French Wine

When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its regions, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and occasionally as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a 100 lives. To understand and appreciate French wine, you only need to begin tasting them. Check out some of the top picks that our buyers have tracked down - several of these wines are imported directly from France.

1998 Taittinger "Comtes de Champagne" Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne (1.5L)
Bid on this magnum lot of 1998 Taittinger "Comtes de Champagne" Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne (94WE). 94 points Wine Enthusiast: "A delicious, welcoming, generous wine that also manages to keep the pure, mineral character of Chardonnay. It has a very direct, linear, steely taste. Great acidity plays a part, as do ripe, fruity flavors and fine balance. This wine should develop well, but it’s delicious now." (11/1/2006)

1959 Calon-Ségur, St-Estèphe
Bid on this bottle of 1959 Calon-Ségur, St-Estèphe. Wine Spectator: "Has a fascinating nose, with multidimensional earthy aromas, but it's slightly drying on the palate. Garnet-ruby in color, with more of an amber edge, offering intensely spicy, leafy, gamy and somewhat earthy aromas. Full-bodied, with a quite tannic mouthfeel and a short finish." (10/1990)

2000 Pavie, St-Emilion
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2000 Pavie, St-Emilion (100RP, 96WS, 93ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Just beginning to come around and strut its enormous potential, this wine at age 15 has been evolving like a glacier. The wine has an inky, opaque, plum/purple color and a stunningly rich nose of mulberries, bramble berries, blackberries, licorice and incense as well as touches of toast and graphite. Fabulously concentrated and full-bodied, with a multidimensional mouthfeel, this profound Pavie is in mid-adolescence. It should evolve and continue to drink well for at least another 30-40 years. This is clearly the first compelling effort made by the Perse family. (RP)" (08/2015)

1970 Trotanoy, Pomerol
Bid on this bottle of 1970 Trotanoy, Pomerol (96RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This wine has developed magnificently over the last 4-5 years. More backward, and possibly even more concentrated than the 1970 Petrus (as well as more tannic), this huge, old style, massive, thick, rich wine is crammed with concentrated, chocolaty, berry fruit, with a hint of leather, smoked meat, and licorice. The wine's opaque garnet color reveals no sign of amber. The nose is just beginning to open. The flavors are so concentrated that I am going to go out on a limb and say this may be the most concentrated Trotanoy made in the post-World War II era. I suspect this wine can still be purchased for a relatively good price. Owners should plan on drinking it between 2000-2030. One of the four greatest wines of the vintage, the 1970 Trotanoy is the finest wine made at this estate save for the extraordinary 1961. (RP)" (06/1996)

2001 Domaine J-F Mugnier Musigny Grand Cru
Bid on this bottle of 2001 Domaine J-F Mugnier Musigny Grand Cru (95VN, 94BH). Vinous: "Full medium red. Compellingly fresh, complex nose combines wild raspberry, minerals, smoked meat and mint. Wonderfully fine-grained and sappy, with its red berry, coffee and leather flavors conveying a distinctly youthful character. Boasts a terric spine of firm, integrated acidity and suave tannins and builds slowly and steadily on the rising finish. Great class here. Frédéric Mugnier recalled that he was quite happy with the quality of the 2001 tannins at the beginning and that he loves this vintage. "The wines were always very pretty but now they show more structure," he told me. He added that he would still wait longer to drink this wine "for more complexity and polish."" (04/2017)

1990 Montrose, St-Estèphe
Bid on this bottle of 1990 Montrose, St-Estèphe (100RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the Montrose vertical in London, the 1990 Montrose is a blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc (almost identical to the 1989 Montrose) and picked between 14 September and 3 October. It has a formidable reputation and for years it overshadowed the 1989...It shows approximately the same evolution as the 1989 in bottle, but unsurprisingly showed less bricking in magnum format. The bouquet is cut from a different cloth to the 1989 and attests to that warm vintage: hickory, clove, undergrowth and wild fennel, later garrigue-like scents and terracotta, the latter two more pronounced on the bottle format compared to the youthful magnum. The palate is full-bodied and powerful, yet the balance is perfect, a ballerina-like poise with the structure of the Forth Bridge ... (NM)" (03/2017)

Bid on this 3L-bottle lot of 2005 Pape-Clément, Pessac-Léognan (3L) (99RP, 97VN, 96WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Owned by Bernard Magrez, this great terroir a few miles from Haut Brion and La Mission Haut Brion has produced one of the superstars of the vintage. A blend of 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, Pape Clement’s 2005 has an opaque purple color and smoky barbecue and chocolaty notes intermixed with cassis and blackberries. There is also some underlying minerality in this full-bodied, super-concentrated wine, which has wonderfully sweet, well-integrated tannins. This majestic, multidimensional wines is one of the great, great wines of the vintage. It should drink well for at least another 25 years. (RP)" (06/2015)

1982 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1982 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac (100RP, 98WS, 95ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the monumental wines of the last century is the 1982 Pichon Lalande. Since bottling, it has flirted with perfection, and was a sprinter out of the gate, which gave rise to questions about how quickly it would begin its decline. However, at age 27, it retains all its glossy, rich, flamboyant cassis fruit, chocolaty, berry jam-like notes, and plenty of earthy, foresty flavors. This is a full-bodied, extravagantly rich Pichon Lalande seemingly devoid of acidity and tannin, but the wine is incredibly well-balanced and pure. It is an amazing effort! (RP)" (06/2009)

