbot, St-Julien
Bid on this bottle of 1982 Talbot, St-Julien (95RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Along with the 1986, the 1982 is one of the greatest Talbots ever made. Far more evolved than its stablemate, Gruaud Larose, it exhibits a dense garnet color to the rim along with a huge, sweet, exotic nose of charcoal, beef blood, licorice, herbs, and black fruits. A hint of figs suggests borderline overripeness, but the wine remains fleshy and full-bodied with sweet tannin and an expansive, heady mouthfeel. (RP)" (06/2009)

Medium to full-boded, it coats the palate with oily waves of liquefied chalk, salt, minerals, and spice. This thick, immensely rich, satin-textured effort has massive depth, purity, and length. Bid on this bottle of 2006 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Bougros "Côte de Bouguerots" ((94-95RP), 95WE, 94ST, 93BH). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "From this cru’s steep, riverside slopes, the Fevre 2006 Chablis Bougros Cote de Bouguerots reveals its oak in lanolin, toasted almond, and spice aromas, along with notes of chalk dust, sweet lime, and heady, lily-like floral perfume. With enveloping richness, luscious juiciness, and flattering creaminess, yet underlain by a vivid sense of crushed stone, this saturates the palate so completely and intensely and with such a palpable sense of extract, that the finishing stain seems almost severe. This remarkably concentrated and polished wine should be worth following for 15 or more years. The 2005, too, is superb. (DS)" (10/2008)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2012 Vincent Dancer Meursault 1er Cru "Les Perrieres" (94ST, 92BH, 92RP). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: " (just 22 hectoliters per hectare were produced, according to Dancer): Compelling sweetness and lift to the aromas of lemon, orange, peach and crushed stone, plus a whiff of hazelnut. Boasts outstanding tactile concentration and suavity, with fine-grained flavors of orange zest, pineapple and minerals carrying through on the building whiplash of a finish. Just a hint of exotic fruits to indicate the vintage. "The year was saved by lousy July and August weather, which had the effect of extending the ripening period," noted Dancer. Bid on this bottle of 1999 Ducru-Beaucaillou, St-Julien (92RP, 91ST, 91WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Served at the Ducru offline in London, the ’99 is a Saint Julien that over-achieves in this mediocre growing season. Although it is slightly muffled on the nose at first, its opens up nicely with red-berried fruit, sandalwood, leather, cedar and a touch of spice. Good vigour and delineation. The palate is medium-bodied and very well balanced, gentle grip, almost Burgundian in texture thanks to its lovely, fleshy finish although that does not detract from its structure. This is a lovely, caressing ’99 in context of the vintage, one for medium-term drinking. Drink now-2018. Tasted September 2009. (NM)" (07/2010)

This isn't quite as precise as the Clos de la Roche but it's a seriously seductive wine and because of the sappiness, this could be enjoyed young or held for 6 to 8 years first." (01/2006)

The wine has a dark ruby/purple color just beginning to lighten at the edge. Notes of charcoal, acacia flowers, black raspberries, and blue fruits are followed by a medium to full-bodied wine that builds incrementally on the palate. 2005 Chateau de la Tour Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes
Bid on this bottle of 2005 Chateau de la Tour Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes (97BH, 95ST). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Out of all of the less than 20 year old wines in the tasting, the 2005 possesses the most aromatic complexity with simply knockout scents of still relatively primary red and dark berry fruit, spice, floral, humus, game and smoked tea. There is strikingly good concentration yet absolutely no sense of heaviness to the seductively textured and velvety broad-shouldered flavors that coat the mouth with abundant reserves of dry extract that also buffer the still very firm tannic spine. In addition to the obvious assets of complexity and concentration, what really impresses me about this exceptionally powerful wine is the impeccable balance and harmony as nary a hair is out of place. Note however that this is going to be one very, very long-lived effort and I wouldn't touch a bottle for at least another 10 to 12 years. In a word, stunning." (01/2014)

