Heitz Cellar "Ink Grade" Napa Valley Port (375ml)

As Wall Street Journal wine writers Dorothy Gaiter and John Brecher advise, "If you ever see Heitz Cellars' Ink Grade Port...grab it!" (from "Give Sweets a Chance," 10/2009). It's sound advice, for this rich and intensely satisfying dessert-style wine from Heitz sure does hit the sweet spot for under $20! A blend of eight different Portuguese grape varieties with distinctive character from the Ink Grade Vineyard in Napa Valley, the current blend draws from the 2005, 2006 and 2007 vintages. From the winery: "The deep hue of our Ink Grade Port sets the to... Read More »

Heitz Cellar "Ink Grade" Napa Valley Port

This Napa Valley Port wine is a blend of the 2005, 2006, and 2007 vintages. It is made from the classic Portugese varietals Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Sauzao, Tinta Cao, Tinta Bairrada, Tinta Madeira, Tinta Amarela and Bastardo. The wine is characterized by its fruity character with a lush, velvety mouthfeel. It can, of course, be enjoyed for dessert as well as with cheese, or as an aperitif. The Wall Street Journal enthusiastically agrees in its October 2009 article, titled "Giving Sweets a Chance": "If you ever see Heitz Cellars' Ink Grade Port.... Read More »

2012 Justin "Obtuse" Paso Robles Dessert Red (375ml)

According to the winery: "Made using the same method as a traditional Port, Justin Obtuse instead features Cabernet Sauvignon, our hallmark grape variety. A portion of the natural sugar from the grapes is left unfermented for a touch of sweetness that complements the varietal flavors of Cabernet Sauvignon. With only a few months in barrel for some depth, Obtuse has a crisp, clean finish when compared to traditional versions of this type of wine. The 2012 vintage began with a cold, dry winter and a cool spring which delayed budbreak until mid-April, about... Read More »

2009 Far Niente "Dolce" Napa Valley Dessert Wine (375ml)

Napa Valley's Dolce Winery is the only winery in North America that is solely devoted to producing a single, late harvest wine. It is one of the few wineries in the world willing to make such a commitment, sharing a common philosophy with the great Sauternes producers of Bordeaux. Winery's Tasting Notes: "Aromas of apricot, poached pear and orange rind dominate the more subtle clove and mineral notes. The flavors mimic the aromas on the nose, melding with a mouthwatering texture and added notes of juicy orange and citrus blossom. This wine shows the res... Read More »

2014 Joseph Phelps "Eisrébe" Napa Valley Late Harvest Scheurebe (375ml)

Grown on their Home Ranch Vineyard in St. Helena, Joseph Phelps makes Eisrébe as a nod to German ice wines. From 100% Scheurebe (shoy-RAY-buh) grapes, the Napa Valley latitude does not allow for natural freezing on the vines as in Germany. Rather the late-harvested grapes are lightly frozen in the winery before being gently pressed to extract only the most concentrated nectar while leaving much of the water behind. The finished dessert wine sports 8% alcohol and 22.5% residual sugar. From the winery: "The 2014 Eisrébe is delicately nuanced with crisp app... Read More »

2006 Justin "Obtuse" Paso Robles Dessert Red Back In Stock!
2006 Justin "Obtuse" Paso Robles Dessert Red

The dictionary definitions for obtuse don't seem to aptly describe Justin's delicious dessert wine "it is neither angular, blunt or indistinctly felt" perhaps the triangle on the label fits the bill. Semantic quibbles aside, this is a lovely dessert wine that is ready to drink now, yet will also evolve nicely over the next five to seven years. Dark ruby in color with bittersweet chocolate accents that play up the jammy raspberry, sweet cherry and plum aromas, all of which carry on to the sumptuous palate. An open bottle, with proper care, can last up to ... Read More »

2012 Dashe "Late Harvest" Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel (375ml)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2012 Zinfandel Late Harvest has 9.5 grams of residual sugar and smells somewhat like an Amarone. Usually I enjoy these Late Harvest Zins after they have some age on them, but this 2012 offers good fresh fruit and purity. Drink it over the next decade. (RP)" (12/2013) K&L Notes: According to Robert Parker: "This boutique producer has one of the more innovative back labels where you can peel off the name and appellation of the wine, much like a postage stamp. I am surprised more wineries haven’t utilized this creative technology. In any event, it’s what’s in the bo... Read More »

