French Wine

When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its regions, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and occasionally as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a 100 lives. To understand and appreciate French wine, you only need to begin tasting them. Check out some of the top picks that our buyers have tracked down - several of these wines are imported directly from France.

2011 Domaine de Montille Volnay 1er Cru "Les Taillepieds"
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2011 Domaine de Montille Volnay 1er Cru "Les Taillepieds" ((91-94BH), 90ST). Allen Meadows - Burghound: " *Sweet Spot Outstanding* There is enough reduction present to mask the nuances of the nose though the floral character does sneak past the funk. There is a wonderfully silky texture to the intense mineral and soil-inflected medium-bodied flavors that display really lovely delineation on the moderately austere and very firmly structured finish that delivers outstanding depth and length. This should improve for years to come and this is really most impressive." (04/2013)

1996 Domaine Michel Mallard Corton-Le Rognet Grand Cru
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 1996 Domaine Michel Mallard Corton-Le Rognet Grand Cru. From a family with five generations of winegrowers and winemakers. This wine comes from one of the best pieces of Le Corton, Le Rognet, from vines 45-55 years old. The soil is predominantly limestone, resulting in a minerally character to balance the fruit. Mallard ages this wine for 17-18 months in 70% new casks. Tasting notes from the winery: "Corton Grand Cru Rognet is a wine with hints of violet, blueberries, blackberries and blackcurrant with liquorice and pepper spices. It possesses a velvety, complex structure and impressive persistency. Can be aged for a surprisingly long time."

Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Always one of Faiveley's best wines and the '02 is no exception with an incredibly complex nose of damp earth, minerals, game and a slightly wild fruit component followed by wonderfully sappy, deep, broad, muscular flavors and knock-out purity of expression. I very much like this and the finish is long and strikingly persistent." (01/2004)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Corton displays a medium-to-dark ruby color, cassis and blackberry aromas as well as a thick, chewy, ripe, and medium-to-full-bodied personality. Sweet cherries, minerals, stones, and toasty oak flavors are ensconced in this wine's foursquare and tannic structure. (PR)" (10/1998)

1985 Maison Leroy Beaune
Bid on this bottle of 1985 Maison Leroy Beaune. Robert Parker wrote of Leroy: "Much has been written about the dynamic Madame Lalou Bize-Leroy. Some of it has been malicious and motivated strictly by insidious jealousy. From time to time I have complained of her pricing structure. Yet there should never be any criticism of her philosophy of what burgundy should be. Her wines are among the noblest and purest expressions of Pinot Noir in Burgundy. They are treated with the care of a pampered child, never filtered, and bottled barrel by barrel. Given the size of her wines and their power and structure, in a cool damp cellar they will last 20 to 25 years."

There is ample length here and this is clearly a lovely villages. Note: Maume said that a bottle opened a week before had no reduction but I would suggest decanting this for 20 minutes or so first if you wish to try one young." (01/2005)

Wine Spectator: " *#5 on Top 100 of 2008, Highly Recommended* This is dense and chewy, but not tiring to drink, thanks to fresh acidity and an edgy, gravelly feel that drives the blackberry, currant and sweet spice notes. The long finish has great briary grip, with notes of garrigue and hot stone checking in. Best from 2010 through 2030. (JM)" (04/2008)

1994 Margaux, Margaux
Bid on this bottle of 1994 Margaux, Margaux (91RP, (90-91ST), 90WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This largely forgotten vintage seems to have turned the corner in the last year or two. Because of strict selections made at the top chateaux, the wines always had density, but the level of tannin was frequently too high, and the type of tannin was more green and astringent. Chateau Margaux's 1994 has always been one of the candidates for the 'wine of the vintage.' The wine still has a dense plum/purple color and a big, sweet nose of black fruits intermixed with licorice, camphor, vanilla, and a hint of flowers. The wine is dense and powerful, but the tannins have softened and do not seem as hard and intrusive as they did in the late nineties. This wine will last for decades and hopefully become even more seamless, although it is hard to believe all the tannin will gradually dissipate. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2025. Allen Meadows - Burghound: " *Outstanding* Here there is a completely different aromatic expression with its nose of white peach, spiced pear and vague suggestion of the exotic that merges into textured and highly seductive flavors that possess a satiny mouth feel on the pure and energetic finish. This is a really wonderful effort with laser-like focus and a beguiling sense of overall harmony." (01/2011)

1994 Domaine Robert Arnoux Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru
Bid on this bottle of 1994 Domaine Robert Arnoux Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru. From the Burgundy Report: "Since 1858, five generations of Arnoux have been making wine in the Côte de Nuits. There is already a 6th generation waiting in the wings with the three sons of Pascal and Florence Lachaux. Pascal was working as a pharmacist specialising in homeopathy when he met Florence Arnoux, daughter of Robert; marriage and winemaking were soon to follow. 1993 Domaine Meo Camuzet Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru "Boudots"
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1993 Domaine Meo Camuzet Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru "Boudots". 90 points Robert Parker: The beautiful Nuits St.-Georges Les Boudots displays a dark ruby/purple color, full body, gobs of black fruits in the nose, intense flavor concentration, fine tannic structure, and excellent ripeness and length. It requires 2-4 years of cellaring and should drink well for 15 years. Meo-Camuzet's 1993s are unquestionably successes for the vintage. All the wines were bottled in April, 1995 without fining or filtration." (08/95) According to Clive Coates: "Very fine colour. Like his Corton this is a bit solid and tannic, but not as dense as it evolved. Full and austere but rather better mannered, better balanced and more classy. Yet, given the the vintage, not up to fine quality standard. Intense and with good grip but only very good indeed. " (The Vine, 08/01)