Its dense purple color is followed by an extraordinary perfume of charcoal, espresso roast, blackberries, blueberries, and a hint of wood. In spite of its thick texture, terrific acidity, high tannins, and enormous intensity as well as richness, it is surprisingly approachable, but given how slowly the 1989 and 1990 have aged, I would recommend cellaring it for 8-10 years. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2002 Domaine Sylvain Cathiard Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru "Les Malconsorts" (95RP, 92BH, 91WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2002 Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Malconsorts is beginning to drink extremely well. It has a lucid garnet core that is still quite youthful given that it now has a little mileage in bottle. The bouquet is exquisite. There is nothing shy and retiring here, with open and generous raspberry, orange sorbet and hints of gingerbread bursting forth but remaining tightly controlled and focused. The palate is ripe on the entry with firm but fine tannins. This is still a little masculine with a strong saline tang at first, gradually mutating into touches of star anis and cooked meat. It retains superb structure, and is a Les Malconsorts built for the long haul. Wonderful! Drink 2018-2030. Tasted June 2014. (NM)" (08/2014)

1999 Domaine Robert Groffier Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1999 Domaine Robert Groffier Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru (95ST, 93RP, 91BH). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Medium ruby. Knockout grand cru aromas of macerated berries, licorice, jasmine, animal fur, tar and exotic baking spices; a great example of Bonnes-Mares, showing both the floral and animal aspects of the cru. Fills the mouth with sappy sucrosity, lifted by a strong floral element. A wine of great energy, finishing with firm but sweet tannins. Makes a strong argument that great grand cru Burgundy can be made at a yield of 42 hectoliters per hectare." (04/2002)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1999 Domaine Joseph Roty Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru "Très Vieilles Vignes" ((95-97RP), 94BH, 94ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Produced from extremely old vines, as its name suggests (65% of this parcel dates back to 1881), the 1999 Charmes-Chambertin Tres Vieilles Vignes is dark ruby-colored. Bacon, jammy black cherries, and candied blackberries can be found in its aromatics. This huge, medium to full-bodied wine is extraordinarily concentrated, powerful, and chewy-textured. Its black fruit, licorice, asphalt, and cherry flavors are extremely expressive and last throughout its unbelievably long, thick, and sweet finish." (08/2001)

Silky, sweet and very intensely flavored, with compelling inner-mouth perfume of red fruits, minerals, smoke and dried flowers. It has a gorgeous waxy, honeysuckle bouquet with apricot blossom and fig jam aromas. It is exotic compared to the Coche-Dury style, but you won't complain. The palate is very intense with great concentration, superb acidity and layers of walnut-tinged citrus fruit that fan out wonderfully on the finish. Bid on this bottle of 2000 Domaine du Pégaü "Cuvée da Capo" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (100RP, 97WS, (94-95ST)). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee da Capo is a monument to old vine Grenache as well as traditionally made Chateauneuf du Pape. Boasting a natural alcohol of 16%, this wine, which was bottled in spring, 2003 because its fermentation was extremely slow, has virtually everything you could ever want in a profound Chateauneuf du Pape. The color is inky/ruby/purple to the rim. The extraordinary nose reveals aromas of kirsch liqueur, new saddle leather, animal fur, Provencal herbs, spice box, licorice, and a salty sea breeze character. On the palate, the wine is enormous, with an unctuosity, thickness, and purity that must be tasted to be believed. Over 95% of this offering is old vine Grenache, and the rest a field blend of ancient vines. Representing the essence of Chateauneuf du Pape, it possesses so much concentration that it is easy to pose the quest

