French Wine

When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its regions, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and occasionally as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a 100 lives. To understand and appreciate French wine, you only need to begin tasting them. Check out some of the top picks that our buyers have tracked down - several of these wines are imported directly from France.

1967 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1967 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac. Mouton-Rothschild, always in the forefront of the greatest wines of Bordeaux, was the first estate to begin complete chateau-bottling of the harvest -- a historic step initiated in 1924 by the late Philippe de Rothschild. It is the only chateau in the Classification of 1855 to achieve reclassification. In 1973, it was finally moved from a second growth to a first. The 1967 label features the artwork of César Baldaccini. Clive Coates: "Medium to medium-full colour. Mature but not unduly so. The nose is beginning to lighten up a little but there is good depth and class underneath nevertheless. Medium body, soft, fragrant. Attractive fruit. Good acidity. Never a wine of great concentration, and without the breed of Latour 1967, but definitely a success." Tasted 1990 - (Grand Vins, the Finest Châteaux of Bordeaux and their Wines, pg 71)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2002 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault Clos de la Barre ((91-93RP), 92BH, (89-91ST)). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Honeyed minerals are drenched with an herbal liqueur in the fabulous aromatics of the 2002 Meursault Clos de La Barre. This broad, ample, sexy wine is hugely decadent. Medium-bodied, thick, and fleshy, it is a deep, intensely flavored, spicy effort. (PR)" (02/2004)

2005 La Pousse d'Or Volnay 1er Cru "Clos des 60 Ouvrées"
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2005 La Pousse d'Or Volnay 1er Cru "Clos des 60 Ouvrées" ((92-94BH), 94RP, 93ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Volnay Caillerets Clos des 60 Ouvrees (like the Clos d’Audinac and Clos de la Bousse d’Or, a monopole) features the oldest vines in the estate’s Volnay holdings, more than half of them planted in the mid fifties. Black cherry, purple plum, pistachio, ginger, and cumin inform the nose. On the palate this offers old vines creaminess, flattering glycerin, and yet also a persistently bright freshness of black fruits. A deep, lingering, faintly caramel-inflected bitter-sweetness, spice, and chalk further testifies to the concentration in this wine, which surpasses the Bousse d’Or in structure and gives it a hard run for its money in the charm department. Check on this in 8-10 years but then figure on another decade of improvement in the cellar. (DS)" (04/2007)

2010 Domaine Coche-Dury Bourgogne Aligoté
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2010 Domaine Coche-Dury Bourgogne Aligoté. Allen Meadows - Burghound: " *Outstanding* A spicy and agreeably fresh nose offers up notes of citrus, white flowers and spice hints. There is good verve and detail thanks to the bright acidity that is supporting the lightly mineral-infused flavors that terminate in a dry and clean finish. This is a really lovely Aligoté with notably better complexity than the typical example." (06/2013)

Wine & Spirits: "Domaine Leflaive includes 7.56 acres of Les Pucelles in three blocks, with many vines dating back to the 1950s and '60s. Those vines, saved from botrytis by September's north wind, captured the sunshine at the end of a long, damp season and transformed it into bold, spicy energy in the wine. The mineral flavors seem to reach back to the deep roots of the vines, sustained with the freshness of an orchard of heirloom apples." (04/2011)

This is solidly structured yet not hard but it will require every bit of a decade to begin drinking well and it should age gracefully for years. In a word, gorgeous." (01/2004)

2012 Dominique Lafon Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Champs Gains"
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2012 Dominique Lafon Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Champs Gains". Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2012 tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Champ Gains shows a little reduction on the nose, albeit in an appealing manner, with endearing mineral scents developing with five to ten minutes in the glass. The palate is fresh and tensile, the acidity quite high and forming a very citric, rather sharp finish that needs to calm down, which I suspect it will if you can afford this four to five years in bottle. Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2011 Domaine Henri Boillot Chambertin Grand Cru ((94-96VN), 95ST, 94BH, 91RP). Vinous: "Remarkably balanced for such a young wine, the 2011 Chambertin flows across the palate with magnificent depth and balance. There is virtually no sensation of tannin at all, while the flavors are remarkably pure and delineated. Dark red stone fruits, wild flowers and spices are some of the many notes that inform the finish in this silky, utterly dazzling Burgundy. Today, the Chambertin looks like it will be accessible before the Bèze. (AG)" (03/2014)

Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2008 Domaine Fourrier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru "Gruenchers" Vieille Vigne ((89-91BH), 91ST). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good medium red. Sappy aromas of raspberry, blueberry and stone lifted by violet and dried rose. Very rich and sweet but with lovely mineral energy and a sound core of acidity. Sappy but not quite peppery. For all its fruit, this concentrated, very long wine finishes with exhilarating saline soil tones. (ST)" (03/2011)

Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2013 Domaine Colin-Deléger Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru (94BH, (91-93ST)). Allen Meadows - Burghound: " *Don't Miss!* A gorgeously perfumed, elegant and intensely floral nose displays background nuances of spice, citrus, honeysuckle and wet stone. The refinement continues onto the pungently mineral-driven flavors that possess a bit more overall size, weight and mid-palate concentration than the Demoiselles, all wrapped in a cool, classy and hugely persistent finish. This is positively Zen-like and this should amply repay up to a decade of cellaring, perhaps even a bit more. This is class in a glass." (06/2015)

