French Wine

When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its regions, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and occasionally as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a 100 lives. To understand and appreciate French wine, you only need to begin tasting them. Check out some of the top picks that our buyers have tracked down - several of these wines are imported directly from France.

2005 Domaine Bouchard Père et Fils Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2005 Domaine Bouchard Père et Fils Clos Vougeot Grand Cru ((93-96BH), (91-94ST), (89-91RP)). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "*Don't miss!* Note that I was shown two versions of this wine, one from Domaine fruit and another that was purchased. Prost indicated that there might be two wines released or they might be blended. The wine reviewed here is from Domaine fruit and was significantly better than the purchased example. A ripe, reserved and cool nose of flat out gorgeous complexity leads to beautifully delineated, powerful and robust flavors that somehow manage to remain understated on the hugely long and spicy finish. This has the 'wow' factor in spades and is a strong candidate for the Clos de Vougeot of the vintage (along with the Leroy and Dr. George Mugneret versions). Drink: 2020+" (04/2007)

Wine Enthusiast: " *Cellar Selection* Big and tannic, while at the same time potentially rich and smooth, this is, as always, an impressive wine. It has weight and dense texture. A solid wine that shows great potential; for now, revel in the plum juice and final acidity that provide a bright counterpoint to the solid, brooding structure." (12/2010)

Of the 2004 Clos Saint-Jean "Deus Ex Machina" Châteauneuf du Pape ,Robert Parker's Wine Advocate writes: "The 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape Deux-Ex Machina (always a blend of 60% tank-aged Grenache and 40% barrel-aged Mourvedre) is easily one of the top 2-3 wines in the vintage. Gorgeously perfumed, with aromas of smoked duck, lavender, black cherry, currants and licorice, it bucks the vintage profile and is voluptuously textured, with full-bodied richness and depth, masses of fine tannin and a seamless profile. Hedonistic, yet beautifully layered and balanced, it’s a great drink now, yet will continue to evolve gracefully for another decade. (JD) " (02/2014)

Sweet Spot Outstanding! and 91-93 Points from Allen Meadows: "Moderate wood frames a classy and very densely fruited nose that mixes soy, clove and anise notes together with violet and blue and black berry aromas that continue onto the sappy, exuberant and relatively powerful flavors that coat the mouth on the linear and driving finish. Despite the punch and vibrancy, this is essentially a wine of finesse and nuance rather than structure and muscle." (Burghound 01/07)

Bid on this bottle of 2007 Domaine du Clos du Caillou "Reserve les Clos du Caillou" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (100RP, 95ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Just another perfect wine (ho hum), the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve Le Clos du Caillou is an incredible effort that matches the 2010 in terms of quality, yet has a larger-than-life, richer and more over- the-top style. Loaded to the gills with sweet black cherry, cassis, licorice, lavender, roasted meats and creamy licorice, it hits the palate with a massive, full-bodied profile that carries awesome fruit, building, sweet tannin, incredible depth and blockbuster length. 1996 Maison Roche de Bellene Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru "Collection Bellenum"
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1996 Maison Roche de Bellene Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru "Collection Bellenum". Nicolas Potel began making wine at his family estate, Domaine de la Pousse d'Or, then started his own negociant company in 1996. Says Jancis Robinson: "With a popular and respected wine producer for a father and a notable taster for a mother, Nicolas grew up with a keen sensibility for wine and an enviable network of contacts the length of the Côte d'Or...I've now had two chances to taste wines from this unique collection of wines that have moved only once in their lives, from the original cellar to Potels...I'd say they magnificently reflect the reality of Burgundy in that they are very varied, provide a thoroughly useful overview of how different vintages are developing, and include some completely stunning wines..." Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2005 Langoa-Barton, St-Julien (93RP, 92W&S, 92WE, 92WS, 90ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Château Langoa Barton 2005 offers plenty of concentration on the nose: blackberries, blueberry, a touch of cedar and tobacco emerging from the glass, opening and gaining intensity all the time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. This is beautifully balanced in the mouth, perhaps just a little conservative but with great precision and length. It has the freshness and vitality to be approachable now, though I would prefer to leave this for another 4 or 5 years. (NM)" (02/2015)

Bid on this 5-bottle lot of 2007 Domaine de Montille Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru (93BH, 93ST, 92RP). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Pineapple and wet stone aromas. Big and sweet on entry, then quite closed in the middle, with a light touch to the lemon, crushed stone and mineral flavors. Lovely silky wine with very long, palate-staining flavors of lemon and minerals. But this seems less tightly coiled than the outstanding Cailleret. (ST)" (09/2009)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2001 Domaine Louis Jadot Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru (93BH, 90ST). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A gorgeously perfumed, highly complex and wonderfully spicy nose combines with hints of earth and mostly red berry fruit aromas that are beginning to display some secondary development. The broad-shouldered and solidly powerful flavors also reflect the same attractive depth as the nose with a lovely minerality and excellent definition before culminating in a long, sappy and impeccably well-balanced finish. While sufficiently mature to be enjoyable now, for my taste I would allow another 4 to 6 years of cellar time first. In sum, while there is good punch and power, this is essentially a Clos de Bèze of refinement and elegance." (07/2012)