In the mouth, the wine is opulent and succulent, with medium to full body, superb depth of flavor, brilliant focus and delineation, as well as a round, generously endowed, velvety-textured finish. 2000 La Conseillante, Pomerol
Bid on this bottle of 2000 La Conseillante, Pomerol (96RP, 95WS, (90-93ST), 92JS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "La Conseillante made an excellent wine in 2001, another great one in 2005, and the estate hit home runs in both 2008 and, above all, in 2009. In fact, the latter vintage may well end up being the modern-day reference point for La Conseillante. Nevertheless, there’s a lot to be said for this 2000. An elegant, gentle style that is never a blockbuster, the 2000 La Conseillante has a deep ruby/plum/purple color and an unbelievably expressive nose of sweet kirsch liqueur intermixed with raspberries, incense, toast, and licorice. Full-bodied yet ethereal in the sense that it seems to combine power along with eloquence and delicacy, this is a beautifully pure wine that has just hit its plateau of full maturity, although ideally I think it would benefit strongly from another 4-5 years of bottle age and drink well for two to three decades. 1996 Pernin-Rossin Morey-St-Denis 1er Cru "Monts Luisants"
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 1996 Pernin-Rossin Morey-St-Denis 1er Cru "Monts Luisants". Robert Parker discussed the producer and his innovative methods in Wine Advocate: "They are not typical Burgundies: They have a rather purple hue to their color; intense, almost Côte-Rôtie-like bouquets of sweet raspberry fruit; and voluptuous, expansive, lush flavors. My friend Michel Bettane, an extraordinarily gifted taster and a writer for the Revue du Vin de France, considers these wines top class. Certainly Monsieur Pernin's prefermentation cold maceration of the grapes is the new rage in Burgundy-it results in wines with an incredible up-front perfume and glorious fruitiness." (01/1990)

Chave Hermitage Rouge, and 1-bottle of 1987 J.L. Chave Hermitage Rouge. Of the 1985 J.L. Chave Hermitage Rouge,Robert Parker's Wine Advocate writes: "Chave produced the best red Hermitage of this vintage. Yet for Chave 1985 was not a year he cares to remember. Holding back the tears, he sadly states that his beloved mother, as well as his faithful sidekick, his dog, passed away that year. A sentimentalist, Chave is likely to put little of this vintage into the huge reservoir of old vintages that his family has faithfully cellared throughout this century. His 1985 avoided the oversupple style of some of the other reds of this vintage. The wine's deep ruby color exhibits some lightening at the edge. The intense fragrance of smoked meat, cassis, and Provencal olives is followed by a rich, full-bodied, velvety-textured wine th

1994 Latour, Pauillac
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 1994 Latour, Pauillac (94RP, 91WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is an interesting as well as great vintage for Latour. As indicated in my barrel tasting report, Latour's 1994 possesses an atypically high percentage of Merlot (27%) in the final blend. Because of this, the wine appears to have a sweeter, more fleshy texture than is typical for a young Latour, but do not make the mistake of thinking this will be a commercially-styled, easy to drink wine. It exhibits an opaque dark ruby/purple color, and a backward, intense textbook nose of walnut and cassis scents complemented by smoky pain grille notes that build in the glass. This full-bodied, powerful, layered Latour reveals high tannin, but no bitterness or astringency. The superb purity, fabulous precision, and remarkable length should ensure 35-40 years of longevity. Fresh and delicate in the mouth, with refined tannins though a hint of overtly resinous woodiness, it finishes with tender refreshment and lingering, village-typical floral and animal intrigue. 2001 Domaine Jean Tardy Clos Vougeot Grand Cru "Grand Maupertuis"
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2001 Domaine Jean Tardy Clos Vougeot Grand Cru "Grand Maupertuis". Allen Meadows writes: "Jean Tardy and his son Guillaume run this small, traditional 5.5 ha domaine. Tardy is unique in that they are the last remaining sharecroppers for Domaine Méo-Camuzet (see above). The domaine leases a small parcel of Clos de Vougeot, a large one of Boudots and fully 1.5 ha of Chaumes. The terms of the métayage agreement require Tardy to deliver 50% of the crop to Méo at harvest time and he reports that the lease runs until 2007. They practice lutte raisonné (the practice of applying treatments only when a particular threat presents itself, rather than treating in advance - the theory is that the vines receive fewer treatments because not all threats materialize), short pruning and replant strictly by repiquage, or replacing individual vines rather than grubbing up parcels in their entirety; this keeps average vine age at its maximum though it's far more expensive to do.

The palate is absolutely seamless from first impression to finish, effortlessly building layers of complexity in the mouth and leading to a very long, earth and spice finish. A touch of roasted espresso bean is also present. The wine has great concentration, a magnificent, full-bodied mouthfeel, stunning purity, and well-integrated acidity, tannin, alcohol and wood. Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2000 La Mission Haut-Brion, Pessac-Léognan (100RP, 95JS, 95ST, 91WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the wines of the vintage, the 2000 has barely budged in its evolution since it was bottled and released in 2002. After ten years in bottle, it still reveals a dense opaque purple color along with a potentially sensational bouquet of blueberries, black currants, graphite, asphalt and background oak. Extremely powerful, full-bodied and superbly concentrated with good acidity and high but round tannins, this massive La Mission-Haut-Brion should take its place among this estate’s most hallowed vintages when it hits full maturity in another one to two decades. I was surprised by just how youthful this wine tasted at age 12. If tasted blind, I would have guessed it to be around 4 to 5 years old. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2050. (RP)" (08/2012)

Bid on this bottle of 2002 Ruinart "Dom Ruinart" Brut Rosé Champagne (96VN, 95JS, 95ST, 95W&S, 94WE, 94WS). Vinous: "A mysterious, beguiling beauty, the 2002 Dom Ruinart Rosé boasts fabulous intensity and pure resonance. Tangerine, exotic spices, mint, crushed rose petals and sweet red berries blossom in the glass. Still, my impression is that the 2002 is holding back much of its ultimate potential, as it remains tight and much less expressive than so many other wines of the year. When the 2002 finally emerges fully, it is going to be truly monumental. Disgorged September 2012. 96+ (AG)" (11/2014)