One of the stars of this extreme vintage, it offers sensational levels of fruit and decadence, perfumed, intense aromatics, beautiful freshness and a to-die-for texture and finish. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2010 Pontet-Canet, Pauillac (100JS, 100RP, 98WE, 97WS, 95ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "An absolutely amazing wine...It comes from one of the few biodynamic vineyards in Bordeaux, but you are likely to see many more, given the success that Tesseron seems to be having at all levels, both in his vineyards and in his fermentation/winemaking. An astounding, compelling wine with the classic Pauillac nose more often associated with its cross-street neighbor, Mouton-Rothschild, creme de cassis, there are also some violets and other assorted floral notes. The wine has off-the-charts massiveness and intensity but never comes across as heavy, overbearing or astringent. Made in a more floral, supple, Margaux-like style, the deep ruby/purple-hued 2004 Leoville Poyferre exhibits sweet, broad flavors, and plenty of tannin lurking beneath the surface. However, the abundant cherry, black currant, licorice, and smoke notes obscure the tannic clout. This rich, powerful, broad beauty should be drinkable in 2-3 years, and last for two decades. Out of the entire tasting, it remained my favorite. Giving up gorgeous blackberry, currants, garrigue, pepper and beef blood, it hits the palate with a massive, full-bodied texture that carries layers of sweet fruit, awesome concentration and blockbuster length. Tasting like the essence of both this estate and the terroir, it’s an incredible wine that I’m happy to taste/drink anytime. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "From under the Clos de Tart and the tiny Morey sliver of Bonnes Mares, a 2005 Morey-St.-Denis Les Ruchots (aged in 40% new wood and recently assembled) had already been racked twice when I tasted, due to previous reduction. A good shaking was once again in order, at which point candied maraschino cherry and cinnamon candy aromas and flavors emerge. Intensely sweet red and black cherry accompanied by brown spices and hints of wood on a finely-tannic palate would not seem at all out of place in the New World. Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A completely different aromatic profile as this is distinctly red fruit in character compared to the black fruits of the Vosne crus. Denser still with excellent volume and this is tight, structured and very long with a masculine though by no means hard character. A serious wine that finishes with notes of damp earth." Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Though they are all outstanding, the star among Domaine William Fevre’s premier crus is the exceptional 2004 Chablis Fourchaume Vignoble de Vaulorent. Its profound aromatics reveal notes of apples dusted with minerals and chalk. Broad, ample, rich, and suave, this wine also boasts superb precision, freshness, and focus. Jam-packed with stone flavors amid hints of ripe pears, this effort’s flavor profile is also stupendously long. (PR)" (06/2006)

1986 Haut-Brion, Pessac-Léognan
Bid on this bottle of 1986 Haut-Brion, Pessac-Léognan (94RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The wine is still youthful, quite pure, medium to full-bodied, but somewhat elevated, austere tannins in the finish at age 16 are starting to make me think they will never become fully integrated. As always, making a judgment call on a wine destined to have a half-century of life is sometimes difficult, given the varying stages it goes through, but I wonder if this wine will turn out to be as profound as I once predicted. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2030." (01/2003)

2005 Dominique Laurent Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvée Tradition
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2005 Dominique Laurent Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvée Tradition. Stephen Tanzer writes: "Laurent has built his negociant business on buying essentially two types of wines: those that get what he calls a naif vinification, featuring gentle extraction and minimal intervention (Laurent often calls these "vins de paysanne") and those made entirely from whole clusters (the vendange entier method). Wherever possible he works with ancient vines, often true pinot fin. Because his elevage helps to preserve the genetic identity and the energy of the wines he selects, he tends to outperform in very ripe years. Not surprisingly, his 2005 collection offers plenty of thrills." (03/2007)

The 2012 Meursault 1er Cru Charmes from Dominique Lafon has a beautiful nose with lemon thyme, lime flower, mineral scents that are just so neatly poised and delineated. The palate has exquisite balance, perfectly judged acidity, wonderful poise and sustain in the mouth. 1998 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1998 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage (95RP, 95WE, 94ST, 93WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1998 Hermitage is also gorgeous, yet has more concentration and depth. Described as a 'granite year' by Jean-Louis, this puppy has searing, liquid rock-like qualities to go with ample dark fruit, gunpowder and flint. Structured, firm and backward, yet with a rock-star mid-palate and finish, give it another 3-5 years and drink bottles through 2028. Located in the tiny village of Mauves, just south of Hermitage, lies one of the true bastilles of traditionally made wines, and there are few vinous experiences that surpass getting to taste through the different terroirs of Hermitage and Saint Joseph in Chave’s cellar... 95+ (JD)" (08/2014)