1982 Margaux, Margaux
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1982 Margaux, Margaux (97JS, 97RP, 97VN, 92WS, 90ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1982 Chateau Margaux is a wine that I have tasted many times, constantly contrasted against the 1983 to see which is better. Frankly I found that it depends on the bottle, although maybe the 1983 edges it. But it is important to assess the 1982 on its own individual merits because it is a superb First Growth. This was a great bottle: fragrant and beautifully defined on the nose that on this occasion offered a more conspicuous graphite scent, which lent it a Pauillac-like personality. Allowing the wine to open and aerate, the traits one associates with the property emerge—wilted violets and rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and mineral-laden, that suggestion of candied orange peel on the entry segueing into layers of pure red and black fruit. There is always something effortless about this Chateau Margaux and the pixelation on the finish is up there with th

Bid on this 3-magnum lot of 1996 A.R. Lenoble Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne (1.5L) (92WS, 91ST). Wine Spectator: "This is round for the vintage, yet with a racy structure underneath. Finishes with excellent spicy persistence. I tasted this wine's two components, one from red soil and the other from white, as well as this approximation of the final blend." (04/2006)

Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A completely different nose of spicy black pinot and cherry fruit aromas cut with underbrush and a subtle sauvage quality merges into velvety, smooth and round flavors that possess a certain lushness about them yet this finishes with a decided firmness. I quite like this as it's understated, pure and very well balanced and while it's not overly complex at the moment, this may come with time in bottle as the underlying material to do so is clearly here. There is a really lovely texture to the precise and minerally middle weight flavors that possess outstanding depth and length on the dusty but well-balanced finale. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2005 Domaine des Varoilles Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Clos des Varoilles" (93BH). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "The expressive and lightly wooded nose displays some wisps of secondary development on the pomegranate, spice, earth and sauvage hints. The dense, serious and intense medium weight plus flavors possess plenty of palate coating dry extract along with excellent power on the still firmly tannic and moderately austere finish. This is a big and robust wine that's going to require at least another decade before it reaches its full maturity." (11/2015)

2005 Domaine de Montille Pommard 1er Cru "Les Pézerolles"
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2005 Domaine de Montille Pommard 1er Cru "Les Pézerolles" ((92-93RP), 92ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "De Montille’s 2005 Pommard Pezerolles displays hints of herbs and flowers, then pungent cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, metal shavings and crushed stone. Ripe spiced raspberry and cassis with soy-like savor make for an expansive rich display on the palate, where fine tannins are appropriately reined-in. This finishes with real thrust, and intense spice and mineral adjuncts to its ripe fruit. Rather than the clarity and elegance of the Grands Epenots, one gets a more opaque sense of richness here and a more obvious sense of density. This appellation – representing one of, if not the largest surface area of the estate – has been on a roll of late, and that is not by accident. De Montille reasserted control in 1999 over management of the vines and has been working to bring out a quality potential that need not take a back seat to Grands Epenots or Rugiens. (

Allen Meadows - Burghound: "* Outstanding Top Value* This is at once more elegant and more serious with earthy and very pretty red berry fruit aromas introducing very rich, sweet and relatively big-boned flavors that possess fine depth of material and plenty of tannin-buffering sap on the dense but fine finish. This is a high quality villages from perhaps the most gifted site in Pommard for its level. Recommended. Drink: 2013+" (01/2007)

Allen Meadows - Burghound: "*Sweet Spot Outstanding* (from a parcel measuring .37 ha that was planted in 1947; also aged in 50% new wood) Here the wood treatment is a good deal less evident with an equally fresh and bright nose that offers a bit more breadth as well as even more elegance that continues to the pure, refined, textured and detailed flavors that also brim with minerality on the racy and transparent finish. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2005 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Volnay 1er Cru "Santenots-du-Milieu" (95RP, 94BH, 94ST, 94VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Having tasted this three or four times in the past, I probably have under-rated this wine because it is such a long-term proposition. The 2005 Volnay Santenot has a dense, almost impenetrable bouquet that demands considerable aeration to unveil its multi-layered aromatic profile of creme de cassis, raspberry, blackberry and a veneer of new oak that needs several more years to be fully absorbed (indeed, it feels like more than the one-third new oak that Dominique uses). The palate is full-bodied with a sweet, succulent entry. It is beautifully balanced, vivacious and sensual with a dab of alcohol on the finish. It is far too young to broach at the moment, but it will develop with style over the next three decades. Drink 2018-2035. Tasted September 2013. (NM)" (12/2013)

Of the 2005 Domaine Henri Boillot Volnay 1er Cru "Les Chevrets",Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar writes: "Bright red-ruby. Captivating dark raspberry and floral aromas. Dense yet delicate and lacy, with lovely juicy acidity giving the peppery red fruit flavors terrific energy and thrust for the year. A much more feminine style of Volnay than the Fremiets or Caillerets. Finishes pure, peppery, brisk and very long, with lovely lingering perfume. (ST)" (03/2008)

2005 Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard Volnay 1er Cru "Clos des Chênes"
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2005 Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard Volnay 1er Cru "Clos des Chênes" (92BH). Allen Meadows - Burghound: " The ripe and dense nose of earthy and softly spicy dark pinot fruit aromas is beginning to display some secondary development. Consistent with the nose there is some secondary development evident on the big-bodied, bold and solidly well-concentrated flavors that possess fine complexity on the impressively long and delicious finale. The supporting tannins are largely but not completely resolved and I would describe this as having reached the front edge of its peak drinkability. That said it seems clear that the '05 Clos des Chênes should be capable of holding at this level for many years to come. In short, this is a really lovely effort that has fulfilled all of the promise that I originally saw. Drink: Now+" (05/2015)