1990 d'Yquem, Sauternes
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1990 d'Yquem, Sauternes (99RP, 95WS, 94ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "An extraordinary effort, Yquem's 1990 is a rich and fabulously superb, sweet wine. This wine also possesses lots of elegance and finesse. The wine's medium gold color is accompanied by an exceptionally sweet nose of honeyed tropical fruits, peaches, coconut, and apricots. High quality, subtle toasty oak is well-integrated. The wine is massive on the palate, with layers of intensely ripe botrytis-tinged, exceptionally sweet fruit. Surprisingly well-integrated acidity, and a seamless, full-bodied power and richness have created a wine of remarkable harmony and purity. Certainly it is one of the richest Yquems I have ever tasted, with 50-100 years of potential longevity. An awesome Yquem! Anticipated maturity: 2003-2050+. (RP)" (04/1999)

There is good detail and a beguiling vibrancy to the saline and intense medium-bodied flavors that possess a firm and solidly persistent finish. If this can add a bit of depth during the course of its evolution it could merit the upper end of my projected range." (01/2014)

Its spice, star anise, toasted oak, and mineral-scented nose gives way to a rich, broad, powerful character. Medium to full-bodied, and exhibiting layers of ripe apples, white pears, and stone-like flavors, this is an intense, concentrated, compelling effort. (PR)" (04/2000)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2009 DRC Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Corton Grand Cru (94BH, (91-94RP), 93ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Corton, here in its first vintage, is a wine that has very high expectations pinned on it for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the prestige the Domaine is sure to bring to the appellation following its recent purchase of three vineyards in Corton. It shows a rich core of dark red fruit that powers through to the finish with tons of authority and concentration. The Corton is a solid wine from start to finish, but it also possesses beautifully delineated aromatics and tons of potential. This will be a fascinating wine to follow over the coming years. The early accessibility that defines some of the Domaine's other -entry-level- wines is nowhere to be found, however, so readers will need to be patient. The Corton is a blend of parcels in Clos du Roi, Bressandes and Renardes. The old-vine fruit from all three vineyards is harveste

2002 Domaine Truchot-Martin Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2002 Domaine Truchot-Martin Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes (97RP, (90-92BH)). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Bottles of Truchot are achieving posthumous acclaim and this 2002 Clos de la Roche demonstrates exactly why. The bouquet is everything you could wish for in a bottle of Burgundy: ethereal rose-petal- tinged red berry fruit (sloe, boysenberry and mulberry), almost Vosne-like in personality and blossoming in the glass. The aromatics are so beguiling that they demur you from actually drinking it. But the palate does not disappoint: exquisite balance, weightless intensity, a bewitching crescendo of flavors, tarry mulberry fruit interlaced with seaweed and fennel, leading to a bravura finish. Utterly stupendous. (NM)" (10/2014)

This silky-textured beauty is loaded with creamed cherries, blackberry syrup, spices, and vanilla. It is fresh, focused, sexy, yet well-structured. Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2000 Vilmart Brut Coeur de Cuvee (94RP, 94W&S, 93ST, 93WS, 90WE). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2000 Coeur de Cuvee is literally made from the “heart” of the juice, with the first and last part of the pressing discarded. This is a richly textured, intense wine loaded with ripe fruit and sweet toasted oak. Today it remains quite primary, but it will be stunner in a few years’ time, once the full range of its tertiary aromas and flavors have developed. Patience is the key. Coeur de Cuvee is 80% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Noir from 50-year old vines. (AG)" (12/2008)

Bid on this 2-magnum lot of 2007 Domaine Roulot Meursault 1er Cru "Les Charmes" (1.5L) (93BH, 92ST, 90RP). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Unlike this wine in 750 ml (see there review herein), there was no touch of unabsorbed sulfur on the nose though there was a mild note of reduction that still allowed the aromas of acacia blossom, hazelnut and brioche to be appreciated. There is good richness to the detailed, textured and silky medium-bodied flavors that caress the palate on the minty and still noticeably tight finish. Not surprisingly in magnum format this is still very much on the way up so I would recommend giving this at least another 5 to 10 years of cellar time first." (12/2015)

2011 Domaine Ramonet Montrachet Grand Cru
Bid on this bottle of 2011 Domaine Ramonet Montrachet Grand Cru (97BH, 95WS). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "The strikingly complex, cool and reserved nose of mostly citrus, stone, floral and white orchard fruit aromas still displays plenty of wood that has not yet been integrated but the density is certainly here to allow that to happen even though it may require 3 to 5 years to do so. In the context of the 2011 vintage this is a superbly well-concentrated wine as the imposingly scaled flavors are a breathtaking combination of size, weight, tension and borderline painful intensity. Despite all of the volume, there is absolutely no heaviness, indeed the acid support is such that this remains impeccably well-balanced on the hugely long and palate staining finish. While it is of course still in the early days for the vintage this is absolutely a strong candidate for the wine of the vintage." (10/2014)

The Charmes is quite big and broad-shouldered on the palate, with great power and intensity from start to finish. Medium-bodied, elegant and seamless, it's a delicious, certainly outstanding wine to drink over the coming 3-5 years. Put this in a blind tasting with top-notch Burgundies and shock your friends. 2010 Domaine Tollot-Beaut Chorey-lès-Beaune "Pièce du Chapitre"
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2010 Domaine Tollot-Beaut Chorey-lès-Beaune "Pièce du Chapitre". Allen Meadows of Burghound.com spoke with Nathalie Tollot about the 2010 vintage, who said it was an "excellent vintage that started poorly but ended well. We experienced a lousy flowering that seriously affected yields and then mediocre summer weather, but the good news is that the small crop is what enabled the fruit to attain such an ideal level of ripeness, which would have never happened otherwise. We were down between 25 and 30% depending on the vineyard in question. Sugars were strong at between 12.5 and 13.5% so almost nothing was chaptalized. The fruit was very clean and we had no issues with either fermentation. Overall, I love the vintage and prefer it to 2009 as I like the freshness and verve plus the wines have that clean and refreshing mouth feel."

