Heitz Cellar "Ink Grade" Napa Valley Port (375ml)

As Wall Street Journal wine writers Dorothy Gaiter and John Brecher advise, "If you ever see Heitz Cellars' Ink Grade Port...grab it!" (from "Give Sweets a Chance," 10/2009). It's sound advice, for this rich and intensely satisfying dessert-style wine from Heitz sure does hit the sweet spot for under $20! A blend of eight different Portuguese grape varieties with distinctive character from the Ink Grade Vineyard in Napa Valley, the current blend draws from the 2005, 2006, and 2007 vintages. From the winery: "The deep hue of our Ink Grade Port sets the to... Read More »

Heitz Cellar "Ink Grade" Napa Valley Port

This Napa Valley Port wine is a blend of the 2005, 2006, and 2007 vintages. It is made from the classic Portugese varietals Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Sauzao, Tinta Cao, Tinta Bairrada, Tinta Madeira, Tinta Amarela and Bastardo. The wine is characterized by its fruity character with a lush, velvety mouthfeel. It can, of course, be enjoyed for dessert as well as with cheese, or as an aperitif. The Wall Street Journal enthusiastically agrees in its October 2009 article, titled "Giving Sweets a Chance": "If you ever see Heitz Cellars' Ink Grade Port.... Read More »

2013 Justin "Obtuse" Paso Robles Dessert Wine (375ml)

This is a true port-style wine made from Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. Fermentation is stopped by the addition of a high-proof neutral grape brandy, leaving 7% natural grape sugar in the wine, which is aged in older French oak barrels. Promising to pack a lot of flavor into this little 375ml bottle, it's not just for chocolate and dessert pairings—try it with a cheese plate! The winery's tasting note: "Ripe black cherry, blackcurrant and a subtle berry jelly note mixed with savory Cabernet Sauvignon elements. Full-bodied, sweet but fresh on the palate with ... Meyer Family California Port (500ml)

The Meyer Family Cellars' California Port is made from several vintages of old vine Zinfandel that averaged eight-years-old upon release. It's vinified in a modified version of the traditional Portuguese solera method, and has rich, roasted black fruit flavors, dried cherries and chocolate. There's also a higher tone from the addition of Zinfandel brandy, which adds kirsch-like cherry and cassis notes. Try this sweetie with some funky cheese, like the Red Hawk from Cowgirl Creamery, or with a chocolate torte drizzled with chocolate ganache and fresh rasp... Read More »

2013 Domaine de la Terre Rouge Shenandoah Valley Muscat-á-Petits Grains (375ml)

Virginia Boone of Wine Enthusiast raves: "Rhône specialist Bill Easton began making Muscat à Petits Grains in 1995, inspired by his love of Muscat de Beaumes de Venise. A wine he creates only in certain years, it’s a deliciously balanced delight of apricot and honey-nectar flavors with a crème brûlée richness. It pairs perfectly with fresh fruit and cheese, as a first course with foie gras or with fruit or nut desserts."

2002 Sine Qua Non "Mr. K The Noble Man" Edna Valley Chardonnay (375ml)

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2002 Mr. K The Noble Man (321 grams per liter of residual sugar and 10.25 grams per liter of acidity) is made from 100% botrytised Chardonnay. Its medium gold color is followed by a wine with honeyed complexity, and huge body, sweetness, and thickness. This effort is never as complex or focused as its siblings, but it is still a phenomenal sweet wine that can stand on its own merits against any great sweet wine made in the world. (RP)" (6/2005)

2001 Far Niente "Dolce" Napa Valley Dessert Wine (375ml)

A great vintage for Dolce. "Exceptionally fortuitous weather conditions in the weeks leading up to harvest, with rain, persistent humidity and drying conditions at just the right intervals to produce an extensive and uniform botrytis infection in the vineyard," says Dolce winemaker Greg Allen.

2001 Williams Selyem "Vista Verde" Late Harvest Gewurztraminer (375ml)

89 (+?) points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Pale green-tinged gold color. High-toned aromas of peach, apricot, clove and cinnamon. Not at all unctuous or thick; in fact a bit tart-edged, with slightly shrill flavors of orange peel and overripe pineapple framed by fresh acidity. This is even sweeter than the 2000 version at 16% residual sugar (it's carrying more alcohol as well), and yet the acids seem harder too, at least today. Additional Recommended California Wines." 2005 Williams Selyem "Vista Verde" San Benito County LH Gewurztraminer (375ml)

According to the producer's website: "Williams Selyem Winery began as a simple dream of two friends, Ed Selyem and Burt Williams, who pursued weekend winemaking as a hobby in 1979 in a garage in Forestville, California, and made their first commercial vintage in 1981. In less than two decades, Burt and Ed created a cult-status winery of international acclaim. Together they set a new standard for Pinot Noir winemaking in the United States, aligning Sonoma County's Russian River Valley in the firmament of the best winegrowing regions of the world. 1995 Far Niente "Dolce" Napa Valley Dessert Wine (375ml)

First created by the folks at Far Niente in 1985, the Dolce label has become a standar bearer for California dessert wine. Made with late harvest Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon in very small quantities, the Dolce is decadent and sultry, with plenty of sugar and acidity to allow to age in a good cellar for decades.

2010 Far Niente "Dolce" Napa Valley Dessert Wine (375ml)

Dolce is Napa's ultimate Sauternes-style dessert wine, with its noble botrytis underpinning and joyful acidity. A combination of late harvest Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc from a 20-acre estate vineyard in the temperate town of Coombsville, the vineyard is naturally sheltered from the wind so that the morning fog and natural humidity lingers to allow botrytis to take hold on the grape clusters. The luxurious Sauternes style is completed by 32 months in new French oak before bottling. The wine will pair well with foie gras, poached figs, blue or washed-rin... Read More »

2005 Sine Qua Non Atlantis FE 203-3e Roussanne Vin de Paille (375 ml)

97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Atlantis Fe 203-3e Roussanne Vin de Paille is a 100% Roussanne cuvee possessing 352 grams of residual sugar per liter. While it is a stunning effort, when tasted next to the two Mr. K. whites, it comes in slightly below those two out-of-this-world offerings. Incredible aromas of honeysuckle and marmalade are classic late-harvest Roussanne, and the wine’s sweet style is beautifully balanced by terrific acidity (12.5 grams of acid per liter). (RP)" (6/2008) 94 points Vinous: "for 375 ml.; 8.2% alcohol with 352 grams per liter of residual sugar) Deep gold color. Hugel ...Read More »