Of the 2005 Domaine Dupont-Tisserandot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Cazetiers",Allen Meadows - Burghound writes: "A very ripe extract of black pinot fruit nose liberally laced with cassis and warm earth nuances introduces rich, full and mouth coating flavors that are equally ripe, powerful, textured and explosive on the hugely long finish. Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Remarkably this has changed relatively little since my initial in-bottle review amost 10 years ago as the ripe raspberry liqueur-like nose evidences hints of spice, violets, earth and underbrush. The vibrant, pure, round and naturally sweet medium-bodied flavors possess excellent intensity on the precise, powerful and mineral-driven finish. There is a beautiful tension to this wine and while there is a serious tannic backbone, this seems supple on the mid-palate because the structure is so well-buffered. This is still very much on the way up and should easily see its 50th birthday (and many more) in superb condition. As such I would strongly advise letting this beauty continue to slumber." Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1985 J.L. Chave Hermitage (91RP, 91ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Chave produced the best red Hermitage of this vintage. Yet for Chave 1985 was not a year he cares to remember. Holding back the tears, he sadly states that his beloved mother, as well as his faithful sidekick, his dog, passed away that year. A sentimentalist, Chave is likely to put little of this vintage into the huge reservoir of old vintages that his family has faithfully cellared throughout this century. His 1985 avoided the oversupple style of some of the other reds of this vintage. The wine's deep ruby color exhibits some lightening at the edge. The intense fragrance of smoked meat, cassis, and Provencal olives is followed by a rich, full-bodied, velvety-textured wine that is just beginning to reach its apogee. (RP)" (01/1997)

Bid on this bottle of 2009 DRC Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche Grand Cru (98BH, 97RP, 97WS, 96ST). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "This ripe effort really has not changed much since I last reviewed it from bottle in 2012 save for the fact that it is perhaps a bit less imposing than many vintages of La Tâche at the same very early stage. But overall I simply repeat my original review as it is still accurate: A discreet but incredibly complex nose features notes of spicy, pure and relatively high-toned fruit that is laced with plenty of rose petal and violet hints. There is excellent energy and freshness to the lacy and stunningly precise broad-scaled flavors that build in intensity from the densely concentrated mid-palate to the explosive and mouth coating finish that seemingly goes on without end. This is a big LT with ample muscle and very firm but not aggressive structure along with superb depth of underlying material and positively mind-blowing length. But the real genius of this w

1973 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1973 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac. Chris Kissack's TheWineDoctor.com: "Phillippe Rothschild called it '...the monstrous injustice' of Mouton's second growth status. For years the labels stated simply 'Premier ne puis, second ne daigne, Mouton suis,' or 'First I cannot be, second I do not deign to be, I am Mouton'. It was clear from the great vintages produced in the 1860s and 1870s that the 1855 classification was already outdated, and that change was long overdue. But no such review of this classification will ever take place, and it was only thanks to the tireless campaigning of Philippe that Jacques Chirac, then Minister of Agriculture, passed a decree conferring the status of first growth upon Mouton-Rothschild in 1973. At last the wrong had been righted, and from then on Mouton's labels bore a new inscription, 'Premier je suis, second je fus. Mouton ne change,' or 'First I am, second I was. Mouton does not change'."

Bid on this 2-magnum lot of 2007 Hudelot Noellat Vosne Romanee 'Aux Malconsorts" (1.5L). Allen Meadows - Burghound: " *Outstanding* A more discreet and certainly more restrained spicy black fruit nose trimmed in a gentle touch of wood introduces robust, serious and noticeably more concentrated medium full flavors that possess good depth of material and ripe phenolics and while this is perhaps a bit less powerful than it usually is, it trades this for a bit more elegance. I wouldn't call this a classic Malconsorts as it's more refined than it typically is but that certainly is no knock given the style of the vintage." (01/2009)

Bid on this bottle of 2001 J-F Mugnier Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru "Les Amoureuses" (93BH, (91-93RP), 93ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Mugnier’s ruby-colored 2001 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses is a winner! Its gorgeous aromatics display violet-laced blueberries and spices. On the palate, this plush, oily-textured, medium-bodied wine bursts with sweet red cherries and rose blossoms. A seductive effort, it is seamless, loaded with fruit, and supple. Here, too, the flavors are broad and expansive, but there is a little more nuance, detail and mineral cut, all of which help convey energy and drive allied to richness. Constantly changing in the glass, the Valmur takes on more feminine shades of nuance with air. (AG)" (08/2013)

1975 Trotanoy, Pomerol
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1975 Trotanoy, Pomerol (97RP, 96VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1975 Trotanoy can be an extraordinary wine on the right day. This was the right day. Served blind from a magnum, unaware of its age, I was struck by the depth of its color. The bouquet is almost ineffably complex, a mixture of red and black fruit, black truffle (indicating its Pomerol origins), sage and dried rose petals. It was the delineation and sheer confidence of the aromatics that leaves you spellbound. The palate is beautifully structured, very Left Bank in style thanks to its tertiary nature, yet bridled with disarming tension and energy from start to finish. There is a twist of sour cherry right on the aftertaste, completing a stunning Trotanoy. I very much doubt I will ever encounter an example of this outstanding Pomerol as good as this again. Tasted October 2016. (NM)" (02/2017)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A sensational effort, and one of the two finest Clinets made before the 2008, this prodigious wine made by the late Jean-Michel Arcaute has always been a sprinter out of the gate. Even at age 19, it continues to strut its stuff. A dense blue/garnet/purple hue exhibits slight lightening at the edge, and the gorgeous nose offers up aromas of sweet blueberries, licorice, smoke, acacia flowers, and camphor. Full-bodied with silky tannins, low acidity, and terrific purity, this 1990 has hit its plateau of full maturity where it should remain for another decade. (RP)" (06/2009)