2001 Mommessin Clos de Tart Grand Cru
Bid on this bottle of 2001 Mommessin Clos de Tart Grand Cru (94RP, 93ST, 91BH). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2001 Clos de Tart is aging beautifully and is maturing into one of Sylvain Pitiot’s finest wines. Replicating its performance in 2010, it has a very expressive bouquet of vivacious red berry fruit: wild strawberry and raspberry, laced with minerals and dried rose petals. The palate is very well-balanced and full of succulent brambly red fruit. Perhaps it is moving into its secondary phase less slowly than I anticipated, with nuanced undergrowth notes developing toward the finish, which remains very fruit-driven and tense. There is a sense of style and class to this Clos de Tart, a grand cru bound to age with those same attributes over the following decade and beyond. Drink now-2024+. (NM)" (04/2014)

Another inky, purple/black-colored wine, the 1994 offers up heavenly scents of smoked meats, barbeque spices, hickory wood, and plenty of cassis and kirsch liqueur. The fruit's phenomenal purity and denseness, as well as its overall balance is admirable in view of the massive, muscular personality of this huge, full-bodied wine oozing with extract. Finishes with mouthcoating tannins and a peppery note. The top wine of St. Estephe in '97 based on my tastings this spring. (ST)" (06/1999)

An aromatic, almost herbaceous nose with greengage and honeysuckle - very complex. Palate is rich and fresh with notes of grass, apple and honey. This is a big, flamboyant champagne. Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A beautiful and complex nose offers up notes of dried flowers, spice, earth and a touch of animale along with secondary fruit aromas. There is good richness and detail to the medium-bodied, delicious and solidly complex flavors that possess fine verve on the balanced, persistent and satisfying finish. This is drinking perfectly now and while there is a bit of underlying tannin remaining, this is at its peak. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A remarkable vintage for Pichon Longueville Baron, 1990 is one of this estate’s two or three finest wines made in the last 40 years. Still inky/blue/purple-tinged to the rim, it reveals an extraordinary bouquet of charcoal, incense, creme de cassis, blue and black fruits, and a hint of licorice as well as an impressively long finish. While drinkable, its evolution is extremely slow, and I would not be surprised to see it last another two decades or more." (06/2009)

The Reignots had not been racked so had a slightly leesy nose, very good definition, floral with touches of peony and violets. Great purity once again. The palate still has some CO2, but appears to have great depth, very supple, lavished in new oak but in proportion to the level of fruit. Its dense purple color reveals a slight lightening at the edge and the stunning bouquet offers classic notes of creme de cassis, subtle smoke, oak and graphite. Powerful and rich with some tannins still to shed at age 22, it is still a young adolescent in terms of its evolutionand will benefit from another 4-5 years of cellaring. A wine of amazing purity and elegance, it reverberates on the palate revealing broad layers of floral dark fruit flavors. Lush yet superbly delineated, this medium-bodied effort is expressive, complex, and dignified. Its prolonged, succulent finish exhibits waves of raspberry fruit and loads of ripe, supple tannin. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1990 Leroy Vosne-Romanée "Beaux Monts" (98RP, 95WS, 92BH). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Vosne-Romanee-Les Beaumonts is a more subtle, more classic example of a top premier cru Vosne-Romanee. It does not soar from the glass with the exotic, smoky, roasted character of the Les Brulees, but it does offer authoritative and persistent aromas of black fruits, herbs, underbrush, and sweet oak. While it displays exceptional concentration of flavor in the mouth, it is supported by higher levels of tannin and is a more structured, denser, richer wine than the Les Brulees. Since the tannins are more noticeable, it should be cellared for 7-8 years, and should last for 30 or more. This profound wine is one of the superstars of the vintage." (10/1992)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: " Tasted alongside the 2001 Clos Saint Jacques, the 2001 Chambertin Grand Cru possesses an ethereal, floral bouquet of raspberry jam, Morello cherries, minerals and undergrowth, gaining in intensity all the time in the glass. The palate is very natural and refined, in no way a powerful Chambertin, rather one of finesse, grace and purity. Divine. Drink now-2026. Tasted January 2014. (NM)" (04/2014)

Dark cherries, plums, wild berries, spices and licorice are woven together beautifully in this highly expressive, singular wine. A cool vein of minerality is a common thread as the wine continues to take shape in the glass. There is a beguiling, mysterious quality to the finish I find highly attractive. Bid on this 12-bottle lot of 2009 Léoville-Poyferré, St-Julien (OWC - 100RP, 96JS, 96WE, 95ST, 93WS) in original wood. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the more flamboyant and sumptuous wines of the vintage, this inky/purple-colored St.-Julien reveals thrilling levels of opulence, richness and aromatic pleasures. A soaring bouquet of creme de cassis, charcoal, graphite and spring flowers is followed by a super-concentrated wine with silky tannins, stunning amounts of glycerin, a voluptuous, multilayered mouthfeel and nearly 14% natural alcohol. Displaying fabulous definition for such a big, plump, massive, concentrated effort, I suspect the tannin levels are high even though they are largely concealed by lavish amounts of fruit, glycerin and extract. 1986 Léoville-Las-Cases, St-Julien
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1986 Léoville-Las-Cases, St-Julien (100RP, 97ST, 95WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The late Michel Delon always thought that this was the greatest vintage he had produced. We often tasted it side by side with the 1982, because I always preferred the latter vintage. Of course, the two vintages are quite different in style, with the 1986 a monument to classicism, with great tannin, extraordinary delineation, and a huge, full-bodied nose of sweet, ripe cassis fruit intermixed with vanilla, melon, fruitcake, and a multitude of spices. The wine has always been phenomenally concentrated, yet wonderfully fresh and vigorous. The wine still seems young, yet it is hard to believe it is not close to full maturity. It is a great example of Leoville Las Cases, and another compelling reason to take a serious look at the top Cabernet Sauvignon-based Medocs of 1986. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2035. Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Sexy aromas of ripe peach, smoke and minerals; less enveloping on the nose than the Chassagne premier crus in much the same way as the 2006s are. Then elegant and pure in the mouth, with suave flavors of peach and spice. Nicely ripe but not at all overdone. The finish is tactile, saline, intense and classically dry. No rot here, notes Morey. Bid on this bottle of 2004 Mouton Rothschild, Pauillac (94JS, 94W&S, 93VN, 93WS, 92ST, 90RP). James Suckling: "I drank this 2004 Chateau Mouton-Rothschild the other night at home with some wine producers. I decanted it only right before serving - a mistake made while concentrating on the cooking food. On the nose there were coffee and chocolate aromas with hints of vanilla. It was super fruity, and its medium body was coupled with beautifully soft tannins. This is just coming around now and it's very New World in style. Overall, a much overlooked vintage from Mouton." 1985 Maison Leroy d'Auvenay Bourgogne Rouge
Bid on this bottle of 1985 Maison Leroy d'Auvenay Bourgogne Rouge. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Much has been written about the dynamic Madame Lalou Bize-Leroy. Given the size of her wines and their power and structure, in a cool damp cellar they will last 20 to 25 years. Bize-Leroy thinks 1985 is one of the two best burgundy vintages in the last twenty years, the other being 1978. Given the range of wines I tasted, 44 in all, 16 were exceptional, 21 very good to excellent. Thirty-seven very good to exceptional wines out of 44 is an amazingly high percentage, and I would be proud to own