Full-bodied, deep, and hugely concentrated, it is muscular, firm and displays the firmest structure of the Domaine de la Romanee-Conti’s 2003s. Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2012 Domaine de Montille Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru "Les Thorey" ((92-94RP), (90-92BH), (90-92ST)). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2012 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Thorey comes from the domaine’s 0.73-hectare parcel. This vintage is 100% whole cluster and sees around 50% new oak. It has an earthy, mushroom and dried blood-scented bouquet that is very engaging and well-defined. The palate is firm and grippy on the entry. This is very concentrated with a fine bead of acidity, yet the grip is gentle and not imposing. The swagger demonstrated at this nascent stage suggests that this may evolve into one of Domaine de Montille’s finest 2012. (NM)" (12/2013)

Bid on this bottle of 2003 E. Guigal "La Mouline" Côte-Rôtie (100RP, 99WS, (96-97ST), 96WE). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: " Always the most forward, the 2003 Cote Rotie La Mouline incorporates a whopping 11% Viognier and spent 48 months in new barrels. Heavenly stuff, with sweet cassis, kirsch, roasted meats and exotic spice and floral-driven aromas and flavors, it’s massive and voluptuous on the palate, with no hard edges, thrilling concentration and a finish to die for. It’s the texture that sets this cuvee apart, and it’s as good as it gets. I was able to taste the 1999 La Mouline just prior to this, and this 2003 is every bit as good, if not better. The wine has an inky, opaque, plum/purple color and a stunningly rich nose of mulberries, bramble berries, blackberries, licorice and incense as well as touches of toast and graphite. Fabulously concentrated and full-bodied, with a multidimensional mouthfeel, this profound Pavie is in mid-adolescence. It should evolve and continue to drink well for at least another 30-40 years. It was emotional tasting this wine, thinking of the late Christine Valette, who made this compelling wine while battling with considerable courage against an insidious disease. It is a great effort and a superstar of the vintage. Dense purple, it offers notes of white chocolate, blackberry, cassis and licorice as well as a hint of truffle and some subtle background oak. Full-bodied, multi-layered, and spectacularly pure and rich, it is a tour de force, and a great tribute to an incredible woman. Bid on this bottle of 2008 Domaine Roulot Meursault 1er Cru "Les Perrieres". (92WS, 92BH, 91ST). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "*Outstanding* There is still a trace of mild reduction that only marginally detracts from the appeal of the otherwise pretty aromas of acacia blossom, spiced pear and wet stone aromas. The delicious, gorgeously elegant and pure flavors possess a silky palate impression on the concentrated, explosive and stunningly long finish that seems to be composed of liquid rock. There is good energy to the intense and admirably rich full-bodied flavors that envelope the palate with velvety sap on the beautifully balanced and impressively persistent finish. I very much like the sense of underlying tension because despite this being a big wine with plenty of concentration, the balance is impeccable and there is absolutely nothing ponderous about this complete effort. Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2002 Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru "Aux Reignots" (OWC - 93VN) in original wood. Vinous: "There is enough reduction present to notice and I would thus strongly recommend decanting this first for 20 to 30 minutes. With air the natural spiciness and mineral character of a fine Reignots begins to emerge along with hints of menthol and maturing, but not fully mature, red and black pinot fruit. There is excellent detail and punch to the stony and wonderfully textured medium-bodied flavors that possess impeccable balance on the strikingly persistent finish. While this if far enough along such that it could be enjoyed now if desired, for my taste I would advise holding it for another 4 to perhaps 5 years or so. A lovely example. Jacques Selosse Lieux Dits Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut Les Carelles Le Mesnil sur Oger
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of Jacques Selosse Lieux Dits Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut Les Carelles Le Mesnil sur Oger (97VN). Vinous: "The brighter, more focused side of Chardonnay screams out of the glass in the NV (2008) Le Mesnil sur Oger Les Carelles. Here the flavors are distinctly high-toned, with plenty of citrus peel, white pepper, smoke and slate. Vivid and finely sculpted throughout, with a slightly reductive quality, the Mesnil remains tightly wound and in need of time in bottle. There is an implosive energy that is just waiting to emerge fully. When it does, the Mesnil will be utterly captivating. Actually, it already is. Disgorged February 17, 2015. Dosage is 2 grams/liter. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Latricieres-Chambertin is fresh, vibrant and impeccably harmonious. Dark cherries, crushed flowers, minerals and mint emerge from a beautifully articulated, mid-weight frame. All of the elements are very nicely balanced in this first-class, elegant Latricieres. Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2011 Domaine Emmanuel Rouget Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru "Cros Parantoux" ((91-93BH), 93ST). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright, full medium red. Pungent stony minerality dominates the nose. Juicy and imploded on the palate, with terrific chewy depth and a weightless quality to its intense, lightly saline flavors of dark berries, minerals, spices and flowers. Finishes with palate-staining power and subtle rising length. This vibrant, rather powerful wine is almost painful today, as there's nothing sweet or easy about it. 2005 Gracia, St-Emilion
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2005 Gracia, St-Emilion (98RP, 93ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This estate is a tiny micro-treasure in St.-Emilion. Owned by Michel Gracia and consisting of less than five acres of vines, it turned out a final blend in 2005 of 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, but only 5,000 bottles were produced. A wine pushing for perfection, notes of blueberry and blackberry dominate, but also underlying the fruit is a strong core of minerality and flowers. Full-bodied, rich, concentrated, and absolutely pure, this is a tour de force and a prodigious effort in this great, long-lived, slow-evolving vintage. There is a lovely coolness to the pure and well-detailed middle weight flavors that possess good ripeness of the supporting tannins, all wrapped in a mildly austere and balanced finish. This is very Gevrey in character but there is a sense of refinement as well as the structure is finely grained." (01/2013)