1998 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1998 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac (98RP, 95WS, 94ST, 94W&S). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot, this wine represents only 34% of Lafite's total harvest. In a less than perfect Medoc vintage, it has been spectacular since birth, putting on more weight and flesh over the last year. This opaque purple-colored 1998 is close to perfection. The spectacular nose of lead pencil, smoky, mineral, and black currant fruit soars majestically from the glass. The wine is elegant yet profoundly rich, revealing the essence of Lafite's character. The tannin is sweet, and the wine is spectacularly layered yet never heavy. The finish is sweet, super-rich, yet impeccably balanced and long (50+ seconds). Anticipated maturity: 2007-2035. Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2008 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin "Les Champeaux" Vieille Vigne (93ST, (90-92BH), 92RP). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good bright red. Sappy red cherry, raspberry, minerals and crushed stone on the nose; more pristine than the Cherbaudes. Then suave and juicy in the mouth, with terrific cut and purity to the tangy red berry and mineral flavors. Penetrating and powerful yet at the same time elegant. Bid on this bottle of 2011 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Montrachet Grand Cru ((93-96BH), 96VN). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "This is even less expressive than the Chevalier though the underlying fruit is clearly fresh and ripe with mostly citrus and floral aromas. This is exceptionally well-concentrated with fine phenolic ripeness to the very broad-shouldered flavors that possess outstanding power if not quite the intensity or the minerality of the Chevalier. The explosive and bone dry finish compensates however by being even longer and more complex. Overall, the two wines are qualitative equals, at least at this very early juncture though their respective personalities are quite different. Once again, plenty of patience will be required." Bid on this bottle of 1989 Krug "Clos de Mesnil" Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne (OWC - 96RP, 94WS) in original wood. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1989 Clos du Mesnil, from a warmer year, makes for a fascinating contrast to the cool inward 1988. It is a bigger, fatter wine that caresses the palate with layers of expansive, generous fruit. Sweet scents of caramel, hazelnuts and honey add complexity to the fruit. Despite its burnished, textured fruit, the 1989 remains light on its feet and superbly well-balanced but it is at, or close to, peak. To put things in perspective, the 1989 was harvested at the beginning of September -- the 7th and 8th to be exact -- while the 1988 was harvested between September 30th and October 2nd. 1989 La Mission Haut-Brion, Pessac-Léognan
Bid on this bottle of 1989 La Mission Haut-Brion, Pessac-Léognan (100RP, 97ST, 96WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Both La Mission-Haut-Brion and Haut-Brion hit home runs in this vintage, which did not produce as many profound wines as the Bordeaux publicity machine suggested. 1989, the 200th anniversary of the French revolution, was an incredibly hot year (surpassed only by 1990 and 2003). Even from barrel the seamless 1989 La Mission revealed a special elixir aspect, tasting like it had been designed by Chanel. It still possesses a blue/purple color with only a hint of garnet creeping in, and the explosive aromatics offer up notes of licorice, creme de cassis, blueberry liqueur, smoky barbecue meats, truffles and graphite. If that’s not enough to get one salivating, the palate has never disappointed either. Full-bodied with extraordinary opulence as well as sweet, well-integrated, velvety tannins, this fresh, lively, blockbuster La Mission appears to be one of those rare wines tha

Allen Meadows - Burghound: "This has what all of the best 2012s have, which is to say a brilliant texture. To be clear, it's not about density per se though that is part of it. Rather it's the way that the density interacts with the acidity such that the flavors deliver both richness and delineation, provided of course that the proper serving temperature is respected because if not the same beguiling texture just becomes heavy. The nose offers up the telltale Ramonet hint of mint along with lovely floral and spice nuances to the mostly white orchard fruit and lemon skin scents that are trimmed in just enough wood to notice. There is fine concentration to the vibrant, cool and ultra-pure medium-bodied flavors that possess that beguiling texture, all wrapped in a palate coating and strikingly long finish. There is good volume and verve to the attractively, even seductively textured medium weight flavors that possess really lovely intensity along with fine acid support on the strikingly persistent finish. In the classic mode of a fine Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet this isn't particularly powerful or concentrated but rather it is a wine of harmony and grace albeit one with terrific potential." Bid on this bottle of 1999 Domaine Armand Rousseau Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru (97BH, (92-95RP), 94ST). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "The '99 Bèze just continues to get better and better with every passing year. A flat out gorgeously complex nose is comprised by spice, earth, minerality and still fresh red and black pinot fruit aromas. There is excellent richness to the intense and beautifully well-delineated medium-bodied flavors that are blessed with plenty of mouth coating dry extract that confers a seductive texture onto the strikingly persistent finish. Like the '99 Chambertin, while this could be drunk now I would strongly advise holding it for at least another 5 years and 10 would probably be better. 1986 Gruaud Larose, St-Julien (3L)
Bid on this 3L-bottle of 1986 Gruaud Larose, St-Julien (3L) (96RP, 95VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Still tasting as if it were only 7-8 years of age, the dense, garnet/purple-colored 1986 Gruaud-Larose is evolving at a glacier pace. The wine still has mammoth structure, tremendous reserves of fruit and concentration, and a finish that lasts close to a minute. The wine is massive, very impressively constituted, with still some mouth-searing tannin to shed. Decanting of one to two hours in advance seems to soften it a bit, but this is a wine that seems to be almost immortal in terms of its longevity. It is a great Medoc classic, and certainly one of the most magnificent Gruaud-Larose ever made. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2035. Last tasted, 10/02. (RP)" (01/2003)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I have said it so many times that it may seem redundant, but if you missed it in my 1990 tome, Burgundy, Lalou Bize-Leroy stands virtually alone at the top of Burgundy’s quality hierarchy. Because she is a perfectionist, and because she has had the courage to produce wines from low yields and bottle them naturally, without fining or filtration, she has been scorned by many Burgundy negociants, and even by the proprietors of other top domaines. Not only are they jealous, they are frightened of Bize-Leroy because they fear increasing pressure for lower yields and bio-dynamic farming. Anyone who loves great Burgundy, must realize that her wines embarrass much of what is produced in Burgundy. Robert M. PARKER from the “Guide Robert Parker French Wines”, 1997"