Yellow fruits, minerals and crushed stone on the nose, along with smoky and petrolly nuances. Layers of minerality provide the backbone as this subtle, gracious wine seems to waft from the glass. Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2006 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru "Champans" (92BH, 91WS, 90ST). Allen Meadows - Burghound: " *Outstanding* I was mildly surprised to find a bit of reduction in the bottled version though not enough to completely hide the otherwise ripe, pure and highly complex red berry fruit aromas nuanced by a hint of iron oxide (a rusty earth character) that precedes rich, full and intense flavors that carry sleek muscle and real punch and power, all wrapped in a serious, chiseled and built to age finish. 1982 La Mission Haut-Brion, Graves
Bid on this bottle of 1982 La Mission Haut-Brion, Graves (100RP, 97JS, 95ST, 94WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the handful of perfect wines of the vintage, the La Mission still possesses a remarkably dense ruby/purple color with only a slight garnet and lightening at the edge. The fruit-dominated aromatics reveal lots of cassis, blueberry, scorched earth, black truffle, incense, graphite and high-class, unsmoked cigar tobacco-like notes. Still exhibiting remarkable concentration, enormous body, silky sweet tannin, and no perceptible acidity, the 1982 remains fresh, delineated and super-compelling...this modern day legend shows no signs of decline. In fact, it may not have yet reached its peak. Anticipated maturity: now-2060+. (RP)" (08/2012)

Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2010 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru "Les Preuses" (OWC - 97BH, 97VN, 96ST, 95RP) in original wood. Allen Meadows - Burghound: "(from two parcels of vines that total 2.55 ha, or 22% of the entire appellation). A pure, cool, airy and exceptionally stylish nose of mineral reduction, green fruit, citrus zest, iodine and shellfish slides gracefully into rich, round and brilliantly well-delineated medium-bodied flavors that possess a silky mouth feel and an explosively long and bone dry finish. This impeccably poised, brilliantly concentrated yet understated effort is a textbook example of Les Preuses with its Zen-like harmony and sheer class. Along with the Les Clos, this is arguably one of the very best wines of the vintage." (09/2012)

Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 1989 Huet "Le Mont - Premiere Trie" Vouvray Moelleux (OWC - 99RP) in original wood. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Luminous golden-yellow in color, the ginger-flavored 1989 Vouvray Le Mont Moelleux Première Trie shows the subtle and herbal-flavored, coolish and aristocratic bouquet typical for this lieu-dit, which is adjacent to the Loire with its green-tinged marl and silex soils. Very clear and delicate yet intense and concentrated fruit aromas, along with chamomile and mineral flavors on the nose, migrate to an extremely finesse-full and highly elegant palate with sweet peach aromas and a great and intense, stimulatingly pure, precise and salty but most of all endless finish. This Le Mont seems terribly sweet but isn't technically spoken: 79 grams per liter is 13 grams less than in the Haut-Lieu 1ere Trie and just a third of the Clos du Bourg 1ere Trie Essai. However, there is no fat or boldness here since the sugar is lapped around from the vivacious ac

2007 Vincent Dancer Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2007 Vincent Dancer Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru ((91-94BH), 93ST). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Here there is a bit more wood influence but notably less than in prior vintages, which is all to the good as this wine was sometimes over oaked. In 2007, the elegant, pure and ripe aromas are allowed center stage as they introduce detailed, stony and balanced medium-bodied flavors that are powerfully focused and detailed on the driving and equally explosive finish. This is an understated, classy and complete stunner of a wine." (07/2009)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2007 Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru "Les Chaumes" (91BH, (89-91ST)). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good deep red. At once liqueur-like and sappy on the nose, with aromas of black cherry, raspberry and flowers. Sweet on entry, then much firmer in the middle, with a fine-grained texture and a captivating stony quality. This dense but elegant wine spreads out nicely on the dusty finish, which features lovely lingering perfume. (ST)" (03/2009)

Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2009 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac (OWC - 98RP, 97JS, 96WE, 96WS, 93ST, 93VN) in original wood. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Performing even better from bottle than it did from barrel, this appears to be the finest Lynch Bages since the 2000, 1990 and 1989. According to the chateau, the 2009 has the highest level of polyphenols ever measured as well as high alcohol (nearly 13.5%). A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest largely Merlot with touches of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it is an expressive, voluptuously textured effort with unctuosity and powerful, juicy, succulent blackberry and black currant flavors, low acids, a layered, massive mouthfeel, but no sense of heaviness or fatigue. Light on its feet despite its stunning concentration and multi-layered mouthfeel, this wine has fabulous intensity, richness and length. This full-bodied classic boasts a dense purple color as well as a superb nose of graphite, creme de cassis, forest floor, licorice and a hint of truffles, low acidity, and extravagant richness. It has such purity and power yet it's reserved and beautiful. It's one of the best Calons ever. I drank a bottle with some friends in Manhattan last week and it was the wine of the evening. It was full-bodied with silky tannins and a focused and intense finish. Lots of currant and berry character and hints of dried spices. It's finally opening up and giving real pleasure now like so many 1995 Bordeaux at the moment." (05/2014)