An incredible mouthful of stones and minerals, with uncanny intensity, juiciness and lift. At this point in my marathon tasting with Boillot, my handwriting was degenerating and I was using exclamation marks rather than adjectives. Flat-out great white Burgundy. An astounding, compelling wine with the classic Pauillac nose more often associated with its cross-street neighbor, Mouton-Rothschild, creme de cassis, there are also some violets and other assorted floral notes. The 2012 Romanée-Conti is one of the most spellbinding that I have tasted since I began 17 years ago. The bouquet is quite astonishing with brilliant delineation and focus, an almost disorientating sense of mineralité that soars from the glass and leaves you speechless. The palate impression is one of serious size, weight, power and punch with the still moderately structured and almost thick flavors being supporting by still firm but ripe tannins that are admirably buffered by plenty of dry extract on the massively persistent finish. This is flat out great and still youthful though as I noted there are now signs of maturity, indeed this could be drunk with pleasure though to my taste a few more years of cellaring would be beneficial ... 2010 Domaine Joseph Drouhin Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru (1.5L)
Bid on this magnum lot of 2010 Domaine Joseph Drouhin Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru (1.5L) ((93-95BH)). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Along with the Amoureuses and Musigny this possesses the most impressive aromatic profile in the entire range with its spicy, pure, elegant and highly complex liqueur of red and black cherry scents that evidence a top note of menthol. The suave and incredibly seductive flavors ooze a subtle natural sweetness yet underneath all of this youthful charm lurks a firm but ripe tannic spine that focuses the long and mouth coating finish. I'm not sure why but of all the wines in the extensive Drouhin portfolio, the Grands Echézeaux seems to have made the most progress in recent years and it now consistently ranks with the very best here." 1999 Domaine J-F Mugnier Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1999 Domaine J-F Mugnier Bonnes Mares Grand Cru. 'Bigger, fatter and richer than the Fuees. Lovely ripe fruit. Very good tannins. Splendid intensity and grip. Very long. Very lovely. Very fine.' (Clive Coates, The Vine) 'Similar in style to the 99 Les Amoureuses though less forward and sexy with stylish fruit, reserved though intense, medium weight flavors, velvety tannins and fine length. Should make a terrific bottle in 8 to 10 years despite the relatively young vines.' (Allen Meadows, Burghound.com) 'Bright, medium red-ruby. Briary aromas of blueberry, blackberry, mocha and minerals, along with a slight medicinal aspect. Good firm flavors of dark berries, minerals and violet. Not especially sweet or fleshy, and still quite tightly wound. Finishes with a firm tannic spine, a minty nuance and sneaky length.' (Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar)