1982 Latour, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1982 Latour, Pauillac (100RP, 100VN, 98JS, 98WS, 97ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Always somewhat atypical, the 1982 Latour has been the most opulent, flamboyant, and precocious of the northern Medocs, especially the St.-Juliens, Pauillacs, and St.-Estephes. It hasn't changed much over the last 10-15 years, revealing sweet tannins as well as extraordinarily decadent, even extravagant levels of fruit, glycerin, and body. It is an amazing wine, and on several occasions, I have actually picked it as a right bank Pomerol because of the lushness and succulence of the cedary, blackberry, black currant fruit. This vintage has always tasted great, even in its youth, and revealed a precociousness that one does not associate with this Chateau. However, the 1982 is still evolving at a glacial pace. The concentration remains remarkable, and the wine is a full-bodied, exuberant, rich, classic Pauillac in its aromatic and flavor profiles ... (RP)" (06/2009)

James Suckling: "This was yet another wine I drunk with wine collector friends in Bangkok – the city is truly buzzing when it comes to wine and when you know where to look! On the nose, there were intense aromas of iron, pot iron and dried fruits, as well as hints of nuts and wet earth. On the palate, it showed a gorgeous texture of ripe tannins and lots of spicy and currant fruit character. A full-bodied, very soft and silky Bordeaux with lots of flavors and a superb finish. Just right now – indeed it seems to be getting younger with age, not older! Decant an hour before. I think it's better than the legendary 1990. It's certainly cleaner and more consistent quality." This is not the most elegant of examples but the flavor authority and purity of expression are flat out terrific. One to buy. The charcoal note makes an encore, with a lovely twinge of old-school character holding the finish. There is good punch, detail and intensity to the round, delicious and equally complex flavors that are on the lighter side but not dilute, all wrapped in a solidly persistent finish that displays relatively little of the typical '96 tanginess. Finishes with lovely length and vinosity, the tannins substantial but arriving late. (ST)" (03/2007)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2010 Domaine François Carillon Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Les Combettes" (91RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Readers looking for a Carillon 2010 to drink young should check out the 2010 Puligny-Montrachet Les Combettes. It is one of the more immediate wines in this lineup. The textural finesse that is the hallmark of the 2010s in this cellar is present, but I don’t find quite the complexity or pure pedigree of the best wines here. The direct, powerful finish is one of many things that make the Combettes delicious right now. Anticipated maturity: 2012+. (AG)" (08/2012)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2005 Domaine de Montille Volnay 1er Cru "Champans" (93BH, (91-92RP), (89-92ST)). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "An expressive, elegant and high-toned red pinot fruit nose that is still quite primary is nuanced by floral, spice, earth and discreet game hints. There is lovely detail to the mineral-suffused middle weight flavors that have the classic Champans reserve and touch of austerity on the wonderfully long finish. This will require time as the tannins are fine but dense.. Lovely juice but clearly meant for the patient." (06/2015)

The equally cool mineral-infused flavors are serious and moderately structured on the balanced and firm finish. Lovely." (Burghound, 01/08)

This is not an elegant wine but the sheer depth of extract is incredibly impressive as is the superb phenolic ripeness and there is a velvety natural sweetness that completely buffers the considerable tannic spine. 2005 Silvie Esmonin Volnay 1er Cru "Santenots"
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2005 Silvie Esmonin Volnay 1er Cru "Santenots". From Allen Meadows of Burghound: "With respect to the 2005 vintage, Esmonin told me that it 'was a super clean harvest with virtually no sorting at all. There was a lot of millerandage (tiny berries with very high solid to juice ratios) and the normal berries had very thick skins too which means that there is a real sense of concentration to the wines even though we had relatively good yields. For me, this was the cherry on the cake as too often when we have great quality, yields are small. I waited until September 23rd to begin picking and as such, sugars were very good and I chaptalized nothing yet acidities are ideal. I used a very high proportion of stems (from 0 to 100% with an average of over 50%) and even what I did destem was not crushed. The vinfications were easy as the color extraction happened early and I finally racked off after 17 days. Because of the very cold 2005/2006 winter, the cellar got so

I appreciate the purity and floral nature of Mugneret-Gibourg’s Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Chaignots, which is well defined and seems to blossom on the glass. It feels natural and nicely focused, plenty of mulberry and raspberry fruit emerging as it opens. The flavors are big, rich, refined, classy, penetrating and superbly powerful yet everything is in perfect balance and there is more than sufficient sève to balance off the still considerable tannins. Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1995 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac (95JS, 95RP, 95VN, 94WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Bottled in June, 1997, this profound Mouton is more accessible than the more muscular 1996. A blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 19% Merlot, it reveals an opaque purple color, and reluctant aromas of cassis, truffles, coffee, licorice, and spice. In the mouth, the wine is 'great stuff,' with superb density, a full-bodied personality, rich mid-palate, and a layered, profound finish that lasts for 40+ seconds. There is outstanding purity and high tannin, but my instincts suggest this wine is lower in acidity and slightly fleshier than the brawnier, bigger 1996. Both are great efforts from Mouton-Rothschild. (RP)" (02/1998)

It offers everything you desire from this First Growth. It is blessed with breathtaking delineation and freshness on the nose, understated at first and then blossoming with mineral-infused black fruit, hints of blueberry, crushed stone and violet. The palate is perfectly balanced with filigree tannin, perfect acidity, a wine where everything seems to be in its right place. Blackberry, crushed stone at the front of the mouth, just a touch of spice towards the finish that shows supreme control. This is a Margaux that seems to light up the senses. It was outstanding in its youth...something that has not changed one bit over the intervening two decades. This may well turn out to be the Left Bank pinnacle of the 1990s. Tasted Ju