2010 Domaine Galevan Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2010 Domaine Galevan Châteauneuf-du-Pape (95RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape is one of the finest traditional cuvees I have tasted as well as a sleeper of the vintage. Made from 90% Grenache and 10% Mourvedre from 55-year-old vines, it exhibits a dense ruby/purple color as well as a stunning perfume of creme de cassis, kirsch, incense, licorice and a vague notion of beef blood and roasted Provencal herbs. All of the fruit comes from vines planted in the northern end of the appellation. This exquisite, full-throttle Chateauneuf du Pape should drink well for 15 or more years. It is a major star of the vintage, and probably is reasonably priced as well. A microscopic estate owned by Coralie Goumarre, Domaine Galevan was established, remarkably, in 1780, but the first estate-bottled wine did not emerge until 1968. I was blown away by these four red wine cuvees, and both of the 2010s have jumped dramatically in score since I taste

Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 2011 Domaine Ostertag Muenchberg Riesling Grand Cru Alsace (94RP, 93JS, 92ST, 91WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Ostertag's 2011 Riesling Muenchberg mingles fresh, very ripe apple and pear with candied grapefruit and kumquat rinds, caramelized parsnip, caraway, and fresh ginger, all wreathed in peat-like and charred smokiness, and putting me in mind of a Riesling dosed with Gewurztraminer. There is an uncanny combination of body and high glycerol with brightness here, leading to a finish of exuberant juiciness, zesty cut, interactive complexity and formidable sheer grip. I would anticipate this meriting return visits though at least 2025. (DS)" (08/2014)

Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2011 Domaine Bruno Clair Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Clos de Fonteny" (90BH, 90RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos du Fonteny 2011 has a more accomplished and complete nose compared to its peers in the flight, offering raspberry, briary, blackcurrant and mineral scents with a sense of confidence. Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2010 Domaine de Courcel Pommard 1er Cru "Grand Clos des Épenots" (93BH, 93ST, 90WS). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good bright full red. Deep, nuanced aromas of red berries, spices and underbrush. Rich, vinous and deep, with sweet redcurrant fruit lifted by peppery spices. Shows terrific vivacity and precision in spite of its modest acidity (the pH here is 3.7, according to winemaker Yves Confuron), no doubt due to the whole-cluster fermentation. This generous, sensual wine finishes with fine but seriously gripping tannins. 93+ (ST)" (03/2013)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2007 Domaine Roulot Meursault 1er Cru "Les Charmes" (93BH, 92ST, 90RP). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Unlike this wine in 750 ml (see there review herein), there was no touch of unabsorbed sulfur on the nose though there was a mild note of reduction that still allowed the aromas of acacia blossom, hazelnut and brioche to be appreciated. There is good richness to the detailed, textured and silky medium-bodied flavors that caress the palate on the minty and still noticeably tight finish. Not surprisingly in magnum format this is still very much on the way up so I would recommend giving this at least another 5 to 10 years of cellar time first." (12/2015)

An inky/purple color is followed by aromas and flavors of creme de cassis, blackberries, charcoal, coffee and licorice. It is a rich, sweet, silky-textured, and medium-bodied wine that offers delightfully floral black cherry flavors and hints of toast. (PR)" (08/1998)

1998 Domaine Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru "Clos des Chenes"
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 1998 Domaine Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru "Clos des Chenes" (92RP, 92ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the Clos des Chênes vertical, the 1998 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes was one of the surprise packages within the flights of recent vintages. Frédéric Lafarge commented that this was a vintage "for those that worked hard." It has a surprisingly aromatic, almost corpulent bouquet with black plum, Hoisin and wild strawberry sprinkled with white pepper and a hint of morel mushrooms. The palate has a wonderful sense of balance, real finesse here with lace-like tannin and an exquisite, harmonious vintage that really dispels the notion of this being a difficult Burgundy vintage. Frédéric and Michel Lafarge must have worked very hard this year. (NM)" (11/2015)

Highly concentrated, densely packed and built to age. As young as it is, it also shows a lovely velvety texture rare for this vintage. Finishes with terrific breadth, subtle minerality and noble tannins. I've been a fan of this wine since the outset." (06/2005)

1996 Ducru-Beaucaillou, St-Julien
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1996 Ducru-Beaucaillou, St-Julien (96RP, 94ST, 91WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 is long, with a deep mid-palate. It also reveals tannin in the finish. This wine is remarkable. It is muscular, concentrated, and classic. Bottled in late June, 1998, it exhibits a saturated ruby/purple color, as well as a knock-out nose of minerals, licorice, cassis, and an unmistakable lead pencil smell that I often associate with top vintages of Lafite-Rothschild. It is sweet and full-bodied, yet unbelievably rich with no sense of heaviness or flabbiness. The wine possesses high tannin, but it is extremely ripe, and the sweetness of the black currant, spice-tinged Cabernet Sauvignon fruit is pronounced. This profound, backward Ducru-Beaucaillou is a must purchase. (RP)" (04/1999)