Of the 2007 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape,Robert Parker's Wine Advocate writes: "One of the top wines in this incredible vintage is Avril's 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape, which is the normal blend of 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah and the rest of mix of permitted varieties. Brought up all in older foudre, it's a blockbuster, almost over-the-top, effort that gives up notes of kirsch, incense, dried flowers, spice and pepper. Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2002 Salon Blanc de Blancs Champagne (OWC - 100WE, 99JS, 97VN, 96BH) in original wood. Wine Enthusiast: "***Cellar Selection*** The 35th and most recent vintage of Salon since the house was founded in 1905 is memorable and magnificent. Made only from Chardonnay grown in the Grand Cru village of Les Mesnil-sur-Oger, it combines intense minerality, a crisp textured core and the beginnings of maturity. The depths of this wine, with its layers of fruit and steeliness, are superb. Even after 12 years, it still needs to age further. Drink from 2018. (RV)" (12/2014)

2003 Chapoutier "L'Ermite" Ermitage Rouge
Bid on this bottle of 2003 Chapoutier "L'Ermite" Ermitage Rouge (100RP, 99WS, 97ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "In terms of pure perfection and singularity, the black/purple-colored 2003 Ermitage l’Ermite is hauntingly perfect. A gorgeous perfume of flowers, black and blue fruits intermixed with a liqueur of rocks soars from the glass of this extraordinary wine. Full-bodied and multilayered, with magnificent concentration, and a stunning freshness and precision that are hard to believe given the frightfully low acidity, this is an extraordinary expression of terroir and vintage character that must be tasted to be believed. While it will be less approachable in its youth than some of its siblings, it will last for 40-50 years." (02/2006)

Full-bodied, with layers of richness, this creamy-textured, fleshy wine is at present more evolved and dramatic than its sibling, the 1992 Laville. Wine Enthusiast: "With its distinctive antique bottle and gold etched label dominated by a sheep, this is definitely a move away from classic Bordeaux bottling. It is good that the wine can support the presentation. The fruit is so ripe, it almost tastes of raisins, but that sweetness is finely balanced by the dry tannins and concentrated texture. Cool, floral aromas of red berries, violet, cocoa powder, graphite and spicy oak, along with a whiff of smoked meat. Juicy, sharply delineated and austere; a classic, adamantly dry claret with superb intensity and grip. This is beginning to close up, unlike the '99. Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2000 Troplong Mondot, St-Emilion (96RP, 92ST, 92WE, 91WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Extremely young with an unbelievable deep purple color, the 2000 Troplong Mondot has hardly budged since I tasted it in 2003. Two recent tastings confirmed that this is the greatest Troplong Mondot between their profound 1990 and more recent vintages such as 2005, 2008, and 2009. Copious chocolate, graphite, blackberry, blueberry, cassis, and ink characteristics are present in this full-bodied, powerful, massive St.-Emilion. While the tannins are noticeable, they are better integrated than they were seven years ago, and the fruit, extract, and richness clearly outweigh the wine’s structure. This 2000 will benefit from another 4-5 years of cellaring (longer than I originally predicted), and has at least two decades of drinkability ahead of it. (RP)" (06/2010)

Of the 2004 Philippe Colin Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru “Les Chenevottes”,Wine Spectator writes: "A creamy, well-integrated version, sporting peach, apple, mineral and piecrust aromas and flavors. Exceptionally full-bodied, with an unctuous texture, and a thick, rich, expansive mid-palate, this superbly concentrated wine appears to be a worthy rival to this estate's phenomenal 1989 and 1990. Another terrific Lignier Clos de la Roche in a long string of them; just be aware that this will require moderate patience. Drink: 2013+" (01/2007)