Yquem produced its greatest wine since the twin titans of 1975 and 1976. Medium golden, with a big, opulent, honeyed, oaky, flowery, tropical fruit bouquet, this wine is rich and concentrated, has very good acidity, a lot of botrytis, and a stunning finish. Bid on this 6-half-bottle lot of 1986 Climens, Barsac (375ml) (96RP, 94WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A totally compelling Climens and to my mind, every bit as good as the 1988, the 1986 is probably the best Climens made since their spectacular 1971. It is still light gold in color, with an expansive bouquet of new oak, oranges, pineapples, and other tropical fruits. In the mouth, the great richness seems all the more impressive because of the wine's remarkable clarity and definition. There is as much botrytis in the 1986 as in the 1988. Despite the intensity and extract levels, this sweet wine comes across as crisp and relatively light. The 1986 is a stunning example of Climens at its very best. Anticipated maturity: 1994-2010. Last tasted, 6/93. (RP)" (08/1993)

Of the 2000 Gruaud-Larose, St-Julien,Robert Parker's Wine Advocate writes: "A very strong effort for Gruaud Larose, possibly eclipsed by what they have done in 2009, this is a pure, full-bodied Gruaud Larose with plenty of new saddle leather, cedar wood, black currants, cherries, licorice, and Provencal herbs. 2012 Rauzan-Ségla, Margaux (OWC)
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2012 Rauzan-Ségla, Margaux (OWC - 94RP, 94WE, 93JS, 92VN, 91WS) in original wood. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "(94+ points): The 2012 Rauzan-Ségla (54.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot and 1.5% Petit Verdot) is a classic Rauzan-Ségla, still relatively backward and tannic, but concentrated and extremely promising. Dense blueberry, blackberry and cassis fruit along with some licorice, vanilla, foresty notes and spice are all present in this full-bodied yet structured and big, beefy style of Rauzan-Ségla . It may turn out to be somewhat atypical for this château in its size and masculine structure, but this is impressive wine, and one of the great successes of the vintage. Give it 5-7 years of bottle age and drink it over the following three decades. 94+ Points (RP)" (04/2015)

It is followed by an enormously concentrated wine of full body, layers of concentration and sweet tannin. The wine seems to be just hitting its plateau of maturity, where it should last for at least 10-15 more years. A prodigious Talbot. Anticipated maturity: Now-2020. (RP)" (01/2003)

Bid on this 4-half-bottle lot of 1988 Rieussec, Sauternes (375ml) (93RP, 90ST, 90WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1988 remains a very backward wine. Full-bodied and powerful, extremely rich and dense, it may be the least evolved 1988. The nose offers enticing coconut, orange, vanilla, and honeyed scents. The flavors are highly extracted. The wine's acidity and youthfulness suggest this wine needs another 5-10 years of cellaring. It should keep for 30 years. Last tasted 11/94. (RP)" (01/1998)

1973 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1973 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac. Chris Kissack's TheWineDoctor.com: "Phillippe Rothschild called it '...the monstrous injustice' of Mouton's second growth status. For years the labels stated simply 'Premier ne puis, second ne daigne, Mouton suis,' or 'First I cannot be, second I do not deign to be, I am Mouton'. It was clear from the great vintages produced in the 1860s and 1870s that the 1855 classification was already outdated, and that change was long overdue. But no such review of this classification will ever take place, and it was only thanks to the tireless campaigning of Philippe that Jacques Chirac, then Minister of Agriculture, passed a decree conferring the status of first growth upon Mouton-Rothschild in 1973. At last the wrong had been righted, and from then on Mouton's labels bore a new inscription, 'Premier je suis, second je fus. Mouton ne change,' or 'First I am, second I was. Mouton does not change'."

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Ducru Beaucaillou is a 10,000-case blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Merlot (they used to produce 18,000-20,000 cases). It is an exceptionally powerful wine with a dense purple color, superb intensity, and a beautiful, sweet nose of spring flowers, raspberries, blueberries, graphite, and creme de cassis. Full-bodied with fabulous concentration, exceptionally high tannin, good acidity, and massive layers of richness that build incrementally on the palate, this monumental effort is more structured than their outstanding 2003. Thick, sappy and pungently oaky, with terrific intensity. An uncanny combination of power and finesse. Still rather closed in on itself yet already extremely complex. The 2001 Vosne-Romanée Clos du Château is fully mature in colour with light bricking on the rim. The bouquet has retained more fruité that the debut 2000 with light cranberry and tomato-vine scents, soft with delicate rose-petal scents. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted three times since bottling, the 1996 Lafite-Rothschild is unquestionably this renowned estate's greatest wine... This massive wine may be the biggest, largest-scaled Lafite I have ever tasted. It will require many years to come around, so I suspect all of us past the age of fifty might want to give serious consideration as to whether we should be laying away multiple cases of this wine. It is also the first Lafite-Rothschild to be put into a new engraved bottle (designed to prevent fraudulent imitations). The wine exhibits a thick-looking, ruby/purple color, and a knock-out nose of lead pencil, minerals, flowers, and black currant scents. Extremely powerful and full-bodied, with remarkable complexity for such a young wine, this huge Lafite is oozing with extract and richness, yet has managed to preserve its quintessentially elegant personality. The 2002 was seamless, ripe, opulent and intricately woven, with a kaleidoscopic, vivid expression of fruit that was breathtaking. The 1996 showed more advanced notes of smoke, tar and licorice, all wrapped around a massive core of fruit. It was a profound Pucelles. Penetrating, vineyard-typical flavors of spices, minerals and wet stone. Dense but rather uncompromising wine that avoids dryness. Rather light on its feet. Finishes with a note of butterscotch. This full-bodied classic boasts a dense purple color as well as a superb nose of graphite, creme de cassis, forest floor, licorice and a hint of truffles, low acidity, and extravagant richness. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2011 Musigny Grand Cru has a fragrant, floral, understated bouquet that is beautifully defined and focused. With time in the glass it offers subtle forest floor and damp soil scents that merely add to its complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannins and exquisite balance. It tiptoes across the senses rather than delivering a payload of flavors, while the finish offers extraordinary precision and nuance. It is a long-term wine of immense density -- deceptively so. Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Precise aromas of tangerine, crushed stone and cold steel. Wonderfully penetrating and vibrant, with lemon and stone flavors offering great class and cut. This mounts impressively on the back end, finishing with superb precision and energy. If the Boucheres is like Alsace pinot gris, this is more akin to austere, stony grand cru riesling. I'd lay this down for at least six or seven years. Interestingly, Roulot believes the '99s will be easier to drink in their earlier years than these '02s." (10/2004)