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1999 Domaine Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru "Ruchottes" (93BH, 93ST, 92WS). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Knockout sweet nose of crystallized lime peel and wild flowers. Very full and deep; a superripe wine whose strong but harmonious acidity gives it finesse and near-perfect balance. Very young but not at all aggressive, and already compellingly aromatic in the mouth. Finishes with subtle, palate-staining persistence. A great premier cru, able to be enjoyed now but likely to gain in complexity over the next decade in bottle. (ST)" (09/2001)

2000 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 2000 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac (97RP, 96WS, 95JS, 95WE, 94ST, 92W&S). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Beginning to open magnificently, the still dense purple-colored 2000 reveals a blossoming bouquet of blackberries, cassis, graphite and pen ink. Full-bodied with velvety tannins that have resolved themselves beautifully over the last eleven years, this wine is still an adolescent, but it exhibits admirable purity, texture, mouthfeel and power combined with elegance. One of the all-time great examples of Lynch Bages, the 2000 is just beginning to drink well yet promises to last for another 20-25+ years. (RP)" (08/2011)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2005 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru "Taillepieds" ((92-95BH), (93-94RP), 91ST, 91WS). Allen Meadows - Burghound: " *Don't miss! Outstanding* A strikingly pure nose of cassis, violets and blueberries gracefully gives way to rich, full, sweet and mineral-infused middle weight flavors that have cut-like-a-knife delineation as well as a very firm tannic spine that will also see this through well past its 25th birthday. While the Champans presently has a bit more flesh around the structure, this is a classic Taillepieds built on its minerality and is best cellared by those blessed with ample patience as this is the most backward wine in the range today." Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2005 Domaine Bouchard Père et Fils Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru (95BH, 95ST). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Pungent stone fruits, cold steel, marzipan and charred oak on the nose. Large-scaled, tactile and quite powerful, with captivating, utterly pure flavors of pineapple, wet stone and minerals. Wonderfully sweet and smooth on the back end, with a lovely light touch, but the dusty, tactile aftertaste is stony and uncompromising. I'd forget about this extremely backward wine for a good decade." (09/2007)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2005 Dominique Laurent Volnay 1er Cru "Santenots Vieilles Vignes" ((90-92RP), (89-91ST)). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A 2005 Volnay Santenots Vieilles Vignes offers high-toned aromas of cherry distillate and cherry pits, marrowy meatiness and imposing breadth on the palate, and a beautiful penetration of dark fruits, savory meatiness, and chalky, stony minerality in the finish. This displays considerable subtlety of flavor and a refined density of tannins that doesn’t weigh it down but suggests the right structure is present for at least twelve or fifteen years of fascinating development. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2005 Domaine Ramonet Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Champs Canet" (90BH, 90ST). 90 points Allen Meadows: " A gentle touch of wood frames floral and very ripe orchard fruit aromas that include peach and apricot where these fruit characters continue onto the rich, full and notably sweet flavors that are nicely complex and deliver real breadth on the long finish where the wood resurfaces. This is surprisingly forward by the standards of this wine and already accessible." (Oct 01, 2007) 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Pale straw. Musky aromas of stone fruits and nut oil show good aromatic lift. Rich and broad, but with a weightless quality. The rich, broad flavors of peach, minerals, spices and mint remain classically dry, and the finish is dusty, chewy and long. Very Puligny-Montrachet."

A bit tannic and marked by toasty barrels in the finish, this might turn out to taste overdone in its sweetness for some tastes, but certainly there is ample mineral complexity. (DS)" (06/2007)

Bid on this bottle of 2002 Ruinart "Dom Ruinart" Brut Rosé Champagne (96VN, 95JS, 95ST, 95W&S, 94WE, 94WS). Vinous: "A mysterious, beguiling beauty, the 2002 Dom Ruinart Rosé boasts fabulous intensity and pure resonance. Tangerine, exotic spices, mint, crushed rose petals and sweet red berries blossom in the glass. Still, my impression is that the 2002 is holding back much of its ultimate potential, as it remains tight and much less expressive than so many other wines of the year. There is more muscle and punch here and this is very Gevrey in character and style. Very solid quality and also recommended." (01/2007)

2003 M. Chapoutier "De l'Orée" Ermitage Blanc
Bid on this bottle of 2003 M. Chapoutier "De l'Orée" Ermitage Blanc (99RP, 95WS, 93ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Nearly perfect, one of the most prodigious dry white wines I have ever tasted is the 2003 Ermitage Cuvee de l’Oree. A 669-case cuvee fashioned from yields of 10 hectoliters per hectare, it offers aromas and flavors beyond anything I have previously tasted in a dry white. It tastes like a liqueur of licorice intermixed with a liqueur of honeysuckle, quince, and rocks. Opulent, viscous, and full-bodied, at first glance it is seemingly fragile and over the top, but it boasts extraordinary freshness and liveliness as well as monster concentration and a finish that lasts over 60 seconds. I suspect it will drink beautifully for 3-4 years, then go into a funky stage, and re-emerge two decades later. It may be a 100-year wine ... but who knows? Without question, it is a tour de force in winemaking. (RP)" (02/2006)

1970 Latour, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1970 Latour, Pauillac (96RP, 94JS, 91WS, 90ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at dinner at Domaine de Chevalier. The Latour ’70 can be such a variable beast. This is certainly one of the better, more representative bottles. Deep garnet in colour, nice limpidity in the glass. It has a beautiful nose that to be honest, sweeps aside the respectable Domaine de Chevalier ’70 poured alongside, like a lord dismissing his servant with a swish of his hand. Graphite, wild black fruit, freshly rolled tobacco and a faint hint of truffle. The palate is medium-bodied and after forty years, still quite austere but the balance is nailed. Masculine and foursquare, a Latour with a lot of horsepower…but not necessarily revving in top gear…at least not after four decades. Lovely cedar and mint on the long, long finish. Wonderful. I do not thing this wine will get any better, but a divine vinous experience now. Drink now. Tasted April 2010. (NM)" (11/2010)