2007 Le Vieux Donjon Chateauneuf-du-Pape (1.5L)
Bid on this magnum lot of 2007 Le Vieux Donjon Chateauneuf-du-Pape (1.5L) ((93-96ST), 95RP, 94WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Still backward and unevolved, the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape (75% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre, and 5% other authorized varietals) was aged completely in foudre. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by a reticent, but burgeoning bouquet of black cherries, plums, black currants, garrigue, lavender, and licorice. One can sense the weight, power, and richness in the mouth, but the tannins are there, and the wine also has very good acids. Consequently, patience will be required, and this is one 2007 where 2-3 years of bottle age is warranted. The wine is capable of lasting 15-20+ years..." (10/2009)

Bid on this bottle of 2005 M. Chapoutier "De l'Orée" Ermitage Blanc (99RP, 96WS, 94ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Deep, rich and full-throttle, yet still elegant and focused, the 2005 Ermitage Cuvee de l’Oree is 100% Marsanne from the Les Murets lieu-dit and was brought up all in demi-muids. Offering off the hook notes of quince, honeysuckle, liquid rock, orange blossom and sautéed peach, this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness, notable freshness and purity, and a crazy long finish. White wine doesn’t get much better, and this beauty will have another two to three decades of longevity. (JD)" (03/2016)

1999 Mouton Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1999 Mouton Rothschild, Pauillac (93JS, 93RP, 91WS, 90ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The beautiful 1999 Mouton Rothschild may be a modern day clone of their 1962 or 1985. Its saturated ruby/purple color is followed by sumptuous aromas of cedar wood, creme de cassis, wood smoke, coffee, and dried herbs. The wine is forward, lush, and full-bodied. It is already complex as well as succulent, fleshy, and long. Tannin in the finish suggests more nuances will emerge in 4-5 years. It is a complex, classic Mouton. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2030. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This gorgeous, fully mature, complex Pape Clement exhibits notes of smoky tobacco, earth, loamy soil, forest floor, black cherries, plums and cassis. Medium to full-bodied, fresh and lively, the acids have fallen away and the tannins have melted into an opulent, fleshy, classic Bordeaux. Consume it over the next 10-15 years. Bravo! Bid on this bottle of 2006 Pierre Usseglio "Mon Aïeul" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (96RP, 94WS, 93VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the gems in the vintage is the 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Mon Aieul, which in 2006 was 95% Grenache and 5% Syrah. Elegant, seamless and weightless, yet with full-bore intensity in its kirsch liqueur, garrigue and licorice-driven aromas and flavors, this sensational 2006 provides that rare mix of both hedonistic and intellectual pleasure. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2007 Domaine de la Mordorée "Reine des Bois" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (97RP, (93-96ST), 96WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Evolving beautifully, the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de La Reine des Bois has shed some of its crazy tannin and is showing a more layered, voluptuous profile. Possessing beautiful kirsch, blackberry, candied licorice, flowers and lavender, it offers knockout richness and decadence to go with brilliant purity of fruit, superb concentration, and a full-bodied, layered mouthfeel. Allen Meadows - Burghound: "*** Don't Miss - Outstanding! *** Moderate reduction is enough to suppress the fruit. By contrast there is excellent freshness and the same borderline painful intensity on the chiseled and strongly mineral-driven medium weight flavors that culminate in an equally restrained and tightly coiled finish. This knockout effort has that 'wow' factor as it really stains the palate on the hugely long backend. Highly recommended." (06/2014)

A racy iron note is now in full throat on the finish. The commanding minerality should carry this through a second stage of life. (Web- 2012)"