There is excellent power and plenty of punch to the broad-shouldered and solidly well-concentrated flavors that possess fine mid-palate concentration before culminating in a balanced and exceptionally persistent finish. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Possibly the youngest wine of all the 2005 Médocs in terms of its evolution, at age 10 the inky purple 2005 Pontet-Canet tastes more like a two-year-old wine. Loads of pure blueberry, blackberry and cassis fruit are present along with a hint of licorice and background oak. It is full-bodied, ripe, and excruciatingly fresh, vigorous and exuberant. This is a tour de force, and a sensational effort that rivals the first growths. Give it another 5-10 years of cellaring, and drink it over the following 30-40 years. 97+ points." (06/2015)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is a denser version of the 1990 that stylistically reminds me of what the young 1959 probably tasted like. Still backward with a deep ruby/plum color revealing only a touch of lightening at the edge, the wine offers up an extraordinary nose of caramelized herbs, smoke, cedar, pen ink, black currants, and earth. The gorgeous aromatics are followed by a full-bodied, plump, rich, fleshy wine with low acidity. With 6-8 hours decanting in a closed decanter, it will offer beautiful drinking, but it needs another 5-8 years to reach full maturity. It is capable of lasting 50-60 years. 97+ (RP)" (06/2009)

After a six week maceration, it spent nearly 24 months in new oak prior to being bottled unfined and unfiltered...The inky/ruby/purple-colored 2001 exhibits a tight but promising nose of crushed stones, a liqueur of blackberries, cherries, and black currants, and subtle smoke and licorice in the background. Powerful, with impressive elegance, fine harmony among its elements, a multi-layered texture, it has a finish that lasts for 50+ seconds. There is considerable tannin, but it is well-integrated. Wine & Spirits: "If a wine could ever make you want to pull the top down on your '68 Ferrari convertible, rip off the rearview mirror and take off, this is it. It has a different kind of energy than the '02 Cristal Rosé, which is more ethereal, like strawberries at the right hand of some ancient Gallic god. This is more insolent, brash, earth bound. All the scents and flavors seem to emanate from limestone, as does the acidity, which hits at the front of the mouth and powers through the wine with the kind of solar energy that lifts mist off the white chalk on a cool morning in Cramant. 1986 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1986 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac (94RP, 93ST, 90WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1986 is finally emerging from the dormant stage that many of the wines from this vintage (especially the Medocs) have been going through. It is a full-bodied, still backward wine that will appeal to classicists and old line traditionalists given its firm structure and austere tannins. Nevertheless, the color is a healthy deep garnet and the wine exhibits wonderful freshness along with notes of underbrush, damp earth, black currants, cedar and new saddle leather. Well-balanced with good depth, medium to full body, and a tannic (although not excessively so) finish, this may not be the most finesse-styled, elegant Lynch Bages ever produced, but it is an interesting Pauillac that will benefit from another 3-4 years of cellaring. While it may never hit the peaks achieved by great Lynch Bages vintages, it will be one of those rare wines that will last 40+ years. (RP)" (08/2011)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1989 Léoville-Las-Cases, St-Julien (96WS, 90RP). Wine Spectator: "Very ripe, with raisin and dried fruits on the nose. You can smell the sun-dried grapes. Full-bodied, delivering firm tannins and a very fresh palate. Long and flavorful, offering currant, berries and all sorts of dark fruits, but turns lightly earthy and floral. This is a thoroughly complex wine. Just starting to really open into the mature 20-year-old wine it is, but such a great life ahead of it. Muscular. (Web-2010)"

Although close to full maturity, it has at least 20-25 years of life remaining." (06/2009)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2005 Domaine Louis Jadot Clos Vougeot Grand Cru ((93-95RP), (92-94BH), 94ST, 94WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Charred meat, black currant, and wet stone characterize the bouquet of Jadot’s 2005 Clos Vougeot. Savory, salty, brightly-fruited and invigoratingly juicy on the palate, this displays more energy and acidity than I would have expected from the appellation. For all of the clarity and juiciness of this wine’s fruit, grilled meat and stony earthiness combined with the emergence of formidable tannins and subtle but persistent cyanic and iodine notes to turn its formidably long finish somewhat austere. But this is going to result in an exciting rendition of its terroir if left in the dark for at least 6-8 years. (DS)" (06/2007)

Superripe but utterly sappy nose offers an essence of black berries. Very tightly wrapped but pure and precise, with a superb core of sappy fruits and spices. Here the new oak has been thoroughly absorbed by the wine sheer density of material. The creamy, silky texture is apparent on the palate-staining finish. Allen Meadows - Burghound: " This is sufficiently ripe that it too flirts with a hint of exotic yellow fruit that adds another dimension to the floral, pear and white peach aromas. There is a wonderfully seductive mouth feel to the big, rich and relatively powerful flavors that possess a borderline painful intensity on the citrusy, energetic, detailed, driving and hugely long finish. While there are any number of fine producers of Referts, Carillon is in my experience the reference standard and this wine only corroborates that conclusion. Brilliant." (06/2013)