The integration of the tannin and firm, currantlike fruit creates the wine's beauty for now, compelling for its balance of freshness and concentration. Pascal was working as a pharmacist specialising in homeopathy when he met Florence Arnoux, daughter of Robert; marriage and winemaking were soon to follow. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The first offering in what turned out to be a remarkable decade for this property, the 2000 Clos Fourtet was the finest wine produced here in many years, but it was subsequently eclipsed by the 2003, 2005, 2008, and 2009. The dense plum/purple-tinged 2000 exhibits notes of wet rocks, camphor, blackberries, and cassis. Full-bodied with tremendous density, it appears to have shed much of its tannin, and is through its adolescent stage. It should continue to evolve effortlessly for another decade. (RP)" (06/2010)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2002 Léoville-Poyferré, St-Julien (90RP, 90ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This wine has completely shut down since it’s been bottled but exhibits a saturated ruby/purple color, high levels of tannin, and sweet, noble black currant fruit intermixed with some licorice, espresso roast, and pain grille. In the vernacular, it is closed for business, with medium to full body, high levels of tannin, and good acidity in a more structured, classic style than the 2003. Gaining richness in the glass, it’s a full-bodied, beautifully concentrated Gigondas the perfectly marries the inherent structure of the appellation with a sense of finesse and elegance. This outstanding terroir, elevated to Premier Grand Cru Classe status in St.-Emilion’s reclassification, is run with impeccable attention to detail by Nicolas Thienpont, who is assisted by winemaking guru, Stephane Derenoncourt. The 2005 Pavie Macquin may turn out to be this duo’s finest wine to date. This is a moderately large vineyard (37 acres) for the area, and the blend tends to be 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. A black/purple color is accompanied by aromas of charcoal, burning embers, crushed rocks, sweet, pure, blueberries and blackberries, chocolaty creme de cassis, and licorice. Allen Meadows - Burghound: "***Outstanding*** Now that the vines are beginning to mature, the Clos des Perrières is almost always the best wine in the cellar with its wonderfully elegant, pure and refined white flower and white peach nose complementing perfectly the mineral-driven and equally pure medium-bodied flavors that possess good dry extract levels and offering even more power and length, all while maintaining impeccable focus and balance. I especially like the transparency of the linear and vibrant finish." (07/2007)

2003 Domaine Faiveley Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru
Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 2003 Domaine Faiveley Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru ((92-95BH), 93ST). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "This may be the most aromatically complex wine today with noticeable wood spice that remains a background element, framing flat out gorgeous ripe pinot fruit and deep, rich and expressive plum and earth notes of superb nuance. The flavors are classic Mazis with that unmistakable sauvage character running the length of the wine and a massive level of dry extract that renders the flavors almost thick yet there is nothing heavy or inelegant about it. This will last for 3 decades, perhaps longer and will certainly require plenty of bottle age before it's ready for prime time but this is a great Mazis of Herculean proportions." (01/2005)

1990 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac
Bid on this 5-bottle lot of 1990 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac (99RP, 94WS, 93ST, 93VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This magnificent Lynch Bages has been drinking well since the day it was released and it continues to go from strength to strength. The biggest, richest, fullest-bodied Lynch Bages until the 2000, the fully mature 1990 exhibits an unbelievably explosive nose of black currants, cedarwood, herbs and spice. The majestic, classically Bordeaux aromatics are followed by a full-bodied, voluptuously textured, rich, intense wine with superb purity as well as thrilling levels of fruit, glycerin and sweetness. This beauty should continue to provide immense pleasure over the next 15+ years. (RP)" (08/2011)

Allen Meadows - Burghound: "In what is also rare for the 2000 vintage, there is strikingly pure Gevrey character and without the ultra ripe, roasted earth and torrefaction notes so many wines display. Structured, dense, intense and long with solid acid/fruit balance and ripe tannins that come up on the moderately long finish. A quality villages." (01/2003)

Wine Enthusiast: "Jean-Louis, the son of Gérard Chave, is now in charge of the family business, as well as being president of the Hermitage wine producers. He is continuing the family tradition of making powerful statements of Syrah from Hermitage, combining massive structure and over-powering perfumes. This 1999 seems to have the best of the traditional world of tannic immensity and the modern world of beautiful, ripe fruit. A wine that will age for a very long time." (06/2002)

