2002 Gosset "Celebris" Vintage Extra Brut Champagne Top Pick!
2002 Gosset "Celebris" Vintage Extra Brut Champagne

96 points Vinous: "Magnificent in its complexity and pure breeding, the 2002 Extra Brut Celebris has it all. The Extra Brut style confers the signature Gosset drive, while extended time on the lees has given the wine just enough texture and body to fill out nicely. In the meantime, the aromas and flavors have mellowed into those that are typical of Champagne entering the first plateau of its maturity. The 2002 is vinous, fleshy and super-expressive, yet retains striking freshness throughout. Candied lemon peel, apricot jam, honey, mint, spices and sage form a compelling fa ...Read More »

2002 Pol Roger "Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill" Brut Champagne

98 points Wine Enthusiast: "*Editors' Choice* With its gold color and mature, toasty flavors, this is possibly the greatest Winston Churchill ever. It has weight and richness, with a dense, full and rich texture. It’s in perfect balance, bringing together maturity and crisper apple and green plum fruit flavors that are cut with lemon. A mineral edge gives a nervy character that will allow this magnificent wine to age further. (RV)" (3/2015) 97 points James Suckling: "Fabulous aromas of dried apple, cream, mango and ginger follow through to a full, dense palate, but it’s very fine. The bead is so, so fine. The ...Read More »

It is poised generously between the fresh and mature ..." (12/2015) 93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Vivid yellow. Intense aromas of Meyer lemon, pear skin, honeysuckle, toasty lees and iodine, with a bright mineral quality adding lift and focus. Rich yet lively and precise, offering an array of fresh citrus and orchard fruit flavors that fill out and deepen with air. 2002 Thienot "Cuvée Alain Thiénot" Brut Champagne

Precious few 2002's are available these days- grab one of these when you can! This classy vintage Champagne is composed of 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir. Like all of the Thiénot vintage wines, this bottling is entirely estate grown from the family's nearly seventy acres of vines. The Alain Thiénot has so much aroma that I thought it would be a giant Champagne from smelling the walnut bread and dark cherry fruit that was jumping from the glass. On the palate this is a very balanced wine with great clarity of flavor and a light bead. The long aging of ... Read More »

2002 Billecart-Salmon "Cuvée Nicolas François Billecart" NFB Brut Champagne

98 points James Suckling: "A superfine nose with the freshness still very much leading the way. Lemon and fresh wild strawberries, almond milk and a hint of brulée toffee; really lively. The palate has a bright, crunchy and assertive burst of lemon flavor on entry with white cherries and smooth, sherbet-like texture that delivers weight with elegance. Great balance here. Impressive and youthful, super pure and full of power." (7/2015) 97 points Vinous: "A mesmerizing, thrilling Champagne, the 2002 Cuvée Nicolas François Billecart is a great example of the vintage at its best. Silky and racy on the pal ...Read More »

2002 Nicolas Feuillatte "Palmes d'Or" Brut Champagne

93 points Wine Spectator: "Refined and focused, this sleek version offers ripe flavors of poached apple, ground anise, almond financier, cassis and candied lemon zest, carried by the fine, silky finish to a lightly smoky finish. Drink now through 2025." (11/2013) 91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "(a 50/50 blend of chardonnay and pinot noir; L34140): Bright gold. Smoky pear, nectarine and dried fig scents are lifted by lemon curd and white flowers. Toasty and broad on entry, then brighter and more tangy in the mid-palate, offering sweet citrus and orchard fruit flavors and a hint of buttery brioche. Closes with b ...Read More »

2002 Krug "Clos du Mesnil" Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne

Krug is an icon in Champagne, and their single-vineyard Clos du Mesnil is only produced in the very best years. Tasting notes from the producer: "At first sight, a bright and luminous golden color of ripe wheat. On the nose, aromas of citrus fruits, white pepper and spices, slightly grilled nuts and brioche. On the palate, it is precise, pure and fresh with tension, vivacity, and great balance. Notes of peach, orange, citrus fruit, and licorice are all enhanced by a very long finish. The year 2002 offered a clement and generous climate, consistently warm... Read More »

2002 Thiénot "La Vigne aux Gamins" Blanc de Blancs Brut Champagne

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "A concentrated, dense wine, this is round and rich with fresh apple flavor, but also a hint of maturity—a touch of cookie and almonds on the finish. This is an impressive wine, full of flavor and great concentration." (12/2013) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Hints of marzipan and gumdrop add richness to the flavors of patisserie apple, lemon curd, smoke and honeycomb in this firm, well-cut version. Offers a finely detailed bead and a lasting finish, with a hint of blanched almond. Drink now through 2025." 2002 Ruinart "Dom Ruinart" Brut Rosé Champagne

95 points James Suckling: "Big on the autolysis wow factor, this chardonnay-driven rosé is a very impressive Champagne from the outset with a wealth of toasty autolysis, sweet spices and flinty lemon with some pink grapefruit too. The intensity is impressive, as is the complexity and freshness. The palate has smooth-honed shape and fine acidity with some assertive ripe phenolics making for superior structure and depth. Flavors of blood orange, peach and lemon drive deep and the finish is superb. Drink now or for up to five years." 2002 Moet & Chandon "Cuvee Dom Pérignon - Luminous" Brut Champagne

98 points Vinous: "The 2002 Dom Pérignon speaks to opulence and intensity. Rich, layered and voluptuous in the glass, the 2002 shows off its flamboyant personality with flair. Butter, cooked apple and tropically-leaning fruits mesh together effortlessly. Interestingly, with time in the glass the 2002 gains in freshness and energy without losing its essential opulence. The elevated ripeness of the year gives the 2002 Dom Pérignon distinctly Puligny-Montrachet leaning inflections. Chef de Caves Richard Geoffroy adds that August that year was hot and very dry. Rain towards th ...Read More »

2002 Louis Roederer "Cristal" Brut Champagne
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2002 Louis Roederer "Cristal" Brut Champagne (100W&S, 99JS, 98WE, 96CG, 96RP, 96VN, 92WS, 91ST). Wine & Spirits: "If a wine could ever make you want to pull the top down on your '68 Ferrari convertible, rip off the rearview mirror and take off, this is it. It has a different kind of energy than the '02 Cristal Rosé, which is more ethereal, like strawberries at the right hand of some ancient Gallic god. This is more insolent, brash, earth bound. All the scents and flavors seem to emanate from limestone, as does the acidity, which hits at the front of the mouth and powers through the wine with the kind of solar energy that lifts mist off the white chalk on a cool morning in Cramant. The wine goes on for miles. It's already irresistable, and will only improve with ten, 20, 30 and 40 years of age." (12/2009)

2002 Bruno Michel "Cuvee Millésime" Brut Champagne

This fantastic Champagne comes from the villages of Pierry and Moussy in the sud-Epernay subregion of Champagne. Bruno Michel has been organic since 1999 and five of his 37.5 acres are farmed biodynamically. This vintage Brut is 80% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Meunier, and it offers stupendous balance between simple enjoyment/drinkability and more intellectual geeked-out notes of wet stone and austere minerality.