Allen Meadows - Burghound: " *Outstanding* A slightly riper and more complex if less elegant nose demonstrates a distinctly different aromatic profile with a much earthier character to the spice, red pinot and mildly sauvage scents. The intense and strikingly pure flavors ooze a fine and relatively discreet minerality, all wrapped in a tautly muscled, balanced and persistent finish. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Just beginning to come around and strut its enormous potential, this wine at age 15 has been evolving like a glacier. The wine has an inky, opaque, plum/purple color and a stunningly rich nose of mulberries, bramble berries, blackberries, licorice and incense as well as touches of toast and graphite. Fabulously concentrated and full-bodied, with a multidimensional mouthfeel, this profound Pavie is in mid-adolescence. It should evolve and continue to drink well for at least another 30-40 years. The wine has a dense, dark plum/ruby color with just a bit of lightening at the edge. A sweet nose of black cherries intermixed with balsam wood, vanilla, and Provencal herbs has an almost Rhone-like character to it. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1990 Léoville-Las-Cases, St-Julien (96RP, 94ST, 93WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "As one might expect, this is a brilliant wine, but it remains shockingly young, even for the fast evolving 1990s. Its deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by a classic, nearly restrained set of aromatics that includes notions of sweet black cherries, black currants, lead pencil, and wet stones. In the mouth, it is full-bodied, and while technically low in acidity, there is a freshness, delineation, and classicism in this full-throttle, rich, concentrated, impeccable 1990. While still youthful, it is easy to appreciate despite its substantial tannins. It is not quite as backward as the 1990 Lafite Rothschild or 1990 Latour. Anticipated maturity: now-2035. It offers an extraordinary aromatic display of spring flowers, camphor, sweet red and black fruits, a hint of licorice, and no evidence of its 100% new oak cask aging. Round and generous with low acidity, but an opulent, full-bodied richness that is fresh with laser-like precision, this stunning wine is just beginning to reach its plateau of full maturity, where it should remain for another three decades. Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright red with ruby highlights. Captivating aromas of blackberry, black raspberry, cherry pit and licorice, plus a whiff of buttery pastry. Ripe, dense and suave, with strong acidity and an herbal edge framing the flavors of crushed berries and black cherry. Finishes with serious tannic spine and excellent length. 1975 Cheval Blanc, St-Emilion
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1975 Cheval Blanc, St-Emilion (95VN, 90RP). Vinous: "Bright ruby-red with a hint of garnet. Enticing floral nose offers very pure raspberry and red cherry aromas, complicated by tobacco and bay leaf notes. Then sweet, dense and smooth in the mouth, with rich red cherry, plum and peppery flavors. Finishes with still chewy but noble tannins and a trace of heat. A great Cheval Blanc that is more massive than usual, showing plenty of concentrated, complex flavors and a wonderfully rich texture. In this vintage, Cheval Blanc benefited from its earlier ripening soils, which allowed the grapes to be harvested at optimal phenolic ripeness, something that eluded other Bordeaux estates that may have picked too early. The harvest took place from September 26 to October 8. This was the first vintage of Cheval Blanc ever sold en primeur. (Ian D'Agata)" (10/2011)

Bid on this bottle of 1990 Domaine Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Clos St. Jacques" (96RP, 93BH, 90WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Jadot, which has major holdings in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin, has turned out some stunning wines at the premier cru level. It produced a profound Gevrey-Chambertin-Clos St.-Jacques. Andre Gagey, who, along with his son, Pierre-Henri, and their winemaker, Jacques Lardiere, participated in the tasting, announced he had put considerable quantities of this particular wine in his cellar to "help get him through his retirement." The color is a saturated dark ruby. The nose explodes from the glass, offering a melange of scents, including black-raspberries, toasty new oak, cloves, vanilla, and candy. In the mouth, there is astonishing richness, a thick, well-defined texture, and a flamboyant, moderately tannic finish that lasts well over a minute. The personality hallmarks of the 1990 vintage, the chewy, super-ripe character of the Pinot Noir an

There is excellent richness and outstanding size, weight and power to the overtly muscular flavors that are blessed with an abundance of dry extract on the explosively long and palate staining finish. It has life-affirming delineation on the nose with scents of red currant, raspberry and cranberry, and an underlying mineralite of its own. The palate is supremely well-balanced with the terroir really percolating through the fruit, more so than the more fruit-driven 2009. The palate is fresh and vibrant on the entry with pleasing, mouth-watering salinity, easing back toward the finish with Granny Smith apples and a healthy dash of lemongrass. Bid on this 3-magnum lot of 2010 Château de Puligny Montrachet Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru (1.5L) ((91-94BH)). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "An unusually expressive nose of yellow orchard fruits includes overt hints of the exotic as well as an abundance of wet stone notes. There is excellent richness and volume to the plush and extract-rich large-scaled flavors that possess a seductive texture on the delicious, complex and lingering finish that is linear, citrus-inflected and quite dry, all wrapped in plenty of toasty oak. 1982 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1982 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac (100JS, 100RP, 98ST, 98WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This wine remains one of the legends of Bordeaux. It has thrown off the backward, youthful style that existed during its first 25 years of life, and over the last 4-5 years has developed such secondary nuances as cedar and spice box. The creme de cassis, underlying floral note, full-bodied power, extraordinary purity, multilayered texture, and finish of over a minute are a showcase for what this Chateau accomplished in 1982. The wine is still amazingly youthful, vibrant, and pure. It appears capable of remaining fruity and vibrant in 2082! Thank God it is beginning to budge, as I would like to drink most of my supply before I kick the bucket. This is a great, still youthful wine, and, on occasion, one does understand the hierarchy of Bordeaux chateaux when you see the complexity and brilliance of this first-growth. (RP)" (06/2009)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2000 Haut-Brion, Pessac-Léognan (99RP, 96ST, 96WE, 95JS, 94W&S, 94WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2000 Haut-Brion (a blend of 51% Merlot, 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc) showed incredibly at the tasting, and for me is one of the three or four most prodigious wines of the vintage. A compelling nose of roasted herbs, scorched earth, sweet blueberries, plums, black currants, and a hint of graphite is followed by a deep, layered, sumptuously textured, full-bodied Haut-Brion, but one with extraordinary complexity. This wine seems more evolved and approachable than I had expected it to be at age 10. My window of maturity seven years ago was 2012-2040, but I would change that to 2010-2050. (RP)" (06/2010)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2012 Vincent Dancer Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru (95RP, 94ST, 93BH). It yields just a single barrel per annum. Leaving my glass aside for five minutes, it reveals an entrancing bouquet with hints of blackberry leaf, citrus peel, flint and Alpine streams. Its dense purple color reveals a slight lightening at the edge and the stunning bouquet offers classic notes of creme de cassis, subtle smoke, oak and graphite. 1990 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1990 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac (96RP, 95WS). However, a bottle tasted, of all places, in Seoul, Korea in February, was only a few points short of perfection. That amazing performance motivated me to pull another bottle out of my cellar and follow it over the course of two days. Sure enough, by the second day the wine was roaring from the glass. The 1990 Lafite has turned out far better than my early assessment. While it still possesses some firmness, and performs like a late adolescent in terms of its evolution, it boasts gorgeous aromas of cedar, tobacco leaf, cassis, and lead pencil shavings. The explosive aromas are followed by a fleshy, full-bodied wine that should hit its peak in 5-8 years, and last for 25