2003 Gérard Raphet Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2003 Gérard Raphet Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru (96RP, 92ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Fashioned from a parcel located in the heart of its grand cru (mostly from 25-year old vines though Raphet asserts that 'there are still some very old ones'), the 2003 Charmes-Chambertin Cuvee Unique explodes with red fruit aromas. Sappy, bursting with red cherries, this is a sensual wine made for hedonists. Medium to full-bodied, deep, and concentrated, it has serious depth of fruit, loads of smile-inducing spices and an exceptionally long, supple finish filled with superbly ripened tannin. Drink it over the next 11-14 years (incidentally, I served the 1996 at this year’s International Pinot Noir Celebration’s salmon bake in Oregon and it was terrific, wowing all who drank it.) The superlong, racy finish is carried by the riveting acidity. This still needs some cellaring.--1998 Châteauneuf-du-Pape retrospective. Best from 2008 through 2027. (JM)" (09/2007)

The 1999s which were given fabulous ratings from barrel, were not tasted from bottle. However, given part experience with bottled Tardieu-Laurent wines, they are undoutedly as good as I predicted from cask. They are not racked until bottling, produced with minimal levels of SO2, and bottled with neither fining nor filtration. (RP)" (04/2002)

1966 Beychevelle, St-Julien
Bid on this bottle of 1966 Beychevelle, St-Julien (93JG). John Gilman: "Beychevelle in this era has to be one of the great unsung stars of the Médoc, and the 1966 is certainly one of the prettiest and most stunning bottles that I have tasted from this lovely château. The nose on the ’66 Beychevelle absolutely soars from the glass in a brilliant mélange of black berries, raspberries, a classic touch of Beychevelle meatiness, anise, black truffles, a whiff of mint leaf, a lovely base of earth and a pungent topnote of violet. On the palate the wine is medium-full, elegant and refined, with lovely intensity of flavor, flawless balance, and a very long, meltingly tannic, utterly refined and bouncy finish. This is one of the great sleepers still to be found in the mature claret market. A hauntingly beautiful bottle of wine cut in the Palmer mold, or more correctly, a classic Beychevelle. Honeyed melon and jammy apricot aromas soar from the glass of this fleshy, full-bodied, fat, chewy 2003 white. Of the 1986 Rieussec, Sauternes, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate writes: "Tasted at Lafite-Rothschild, the 1986 Rieussec put in a supremely confident performance and in fact, looked more youthful than the 1996. It has a focused and energetic bouquet with scents of dried honey, lychee and slightly resinous, almost Azsu-like aromas. After three decades you have to admire the undimmed energy conveyed by this Rieussec. The palate is fresh and lively, with crisp acidity, very energetic with hints of toffee apple and quince infusing the honeyed fruit. I prefer this to the 1996: there is more animation and tension from start to finish, impressive length and a spicy aftertaste. This is simply superb and begs the question: Is this actually improving in bottle? I attach a plus-sign to my score just in case! Tasted July 2016. (NM)"

Allen Meadows - Burghound: "*Outstanding* This is ripe yet quite cool and airy with its ultra-pure blend of red currant, plum and violet aromas. There is plenty of pungent Gevrey style earth on the seductive and strikingly refined medium-bodied flavors that are also supported by impressive mature tannins that are pushed to the background by the copious amount of dry extract. I very much like the delivery as the tannins are quite finely grained though dense and the overall sense of harmony is entirely beguiling. Drink: 2022+" (01/2012)

Of the 1998 Roger Sabon "Le Secret de Sabon" Châteauneuf-du-Pape,Robert Parker's Wine Advocate writes: "Shockingly good, the 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape le Secret du Sabon tastes like a hypothetical blend of the 2007 and the 2001. Powerful, massive, concentrated and beautifully ripe, it offers notions of kirsch, currants, peppered meats, Asian spice and licorice in its seamless, yet voluptuous and hedonistic personality. It's a crazy good bottle of wine that could be considered over-the-top by some, but who cares when it's this good? If I had bottles, I'd line them up for drinking as you don't want to miss this beauty while it's drinking at point.

2003 Margaux, Margaux
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2003 Margaux, Margaux (98RP, 97JS, 96ST, 96WE, 95WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This was the finest performance by this wine that I have seen since it was released. I did not expect the 2003 Chateau Margaux to show this well in a vintage where the southern part of the Medoc was clearly less impressive than the north. However, it is a beautiful, dark plum/purple-tinged effort with sensational aromatics, a full-bodied mouthfeel, and a youthfulness, precision and freshness that belie what one generally associates with this vintage. It can be drunk now and over the next 15-20 years. Kudos to Chateau Margaux. (RP)" (08/2014)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2005 Joseph Drouhin Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Clos de la Garenne" (92BH, 91WS). Allen Meadows - Burghound: " A ripe but quite fresh mix of both white and yellow orchard fruit that evidences a top note of rose petal complements to perfection the rich, full-bodied and relatively powerful yet refined middle weight flavors that possess an opulent mid-palate, all wrapped in a palate staining and seductively textured finish. This is a very stylish '05 with plenty of palate coating dry extract that imparts a suave mouth feel yet there is enough supporting acidity such that this remains light on the palate. Lovely juice that has just now hit its peak though it should easily hold at this level for another decade, perhaps longer." (04/2012)