2000 Margaux, Margaux
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2000 Margaux, Margaux (100JS, 100RP, 98ST, 98W&S, 98WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Absolutely compelling in two tastings of this vintage, the 2000 Margaux is composed of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot. The extraordinary seductiveness, complex aromatics, and purity it exhibits lead me to believe it has reached its window of full maturity. Medium-bodied, with layers of concentration, stunning blue, red, and black fruits intermixed with spring flowers, a subtle dosage of new oak, and a distinctive personality that is elegant while at the same time powerful and substantial, this is a multi-dimensional wine that was extremely approachable and drinkable in both tastings I had of it. The color remains a healthy, even opaque bluish/purple, but there is no reason to hesitate to drink it. It should evolve for another 30-40 years, so there is no hurry either. (RP)" (06/2010)

1982 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1982 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac (100RP, 98WS, 95ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the monumental wines of the last century is the 1982 Pichon Lalande. Since bottling, it has flirted with perfection, and was a sprinter out of the gate, which gave rise to questions about how quickly it would begin its decline. However, at age 27, it retains all its glossy, rich, flamboyant cassis fruit, chocolaty, berry jam-like notes, and plenty of earthy, foresty flavors. This is a full-bodied, extravagantly rich Pichon Lalande seemingly devoid of acidity and tannin, but the wine is incredibly well-balanced and pure. It is an amazing effort! (RP)" (06/2009)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2010 Chablis Les Clos Clos des Hospices adds some of the textural richness found in the Valmur with the delicacy and salinity of Les Clos. Smoke, graphite, crushed rocks and licorice are some of the many notes that add complexity on the textured, caressing finish. This is another standout from Moreau. Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2012 Domaine de Courcel Pommard 1er Cru "Grand Clos des Épenots" (93BH, 92ST, 92WS, 90RP). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "***Outstanding*** This is also markedly ripe yet not quite as ripe as the Fremiers with its array of both red and dark currant, black cherry, tobacco and warm earth aromas that are trimmed in noticeable wood. There is fine detail and reasonably good punch to the lush and very round medium-bodied flavors that also display a hint of mocha. This too is a big and overtly powerful Pommard yet it avoids being top heavy. Note that I would strongly suggest that this not even be considered before it has at least 10 years of bottle age." The medium-bodied and very appealingly textured medium-bodied flavors possess excellent mid-palate concentration and fine volume all the while preserving the silky mouth feel on the firm, precise and solidly persistent finish. Bid on this magnum lot of 1996 Krug Brut Champagne (1.5L) (OWC - 100W&S, 99ST, 99WS, 97RP) in original wood. Wine & Spirits: "It's hard to imagine how a wine of this power can sustain perfect balance. What is now a more nonchalant intensity in the aroma was, in fact, too much to handle when we tasted this last year, as if the wine had no time for mere humans with their limited sense receptors. If you stop to taste ripe pear, ginger spice, apple blossom and butterscotch the wine leaves you lost in random flavor descriptors as it soars off into a vinous glow that lasts for minutes. This may well be the greatest vintage wine of Henri Krug's career (unless it is challenged by the 2002). It is impossible to predict how long this wine will thrive in bottle, though considering the current fine condition of the 1959 Krug, the first 50 years are a given." (12/2008)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2012 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras comes from 0.68-hectares of vines around 70-years old. It has a refined bouquet that contains the most finesse this year – just everything perfectly in place on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied, very tense with life-affirming mineralite. The terroir is succinctly articulated and the finish is long and penetrating. This Les Cras has a structure that is almost severe, yet still compelling on its uncompromising stony finish. This is outstanding – but one for hardcore Chambolle aficionados! (NM)" (12/2013)

This has a lovely voluminous palate adorned with immense precision, fresh acidity and lovely tension and race toward the finish. 1990 Noel Verset Cornas
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1990 Noel Verset Cornas (94ST, 93RP). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "At the time of its release I thought that Verset's 1990 Cornas was one of the best wines of the vintage in the northern Rhône and definitely the best example of Cornas for that year. Still deep ruby in color, it displays powerful aromas of cherry liqueur, blackberry and olive, with a minty aspect adding vivacity and lift. Round and seamless in texture, with sappy red and dark berry flavors and hints of spicecake and cola, this is aging very slowly and positively. A hint of fresh mint sneaks up with air, adding good back end bite to a long, supple finish. In an ample, plush style for Verset, you could drink this with great pleasure now or forget it for at least another ten years." (01/2015)

It has classic cassis and blackberry fruit, bacon fat, violets and herbs to go with a full-bodied, layered and seamless, if not voluptuous, style on the palate. The palate is full bodied, well defined with exquisite balance and purity. Like the 2005, there is a minerality here that lends the wine character. Touch of bitter cherry lingers on the after taste. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2002 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac (94RP, (91-94ST), 91WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the best wines of the vintage, this is a classic Pauillac that is a blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Petit Verdot. Dense ruby/purple in color with a glorious nose of melted licorice, lavender, barbecue smoke, black currants, and graphite, the wine is tannic, classically structured with an opaque ruby/purple color, beautiful definition, and a 1996-ish personality. This deep, full-bodied, elegant yet powerful 2002 should age handsomely for over two decades. Some patience will be required since this vintage exhibits more muscle and virility than normal. Thick and unctuous on the palate, it has put on weight since release, and the tannin is also sweeter and more polished, all suggesting it will have a long life. Bid on this bottle of 2002 Domaine de Montille Volnay 1er Cru "Les Taillepieds" ((92-94BH), 91ST, 90WS). Allen Meadows - Burghound: " *Outstanding* Incredibly dense black fruit of remarkable complexity gives way to what may be the most concentrated mid-palate of the entire range with spicy, pure, deep, broad, indeed almost masculine flavors that possess absolutely stunning length. A great Taillepieds in the making and while the tannins are abundant and prominent, they are also fine. In short, this is a real stunner of a wine that should age for years and may very well be the Taillepieds of the vintage. " (04/2004)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A huge, complete wine, the 2010 Chevalier-Montrachet Les Demoiselles boasts stunning inner perfume and layers of expressive fruit, all supported by veins of minerality that occasionally appear hidden by the wine’s sheer stuffing. In 2010, the Demoiselles impresses for its verticality, fabulous overall balance and completeness. It is another wine that should handsomely repay cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2020. Bid on this bottle of 2005 E. Guigal "Château d'Ampuis" Côte-Rotie (96RP, 94WS, 93VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "More masculine, backwards and concentrated, the 2005 Cote Rotie Chateau d’Ampuis is a full-bodied, structured effort that’s just barely starting to show some secondary nuances. Giving up notions of violet, asphalt, graphite, crushed rock, bacon fat and dried rose petal, it has impeccable balance, notable concentration and a big finish. It should hit prime time in another 2 to 3 years, and evolve gracefully through 2025. 96+ Points (JD)" (08/2014)