Really compellingly sweet and palate-coating for a 2008. The fine-grained tannins contribute to the impression of precision on the explosive, vibrant back end. It is still light gold in color, with an expansive bouquet of new oak, oranges, pineapples, and other tropical fruits. In the mouth, the great richness seems all the more impressive because of the wine's remarkable clarity and definition. There is as much botrytis in the 1986 as in the 1988. Despite the intensity and extract levels, this sweet wine comes across as crisp and relatively light. The 1986 is a stunning example of Climens at its very best. (RP)" (08/1993)

I was completely unprepared for the sheer beauty of the 1990. What a fabulous wine! A burst of gloriously ripe, red fruit exploded from the glass, followed by a never ending array of spices and flowers that melded together seamlessly in an extraordinary display of sheer class. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2005 Domaine Lamarche La Grande Rue Grand Cru (95BH, 94ST, 92WS). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A hint of menthol adds nuance to the mostly highly-spiced red berry fruit nose that is quite reserved if beautifully complex while leading to sweet, delicious, generous and round medium full flavors that are classy and refined, all wrapped in a strikingly persistent and explosive finish. This offers excellent cellar potential and at this early stage the wood, which is normally fairly prominent, is already well integrated but note that this will need every bit of 15 years, perhaps even slightly longer, to arrive at its prime as it's very structured. A really beautiful LGR that showed even a bit better than it had only three weeks earlier as it was given the benefit of an hour's worth of air. (AM)" (04/2008)

1975 d'Yquem, Sauternes
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1975 d'Yquem, Sauternes (98RP, 95WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1975 Château d'Yquem stands as one of the towering successes of that decade and at 40 years of age, it shows no signs of losing any of its prowess. This bottle represented one of the best that I have encountered. Iridescent in color, the bouquet soars from the glass, a pyrotechnic display of quince, Clementine, honey and a touch of aszu, lending it a slight Tokaji-like personality. It is beautifully defined and intense. The palate is pure and detailed with a killer line of acidity, vibrant honeyed fruit and a mellifluous finish that is now fully expressive. It vies with the imperious 1971 as the greatest Yquem of that era. This is simply magnificent. (NM)" (06/2015)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1990 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru "Aux Brulées" (94BH, 93WS, 91RP). Allen Meadows - Burghound: " In much the same fashion as the '93 Brûlées, for years this was a bruiser of a wine and it is only relatively recently that it has become sufficiently civilized to completely enjoy. Sous bois suffused aromas of smoke, spice, bacon and earth lead to rich, seductive, full-bodied, deep and wonderfully complex flavors of considerable power and length. Moreover there is a notably better expression of the underlying terroir than most '90s display, all wrapped in a velvety and still moderately firm and vibrant finish. While this is not an elegant example by the very high standards of this wine, it compensates by its sheer richness, overall sense of depth and generosity. In short, this is a '90 that completely fulfilled the early promise of the vintage plus it's a wine that should continue to hold effortlessly for years to come. I have had the privilege of

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2013 Domaine Francois Lamarche Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru "Malconsorts" ((93-95RP), 91WS, 90BH). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts came across as more surly and backward on the nose when I tasted it at the domaine. The fruit is darker than the La Croix Rameau with blackberry leaf, cranberry, woodland and tree bark aromas: complex but distant. The palate is therefore surprisingly succulent and fleshy on the entry. There is a lovely saline tang at the front of the mouth, commendable weight and real persistence and structure on the finish. Again, this is very elegant and intense, the aftertaste bewilderingly long! (NM)" (12/2014)