Its enticing nose reveals extraordinarily refined aromas of a myriad of flowers soaked in cherries, blueberries and traces of sweet mocha. This oily-textured, full-bodied, perfectly harmonious, and compellingly delineated wine could not be any more elegant. It possesses awesome depth, concentration, and purity in its violet and cherry cream pie-flavored personality. Moreover, its formidably long finish displays a strong yet satiny backbone. Complex aromas of black fruits, mocha and underbrush. Sweet, dense and sappy, with a deep core of spicy fruit. Seems less closed today than most of Roumier's other 2001s owing to its absence of hard edges. But this very serious, thick wine really needs five or six years of bottle aging and should last well. Bid on this bottle of 2013 DRC Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanee-Conti Grand Cru (97RP, 97VN, 96BH). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "he 2013 Romanée-Conti Grand Cru was picked in the afternoon of October 8 at a yield of 17.5 hectoliters per hectare. I remember this was taciturn in barrel vis-à-vis the La Tâche, which is commonly the case, however here it sprints from the blocks thanks to a life-affirming bouquet of red plum, wild strawberry, cold wet limestone and black truffle that segues into something almost girolles-like, even smoky. Like the 2013 La Tâche, it is very mercurial in the glass and to that end, I stretched my sample out for 10-15 minutes. The palate is medium-bodied and very harmonious on the entry. Filigree tannin frame this wine, perfect acidity lending freshness and tension, here a gradual build towards a delineated, almost edgy finish. It brought to the forefront of my mind an actor about to utter the first line of a play. Give it several years in bottle before y

This is a richly textured, intense wine loaded with ripe fruit and sweet toasted oak. Today it remains quite primary, but it will be stunner in a few years’ time, once the full range of its tertiary aromas and flavors have developed. Patience is the key. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Chateau Margaux, a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc, must be a strong contender for wine of the vintage. It offers everything you desire from this First Growth. It is blessed with breathtaking delineation and freshness on the nose, understated at first and then blossoming with mineral-infused black fruit, hints of blueberry, crushed stone and violet. The palate is perfectly balanced with filigree tannin, perfect acidity, a wine where everything seems to be in its right place. Blackberry, crushed stone at the front of the mouth, just a touch of spice towards the finish that shows supreme control. This is a Margaux that seems to light up the senses. It was outstanding in its youth...something that has not changed one bit over the intervening two decades. This may well turn out to be the Left Bank pinnacle of the 1990s. Tasted Ju

2010 Domaine de la Pousse d'Or Volnay 1er Cru "En Caillerets"
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2010 Domaine de la Pousse d'Or Volnay 1er Cru "En Caillerets" ((90-93ST), 91BH). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright ruby-red. Hints of game, sexy oak and minerals on the nose. Sweet, suave and seamless; more complex than the 60 Ouvrees but less obviously vibrant today. Showing more stony influence than primary fruit. Finishes a bit edgy, with a hint of chocolate. (ST)" (01/2012)

2011 Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru "La Maltroie"
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2011 Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru "La Maltroie" (92ST, 90BH). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright straw-yellow. Musky white peach, nut oils and gingery spices on the nose. Silky, stony and concentrated; ripe yet dry, conveying an impression of solid dry extract. The fullest of these premier crus but shows very good stone and menthol reserve. Classic refined Chassagne wine with a long, bright finish. Very strong for this cuvee. (ST)" (09/2013)

2010 Roche de Bellene Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru "Aux Malconsorts"
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2010 Roche de Bellene Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru "Aux Malconsorts" ((91-94BH), 93ST, 93WS). Allen Meadows - Burghound: " This offers up the most complex nose of these three Vosne 1ers with an exuberantly spicy black fruit and cassis scents. There is excellent size and weight to the powerful and admirably concentrated broad-shouldered flavors that evidence plenty of muscle and punch on the mouth coating finish. The underlying tannins are exceptionally firm yet completely ripe and I very much like the explosive finale that seems to go on and on. In 2010, this easily delivers grand cru quality but note well that plenty of patience will be required." (04/2012)

2007 Domaine William Fevre Chablis Grand Cru "Les Clos"
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2007 Domaine William Fevre Chablis Grand Cru "Les Clos" (96BH, 96WE, 95ST, 94RP, 93WS). Wine Enthusiast: " *Cellar Selection* From the largest of the Chablis Grand Cru, this wine shows a lively fruit character but also a powerful, taut mineral streak that comes through to dominate. There is no doubt this needs aging, with its steely edge and vivid acidity." (07/2010)