Allen Meadows - Burghound: "As it always is, this is a clear step up in quality and elegance with its airy and pure white flower and spiced pear nose giving way to minerally, precise and intense flavors that are already delicious yet there is a certain reserve to the fleshy, opulent and generous finish that should allow this to improve over the next 3 to 5 years. This is not as elegant as the Clos but I like the power and length here. Recommended." (07/2007)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The spectacular 2003 Leoville Poyferre exhibits a dense purple color with a touch of lightening at the edge as well as notes of creosote, barbecue smoke, jammy black currants, licorice and spice box. This intense, voluptuously textured, full-bodied St.-Julien possesses low acidity and ripe tannin. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The dense purple-colored 2001 Ermitage Le Meal reveals aromas of blackberry liqueur, smoke, licorice, and toasty oak. While rich, it is neither as expansive nor as broad compared to the 2000. The 2001 possesses good acidity and delineation in addition to a tight, pinched but impressive finish that lasts for 40-45 seconds. The wine is medium to full-bodied, quite tannic, powerful, and one of the more backward wines I have tasted at this estate. The inky/garnet/plum/purple-colored 1990 exhibits notes of coffee, blackberries, licorice, camphor, and espresso. Rich, layered and voluptuous in the glass, the 2002 shows off its flamboyant personality with flair. Butter, cooked apple and tropically-leaning fruits mesh together effortlessly. Interestingly, with time in the glass the 2002 gains in freshness and energy without losing its essential opulence. The elevated ripeness of the year gives the 2002 Dom Pérignon distinctly Puligny-Montrachet leaning inflections...This is yet another fabulous showing from the 2002, which continues to cement its reputation as a truly epic Dom Pérignon." Pascal was working as a pharmacist specialising in homeopathy when he met Florence Arnoux, daughter of Robert; marriage and winemaking were soon to follow. This expansive wine is silky, rich, very generously flavored, long, and full bodied on the palate. It is fully mature, but there is little chance of this wine falling apart for at least another decade. I have high hopes that the 1982, 1983, and 1986 will ultimately surpass this vintage of Margaux. Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2010 Domaine Hudelot Noellat Vosne Romanee 1er Cru "Les Beaux Monts" ((92-94RP), (91-93BH)). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2010 Vosne-Romanee Les Beaux Monts blossoms on the palate with tons of class and finesse. I especially like the restrained style, but at the same time there is no shortage of personality and depth in this totally sexy, voluptuous Beaux Monts. Persistent saline notes lend brightness to the well-articulated finish. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2030. Once again this year I tasted with Charles Van Canneyt, Alain Hudelot’s grandson. Yields were down 30% across the board, a significant drop but not terrible considering the year. 1982 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1982 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac (100JS, 100RP, 98ST, 98WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This wine remains one of the legends of Bordeaux. It has thrown off the backward, youthful style that existed during its first 25 years of life, and over the last 4-5 years has developed such secondary nuances as cedar and spice box. The creme de cassis, underlying floral note, full-bodied power, extraordinary purity, multilayered texture, and finish of over a minute are a showcase for what this Chateau accomplished in 1982. The wine is still amazingly youthful, vibrant, and pure. It appears capable of remaining fruity and vibrant in 2082! Thank God it is beginning to budge, as I would like to drink most of my supply before I kick the bucket. This is a great, still youthful wine, and, on occasion, one does understand the hierarchy of Bordeaux chateaux when you see the complexity and brilliance of this first-growth. (RP)" (06/2009)

Layers of perfume meld seamlessly into the most expressive fruit imaginable, all supported by firm yet utterly impeccable tannins. There is just one barrel of the Bonnes-Mares in the Boillot cellars, which is a shame as this is shaping up to be one of the wines of the vintage. Readers who can find it should not hesitate. Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2005 Geantet-Pansiot Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru (94RP, (90-93BH), 92ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "From a rocky, thinly-soiled spot in the “true” Charmes (rather than the sometimes equally grand but distinctive Mazoyeres that can also be sold as “Charmes”), the Geantet-Pansiot 2005 Charmes Chambertin delivers a lovely meld of bright cherry, beef marrow, cocoa powder, and chalk. A typically sleek, polished, long-lined performance for this appellation at its best, this isn’t a wine with lots of nooks and crannies. There is a superb sweetness and clarity of finishing fruit along with a vibrant if hard to describe mineral note. There could scarcely be a more stark contrast in microclimate or vinous character between this wine and the Poissenot. (DS)" (06/2007)

Its wines, mostly made from Pinot Noir, are highly sought-after and known for their silky finesse. Jean-Marie Fourrier took over his family estate in 1994 aged just 23. He worked with the legendary Henri Jayer in Vosne-Romanée in the late 1980s. The latter's influence is reflected in the domaine's fastidious approach in the vineyard and minimal intervention in the winery. Following in the manner of Henri Jayer, grapes are destemmed very carefully and are not crushed before fermentation, limiting extraction of color and tannins from the skin. Natural yeasts are used and punch-downs are done by hand. Fourrier's wines are aged for around 16-20 months, usually with just a small portion of new oak, and the wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered.