1999 Bertrand Ambroise Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Bid on this bottle of 1999 Bertrand Ambroise Clos Vougeot Grand Cru ((91-93BH)). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Typical young Clos de Vougeot with its closed, austere fruit and flavor profile with ripe, almost dusty tannins, rich flavors and grand cru length. There is plenty of character here and no lack of finesse... Bertrand Ambroise concedes that there has been a stylistic evolution in his wines over the last few years. He believes his earlier efforts were too tannic and while admirably concentrated, lacked elegance and grace. In particular, since 1993 he has not used a saignée to concentrate his wines since Bertrand believes its effect is to harden them... Bertrand believes 99 is a potentially great year with explosive fruit, very ripe yet fine tannins and impeccable balance... The Ambroise 99s are a very solid set of wines and at all appellation levels. You'll find good concentration, cleanly extracted fruit and better transparency of terroir than in the past." (01/2001)

The 1998 (a blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 4.5% Cabernet Franc, and 1.5% Petit Verdot) is an outstanding effort. While very Lafite-like (although more supple and forward), it exhibits a dense ruby/purple color in addition to an excellent bouquet of black fruits, smoke, earth, and minerals, supple tannin, an excellent texture, and a long, fine finish." Bid on this 6-half-bottle lot of 1988 Rieussec, Sauternes (375ml) (93RP, 90ST, 90WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1988 remains a very backward wine. Full-bodied and powerful, extremely rich and dense, it may be the least evolved 1988. The nose offers enticing coconut, orange, vanilla, and honeyed scents. The flavors are highly extracted. Bid on this bottle of 1999 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru "Clos des Ducs" (96BH, 93RP, 91ST). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "This stunning Ducster remains almost entirely primary at present though I sense that the nose will begin to turn toward the secondary in the next year or two. There is excellent richness and plenty of supporting structure and minerality to the full-bodied flavors yet the usual precision and focus are present in spades on the mouth coating, serious and still moderately austere finish that delivers explosive length. This is going to be an extremely long-lived wine and while I suspect that it should be approachable and enjoyable around 2017 or so, I doubt that it will be fully ready for at least another 10 to 12 years from now. 2002 Domaine Nicolas Potel Chambertin-Clos de Beze Grand Cru
Bid on this bottle of 2002 Domaine Nicolas Potel Chambertin-Clos de Beze Grand Cru. Allen Meadows of Burghound relates Potel's thoughts on the vintage: "Potel describes the 2002 growing season as essentially 'disastrous until the end of August. We had quite a bit of rain, which encouraged the rot but thankfully, the north wind saved our bacon'. Potel noted one important distinction which was that the maturity was in the fruit, not in the vines which he believes never really finished, which is why the leaves stayed on the vines as long as they did... Potel's wines continue to improve and while I thought that his 2001s were his best to date, these 2002s, when considered as a group are better still."

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This has far more intrigue on the nose than the 2005 with the Cabernet Franc relishing this propitious growing season. Savoury fruits, a touch of fig and earth although perhaps it could just do with a little more harmony. The palate is very elegant with grainy tannins, firm grip with a tinge of espresso become more evident towards the finish. This is just beginning to develop character but it needs another decade. But great potential. Drink now-2020+. (NM)" (05/2008)

Tangy, crystallized red berry flavors offer a penetrating sweetness, but firm acids are currently keeping the wine quite tight. Impeccably balanced grand cru, with powerful extract, powerful structure and terrific grip. (ST)" (03/2001)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2000 Canon-La-Gaffelière, St-Emilion (94RP, 93ST, 93WE, 93WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Performing as I expected, but still several years away from full maturity, this extraordinarily flamboyant, full-bodied, opulent, sexy St. Emilion stood out for its backward structure and youthful personality. A dark plum/garnet hue is followed by a superb bouquet of roasted coffee, kirsch, blackberries, licorice, herbs, and forest floor. Full-bodied, dense, rich, and pure, it is a total hedonistic as well as intellectual turn-on. Enjoy it over the next decade. (RP)" (06/2010)

1990 Pichon-Baron, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1990 Pichon-Baron, Pauillac (97RP, 94WS, 93ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A remarkable vintage for Pichon Longueville Baron, 1990 is one of this estate’s two or three finest wines made in the last 40 years. Still inky/blue/purple-tinged to the rim, it reveals an extraordinary bouquet of charcoal, incense, creme de cassis, blue and black fruits, and a hint of licorice as well as an impressively long finish. While drinkable, its evolution is extremely slow, and I would not be surprised to see it last another two decades or more." (06/2009)

Bid on this magnum of 2000 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac (1.5L) (96JS, 96RP, 95WS, 93ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2000 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is spectacular, and certainly a noteworthy rival to the 1996, 1995, and even the extraordinary 1982... The wine is full-bodied, with extraordinary purity and a tremendous texture. I suspect this wine will be relatively approachable young but evolve effortlessly. This is a dramatic, almost flamboyant style that is not classic Pauillac in one sense, but a classic wine. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2025." (06/2010)

1998 Clos l'Eglise, Pomerol
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1998 Clos l'Eglise, Pomerol (93RP, (89-91ST)). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A classic Pomerol, the 1998 boasts a superb, complex bouquet of mocha fudge, vanilla, black cherries, roasted coffee, smoke, and berries. The dazzlingly explosive aromatic display is followed by a creamy-textured, medium to full-bodied, beautifully-layered wine with no hard edges. A supple texture leads to a finish with notes of caramel and spice that lingers for over 40 seconds. This is a gorgeous, complex Pomerol. (RP)" (04/2001)