1986 Climens, Barsac
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1986 Climens, Barsac (96RP, 94WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A totally compelling Climens and to my mind, every bit as good as the 1988, the 1986 is probably the best Climens made since their spectacular 1971. It is still light gold in color, with an expansive bouquet of new oak, oranges, pineapples, and other tropical fruits. In the mouth, the great richness seems all the more impressive because of the wine's remarkable clarity and definition. There is as much botrytis in the 1986 as in the 1988. Despite the intensity and extract levels, this sweet wine comes across as crisp and relatively light. The 1986 is a stunning example of Climens at its very best. (RP)" (08/1993)

2008 Domaine Louis Jadot Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2008 Domaine Louis Jadot Bonnes Mares Grand Cru ((92-95ST), (92-95WS), 94BH). 92-95 points Stephen Tanzer: "(from calcaire-rich soil on the Chambolle side of the cru) Deep ruby-red. Black cherry and crushed stone on the nose; in a slightly oxidative phase. Then dense, ripe and highly concentrated, with a powerful chewy texture and soil-driven flavors of wild herbs and sexy brown spices. The very sweet, long finish displays a chocolatey ripeness. In an awkward stage of its evolution today, but it's hard to imagine that this won't be a standout." (Mar/Apr 2010) 92-95 points from the Wine Spectator's Bruce Sanderson: "Jadot's Bonnes Mares comes from the Chambolle side, which consists of white soil rather than the red soil found in the northern Morey sector. It was complex and powerful, showing raspberry and cherry flavors followed by a long, chalky finish (92-95, non-blind)." (Decanted, 03/10).

The gorgeously long finish is driven by old-school tannins, with the smoldering edge going on and on. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A beauty, the opaque dense purple-colored 1995 exhibits jammy cassis, vanillin, and minerals in its fragrant but still youthful aromatics. Medium to full-bodied, with exceptional purity, superb concentration, and a long, intense, ripe, 40-second finish, this is a magnificent example of Latour. As the wine sat in the glass, scents of roasted espresso and toasty new oak emerged. This classic will require considerable cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2050. (RP)" (06/2000)

This is the complete package with a textured and palate staining finish as the level of dry extract here is most impressive. 1995 Haut-Brion, Pessac-Léognan
Bid on this bottle of 1995 Haut-Brion, Pessac-Léognan (96RP, 95WS, 93ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "It is fun to go back and forth between the 1995 and 1996, two superb vintages for Haut-Brion. The 1995 seems to have sweeter tannin and a bit more fat and seamlessness when compared to the more structured and muscular 1996. Certainly 1995 was a vintage that the brilliant administrator Jean Delmas handled flawlessly. The result is a deep ruby/purple-colored wine with a tight but promising nose of burning wood embers intermixed with vanilla, spice box, earth, mineral, sweet cherry, black currant, plum-like fruit, medium to full body, a high level of ripe but sweet tannin, and a finish that goes on for a good 40-45 seconds. 2003 La Vieille Cure, Fronsac
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2003 La Vieille Cure, Fronsac (92RP, 90WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The following sleeper of the vintage strongly suggests that La Vieille Cure is becoming one of Fronsac’s two or three finest estates. The finest wine yet made at La Vieille Cure, the 2003 should be on the shopping lists of consumers seeking tremendous quality/price rapport. Its dense ruby/purple color is followed by sweet aromas of scorched earth, black raspberries, creme de cassis, and notions of cherries, smoke, and crushed rocks. This big, full-bodied, dense, captivating wine is structured as well as exceptionally long. (RP)" (04/2006)

The Chambertin Clos de Bèze 2011 from Bruno Clair has a very succinct bouquet with red cherries, crushed strawberry and a deft touch of bergamot that is detailed and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent, ripe tannins and very well-judged acidity that keeps the whole thing tense and poised. Suave and supple in texture, communicating a very fine-grained quality to its concentrated flavors of red berries, cocoa powder and butter. Harvested at 32 hectoliters per hectare, the medium to dark ruby-colored 2002 Nuits-St.-Georges Les St.-Georges sports a big, plummy nose of black cherries and spices. This expansive wine is silky, rich, very generously flavored, long, and full bodied on the palate. It is fully mature, but there is little chance of this wine falling apart for at least another decade. I have high hopes that the 1982, 1983, and 1986 will ultimately surpass this vintage of Margaux. 2004 Domaine Louis Jadot Musigny Grand Cru
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2004 Domaine Louis Jadot Musigny Grand Cru ((92-95BH), (91-94ST)). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "*** Don't Miss! *** As good as the Bonnes Mares is, it's immediately clear that there's another dimension present as this is at once more elegant, more complex and classier as well. An explosive nose of black Pinot fruit and penetrating spice notes lead to notably rich and ripe flavors that exude ample mid-palate extract and while the tannins are quite firm, they are also quite fine. This should prove to be one of the vintage's longer lived examples and it could surprise to the upside as the underlying material is outstanding. John Gilman: "Louis-Michel Liger-Belair’s 2007 La Romanée is one of the wines of the vintage and is showing stunning aromatic and flavor complexity at age seven, but it is still emphatically a young wine and more patience will be very richly rewarded! The absolutely brilliant bouquet delivers an celestial blend of raspberries, a touch of blood orange, red plums, cinnamon, incipient notes of duck, a kaleidoscopic base of soil tones, woodsmoke and cedar. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very light on its feet, with exquisite intensity of flavor, great complexity, a sappy core of fruit, great soil signature and great focus and grip on the tangy and modestly tannic finish. This wine is already very accessible and hard not to drink, but it has not yet developed its secondary layers of complexity and will be even better in another three or four years. A brilliant 2007! Impressively concentrated and voluminous; quite large-scaled, even powerful for the vintage, but fresh and utterly round. Firm acidity gives the wine great inner-mouth perfume and lift. Strong, lingering fruit outlasts the substantial chewy tannins. (ST)" (03/2002)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2007 Domaine de Saint Prefert Collection "Charles Giraud" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (100RP, 98WS, 95ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The utterly profound 2007 Châteauneuf du Pape Collection Charles Giraud (60% Grenache and 40% Mourvèdre) offers up a smorgasbord of roasted meats, black currants, smoked garrigue, graphite and licorice. Utterly perfect on the palate, with a massive, broad, expansive texture that just won’t quit, it has a stacked mid-palate, loads of sweet fruit and a heavenly finish. Chateauneuf du Pape doesn’t get any better! (JD)" (02/2017)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A glorious wine from Domaine de Chevalier, this 2005 reveals notes of graphite, subtle charcoal, blackberry and blackcurrant fruit, a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, silky tannins, and a long, multi-dimensional finish. This is a killer effort from the Bernard family, who own this famous terroir in Pessac-Léognan. Drink it over the next 20-30 years. (RP)" (06/2015)