Bid on this bottle of 1996 Domaine Roumier Bonnes Mares Grand Cru ((93-95RP), 94BH, 93ST, 93WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Displaying a dark ruby color and a fabulous nose of candied red fruits and cookie dough, this wine is an immensely rich, multi-dimensional masterpiece. This broad-shouldered, ample, oily-textured, masculine, structured, and medium-to-full-bodied wine is formidably concentrated and complex. Highly-focused blackberries, violets, lilies, stones, earth, and cassis flavors are intermingled with grilled and spiced new oak. Its prodigiously long finish is expansive, rendering its copious and supple tannins invisible. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2017. (PR)" (08/1998)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Dujac's light-colored wines are a testament to how much punch a deceptively shallow-looking Pinot Noir can deliver. The medium ruby-colored Echezeaux displays sweet, plummy fruits in the nose and an extremely refined, silky-textured, violet and cherry-filled, beautifully intense flavor profile. Elegant, this delicate gem should be at its best between 2004-2012. This note is the result of tastings I did in Burgundy between January 7 and January 29. (PR)" (06/1997)

Wine & Spirits: "If a wine could ever make you want to pull the top down on your '68 Ferrari convertible, rip off the rearview mirror and take off, this is it. It has a different kind of energy than the '02 Cristal Rosé, which is more ethereal, like strawberries at the right hand of some ancient Gallic god. This is more insolent, brash, earth bound. All the scents and flavors seem to emanate from limestone, as does the acidity, which hits at the front of the mouth and powers through the wine with the kind of solar energy that lifts mist off the white chalk on a cool morning in Cramant. Bid on this bottle of 2004 Jacquesson "Champs Cain" Avize Brut Champagne (96RP, 95VN, 93ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "From vines planted in 1962, the single-vineyard Jacquesson 2004 Extra Brut Avize Champ Cain leads with an utterly remarkable nose. A greenhouse-like profusion of leafing and flowering things is imposed over sea breeze, with jasmine; musky narcissus; nose-prickling spice as if from some exotic orchid; iodine-tinged toasted shrimp shells; and toasted grain all pungently present and anticipating the elusive complexity delivered on a caressingly polished yet consummately refreshing and almost ethereally delicate palate. Over time, the sense of creaminess and the refinement of bubbles became more evident, along with a contrasting impression of enhanced piquancy, suggesting hops and lentil sprouts, all in the context of remarkable poise and transparency to nuance. The endlessly fascinating finish remains infectiously juicy and subtly yet mouthwateringly saline. Lucky o

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2004 Château de Beaucastel "Hommage a Jacques Perrin" Châteauneuf-du-Pape ((96-98ST), 96WS, 95RP). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Saturated ruby. Remarkably deep nose combines cherry, raspberry, licorice, smoked meat and mineral notes, all lifted by an intense floral quality. A stunning example of freshness and precision married to power, with deep cassis, bitter cherry and candied licorice flavors enlivened by zesty minerality and framed by firm but harmonious tannins. 'This is not about extraction,' notes Perrin. The endless finish echoes the mineral and floral tones, showing a persistent lavender note. This was not yet bottled when I tasted it. (JR)" (02/2007)

Bid on this bottle of 1996 Domaine Roumier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru "Les Amoureuses" ((91-93RP), 93ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Christophe Roumier described this wine as having "serenity and calm." This ruby-colored wine offers aromas of sweet cherries, fresh herbs, blackberries, violets, and blueberries that give way to its oily-textured, rich, broad, lively, and highly-detailed personality. Morels soaked in blackberry juice and dusted with minerals can be found in this expansive and concentrated beauty's flavor profile as well as in its oaky, satiny finish. (PR)" (08/1998)

Black in color, with incredible aromas of crushed blackberry, mineral, licorice and lead pencil. Full-bodied, with a mind-blowing texture of seamless tannins that coat every millimeter of the palate. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The first of a succession of brilliant wines that have emerged from this previously moribund estate over the last decade, the fully mature 2000 Lascombes is an outstanding effort. Notes of cedarwood, roasted herbs, incense, black cherries, and currants emerge from this medium-bodied, evolved Margaux. Consume it over the next 7-8 years." (06/2010)