Bid on this 3L-bottle of 1996 Pontet-Canet, Pauillac (3L) (92RP, 91ST, 91WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I was shocked by how backward the 1996 Pontet-Canet was on the three occasions I tasted it in January. This wine possesses superb potential, but it appears a decade's worth of patience will be necessary. The color is a saturated dark purple. With coaxing, the wine offers aromas of black currant jam intertwined with minerals, sweet oak, and spice. A full-bodied wine, it possesses layered, concentrated, sweet fruit, with an elevated level of ripe tannin. (RP)" (04/1999)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "An elegant as well as powerful effort, this dense ruby/purple-colored 1998 reveals notes of plums, black raspberries, vanillin, minerals, licorice, and spice. Exceptionally rich with an outstanding texture, this medium to full-bodied wine possesses a distinctive, individualistic style, largely because of its floral, blueberry fruit flavors. Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 2011 Domaine de Montille Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Les Caillerets" ((91-94BH), 94RP, 92ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The aromatics on the Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru les Caillerets 2011 is more austere than Anne-Claude Leflaive’s Clavoillon, but it is beautifully defined with wet limestone and sea cave scents that with aeration become very intense. The palate is crisp and taut with very fine tension. It just loses a little intensity toward the finish, but it possesses a surfeit of freshness and precision. This was one of the best white 2011s Burgundy wines that I tasted during an intensive week of peer group tasting. (NM)" (11/2014)

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Knockout nose combines peach, crushed stone and oatmeal. A step up in sweetness and opulence from the foregoing samples: fat, silky and thick yet conveying an impression of weightlessness. Peach and orange flavors are joined by piquant spices and mounting minerality on the extremely long and thoroughly ripe aftertaste. An impressively complete example of this great site. 1999 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1999 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac (95RP, 94WS, 92ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1999 Lafite Rothschild sports an engraved '1999' on the bottle along with an eclipse to mark that significant historical event of August, 1999. It is a quintessential offering from Lafite Rothschild. This prodigious wine is both elegant and intensely flavored, and almost diaphanous in its layers that unfold with no heaviness. An opaque ruby/purple color is accompanied by a complex bouquet of lead pencil, graphite, cedar, creme de cassis, toast, and vanilla. It is medium-bodied, with extravagant layers of richness yet little weight, and a finish that is all sweetness, ripeness, and harmony. This extraordinary Lafite increasingly appears to be a modern day clone of the majestic 1953. A mere one-third of the crop made it into the grand vin! (RP)" (04/2002)

1989 Margaux, Margaux
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1989 Margaux, Margaux (97WS, 90RP). Wine Spectator: "This is about as alluring as it gets aromatically, with singed alder, juniper, bay and charcoal notes out front, hinting at power but turning beguiling as they flow into the core of steeped red currant, dried currant and black tea. The charcoal note makes an encore, with a lovely twinge of old-school character holding the finish. Always a great debate vis-à-vis the '90, but the slightly darker profile here gives this wine a lovely bit of extra drama. (Web Only—2014)"

James Suckling: "Château Léoville Las Cases St. Julien 1975: This came as a big surprise because I usually associate outstanding bottles of Bordeaux from this vintage with only the Right Bank or Graves. But the 1975 Las Cases is superb. It showed gorgeous aromas of dried berry and tobacco with iodine and shells. Bid on this bottle of 1993 Georges Roumier Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses (96BH). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A high-toned, expressive and highly spiced nose that carries a hint of sandalwood over to the delicious, mouth coating and serious medium plus weight flavors that possess superb detail and ample underlying minerality on the driving, palate staining and impeccably well-balanced finish. This is a truly stunning effort that has arrived at a point where, with 30 minutes of aeration, it could be enjoyed now but I emphasize that there is sufficient structure remaining that it will last for another 30 years, perhaps longer as there is an underlying reserve of material and vivacity that will ensure an exceptionally long life. Of the 1970 Trotanoy, Pomerol,Robert Parker's Wine Advocate writes: "This wine has developed magnificently over the last 4-5 years. More backward, and possibly even more concentrated than the 1970 Petrus (as well as more tannic), this huge, old style, massive, thick, rich wine is crammed with concentrated, chocolaty, berry fruit, with a hint of leather, smoked meat, and licorice. The wine's opaque garnet color reveals no sign of amber. The nose is just beginning to open. The flavors are so concentrated that I am going to go out on a limb and say this may be the most concentrated Trotanoy made in the post-World War II era. I suspect this wine can still be purchased for a relatively good price. Owners should plan on drinking it between 2000-2030. Its full-bodied, velvety textured personality explodes on the palate with copious quantities of jammy, yet well-delineated fruit flavors. 2008 Pascal Marchand Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2008 Pascal Marchand Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru ((93-94RP), 92WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Incorporating grapes from two sources, Marchand’s 2008 Chambertin Clos de Beze exhibits the site-typical scents and flavors of dark cherry, licorice, and rose petal, allied to Latakia tobacco-like smokiness, soy-like savor, and subtle suggestions of humus and peat. Rich and already texturally caressing yet at the same time buoyant, it finishes with palate-staining, mandible-tugging, vibratory