2007 Domaine du Pégaü "Cuvée da Capo" Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2007 Domaine du Pégaü "Cuvée da Capo" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (100RP, 96ST, 96WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "For the fourth time, the Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee da Capo has been produced, and for the fourth time, it has received a perfect score although I might back off the 2000's perfect score based on the fact that it seems to be more of an upper-ninety point wine than pure perfection these days. The 2007 may come closest in style to the 1998, the debut vintage, although the tannins are sweeter and the wine is perhaps fatter and richer in the mouth... An inky/purple color is followed by aromas of smoked meats, Peking duck, licorice, lavender, aged beef, grilled steak blood, black currants, plums, sauteed cepes and soy. Enormously concentrated, broad, expansive and massive but not over the top, this is a tour de force in winemaking that is impossible to imagine unless one has a bottle to work through over the course of 4 to 5 hours ... 2000 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Bid on this 5-bottle lot of 2000 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape (95RP, 91ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape reveals 14.6% alcohol, and is stylistically similar to the great 1990. The 2000 is open-knit and fat, with higher levels of glycerin as well as a more corpulent style than the structured, backward 2001. A deep ruby/purple color is followed by sweet, black cherry/kirsch liqueur-like notes presented in a voluptuous, full-throttle, intense style. It is already revealing such secondary nuances as pepper, garrigue, and truffles. Chewy, full-bodied, and moderately tannic, this cuvee is accessible, but not ready to drink. (JD)" (02/2003)

Bid on this 3-half-bottle lot of 1996 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac (375ml) (100RP, 96ST, 95WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: " ...The wine exhibits a thick-looking, ruby/purple color, and a knock-out nose of lead pencil, minerals, flowers, and black currant scents. Extremely powerful and full-bodied, with remarkable complexity for such a young wine, this huge Lafite is oozing with extract and richness, yet has managed to preserve its quintessentially elegant personality. This wine is even richer than it was prior to bottling. It should unquestionably last for 40-50 years. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2050. The wine of the vintage? (RP)" (04/1999)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2007 Roger Sabon "Secret de Sabon" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (100RP, 96ST, 93WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Le Secret du Sabon is jaw-dropping good, and tops out on my scale. Crazily perfumed and complex, with layers of kirsch, crushed flowers, incense, beef blood and garrigue, it hits the palate with massive depth and richness, thrilling purity of fruit and a seamless texture that needs to be tasted to be believed. I'd happily drink bottles today, but given its mid-palate depth and no shortage of tannin that emerges on the finish, it will have no issues evolving through 2027. (JD)" (08/2014)

1990 Auguste Clape Cornas
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1990 Auguste Clape Cornas (91RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Clape's 1990 Cornas is outstanding. The color is an opaque black/purple, and the nose offers up rich, ripe aromas of black fruits, licorice, and spices. Superconcentrated, with a full-bodied, highly extracted, mouth-filling taste, this example of Cornas possesses moderate tannin, adequate acidity, and a smashingly long finish. It is also relatively refined for a Cornas, displaying no signs of the rustic tannin or funky, earthy smells many Cornas can possess. (RP)" (01/1997)

1988 Domaine Arlaud Père et Fils Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1988 Domaine Arlaud Père et Fils Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru. Located east of the Grand Cru Chambertin, the wines of Charmes-Chambertin are known for being highly fragrant in their youth, with a slightly softer character. From North Berkeley Imports: "Domaine Arlaud is a very important address on the road to discovering Burgundy. For those already familiar with the region, Arlaud wines are an inviting next step to truly understanding the best Burgundy can give. The estate's signature aromas and flavors of each cru expand into variations on a theme. In the glass, the wines’ perfumes evolve from raspberries and red roses to blueberries and irises. Flavors and textures remind of the sweet pulp of warmed blueberries. The family's natural winemaking -- certified organic/biodynamic -- is no frivolous claim. Their leading organic role, supported by disciplined vineyard practices, has also influenced how the best estates in Burgundy tend their own fields."

Its saturated ruby/purple color is followed by sumptuous aromas of cedar wood, creme de cassis, wood smoke, coffee, and dried herbs. The wine is forward, lush, and full-bodied. It is already complex as well as succulent, fleshy, and long. Tannin in the finish suggests more nuances will emerge in 4-5 years. It is a complex, classic Mouton. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2030." It is full-bodied and fabulously concentrated as well as powerful, with a finish that lasts for fifty seconds. This saturated black/purple-colored 1999 exhibits remarkable symmetry, purity, and overall massive size all juxtaposed with a sense of elegance and restraint. The wine has an inky, opaque, plum/purple color and a stunningly rich nose of mulberries, bramble berries, blackberries, licorice and incense as well as touches of toast and graphite. Fabulously concentrated and full-bodied, with a multidimensional mouthfeel, this profound Pavie is in mid-adolescence. It should evolve and continue to drink well for at least another 30-40 years. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2002 Domaine Nicolas Rossignol Volnay 1er Cru "Caillerets". Like many of Nicolas' wines, this is not bottled as domaine grown, not, however, because he buys wine from someone else. On the contrary, it is because he is a sharecropper. He could legally bottle 1/2 of the wine from this vineyard, and call it Domaine Rossignol. But the other, identical half, belongs to the vineyard owner, and he has to buy the wine he grew and made from them. To do so, he has to have a negociant's license and then can only sell the wine as a negociant wine, even though he grew the grapes, made the wine, bottled the wine, and sold it. Ah, the joys of French law. Or as they say in Burgundy, La Douce France. (Keith Wollenberg, K&L Burgundy buyer) And Clive Coates writes: "Fragrant, plump and stylish. Very elegant. Medium full body. Cool and composed. Very good acidity. This is fat, round and ample. Quite fat. Long. Very good indeed." (The Vine, 02/004)