1971 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1971 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This wine, which was a medium-weight, charming example in its youth, continues to develop well. Recent bottles have been the finest I have tasted of the 1971 Mouton-Rothschild. The color remains a deep dark garnet with some amber at the edge. The wine offers up a classic Pauillac nose of cedar, black currants, and lead pencil aromas. On the palate, it reveals a savory, sweet, cedary, currant flavor profile with good freshness, adequate acidity, and ripe tannin. (RP)" (01/1998)

Sappy, precise and deep, showing outstanding cut and lift to its flavors of crushed red raspberry and dried flowers. Like the Clos Vougeot this conveys an impression of great vivacity, but this one is in a more feminine, weightless style. Spectacular, ethereal nose offers aromas of cranberry, pomegranate, blackberry, dried rose, cinnamon and menthol. Like liquid silk on the palate, with superb sappy intensity and energy to the lightly saline flavors of dark fruits, clove, minerals and flowers. A wine of compelling complexity, finishing with noble tannins and great palate-staining persistence. Owing to the high percentage of uncrushed berries, this wine had the longest cuvaison in the cellar. (ST)" (01/2012)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Beginning to open magnificently, the still dense purple-colored 2000 reveals a blossoming bouquet of blackberries, cassis, graphite and pen ink. Full-bodied with velvety tannins that have resolved themselves beautifully over the last eleven years, this wine is still an adolescent, but it exhibits admirable purity, texture, mouthfeel and power combined with elegance. Of recent vintages, I think only the 2009 can give it a run for its money. A blend of 53% Merlot and 47% Cabernet Franc, the wine has a sweet nose of menthol, melted licorice, boysenberry, blueberry, and cassis. A broad wine with compelling purity, a layered texture, and sweet tannin, with hints of coffee and earth in the background, this is by far the best Cheval Blanc since 1990 and before 2009. It is a legend in the making and can actually be drunk now, as the tannins have nearly melted away. This is a beauty with incredibly complex aromatics. Drink it over the next 25-30 years. 1975 Beychevelle, St-Julien
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1975 Beychevelle, St-Julien. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Early in this wine's life, it tasted precocious and forward for the normally tannic, hard wines of the vintage. However, this wine has now firmed up, and it should turn out to be the longest-lived Beychevelle of the seventies. Dark ruby, with a ripe, spicy, leather-and-black currant-scented bouquet, this full-bodied, weighty, muscular Beychevelle is atypically powerful. Whether it will ever resolve all the tannins remains debatable. (RP)" (01/1998)

The 1999 Corton-Charlemagne reveals lovely aromatic depth of minerals and spices. Medium-bodied, rich, and precise, this is a defined, pure, detailed wine filled with lemons, nuts, and pears. 2007 Clos Rougeard "Le Bourg" Saumur Champigny
Bid on this bottle of 2007 Clos Rougeard "Le Bourg" Saumur Champigny. The Foucault brothers Nady and Charlie are the owners of Clos Rougeard, and in France, at least, their wines have certainly achieved Cult-like status with every three-star restaurant in Paris hustling to get a small allocation. Not surprisingly, hardly anyone in American has even heard of Clos Rougeard. Well, we're here to change all that. This estate has been in the family for several generations. The Foucault brothers tend exceptional vineyards, harvest at small yields, vinify in barrel, let the wines age for a couple of years in a frigid cellar and bottle without filtration. The result is a few of the top red wines of the Loire Valley and in the top of France as a whole. Charles Joguet, the great winemaker of Chinon, once said: "there are two suns. One shines outside for everybody. The second shines in the Foucaults' cellar." 100% cabernet franc and designed for all manner of food.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This medium-to-dark ruby/purple-colored wine has a delightfully elegant and feminine nose of candied cherries, raspberries, smoke, and Asian spices. This deeply ripe, dense, broad, medium-to-full-bodied, and expansive wine is intense, powerful, and muscular, yet is completely refined and focused. Its chewy-textured and cassis and blackberry-flavored personality needed air to blossom the day of my tasting (remember, these wines have never been racked). Of the 2000 La Gomerie, St-Emilion,Robert Parker's Wine Advocate writes: "Two recent tastings of the 2000 La Gomerie both reinforced my comments of seven years ago. An interesting thing about this 100% Merlot is how well it ages. Perhaps it deserves more attention. Its dense purple color is followed by a beautiful perfume of spring flowers, creme de cassis, jammy black cherries, licorice, graphite, and espresso roast. Bid on this bottle of 2002 Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru (96RP, 94BH, 94ST, 94VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is a Chevalier-Montrachet that really delivers. The 2000 Chevalier Montrachet has a sensational walnut and smoke-tinged nose that is brilliantly focused and vibrant. This just shimmers with tension and develops hints of cockleshell with time. The palate follows through in style: taut and precise and barely showing its age, deep with great intensity and subtle notes of vanilla pod and coconut toward the finish, though they never obstruct the mineral core of this fantastic Chevalier-Montrachet. Drink now without guilt, cellar for another decade likewise. (NM)" (10/2014)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2006 Denis Bachelet Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes ((91-94BH), 94RP, 92ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Pre-selection and rigorous sorting appear to have eliminated any negative impact of hail in Bachelet's 2006 Charmes-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes, but with the result that this virtually always intense and well-structured wine from 80 year old vines is even more so than usual. Bitter-sweet herbal, tarry, and almost liqueur-like dark berry concentrates (cassis and black raspberry) – along with low-toned roast meatiness – inform a seamless palate, softer to the touch and with a more restrained impression of acidity than the old vines village Gevrey, yet still plenty of vivacious primary fruit juiciness. Hints of sealing wax and inner-mouth perfume of peony, heliotrope, and rose add intrigue and allure. Resin, iodine, and wet stone convey a sense of depth in the lingering finish, and speaking of 'lingering,' the empty glass smells so sweetly fr