2001 Williams Selyem "Vista Verde" Late Harvest Gewurztraminer (375ml)

89 (+?) points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Pale green-tinged gold color. High-toned aromas of peach, apricot, clove and cinnamon. Not at all unctuous or thick; in fact a bit tart-edged, with slightly shrill flavors of orange peel and overripe pineapple framed by fresh acidity. This is even sweeter than the 2000 version at 16% residual sugar (it's carrying more alcohol as well), and yet the acids seem harder too, at least today. Additional Recommended California Wines." 2007 Sine Qua Non "To The Rescue" Grenache Vin de Paille (375ml)

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2007 To the Rescue Grenache Vin de Paille appears to be a much improved version of the 2005 Grenache Vin de Paille I tasted last year. It possesses 295 grams of residual sugar per liter as well as remarkable acidity, sweetness, and richness, an inky/purple color, and classic aromas of cassis. In spite of its weight, intensity, and unctuosity, the wine is surprisingly delicate and nuanced on the palate. (RP)" (8/2009) 94 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Saturated purple. Primary blueberry and boysenberry aromas are complicated by notes of tobacco, candied flowers and smoky minerals. Remin ...Read More »

2005 Williams Selyem "Vista Verde" Late Harvest Gewurztraminer (375ml)

According to the producer's website: "Williams Selyem Winery began as a simple dream of two friends, Ed Selyem and Burt Williams, who pursued weekend winemaking as a hobby in 1979 in a garage in Forestville, California, and made their first commercial vintage in 1981. In less than two decades, Burt and Ed created a cult-status winery of international acclaim. Together they set a new standard for Pinot Noir winemaking in the United States, aligning Sonoma County's Russian River Valley in the firmament of the best winegrowing regions of the world. 2008 Sine Qua Non "Jinete Bajo Vin de Paille" Roussanne (375ml)

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The days of the Mr. K wines are gone forever with the tragically premature death of Austrian Alois Kracher, who had partnered with Manfred Krankl in this intriguing homage to sweet nectars. Krankl continues on his own, and in Spring, 2011, he will release the 2008 Jinete Bajo Roussanne Vin de Paille, which is named after his wife's favorite horse. Made from 100% estate fruit, with a finished alcohol level of 11.8%, a whopping 240 grams per liter of residual sugar, and 8.7 grams of acidity, this is a pure nectar of honeyed marmalade, waxy, syrupy honeysuc ...Read More »

2006 Sine Qua Non "To The Rescue" Roussanne Vin de Paille (375ml)

98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2006 To the Rescue Roussanne Vin de Paille has 290 grams of residual sugar per liter. Despite its aging in 100% new oak, there is not a hint of wood to be found in the aromas or flavors. This remarkable sweet white exhibits abundant aromas of orange marmalade, rose petals, honeysuckle, brown sugar, and spice. It looks like 10W40 motor oil, but its ample acidity provides uplift and vibrancy to its enormously endowed, sweet personality. Who knows how long it will last, but it definitely has 15-20 years of longevity, and it may surprise us all by living ...Read More »

2013 Williams Selyem "Vista Verde" San Benito County Late Harvest Gewurztraminer (375ml) (Previously $60)

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Beautiful lychee and rose-petal aromas open the bouquet of this lithe late-harvest wine, made in small amounts. Apple and melon highlight the fruitier overtones atop a base of balanced minerality, which softens the sweetness. The finish is tangy and rich in nutmeg." (11/2015)

2005 Sine Qua Non Atlantis FE 203-3e Roussanne Vin de Paille (375 ml)

97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Atlantis Fe 203-3e Roussanne Vin de Paille is a 100% Roussanne cuvee possessing 352 grams of residual sugar per liter. While it is a stunning effort, when tasted next to the two Mr. K. whites, it comes in slightly below those two out-of-this-world offerings. Incredible aromas of honeysuckle and marmalade are classic late-harvest Roussanne, and the wine’s sweet style is beautifully balanced by terrific acidity (12.5 grams of acid per liter)." (6/2008) 94 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep gold color. Hugely aromatic, gaudy bouquet of peach, apricot, blond tobacco, mint and dried f ...Read More »