Indeed this is unusually powerful for an Aux Charmes as the character is more what its name suggests, e.g. agreeable and round rather than robust and muscled. Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2010 Château Sixtine (Cuvée du Vatican) Châteauneuf-du-Pape (OWC - 96RP, 94WS, 92ST) in original wood. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2010 Chateau Sixtine Chateauneuf du Pape performed exquisitely and, again, was one of the top wines of the vintage. With better integration of the new oak than I have previously seen from Jean-Marc Diffonty, this wine's opaque ruby/purple color possesses lots of licorice, asphalt, graphite, blackberry and kirsch notes as well as hints of lavender, forest floor and garrigue. This opulent, full-bodied effort is approachable, but it will not hit its full stride for another 2-4 years. It should drink well for 15-20 years thereafter. This is one of Chateauneuf du Pape's ancient estates (the recorded history dates back to 1673), long owned by the Diffonty family (presently by Jean-Marc). Their first Chateauneuf du Pape was sold under the estate name in 1902. Jean-Marc is an innovative visionary and when he took over for his f

Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2007 Chante Cigale Châteauneuf-du-Pape "Vieilles Vignes" (95RP, 92VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The compelling 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes (78% Grenache and the rest Syrah and Mourvedre) is made from 60- to 120-year-old vines. Its dense plum/purple hue is followed by knock-out aromas of incense, crushed pepper, cedar, black currant jam, licorice, and sweet cherries. Voluptuously textured, opulent, and round with well-formed, moderately high tannins that are nearly covered by the wine’s fruit and glycerin, it will easily last 15-20 years in a cold, damp cellar. I wish I saw more of these wines in the marketplace as I have been a big fan of this estate since I first tasted their 1978s." (10/2009)

Allen Meadows - Burghound: "***Outstanding*** A pretty blend of mostly red pinot fruit aromas also reflect minor notes of warm earth and a gamy character that precede fresh, intense, dusty and attractively mineral-inflected middle weight flavors that are impressively balanced and admirably long. This is recommended." (01/2008)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Showing the quality of the vintage, the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape is an incredible wine. Possessing the classic kirsch liqueur, incense, flowers and licorice aromas and flavors that always show here, it flows onto the palate with a jaw dropping good texture that carries massive amounts of fruit, beautiful mid-palate concentration and a layered, silky feel. Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2000 Domaine de la Charbonniere "Les Hauts Brusquieres Cuvée Speciale" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (94RP, 90ST, 90WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Speciale Les Hautes Brusquieres, all from a single vineyard parcel planted high on the plateau of Chateauneuf du Pape, behind the village, is made from 100% destemmed Grenache (60%) and Syrah (40%). Malolactic fermentation occurs in both foudre and barrel, and more new oak is utilized. In contrast to the 2001, the 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Hautes Brusquieres possesses a dense ruby/purple color and pungent, peppery, garrigue aromas intermixed with blackberry, raspberry, and cherry fruit characteristics. This full-bodied offering boasts layers of glycerin, sensational purity, and admirable ripeness. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The fabulous 2007 Châteauneuf-du-Pape (a blend of 64% Grenache, 19% Syrah, 15% Mourvedre, and the rest Cinsault and Vaccarese) boasts a deep plum/ruby/purple color as well as a super expressive perfume that represents the essence of Provence. Fresh bouquet garni, roasted Provencal herbs, licorice, black cherries, and black currant aromas soar from the glass of this full-bodied, incredibly deep, savory wine. Juicy and succulent with terrific acidity, freshness, and length, it is accessible now, and should continue to drink well for 12-15 or more years. Bravo to the Cazes family! This 60+ acre estate was acquired by the Cazes family (proprietors of Château Lynch-Bages in Pauillac) in late 2006. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "From proprietor Jonathan Maltus, this blend of three terroirs, two on sand and one on gravel, is a blend of 92% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc. About 2,000 cases are produced, and the prodigious 2009 is the finest vintage to date. Inky blue/purple, with notes of licorice, camphor, black truffle, blackberry and blueberry, this full-bodied wine has massive concentration yet at the same time displays elegance and harmony. A remarkable effort from winemaking guru Jean-Guillaume Prats and owner Michel Reybier, this blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot (33%) and a touch of Cabernet Franc (2%) was cropped at 33 hectoliters per hectare. It boasts an inky/black/purple color along with an extraordinary bouquet of white flowers interwoven with blackberry and blueberry liqueur, incense, charcoal and graphite. The wine hits the palate with extraordinary purity, balance and intensity as well as perfect equilibrium, and a seamless integration of tannin, acidity, wood and alcohol. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is a denser version of the 1990 that stylistically reminds me of what the young 1959 probably tasted like. Still backward with a deep ruby/plum color revealing only a touch of lightening at the edge, the wine offers up an extraordinary nose of caramelized herbs, smoke, cedar, pen ink, black currants, and earth. The gorgeous aromatics are followed by a full-bodied, plump, rich, fleshy wine with low acidity. Knockout nose offers musky, wild red berries, truffle and dried flowers, plus a balsamic nuance. Voluminous, tactile and deep; wonderfully generous and full, with the sweetness of fruit to give great pleasure right now. The very long finish features big but fine-grained tannins. This is remarkably fresh considering the bottle format; in fact, Michel Lafarge noted that the same wine from 750s was still closed. A blend of 53% Merlot and 47% Cabernet Franc, the wine has a sweet nose of menthol, melted licorice, boysenberry, blueberry, and cassis. A broad wine with compelling purity, a layered texture, and sweet tannin, with hints of coffee and earth in the background, this is by far the best Cheval Blanc since 1990 and before 2009. It is a legend in the making and can actually be drunk now, as the tannins have nearly melted away. This is a beauty with incredibly complex aromatics. Drink it over the next 25-30 years. It was emotional tasting this wine, thinking of the late Christine Valette, who made this compelling wine while battling with considerable courage against an insidious disease. It is a great effort and a superstar of the vintage. Dense purple, it offers notes of white chocolate, blackberry, cassis and licorice as well as a hint of truffle and some subtle background oak. Full-bodied, multi-layered, and spectacularly pure and rich, it is a tour de force, and a great tribute to an incredible woman. Dense purple in color, with loads of coffee, mocha, creme de cassis, and chocolate notes, this is a somewhat unusual blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, and a whooping 10% Petit Verdot, with a little bit of Cabernet Franc.