Tar, scorched earth, black cherries, licorice and smoke take shape in the glass as the Cras shows off its intense personality. Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2005 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru "Clos du Chateau des Ducs" ((93-94RP), 93BH, 92ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "From their monopole immediately above the village, the Lafarge 2005 Volnay Clos du Chateau des Ducs combines black cherry and cassis with concentrated meat stock, displays flattering creaminess of texture for such a youthful and richly tannic Pinot, and finishes long on a myriad of low-toned bitter-sweet notes including fruit skin, fruit pits, dark chocolate, caramel, marrow, black truffle and wet stone. Its flavor profile is composed of stones soaked in cherry juice, Asian spices, licorice, flowers, and hints of freshly laid asphalt. Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Musky aromas of chicken broth, lime and crushed stone; quite austere and slow to open. Then less fruity but more important on the palate, with bracing flavors of lemon and apple and an impression of minerality I can only describe as creamy. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2010 Domaine Roulot Meursault "Les Tessons Clos de Mon Plaisir" (93RP, 93ST, 93VN, 92BH). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2010 Meursault Les Tessons Clos de Mon Plaisir is another vivid, totally compelling white. The aromas and flavors seem to explode from the glass. Layers of minerality provide the backbone as this subtle, gracious wine seems to waft from the glass. What is most impressive about the Tessons is the richness Roulot has achieved while avoiding any sense of heaviness. Anticipated maturity: 2013+. (AG)" (08/2012)

2006 Domaine des Chezeaux Clos-St.-Denis Vieilles Vignes (1.5L)
Bid on this magnum of 2006 Domaine des Chezeaux Clos-St.-Denis Vieilles Vignes (1.5L). This wine is the same as that sold under the Ponsot label, except for the paper sticker on the bottle. It even has his proprietary glass and comes from the same 100+ year-old vines, as well as being vinified in the same cellar. Oh, and the price—a fraction of that under Ponsot's own label. Such are the joys of share-cropping. The Ponsot wine recieved 92=94 points from Allen Meadows in Burghound: "Strong reduction. The flavor profile is wonderfully rich, full and naturally sweet and brimming with buckets of dry extract that renders the tannins all but invisible on the fantastically deep and impressively balanced finish that offers up lovely freshness and precision. What I really admire about this wine is that it delivers so much flavor pop and breadth with absolutely no trace of undue weight or heaviness. In a word, terrific." (01/2008)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Grivot’s 2005 Vosne-Romanee Les Beaumonts delivers scents of blackberry, cassis, violets, fennel, and pungent brown spices. Clear and invigorating in fruit, yet creamy and mouth-coating, this brings spices, flowers and a note of chalk into its long, refined finish. The tannins are superbly fine and the longer this opens in the glass the more perfumed it becomes. (DS)" (04/2007)

Bid on this magnum of 2007 Domaine du Vieux Telegraphe "La Crau" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (1.5L) (96RP, 95WS, 93ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2007 Vieux Telegraphe may be the greatest wine made at this property since the 2005 and 1998. Dense ruby/purple-tinged with an exquisite nose of salty sea breezes, licorice, ground pepper, jammy black cherries, black currants, figs, and plums, this is a full-bodied, rich, Provencal-styled offering with lots of sweet, ripe tannin. It is surprisingly accessible for a Vieux Telegraphe (this wine normally shuts down several years after bottling), but it should have great longevity (25+ years) given its power, full-bodied mouthfeel, and enormous length and richness. This is a brilliant effort from brothers Frederic and Daniel Brunier. (RP)" (10/2009)

Licorice root, black tea and cedar round out the finish, which has tons of grip and cut, but also manages to stay elegant. No Réserve des Célestins in 2003. Drink now through 2027. (JM)" (10/2010)

Bid on this bottle of 2005 Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru (93BH, 91ST). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A very subtle hint of wood spice sets off dried rose petal, citrus and peach aromas that precede the rich, structured and intense flavors that are more backward than those of the Criots and seem decidedly primary by comparison and culminate in a driving and distinctly austere finish. I should note though that this is on the awkward side today and my score offers the benefit of the doubt for the admirable track record this wine has achieved over the years, particularly since 2000." Of the 2000 La Conseillante, Pomerol,Robert Parker's Wine Advocate writes: "La Conseillante made an excellent wine in 2001, another great one in 2005, and the estate hit home runs in both 2008 and, above all, in 2009. In fact, the latter vintage may well end up being the modern-day reference point for La Conseillante. Nevertheless, there’s a lot to be said for this 2000. An elegant, gentle style that is never a blockbuster, the 2000 La Conseillante has a deep ruby/plum/purple color and an unbelievably expressive nose of sweet kirsch liqueur intermixed with raspberries, incense, toast, and licorice. Full-bodied yet ethereal in the sense that it seems to combine power along with eloquence and delicacy, this is a beautifully pure wine that has just hit its plateau of full maturity, although