1985 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1985 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac (93RP, 90ST, 90WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the château, the 1985 Lafite-Rothschild was the best example of this wine that I have tasted a dozen or so times. It has a beautiful nose that is just classic Lafite. It is still fresh yet understated, stately even, with tobacco and cedar-tinged red berry fruit. It is not a powerful bouquet, but there is something...magnetic about it. The palate is still youthful with fine tannin, like the nose, understated yet very well balanced. The acidity here is perfectly judged with an almost nonchalant finish. You almost miss its virtues - it is just so self-effacing and insouciant. Just a really lovely Lafite-Rothschild at the peak of its powers. Tasted March 2016. (NM)" (07/2016)

Bid on this 3-magnum lot of 2013 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin "Vieilles Vignes" (1.5L) ((91-93RP), (89-92BH)). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes, the oldest vines planted back in 1929, has a crisp, slightly leafy bouquet with a light marine influence developing in the glass. The palate is very well balanced with fine tannins, crisp acidity and plenty of dark berry fruit toward the piquant finish. Don't overlook this offering from Jean-Marie Fourrier, because it ranks easily alongside his Premier Crus. (NM)" (12/2014)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2004 Domaine Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru "Montée de Tonnerre" ((90-91RP), 91ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Resin, spices, and menthol notes can be detected in the aromatic profile of the 2004 Chablis Montee de Tonnerre. A sappy, fleshy wine, it offers a light to medium-bodied character filled with salt, sea shells, slate, and minerals. (PR)" (06/2006)

1995 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac (1.5L)
Bid on this 2-magnum lot of 1995 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac (1.5L) (95JS, 95RP, 95ST, 94WS). In the mouth, the wine is "great stuff," with superb density, a full-bodied personality, rich mid-palate, and a layered, profound finish that lasts for 40+ seconds. There is outstanding purity and high tannin, but my instincts suggest this wine is lower in acidity and slightly fleshier than the brawnier, bigger 1996. Both are great efforts from Mouton-Rothschild. (RP)" (02/1998)

Reticent aromas of raspberry, strawberry and crushed stone. Rounder and sweeter than the village wine, with sexy herb and spice notes giving lift to the supple middle palate. Really saturates the mouth on the rising, echoing finish. Has a solid tannic spine to support a graceful evolution in bottle. Showing more stuffing than it did from barrel a year ago. 2010 Domaine Ramonet Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2010 Domaine Ramonet Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru (95BH, 93WS). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A restrained, elegant and ultra-pure nose of honeysuckle, white peach, pear and soft green apple aromas gives way to wonderfully refined and equally pure flavors that display glimpses of a fine minerality on the intense and impeccably well-balanced finish that delivers sneaky length because just when you think that it's gone, it reappears. This doesn't wow you with power or punch or even intensity; instead, it's the harmony and completeness that make this so special. I would give it at least 8 years of cellar time and 10 to 12 will probably ultimately be ideal in the end. Drink: 2018+" (06/2013)

Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2013 Etienne Sauzet Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru (OWC - (92-95BH), (93-95RP), 94VN) in original wood. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is more expressive on the nose than the Bienvenue at the moment, offering cold wet limestone and Granny Smith apple scents. There is certainly good intensity here. The palate is fresh and vibrant with finely tuned acidity, superb mineral concentration with splendid weight and length on the finish. For me, this is a cut above the Bienvenue this year and on par with last year's Bâtard-Montrachet. (NM)" (12/2014)

Wine Spectator: "A lean style, showing apple, pineapple and mineral driven by a racy structure, with a fine aftertaste of apple and mineral. This is intense and full of energy that's just waiting to be harnessed, which a few more years in the bottle should do. Best from 2009 through 2020. (BS)" (08/2007)

This is absolutely one to buy if you can find it." (01/2011)

2010 Jacques Carillon Bienvenues Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2010 Jacques Carillon Bienvenues Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru (96RP, 95BH, 94ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Subtle layers of lightly honeyed fruit, almonds, spices and pears wrap around the palate as the 2010 Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet shows off its class and personality. With time in the glass, the wine continues to open up as it gains richness and textural volume. The 2010 is pure Bienvenues in its silkiness and overall polish. Intense saline notes appear on the finish, but in the end the Bienvenues is all about textural elegance and sheer finesse. The 2010 is a fabulous effort from Jacques Carillon. Anticipated maturity: 2014+. (AG)" (08/2012)