Bid on this bottle of 1990 Domaine Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Clos St. Jacques" (96RP, 93BH, 90WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Jadot, which has major holdings in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin, has turned out some stunning wines at the premier cru level. It produced a profound Gevrey-Chambertin-Clos St.-Jacques. Andre Gagey, who, along with his son, Pierre-Henri, and their winemaker, Jacques Lardiere, participated in the tasting, announced he had put considerable quantities of this particular wine in his cellar to "help get him through his retirement." The color is a saturated dark ruby. The nose explodes from the glass, offering a melange of scents, including black-raspberries, toasty new oak, cloves, vanilla, and candy. In the mouth, there is astonishing richness, a thick, well-defined texture, and a flamboyant, moderately tannic finish that lasts well over a minute. Precise, well-delineated, and medium to full-bodied, with magnificent purity and understated elegance, this noble, restrained wine reveals a tannic finish, suggesting 4-5 more years of cellaring is warranted. 1996 Léoville-Las Cases, St-Julien
Bid on this bottle of 1996 Léoville-Las Cases, St-Julien (98RP, 96ST, 92WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A profound Leoville Las Cases, it is one of the great modern day wines of Bordeaux. This wine's hallmark remains a sur-maturite (over-ripeness) of the Cabernet Sauvignon grape. Yet the wine has retained its intrinsic classicism, symmetry, and profound potential for complexity and elegance. The black/purple color is followed by a spectacular nose of cassis, cherry liqueur, pain grille, and minerals. It is powerful and rich on the attack, with beautifully integrated tannin, massive concentration, yet no hint of heaviness or disjointedness. As this wine sits in the glass it grows in stature and richness. It is a remarkable, seamless, palate-staining, and extraordinarily elegant wine - the quintessential St.-Julien. Despite the sweetness of the tannin, I would recommend cellaring this wine for 7-8 years. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2035. (RP)" (04/1999)

In 2007, the elegant, pure and ripe aromas are allowed center stage as they introduce detailed, stony and balanced medium-bodied flavors that are powerfully focused and detailed on the driving and equally explosive finish. Bid on this bottle of 2006 Dom Pérignon Brut Champagne (Gift Box - 97VN, 95WS) in gift box. Vinous: "The 2006 Dom Pérignon is a beautifully balanced, harmonious Dom Pérignon that strikes an incredibly appealing stylistic middle ground. Rich, voluptuous and creamy, the 2006 shows off fabulous intensity in a style that brings together the ripeness of 2002 with the greater sense of verve and overall freshness that is such a signature of the 2004. Bass notes and a feeling of phenolic grip on the finish recall the 2003, as the Pinot Noir is particularly expressive today. After an irregular summer that saw elevated temperatures in July followed by cooler, damp conditions in August, more favorable weather returned in September, pushing maturation ahead and leading to a long, protracted harvest. The 2006 falls into the family of riper, more voluptuous Dom Pérignons, but without veering into the level of opulence seen in vintages such as 2002. (AG)" (10/2015)

Every time I have this wine it is undeniable that Mouton made a richer, more persuasive wine in 1959 than in 1961. Astonishingly young and unevolved, with a black/purple color, the wine exhibits a youthful nose of cassis, minerals, and new oak. It is exceptionally powerful and super-extracted, with the fruit supported by high levels of tannin and some lusty quantities of alcohol. Broad, rich and intense on the palate, the wine has plenty of tannins, but they are sweet and well-integrated. Everything is delicately entwined into this beautiful, medium to full-bodied, dense purple wine, which shows stunning character and a prodigious potential for development. 1990 Montrose, St-Estèphe
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1990 Montrose, St-Estèphe (100RP, 95ST, 94WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The final blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc was harvested between September 14 and October 3. The spring was cold, yet summer was extremely hot and dry – one of the hottest vintages since 1949. The fact that virtually no rain fell in September served as a catalyst to get all the grapes ripe and in cellars....This wine has an incredibly complex nose of spring flowers, blackberry and cassis liqueur, scorched earth and barbecue spice. It is full-bodied, majestic and opulent, with low acidity and fabulous fruit. It is close to full maturity. The wine should continue to drink well for at least another 30 or more years, but it is showing secondary nuances in the perfume. The wine is absolutely magnificent, broad, savory and mouth-filling. This is one of the all-time modern legends from Bordeaux as well as Chateau Montrose." (08/2014)

Bid on this bottle of 1989 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac (99RP, 96WS, 95ST, 94JS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1989 has taken forever to shed its formidable tannins, but what a great vintage of Lynch Bages! I would rank it at the top of the pyramid... Its dense purple color reveals a slight lightening at the edge and the stunning bouquet offers classic notes of creme de cassis, subtle smoke, oak and graphite. Powerful and rich with some tannins still to shed at age 22, it is still a young adolescent in terms of its evolutionand will benefit from another 4-5 years of cellaring. It should prove to be a 50 year wine. (RP)" (08/2011)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Only recently released, the purple-colored 2010 Saumur-Champigny Les Poyeux attracts with a delicate and very elegant, though not over-concentrated, bouquet of floral and fruity aromas exhibiting Mediterranean herbs and very clear and coolish cherry and wild berry aromas along with cedar wood flour. Full-bodied, smooth, and intense, this absolutely delicate and elegant red is structured by the finest tannins and a delicious acidity that let this persistent wine sing on your palate. Krug "Grande Cuvée" Brut Champagne

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Krug’s NV Brut Grande Cuvee ID 112001 -- disgorged already over the winter of 2011-2012 but then further aged before release -- reinforces the belief that, thankfully, even wine lovers of modest means who occasionally splurge on Krug Grande Cuvee will be rewarded with a wine that need not fear comparison with this house’s more limited and far more expensive bottlings, nor for that matter with any other wines of Champagne. Our goal with these ratings is to provide a single, consistent point of view against which you may measure your own taste over time." Bollinger "Special Cuvee" Brut Champagne

93 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "*Outstanding* There is lovely complexity to the distinctly yeasty nose that combines high-toned green apple, pear, white flowers and gentle citrus nuances. The clean and sleek flavors are supported by a crisply firm but fine mousse where the finish is medium dry and lingering. It's not all that often that I suggest that readers cellar NV Brut but this is an example that absolutely cries out for it. I suspect that the texture will materially change for the better (i.e. become creamier) and better depth will be in the offing as well. Put it this way: this ...Read More »

Veuve Clicquot Brut Champagne (375ml)

Finishes on a gently spicy note, with very good cling and a touch of bitter lemon pith. Things have definitely begun to turn around for this bottling, which had been lagging behind the winery's vintage offerings for some time.
